sUta uvAca । zRNudhvamRSayaH prAjJAH zivakSetraM vimuktidam । tadAgamAMstato vakSye lokarakSArthameva hi 1 ।
Sūta said: O wise sages, please listen to the narrative of holy centres with Śiva’s temples all of which accord salvation. Thereafter I shall tell you their traditions for the welfare of the people.

पंचाशत्कोटिविस्तीर्णा सशैलवनकानना । शिवाज्ञया हि पृथिवी लोकं धृत्वा च तिष्ठति २ ।
paMcAzatkoTivistIrNA sazailavanakAnanA । zivAjJayA hi pRthivI lokaM dhRtvA ca tiSThati 2 ।
The Earth, fifty crores of yojanas in extent, abounding in mountains and forests, supports the people at the bidding of Śiva.

tatra tatra zivakSetraM tatra tatra nivAsinAm । mo-kSArthaM kRpayA devaH kSetraM kalpitavAnprabhuH 3 ।
The lord has Himself raised up these temples and holy centres in different places for the liberation of the residents of these localities.

परिग्रहादृषीणां च देवानां परिग्रहात् । स्वयंभूतान्यथान्यानि लोकरक्षार्थमेव हि ४ ।
parigrahAdRSINAM ca devAnAM parigrahAt । svayaMbhUtAnyathAnyAni lokarakSArthameva hi 4 ।
These temples whether self-risen or not, in view of their being accepted (as their frequent resort) by the sages and Devas are intended for the redemption of the people.

तीर्थे क्षेत्रे सदाकार्यं स्नानदानजपादिकम् । अन्यथा रोगदारिद्र य्मूकत्वाद्याप्नुयान्नरः ५ ।
tIrthe kSetre sadAkAryaM snAnadAnajapAdikam । anyathA rogadAridra ymUkatvAdyApnuyAnnaraH 5 ।
In these holy centres and temples, ablutions, charitable gifts, Japas etc must be regularly performed. Otherwise men are sure to be affected by ailments, penury, dumbness etc.

अथास्मिन्भारते वर्षे प्राप्नोति मरणं नरः । स्वयंभूस्थानवासेन पुनर्मानुष्यमाप्नुयात् ६ ।
athAsminbhArate varSe prApnoti maraNaM naraH । svayaMbhUsthAnavAsena punarmAnuSyamApnuyAt 6 ।
If a man dies anywhere in the Bhāratavarṣa॥ 1॥ he shall be reborn again as a man if he has resided in a holy centre where there is a self-risen phallic emblem of Śiva.

क्षेत्रे पापस्य करणं दृढं भवति भूसुराः । पुण्यक्षेत्रे निवासे हि पापमण्वपि नाचरेत् ७ ।
kSetre pApasya karaNaM dRDhaM bhavati bhUsurAH । puNyakSetre nivAse hi pApamaNvapi nAcaret 7 ।
O brahmins, committing sins in a holy centre is of ineffable character. When a man stays in a holy centre he must not commit even the smallest sin.

येन केनाप्युपायेन पुण्यक्षेत्रे वसेन्नरः । सिंधोः शतनदीतीरे संति क्षेत्राण्यनेकशः ८ ।
yena kenApyupAyena puNyakSetre vasennaraH । siMdhoH zatanadItIre saMti kSetrANyanekazaH 8 ।
Somehow men must strive to find a residence in a holy centre. On the shores of the ocean in the confluence of hundreds of rivers there are many such holy centres and temples.

सरस्वती नदी पुण्या प्रोक्ता षष्टिमुखा तथा । तत्तत्तीरे वसेत्प्राज्ञः क्रमाद्ब्रह्मपदं लभेत् ९ ।
sarasvatI nadI puNyA proktA SaSTimukhA tathA । tattattIre vasetprAjJaH kramAdbrahmapadaM labhet 9 ।
The holy river Sarasvatī is said to have sixty mouths or holy centres on its banks. Hence an intelligent man must stay on its banks. He shall attain Brahma’s region gradually.

हिमवद्गिरिजा गंगा पुण्या शतमुखा नदी । तत्तीरे चैव काश्यादिपुण्यक्षेत्राण्यनेकशः 1-12-१० ।
himavadgirijA gaMgA puNyA zatamukhA nadI । tattIre caiva kAzyAdipuNyakSetrANyanekazaH 1-12-10 ।
The river Gaṅgā flowing from the Himālaya mountains is very holy with its hundred mouths. There are many holy centres on its banks such as Kāśī etc.

तत्र तीरं प्रशस्तं हि मृगे मृगबृहस्पतौ । शोणभद्रो दशमुखः पुण्योभीष्टफलप्रदः ११ ।
tatra tIraM prazastaM hi mRge mRgabRhaspatau । zoNabhadro dazamukhaH puNyobhISTaphalapradaH 11 ।
Its banks are highly sacred in the month of Mārgaśīrṣa or when Bṛhaspati (Jupiter) is in the zodiac ‘Capricornus. The river Śoṇabhadra॥ 2॥ of ten mouths is holy and yields all cherished desires.

तत्र स्नानोपवासेन पदं वैनायकं लभेत् । चतुर्वींशमुखा पुण्या नर्मदा च महानदी १२ ।
tatra snAnopavAsena padaM vainAyakaM labhet । caturvIMzamukhA puNyA narmadA ca mahAnadI 12 ।
By ablutions therein and observing fast the devotee shall attain the region of the god Gaṇeśa. The holy Narmadā is a great river of twenty-four mouths.

तस्यां स्नानेन वासेन पदं वैष्णवमाप्नुयात् । तमसा द्वादशमुखा रेवा दशमुखा नदी १३ ।
tasyAM snAnena vAsena padaM vaiSNavamApnuyAt । tamasA dvAdazamukhA revA dazamukhA nadI 13 ।
By a dip therein and residing on its banks the devotee shall attain the region of Viṣṇu. The river Tamasā is of twelve mouths and Revā has ten mouths.

गोदावरी महापुण्या ब्रह्मगोवधनाशिनी । एकविंशमुखा प्रोक्ता रुद्र लोकप्रदायिनी १४ ।
godAvarI mahApuNyA brahmagovadhanAzinI । ekaviMzamukhA proktA rudra lokapradAyinI 14 ।
Godāvarī is very holy and it quells the sins of murdering a brahmin or slaughtering a cow. It is said to have twentyone mouths and accords Rudraloka.

कृष्णवेणी पुण्यनदी सर्वपापक्षयावहा । साष्टादशमुखाप्रोक्ता विष्णुलोकप्रदायिनी १५ ।
kRSNaveNI puNyanadI sarvapApakSayAvahA । sASTAdazamukhAproktA viSNulokapradAyinI 15 ।
Kṛṣṇāveṇī is a sacred river destroying all sins. It is said to have eighteen mouths and it accords Viṣṇuloka.

तुंगभद्रा दशमुखा ब्रह्मलोकप्रदायिनी । सुवर्णमुखरी पुण्या प्रोक्ता नवमुखा तथा १६ ।
tuMgabhadrA dazamukhA brahmalokapradAyinI । suvarNamukharI puNyA proktA navamukhA tathA 16 ।
Tuṅgabhadrā has ten mouths and it accords Brahmaloka. The holy Suvarṇamukharī is said to have nine mouths.

तत्रैव सुप्रजायंते ब्रह्मलोकच्युतास्तथा । सरस्वती च पंपा च कन्याश्वेतनदी शुभा १७ ।
tatraiva suprajAyaMte brahmalokacyutAstathA । sarasvatI ca paMpA ca kanyAzvetanadI zubhA 17 ।
Those who fall from Brahmaloka are born there. By residing on the banks of the auspicious rivers Sarasvatī, Pampā, Kanyā and Śvetanadī one shall attain Indraloka.

एतासां तीरवासेन इंद्र लोकमवाप्नुयात् । सह्याद्रि जा महापुण्या कावेरीति महानदी १८ ।
etAsAM tIravAsena iMdra lokamavApnuyAt । sahyAdri jA mahApuNyA kAverIti mahAnadI 18 ।
The great river Kāveri flowing from the mountain Sahya is very holy and is said to have twenty-seven mouths.

सप्तविंशमुखा प्रोक्ता सर्वाभीष्टं प्रदायिनी । तत्तीराः स्वर्गदाश्चैव ब्रह्मविष्णुपदप्रदाः १९ ।
saptaviMzamukhA proktA sarvAbhISTaM pradAyinI । tattIrAH svargadAzcaiva brahmaviSNupadapradAH 19 ।
It accords all cherished desires. Its banks are the bestowers of heaven and the regions of Brahmā and Viṣṇu.

zivalokapradA zaivAstathA'bhISTaphalapradAH । naimiSe badare snAyAnmeSage ca gurau ravau 1-12-20 ।
hose who follow the Shiva path, bestow the blessings of the Shiva abode and grant desired results. Those who bathe at Naimisha, Badari, and Snayān, as well as in Meṣaga, in the presence of the Guru, receive immense grace.

ब्रह्मलोकप्रदं विद्यात्ततः पूजादिकं तथा । सिंधुनद्यां तथा स्नानं सिंहे कर्कटगे रवौ २१ ।
brahmalokapradaM vidyAttataH pUjAdikaM tathA । siMdhunadyAM tathA snAnaM siMhe karkaTage ravau 21 ।
Knowledge leads to the attainment of Brahmaloka, and similarly, worship and other rituals. Bathing in the Sindhu river, as well as in the Ravi (sun), and at the places of Leo (siṃha) and Crab (karkata), also purifies.

zivalokapradamiti zivenoktaM tathA purA । yamunAzoNayoH snAyAdgurau kanyAgate ravau 23 ।
Drinking the water of Kedara and bathing in it, grants knowledge. One should bathe in the Godavari during the Simha month (Leo) and during the Bṛhaspati's time.

धर्मलोके दंतिलोके महाभोगप्रदं विदुः । कावेर्यां च तथास्नायात्तुलागे तु रवौ गुरौ २४ ।
dharmaloke daMtiloke mahAbhogapradaM viduH । kAveryAM ca tathAsnAyAttulAge tu ravau gurau 24 ।
In Dharma loka and Danti loka, one who performs the ritual gives great enjoyment. One should bathe in the Kaveri river, and during Tulā month, under the influence of the Ravi (Sun) and Guru (Jupiter).

विष्णोर्वचनमाहात्म्यात्सर्वाभीष्टप्रदं विदुः । वृश्चिके मासि संप्राप्ते तथार्के गुरुवृश्चिके २५ ।
viSNorvacanamAhAtmyAtsarvAbhISTapradaM viduH । vRzcike mAsi saMprApte tathArke guruvRzcike 25 ।
Due to the words of Vishnu and their great power, it is known to grant all desires. When the Scorpio month (Vṛścika) arrives, and during the time of the Sun and Guru (Jupiter) in Scorpio.

नर्मदायां नदीस्नानाद्विष्णुलोकमवाप्नुयात् । सुवर्णमुखरीस्नानं चापगे च गुरौ रवौ २६ ।
narmadAyAM nadIsnAnAdviSNulokamavApnuyAt । suvarNamukharIsnAnaM cApage ca gurau ravau 26 ।
By bathing in the Narmada river, one attains Vishnu's abode. By bathing in Suvarnamukharī, and in the Ganga during the time of Guru (Jupiter) and Ravi (Sun).

zivalokapradamiti brAhmaNo vacanaM yathA । mRgamAsi tathA snAyAjjAhnavyAM mRgage gurau 27 ।
As the Brahman says, bathing in the Shivaloka leads to the attainment of Shiva's realm. Similarly, one should bathe in Jahnavī (Ganga) during the Mṛiga month under the influence of Guru (Jupiter) and Ravi (Sun).

zivalokapradamiti brahmaNo vacanaM yathA । brahmaviSNvoH pade bhuktvA tadaMte jJAnamApnuyAt 28 ।
As the Brahman says, bathing in the Shivaloka leads to the attainment of Shiva's realm. By experiencing the realms of Brahma and Vishnu, one ultimately attains knowledge.

गंगायां माघमासे तु तथाकुंभगते रवौ । श्राद्धं वा पिंडदानं वा तिलोदकमथापिवा २९ ।
gaMgAyAM mAghamAse tu tathAkuMbhagate ravau । zrAddhaM vA piMDadAnaM vA tilodakamathApivA 29 ।
In the Ganga during the Magha month, when the Sun enters Capricorn, One should perform Shraddha, Pindadana, or even offer Tilodaka (water mixed with sesame seeds).

vaMzadvayapitR-NAM ca kulakoTyuddharaM viduH । kRSNaveNyAM prazaMsaMti mInage ca gurau ravau 1-12-30 ।
They who perform the rituals for the ancestors of two family lines and raise their family lineage, Praise the Krishnaveni (a name for the Ganga), and similarly the Fish (Pisces) under the influence of Guru (Jupiter) and Ravi (Sun).

तत्तत्तीर्थे च तन्मासि स्नानमिंद्र पदप्रदम् । गंगां वा सह्यजां वापि समाश्रित्य वसेद्बुधः ३१ ।
tattattIrthe ca tanmAsi snAnamiMdra padapradam । gaMgAM vA sahyajAM vApi samAzritya vasedbudhaH 31 ।
The ceremonial ablutions taken in the different sacred waters in the respective months accord the region of Indra. An intelligent man shall resort to Gaṅgā or the Kāverī river.

तत्कालकृतपापस्य क्षयो भवति निश्चितम् । रुद्र लोकप्रदान्येव संति क्षेत्राण्यनेकशः ३२ ।
tatkAlakRtapApasya kSayo bhavati nizcitam । rudra lokapradAnyeva saMti kSetrANyanekazaH 32 ।
Certainly his sin will be quelled thereby. There are many holy centres yielding Rudraloka.

ताम्रपर्णी वेगवती ब्रह्मलोकफलप्रदे । तयोस्तीरे हि संत्येव क्षेत्राणि स्वर्गदानि च ३३ ।
tAmraparNI vegavatI brahmalokaphalaprade । tayostIre hi saMtyeva kSetrANi svargadAni ca 33 ।
The rivers Tāmraparnī and Vegavatī accord Brahmaloka. There are holy centres on their banks bestowing heaven on the worshipper.

संति क्षेत्राणि तन्मध्ये पुण्यदानि च भूरिशः । तत्र तत्र वसन्प्राज्ञस्तादृशं च फलं लभेत् ३४ ।
saMti kSetrANi tanmadhye puNyadAni ca bhUrizaH । tatra tatra vasanprAjJastAdRzaM ca phalaM labhet 34 ।
In between these rivers there are meritorious holy centres. Intelligent men residing there will reap the respective fruits thereof.

सदाचारेण सद्वृत्त्या सदा भावनयापि च । वसेद्दयालुः प्राज्ञो वै नान्यथा तत्फलं लभेत् ३५ ।
sadAcAreNa sadvRttyA sadA bhAvanayApi ca । vaseddayAluH prAjJo vai nAnyathA tatphalaM labhet 35 ।
Only by good conduct, good predilections and good concepts as well as by being sympathetic can the devotee derive the benefit, not otherwise.

पुण्यक्षेत्रे कृतं पुण्यं बहुधा ऋद्धिमृच्छति । पुण्यक्षेत्रे कृतं पापं महदण्वपि जायते ३६ ।
puNyakSetre kRtaM puNyaM bahudhA RddhimRcchati । puNyakSetre kRtaM pApaM mahadaNvapi jAyate 36 ।
Meritorious actions performed in a holy centre flourish in many ways. Sinful acts committed in a holy centre, though slight, become manifold.

तत्कालं जीवनार्थश्चेत्पुण्येन क्षयमेष्यति । पुण्यमैश्वर्यदं प्राहुः कायिकं वाचिकं तथा ३७ ।
tatkAlaM jIvanArthazcetpuNyena kSayameSyati । puNyamaizvaryadaM prAhuH kAyikaM vAcikaM tathA 37 ।
If the sin committed in a holy centre is only for livelihood, the merit will destroy that sin. Merit accords prosperity and quells physical, verbal and mental sins.

मानसं च तथा पापं तादृशं नाशयेद्द्विजाः । मानसं वज्रलेपं तु कल्पकल्पानुगं तथा ३८ ।
mAnasaM ca tathA pApaM tAdRzaM nAzayeddvijAH । mAnasaM vajralepaM tu kalpakalpAnugaM tathA 38 ।
O brahmins, the mental sin is adamantine in sticking to the sinner and it continues for many Kalpas.

ध्यानादेव हि तन्नश्येन्नान्यथा नाशमृच्छति । वाचिकं जपजालेन कायिकं कायशोषणात् ३९ ।
dhyAnAdeva hi tannazyennAnyathA nAzamRcchati । vAcikaM japajAlena kAyikaM kAyazoSaNAt 39 ।
The mental sin can be wiped off only by meditation and not otherwise. The verbal sin is wiped off by Japas and the physical sin by forcefully causing the emaciation of the body.

दानाद्धनकृतं नश्येन्नाऽन्यथाकल्पकोटिभिः । क्वचित्पापेन पुण्यं च वृद्धिपूर्वेण नश्यति 1-12-४० ।
dAnAddhanakRtaM nazyennA'nyathAkalpakoTibhiH । kvacitpApena puNyaM ca vRddhipUrveNa nazyati 1-12-40 ।
Sins committed by means of wealth can be wiped off by making charitable gifts and not otherwise, though crores of Kalpas (Aeons) may elapse. In some places the increasing sin destroys the merit.

बीजांशश्चैव वृद्ध्यंशो भोगांशः पुण्यपापयोः । ज्ञाननाश्यो हि बीजांशो वृद्धिरुक्तप्रकारतः ४१ ।
bIjAMzazcaiva vRddhyaMzo bhogAMzaH puNyapApayoH । jJAnanAzyo hi bIjAMzo vRddhiruktaprakArataH 41 ।
Both Merit and Demerit have three aspects:—the seed stage, flourishing stage and the enjoyment stage. If they are in the seed stage they can be quelled by perfect knowledge. If they are in the flourishing stage they can be quelled in the manner described before.

भोगांशो भोगनाश्यस्तु नान्यथा पुण्यकोटिभिः । बीजप्ररोहे नष्टे तु शेषो भोगाय कल्पते ४२ ।
bhogAMzo bhoganAzyastu nAnyathA puNyakoTibhiH । bIjaprarohe naSTe tu zeSo bhogAya kalpate 42 ।
If they are in the enjoyment stage they get destroyed only by enjoying and experiencing their fruits and not otherwise though one might have performed crores of meritorious deeds. If the seed or the flourishing seedlings are destroyed what remains must be experienced and wiped off.

देवानां पूजया चैव ब्रह्मणानां च दानतः । तपोधिक्याच्च कालेन भोगः सह्यो भवेन्नृणाम् । तस्मात्पापमकृत्वैव वस्तव्यं सुखमिच्छता ४३।
devAnAM pUjayA caiva brahmaNAnAM ca dAnataH । tapodhikyAcca kAlena bhogaH sahyo bhavennRNAm । tasmAtpApamakRtvaiva vastavyaM sukhamicchatA 43।
If one regularly performs worship of gods, makes gifts to brahmins and performs sufficient penance, the enjoyment becomes bearable. Hence those who wish for happiness must refrain from committing sins.
