RSaya UcuH । praNavasya ca mAhAtmyaM SaDliMgasya mahAmune । zivabhaktasya pUjAM ca kramazo brUhi naHprabho 1 ।
The sages said: O lord, tell us the greatness of the syllable Om and that of the six liṅgas, O great sage. Also please tell us the worship of the devotees of Śiva in order.

सूत उवाच । तपोधनैर्भवद्भिश्च सम्यक्प्रश्नस्त्वयं कृतः । अस्योत्तरं महादेवो जानाति स्म न चापरः २ ।
sUta uvAca । tapodhanairbhavadbhizca samyakpraznastvayaM kRtaH । asyottaraM mahAdevo jAnAti sma na cAparaH 2 ।
Sūta said: All of you, sages, have now requested for a good thing. Only Śiva can explain this properly. No one else.

athApi vakSye tamahaM zivasya kRpayaiva hi । zivo'smAkaM ca yuSmAkaM rakSAM gRhNAtu bhUrizaH 3 ।
Still I shall explain the same with Śiva’s grace. May Śiva increasingly guard us, you and every one else.

प्रो हि प्रकृतिजातस्य संसारस्य महोदधेः । नवं नावांतरमिति प्रणवं वै विदुर्बुधाः ४ ।
pro hi prakRtijAtasya saMsArasya mahodadheH । navaM nAvAMtaramiti praNavaM vai vidurbudhAH 4 ।
The syllable Om means an excellent boat to cross the ocean of worldly existence. ॥ Pra=of the Prakṛti i.e. the world evolved out of it. Navam—Nāvāṃ Varam—an excellent boat॥

प्रः प्रपंचो न नास्तिवो युष्माकं प्रणवं विदुः । प्रकर्षेण नयेद्यस्मान्मोक्षं वः प्रणवं विदुः ५ ।
praH prapaMco na nAstivo yuSmAkaM praNavaM viduH । prakarSeNa nayedyasmAnmokSaM vaH praNavaM viduH 5 ।
Or Praṇava may mean: “there is no world for you” or it may mean “That which leads to salvation”.

स्वजापकानां योगिनां स्वमंत्रपूजकस्य च । सर्वकर्मक्षयं कृत्वा दिव्यज्ञानं तु नूतनम् ६ ।
svajApakAnAM yoginAM svamaMtrapUjakasya ca । sarvakarmakSayaM kRtvA divyajJAnaM tu nUtanam 6 ।
For those who chant their own mantras and for those who perform their own worship, by destroying all actions, they attain new divine knowledge.

तमेव मायारहितं नूतनं परिचक्षते । प्रकर्षेण महात्मानं नवं शुद्धस्वरूपकम् ७ ।
tameva mAyArahitaM nUtanaM paricakSate । prakarSeNa mahAtmAnaM navaM zuddhasvarUpakam 7 ।
They call him the same (divine being), free from illusion, the new, who is of supreme greatness, the newly purified, of pure form.

नूतनं वै करोतीति प्रणवं तं विदुर्बुधाः । प्रणवं द्विविधं प्रोक्तं सूक्ष्मस्थूलविभेदतः ८ ।
nUtanaM vai karotIti praNavaM taM vidurbudhAH । praNavaM dvividhaM proktaM sUkSmasthUlavibhedataH 8 ।
The wise know that the Pranava (Om) is the new form, for it creates. The Pranava is said to be of two kinds: subtle and gross, distinguished by their forms.

सूक्ष्ममेकाक्षरं विद्यात्स्थूलं पंचाक्षरं विदुः । सूक्ष्ममव्यक्तपंचार्णं सुव्यक्तार्णं तथेतरत् ९ ।
sUkSmamekAkSaraM vidyAtsthUlaM paMcAkSaraM viduH । sUkSmamavyaktapaMcArNaM suvyaktArNaM tathetarat 9 ।
The subtle one is of a single syllable where the constituent five syllables are not differentiated clearly. The gross one is of five syllables where all the constituent syllables are manifest.

जीवन्मुक्तस्य सूक्ष्मं हि सर्वसारं हि तस्य हि । मंत्रेणार्थानुसंधानं स्वदेहविलयावधि 1-17-१० ।
jIvanmuktasya sUkSmaM hi sarvasAraM hi tasya hi । maMtreNArthAnusaMdhAnaM svadehavilayAvadhi 1-17-10 ।
The subtle one is for the liberated living soul (jīvanmukta). The need for the contemplation of the meaning through the mantra is only upto the destruction of the physical body.

स्वदेहेगलिते पूर्णं शिवं प्राप्नोति निश्चयः । केवलं मंत्रजापी तु योगं प्राप्नोति निश्चयः ११ ।
svadehegalite pUrNaM zivaM prApnoti nizcayaH । kevalaM maMtrajApI tu yogaM prApnoti nizcayaH 11 ।
When the body is destroyed he completely merges in Śiva undoubtedly. The mere repeater of the mantra attains the yogic communion with Śiva certainly.

षट्त्रिंशत्कोटिजापी तु निश्चयं योगमाप्नुयात् । सूक्ष्मं च द्विविधं ज्ञेयं ह्रस्वदीर्घविभेदतः १२ ।
SaTtriMzatkoTijApI tu nizcayaM yogamApnuyAt । sUkSmaM ca dvividhaM jJeyaM hrasvadIrghavibhedataH 12 ।
A person who repeats the mantra thirty-six crores of times certainly attains the yogic communion. The subtle Praṇava is again two-fold—the short, and the long.

अकारश्च उकारश्च मकारश्च ततः परम् । बिंदुनादयुतं तद्धि शब्दकालकलान्वितम् १३ ।
akArazca ukArazca makArazca tataH param । biMdunAdayutaM taddhi zabdakAlakalAnvitam 13 ।
The long one is present in the heart of the Yogins alone—separately in the form of “A” syllable, “U” syllable, “M” syllable, Bindu and Nāda.

दीर्घप्रणवमेवं हि योगिनामेव हृद्गतम् । मकारं तंत्रितत्त्वं हि ह्रस्वप्रणव उच्यते १४ ।
dIrghapraNavamevaM hi yoginAmeva hRdgatam । makAraM taMtritattvaM hi hrasvapraNava ucyate 14 ।
The long Pranava (Om) is indeed the one that resides in the heart of yogis. The 'M' sound (Makara) is the essence of the Tantric principle. The short Pranava is also called the 'Hrasva Pranava'.

शिवः शक्तिस्तयोरैक्यं मकारं तु त्रिकात्मकम् । ह्रस्वमेवं हि जाप्यं स्यात्सर्वपापक्षयैषिणाम् १५ ।
zivaH zaktistayoraikyaM makAraM tu trikAtmakam । hrasvamevaM hi jApyaM syAtsarvapApakSayaiSiNAm 15 ।
Śiva, Śakti and their union are indicated by “M” syllable ramified into three and this is called the short subtle Praṇava. The short Praṇava shall be recited and repeated by those who desire their all sins annihilated.

भूवायुकनकार्णोद्योःशब्दाद्याश्च तथा दश । आशान्वयेदशपुनः प्रवृत्ता इति कथ्यते १६ ।
bhUvAyukanakArNodyoHzabdAdyAzca tathA daza । AzAnvayedazapunaH pravRttA iti kathyate 16 ।
The five elements ether, air, fire, water and earth and their five subtle causes sound, touch, form, taste, and smell together activised in relation to achievement of desires are called Pravṛttas.

ह्रस्वमेव प्रवृत्तानां निवृत्तानां तु दीर्घकम् । व्याहृत्यादौ च मंत्रादौ कामं शब्दकलायुतम् १७ ।
hrasvameva pravRttAnAM nivRttAnAM tu dIrghakam । vyAhRtyAdau ca maMtrAdau kAmaM zabdakalAyutam 17 ।
The short subtle Praṇava is for those who desire the continuation of mundane existence and the long one is for those who are averse to the same.

वेदादौ च प्रयोज्यं स्याद्वंदने संध्ययोरपि । नवकौटिजपाञ्जप्त्वा संशुद्धः पुरुषो भवेत् १८ ।
vedAdau ca prayojyaM syAdvaMdane saMdhyayorapi । navakauTijapAJjaptvA saMzuddhaH puruSo bhavet 18 ।
The Praṇava is to be used in the beginning of the Vyāhṛtis, mantras, in the beginning of the Vedas, and during the prayer at dawn and at dusk along with Bindu and Nāda. If the devotee repeats it nine crores of times he becomes pure.

पुनश्च नवकोट्या तु पृथिवीजयमाप्नुयात् । पुनश्च नवकोट्या तु ह्यपांजयमवाप्नुयात् १९ ।
punazca navakoTyA tu pRthivIjayamApnuyAt । punazca navakoTyA tu hyapAMjayamavApnuyAt 19 ।
A further repetition for nine crores of times enables him to win over the Earth element. A further repetition for nine crores of times enables him to win over the water element.

पुनश्च नवकोट्या तु तेजसांजयमाप्नुयात् । पुनश्च नवकोट्या तु वायोर्जयमवाप्नुयात् । आकाशजयमाप्नोति नवकोटिजपेन वै 1-17-२०।
punazca navakoTyA tu tejasAMjayamApnuyAt । punazca navakoTyA tu vAyorjayamavApnuyAt । AkAzajayamApnoti navakoTijapena vai 1-17-20।
Similarly for each repetition of nine crores of times he is able to win over the elements of fire, wind and the ether.

गंधादीनांक्रमेणैवनवकोटिजपेणवै । अहंकारस्य च पुनर्नव कोटिजपेन वै २१ ।
gaMdhAdInAMkrameNaivanavakoTijapeNavai । ahaMkArasya ca punarnava koTijapena vai 21 ।
The attributes of “smell” etc. are to be similarly won over by successive repetitions of nine crores of times. The egotism is to be won over by another repetition of nine crores of times.

सहस्रमंत्रजप्तेन नित्यशुद्धो भवेत्पुमान् । ततः परं स्वसिद्ध्यर्थं जपो भवति हि द्विजाः २२ ।
sahasramaMtrajaptena nityazuddho bhavetpumAn । tataH paraM svasiddhyarthaM japo bhavati hi dvijAH 22 ।
By repeating it daily for a thousand times the devotee becomes perpetually pure. O brahmins, thereafter the repetition of the mantra is conducive to the achievement of desires.

एवमष्टोत्तरशतकोटिजप्तेन वै पुनः । प्रणवेन प्रबुद्धस्तु शुद्धयोगमवाप्नुयात् २३ ।
evamaSTottarazatakoTijaptena vai punaH । praNavena prabuddhastu zuddhayogamavApnuyAt 23 ।
A devotee who thus completes one hundered and eight crores of Japas of Praṇava (Om) and is thus fully enlightened shall master Śuddhayoga.

शुद्धयोगेन संयुक्तो जीवन्मुक्तो न संशयः । सदा जपन्सदाध्यायञ्छिवं प्रणवरूपिणम् २४ ।
zuddhayogena saMyukto jIvanmukto na saMzayaH । sadA japansadAdhyAyaJchivaM praNavarUpiNam 24 ।
A person who has thus mastered Śuddhayoga becomes certainly a liberated living soul. A Mahāyogin who performs Japas and meditations perpetually of Śiva in the form of Praṇava and maintains mystic trance, certainly becomes Śiva Himself.

समाधिस्थो महायोगीशिव एव न संशयः । ऋषिच्छंदोदेवतादि न्यस्य देहेपुनर्जपेत् २५ ।
samAdhistho mahAyogIziva eva na saMzayaH । RSicchaMdodevatAdi nyasya dehepunarjapet 25 ।
He must perform Japas after duly performing the Aṅganyāsa (ritualistic placing of the finger over the different parts of the body as prescribed) and invoke the sages concerned, the deities presiding over and the name of the metre in which the verse is composed.

प्रणवं मातृकायुक्तं देहे न्यस्य ऋषिर्भवेत् । दशमातृषडध्वादि सर्वं न्यासफलं लभेत् २६ ।
praNavaM mAtRkAyuktaM dehe nyasya RSirbhavet । dazamAtRSaDadhvAdi sarvaM nyAsaphalaM labhet 26 ।
The devotee who practises the Japa of Praṇava (Om) with due ritualistic placings of fingers on the parts of his body becomes a sage. He shall attain all the benefits of the ritualistic Nyāsa such as the blessings of ten mothers and the (attainment of) six pathways.

प्रवृत्तानां च मिश्राणां स्थूलप्रणवमिष्यते । क्रियातपोजपैर्युक्तास्त्रिविधाः शिवयोगिनः २७ ।
pravRttAnAM ca mizrANAM sthUlapraNavamiSyate । kriyAtapojapairyuktAstrividhAH zivayoginaH 27 ।
For those engaged in activities, the mixed forms of the pranava are considered. Those who are involved in actions, austerities, and prayers, the three types of Shiva yogis are said to be.

धनादिविभवैश्चैव कराद्यंगैर्नमादिभिः । क्रियया पूजया युक्तः क्रियायोगीति कथ्यते २८ ।
dhanAdivibhavaizcaiva karAdyaMgairnamAdibhiH । kriyayA pUjayA yuktaH kriyAyogIti kathyate 28 ।
A person who is engaged in actions, rituals, or worship with wealth or material resources, and who is dedicated to the practice of these through their hands, actions, and prayers, is referred to as a Kriyayogi.

पूजायुक्तश्च मितभुग्बाह्येंद्रि यजयान्वितः । परद्रो हादिरहितस्तपोयोगीति कथ्यते २९ ।
pUjAyuktazca mitabhugbAhyeMdri yajayAnvitaH । paradro hAdirahitastapoyogIti kathyate 29 ।
A person who is engaged in worship, moderate in their consumption, with controlled external senses, and free from the harm of others, is called a Tapoyogi.

एतैर्युक्तः सदा क्रुद्धः सर्वकामादिवर्जितः । सदा जपपरः शांतोजपयोगीति तं विदुः 1-17-३० ।
etairyuktaH sadA kruddhaH sarvakAmAdivarjitaH । sadA japaparaH zAMtojapayogIti taM viduH 1-17-30 ।
Japayogin is the one who is quiet, performs Japa always, is free from all sorts of desires and maintains all these observances mentioned before.

उपचारैः षोडशभिः पूजया शिवयोगिनाम् । सालोक्यादिक्रमेणैव शुद्धो मुक्तिं लभेन्नरः ३१ ।
upacAraiH SoDazabhiH pUjayA zivayoginAm । sAlokyAdikrameNaiva zuddho muktiM labhennaraH 31 ।
A pure man shall obtain liberation only step by step, beginning with Sālokya as a result of being purified by the worship of Śivayogins with sixteen services and homage.

जपयोगमथो वक्ष्ये गदतः शृणुत द्विजाः । तपःकर्तुर्जपः प्रोक्तो यज्जपन्परिमार्जते ३२ ।
japayogamatho vakSye gadataH zRNuta dvijAH । tapaHkarturjapaH prokto yajjapanparimArjate 32 ।
O brahmins, I shall now explain Japayoga, please listen. Even the person practising austerities shall perform Japas to purify himself.

शिवनाम नमःपूर्वं चतुर्थ्यां पंचतत्त्वकम् । स्थूलप्रणवरूपं हि शिवपंचाक्षरं द्विजाः ३३ ।
zivanAma namaHpUrvaM caturthyAM paMcatattvakam । sthUlapraNavarUpaM hi zivapaMcAkSaraM dvijAH 33 ।
O brahmins, the five-syllabled mantra of Śiva is the gross Praṇava. The name Śiva is used in the dative case with Namaḥ prefixed. (Namaḥ Śivāya—Homage to Śiva) It implies the five principles.

पंचाक्षरजपेनैव सर्वसिद्धिं लभेन्नरः । प्रणवेनादिसंयुक्तं सदा पंचाक्षरं जपेत् ३४ ।
paMcAkSarajapenaiva sarvasiddhiM labhennaraH । praNavenAdisaMyuktaM sadA paMcAkSaraM japet 34 ।
The Japa of the five-syllabled mantra shall always be performed along with Praṇava. A man can achieve everything by means of the Japa of the five-syllabled mantra.

गुरूपदेशं संगम्य सुखवासे सुभूतले । पूर्वपक्षे समारभ्य कृष्णभूतावधि द्विजाः ३५ ।
gurUpadezaM saMgamya sukhavAse subhUtale । pUrvapakSe samArabhya kRSNabhUtAvadhi dvijAH 35 ।
O brahmins, the devotee shall take instruction from his preceptor, sit comfortably on the ground cleaned well, and start the Japa. The practice shall start on the Caturdaśī day of the bright half and concluded on the Caturdaśī day of the dark half.

माघं भाद्रं विशिष्टं तु सर्वकालोत्तमोत्तमम् । एकवारं मिताशीतु वाग्यतो नियतेंद्रि यः ३६ ।
mAghaM bhAdraM viziSTaM tu sarvakAlottamottamam । ekavAraM mitAzItu vAgyato niyateMdri yaH 36 ।
The months of Māgha and Bhādrapada are the most auspicious of all occasions. During the days of Japa be shall take only a single meal during the day in limited quantities. He shall abstain from useless talk and curb all his sense organs.

स्वस्य राजपितृ-णां च शुश्रूषणं च नित्यशः । सहस्रजपमात्रेण भवेच्छुद्धोऽन्यथा ऋणी ३७ ।
svasya rAjapitR-NAM ca zuzrUSaNaM ca nityazaH । sahasrajapamAtreNa bhavecchuddho'nyathA RNI 37 ।
He shall uninterruptedly render service to his parents and the king, or any master whom he serves. By performing the Japa a thousand times, he shall be free from indebtedness, otherwise not.

पंचाक्षरं पंचलक्षं जपेच्छिवमनुस्मरन् । पद्मासनस्थं शिवदं गंगाचंद्र कलान्वितम् ३८ ।
paMcAkSaraM paMcalakSaM japecchivamanusmaran । padmAsanasthaM zivadaM gaMgAcaMdra kalAnvitam 38 ।
One should chant the Panchakshara mantra 5 lakh times, meditating on Lord Shiva, seated in Padmasana, adorned with the Ganga, the moon, and other divine symbols.

वामोरुस्थितशक्त्या च विराजं तं महागणैः । मृगटंकधरं देवं वरदाभयपाणिकम् ३९ ।
vAmorusthitazaktyA ca virAjaM taM mahAgaNaiH । mRgaTaMkadharaM devaM varadAbhayapANikam 39 ।
With the energy of the left side, He shines with the great Ganas (attendants of Lord Shiva). He is the deity holding a tiger skin, with a hand raised in blessing and protection (Varada and Abhaya mudras).

सदानुग्रहकर्त्तारं सदा शिवमनुस्मरन् । संपूज्य मनसा पूर्वं हृदिवासूर्यमंडले 1-17-४० ।
sadAnugrahakarttAraM sadA zivamanusmaran । saMpUjya manasA pUrvaM hRdivAsUryamaMDale 1-17-40 ।
By constantly remembering Shiva, the eternal bestower of grace, and mentally worshiping Him first, one should offer worship with the heart centered in the solar (Sūrya) mandala.

japetpaMcAkSarIM vidyAM prANmukhaH zuddhakarmakRt । prAtaH kRSNacaturdazyAM nityakarmasamApya ca 41 ।
One should chant the Pañcākṣarī mantra with devotion, facing the direction of the breath (prāṇamukha), after completing their daily duties. This should be done on the Krishna Chaturdashi (the fourteenth day of the dark fortnight) in the morning.

In a beautiful and pure place, with a controlled and pure mind, one should chant the Pañcākṣarī mantra (Om Namah Shivaya) a thousand or twelve hundred times.

For the sake of the worship he shall invite five great devotees of Śiva along with their wives. One of those shall be an excellent preceptor who shall be assigned the Sāmba form.

One who performs the Japa of the Panchakṣari mantra (the five-syllable mantra), facing the breath, with a purified mind and after performing all daily rituals, should chant the mantra during the Krishna Chaturdashi (the fourteenth day of the dark fortnight of the lunar month) in the morning, having completed the regular duties.

All the rites from the beginning to the end shall be performed according to the rules laid down in the scriptural code which the devotee follows. The ghee used shall be the one prepared from the milk of a tawny cow. He shall make ten, hundred or a thousand offerings or he shall bid the devotees of Śiva make the offerings.

कापिलेन घृतेनैव जुहुयात्स्वयमेव हि । कारयेच्छिवभक्तैर्वाप्यष्टोत्तरशतं बुधः ४७ ।
kApilena ghRtenaiva juhuyAtsvayameva hi । kArayecchivabhaktairvApyaSTottarazataM budhaH 47 ।
One should offer ghee (clarified butter) as an oblation with Kapila (a type of cow) ghee. By doing this, one performs the proper ritual according to the wisdom of a true devotee. Furthermore, a learned person (Buddha) should perform this offering, either with the help of devotees or by themselves, performing it a hundred and eight times (the auspicious number).

mukhAMtaM ca svasUtreNa kRtvA homaM samArabhet । dazaikaM vA zataikaM vA sahasraikamathApi vA 46 ।
One should perform the homa (sacrificial fire offering) by tying the sacred thread (yajnopavita) around the mouth and initiate the ritual. This should be done either for ten, one hundred, or even a thousand times, according to one's capacity.

teSAM patsiktatoyena svaziraH snAnamAcaret । SaTtriMzatkoTitIrtheSu sadyaH snAnaphalaM labhet 49 ।
The five devotees shall be duly worshipped; the householder shall take bath with the water wherewith the feet of the devotees shall be washed. He shall thereby reap the benefit of taking bath in 36 crores of holy rivers and tanks.

dazAMgamannaM teSAM vai dadyAdvaibhaktipUrvakam । parAbuddhyA guroH patnImIzAnAdikrameNa tu 1-17-50 ।
He shall make gifts of cooked rice and ten ancillary constituents with great piety. The preceptor’s wife must be considered as the great goddess (Parā.) The wives of the other devotees Īśāna and the rest shall be duly worshipped and honoured.

paramAnnena saMpUjya yathAvibhavavistaram । rudrA kSavastrapUrvaM ca vaTakApUpakairyutam 51 ।
By offering the supreme food, according to one's wealth and resources, along with the Rudra (sacred) chants and other offerings such as Vataka (fried dough) and Pūpaka (sweet offerings), one should perform the worship.

After performing the sacrificial offering (Bali-dāna), one should conduct a grand feast. Then, after praying to the Lord of the Gods (Deva-īśvara), one should complete the recitation of the mantra (Japa).

purazcaraNamevaM tu kRtvA mantrIbhavennaraH । punazca paMcalakSeNa sarvapApakSayo bhavet 53 ।
After the performance of Puraścaraṇa (repetition of the mantra followed by sacrifice), the householder becomes endowed with the efficacy of the mantra. If he completes another five hundred thousand Japas, all the sins will be wiped off.

atalAdi samArabhya satyalokAvadhikramAt । paMcalakSajapAttattallokaizvaryamavApnuyAt 54 ।
For every set of five hundred thousand Japas the householder shall be blessed with the riches and prosperity of the different Lokas beginning with Atala and ending with Satyaloka in order.

madhye mRtazcedbhogAMte bhUmau tajjApako bhavet । punazca paMcalakSeNa brahmasAmIpyamApnuyAt 55 ।
If the householder dies in the middle, he shall be reborn in the world after due enjoyment of pleasures in the other worlds. He shall then continue the Japa and derive the benefit of being near to Brahman.

punazca paMcalakSeNa sArUpyaizvaryamApnuyAt । Ahatya zatalakSeNa sAkSAdbrahmasamo bhavet 56 ।
After a repetition of five hundred thousand further Japas he derives the benefit of assimilation to Brahman. If ten million Japas are completed in all he shall become identical with Brahman.

kAryabrahmaNa evaM hi sAyujyaM pratipadya vai । yatheSTaM bhogamApnoti tadbrahmapralayAvadhi 57 ।
Thus attaining the absorption into Kāryabrahman (the action Brahman) he gains all such enjoyments as can be wished for till the time of final dissolution.

punaH kalpAMtare vRtte brahmaputraH sajAyate । punazca tapasA dIptaH kramAnmukto bhaviSyati 58 ।
In the Next Kalpa he will be born as Brahma’s son. Becoming illuminated with the penance he shall be ultimately liberated.

pRthvyAdikAryabhUtebhyo lokA vai nirmitAH kramAt । pAtAlAdi ca satyAMtaM brahmalokAzcaturdaza 59 ।
Fourteen worlds beginning with Pātāla and ending with Satya are evolved out of the five elements, such as the Earth etc. These are called Brahmā’s worlds.

By performing the ritual with the Lakṣmī of action (a form of auspicious effort), and after securing protection, one should remain firmly established. Above them, twenty-eight regions exist, which are sacred and pure.

In the pure world of Kailāsa, Rudra, the annihilator of the living beings, is stationed. Beyond that are the fifty-six worlds ending with Ahiṃsā region.

The action-lord who has screened everything is stationed in the city of Jñānakailāsa in the Ahiṃsā region.

tadaMte kAlacakraM hi kAlAtItastataH param । zivenAdhiSThitastatra kAlazcakrezvarAhvayaH 64 ।
At the end of the same is the wheel of Time and beyond the ken of Time there is the space called Kālātīta. There Kāla (God of death and Time) backed by Śiva and in the name of Cakreśvara, unites every one with Time.

mAhiSaM dharmamAsthAya sarvAnkAlena yuMjati । asatyazcAzucizcaiva hiMsA caivAtha nirghRNA 65 ।
n his activity he occupies Dharma in the form of a buffalo whose four legs are untruth, untidiness, violence and ruthlessness.

asatyAdicatuSpAdaH sarvAMzaH kAmarUpadhRk । nAstikyalakSmIrduHsaMgo vedabAhyadhvaniH sadA 66 ।
He can assume any form he wishes. He assumes the form of a great buffalo, is rich in Atheism, has evil association and utters sounds other than those of the Vedas.

krodhasaMgaH kRSNavarNo mahAmahiSaveSavAn । tAvanmahezvaraH proktastirodhAstAvadeva hi 67 ।
He has an active association with Anger. He is black in colour. He is called great lord (Maheśvara) to that extent. The ability to vanish is up to that extent.

tadarvAkkarmabhogo hi tadUrdhvaM jJAnabhogakam । tadarvAkkarmamAyA hi jJAnamAyA tadUrdhvakam 68 ।
Beneath that is the Karmabhoga enjoyment as a result of activity. Beyond that point is Jñānabhoga (enjoyment due to knowledge). Beneath that point is Karmamāyā and beyond that point is Jñānamāyā.

mA lakSmIH karmabhogo vai yAti mAyeti kathyate । mA lakSmIrjJAnabhogo vai yAti mAyeti kathyate 69 ।
Explanation of Karmamāyā—Mā means Lakṣmī i.e. Karmabhoga. Attainment of the same is Māyā. The word Mā is then interpreted as Jñānabhoga. Attainment of the same is Māyā.

तदूर्ध्वं नित्यभोगो हि तदर्वाण्नश्वरं विदुः । तदर्वाक्च तिरोधानं तदूर्ध्वं न तिरोधनम् 1-17-७० ।
tadUrdhvaM nityabhogo hi tadarvANnazvaraM viduH । tadarvAkca tirodhAnaM tadUrdhvaM na tirodhanam 1-17-70 ।
Beyond that point is Nityabhoga (perpetual enjoyment). Beneath that point is Naśvarabhoga (evanescent enjoyment). Beneath that is evanescence and beyond that there is freedom.

तदर्वाक्पाशबंधो हि तदूर्ध्वं न हि बंधनम् । तदर्वाक्परिवर्तंते काम्यकर्मानुसारिणः ७१ ।
tadarvAkpAzabaMdho hi tadUrdhvaM na hi baMdhanam । tadarvAkparivartaMte kAmyakarmAnusAriNaH 71 ।
The bondage of nooses is only beneath that point. There is no bondage beyond that. Those who perform actions with desire alone, hover beneath that point.

niSkAmakarmabhogastu tadUrdhvaM parikIrtitaH । tadarvAkparivartaMte biMdupUjAparAyaNAH 72 ।
The enjoyment of rites performed with no desire is said to be beyond that point. Those who are devoted to the worship of womb, hover beneath that.

tadUrdhvaM hi vrajaMtyeva niSkAmA liMgapUjakAH । tadarvAkparivartaMte zivAnyasurapUjakAH 73 ।
The worshippers of the phallic emblem who are unaffected by desire can go beyond that. Worshippers of deities other than Śiva, hover beneath that.

zivaikaniratA ye ca tadUrdhvaM saMprayAMti te । tadarvAgjIvakoTiH syAttadUrdhvaM parakoTikAH 74 ।
Those who are devoted to Śiva alone can go beyond that. Crores of Jīvas live beneath that point. There is a great fort-wall as it were above the same.

sAMsArikAstadarvAkca muktAH khalu tadUrdhvagAH । tadarvAkparivartaMte prAkRtadra vyapUjakAH 75 ।
Persons bound by worldly existence remain beneath that point and those who are liberated go beyond that. Those who worship the natural substances hover beneath that.

tadUrdhvaM hi vrajaMtyete pauruSadra vyapUjakAH । tadarvAkchaktiliMgaM tu zivaliMgaM tadUrdhvakam 76 ।
Those who worship the entity of Puruṣa go beyond that point. Śaktiliṅga is beneath that point but Śivaliṅga is beyond.

तदर्वागावृतं लिंगं तदूर्ध्वं हि निरावृति । तदर्वाक्कल्पितं लिंगं तदूर्ध्वं वै न कल्पितम् ७७ ।
tadarvAgAvRtaM liMgaM tadUrdhvaM hi nirAvRti । tadarvAkkalpitaM liMgaM tadUrdhvaM vai na kalpitam 77 ।
The unmanifest liṅga is beneath that point but the manifest one is beyond. The conceived liṅga is beneath and the unconceived one is beyond.

tadarvAgbAhyaliMgaM syAdaMtaraMgaM tadUrdhvakam । tadarvAkchaktilokA hi zataM vai dvAdazAdhikam 78 ।
The external liṅga is beneath that point and the internal one is beyond. The Śaktilokas numbering hundred and twelve are beneath that point.

तदर्वाग्बिंदुरूपं हि नादरूपं तदुत्तरम् । तदर्वाक्कर्मलोकस्तु तदूर्ध्वं ज्ञानलोककः ७९ ।
tadarvAgbiMdurUpaM hi nAdarUpaM taduttaram । tadarvAkkarmalokastu tadUrdhvaM jJAnalokakaH 79 ।
The Bindurūpa is beneath that point and Nādarūpa is beyond. The Karmaloka is beneath that point and Jñānaloka is beyond that.

By performing the actions related to Śiva (such as worship, rituals, etc.), one should cultivate knowledge of Śiva. Those who have experienced this knowledge, are undoubtedly liberated (Muktas), there is no doubt about it.

The Kālacakra consists of five wheels, one being over the other. Sight and delusion (Drṣṭi and Moha) constitute the Brahmacakra; Enjoyment and delusion (Bhoga and Moha) constitute the Viṣṇu Chakra.

. Anger and delusion (Kopa and Moha) constitute the Raudra Cakra, Revolution (Bhramaṇa) is Īśvaracakra. Knowledge and illusion (Jñāna and Moha) constitute the Śivacakra. Thus scholars have explained the five cakras.

Thus, by following the sequence (of spiritual practices), attaining the abode of Viṣṇu and achieving great power, and by following the same sequence, attaining the lordship of that realm and becoming a great soul.

The first Maṇḍapa is the abode of Mūlamāyā (primary delusion) and is very auspicious and stationed there itself. Beyond that is the sanctum sanctorum, the auspicious place of the phallic form of Śiva.

This knowledge has come down from the preceptors. I got it from Nandīśa. Beyond this, it must be inferred from it and it is actually experienced only by Śiva.

zivasya kRpayA sAkSAcchiva lokasya vaibhavam । vijJAtuM zakyate sarvairnAnyathetyAhurAstikAH 1-17-120 ।
The full grandeur and greatness of Śivaloka can be known by any one only out of the grace of Śiva and not otherwise, so say the faithfuls.

evaMkrameNamuktAH syurbrAhmaNA vai jiteMdri yaH । anyeSAM ca kramaM vakSye gadataH zRNutAdarAt 121 ।
It is thus that Brahmins of controlled sense-organs become liberated gradually. I shall tell you the process in some other cases. Please listen attentively.

gurUpadezAjjApyaM vai brAhmaNAnAM namo'takam । paMcAkSaraM paMcalakSamAyuSyaM prajapedvidhiH 122 ।
Brahmin women must take instruction from a preceptor and perform the Japa with Namaḥ at the end. They shall repeat the five-syllabled mantra five hundred thousand times for their longevity. That is the rule.

Again they must repeat it five hundred thousand times to wipe off womanhood. Becoming a man first, the liberation will be acquired gradually.

kSatriyaH paMcalakSeNa kSattratvamapaneSyati । punazca paMcalakSeNa kSattriyo brAhmaNo bhavet 124 ।
A Kṣatriya must repeat the mantra five hundred thousand times to remove Kṣatratva. A further repetition of five hundred thousand times enables him to become a brahmin.

maMtrasiddhirjapAccaiva kramAnmukto bhavainnaraH । vaizyastu paMcalakSeNa vaizyatvamapaneSyati 125 ।
After the mantrasiddhi he shall gradually become liberated. A Vaiśya dispels the Vaiśyatva by five hundred thousand japas.

Then he becomes a mantra-Kṣatriya by repeating it five hundred thousand times. He then dispels the Kṣatratva by five hundred thousand japas.

punazca paMcalakSeNa maMtrabrAhmaNa ucyate । zUdra zcaiva namaOMtena paMcaviMzatilakSataH 127 ।
He then becomes a mantrabrahmin by repeating the mantra five hundred thousand times. A Śūdra, repeating the mantra with Namaḥ at the end, for two million five hundred thousand times becomes a mantrabrahmin and so pure enough for liberation.

maMtravipratvamApadya pazcAcchuddho bhaveddvijaH । nArIvAtha naro vAtha brAhmaNo vAnya eva vA 128 ।
Having attained the status of a mantra-brāhmaṇa through the chanting of mantras, one becomes pure and is then considered a dvija (twice-born). Whether one is a woman, a man, or a brāhmaṇa, it applies to anyone.

namontaM vA namaHpUrvamAturaH sarvadA japet । tataH strINAM tathaivohyagururnirdarzayetkramAt 129 ।
If one is sick, whether man or woman, of brahmin caste or otherwise, one must repeat it always with Namaḥ in the beginning or at the end. As for the women, the preceptor shall instruct them in proper order.

At the end of every five hundred thousand Japas, the aspirant shall perform Mahābhiṣeka and Naivedya. He shall worship devotees of Śiva for gratifying Śiva.

pUjayA zivabhaktasya zivaH prItataro bhavet । zivasya zivabhaktasya bhedo nAsti zivo hi saH 131 ।
Śiva becomes delighted at the worship of the devotee. There is no difference between Śiva and the devotee of Śiva. He is Śiva Himself.

The mantra is of the nature of Śiva. By holding the mantra the physical body of the devotee becomes identified with Śiva.

zivabhaktAH kriyAH sarvA vedasarvakriyAM viduH । yAvadyAvacchivaM maMtraM yena japtaM bhavetkramAt 133 ।
Devotees of Śiva know all the rites, nay all the Vedic rites. The more an aspirant repeats the mantra of Śiva, the greater is the presence of Śiva in his body.

tAvadvai zivasAnnidhyaM tasmindehe na saMzayaH । devIliMgaM bhavedrU paM zivabhaktastriyAstathA 134 ।
For the woman devotee of Śiva, the symbol of the goddess shall be the form for concentration.

यावन्मंत्रं जपेद्देव्यास्तावत्सान्निध्यमस्ति हि । शिवं संपूजयेद्धीमान्स्वयं वै शब्दरूपभाक् १३५ ।
yAvanmaMtraM japeddevyAstAvatsAnnidhyamasti hi । zivaM saMpUjayeddhImAnsvayaM vai zabdarUpabhAk 135 ।
The presence of the goddess continues to be felt as long as the mantra continues to be repeated. An intelligent man who continues to worship Śiva becomes worthy of the name and form.

स्वयं चैव शिवो भूत्वा परां शक्तिं प्रपूजयेत् । शक्तिं बेरं च लिंगं च ह्यालेख्या मायया यजेत् १३६ ।
svayaM caiva zivo bhUtvA parAM zaktiM prapUjayet । zaktiM beraM ca liMgaM ca hyAlekhyA mAyayA yajet 136 ।
Even when the aspirant has become Śiva he shall worship the Parā. He shall worship Śakti, the embodied and the phallic form of Śiva after faultlessly making images of the same.

शिवलिंगं शिवं मत्वा स्वात्मानं शक्तिरूपकम् । शक्तिलिंगं च देवीं च मत्वा स्वं शिवरूपकम् १३७ ।
zivaliMgaM zivaM matvA svAtmAnaM zaktirUpakam । zaktiliMgaM ca devIM ca matvA svaM zivarUpakam 137 ।
One should regard the Shiva Lingam as Shiva itself and perceive one's own soul as the embodiment of Shakti (divine power). Likewise, one should view the Shakti Lingam as the Goddess and recognize one's own self as Shiva.

शिवलिंगं नादरूपं बिंदुरूपं तु शक्तिकम् । उपप्रधानभावेन अन्योन्यासक्तलिंगकम् १३८ ।
zivaliMgaM nAdarUpaM biMdurUpaM tu zaktikam । upapradhAnabhAvena anyonyAsaktaliMgakam 138 ।
The Shiva Lingam is in the form of Nada (the sound), and it is also in the form of Bindu (the point or dot), representing Shakti (divine power). It exists in the form of a primary and secondary unity, being interconnected and mutually influencing the other.

pUjayecca zivaM zaktiM sa zivo mUlabhAvanAt । zivabhaktAJchivamaMtrarUpakAJchivarUpakAn 139 ।
One should worship Shiva and Shakti. Such worship is rooted in the fundamental nature of Shiva. The devotees of Shiva, who meditate on him, worship him in the form of Shiva Mantras and Shiva’s forms.

SoDazairupacAraizca pUjayediSTamApnuyAt । yena zuzrUSaNAdyaizca zivabhaktasya liMginaH 1-17-140 ।
By worshiping with sixteen rituals, one can attain the desired object. Through devotion and service to Shiva, the devotee of the Shiva Linga is blessed.

AnaMdaM janayedvidvAJchivaH prItataro bhavet । zivabhaktAnsapatnIkAnpatnyA saha sadaiva tat 141 ।
A learned person generates happiness and joy; Shiva becomes even more pleased. The devotees of Shiva, along with their wives, remain in eternal harmony, free from opposition.

pUjayedbhojanAdyaizca paMca vA daza vA zatam । dhane dehe ca maMtre ca bhAvanAyAmavaMcakaH 142 ।
One should worship with food offerings and the like, five, ten, or hundred times. However, one should not be deceitful in wealth, body, and mantras in their practice of devotion.

zivazaktisvarUpeNa na punarjAyate bhuvi । nAbheradho brahmabhAgamAkaMThaM viSNubhAgakam 143 ।
He will assume the form of Śiva and Śakti and will not be born again. Just below the umbilicus is the part of Brahmā, till the armpit is the part of Viṣṇu and the face is the phallus in the body of a devotee of Śiva.

mukhaM liMgamiti proktaM zivabhaktazarIrakam । mRtAndAhAdiyuktAnvA dAhAdirahitAnmRtAn 144 ।
It is said that the mouth is the linga (symbol of Shiva) and the body of a Shiva devotee. Whether the deceased is affected by burning or free from burning after death, they are still considered to have passed away.

One should worship Shiva, who is the ultimate origin, with the aim of honoring one's ancestors. After performing this worship, one should also worship the great mother and the devotees of Shiva.

By reaching the Pitrloka (the realm of ancestors) through proper rituals, the deceased is liberated. One who is engaged in spiritual practices and discipline, especially with tapas (austerities), is considered superior.

tapoyuktazatebhyazca japayukto viziSyate । japayuktasahasrebhyaH zivajJAnI viziSyate 147 ।
Among those who engage in austerities (tapas), one who practices mantra repetition (japa) is considered superior. Among those who engage in japa (mantra repetition) for a thousand repetitions, the one who possesses knowledge of Shiva (Shivajñāna) is considered the most superior.

zivajJAniSu lakSeSu dhyAnayukto viziSyate । dhyAnayukteSu koTibhyaH samAdhistho viziSyate 148 ।
Among the hundreds of people who possess knowledge of Shiva, the one who is meditative (Dhyanayukta) is considered superior. Among those who are meditative, the one who is in deep meditation (Samadhisthita) is considered the most superior.

uttarottara vai ziSTyAtpUjAyAmuttarottaram । phalaM vaiziSTyarUpaM ca durvijJeyaM manISibhiH 149 ।
With progressive excellence in worship, the fruits (rewards) of the worship become progressively greater, in the form of special qualities that are difficult to comprehend even by the most wise philosophers.

Who indeed knows the greatness of the devotee of Shiva, who worships Shiva and His power? Worship of Shiva and His energy is indeed the worship of the devotee of Shiva.

kurute yo naro bhaktyA sa zivaH zivamedhate । ya imaM paThate'dhyAyamarthavadvedasaMmatam 151 ।
He who performs the worship of Shiva with devotion, is indeed Shiva himself and attains the essence of Shiva. Likewise, whoever reads this sacred chapter, which is in alignment with the meaning of the scriptures and the Vedas, will be blessed.

zivajJAnI bhavedvipraH zivena saha modate । zrAvayecchivabhaktAMzca vizeSajJo manIzvarAH 152 ।
The learned priest who is a knower of Shiva enjoys the bliss with Shiva. He who teaches and inspires the devotees of Shiva, he is an expert and wise in the ways of the mind.
