RSayaH UcuH । baMdhamokSasvarUpaM hi brUhi sarvArthavittama । sUta uvAca । baMdhamokSaM tathopAyaM vakSye'haM zRNutAdarAt 1 ।
The sages said: O foremost among those who know everything, please explain the nature of bondage and liberation. Sūta said: I shall explain bondage, liberation and the means of liberation. Please listen attentively.

prakRtyAdyaSTabaMdhena baddho jIvaH sa ucyate । prakRtyAdyaSTabaMdhena nirmukto mukta ucyate 2 ।
A Jīva is said to be in bondage if he is tied up by the noose of eightfold primary essences, Prakṛti etc. When freed from them he is called liberated.

prakRtyAdivazIkAro mokSa ityucyate svataH । baddhajIvastu nirmukto muktajIvaH sa kathyate 3 ।
Perfect control and subjugation of Prakṛti and its offshoots is Salvation. A Jīva in bondage when freed from it is called a liberated soul.

prakRtyagre tato buddhirahaMkAro guNAtmakaH । paMcatanmAtramityete prakRtyAdyaSTakaM viduH 4 ।
The set of eight that binds is:—Prakṛti, Buddhi (cosmic intellect), Ahaṃkāra (cosmic ego) of the nature of attributes, and the five Tanmātrās (cosmic principles of Ether etc.)

prakRTyAdyaSTajo deho dehajaM karma ucyate । punazca karmajo deho janmakarma punaH punaH 5 ।
The body is evolved out of these eight. The body carries on activities. The activities generate the body. Thus birth and activities continue in a series.

शरीरं त्रिविधं ज्ञेयं स्थूलं सूक्ष्मं च कारणम् । स्थूलं व्यापारदं प्रोक्तं सूक्ष्ममिंद्रि यभोगदम् ६ ।
zarIraM trividhaM jJeyaM sthUlaM sUkSmaM ca kAraNam । sthUlaM vyApAradaM proktaM sUkSmamiMdri yabhogadam 6 ।
The body is of three types: the gross, the subtle and the causal. The gross body is responsible for all activities; the subtle body yields the enjoyment of pleasures through the senses.

kAraNaM tvAtmabhogArthaM jIvakarmAnurUpataH । sukhaM duHkhaM puNyapApaiH karmabhiH phalamaznute 7 ।
The causal body is for the sake of experiencing the good and bad results of the activities of the Jiva. The Jīva experiences happiness as a result of virtue and misery as a result of sin.

तस्माद्धि कर्मरज्ज्वा हि बद्धो जीवः पुनः पुनः । शरीरत्रयकर्मभ्यां चक्रवद्भ्राम्यते सदा ८ ।
tasmAddhi karmarajjvA hi baddho jIvaH punaH punaH । zarIratrayakarmabhyAM cakravadbhrAmyate sadA 8 ।
The Jīva bound by the rope of activities revolves round and round for ever like a wheel by means of the three types of body and their activities.

चक्रभ्रमनिवृत्यर्थं चक्रकर्तारमीडयेत् । प्रकृत्यादि महाचक्रं प्रकृतेः परतः शिवः ९ ।
cakrabhramanivRtyarthaM cakrakartAramIDayet । prakRtyAdi mahAcakraM prakRteH parataH zivaH 9 ।
The creator of the wheel must be worshipped for the cessation of the revolution of the wheel. The Prakṛti etc. constitute the great wheel and Śiva is beyond the Prakṛti.

चक्रकर्ता महेशो हि प्रकृतेः परतोयतः । पिबति वाथ वमति जीवन्बालो जलं यथा 1-18-१० ।
cakrakartA mahezo hi prakRteH paratoyataH । pibati vAtha vamati jIvanbAlo jalaM yathA 1-18-10 ।
The creator of the wheel is the Lord Śiva. He is beyond the Prakṛti. Just as a boy drinks or spits out water as he pleases so also Śiva keeps Prakṛti etc. just as he pleases.

शिवस्तथा प्रकृत्यादि वशीकृत्याधितिष्ठति । सर्वं वशीकृतं यस्मात्तस्माच्छिव इति स्मृतः । शिव एव हि सर्वज्ञः परिपूर्णश्च निःस्पृहः ११।
zivastathA prakRtyAdi vazIkRtyAdhitiSThati । sarvaM vazIkRtaM yasmAttasmAcchiva iti smRtaH । ziva eva hi sarvajJaH paripUrNazca niHspRhaH 11।
He is called Śiva because he has brought it under his control. (Vaīśkṛta). Śiva alone is omniscient, perfect and free from desire.

सर्वज्ञता तृप्तिरनादिबोधः स्वतंत्रता नित्यमलुप्तशक्तिः । अनंतशक्तिश्च महेश्वरस्य यन्मानसैश्वर्यमवैति वेदः १२ ।
sarvajJatA tRptiranAdibodhaH svataMtratA nityamaluptazaktiH । anaMtazaktizca mahezvarasya yanmAnasaizvaryamavaiti vedaH 12 ।
The mental prowess of Maheśvara which Vedas alone can comprehend consists of omniscience, satiety, beginningless understanding, independence, never failing and and infinite power.

अतः शिवप्रसादेन प्रकृत्यादिवशं भवेत् । शिवप्रसादलाभार्थं शिवमेव प्रपूजयेत् १३ ।
ataH zivaprasAdena prakRtyAdivazaM bhavet । zivaprasAdalAbhArthaM zivameva prapUjayet 13 ।
Hence Prakṛti etc. come under control due to Śiva’s grace. One shall worship Śiva alone for the acquisition of Śiva’s grace.

निःस्पृहस्य च पूर्णस्य तस्य पूजा कथं भवेत् । शिवोद्देशकृतं कर्म प्रसादजनकं भवेत् १४ ।
niHspRhasya ca pUrNasya tasya pUjA kathaM bhavet । zivoddezakRtaM karma prasAdajanakaM bhavet 14 ।
If one were to ask “How can there be a self-less worship of a perfect being?” the answer is “An activity done with dedication to Śiva shall cause pleasure to him”.

लिंगे बेरे भक्तजने शिवमुद्दिश्य पूजयेत् । कायेन मनसा वाचा धनेनापि प्रपूजयेत् १५ ।
liMge bere bhaktajane zivamuddizya pUjayet । kAyena manasA vAcA dhanenApi prapUjayet 15 ।
Keeping Śiva in view the devotee shall worship the phallic or the embodied image of Śiva, or his devotee. He shall worship his devotee by means of the body, mind, speech and money spent.

पुजया तु महेशो हि प्रकृतेः परमः शिवः । प्रसादं कुरुते सत्यं पूजकस्य विशेषतः १६ ।
pujayA tu mahezo hi prakRteH paramaH zivaH । prasAdaM kurute satyaM pUjakasya vizeSataH 16 ।
Śiva, the great lord, who is beyond Prakṛti is delighted at the worship and specially blesses the worshipper.

शिवप्रसादात्कर्माद्यं क्रमेण स्ववशं भवेत् । कर्मारभ्य प्रकृत्यंतं यदासर्वं वशं भवेत् १७ ।
zivaprasAdAtkarmAdyaM krameNa svavazaM bhavet । karmArabhya prakRtyaMtaM yadAsarvaM vazaM bhavet 17 ।
The Karma etc. come under control gradually due to Śiva’s grace. Beginning with Karma and ending with Prakṛti when everything comes under control, the Jīva is called liberated and he shines as a self-realised person.

तदामुक्त इति प्रोक्तः स्वात्मारामो विराजते । प्रसादात्परमेशस्य कर्म देहो यदावशः १८ ।
tadAmukta iti proktaH svAtmArAmo virAjate । prasAdAtparamezasya karma deho yadAvazaH 18 ।
By the grace of Śiva, when this body which is resultant from activities (Karmadeha) comes under control, the devotee attains residence in Śivaloka.

तदा वै शिवलोके तु वासः सालोक्यमुच्यते । सामीप्यं याति सांबस्य तन्मात्रे च वशं गते १९ ।
tadA vai zivaloke tu vAsaH sAlokyamucyate । sAmIpyaM yAti sAMbasya tanmAtre ca vazaM gate 19 ।
This is called Sālokya form of liberation. When the subtle elements come under control, the devotee attains nearness to Śiva.

तदा तु शिवसायुज्यमायुधाद्यैः क्रियादिभिः । महाप्रसादलाभे च बुद्धिश्चापि वशा भवेत् 1-18-२० ।
tadA tu zivasAyujyamAyudhAdyaiH kriyAdibhiH । mahAprasAdalAbhe ca buddhizcApi vazA bhavet 1-18-20 ।
Then he attains similarity with Śiva by means of weapons and activities. This is called Sārūpya. When the devotee acquires the great favour, the cosmic intellect too comes under control.

बुद्धिस्तु कार्यं प्रकृतेस्तत्सृष्टिरिति कथ्यते । पुनर्महाप्रसादेन प्रकृतिर्वशमेष्यति २१ ।
buddhistu kAryaM prakRtestatsRSTiriti kathyate । punarmahAprasAdena prakRtirvazameSyati 21 ।
The cosmic intellect is only an effect of the Prakṛti. The control of Intellect is called Sārṣṭī—a form of liberation wherein the devotee has the same rank and power as Śiva. Then due to a further great favour of Śiva, the Prakṛti comes under control.

शिवस्य मानसैश्वर्यं तदाऽयत्नं भविष्यति । सार्वज्ञाद्यं शिवैश्वर्यं लब्ध्वा स्वात्मनि राजते २२ ।
zivasya mAnasaizvaryaM tadA'yatnaM bhaviSyati । sArvajJAdyaM zivaizvaryaM labdhvA svAtmani rAjate 22 ।
The mental prowess of Śiva becomes his without any difficulty. On acquiring the omniscience and prosperity of Śiva, the devotee becomes resplendent in his soul.

तत्सायुज्यमिति प्राहुर्वेदागमपरायणाः । एवं क्रमेण मुक्तिः स्याल्लिंगादौ पूजया स्वतः २३ ।
tatsAyujyamiti prAhurvedAgamaparAyaNAH । evaM krameNa muktiH syAlliMgAdau pUjayA svataH 23 ।
This is called Sāyujya (complete identity) by persons well-versed in the Vedas and Āgamas (Traditional Sacred Texts). It is in this order that one gets salvation by the worship of the phallic image of Śiva.

अतः शिवप्रसादार्थं क्रियाद्यैः पूजयेच्छिवम् । शिवक्रिया शिवतपः शिवमंत्रजपः सदा २४ ।
ataH zivaprasAdArthaM kriyAdyaiH pUjayecchivam । zivakriyA zivatapaH zivamaMtrajapaH sadA 24 ।
Hence the devotee shall worship Śiva by performing sacred rites etc. for the acquisition of Śiva’s favour. Śiva’s sacred rites, Śiva’s penance, and the Japas of Śiva mantras always.

शिवज्ञानं शिवध्यानमुत्तरोत्तरमभ्यसेत् । आसुप्तेरामृतेः कालं नयेद्वै शिवचिंतया २५ ।
zivajJAnaM zivadhyAnamuttarottaramabhyaset । AsupterAmRteH kAlaM nayedvai zivaciMtayA 25 ।
Knowledge of Śiva and meditation on Him shall be practised more and more. The time till retirement to bed, the time till death shall be spent in contemplating over Śiva.

सद्यादिभिश्च कुसुमैरर्चयेच्छिवमेष्यति । ऋषय ऊचुः । लिंगादौ शिवपूजाया विधानं ब्रूहि सर्वतः २६ ।
sadyAdibhizca kusumairarcayecchivameSyati । RSaya UcuH । liMgAdau zivapUjAyA vidhAnaM brUhi sarvataH 26 ।
One should immediately worship Shiva with fresh flowers and he will certainly be blessed. The Rishis said: O Sage, tell us the procedure for the worship of Shiva in the form of the Lingam, in all respects.

सूत उवाच । लिंगानां च क्रमं वक्ष्ये यथावच्छृणुत द्विजाः । तदेव लिंगं प्रथमं प्रणवं सार्वकामिकम् २७ ।
sUta uvAca । liMgAnAM ca kramaM vakSye yathAvacchRNuta dvijAH । tadeva liMgaM prathamaM praNavaM sArvakAmikam 27 ।
Sūta said: I shall explain, O brahmins, the procedure of the worship of the phallic form, please listen. The first phallic form is the Praṇava that confers all desires.

सूक्ष्मप्रणवरूपं हि सूक्ष्मरूपं तु निष्फलम् । स्थूललिंगं हि सकलं तत्पंचाक्षरमुच्यते २८ ।
sUkSmapraNavarUpaM hi sUkSmarUpaM tu niSphalam । sthUlaliMgaM hi sakalaM tatpaMcAkSaramucyate 28 ।
It is called Sūkṣma Praṇava (the subtle one) if it is Niṣkala. The Sthūla (gross one) is Sakala and it consists of five constituent syllables.

तयोः पूजा तपः प्रोक्तं साक्षान्मोक्षप्रदे उभे । पौरुषप्रकृतिभूतानि लिंगानिसुबहूनि च २९ ।
tayoH pUjA tapaH proktaM sAkSAnmokSaprade ubhe । pauruSaprakRtibhUtAni liMgAnisubahUni ca 29 ।
The worship of these two is called a penance. Both of them accord salvation. There are many phallic emblems of Pauruṣa Prakṛti.

तानि विस्तरतो वक्तुं शिवो वेत्ति न चापरः । भूविकाराणि लिंगानि ज्ञातानि प्रब्रवीमि वः 1-18-३० ।
tAni vistarato vaktuM zivo vetti na cAparaH । bhUvikArANi liMgAni jJAtAni prabravImi vaH 1-18-30 ।
Śiva alone can explain them in detail. No one else. Such as are evolved of Earthly material are known to me which I shall explain to you all.

स्वयं भूलिंगं प्रथमं बिंदुलिंगंद्वितीयकम् । प्रतिष्ठितं चरंचैव गुरुलिंगं तु पंचमम् ३१ ।
svayaM bhUliMgaM prathamaM biMduliMgaMdvitIyakam । pratiSThitaM caraMcaiva guruliMgaM tu paMcamam 31 ।
These are of five types: (1) Svayambhū, (2) Bindu, (3) Pratiṣṭhita, (4) Cara, (5) Guru Liṇga.

देवर्षितपसा तुष्टः सान्निध्यार्थं तु तत्र वै । पृथिव्यन्तर्गतः शर्वो बीजं वै नादरूपतः ३२ ।
devarSitapasA tuSTaH sAnnidhyArthaM tu tatra vai । pRthivyantargataH zarvo bIjaM vai nAdarUpataH 32 ।
Pleased by the austerities of the Devarshis (the sages), Lord Shiva, desiring to be present there, entered the earth and assumed the form of the seed, which is in the form of sound (Nada).

स्थावरांकुरवद्भूमिमुद्भिद्य व्यक्त एव सः । स्वयंभूतं जातमिति स्वयंभूरिति तं विदुः ३३ ।
sthAvarAMkuravadbhUmimudbhidya vyakta eva saH । svayaMbhUtaM jAtamiti svayaMbhUriti taM viduH 33 ।
Just as a plant emerges from the earth, Lord Shiva, breaking through the firmament (the solid earth), manifests himself clearly. He is known as Svayambhu (self-manifested), the one who has been born of himself.

तल्लिंगपूजया ज्ञानं स्वयमेव प्रवर्द्धते । सुवर्णरजतादौ वा पृथिव्यां स्थिंडिलेपि वा ३४ ।
talliMgapUjayA jJAnaM svayameva pravarddhate । suvarNarajatAdau vA pRthivyAM sthiMDilepi vA 34 ।
Through the worship of that Lingam, knowledge itself is developed. Whether in gold, silver, or on the earth, or even on a stone, the Lingam can be worshiped.

स्वहस्ताल्लिखितं लिंगं शुद्धप्रणवमंत्रकम् । यंत्रलिंगं समालिख्य प्रतिष्ठावाहनं चरेत् ३५ ।
svahastAllikhitaM liMgaM zuddhapraNavamaMtrakam । yaMtraliMgaM samAlikhya pratiSThAvAhanaM caret 35 ।
The Lingam written with one's own hand, with the pure Pranava (Om) mantra, should be worshiped. One should draw the Yantra-Lingam and install it, and perform worship accordingly.

बिंदुनादमयं लिंगं स्थावरं जंगमं च यत् । भावनामयमेतद्धि शिवदृष्टं न संशयः ३६ ।
biMdunAdamayaM liMgaM sthAvaraM jaMgamaM ca yat । bhAvanAmayametaddhi zivadRSTaM na saMzayaH 36 ।
The Bindu and Nāda forms, the stationary or mobile ones are conceptual but belong to Śiva, undoubtedly.

यत्र विश्वस्य ते शंभुस्तत्र तस्मै फलप्रदः । स्वहस्ताल्लिख्यते यंत्रे स्थावरादावकृत्रिमे ३७ ।
yatra vizvasya te zaMbhustatra tasmai phalapradaH । svahastAllikhyate yaMtre sthAvarAdAvakRtrime 37 ।
Wherever Śiva is sincerely believed to be present, the lord bestows on the devotee the benefit through that alone.

आवाह्य पूजयेच्छंभुं षोडशैरुपचारकैः । स्वयमैश्वर्यमाप्नोति ज्ञानमभ्यासतो भवेत् ३८ ।
AvAhya pUjayecchaMbhuM SoDazairupacArakaiH । svayamaizvaryamApnoti jJAnamabhyAsato bhavet 38 ।
The devotee can invoke the lord in a natural immobile thing—a rock or a stump—or an engraved picture and worship Śiva by the sixteen Upacāras (services and homage). He will attain supreme power of the lord and by practice gain knowledge.

देवैश्च ऋषिभिश्चापि स्वात्मसिद्ध्यर्थमेव हि । समंत्रेणात्महस्तेन कृतं यच्छुद्धमंडले ३९ ।
devaizca RSibhizcApi svAtmasiddhyarthameva hi । samaMtreNAtmahastena kRtaM yacchuddhamaMDale 39 ।
It is performed with the mantra by the gods and sages, for the purpose of self-realization. It is done with a purified hand in the sacred circle.

त्रिपुंड्रं सजलं भस्म धृत्वा पूजां करोति यः । शिवपूजां फलं सांगं तस्यैव हि सुनिश्चितम् 1-18-८० ।
tripuMDraM sajalaM bhasma dhRtvA pUjAM karoti yaH । zivapUjAM phalaM sAMgaM tasyaiva hi sunizcitam 1-18-80 ।
He who has the Tripuṇḍra made of ashes with water and performs worship derives the entire benefit of the same, no one else.

Brahmins, as many in number as the number of offerings made, shall be fed, O scholarly sages, the preceptor and the presiding priest shall partake of sacrificial food alone.

As long as the body exists, the Jīva is dependent on activities and he is spoken of as being in bondage. But when the three forms of the physical body are under control it is called “Salvation” by the scholars.

व्यासेन यत्पुराप्रोक्तं यच्छ्रुतं हि मया पुरा । भद्र मस्तु हि वोऽस्माकं शिवभक्तिर्दृढाऽस्तुसा १६१ ।
vyAsena yatpurAproktaM yacchrutaM hi mayA purA । bhadra mastu hi vo'smAkaM zivabhaktirdRDhA'stusA 161 ।
What has been mentioned formerly by Vyāsa and what has been heard by me before, has been mentioned to you. Welfare attend ye all. May our devotion to Śiva be stable and firm.

य इमं पठतेऽध्यायं यः शृणोति नरः सदा । शिवज्ञानं स लभतेशिवस्य कृपया बुधाः १६२ ।
ya imaM paThate'dhyAyaM yaH zRNoti naraH sadA । zivajJAnaM sa labhatezivasya kRpayA budhAH 162 ।
O scholars, whoever reads this chapter by Siva’s grace and whoever listens to this always shall acquire the knowledge of Siva.
