RSaya UcuH । sUta sUta mahAbhAga vyAsaziSya namostu te । tadeva vyAsato brUhi bhasmamAhAtmyamuttamam 1 ।
The sages said: O Sūta, Sūta the fortunate disciple of Vyāsa, obeisance to thee. Please explain again the glorification of the holy ashes, of the Rudrākṣa and of Śiva’s names. Lovingly explaining the three, please delight our minds.

तथा रुद्रा क्षमाहात्म्यं नाम माहात्म्यमुत्तमम् । त्रितयं ब्रूहि सुप्रीत्या ममानंदयचेतसम् २ ।
tathA rudrA kSamAhAtmyaM nAma mAhAtmyamuttamam । tritayaM brUhi suprItyA mamAnaMdayacetasam 2 ।
Thus, O Rudra, please speak to us about the supreme glory of the Name and the greatness of the Lord. Please describe the Trinitarian aspect, which will give joy to my heart and mind.

सूत उवाच । साधुपृष्टं भवद्भिश्च लोकानां हितकारकम् । भवंतो वै महाधन्याः पवित्राः कुलभूषणाः ३ ।
sUta uvAca । sAdhupRSTaM bhavadbhizca lokAnAM hitakArakam । bhavaMto vai mahAdhanyAH pavitrAH kulabhUSaNAH 3 ।
Sūta said: It is good that you have referred to this matter that is highly beneficent to the world. You are blessed, holy and ornaments to your families since you own Śiva as your sole great favourite deity.

येषां चैव शिवः साक्षाद्दैवतं परमं शुभम् । सदा शिवकथा लोके वल्लभा भवतां सदा ४ ।
yeSAM caiva zivaH sAkSAddaivataM paramaM zubham । sadA zivakathA loke vallabhA bhavatAM sadA 4 ।
For those to whom Shiva Himself, the supreme and auspicious deity, is directly present, the stories of Shiva in this world always remain dear to them.

ते धन्याश्च कृतार्थाश्च सफलं देहधारणम् । उद्धृतञ्च कुलं तेषां ये शिवं समुपासते ५ ।
te dhanyAzca kRtArthAzca saphalaM dehadhAraNam । uddhRtaJca kulaM teSAM ye zivaM samupAsate 5 ।
Those who adore Śiva are blessed and content. Their birth is fruitful and their family is elevated.

मुखे यस्य शिवनाम सदाशिवशिवेति च । पापानि न स्पृशंत्येव खदिरांगारंकयथा ६ ।
mukhe yasya zivanAma sadAzivaziveti ca । pApAni na spRzaMtyeva khadirAMgAraMkayathA 6 ।
Sins never touch those from whose mouth the names Sadāśiva, Śiva etc. come out for ever, as they do not touch the burning charcoal of the khadira wood.

श्रीशिवाय नमस्तुभ्यं मुखं व्याहरते यदा । तन्मुखं पावनं तीर्थं सर्वपापविनाशनम् ७ ।
zrIzivAya namastubhyaM mukhaM vyAharate yadA । tanmukhaM pAvanaM tIrthaM sarvapApavinAzanam 7 ।
When a mouth utters “Obeisance to Thee, holy Śiva” that mouth (face) is on a par with holy centres destroying all sins.

तन्मुखञ्च तथा यो वै पश्यतिप्रीतिमान्नरः । तीर्थजन्यं फलं तस्य भवतीति सुनिश्चितम् ८ ।
tanmukhaJca tathA yo vai pazyatiprItimAnnaraH । tIrthajanyaM phalaM tasya bhavatIti sunizcitam 8 ।
It is certain that the benefit of making pilgrimages to holy centres accrues to one who lovingly looks at His holy face.

यत्र त्रयं सदा तिष्ठेदेतच्छुभतरं द्विजा । तस्य दर्शनमात्रेण वेणीस्नानफलंलभेत् ९ ।
yatra trayaM sadA tiSThedetacchubhataraM dvijA । tasya darzanamAtreNa veNIsnAnaphalaMlabhet 9 ।
O brahmins, the place where these three are found is the most auspicious one. A mere contact of the place accords the benefit of taking a holy dip in the sacred Triveṇī.

शिवनामविभूतिश्च तथा रुद्रा क्ष एव च । एतत्त्रयं महापुण्यं त्रिवेणीसदृशं स्मृतम् 1-23-१० ।
zivanAmavibhUtizca tathA rudrA kSa eva ca । etattrayaM mahApuNyaM triveNIsadRzaM smRtam 1-23-10 ।
Śiva’s name, the ashes and the Rudrākṣa beads—the three are very holy and are on a par with Triveṇī॥ 1॥ (the confluence of the three holy rivers).

एतत्त्रयं शरीरे च यस्य तिष्ठति नित्यशः । तस्यैव दर्शनं लोके दुर्लभं पापहारकम् ११ ।
etattrayaM zarIre ca yasya tiSThati nityazaH । tasyaiva darzanaM loke durlabhaM pApahArakam 11 ।
The sight of the persons who have these three in their bodies is a rare occurrence. But when obtained it removes all sins.

तद्दर्शनं यथा वेणी नोभयोरंतरं मनाक् । एवं योनविजानाति सपापिष्ठो न संशयः १२ ।
taddarzanaM yathA veNI nobhayoraMtaraM manAk । evaM yonavijAnAti sapApiSTho na saMzayaH 12 ।
There is no difference at all between these two—a sight of the holy man and a bath in the Triveṇī. He who does not realise this is undoubtedly a sinner.

विभूतिर्यस्य नो भाले नांगे रुद्रा क्षधारणम् । नास्ये शिवमयी वाणी तं त्यजेदधमं यथा १३ ।
vibhUtiryasya no bhAle nAMge rudrA kSadhAraNam । nAsye zivamayI vANI taM tyajedadhamaM yathA 13 ।
The man who has no ashes on his forehead, has not worn Rudrākṣa on his body and does not utter names of Śiva shall be shunned as one does a base man.

शैवं नाम यथा गंगा विभूतिर्यमुना मता । रुद्रा क्षं विधिना प्रोक्ता सर्वपापाविनाशिनी १४ ।
zaivaM nAma yathA gaMgA vibhUtiryamunA matA । rudrA kSaM vidhinA proktA sarvapApAvinAzinI 14 ।
As said by Brahmā, Śiva’s name is on a par with Gaṅgā, the ash is equal to Yamunā and Rudrākṣa destroys all sins (and is equal to Sarasvatī).

शरीरे च त्रयं यस्य तत्फलं चैकतः स्थितम् । एकतो वेणिकायाश्च स्नानजंतुफलं बुधैः १५ ।
zarIre ca trayaM yasya tatphalaM caikataH sthitam । ekato veNikAyAzca snAnajaMtuphalaM budhaiH 15 ।
Brahmā wishing to bestow beneficence weighed one against the other. He put on one side the benefit achieved by a person in whose body the three things were present.

तदेवं तुलितं पूर्वं ब्रह्मणाहितकारिणा । समानं चैव तज्जातं तस्माद्धार्यं सदा बुधैः १६ ।
tadevaM tulitaM pUrvaM brahmaNAhitakAriNA । samAnaM caiva tajjAtaM tasmAddhAryaM sadA budhaiH 16 ।
On the other side he put the blessedness achieved by those who took their bath in the holy Triveṇī. Both were found equal. Hence scholars shall wear these always.

तद्दिनं हि समारभ्य ब्रह्मविष्ण्वादिभिः सरैः । धार्यते त्रितयं तच्च दर्शनात्पापहारकम् १७ ।
taddinaM hi samArabhya brahmaviSNvAdibhiH saraiH । dhAryate tritayaM tacca darzanAtpApahArakam 17 ।
From that time onwards Brahmā, Viṣṇu and other Devas wear these three. Their very sight dispels sins.

ऋष्य ऊचुः । ईदृशं हि फलं प्रोक्तं नामादित्रितयोद्भवम् । तन्माहात्म्यं विशेषेण वक्तुमर्हसि सुव्रत १८ ।
RSya UcuH । IdRzaM hi phalaM proktaM nAmAditritayodbhavam । tanmAhAtmyaM vizeSeNa vaktumarhasi suvrata 18 ।
The sages said: O righteous one, you have explained the benefit of the three things: Śiva’s name etc. Please explain it vividly.

सूत उवाच । ऋषयो हि महाप्राज्ञाः सच्छैवा ज्ञानिनां वराः । तन्माहात्म्यं हि सद्भक्त्या शृणुतादरतो द्विजाः १९ ।
sUta uvAca । RSayo hi mahAprAjJAH sacchaivA jJAninAM varAH । tanmAhAtmyaM hi sadbhaktyA zRNutAdarato dvijAH 19 ।
Sūta said: O brahmanical sages, you are all good devotees of Śiva, gifted with knowledge and great intellect. You are the foremost among the wise. Please listen with reverence to their greatness.

सुगूढमपि शास्त्रेषु पुराणेषु श्रुतिष्वपि । भवत्स्नेहान्मया विप्राः प्रकाशः क्रियतेऽधुना 1-23-२० ।
sugUDhamapi zAstreSu purANeSu zrutiSvapi । bhavatsnehAnmayA viprAH prakAzaH kriyate'dhunA 1-23-20 ।
O brahmins, it is mysteriously hidden in sacred texts, Vedas and Purāṇas. Out of love for you I reveal the same to you now.

कस्तत्त्रितयमाहात्म्यं संजानाति द्विजोत्तमाः । महेश्वरं विना सर्वं ब्रह्माण्डे सदसत्परम् २१ ।
kastattritayamAhAtmyaM saMjAnAti dvijottamAH । mahezvaraM vinA sarvaM brahmANDe sadasatparam 21 ।
O foremost among the brahmins! Who ever does know the real greatness of the three except Śiva who is beyond all in the whole universe?

कस्तत्त्रितयमाहात्म्यं संजानाति द्विजोत्तमाः । महेश्वरं विना सर्वं ब्रह्माण्डे सदसत्परम् २१ ।वच्म्यहं नाम माहात्म्यं यथाभक्ति समासतः । शृणुत प्रीतितो विप्राः सर्वपापहरं परम् २२ ।
kastattritayamAhAtmyaM saMjAnAti dvijottamAH । mahezvaraM vinA sarvaM brahmANDe sadasatparam 21 ।vacmyahaM nAma mAhAtmyaM yathAbhakti samAsataH । zRNuta prItito viprAH sarvapApaharaM param 22 ।
Briefly I shall explain the greatness of the names as prompted by my devotion. O brahmins, do you lovingly listen to his greatness: the destroyer of all sins.

शिवेति नामदावाग्नेर्महापातकपर्वताः । भस्मीभवंत्यनायासात्सत्यंसत्यं न संशयः २३ ।
ziveti nAmadAvAgnermahApAtakaparvatAH । bhasmIbhavaMtyanAyAsAtsatyaMsatyaM na saMzayaH 23 ।
Mountainous heaps of great sins are destroyed as in a blazing forest fire when the names of Śiva are repeated. They are reduced to ashes without any difficulty. It is true, undoubtedly true.

पापमूलानि दुःखानि विविधान्यपि शौनक । शिवनामैकनश्यानि नान्यनश्यानि सर्वथा २४ ।
pApamUlAni duHkhAni vividhAnyapi zaunaka । zivanAmaikanazyAni nAnyanazyAni sarvathA 24 ।
O Śaunaka, different sorts of miseries with sins as their roots can be quelled only by muttering Śiva’s names, and not by anything else entirely.

स वैदिकः स पुण्यात्मा स धन्यस्स बुधो मतः । शिवनामजपासक्तो यो नित्यं भुवि मानव २५ ।
sa vaidikaH sa puNyAtmA sa dhanyassa budho mataH । zivanAmajapAsakto yo nityaM bhuvi mAnava 25 ।
The man who is devotedly attached to the Japas of Śiva’s names in the world, is really a follower of the Vedas, a meritorious soul and a blessed scholar.

भवंति विविधा धर्मास्तेषां सद्यः फलोन्मुखाः । येषां भवति विश्वासः शिवनामजपे मुने २६ ।
bhavaMti vividhA dharmAsteSAM sadyaH phalonmukhAH । yeSAM bhavati vizvAsaH zivanAmajape mune 26 ।
O sage, instantaneously fruitful are the different sacred rites of those who have full faith in the efficacy of the Japas of Śiva’s names.

पातकानि विनश्यंति यावंति शिवनामतः । भुवि तावंति पापानि क्रियंते न नरैर्मुने २७ ।
pAtakAni vinazyaMti yAvaMti zivanAmataH । bhuvi tAvaMti pApAni kriyaMte na narairmune 27 ।
O sage, so many sins are not committed by men in the world as are and can be destroyed by Śiva’s names.

ब्रह्महत्यादिपापानां राशीनप्रमितान्मुने । शिवनाम द्रुतं प्रोक्तं नाशयत्यखिलान्नरैः २८ ।
brahmahatyAdipApAnAM rAzInapramitAnmune । zivanAma drutaM proktaM nAzayatyakhilAnnaraiH 28 ।
O sage, Śiva’s names repeated by men, immediately destroy the countless heaps of sins such as the slaughter of a brahmin.

शिवनामतरीं प्राप्य संसाराब्धिं तरंति ये । संसारमूलपापानि तानि नश्यंत्यसंशयम् २९ ।
zivanAmatarIM prApya saMsArAbdhiM taraMti ye । saMsAramUlapApAni tAni nazyaMtyasaMzayam 29 ।
Those who cross the ocean of worldly existence by resorting to the raft of the names of Śiva do definitely destroy those sins that are the root-cause of worldly existence.

संसारमूलभूतानां पातकानां महामुने । शिवनामकुठारेण विनाशो जायते ध्रुवम् 1-23-३० ।
saMsAramUlabhUtAnAM pAtakAnAM mahAmune । zivanAmakuThAreNa vinAzo jAyate dhruvam 1-23-30 ।
O great sage, the destruction of sins that are the roots of worldly existence is certainly effected by the axe of Śiva’s names.

शिवनामामृतं पेयं पापदावानलार्दितैः । पापदावाग्नितप्तानां शांतिस्तेन विना न हि ३१ ।
zivanAmAmRtaM peyaM pApadAvAnalArditaiH । pApadAvAgnitaptAnAM zAMtistena vinA na hi 31 ।
The nectar of Śiva’s names shall be drunk by those who are distressed and scorched by the conflagration of sins. Without it, the people who are scorched by the conflagration cannot have any peace.

शिवेति नामपीयूषवर्षधारापरिप्लुताः । संसारदवमध्येपि न शोचंति कदाचन ३२ ।
ziveti nAmapIyUSavarSadhArApariplutAH । saMsAradavamadhyepi na zocaMti kadAcana 32 ।
Those who are drenched by the nectarine downpour of Śiva’s names never feel ill at ease even in the middle of the conflagration of worldly existence.

शिवनाम्नि महद्भक्तिर्जाता येषां महात्मनाम् । तद्विधानां तु सहसा मुक्तिर्भवति सर्वथा ३३ ।
zivanAmni mahadbhaktirjAtA yeSAM mahAtmanAm । tadvidhAnAM tu sahasA muktirbhavati sarvathA 33 ।
The noble souls who have acquired great devotion to the names of Śiva, and those like them, attain perfect liberation instantaneously.

अनेकजन्मभिर्येन तपस्तप्तं मुनीश्वर । शिवनाम्नि भवेद्भक्तिः सर्वपापापहारिणी ३४ ।
anekajanmabhiryena tapastaptaM munIzvara । zivanAmni bhavedbhaktiH sarvapApApahAriNI 34 ।
O lord of sages, devotion to the names of Śiva, that destroys all sins can be acquired only by him who has performed penances in the course of many births.

यस्या साधारणं शंभुनाम्नि भक्तिरखंडिता । तस्यैव मोक्षः सुलभो नान्यस्येति मतिर्मम ३५ ।
yasyA sAdhAraNaM zaMbhunAmni bhaktirakhaMDitA । tasyaiva mokSaH sulabho nAnyasyeti matirmama 35 ।
Salvation is easy of access only to him who has extraordinary and unbroken devotion for the names of Śiva. I believe in this.

कृत्वाप्यनेकपापानि शिवनामजपादरः । सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तो भवत्येव न संशयः ३६ ।
kRtvApyanekapApAni zivanAmajapAdaraH । sarvapApavinirmukto bhavatyeva na saMzayaH 36 ।
Even if he has committed many sins, a person who has reverence for the Japa of Śiva’s names, becomes certainly free from all sins.

भवंति भस्मसाद्वृक्षा दवदग्धा यथा वने । तथा तावंति दग्धानि पापानि शिवनामतः ३७ ।
bhavaMti bhasmasAdvRkSA davadagdhA yathA vane । tathA tAvaMti dagdhAni pApAni zivanAmataH 37 ।
Just as the trees in a forest are burnt and reduced to ashes by the forest fire, so also are the sins destroyed by Śiva’s names.

यो नित्यं भस्मपूतांगः शिवनामजपादरः । संतरत्येव संसारं सघोरमपि शौनक ३८ ।
yo nityaM bhasmapUtAMgaH zivanAmajapAdaraH । saMtaratyeva saMsAraM saghoramapi zaunaka 38 ।
O Saunaka, he who regularly sanctifies his body by the holy ashes and who performs the Japa of Śiva’s names crosses even the terrible ocean of worldly existence.

ब्रह्मस्वहरणं कृत्वा हत्वापि ब्राह्मणान्बहून् । न लिप्यते नरः पापैः शिवनामजपादरः ३९ ।
brahmasvaharaNaM kRtvA hatvApi brAhmaNAnbahUn । na lipyate naraH pApaiH zivanAmajapAdaraH 39 ।
A person who undertakes the Japa of Śiva’s names is not sullied by sins even after misappropriating a brahmin’s wealth and killing many brahmins.

कृत्वाप्यनेकपापानि शिवनामजपादरः । सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तो भवत्येव न संशयः ३६ ।
kRtvApyanekapApAni zivanAmajapAdaraH । sarvapApavinirmukto bhavatyeva na saMzayaH 36 ।
After going through all the Vedas it has been decided by our ancestors that the noblest means of crossing the ocean of worldly existence is the performance of the Japa of Śiva’s names.

किं बहूक्त्या मुनिश्रेष्ठाः श्लोकेनैकेन वच्म्यहम् । शिवनाम्नो महिमानं सर्वपापापहारिणम् ४१ ।
kiM bahUktyA munizreSThAH zlokenaikena vacmyaham । zivanAmno mahimAnaM sarvapApApahAriNam 41 ।
O excellent sages, why should I say much? By means of a single verse I shall mention the greatness and efficacy of the names of Śiva or the destruction of all sins.

पापानां हरणे शंभोर्नामः शक्तिर्हि पावनी । शक्नोति पातकं तावत्कर्तुं नापि नरः क्वचित् ४२ ।

O sage, formerly the king Indradyumna who was a great sinner, attained the excellent goal of the good through the influence of Śiva’s names.
