RSaya UcuH । kathaM liMgaM pratiSThApyaM kathaM vAtasya lakSaNam । kathaM vA tatsamabhyarcyaM deze kAle ca kena hi 1 ।
The sages said: How is the phallic form of Śiva to be installed? What are the characteristic features of the form? How is it to be worshipped? What is the appropriate time and place for worship. What sort of performer he must be?

सूत उवाच । युष्मदर्थं प्रवक्ष्यामि बुद्ध्यतामवधानतः । अनुकूले शुभे काले पुण्ये तीर्थे तटे तथा २।
sUta uvAca । yuSmadarthaM pravakSyAmi buddhyatAmavadhAnataH । anukUle zubhe kAle puNye tIrthe taTe tathA 2।
Sūta said: I shall tell you everything for your sake, please listen attentively. The time must be convenient and auspicious. The place must be a holy centre. It can be on the bank of a river or anywhere facilitating a daily worship.

यथेष्टं लिंगमारोप्यं यत्र स्यान्नित्यमर्चनम् । पार्थिवेन तथाप्येनं तैजसेन यथारुचि ३ ।
yatheSTaM liMgamAropyaM yatra syAnnityamarcanam । pArthivena tathApyenaM taijasena yathAruci 3 ।
It can be of Pārthiva (Earth), Āpya (Watery) or Taijasa (fiery) type.

कल्पलक्षणसंयुक्तं लिंगं पूजाफलं लभेत् । सर्वलक्षणसंयुक्तं सद्यः पूजाफलप्रदम् ४ ।
kalpalakSaNasaMyuktaM liMgaM pUjAphalaM labhet । sarvalakSaNasaMyuktaM sadyaH pUjAphalapradam 4 ।
If it has all the characteristics mentioned in the sacred texts, the devotee derives the fruit of worship. If it has all characteristics, it accords the fruit of worship instantaneously.

चरे विशिष्यते सूक्ष्मं स्थावरे स्थूलमेव हि । सलक्षणं सपीठं च स्थापयेच्छिवनिर्मितम् ५ ।
care viziSyate sUkSmaM sthAvare sthUlameva hi । salakSaNaM sapIThaM ca sthApayecchivanirmitam 5 ।
A subtle one is recommended if it be mobile and a gross one if it is stationary. The phallic emblem of good characteristics shall be set up in the seat of the same sort.

मंडलं चतुरस्रं वा त्रिकोणमथवा तथा । खट्वांगवन्मध्यसूक्ष्मं लिंगपीठं महाफलं ६ ।
maMDalaM caturasraM vA trikoNamathavA tathA । khaTvAMgavanmadhyasUkSmaM liMgapIThaM mahAphalaM 6 ।
The seat can be circular, square or triangular in shape. The one shaped like a cot in the middle is of middle efficacy.

प्रथमं मृच्छिलादिभ्यो लिगं लोहादिभिः कृतम् । येन लिंगं तेन पीठं स्थावरे हि विशिष्यते ७ ।
prathamaM mRcchilAdibhyo ligaM lohAdibhiH kRtam । yena liMgaM tena pIThaM sthAvare hi viziSyate 7 ।
At first, the emblem was made of earth or rock; then it used to be made with the metals. If it is stationary, the emblem and the Pīṭha should be of the one and the same material.

लिंगं पीठं चरे त्वेकं लिंगं बाणकृतं विना । लिंगप्रमाणं कर्तृ-णां द्वादशांगुलमुत्तमम् ८ ।
liMgaM pIThaM care tvekaM liMgaM bANakRtaM vinA । liMgapramANaM kartR-NAM dvAdazAMgulamuttamam 8 ।
Save the one which the asura Bāṇa worshipped, both the emblem and the seat shall be unitary, if emblem be mobile. The length of the emblem shall be of the measure of twelve fingers of the devotee.

न्यूनं चेत्फलमल्पं स्यादधिकं नैव दूष्यते । कर्तुरेकांगुलन्यूनं चरेपि च तथैव हि ९ ।
nyUnaM cetphalamalpaM syAdadhikaM naiva dUSyate । karturekAMgulanyUnaM carepi ca tathaiva hi 9 ।
If it is shorter it is less efficacious; if it is longer there is no harm. A shortage by the breadth of the finger of the devotee in regard to the mobile one is similarly harmless.

आदौ विमानं शिल्पेन कार्यं देवगणैर्युतम् । तत्र गर्भगृहे रम्ये दृढे दर्पणसंनिभे 1-11-१० ।
Adau vimAnaM zilpena kAryaM devagaNairyutam । tatra garbhagRhe ramye dRDhe darpaNasaMnibhe 1-11-10 ।
A Vimāna (chariot-like structure) of artistic beauty shall be made at first wherein the divine attendants shall be represented. In its firm and beautiful sanctum sanctorum shining like a mirror.

studded with the nine precious gems—sapphire, lapis lazuli, Emerald.

Pearl, coral, Gomedaka, diamonds and rubies, the emblem shall be installed on the altar.

संपूज्य लिंगं सद्याद्यैः पंचस्थाने यथाक्रमम् । अग्नौ च हुत्वा बहुधा हविषास कलं च माम् १३ ।
saMpUjya liMgaM sadyAdyaiH paMcasthAne yathAkramam । agnau ca hutvA bahudhA haviSAsa kalaM ca mAm 13 ।
After duly worshiping the Lingam with the prescribed offerings at the five sacred places, And performing numerous oblations into the fire, offering me the sacred offerings.

अभ्यर्च्य गुरुमाचार्यमर्थैः कामैश्च बांधवम् । दद्यादैश्वर्यमर्थिभ्यो जडमप्यजडं तथा १४ ।
abhyarcya gurumAcAryamarthaiH kAmaizca bAMdhavam । dadyAdaizvaryamarthibhyo jaDamapyajaDaM tathA 14 ।
After offering respect to the Guru (spiritual teacher) and the teacher’s family with wealth and desires, One should bestow wealth upon those who are worthy, even unto those who are ignorant or inert (jaḍa), treating them as enlightened.

स्थावरं जंगमं जीवं सर्वं संतोष्य यत्नतः । सुवर्णपूरिते श्वभ्रे नवरत्नैश्च पूरिते १५ ।
sthAvaraM jaMgamaM jIvaM sarvaM saMtoSya yatnataH । suvarNapUrite zvabhre navaratnaizca pUrite 15 ।
With great effort, one should be content with all living beings, both immobile (sthāvara) and mobile (jaṅgama), And offer devotion to them, with a golden-filled sky and filled with nine jewels.

सद्यादि ब्रह्म चोच्चार्य ध्यात्वा देवं परं शुभम् । उदीर्य च महामंत्रमॐकारं नादघोषितम् १६ ।
sadyAdi brahma coccArya dhyAtvA devaM paraM zubham । udIrya ca mahAmaMtramaOMkAraM nAdaghoSitam 16 ।
Immediately after chanting the sacred syllable 'Brahma', meditating upon the Supreme Divine, One should recite the great mantra 'Om', which is the sound of cosmic vibration.

लिंगं तत्र प्रतिष्ठाप्य लिगं पीठेन योजयेत् । लिंगं सपीठं निक्षिप्य नित्यलेपेन बंधयेत् १७ ।
liMgaM tatra pratiSThApya ligaM pIThena yojayet । liMgaM sapIThaM nikSipya nityalepena baMdhayet 17 ।
After establishing the Lingam there, one should connect it with a pedestal, Then, placing the Lingam with the pedestal, it should be bound with daily consecration (or offerings).

एवं बेरं च संस्थाप्यं तत्रैव परमं शुभम् । पंचाक्षरेण बेरं तु उत्सवार्थं वहिस्तथा १८ ।
evaM beraM ca saMsthApyaM tatraiva paramaM zubham । paMcAkSareNa beraM tu utsavArthaM vahistathA 18 ।
Similarly the embodied image shall also be fixed there auspiciously. For the sake of festivals the embodied image shall be installed outside with the five-syllabled mantra.

बेरं गुरुभ्यो गृह्णीयात्साधुभिः पूजितं तु वा । एवं लिंगे च बेरे च पूजा शिवपदप्रदा १९ ।
beraM gurubhyo gRhNIyAtsAdhubhiH pUjitaM tu vA । evaM liMge ca bere ca pUjA zivapadapradA 19 ।
The embodied image shall be taken from the preceptors or it must be one that has been worshipped by saintly men. Such an adoration of the embodied image and the phallic emblem accords the region of Śiva.

पुनश्च द्विविधं प्रोक्तं स्थावरं जंगमं तथा । स्थावरं लिंगमित्याहुस्तरुगुल्मादिकं तथा 1-11-२० ।
punazca dvividhaM proktaM sthAvaraM jaMgamaM tathA । sthAvaraM liMgamityAhustarugulmAdikaM tathA 1-11-20 ।
The phallic emblem is of two varieties: the stationary and the mobile. Trees, hedges etc. represent the stationary.

जंगमं लिंगमित्याहुः कृमिकीटादिकं तथा । स्थावरस्य च शुश्रूषा जंगमस्य च तर्पणम् २१ ।
jaMgamaM liMgamityAhuH kRmikITAdikaM tathA । sthAvarasya ca zuzrUSA jaMgamasya ca tarpaNam 21 ।
Worms, insects etc. represent the mobile. For the stationary one, tending and similar service is recommended. For the mobile one Tarpaṇa (propitiation) is recommended.

तत्तत्सुखानुरागेण शिवपूजां विदुर्बुधाः । पीठमंबामयं सर्वं शिवलिंगं च चिन्मयम् २२ ।
tattatsukhAnurAgeNa zivapUjAM vidurbudhAH । pIThamaMbAmayaM sarvaM zivaliMgaM ca cinmayam 22 ।
With a love for the happiness of different beings Śiva Pūjā shall be performed—so say the wise men. The pedestal represents Śiva’s consort—Pārvatī and his phallic emblem represents the sentient being.

यथा देवीमुमामंके धृत्वा तिष्ठति शंकरः । तथा लिंगमिदं पीठं धृत्वा तिष्ठति संततम् २३ ।
yathA devImumAmaMke dhRtvA tiSThati zaMkaraH । tathA liMgamidaM pIThaM dhRtvA tiSThati saMtatam 23 ।
Just as lord Śiva remains ever in close embrace of the Goddess Pārvatī, so also the phallic emblem holds on to the pedestal, for ever.

एवं स्थाप्य महालिंगं पूजयेदुपचारकैः । नित्यपूजा यथा शक्तिध्वजादिकरणं तथा २४ ।
evaM sthApya mahAliMgaM pUjayedupacArakaiH । nityapUjA yathA zaktidhvajAdikaraNaM tathA 24 ।
Such is the installation of Śiva’s great phallic emblem which shall be worshipped with due homage. The daily worship shall be made in accorance with one’s capacity; so also the fixation of banner etc.

इति संस्थापयेल्लिंगं साक्षाच्छिवपदप्रदम् । अथवा चरलिंगं तु षोडशैरुपचारकैः २५ ।
iti saMsthApayelliMgaM sAkSAcchivapadapradam । athavA caraliMgaM tu SoDazairupacArakaiH 25 ।
The devotee shall install the phallic emblem and it will accord directly the region of Śiva. Or the devotee shall worship the mobile emblem with the sixteen types of homage and services as prescribed.

पूजयेच्च यथान्यायं क्रमाच्छिवपदप्रदम् । आवाहनं चासनं च अर्घ्यं पाद्यं तथैव च २६ ।
pUjayecca yathAnyAyaM kramAcchivapadapradam । AvAhanaM cAsanaM ca arghyaM pAdyaM tathaiva ca 26 ।
One should worship in the proper manner, step by step, leading to the attainment of Shiva's divine presence, With the ritual offerings such as the invocation, seat, water for washing the feet, and other offerings.

तदंगाचमनं चैव स्नानमभ्यंगपूर्वकम् । वस्त्रं गंधं तथा पुष्पं धूपं दीपं निवेदनम् २७ ।
tadaMgAcamanaM caiva snAnamabhyaMgapUrvakam । vastraM gaMdhaM tathA puSpaM dhUpaM dIpaM nivedanam 27 ।
Then, one should perform achamana (sipping water), followed by a bath, preceded by abhyanga (oil massage), Then offerings of clothes, fragrance, flowers, incense, lamp, and food offerings should be made.

नीराजनं च तांबूलं नमस्कारो विसर्जनम् । अथवाऽर्घ्यादिकं कृत्वा नैवेद्यां तं यथाविधि २८ ।
nIrAjanaM ca tAMbUlaM namaskAro visarjanam । athavA'rghyAdikaM kRtvA naivedyAM taM yathAvidhi 28 ।
Then, one should perform Nīrājana (waving of the light), offer betel leaves, perform Namaskara (salutation), and then conclude the ritual by offering the arghya and other items, followed by the Naivedya (food offerings) in the proper manner.

अथाभिषेकं नैवेद्यं नमस्कारं च तर्पणम् । यथाशक्ति सदाकुर्यात्क्रमाच्छिवपदप्रदम् २९ ।
athAbhiSekaM naivedyaM namaskAraM ca tarpaNam । yathAzakti sadAkuryAtkramAcchivapadapradam 29 ।
Then, one should perform the Abhiṣeka (ritual bathing of the deity), offer Naivedya (food offerings), perform Namaskara (salutation), and give Tarpana (offerings of water) as per their ability, always following the prescribed order to attain the divine presence of Shiva.

अथवा मानुषे लिंगेप्यार्षे दैवे स्वयंभुवि । स्थापितेऽपूर्वके लिंगे सोपचारं यथा तथा 1-11-३० ।
athavA mAnuSe liMgepyArSe daive svayaMbhuvi । sthApite'pUrvake liMge sopacAraM yathA tathA 1-11-30 ।
Or he shall perform all the sixteen rites in the phallic emblem of human, saintly or godly origin, or in one naturally risen up (Svayambhū) or in one of very extraordinary nature installed duly.

पूजोपकरणे दत्ते यत्किंचित्फलमश्नुते । प्रदक्षिणानमस्कारैः क्रमाच्छिवपदप्रदम् ३१ ।
pUjopakaraNe datte yatkiMcitphalamaznute । pradakSiNAnamaskAraiH kramAcchivapadapradam 31 ।
If the devotee makes gifts of articles of worship he will get some benefit or other. By circumambulation and obeisance he will attain Śiva’s region gradually.

लिंगं दर्शनमात्रं वा नियमेन शिवप्रदम् । मृत्पिष्टगोशकृत्पुष्पैः करवीरेण वा फलैः ३२ ।
liMgaM darzanamAtraM vA niyamena zivapradam । mRtpiSTagozakRtpuSpaiH karavIreNa vA phalaiH 32 ।
Regular vision of the phallic emblem accords benefit. Or the devotee can make a phallic emblem out of clay, cow-dung, flowers, Karavīra fruit.

गुडेन नवनीतेन भस्मनान्नैर्यथारुचि । लिंगं यत्नेन कृत्वांते यजेत्तदनुसारतः ३३ ।
guDena navanItena bhasmanAnnairyathAruci । liMgaM yatnena kRtvAMte yajettadanusArataH 33 ।
With jaggery (guḍa), fresh butter (navanīta), and ashes (bhasma), according to one's preference, The linga should be properly prepared and offered with effort, and then the ritual should be performed in accordance with the prescribed method.

अंगुष्ठादावपि तथा पूजामिच्छंति केचन । लिंगकर्मणि सर्वत्र निषेधोस्ति न कर्हिचित् ३४ ।
aMguSThAdAvapi tathA pUjAmicchaMti kecana । liMgakarmaNi sarvatra niSedhosti na karhicit 34 ।
Some authorities have recommended the worship of the phallic emblem on the thumb etc. In these rites of phallic worship, there is no sort of prohibition whatsoever.

सर्वत्र फलदाता हि प्रयासानुगुणं शिवः । अथवा लिंगदानं वा लिंगमौल्यमथापि वा ३५ ।
sarvatra phaladAtA hi prayAsAnuguNaM zivaH । athavA liMgadAnaM vA liMgamaulyamathApi vA 35 ।
Everywhere Śiva accords benefit as befitting the endeavour put in. Or he shall make gifts of the phallic emblem or the value of its construction.

श्रद्धया शिवभक्ताय दत्तं शिवपदप्रदम् । अथवा प्रणवं नित्यं जपेद्दशसहस्रकम् ३६ ।
zraddhayA zivabhaktAya dattaM zivapadapradam । athavA praNavaM nityaM japeddazasahasrakam 36 ।
Whatever is given to a devotee of Śiva with sincere faith accords Śiva’s region. Or the devotee can repeat the Praṇava mantra ten thousand times every day.

संध्ययोश्च सहस्रं वा ज्ञेयं शिवपदप्रदम् । जपकाले मकारांतं मनःशुद्धिकरं भजेत् ३७ ।
saMdhyayozca sahasraM vA jJeyaM zivapadapradam । japakAle makArAMtaM manaHzuddhikaraM bhajet 37 ।
Repetition of Om (Praṇava mantra) a thousand times at dawn and at dusk is known to be according Śiva’s region. At the time of the repeated utterance (Japa) of the mantra, (Om) ending with “M” purifies the mind.

समाधौ मानसं प्रोक्तमुपांशु सार्वकालिकम् । समानप्रणवं चेमं बिंदुनादयुतं विदुः ३८ ।
samAdhau mAnasaM proktamupAMzu sArvakAlikam । samAnapraNavaM cemaM biMdunAdayutaM viduH 38 ।
At the time of Samādhi (meditation) the repetition of Oṃkāra must be mental. Muttering of it in low voice can be practised at all times. The same with Bindu (dot) and Nāda (sound) is also of the same efficacy.

अथ पंचाक्षरं नित्यं जपेदयुतमादरात् । संध्ययोश्च सहस्रं वा ज्ञेयं शिवपदप्रदम् ३९ ।
atha paMcAkSaraM nityaM japedayutamAdarAt । saMdhyayozca sahasraM vA jJeyaM zivapadapradam 39 ।
Or the devotee can with due reverence repeat the five-syllabled mantra ten thousand times every day or a thousand times at dawn and at dusk. It accords the region of Śiva.

प्रणवेनादिसंयुक्तं ब्राह्मणानां विशिष्यते । दीक्षायुक्तं गुरोर्ग्राह्यं मंत्रं ह्यथ फलाप्तये 1-11-४० ।
praNavenAdisaMyuktaM brAhmaNAnAM viziSyate । dIkSAyuktaM gurorgrAhyaM maMtraM hyatha phalAptaye 1-11-40 ।
Repetition of the five-syllabled mantra (Namaśśivāya) by a brahmin is specially efficacious with the Om (Praṇava) prefixed. A mantra must be received from a preceptor with proper initiation for the acquisition of the desired fruit.

By repeating it one, two, three or four crores of times, the devotee shall attain the region of Brahmā and others. One can repeat any of the syllables a hundred thousand times or all of the syllables separately a hundred thousand times.

Alternatively, one should understand that the repetition of a lakh (100,000) of letters (syllables) leads to the attainment of Shiva's supreme path, But a thousand repetitions of a thousand mantras, done over a thousand days, is even more powerful.

The regular study of the Vedas accords Śiva’s region. All the other sorts of mantras shall be repeated a hundred thousand times.

If the mantra consists of only one syllable it shall first be repeated a crore times and thereafter a thousand times with great devotion.

Doing thus according to one’s capacity one shall gradually attain Śiva’s region. It is the duty of every one to repeat a mantra pleasing to him every day till his death.

If a man repeats “Om” a thousand times he shall get all his desires fulfilled at the bidding of Śiva. If he plants a flower-garden for the sake of Śiva or even renders service by sweeping and cleaning Śiva’s temple and precincts he shall attain Śiva’s region.

One should perform actions dedicated to Shiva for the sake of Shiva's work, and by doing so, attain Shiva's supreme abode. Additionally, one should reside in a Shiva temple or holy place and continuously engage in devotion.

In a temple built by ordinary man, the space upto a hundred hastas (1 hasta = 30 cms) from the phallic image is holy. In a temple dedicated to sages, the space upto a thousand Aratnis (1 Aratni = 45 cms) from the phallic image is holy. In a temple dedicated to sages, the space upto a thousand Aratnis (1 Aratni = 45 cms) from the emblem is holy.

If the phallic emblem had been installed by gods the space upto a thousand Aratnis is holy. In a temple where phallic emblem is self-risen, the space upto a thousand Dhanuḥ. Pramāṇas (a dhanuḥ. pramāṇa = 4 hastas) is holy.

The tank, well, pond etc. in a holy centre shall be considered Śiva-Gaṅgā in accordance with Śiva’s statement.

By taking bath or making gifts or muttering mantras in that centre one will attain Śiva. One shall seek shelter in a temple of Śiva and stay there till death.

The rites of obsequies of the second day or the tenth day, the offerings of monthly Piṇḍas, the rite of Sapiṇḍīkaraṇa or the annual Śrāddha shall be performed in a holy centre.

He will instantly attain Śiva’s region. By staying there for seven, five or three nights or a single night he will attain Śiva’s region gradually.

By observing three nights or one night (of dedicated worship) in the prescribed manner, one can attain Shiva's supreme abode. According to their own caste and conduct, a person achieves what they deserve in this world.

By the uplift in the caste and devotion the fruit gains more efficacy. Anything done with a desire in view yields results immediately.

Morning is to be understood as the time for rituals (formal worship), Noon is associated with desires (personal or worldly desires), Evening is the time for peaceful devotion, and night is the same as evening, meant for peaceful worship.

The two middle Yāmas (1 Yāma is equal to 3 hours) at night are called Niśītha. The worship of Śiva at that time accords desired results.

If a man performs rites after realising this, he shall achieve the due results. Especially in the Kali age the achievement of fruit is only due to the precise performance of actions.

Please tell us about the traditions of Śiva temples also. Sūta said: All of you listen faithfully to the account of all holy centres and their traditions.
