RSaya UcuH । agniyajJaM devayajktaM brahmayajktaM tathaiva ca । gurupUjAM brahmatRptiM krameNa brUhi naH prabho 1 ।
The sages said: O lord, please tell us in order in detail all these rites viz. the fire sacrifice, the sacrifice to gods, Brahmayajña, the worship of the preceptor and the gratification of brahmins.

सूत उवाच । अग्नौ जुहोति यद्द्रव्यमग्नियज्ञः स उच्यते । ब्रह्मचर्याश्रमस्थानां समिदाधानमेव हि २ ।
sUta uvAca । agnau juhoti yaddravyamagniyajJaH sa ucyate । brahmacaryAzramasthAnAM samidAdhAnameva hi 2 ।
Suta said: That which is offered in the fire is called the Agni Yajna (fire sacrifice). The act of offering the sacrificial wood (Samidha) is specifically meant for those in the Brahmacharya Ashrama (student stage).

समिदग्रौ व्रताद्यं च विशेषयजनादिकम् । प्रथमाश्रमिणामेवं यावदौपासनं द्विजाः ३ ।
samidagrau vratAdyaM ca vizeSayajanAdikam । prathamAzramiNAmevaM yAvadaupAsanaM dvijAH 3 ।
The offering of sacrificial wood (Samidha) and the performance of vows and special sacrifices are the practices of those in the first Ashrama. This is how the Brahmanas (dvijas) perform their worship and rituals during this stage.

आत्मन्यारोपिताग्नीनां वनिनां यतिनां द्विजाः । हितं च मितमेध्यान्नं स्वकाले भोजनं हुतिः ४ ।
AtmanyAropitAgnInAM vaninAM yatinAM dvijAH । hitaM ca mitamedhyAnnaM svakAle bhojanaM hutiH 4 ।
O brahmins, in the case of ascetics and forest-dwellers who have consigned the sacred fire to the Ātman, taking a restricted quantity of wholesome food is itself the sacrificial offering.

औपासनाग्निसंधानं समारभ्य सुरक्षितम् । कुंडे वाप्यथ भांडे वा तदजस्रं समीरितम् ५ ।
aupAsanAgnisaMdhAnaM samArabhya surakSitam । kuMDe vApyatha bhAMDe vA tadajasraM samIritam 5 ।
Householders who have started their Aupāsana rite shall maintain the rite in the sacrificial fire kept in a vessel or pit always.

अग्निमात्मन्यरण्यां वा राजदैववशाद्ध्रुवम् । अग्नित्यागभयादुक्तं समारोपितमुच्यते ६ ।
agnimAtmanyaraNyAM vA rAjadaivavazAddhruvam । agnityAgabhayAduktaM samAropitamucyate 6 ।
The sacrificial fire shall be maintained either in the Ātman or in the Araṇī (the sacrificial churning twig from which fire is kindled) lest the fire should be extinguished by royal or divine intercession.

संपत्करी तथा ज्ञेया सायमग्न्याहुतिर्द्विजाः । आयुष्करीति विज्ञेया प्रातः सूर्याहुतिस्तथा ७ ।
saMpatkarI tathA jJeyA sAyamagnyAhutirdvijAH । AyuSkarIti vijJeyA prAtaH sUryAhutistathA 7 ।
O brahmins, the offering in the fire in the evening for the fire-god is the bestower of prosperity. The offering in the morning for the sun-god is conducive to longevity.

अग्नियज्ञो ह्ययं प्रोक्तो दिवा सूर्यनिवेशनात् । इंद्रा दीन्सकलान्देवानुद्दिश्याग्नौ जुहोतियत् ८ ।
agniyajJo hyayaM prokto divA sUryanivezanAt । iMdrA dInsakalAndevAnuddizyAgnau juhotiyat 8 ।
This Agni Yajna is said to be performed during the day, as it is associated with the placement of the Sun. Offering in the fire is made to the gods, specifically Indra, who is invoked for the welfare of all the divine beings and their well-being.

देवयज्ञं हि तं विद्यात्स्थालीपाकादिकान्क्रतून् । चौलादिकं तथा ज्ञेयं लौकिकाग्नौ प्रतिष्ठितम् ९ ।
devayajJaM hi taM vidyAtsthAlIpAkAdikAnkratUn । caulAdikaM tathA jJeyaM laukikAgnau pratiSThitam 9 ।
The different sacrifices Sthālīpāka etc. for the propitiation of Indra and other gods by offerings in the fire are called Devayajña. The rites of Caula (ceremony of tonsure) etc. are performed in the ordinary fire.

ब्रह्मयज्ञं द्विजः कुर्याद्देवानां तृप्तये सकृत् । ब्रह्मयज्ञ इति प्रोक्तो वेदस्याऽध्ययनं भवेत् 1-14-१० ।
brahmayajJaM dvijaH kuryAddevAnAM tRptaye sakRt । brahmayajJa iti prokto vedasyA'dhyayanaM bhavet 1-14-10 ।
. The regular study of the Vedas is called Brahmayajña. A brahmin shall perform this constantly for the propitiation of gods.

नित्यानंतरमासोयं ततस्तु न विधीयते । अनग्नौ देवयजनं शृणुत श्रद्धयादरात् ११ ।
nityAnaMtaramAsoyaM tatastu na vidhIyate । anagnau devayajanaM zRNuta zraddhayAdarAt 11 ।
This is to be practised by all and hence no special rules are prescribed here. Now attend to the explanation of certain Devayajñas without fire.

आदिसृष्टौ महादेवः सर्वज्ञः करुणाकरः । सर्वलोकोपकारार्थं वारान्कल्पितवान्प्रभुः १२ ।
AdisRSTau mahAdevaH sarvajJaH karuNAkaraH । sarvalokopakArArthaM vArAnkalpitavAnprabhuH 12 ।
At the beginning of the first creation, the omniscient, merciful lord Mahādeva created the different week days for the benefit of the entire world.

संसारवैद्यः सर्वज्ञः सर्वभेषजभेषजम् । आदावारोग्यदं वारं स्ववारं कृतवान्प्रभुः १३ ।
saMsAravaidyaH sarvajJaH sarvabheSajabheSajam । AdAvArogyadaM vAraM svavAraM kRtavAnprabhuH 13 ।
Lord Mahādeva, the global physician, the omniscient, the panacea of all panaceas, made the first day his own day that bestows good health.

संपत्कारं स्वमायाया वरं च कृतवांस्ततः । जनने दुर्गतिक्रांते कुमारस्य ततः परम् १४ ।
saMpatkAraM svamAyAyA varaM ca kRtavAMstataH । janane durgatikrAMte kumArasya tataH param 14 ।
Next he created the day of his Māyā (Illusion) the bestower of prosperity. Afterwards when the birth of Kumāra was attended with some mishaps he created the day for the sake of surmounting mishaps and idleness.

आलस्यदुरितक्रांत्यै वारं कल्पितवान्प्रभुः । रक्षकस्य तथा विष्णोर्लोकानां हितकाम्यया १५ ।
AlasyaduritakrAMtyai vAraM kalpitavAnprabhuH । rakSakasya tathA viSNorlokAnAM hitakAmyayA 15 ।
With a desire to bless the worlds and for their nurture and protection he created the next day dedicated to Viṣṇu, the protector of the worlds.

पुष्ट्यर्थं चैव रक्षार्थं वारं कल्पितवान्प्रभुः । आयुष्करं ततो वारमायुषां कर्तुरेव हि १६ ।
puSTyarthaM caiva rakSArthaM vAraM kalpitavAnprabhuH । AyuSkaraM tato vAramAyuSAM kartureva hi 16 ।
For the purpose of nourishment and protection, the Lord has ordained the boons. The boon that grants longevity is indeed given by the one who bestows it upon the lives of beings.

त्रैलोक्यसृष्टिकर्त्तुर्हि ब्रह्मणः परमेष्ठिनः । जगदायुष्यसिद्ध्यर्थं वारं कल्पितवान्प्रभुः १७ ।
trailokyasRSTikartturhi brahmaNaH parameSThinaH । jagadAyuSyasiddhyarthaM vAraM kalpitavAnprabhuH 17 ।
The next day created by the lord is for the sake of the longevity of the worlds dedicated to the creator of the three worlds, Brahmā, called also Parameṣṭhin, who is the bestower of longevity too. Hence this day too bestows longevity.

आदौ त्रैलोक्यवृद्ध्यर्थं पुण्यपापे प्रकल्पिते । तयोः कर्त्रोस्ततो वारमिंद्र स्य च यमस्य च १८ ।
Adau trailokyavRddhyarthaM puNyapApe prakalpite । tayoH kartrostato vAramiMdra sya ca yamasya ca 18 ।
The last two days of the week created by the lord are those of Indra and Yama. In the beginning when the lord created Puṇya and Pāpa (Virtue and Sin) for making the three worlds flourish, these deities who preside over them were assigned these two days.

भोगप्रदं मृत्युहरं लोकानां च प्रकल्पितम् । आदित्यादीन्स्वस्वरूपान्सुखदुःखस्य सूचकान् १९ ।
bhogapradaM mRtyuharaM lokAnAM ca prakalpitam । AdityAdInsvasvarUpAnsukhaduHkhasya sUcakAn 19 ।
The last two days are the bestowers of worldly enjoyments and removers of premature death respectively. The lord made the sun etc. who are His own manifestations and are firmly established in the solar cycle (Jyotiścakra the lords of the different days.

वारेशान्कल्पयित्वादौ ज्योतिश्चक्रेप्रतिष्ठितान् । स्वस्ववारे तु तेषां तु पूजा स्वस्वफलप्रदा 1-14-२० ।
vArezAnkalpayitvAdau jyotizcakrepratiSThitAn । svasvavAre tu teSAM tu pUjA svasvaphalapradA 1-14-20 ।
At the beginning, after ordaining the boons (Vara), the divine light (Jyoti) is established in the wheel (Chakra). During their specific Vara (day or period), the worship of the deities brings forth the fruits of their respective blessings.

आरोग्यं संपदश्चैव व्याधीनां शांतिरेव च । पुष्टिरायुस्तथा भोगो मृतेर्हानिर्यथाक्रमम् २१ ।
ArogyaM saMpadazcaiva vyAdhInAM zAMtireva ca । puSTirAyustathA bhogo mRterhAniryathAkramam 21 ।
Their worship in their respective days accords the respective benefits viz:—health, riches, removal of sickness, nourishment, longevity. enjoyment of pleasures and prevention of death respectively.

वारक्रमफलं प्राहुर्देवप्रीतिपुरःसरम् । अन्येषामपि देवानां पूजायाः फलदः शिवः २२ ।
vArakramaphalaM prAhurdevaprItipuraHsaram । anyeSAmapi devAnAM pUjAyAH phaladaH zivaH 22 ।
It is said that the respective merits of the different days are secured through the gratification of the gods. Śiva is the ultimate bestower of the fruits accruing from the worship of other gods as well.

देवानां प्रीतये पूजापंचधैव प्रकल्पिता । तत्तन्मंत्रजपो होमो दानं चैव तपस्तथा २३ ।
devAnAM prItaye pUjApaMcadhaiva prakalpitA । tattanmaMtrajapo homo dAnaM caiva tapastathA 23 ।
The worship for the propitiation of the deities is fivefold. 1. the repeated recitation of the respective mantras 2. sacrifice 3. charitable gift 4. austerities and 5. propitiation on the altar, idol, fire or a brahmin.

स्थंडिले प्रतिमायां च ह्यग्नौ ब्राह्मणविग्रहे । समाराधनमित्येवं षोडशैरुपचारकैः २४ ।
sthaMDile pratimAyAM ca hyagnau brAhmaNavigrahe । samArAdhanamityevaM SoDazairupacArakaiH 24 ।
The sixteen forms of service and homage shall be duly observed.

उत्तरोत्तरवैशिष्ट्यात्पूर्वाभावे तथोत्तरम् । नेत्रयोः शिरसो रोगे तथा कुष्ठस्य शांतये २५ ।
uttarottaravaiziSTyAtpUrvAbhAve tathottaram । netrayoH ziraso roge tathA kuSThasya zAMtaye 25 ।
Of the fivefold forms of worship the latter are more efficacious than the former. In the absence of the earlier ones the latter ones can be observed.

आदित्यं पूजयित्वा तु ब्राह्मणान्भोजयेत्ततः । दिनं मासं तथा वर्षं वर्षत्रयमथवापि वा २६ ।
AdityaM pUjayitvA tu brAhmaNAnbhojayettataH । dinaM mAsaM tathA varSaM varSatrayamathavApi vA 26 ।
In the ailments of the eyes or head or for quelling leprosy, the sun shall be worshipped and the brahmins fed for a day, a month, a year or three years.

प्रारब्धं प्रबलं चेत्स्यान्नश्येद्रो गजरादिकम् । जपाद्यमिष्टदेवस्य वारादीनां फलं विदुः २७ ।
prArabdhaM prabalaM cetsyAnnazyedro gajarAdikam । japAdyamiSTadevasya vArAdInAM phalaM viduH 27 ।
If the action meritorious or otherwise that has begun to fructify is sufficiently strong, the ailment, old age etc. are alleviated. The repetition of the mantras of the favourite deity accords the respective benefits of the day of the week.

पापशांतिर्विशेषेण ह्यादिवारे निवेदयेत् । आदित्यस्यैव देवानां ब्राह्मणानां विशिष्टदम् २८ ।
pApazAMtirvizeSeNa hyAdivAre nivedayet । Adityasyaiva devAnAM brAhmaNAnAM viziSTadam 28 ।
. The first day of the week dedicated to the sun has the special merit of the removal of sin, especially for brahmins.

सोमवारे च लक्ष्म्यादीन्संपदर्थं यजेद्बुधः । आज्यान्नेन तथा विप्रान्सपत्नीकांश्च भोजयेत् २९ ।
somavAre ca lakSmyAdInsaMpadarthaM yajedbudhaH । AjyAnnena tathA viprAnsapatnIkAMzca bhojayet 29 ।
For the sake of riches, the intelligent devotee shall worship Lakṣmī etc. on Monday with cooked rice soaked in ghee and shall feed brahmin couples.

काल्यादीन्भौम वारे तु यजेद्रो गप्रशांतये । माषमुद्गाढकान्नेन ब्रह्मणांश्चैव भोजयेत् 1-14-३० ।
kAlyAdInbhauma vAre tu yajedro gaprazAMtaye । mASamudgADhakAnnena brahmaNAMzcaiva bhojayet 1-14-30 ।
For alleviating ailments the devotee shall worship Kāli and others on Tuesday. He shall feed brahmins with an Āḍhaka (a measure) of cooked rice, the pulse, black gram and green gram.

सौम्यवारे तथा विष्णुं दध्यन्नेन यजेद्बुधः । पुत्रमित्रकलत्रादिपुष्टिर्भवति सर्वदा ३१ ।
saumyavAre tathA viSNuM dadhyannena yajedbudhaH । putramitrakalatrAdipuSTirbhavati sarvadA 31 ।
The scholarly devotee shall worship Viṣṇu with curd-rice on Wednesday. Sons, friends, womenfolk etc. will always be well-nourished for ever.

आयुष्कामो गुरोर्वारे देवानां पुष्टिसिद्धये । उपवीतेन वस्त्रेण क्षीराज्येन यजेद्बुधः ३२ ।
AyuSkAmo gurorvAre devAnAM puSTisiddhaye । upavItena vastreNa kSIrAjyena yajedbudhaH 32 ।
A person who seeks longevity shall worship the deities for their gratification, with sacred thread, cloth, milk and ghee on Thursday.

भोगार्थं भृगवारे तु यजेद्देवान्समाहितः । षड्रसोपेतमन्नं च दद्याद्ब्राह्मणतृप्तये ३३ ।
bhogArthaM bhRgavAre tu yajeddevAnsamAhitaH । SaDrasopetamannaM ca dadyAdbrAhmaNatRptaye 33 ।
On Friday, for the sake of enjoyment of worldly pleasures, the devotee shall worship devas with concentration. Brahmins should be propitiated with the cooked food consisting of six flavours.

स्त्रीणां च तृप्तये तद्वद्देयं वस्त्रादिकं शुभम् । अपमृत्युहरे मंदे रुद्रा द्री श्चं! यजेद्बुधः ३४ ।
strINAM ca tRptaye tadvaddeyaM vastrAdikaM zubham । apamRtyuhare maMde rudrA drI zcaM! yajedbudhaH 34 ।
For the satisfaction of women, one should offer gifts such as auspicious clothing and other items. The wise person (Buddha) should perform rituals to the Rudras and other deities to avert untimely death and attain protection from death.

तिलहोमेन दानेन तिलान्नेन च भोजयेत् । इत्थं यजेच्च विबुधानारोग्यादिफलं लभेत् ३५ ।
tilahomena dAnena tilAnnena ca bhojayet । itthaM yajecca vibudhAnArogyAdiphalaM labhet 35 ।
By performing a tilahoma (a ritual using sesame seeds) and by giving sesame seeds as charity, one should feed others with sesame as well. By performing these rites in this manner, one can obtain the results such as health and other blessings.

देवानां नित्ययजने विशेषयजनेपि च । स्नाने दाने जपे होमे ब्राह्मणानां च तर्पणे ३६ ।
devAnAM nityayajane vizeSayajanepi ca । snAne dAne jape home brAhmaNAnAM ca tarpaNe 36 ।
In the daily worship of the deities, and in special rituals, through bathing, giving charity, chanting, making offerings, and by performing the Tarpana (water offering) to the Brahmanas, one can attain the desired results.

तिलहोमेन दानेन तिलान्नेन च भोजयेत् । इत्थं यजेच्च विबुधानारोग्यादिफलं लभेत् ३५ ।
tilahomena dAnena tilAnnena ca bhojayet । itthaM yajecca vibudhAnArogyAdiphalaM labhet 35 ।
By performing the Tilahoma ritual and by giving sesame as charity, one should feed others with sesame-based food. By performing such worship, one obtains results such as health and other blessings.

तत्तद्रू पेण सर्वेषामारोग्यादिफलप्रदः । देशकालानुसारेण तथा पात्रानुसारतः ३८ ।
tattadrU peNa sarveSAmArogyAdiphalapradaH । dezakAlAnusAreNa tathA pAtrAnusArataH 38 ।
The specific tree or plant, depending on the occasion, is beneficial for all, granting results such as health and other blessings. This depends on the time, place, and the suitability of the recipient.

dra vyazraddhAnusAreNa tathA lokAnusArataH 39b। tAratamyakramAddevastvArogyAdInprayacchati 39 ।
The articles for worship shall be in accordance with one’s faith or local conventions. The lord bestows health etc. in accordance with the comparative quality of the same.

शुभादावशुभांते च जन्मर्क्षेषु गृहे गृही । आरोग्यादिसमृद्ध्यर्थमादित्यादीन्ग्रहान्यजेत् 1-14-४० ।
zubhAdAvazubhAMte ca janmarkSeSu gRhe gRhI । ArogyAdisamRddhyarthamAdityAdIngrahAnyajet 1-14-40 ।
In the beginning of the period of auspiciousness, the end of the period of inauspiciousness, on birth days (according to the stars) etc. the householder shall worship the planets, Sun etc. in his own house for his good health etc.

tasmAdvai devayajanaM sarvAbhISTaphalapradam । samaMtrakaM brAhmaNAnAmanyeSAM caiva tAMtrikam 41 ।
Hence the worship of gods bestows all desired fruits. The worship conducted by brahmins must be along with mantras and by means of gesticulations in the case of others.

यथाशक्त्यानुरूपेण कर्तव्यं सर्वदा नरैः । सप्तस्वपि च वारेषु नरैः शुभफलेप्सुभिः ४२ ।
yathAzaktyAnurUpeNa kartavyaM sarvadA naraiH । saptasvapi ca vAreSu naraiH zubhaphalepsubhiH 42 ।
The worship shall be carried out by men seeking good benefits in all the seven days in accordance with their capacity.

दरिद्र स्तपसा देवान्यजेदाढ्यो धनेन हि । पुनश्चैवंविधं धर्मं कुरुते श्रद्धया सह ४३ ।
daridra stapasA devAnyajedADhyo dhanena hi । punazcaivaMvidhaM dharmaM kurute zraddhayA saha 43 ।
Indigent men shall worship devas with austerities and rich men by spending money. Again and again they shall do virtuous actions with sufficient faith.

पुनश्च भोगान्विविधान्भुक्त्वा भूमौ प्रजायते । छायां जलाशयं ब्रह्मप्रतिष्ठां धर्मसंचयम् ४४ ।
punazca bhogAnvividhAnbhuktvA bhUmau prajAyate । chAyAM jalAzayaM brahmapratiSThAM dharmasaMcayam 44 ।
After enjoying the pleasures in heaven they are reborn again in the world. For better enjoyment the rich shall always plant trees for shade, dig tanks etc, install deities, and carry on virtuous activities.

सर्वं च वित्तवान्कुर्यात्सदा भोगप्रसिद्धये । कालाच्च पुण्यपाकेन ज्ञानसिद्धिः प्रजायते ४५ ।
sarvaM ca vittavAnkuryAtsadA bhogaprasiddhaye । kAlAcca puNyapAkena jJAnasiddhiH prajAyate 45 ।
After the lapse of some time, when the virtue becomes ripe he shall achieve perfect knowledge.

य इमं शृणुतेऽध्यायं पठते वा नरो द्विजाः । श्रवणस्योपकर्त्ता च देवयज्ञफलं लभेत् ४६ ।
ya imaM zRNute'dhyAyaM paThate vA naro dvijAH । zravaNasyopakarttA ca devayajJaphalaM labhet 46 ।
He who listens to or recites this chapter (or scripture), whether a person or a Brahmin, will attain the merit of performing a Deva Yajna (sacrifice to the gods) and gain the fruits of such a ritual.
