सूत उवाच । द्विविधं भस्म संप्रोक्तं सर्वमंगलदं परम् । तत्प्रकारमहं वक्ष्ये सावधानतया शृणु १ ।
sUta uvAca । dvividhaM bhasma saMproktaM sarvamaMgaladaM param । tatprakAramahaM vakSye sAvadhAnatayA zRNu 1 ।
Sūta said: The ashes (bhasma) of auspicious nature are of two types. I shall explain their characteristics. Please listen attentively.

एकं ज्ञेयं महाभस्म द्वितीयं स्वल्पसंज्ञकम् । महाभस्म इति प्रोक्तं भस्म नानाविधं परम् २ ।
ekaM jJeyaM mahAbhasma dvitIyaM svalpasaMjJakam । mahAbhasma iti proktaM bhasma nAnAvidhaM param 2 ।
One is known as Mahābhasma (Great ashes) and the second is known as Svalpa (the little). The Mahābhasma is of various types.

तद्भस्म त्रिविधं प्रोक्तं श्रोतं स्मार्तं च लौकिकम् । भस्मैव स्वल्पसंज्ञं हि बहुधा परिकीर्तितम् ३ ।
tadbhasma trividhaM proktaM zrotaM smArtaM ca laukikam । bhasmaiva svalpasaMjJaM hi bahudhA parikIrtitam 3 ।
It is of three types: Śrauta, (Vedic), Smārta (resulting from Smṛti rites) and Laukika (prepared from ordinary fire). The Svalpa is the ordinary ash which is of various forms.

श्रौतं भस्म तथा स्मार्तं द्विजानामेव कीर्तितम् । अन्येषामपि सर्वेषामपरं भस्म लौकिकम् ४ ।
zrautaM bhasma tathA smArtaM dvijAnAmeva kIrtitam । anyeSAmapi sarveSAmaparaM bhasma laukikam 4 ।
The Śrauta and the Smārta ashes are to be used only by the twice-born. The Laukika can be used by every one.

धारणं मंत्रतः प्रोक्तं द्विजानां मुनिपुंगवैः । केवलं धारणं ज्ञेयमन्येषां मंत्रवर्जितम् ५ ।
dhAraNaM maMtrataH proktaM dvijAnAM munipuMgavaiH । kevalaM dhAraNaM jJeyamanyeSAM maMtravarjitam 5 ।
Sages have said that the twice-born should apply the holy ashes repeating mantras. The others can simply apply without any mantra.

आग्नेयमुच्यते भस्म दग्धगोमयसंभवम् । तदापि द्र व्यमित्युक्तं त्रिपुंड्रस्य महामुने ६ ।
Agneyamucyate bhasma dagdhagomayasaMbhavam । tadApi dra vyamityuktaM tripuMDrasya mahAmune 6 ।
When dry cow-dung is reduced to ashes it is called Agneya (fiery). O great sage, for the sake of Tripuṇḍra this ash can be used.

अग्निहोत्रोत्थितं भस्मसंग्राह्यं वा मनीषिभिः । अन्ययज्ञोत्थितं वापि त्रिपुण्ड्रस्य च धारणे ७ ।
agnihotrotthitaM bhasmasaMgrAhyaM vA manISibhiH । anyayajJotthitaM vApi tripuNDrasya ca dhAraNe 7 ।
The ashes resulting from Agnihotra and other sacrificial rites shall be used for the Tripuṇḍra by men seeking intellect.

अग्निरित्यादिभिर्मंत्रैर्जाबालोपनिषद्गतेः । सप्तभिधूलनं कार्यं भस्मना सजलेन च ८ ।
agnirityAdibhirmaMtrairjAbAlopaniSadgateH । saptabhidhUlanaM kAryaM bhasmanA sajalena ca 8 ।
When the ashes are put on the forehead or smeared with water, the seven mantras “Agni॥ 1॥” etc. mentioned in the Jābālopaniṣad, shall be recited.

वर्णानामाश्रमाणां च मंत्रतो मंत्रतोपि च । त्रिपुंड्रोद्धूलनं प्रोक्तजाबालैरादरेण च ९ ।
varNAnAmAzramANAM ca maMtrato maMtratopi ca । tripuMDroddhUlanaM proktajAbAlairAdareNa ca 9 ।
People of all varṇas and Āśramas shall put on Tripuṇḍra on the forehead or dust their bodies with the mantras mentioned in the Jābāla-Upaniṣad or if no mantra is used they shall do the same with reverence.

भस्मनोद्धूलनं चैव यथा तिर्यक्!त्रिपुंड्रकम् । प्रमादादपि मोक्षार्थी न त्यजेदिति विश्रुतिः 1-24-१० ।
bhasmanoddhUlanaM caiva yathA tiryak!tripuMDrakam । pramAdAdapi mokSArthI na tyajediti vizrutiH 1-24-10 ।
Dusting with the holy ashes and smearing the Tripuṇḍra in horizontal parallel lines shall not be abandoned by those who seek salvation. Śruti lays down that they shall not get negligent.

शिवेन विष्णुना चैव तथा तिर्यक्!त्रिपुंड्रकम् । उमादेवी च लक्ष्मींश्च वाचान्याभिश्च नित्यशः ११ ।
zivena viSNunA caiva tathA tiryak!tripuMDrakam । umAdevI ca lakSmIMzca vAcAnyAbhizca nityazaH 11 ।
By Shiva and Vishnu, as well as by the beings in the three worlds, the Tripundra is always revered. Similarly, Uma, Devi, Lakshmi, and other deities are also worshipped continually.

ब्राह्मणैः क्षत्रियैर्वैश्यैः शूद्रै रपि च संस्करैः । अपभ्रंशैर्धृतं भस्मत्रिपुंड्रोद्धूलनात्मना १२ ।
brAhmaNaiH kSatriyairvaizyaiH zUdrai rapi ca saMskaraiH । apabhraMzairdhRtaM bhasmatripuMDroddhUlanAtmanA 12 ।
By Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and even Shudras, with their respective rituals, the Tripundra is worn, and by cleansing the body with ashes, it is firmly upheld, preserving its sanctity.

uddhUlanaM tripuMDraM ca zraddhayA nAcaraMti ye । teSAM nAsti samAcAro varNAzramasamanvitaH 13 ।
Those who do not observe Tripuṇḍra and Uddhūlana cannot practise well the various rites of the different Varṇas and Āśramas.

uddhUlanaM tripuMDraM ca zraddhayA nAcaraMti ye । teSAM nAsti vinirmuktissaMsArAjjanmakoTibhiH 14 ।
Those who do not observe with faith Tripuṇḍra and Uddhūlana cannot be liberated from the world even if they take ten million births.

uddhUlanaM tripuMDraM ca zraddhayA nAcaranti ye । teSAM nAsti zivajJAnaM kalpakoTizatairapi 15 ।
Even after hundreds of crores of Kalpas, Śiva-knowledge will not dawn upon those who do not observe with faith Tripuṇḍra and Uddhūlana.

uddhUlanaM tripuMDraM ca zraddhayA nAcaranti ye । te mahApAtakairyuktA iti zAstrIyanirNayaH 16 ।
This is the final conclusion of all sacred texts that those who do not observe with faith Tripuṇḍra and Uddhūlana are tarnished by great sins.

uddhUlanaM tripuMDraM ca zraddhayA nAcaranti ye । te mahApAtakairyuktA iti zAstrIyanirNayaH 16 ।
Any action performed by those who do not observe Tripuṇḍra and Uddhūlana with faith will give adverse results.

उद्धूलनं त्रिपुंड्रं च श्रद्धया नाचरन्ति ये । तेषामाचरितं सर्वं विपरीतफलाय हि १७ ।
uddhUlanaM tripuMDraM ca zraddhayA nAcaranti ye । teSAmAcaritaM sarvaM viparItaphalAya hi 17 ।
O sage, the hatred towards Tripuṇḍra and Uddhūlana is kindled in the hearts of only those great sinners who hate everyone.

महापातकयुक्तानां जंतूनां शर्वविद्विषाम् । त्रिपुंड्रोद्धूलनद्वेषो जायते सुदृढं मुने १८ ।
mahApAtakayuktAnAM jaMtUnAM zarvavidviSAm । tripuMDroddhUlanadveSo jAyate sudRDhaM mune 18 ।
After performing the sacred rites of Śiva in the fire, the devotee who has realised the Self shall smear the forehead with the ashes repeating the mantra beginning with “Tryāyuṣā॥ 2॥”. The moment the ashes (bhasma) come in contact with his body he will be freed from sins of his impious acts.

शिवाग्निकार्यं यः कृत्वा कुर्यात्त्रियायुषात्मवित् । मुच्यते सर्वपापैस्तु स्पृष्टेन भस्मना नरः १९ ।
zivAgnikAryaM yaH kRtvA kuryAttriyAyuSAtmavit । mucyate sarvapApaistu spRSTena bhasmanA naraH 19 ।
He who observes Tripuṇḍra with white ashes during the three Sandhyās every day becomes free from all sins and rejoices with Śiva.

सितेन भस्मना कुर्याल्लाटे तु त्रिपुण्ड्रकम् । यो सावनादिभूतान्हि लोकानाप्तो मृतो भवेत् २१ ।
sitena bhasmanA kuryAllATe tu tripuNDrakam । yo sAvanAdibhUtAnhi lokAnApto mRto bhavet 21 ।
He who makes the Tripuṇḍra on the forehead with white ashes shall attain, on death, the primordial worlds.

अकृत्वा भस्मना स्नानं न जपेद्वै षडक्षरम् । त्रिपुंड्रं च रचित्वा तु विधिना भस्मना जपेत् २२ ।
akRtvA bhasmanA snAnaM na japedvai SaDakSaram । tripuMDraM ca racitvA tu vidhinA bhasmanA japet 22 ।
No one shall repeat the six-syllabled mantra without applying ashes on the body. After making the Tripuṇḍra with the ashes he shall perform the Japa.

अदयो वाधमो वापि सर्वपापान्वितोपि वा । उषःपापान्वितो वापि मूर्खो वा पतितोपि वा २३ ।
adayo vAdhamo vApi sarvapApAnvitopi vA । uSaHpApAnvito vApi mUrkho vA patitopi vA 23 ।
Whether a person is a sinner, an ignorant person, a fallen soul, or even a fool, they are all redeemed if they take refuge in Lord Shiva.

यस्मिन्देशेव सेन्नित्यं भूतिशासनसंयुतः । सर्वतीर्थैश्च क्रतुभिः सांनिध्यं क्रियते सदा २४ ।
yasmindezeva sennityaM bhUtizAsanasaMyutaH । sarvatIrthaizca kratubhiH sAMnidhyaM kriyate sadA 24 ।
In the place where one serves Lord Shiva continually, in the company of saints and in the presence of sacred rituals, all holy places and Yajnas (rituals) are present, and the divine presence is always experienced.

त्रिपुंड्रसहितो जीवः पूज्यः सर्वैः सुरासुरैः । पापान्वितोपि शुद्धात्मा किं पुनः श्रद्धया युतः २५ ।
tripuMDrasahito jIvaH pUjyaH sarvaiH surAsuraiH । pApAnvitopi zuddhAtmA kiM punaH zraddhayA yutaH 25 ।
Even a sinful person is worthy of being honoured by Devas and Asuras if he has Tripuṇḍra on his forehead. What then of a faithful man endowed with a pure soul?

यस्मिन्देशे शिवज्ञानी भूतिशासनसंयुतः । गतो यदृच्छयाद्यापि तस्मिस्तीर्थाः समागताः २६ ।
yasmindeze zivajJAnI bhUtizAsanasaMyutaH । gato yadRcchayAdyApi tasmistIrthAH samAgatAH 26 ।
All the holy centres and sacred rivers go ever to the place which a person who is endowed with Śiva Jñāna (knowledge of Śiva) and has put on ashes casually visits.

बहुनात्र किमुक्तेन धार्यं भस्म सदा बुधैः । लिंगार्चनं सदा कार्यं जप्यो मंत्रः षडक्षरः २७ ।
bahunAtra kimuktena dhAryaM bhasma sadA budhaiH । liMgArcanaM sadA kAryaM japyo maMtraH SaDakSaraH 27 ।
Why should I say more? The sensible person shall always apply the ash, shall always worship the phallic image and shall always repeat the six-syllabled mantra of Śiva.

ब्रह्मणा विष्णुना वापि रुद्रे ण मुनिभिः सुरैः । भस्मधारणमाहात्म्यं न शक्यं परिभाषितुम् २८ ।
brahmaNA viSNunA vApi rudre Na munibhiH suraiH । bhasmadhAraNamAhAtmyaM na zakyaM paribhASitum 28 ।
Neither Brahmā, nor Viṣṇu, nor Rudra, nor sages, nor the devas can explain adequately the greatness of the application of the ashes.

इति वर्णाश्रमाचारो लुप्तवर्णक्रियोपि च । पापात्सकृत्त्रिपुंड्रस्य धारणात्सोपि मुच्यते २९ ।
iti varNAzramAcAro luptavarNakriyopi ca । pApAtsakRttripuMDrasya dhAraNAtsopi mucyate 29 ।
Even if a person has eschewed the duties of the different Varṇas and Āśramas, even if a person has omitted the holy rites of the Varṇas, he shall be freed from the sin if he wears Tripuṇḍra once.

ये भस्मधारिणं त्यक्त्वा कर्म कुर्वंति मानवाः । तेषां नास्ति विनिर्मोक्षः संसाराज्जन्मकोटिभिः 1-24-३० ।
ye bhasmadhAriNaM tyaktvA karma kurvaMti mAnavAH । teSAM nAsti vinirmokSaH saMsArAjjanmakoTibhiH 1-24-30 ।
Those men who exclude a man wearing Tripuṇḍra and perform holy rites are not liberated from worldly bondage even after crores of births.

ते नाधीतं गुरोः सर्वं ते न सर्वमनुष्ठितम् । येन विप्रेण शिरसि त्रिपुंड्रं भस्मना कृतम् ३१ ।
te nAdhItaM guroH sarvaM te na sarvamanuSThitam । yena vipreNa zirasi tripuMDraM bhasmanA kRtam 31 ।
If a brahmin wears the Tripuṇḍra with the ash on his forehead he must be considered as having learnt everything from the preceptor and as having performed every sacred rite.

ये भस्मधारिणं दृष्ट्वा नराः कुर्वंति ताडनम् । तेषां चंडालतो जन्म ब्रह्मन्नूह्यं विपश्चिता ३२ ।
ye bhasmadhAriNaM dRSTvA narAH kurvaMti tADanam । teSAM caMDAlato janma brahmannUhyaM vipazcitA 32 ।
Those who begin to strike on seeing a person who has applied the ash are reborn of Cāṇḍāla parents. O holy one, this can be guessed by the wise.

मानस्तोकेन मंत्रेण मंत्रितं भस्म धारयेत् । ब्राह्मणः क्षत्रियश्चैव प्रोक्तेष्वंगेषु भक्तिमान् ३३ ।
mAnastokena maMtreNa maMtritaM bhasma dhArayet । brAhmaNaH kSatriyazcaiva prokteSvaMgeSu bhaktimAn 33 ।
With great devotion Brahmins and Kṣatriyas shall apply the holy ashes over such parts of the body as are prescribed by the rule repeating the mantra “Mānastoke” etc.

वैश्यस्त्रियं बकेनैव शूद्र ः! पंचाक्षरेण तु । अन्यासां विधवास्त्रीणां विधिः प्रोक्तश्च शूद्र वत् ३४ ।
vaizyastriyaM bakenaiva zUdra H! paMcAkSareNa tu । anyAsAM vidhavAstrINAM vidhiH proktazca zUdra vat 34 ।
A Vaiśya shall apply the ashes repeating the Tryambaka॥ 4॥ mantra and a Śūdra with the five-syllabled mantra॥ 5॥. Widows and other women shall do like the Śūdras.

पंचब्रह्मादिमनुभिर्गृहस्थस्य विधीयते । त्रियंबकेन मनुना विधिर्वै ब्रह्मचारिणः ३५ ।
paMcabrahmAdimanubhirgRhasthasya vidhIyate । triyaMbakena manunA vidhirvai brahmacAriNaH 35 ।
A house-holder shall repeat the Pañcabrahma॥ 6॥ mantra etc. and a Brahmacārin shall repeat the Tryambaka-mantra॥ 7॥ at the time.

अघोरेणाथ मनुना विपिनस्थविधिः स्मृतः । यतिस्तु प्रणवेनैव त्रिपुंड्रादीनि कारयेत् ३६ ।
aghoreNAtha manunA vipinasthavidhiH smRtaH । yatistu praNavenaiva tripuMDrAdIni kArayet 36 ।
The Vānaprastha shall repeat the Aghora mantra॥ 8॥ and an ascetic shall observe with the Praṇava alone.

अतिवर्णाश्रमी नित्यं शिवोहं भावनात्परात् । शिवयोगी च नियतमीशानेनापि धारयेत् ३७ ।
ativarNAzramI nityaM zivohaM bhAvanAtparAt । zivayogI ca niyatamIzAnenApi dhArayet 37 ।
A Śivayogin being outside the pale of Varṇa and Āśrama rites because of his conception “I am Śiva” shall wear ashes with the Īśāna mantra.

न त्याज्यं सर्ववर्णैश्च भस्मधारणमुत्तमम् । अन्यैरपि यथाजीवैस्सदेति शिवशासनम् ३८ ।
na tyAjyaM sarvavarNaizca bhasmadhAraNamuttamam । anyairapi yathAjIvaissadeti zivazAsanam 38 ।
Śiva has ordained that the rite of wearing ashes shall not be eschewed by the people of any caste and outside the bounds of caste by other living beings.

भस्मस्नानेन यावंतः कणाः स्वाण्गे प्रतिष्ठिताः । तावंति शिवलिंगानि तनौ धत्ते हि धारकः ३९ ।
bhasmasnAnena yAvaMtaH kaNAH svANge pratiSThitAH । tAvaMti zivaliMgAni tanau dhatte hi dhArakaH 39 ।
A person who has applied ashes on his body actually wears as many liṅgas as there are particles of the ash that remain on his body.

ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्याः शूद्रा श्चापि च संकराः । स्त्रियोथ विधवा बालाः प्राप्ताः पाखंडिकास्तथा 1-24-४० ।
brAhmaNAH kSatriyA vaizyAH zUdrA zcApi ca saMkarAH । striyotha vidhavA bAlAH prAptAH pAkhaMDikAstathA 1-24-40 ।
Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, Shudras, and even those of mixed caste, women, widows, children, and those who have fallen into hypocrisy or falsehood, all are included in this category.

nAznIyAjjalamannamalpamapi vA bhasmAkSadhRtyA vinA । bhuktvAvAtha gRhI vanIpatiyatirvarNI tathA saMkaraH । enobhuNnarakaM prayAti sata dAgAyatrijApena tadvarNAnAM tu yatestu mukhyapraNavAjapena muktaMbhavet 43 ।
No man shall drink or eat even a bit without applying Bhasma or wearing Rudrākṣa. If he eats or drinks, whether he is a householder or Vānaprastha or an ascetic, a man of the four castes or of mixed caste, he becomes a sinner and goes to hell. If a man of the four castes repeats Gāyatrī॥ 9॥ or if an ascetic repeats the Praṇava he shall be liberated.

Great indeed is the sin accruing even from the sight of those who censure Śiva who is the support of three worlds and those who censure the man wearing Tripuṇḍra on his forehead. They are on a par with pigs of rubbish heap, demons, donkeys, dogs, jackals and worms. Such sinful persons are hellish fiends even from their very birth.

They may not see the sun during the day and the moon during the night. They may not see them even during sleep. They may be freed by repeating the Vedic Rudra Sūkta. Those who censure a person wearing the Tripuṇḍra are fools. A mere talk with them may cause the fall into hell. There is no way of saving then.

O sage, tāntrika is not authorised in a Śivayajña nor a person having Ūrdhvapuṇḍra (worn on the forehead by vertical mark by a Vaiṣṇava). A person marked with a heated wheel (a mark of a Vaiṣṇava) is excluded from Sivayajña.

Just as sandal paste alone can be applied over sandal paste, so also only the ash shall be applied over the sacred mark on the forehead. A sensible person will not apply anything over the forehead that wears the ornamental mark of ashes on it.

The Tripuṇḍra shall be applied upto the forelocks by women. Brahmins and widows shall apply the ash also. Similarly it shall be applied by persons of all Āramas. Thus it bestows salvation and destroys all sins.

Whether a Brahmachari (celibate student), Grihastha (householder), Vanaprastha (retired individual), or Yati (ascetic), or even if one is a Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, Sudra, or any other fallen or degraded being, all can be uplifted through the practice of devotion to Lord Shiva.

By properly wearing the Tripundra (three horizontal marks) and applying the sacred ash (bhasma), they (devotees) become purified. In this way, by following the prescribed rituals, they remove the accumulated sins and become free from the burden of past misdeeds.

A person regularly applying the ash (bhasma) is freed of the sins of slaughter of women and cows and that of heroes and horses. There is no doubt about it.

Backbiting, false accusations, desiring false testimony, and other such sins are instantly destroyed by the wearing of the Tripundra (three marks of ash) on the forehead.

When impurities are evacuated, a bath with water shall be performed; a bath with the ash (bhasma) is always purificatory; a bath with mantras removes sin and if a bath with knowledge is taken, the greatest goal will be reached.

A man who takes the bath of ashes derives that benefit which all holy centres accord. He gets the merit thereof.

Bath with the ash is a holy centre where Gaṅgā Snāna is possible every day. Śiva is represented by the ash which directly sanctifies the three worlds.
