RSaya UcuH । sUta sUta ciraMjIva dhanyastvaM zivabhaktimAn । samyaguktastvayA liMgamahimA satphalapradaH 1 ।
The sages said: O Sūta, Sūta, be long-lived. Thou art a blessed devotee of Śiva. The greatness of Siva’s phallic image in according excellent benefit has been well explained by you.

Now speak about the greatness of Earthen phallic image of Śiva which is far superior to all others.

sUta uvAca । zRNudhvamRSayaH sarve sadbhaktyA harato khilAH । zivapArthivaliMgasya mahimA procyate mayA 3 ।
Sūta said: O sages, please listen all of you with great devotion and respect. Now I am going to speak on the greatness of earthly phallic image of Siva.

उक्तेष्वेतेषु लिंगेषु पार्थिवं लिंगमुत्तमम् । तस्य पूजनतो विप्रा बहवः सिद्धिमागताः ४ ।
ukteSveteSu liMgeSu pArthivaM liMgamuttamam । tasya pUjanato viprA bahavaH siddhimAgatAH 4 ।
The Earthly phallic image of Śiva is the most excellent of all such images of Śiva. Many brahmins have achieved great things by worshipping it.

harirbrahmA ca RSayaH saprajApatayastathA । saMpUjya pArthivaM liMgaM prApuHsarvepsitaM dvijAH 5 ।
O brahmins, Hari, Brahmā, Prajāpati and other sages have attained all they desired by worshipping this Earthly phallic image.

देवासुरमनुष्याश्च गंधर्वोरगराक्षसाः । अन्येपि बहवस्तं संपूज्य सिद्धिं गताः परम् ६ ।
devAsuramanuSyAzca gaMdharvoragarAkSasAH । anyepi bahavastaM saMpUjya siddhiM gatAH param 6 ।
Devas, Asuras, men, Gandharvas, serpents, Rākṣasas and many others have attained greatness after worshipping it.

कृते रत्नमयं लिंगं त्रेतायां हेमसंभवम् । द्वापरे पारदं श्रेष्ठं पार्थिवं तु कलौ युगे ७ ।
kRte ratnamayaM liMgaM tretAyAM hemasaMbhavam । dvApare pAradaM zreSThaM pArthivaM tu kalau yuge 7 ।
The phallic emblem of Śiva made of precious gems was considered the best in the Kṛta age; of pure gold in the Dvāpara; of mercury in the Tretā and of earth in the Kali age.

अष्टमूर्तिषु सर्वासु मूर्तिर्वै पार्थिवी वरा । अनन्यपूजिता विप्रास्तपस्तस्मान्महत्फलम् ८ ।
aSTamUrtiSu sarvAsu mUrtirvai pArthivI varA । ananyapUjitA viprAstapastasmAnmahatphalam 8 ।
Among the eight cosmic bodies of Śiva, the Earthen body is the best. Since it is not worshipped by any one else O Brāhmaṇas! it yields great benefit.

यथा सर्वेषु देवेषु ज्येष्ठः श्रेष्ठो महेश्वरः । एवं सर्वेषु लिंगेषु पार्थिवं श्रेष्टमुच्यते ९ ।
yathA sarveSu deveSu jyeSThaH zreSTho mahezvaraH । evaM sarveSu liMgeSu pArthivaM zreSTamucyate 9 ।
Just as Śiva is the oldest and the most excellent of all deities, so also his earthly phallic image is the most excellent of all.

यथा नदीषु सर्वासु ज्येष्ठा श्रेष्ठा सुरापगा । तथा सर्वेषु लिंगेषु पार्थिवं श्रेष्ठमुच्यते 1-19-१० ।
yathA nadISu sarvAsu jyeSThA zreSThA surApagA । tathA sarveSu liMgeSu pArthivaM zreSThamucyate 1-19-10 ।
Just as the celestial river Gaṅgā is the oldest and the most excellent of all rivers, so also is the earthen phallic image of Śiva the most excellent of all.

यथा सर्वेषु मंत्रेषु प्रणवो हि महान्स्मृतः । तथेदं पार्थिवं श्रेष्ठमाराध्यं पूज्यमेव हि ११ ।
yathA sarveSu maMtreSu praNavo hi mahAnsmRtaH । tathedaM pArthivaM zreSThamArAdhyaM pUjyameva hi 11 ।
Just as the Praṇava is considered the greatest of all mantras, so also the earthen phallic image of Śiva that is worthy to be worshipped, is the most excellent of all.

यथा सर्वेषु वर्णेषु ब्राह्मणःश्रेष्ठ उच्यते । तथा सर्वेषु लिंगेषु पार्थिवं श्रेष्ठमुच्यते १२ ।
yathA sarveSu varNeSu brAhmaNaHzreSTha ucyate । tathA sarveSu liMgeSu pArthivaM zreSThamucyate 12 ।
Just as the brahmin is spoken of as the most excellent of all Varṇas so also is the earthen phallic image of Śiva the most excellent of all other phallic images.

यथा पुरीषु सर्वासु काशीश्रेष्ठतमा स्मृता । तथा सर्वेषु लिंगेषु पार्थिवं श्रेष्ठमुच्यते १३ ।
yathA purISu sarvAsu kAzIzreSThatamA smRtA । tathA sarveSu liMgeSu pArthivaM zreSThamucyate 13 ।
Just as Kāśī is considered the most excellent of all holy cities, so also the earthly phallic image of Śiva is spoken of as the most excellent of all other phallic images.

यथा व्रतेषु सर्वेषु शिवरात्रिव्रतं परम् । तथा सर्वेषु लिंगेषु पार्थिवं श्रेष्थमुच्यते १४ ।
yathA vrateSu sarveSu zivarAtrivrataM param । tathA sarveSu liMgeSu pArthivaM zreSthamucyate 14 ।
Just as the rite of Śivarātri is the greatest of all sacred rites so also the earthly phallic image of Śiva is the most excellent of all other phallic images.

यथा देवीषु सर्वासु शैवीशक्तिः परास्मृता । तथा सर्वेषु लिंगेषु पार्थिवं श्रेष्ठमुच्यते १५ ।
yathA devISu sarvAsu zaivIzaktiH parAsmRtA । tathA sarveSu liMgeSu pArthivaM zreSThamucyate 15 ।
Just as Śiva’s energy is considered the greatest of all goddesses so also the earthen phallic emblem of Śiva is spoken of as the most excellent of all.

प्रकृत्यपार्थिवं लिंगं योन्यदेवं प्रपूजयेत् । वृथा भवति सा पूजा स्नानदानादिकं वृथा १६ ।
prakRtyapArthivaM liMgaM yonyadevaM prapUjayet । vRthA bhavati sA pUjA snAnadAnAdikaM vRthA 16 ।
Discarding the worship of the earthen phallic image if any one were to worship another deity, that worship becomes fruitless. Ceremonial ablutions, charitable gifts etc. are of no avail.

पार्थिवाराधनं पुण्यं धन्यमायुर्विवर्धनम् । तुष्टिदं पुष्टिदंश्रीदं कार्यं साधकसत्तमैः १७ ।
pArthivArAdhanaM puNyaM dhanyamAyurvivardhanam । tuSTidaM puSTidaMzrIdaM kAryaM sAdhakasattamaiH 17 ।
The propitiation of the earthen phallic image is sanctifying, bestower of bliss, longevity, satiety, nourishment and fortune. It must be observed by all good aspirants.

यथा लब्धोपचारैश्च भक्त्या श्रद्धासमन्वितः । पूजयेत्पार्थिवं लिंगं सर्वकामार्थसिद्धिदम् १८ ।
yathA labdhopacAraizca bhaktyA zraddhAsamanvitaH । pUjayetpArthivaM liMgaM sarvakAmArthasiddhidam 18 ।
A devotee endowed with unflinching faith shall worship the earthen phallic image with such modes of service as are easily available. It accords the achievement of all desired objects.

यः कृत्वा पार्थिवं लिंगे पूजयेच्छुभवेदिकम् । इहैव धनवाञ्छ्रीमानंते रुद्रो भिजायते १९ ।
yaH kRtvA pArthivaM liMge pUjayecchubhavedikam । ihaiva dhanavAJchrImAnaMte rudro bhijAyate 19 ।
He who worships the earthen phallic image after constructing an auspicious altar becomes affluent and glorious here itself and becomes Rudra in the end.

त्रिसंध्यं योर्चयंल्लिंगं कृत्वा बिल्वेन पार्थिवम् । दशैकादशकंयावत्तस्य पुण्यफलं शृणु 1-19-२० ।
trisaMdhyaM yorcayaMlliMgaM kRtvA bilvena pArthivam । dazaikAdazakaMyAvattasya puNyaphalaM zRNu 1-19-20 ।

अनेनैव स्वदेहेन रुद्र लोके महीयते । पापहं सर्वमर्त्यानां दर्शनात्स्पर्शनादपि २१ ।
anenaiva svadehena rudra loke mahIyate । pApahaM sarvamartyAnAM darzanAtsparzanAdapi 21 ।
He is honoured in Rudraloka with this body alone. His body dispels the sins of every man by mere sight or touch.

जीवन्मुक्तः स वैज्ञानी शिव एव न संशयः । तस्य दर्शनमात्रेण भुक्तिर्मुक्तिश्च जायते २२ ।
jIvanmuktaH sa vaijJAnI ziva eva na saMzayaH । tasya darzanamAtreNa bhuktirmuktizca jAyate 22 ।
He is a living liberated soul, he is wise, he is Śiva, there is no doubt. A mere sight of him accords enjoyment of worldly pleasures and salvation.

शिवं यः पूजयेन्नित्यं कृत्वा लिंगं तु पार्थिवम् । यावज्जीवनपर्यंतं स याति शिवमन्दिरम् २३ ।
zivaM yaH pUjayennityaM kRtvA liMgaM tu pArthivam । yAvajjIvanaparyaMtaM sa yAti zivamandiram 23 ।
He who worships the earthen phallic emblem of Śiva every day stays in Śivaloka for so many years of Śiva, as he had been visiting Śiva’s temple in his life.

मृडेनाप्रमितान्वर्षाञ्छिवलोकेहि तिष्ठति । सकामः पुनरागत्य राजेन्द्रो भारते भवेत् २४ ।
mRDenApramitAnvarSAJchivalokehi tiSThati । sakAmaH punarAgatya rAjendro bhArate bhavet 24 ।
If he had any wish he would be reborn in the land of Bharata as a sovereign monarch.

निष्कामः पूजयेन्नित्यं पार्थिवंलिंगमुत्तमम् । शिवलोके सदा तिष्ठेत्ततः सायुज्यमाप्नुयात् २५ ।
niSkAmaH pUjayennityaM pArthivaMliMgamuttamam । zivaloke sadA tiSThettataH sAyujyamApnuyAt 25 ।
If a man without any desire worships every day the excellent earthen phallic image, he shall stay in Śiva’s region for ever. He shall attain the Sāyujya type of salvation.

पार्थिवं शिवलिंगं च विप्रो यदि न पूजयेत् । स याति नरकं घोरं शूलप्रोतं सुदारुणम् २६ ।
pArthivaM zivaliMgaM ca vipro yadi na pUjayet । sa yAti narakaM ghoraM zUlaprotaM sudAruNam 26 ।
If a brahmin does not worship the earthen phallic image he shall fall in the terrible hell with a terrible trident pierced through his body.

यथाकथंचिद्विधिना रम्यं लिंगं प्रकारयेत् । पंचसूत्रविधानां च पार्थिवेन विचारयेत् २७ ।
yathAkathaMcidvidhinA ramyaM liMgaM prakArayet । paMcasUtravidhAnAM ca pArthivena vicArayet 27 ।
By any means the phallic image shall be made beautiful. The Pañcasatra rite shall be performed with the earthen phallic image.

अखण्डं तद्धि कर्तव्यं न विखण्डं प्रकारयेत् । द्विखण्डं तु प्रकुर्वाणो नैव पूजाफलं लभेत् २८ ।
akhaNDaM taddhi kartavyaM na vikhaNDaM prakArayet । dvikhaNDaM tu prakurvANo naiva pUjAphalaM labhet 28 ।
The earthen phallic image shall be made as a single whole. Making it piecemeal i.e if the image is made joining two or more pieces, he will never derive the merit of worship.

रत्नजं हेमजं लिंगं पारदं स्फाटिकं तथा । पार्थिवं पुष्परागोत्थमखंडं तु प्रकारयेत् २९ ।
ratnajaM hemajaM liMgaM pAradaM sphATikaM tathA । pArthivaM puSparAgotthamakhaMDaM tu prakArayet 29 ।
Whether it is made of gems, gold, mercury, crystals or Pusparāga it shall be a single whole.

अखंडं तु चरं लिंगं द्विखंडमचरं स्मृतम् । खंडाखंडविचारोयं सचराचरयोः स्मृतः 1-19-३० ।
akhaMDaM tu caraM liMgaM dvikhaMDamacaraM smRtam । khaMDAkhaMDavicAroyaM sacarAcarayoH smRtaH 1-19-30 ।
All mobile phallic emblems shall be a single whole. Stationary phallic images shall be made of two pieces. This is the rule about broken and unbroken phallic images both immobile or mobile.

वेदिका तु महाविद्या लिंगं देवो महेश्वरः । अतो हि स्थावरे लिंगे स्मृता श्रेष्ठादिखंडिता ३१ ।
vedikA tu mahAvidyA liMgaM devo mahezvaraH । ato hi sthAvare liMge smRtA zreSThAdikhaMDitA 31 ।
The pedestal is the great Māyā; the phallic image is lord Śiva. Hence in immobile image two-piece construction is recommended.

द्विखंडं स्थावरं लिंगं कर्तव्यं हि विधानतः । अखंडं जंगमं प्रोक्तंश् ऐवसिद्धान्तवेदिभिः ३२ ।
dvikhaMDaM sthAvaraM liMgaM kartavyaM hi vidhAnataH । akhaMDaM jaMgamaM proktaMz aivasiddhAntavedibhiH 32 ।
This has been mentioned by those who know the principles of Śaiva cult that a stationary phallic image shall be made of two pieces.

द्विखंडं तु चरां लिंगं कुर्वन्त्यज्ञानमोहिताः । नैव सिद्धान्तवेत्तारो मुनयः शास्त्रकोविदाः ३३ ।
dvikhaMDaM tu carAM liMgaM kurvantyajJAnamohitAH । naiva siddhAntavettAro munayaH zAstrakovidAH 33 ।
Only those who are deluded by ignorance make the mobile phallic image of two pieces. The sages who know the Śaiva cult; and are well versed in Śaiva Sacred texts do not enjoin that.

अखंडं स्थावरं लिंगं द्विखंडं चरमेव च । येकुर्वन्तिनरामूढानपूजाफलभागिनः ३४ ।
akhaMDaM sthAvaraM liMgaM dvikhaMDaM carameva ca । yekurvantinarAmUDhAnapUjAphalabhAginaH 34 ।
Those who make a stationary phallic image as a single whole and a mobile one pieced are fools. They never reap the benefit of worship.

तस्माच्छास्त्रोक्तविधिना अखंडं चरसंज्ञकम् । द्विखंडं स्थावरं लिंगं कर्तव्यं परया मुदा ३५ ।
tasmAcchAstroktavidhinA akhaMDaM carasaMjJakam । dvikhaMDaM sthAvaraM liMgaM kartavyaM parayA mudA 35 ।
Hence, one shall make with very great pleasure the mobile one as a single whole and the stationary one as two-pieced according to rules laid down in the sacred texts.

अखंडे तु चरे पूजा सम्पूर्णफलदायिनी । द्विखंडे तु चरे पूजामहाहानिप्रदा स्मृता ३६ ।
akhaMDe tu care pUjA sampUrNaphaladAyinI । dvikhaMDe tu care pUjAmahAhAnipradA smRtA 36 ।
The worship of an unbroken mobile image yields full benefit while the worship of two-pieced mobile image brings about great harm.

अखंडे स्थावरे पूजा न कामफलदायिनी । प्रत्यवायकरी नित्यमित्युक्तं शास्त्रवेदिभिः ३७ ।
akhaMDe sthAvare pUjA na kAmaphaladAyinI । pratyavAyakarI nityamityuktaM zAstravedibhiH 37 ।
This has been stated by those who know the lore that the worship of a stationary image of a single piece not only withholds the cherished desire but is also full of hazards.
