RSaya UcuH । sUta sUta mahAbhAga vyAsaziSya namostu te । samyaguktaM tvayA tAta pArthivArcAvidhAnakam 1 ।
The sages said:O Sūta, O Sūta the fortunate, disciple of Vyāsa, obeisance be to Thee. Thou hast clearly explained the procedure of the worship of the earthen phallic images.

कामनाभेदमाश्रित्य संख्यां ब्रूहि विधानतः । शिवपार्थिवलिंगानां कृपया दीनवत्सल २ ।
kAmanAbhedamAzritya saMkhyAM brUhi vidhAnataH । zivapArthivaliMgAnAM kRpayA dInavatsala 2 ।
Now kindly explain the number of phallic images as based on the wishes one may have. Thou art favourably disposed to the distressed and the miserable.

sUta uvAca । zRNudhvamRSayaH sarve pArthivArcAvidhAnakam । yasyAnuSThAnamAtreNa kRtakRtyo bhavennaraH 3 ।
Sūta said: O sages, you listen to the rules of procedure in the worship of earthen phallic image, by following which a man reaps full satisfaction.

अकृत्वा पार्थिवं लिंगं योन्यदेवं प्रपूजयेत् । वृथा भवति सा पूजा दमदानादिकं वृथा ४ ।
akRtvA pArthivaM liMgaM yonyadevaM prapUjayet । vRthA bhavati sA pUjA damadAnAdikaM vRthA 4 ।
If any one worships another deity without making the earthen phallic image, his worship shall be fruitless. His restraint and charitable gifts go in vain.

saMkhyA pArthivaliMgAnAM yathAkAmaM nigadyate । saMkhyA sadyo munizreSTha nizcayena phalapradA 5 ।
The number of earthen phallic images in regard to different desires is being stipulated which will, O foremost among sages, certainly yield the benefit.

प्रथमावाहनं तत्र प्रतिष्ठा पूजनं पृथक् । लिंगाकारं समं तत्र सर्वं ज्ञेयं पृथक्पृथक् ६ ।
prathamAvAhanaM tatra pratiSThA pUjanaM pRthak । liMgAkAraM samaM tatra sarvaM jJeyaM pRthakpRthak 6 ।
The first invocation, installation and worship are all separate. Only the shape of the phallic image is the same. Everything else is different.

vidyArthI puruSaH prItyA sahasramitapArthivam । pUjayecchivaliMgaM hi nizcayAttatphalapradam 7 ।
A person who seeks learning shall with pleasure make a thousand earthen phallic images and offer worship. Certainly he will get that benefit.

नरः पार्थिवलिंगानां धनार्थी च तदर्द्धकम् । पुत्रार्थी सार्द्धसाहस्रं वस्त्रार्थी शतपंचक्रम् ८ ।
naraH pArthivaliMgAnAM dhanArthI ca tadarddhakam । putrArthI sArddhasAhasraM vastrArthI zatapaMcakram 8 ।
A person desirous of wealth shall make five hundred earthen phallic images; wishing for a son—a thousand five hundred; wishing for garments—five hundred.

मोक्षार्थी कोटिगुणितं भूकामश्च सहस्रकम् । दयार्थी च त्रिसाहस्रं तीर्थार्थी द्विसहस्रकम् ९ ।
mokSArthI koTiguNitaM bhUkAmazca sahasrakam । dayArthI ca trisAhasraM tIrthArthI dvisahasrakam 9 ।
A person desirous of salvation—a crore; desirous of lands—a thousand; craving for mercy—three thousand; desirous of a holy centre—two thousand.

suhRtkAmI trisAhasraM vazyArthI zatamaSTakam । mAraNArthI saptazataM mohanArthI zatASTakam 1-21-10 ।
A person desirous of friends—three thousand; desirous of the power of controlling—eight hundred; desirous of bringing about the death of a person—seven hundred; desirous of enchanting—eight hundred.

uccATanaparazcaiva sahasraM ca yathoktataH । staMbhanArthI sahasraM tu dveSaNArthI tadarddhakam 11 ।
A person desirous of sweeping off his foes—a thousand; desirous of numbifying—a thousand; desirous of kindling hatred—five hundred.

निगडान्मुक्तिकामस्तु सहस्रं सर्द्धमुत्तमम् । महाराजभये पंचशतं ज्ञेयं विचक्षणैः १२ ।
nigaDAnmuktikAmastu sahasraM sarddhamuttamam । mahArAjabhaye paMcazataM jJeyaM vicakSaNaiH 12 ।
A person desirous of freeing himself from fetters—a thousand five hundred. If there is fear from a great king—five hundred.

चौरादिसंकटे ज्ञेयं पार्थिवानां शतद्वयम् । डाकिन्यादिभये पंचशतमुक्तं जपार्थिवम् १३ ।
caurAdisaMkaTe jJeyaM pArthivAnAM zatadvayam । DAkinyAdibhaye paMcazatamuktaM japArthivam 13 ।
If there is danger from thieves, robbers etc.—two hundred; if there is the evil influence of Ḍākinī॥ 1॥ and other foul spirits—five hundred.

दारिद्र ये! पंचसाहस्रमयुतं सर्वकामदम् । अथ नित्यविधिं वक्ष्ये शृणुध्वं मुनिसत्तमाः १४ ।
dAridra ye! paMcasAhasramayutaM sarvakAmadam । atha nityavidhiM vakSye zRNudhvaM munisattamAH 14 ।
In poverty—five thousand. If ten thousand such are made, all wishes will be fulfilled. O great sages, I shall now mention the daily procedure. Please listen.

एकं पापहरं प्रोक्तं द्विलिंगं चार्थसिद्धिदम् । त्रिलिंगं सर्वकामानां कारणं परमीरितम् १५ ।
ekaM pApaharaM proktaM dviliMgaM cArthasiddhidam । triliMgaM sarvakAmAnAM kAraNaM paramIritam 15 ।
One such is said to remove sins. Two confer wealth. Three are mentioned as the cause for the fulfilment of all desires.

उत्तरोत्तरमेवं स्यात्पूर्वोक्तगणनाविधि । मतांतरमथो वक्ष्ये संख्यायां मुनिभेदतः १६ ।
uttarottaramevaM syAtpUrvoktagaNanAvidhi । matAMtaramatho vakSye saMkhyAyAM munibhedataH 16 ।
Above this, more and more benefits accrue until the stipulated number is reached. I shall now mention another opinion coming from a different sage.

लिंगानामयुतं कृत्वा पार्थिवानां सुबुद्धिमान् । निर्भयो हि भवेन्नूनं महाराजभयं हरेत् १७ ।
liMgAnAmayutaM kRtvA pArthivAnAM subuddhimAn । nirbhayo hi bhavennUnaM mahArAjabhayaM haret 17 ।
An intelligent person can certainly remain fearless after making such ten thousand images. It removes the fear from great kings.

कारागृहादिमुक्त्यर्थमयुतं कारयेद्बुधः । डाकिन्यादिभये सप्तसहस्रं कारयेत्तथा १८ ।
kArAgRhAdimuktyarthamayutaM kArayedbudhaH । DAkinyAdibhaye saptasahasraM kArayettathA 18 ।
A sensible man shall cause ten thousand such to be made for freedom from imprisonment. When there is the fear of the evil influence of Ḍākinī and other evil spirits he shall cause seven thousand such to be made.

सहस्राणि पंचपंचाशदपुत्रः प्रकारयेत् । लिंगानामयुतेनैव कन्यकासंततिं लभेत् १९ ।
sahasrANi paMcapaMcAzadaputraH prakArayet । liMgAnAmayutenaiva kanyakAsaMtatiM labhet 19 ।
A person having no sons shall cause fifty-five thousand such to be made. One shall get daughters by causing ten thousand such to be made.

लिंगानामयुतेनैव विष्ण्वादैश्वर्यमाप्नुयात् । लिंगानां प्रयुतेनैव ह्यतुलां श्रियमाप्नुयात् 1-21-२० ।
liMgAnAmayutenaiva viSNvAdaizvaryamApnuyAt । liMgAnAM prayutenaiva hyatulAM zriyamApnuyAt 1-21-20 ।
A devotee shall achieve the prosperity and splendour of Viṣṇu and others by making ten thousand images. He shall derive unrivalled glory and wealth by making one million images.

कोटिमेकां तु लिंगानां यः करोति नरो भुवि । शिव एव भवेत्सोपि नात्र कार्य्या विचारणा २१ ।
koTimekAM tu liMgAnAM yaH karoti naro bhuvi । ziva eva bhavetsopi nAtra kAryyA vicAraNA 21 ।
Surely if a man makes a crore he shall become Śiva Himself.

अर्चा पार्थिवलिंगानां कोटियज्ञफलप्रदा । भुक्तिदा मुक्तिदा नित्यं ततः कामर्थिनां नृणाम् २२ ।
arcA pArthivaliMgAnAM koTiyajJaphalapradA । bhuktidA muktidA nityaM tataH kAmarthinAM nRNAm 22 ।
The worship of earthen phallic images accords the the benefit of a crore sacrifices. It gives all worldly pleasures and salvation to those who desire them.

विना लिंगार्चनं यस्य कालो गच्छति नित्यशः । महाहानिर्भवेत्तस्य दुर्वृत्तस्य दुरात्मनः २३ ।
vinA liMgArcanaM yasya kAlo gacchati nityazaH । mahAhAnirbhavettasya durvRttasya durAtmanaH 23 ।
He who spends his time in vain without worship of such images will incur great loss. He is no better than a wicked, evil-souled man.

एकतः सर्वदानानि व्रतानि विविधानि च । तीर्थानि नियमा यज्ञा लिंगार्चा चैकतः स्मृता २४ ।
ekataH sarvadAnAni vratAni vividhAni ca । tIrthAni niyamA yajJA liMgArcA caikataH smRtA 24 ।
If the worship of such images is weighed against all the charitable gifts, sacred rites, holy centres, restraints and sacrifices, both will be found equal.

कलौ लिंगार्चनं श्रेष्ठं तथा लोके प्रदृश्यते । तथा नास्तीति शास्त्राणामेष सिद्धान्तनिश्चयः २५ ।
kalau liMgArcanaM zreSThaM tathA loke pradRzyate । tathA nAstIti zAstrANAmeSa siddhAntanizcayaH 25 ।
In the age of Kali the worship of the phallic image is excellent as is evident from what we see in the world. There is nothing else. This is the conclusion of all sacred texts and religious cults.

भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदं लिंगं विविधापन्निवारणम् । पूजयित्वा नरो नित्यं शिवसायुज्यमाप्नुयात् २६ ।
bhuktimuktipradaM liMgaM vividhApannivAraNam । pUjayitvA naro nityaM zivasAyujyamApnuyAt 26 ।
The phallic image yields worldly pleasures and salvation. It wards off different sorts of mishaps. By worshipping it, man attains identity with Śiva.

शिवानाममयं लिंगं नित्यं पूज्यं महर्षिभिः । यतश्च सर्वलिंगेषु तस्मात्पूज्यं विधानतः २७ ।
zivAnAmamayaM liMgaM nityaM pUjyaM maharSibhiH । yatazca sarvaliMgeSu tasmAtpUjyaM vidhAnataH 27 ।
Since the phallic image is enjoined to be worshipped even by the sages, it shall be worshipped by every one in the manner stipulated.

उत्तमं मध्यमं नीचं त्रिविधं लिंगमीरितम् । मानतो मुनिशार्दूलास्तच्छृणुध्वं वदाम्यहम् २८ ।
uttamaM madhyamaM nIcaM trividhaM liMgamIritam । mAnato munizArdUlAstacchRNudhvaM vadAmyaham 28 ।
Based on sizes the images are of three types—Excellent (Uttama), normal (Madhyama) and inferior (Nīca). O foremost of sages, I shall explain them, please listen.

चतुरंगुलमुच्छ्रायं रम्यं वेदिकया युतम् । उत्तमं लिंगमाख्यातं मुनिभिः शास्त्रकोविदैः २९ ।
caturaMgulamucchrAyaM ramyaM vedikayA yutam । uttamaM liMgamAkhyAtaM munibhiH zAstrakovidaiH 29 ।
A phallic image, four angulas (inches) in height, with a splendid pedestal is mentioned as the most excellent by sages who are well-versed in sacred lore.

तदर्द्धं मध्यमं प्रोक्तं तदर्द्धमघमं स्मृतम् । इत्थं त्रिविधमाख्यातमुत्तरोत्तरतः परम् 1-21-३० ।
tadarddhaM madhyamaM proktaM tadarddhamaghamaM smRtam । itthaM trividhamAkhyAtamuttarottarataH param 1-21-30 ।
Half of that is middling. Half of this latter is inferior. Thus I have mentioned three types of phallic images.

अनेकलिंगं यो नित्यं भक्तिश्रद्धासमन्वितः । पूजयेत्स लभेत्कामान्मनसा मानसेप्सितान् ३१ ।
anekaliMgaM yo nityaM bhaktizraddhAsamanvitaH । pUjayetsa labhetkAmAnmanasA mAnasepsitAn 31 ।
He who worships many such images every day with great devotion and faith can achieve the fulfilment of any desire conceived in his heart.

न लिंगाराधनादन्यत्पुण्यं वेदचतुष्टये । विद्यते सर्वशास्त्राणामेष एव विनिश्चयः ३२ ।
na liMgArAdhanAdanyatpuNyaM vedacatuSTaye । vidyate sarvazAstrANAmeSa eva vinizcayaH 32 ।
In the four Vedas, nothing else is mentioned so holy as the worship of the phallic image. This is the conclusion arrived at in all sacred lores.

सर्वमेतत्परित्यज्य कर्मजालमशेषतः । भक्त्या परमया विद्वाँ ल्लिंगमेकं प्रपूजयेत् ३३ ।
sarvametatparityajya karmajAlamazeSataH । bhaktyA paramayA vidvA~ lliMgamekaM prapUjayet 33 ।
All other rites can entirely be abandoned. A really learned man shall worship only the phallic image with great devotion.

लिंगेर्चितेर्चितं सर्वं जगत्स्थावरजंगमम् । संसारांबुधिमग्नानां नान्यत्तारणसाधनम् ३४ ।
liMgercitercitaM sarvaM jagatsthAvarajaMgamam । saMsArAMbudhimagnAnAM nAnyattAraNasAdhanam 34 ।
If the phallic image is worshipped, it means that the entire universe consisting of the mobile and the immobile has been worshipped. There is no other means to save persons submerged in the ocean of worldly existence.

अज्ञानतिमिरांधानां विषयासक्तचेतसाम् । प्लवो नान्योस्ति जगति लिंगाराधनमंतरा ३५ ।
ajJAnatimirAMdhAnAM viSayAsaktacetasAm । plavo nAnyosti jagati liMgArAdhanamaMtarA 35 ।
Men of the world are blind due to ignorance. Their minds are sullied by worldly desires. Except for the worship of the phallic image there is no other raft to save them from destruction.

हरिब्रह्मादयो देवा मुनयो यक्षराक्षसाः । गंधर्वाश्चरणास्सिद्धा दैतेया दानवास्तथा ३६ ।
haribrahmAdayo devA munayo yakSarAkSasAH । gaMdharvAzcaraNAssiddhA daiteyA dAnavAstathA 36 ।
The gods such as Vishnu, Brahma, the sages, the Yakshas, the Rakshasas, the Gandharvas, the Charanas, the Siddhas, the Daityas, and the Danavas are all devoted to Lord Shiva.

नागाः शेषप्रभृतयो गरुडाद्याःखगास्तथा । सप्रजापतयश्चान्ये मनवः किन्नरा नराः ३७ ।
nAgAH zeSaprabhRtayo garuDAdyAHkhagAstathA । saprajApatayazcAnye manavaH kinnarA narAH 37 ।
The Nagas, starting with Shesha, the Garuda and other birds, along with the Prajapatis, Manu, Kinnaras, and humans, are all devotees of Lord Shiva.

पूजयित्वा महाभक्त्या लिंगं सर्वार्थसिद्धिदम् । प्राप्ताः कामानभीष्टांश्च तांस्तान्सर्वान्हृदि स्थितान् ३८ ।
pUjayitvA mahAbhaktyA liMgaM sarvArthasiddhidam । prAptAH kAmAnabhISTAMzca tAMstAnsarvAnhRdi sthitAn 38 ।
By worshiping the Shiva Linga with great devotion, one attains the fulfillment of all desires. Those who do so will realize their desires and all their goals, as these desires are established in the heart.

ब्राह्मणः क्षत्रियो वैश्यः शूद्रो वा प्रतिलोमजः । पूजयेत्सततं लिंगं तत्तन्मंत्रेण सादरम् ३९ ।
brAhmaNaH kSatriyo vaizyaH zUdro vA pratilomajaH । pUjayetsatataM liMgaM tattanmaMtreNa sAdaram 39 ।
Brahmins, Kṣatriyas, Vaiśyas, Śūdras, persons born of inter-caste marriages and others shall worship the phallic icon with great devotion with the respective mantras.

किं बहूक्तेन मुनयः स्त्रीणामपि तथान्यतः । अधिकारोस्ति सर्वेषां शिवलिंगार्चने द्विजाः 1-21-४० ।
kiM bahUktena munayaH strINAmapi tathAnyataH । adhikArosti sarveSAM zivaliMgArcane dvijAH 1-21-40 ।
O brahmin sages, why shall I tell much? Even women and others are authorized in the worship of the phallic image.

द्विजानां वैदिकेनापि मार्गेणाराधनं वरम् । अन्येषामपि जंतूनां वैदिकेन न संमतम् ४१ ।
dvijAnAM vaidikenApi mArgeNArAdhanaM varam । anyeSAmapi jaMtUnAM vaidikena na saMmatam 41 ।
The twice-born can very well worship according to the Vedic rites but not so the others who are not authorized.

वैदिकानां द्विजानां च पूजा वैदिकमार्गतः । कर्तव्यानान्यमार्गेण इत्याह भगवाञ्छिवः ४२ ।
vaidikAnAM dvijAnAM ca pUjA vaidikamArgataH । kartavyAnAnyamArgeNa ityAha bhagavAJchivaH 42 ।
Lord Śiva Himself has enjoined that the twice-born shall perform the worship according to the Vedic rites and not by any other means.

But those Dvijas who have been cursed by Dadhīci, Gautama and others do not follow the Vedic rites faithfully.

The man who rejects the Vedic rites and follows those laid down in Smṛtis or any other rite will not derive the conceived fruit.

The true devotee after performing worship in the prescribed manner shall worship the eight॥ 2॥ cosmic bodies (of Śiva) consisting of the three worlds.

The Earth, the waters, the fire, the wind, the Ether, the sun, the moon and the sacrificer—these are the eight cosmic bodies.

Śarva, Bhava, Rudra, Ugra, Bhīma, Īśvara, Mahādeva and Paśupati are the manifestations of Śiva who shall be worshipped with these cosmic bodies respectively.

Then he shall worship retinue of Śiva with great devotion with sandal paste, raw rice and holy leaves in the quarters beginning with North-east.

IzAnaM naMdinaM caMDaM mahAkAlaM ca bhRMgiNam । vRSaM skaMdaM kapardIzaM somaM zukraM ca tatkramAt 49 ।
They are Īśāna, Nandī, Caṇḍa, Mahākāla, Bhṛṅgin, Vṛṣa, Skanda, Kapardīśa, Soma and Śukra.

Vīrabhadra in front and Kīrtimukha at the back. Then he shall worship eleven Rudras.

tataH paMcAkSaraM japtvA zatarudri yameva ca । stutIrnAnAvidhAH kRtvA paMcAMgapaThanaM tathA 51 ।
Then he shall repeat the five-syllabled mantra, Śatarudriya, many Saiva hymns and read Pañcāṅga and perform circumambulation.

tataH pradakSiNAM kRtvA natvA liMgaM visarjayet । iti proktamazeSaM ca zivapUjanamAdarAt 52 ।
After obeisance he shall bid farewell to the phallic image. Thus have I mentioned the worship of Śiva with due devotion.

रात्रावुदण्मुखः कुर्याद्देवकार्यं सदैव हि । शिवार्चनं सदाप्येवं शुचिः कुर्यादुदण्मुखः ५३ ।
rAtrAvudaNmukhaH kuryAddevakAryaM sadaiva hi । zivArcanaM sadApyevaM zuciH kuryAdudaNmukhaH 53 ।
Divine rites shall always be performed facing the north in the night. Similarly Śiva’s worship shall always be performed facing the north, not the east.

न प्राचीमग्रतः शंभोर्नोदीचीं शक्तिसंहितान् । न प्रतीचीं यतः पृष्ठमतो ग्राह्यं समाश्रयेत् ५४ ।
na prAcImagrataH zaMbhornodIcIM zaktisaMhitAn । na pratIcIM yataH pRSThamato grAhyaM samAzrayet 54 ।
Śaktisaṃhitā shall not be recited facing the north or the west since it is the back.

विना भस्मत्रिपुंड्रेण विना रुद्रा क्षमालया । बिल्वपत्रं विना नैव पूजयेच्छंकरं बुधः ५५ ।
vinA bhasmatripuMDreNa vinA rudrA kSamAlayA । bilvapatraM vinA naiva pUjayecchaMkaraM budhaH 55 ।
Śiva shall not be worshipped without Tripuṇḍra, Rudrākṣa and Bilvapatra. O best of sages! when the worship is on, if the ash is not available, Tripuṇḍra, (three lines on the forehead) shall be drawn with the white clay.

bhasmAprAptau munizreSThAH pravRtte zivapUjane । tasmAnmRdApi kartavyaM lalATe ca tripuMDrakam 56 ।
When the great sages (munis) attain ashes (bhasma) and engage in the worship of Lord Shiva, they must mark their forehead with the Tripundra, even with mud (if necessary).
