Izvara uvAca । vatsakAH svastivaH kaccidvartate mama zAsanAt । jagacca devatAvaMzaH svasvakarmaNi kiM navA 1 ।
Īśvara said: Dear children, hail to ye. I hope the universe and the race of the deities, under my suzerainty, flourish in their respective duties.

प्रागेव विदितं युद्धं ब्रह्मविष्ण्वोर्मयासुराः । भवतामभितापेन पौनरुक्त्येन भाषितम् २ ।
prAgeva viditaM yuddhaM brahmaviSNvormayAsurAH । bhavatAmabhitApena paunaruktyena bhASitam 2 ।
O gods, the fight between Brahmā and Viṣṇu is already known to me. This agitation on your part is like a redundant speech.

इति सस्मितया माध्व्या कुमारपरिभाषया । समतोषयदंबायाः स पतिस्तत्सुरव्रजम् ३ ।
iti sasmitayA mAdhvyA kumAraparibhASayA । samatoSayadaMbAyAH sa patistatsuravrajam 3 ।
Thus the consort of Ambā consoled the concourse of devas with honeylike speech sweetened with a smile in the manner of appeasing children.

अथ युद्धांगणं गंतुं हरिधात्रोरधीश्वरः । आज्ञापयद्गणेशानां शतं तत्रैव संसदि ४ ।
atha yuddhAMgaNaM gaMtuM haridhAtroradhIzvaraH । AjJApayadgaNezAnAM zataM tatraiva saMsadi 4 ।
In that very assembly the lord announced his desire to go to the battlefield of Hari and Brahmā and accordingly issued His directive to a hundred of the commanders of his attendants.

ततो वाद्यं बहुविधं प्रयाणाय परेशितुः । गणेश्वराश्च संनद्धा नानावाहनभूषणाः ५ ।
tato vAdyaM bahuvidhaM prayANAya parezituH । gaNezvarAzca saMnaddhA nAnAvAhanabhUSaNAH 5 ।
Different kinds of musical instruments were played to announce the start of the journey of the Lord. The commanders of the attendants were in readiness fully bedecked in their ornaments, seated in their respective vehicles.

प्रणवाकारमाद्यंतं पंचमंडलमंडितम्। आरुरोह रथं भद्र मंबिकापतिरीश्वरः । ससूनुगणमिंद्रा द्याः सर्वेप्यनुययुः सुराः ६।
praNavAkAramAdyaMtaM paMcamaMDalamaMDitam। Aruroha rathaM bhadra maMbikApatirIzvaraH । sasUnugaNamiMdrA dyAH sarvepyanuyayuH surAH 6।
The lord, consort of Ambikā, mounted the holy chariot shaped like Oṃkāra from front to the back and embellished m five circular rings. He was accompanied by his sons and Gaṇas. All the devas, Indra and others, followed.

चित्रध्वजव्यजनचामरपुष्पवर्षसंगतिनृत्यनिवहैरपि वाद्यवर्गैः । संमानितः पशुपतिः परया च देव्या साकं तयोः समरभूमिमगात्ससैन्यः ७ ।
citradhvajavyajanacAmarapuSpavarSasaMgatinRtyanivahairapi vAdyavargaiH । saMmAnitaH pazupatiH parayA ca devyA sAkaM tayoH samarabhUmimagAtsasainyaH 7 ।
Honoured suitably by the display of banners of various colours, fans, chowries, scattered flowers, music, dance and the instrument players, and accompanied by the great goddess (Pārvatī), Paśupati (Śiva) went to the battle-field with the whole army.

समीक्ष्यं तु तयोर्युद्धं निगूढोऽभ्रं समास्थितः । समाप्तवाद्यनिर्घोषः शांतोरुगणनिःस्वनः ८ ।
samIkSyaM tu tayoryuddhaM nigUDho'bhraM samAsthitaH । samAptavAdyanirghoSaH zAMtorugaNaniHsvanaH 8 ।
On espying the battle, the lord vanished in the firmament. The play of the music stopped and the tumult of the Gaṇas subsided.

अथ ब्रह्माच्युतौ वीरौ हंतुकामौ परस्परम् । माहेश्वरेण चाऽस्त्रेण तथा पाशुपतेन च ९ ।
atha brahmAcyutau vIrau haMtukAmau parasparam । mAhezvareNa cA'streNa tathA pAzupatena ca 9 ।
There in the battlefield Brahmā and Acyuta desirous of killing each other were awaiting the result of the Māheś-vara and the Paśupata weapons hurled by them.

अस्त्रज्वालैरथो दग्धं ब्रह्मविष्ण्वोर्जगत्त्रयम् । ईशोपि तं निरीक्ष्याथ ह्यकालप्रलयं भृशम् 1-7-१० ।
astrajvAlairatho dagdhaM brahmaviSNvorjagattrayam । Izopi taM nirIkSyAtha hyakAlapralayaM bhRzam 1-7-10 ।
The flames emitted by the two weapons of Brahmā and Viṣṇu burned the three worlds.

महानलस्तंभविभीषणाकृतिर्बभूव तन्मध्यतले स निष्कलः 11।
mahAnalastaMbhavibhISaNAkRtirbabhUva tanmadhyatale sa niSkalaH 11।
On seeing this imminent untimely dissolution the bodiless form of Śiva assumed the terrific form of a huge column of fire in their midst.

ते अस्त्रे चापि सज्वाले लोकसंहरणक्षमे । निपतेतुः क्षणे नैव ह्याविर्भूते महानले १२ ।
te astre cApi sajvAle lokasaMharaNakSame । nipatetuH kSaNe naiva hyAvirbhUte mahAnale 12 ।
The two weapons of fiery flame potential enough to destroy the entire world fell into the huge column of fire that manifested itself there instantaneously.

दृष्ट्वा तदद्भुतं चित्रमस्त्रशांतिकरं शुभम् । किमेतदद्भुताकारमित्यूचुश्च परस्परम् १३ ।
dRSTvA tadadbhutaM citramastrazAMtikaraM zubham । kimetadadbhutAkAramityUcuzca parasparam 13 ।
Seeing that auspicious wonderful phenomenon assuaging the weapons they asked each other “What is this wonderful form?”

अतींद्रि यमिदं स्तंभमग्निरूपं किमुत्थितम् । अस्योर्ध्वमपि चाधश्च आवयोर्लक्ष्यमेव हि १४ ।
atIMdri yamidaM staMbhamagnirUpaM kimutthitam । asyordhvamapi cAdhazca AvayorlakSyameva hi 14 ।
“What is this column of fire that has risen up? It is beyond the range of senses. We have to find out its top and bottom.”

इति व्यवसितौ वीरौ मिलितौ वीरमानिनौ । तत्परौ तत्परीक्षार्थं प्रतस्थातेऽथ सत्वरम् १५ ।
iti vyavasitau vIrau militau vIramAninau । tatparau tatparIkSArthaM pratasthAte'tha satvaram 15 ।
Jointly deciding like this, the two heroes proud of their prowess immediately set about assiduously in their quest.

आवयोर्मिश्रयोस्तत्र कार्यमेकं न संभवेत् । इत्युक्त्वा सूकरतनुर्विष्णुस्तस्यादिमीयिवान् १६ ।
Avayormizrayostatra kAryamekaM na saMbhavet । ityuktvA sUkaratanurviSNustasyAdimIyivAn 16 ।
“Nothing will turn up if we are together”. Saying this, Viṣṇu assumed the form of a Boar and went in search of the root.

तथा ब्रह्माहं सतनुस्तदंतं वीक्षितुं ययौ । भित्त्वा पातालनिलयं गत्वा दूरतरं हरिः १७ ।
tathA brahmAhaM satanustadaMtaM vIkSituM yayau । bhittvA pAtAlanilayaM gatvA dUrataraM hariH 17 ।
Brahmā in the form of a swan went up in search of the top. Piercing through the netherworlds and going very far below, Viṣṇu could not see the root of the fiery column.

नाऽपश्यत्तस्य संस्थानं स्तंभस्यानलवर्चसः । श्रांतः स सूकरहरिः प्राप पूर्वं रणांगणम् १८ ।
nA'pazyattasya saMsthAnaM staMbhasyAnalavarcasaH । zrAMtaH sa sUkarahariH prApa pUrvaM raNAMgaNam 18 ।
Utterly exhausted, Viṣṇu in the form of a Boar returned to the former battle-ground.

अथ गच्छंस्तु व्योम्ना च विधिस्तात पिता तव । ददर्श केतकी पुष्पं किंचिद्विच्युतमद्भुतम् १९ ।
atha gacchaMstu vyomnA ca vidhistAta pitA tava । dadarza ketakI puSpaM kiMcidvicyutamadbhutam 19 ।
Dear one, your father, Brahmā who went high up in the sky saw a certain bunch of Ketakī flower of mysterious nature falling from above.

अतिसौरभ्यमम्लानं बहुवर्षच्युतं तथा । अन्वीक्ष्य च तयोः कृत्यं भगवान्परमेश्वरः 1-7-२० ।
atisaurabhyamamlAnaM bahuvarSacyutaM tathA । anvIkSya ca tayoH kRtyaM bhagavAnparamezvaraH 1-7-20 ।
On seeing the mutual fight of Brahmā and Viṣṇu, lord Śiva laughed. When his head shook, the Ketakī flower dropped down.

परिहासं तु कृतवान्कंपनाच्चलितं शिरः । तस्मात्तावनुगृह्णातुं च्युतं केतकमुत्तमम् २१ ।
parihAsaM tu kRtavAnkaMpanAccalitaM ziraH । tasmAttAvanugRhNAtuM cyutaM ketakamuttamam 21 ।
Although it had been in its downward course for many years, neither its fragrance nor its lustre had been diminished even a bit. The flower had been intended to bless them.

किं त्वं पतसि पुष्पेश पुष्पराट् केन वा धृतम् । आदिमस्याप्रमेयस्य स्तंभमध्याच्च्युतश्चिरम् २२ ।
kiM tvaM patasi puSpeza puSparAT kena vA dhRtam । AdimasyAprameyasya staMbhamadhyAccyutazciram 22 ।
(Brahmā said) “O lord of flowers, by whom had you been worn? Why do you fall? I have come here to seek out the top, in the form of a swan.”

न संपश्यामि तस्मात्त्वं जह्याशामंतदर्शने । अस्यां तस्य च सेवार्थं हंसमूर्तिरिहागतः २३ ।
na saMpazyAmi tasmAttvaM jahyAzAmaMtadarzane । asyAM tasya ca sevArthaM haMsamUrtirihAgataH 23 ।
(The flower replied) “I am falling down from the middle of this primordial column that is inscrutable. It has taken me a long time. Hence I do not see how you can

इतः परं सखे मेऽद्य त्वया कर्तव्यमीप्सितम् । मया सह त्वया वाच्यमेतद्विष्णोश्च सन्निधौ २४ ।
itaH paraM sakhe me'dya tvayA kartavyamIpsitam । mayA saha tvayA vAcyametadviSNozca sannidhau 24 ।
Dear friend, hereafter you must do as I desire. In the presence of Viṣṇu you must say like this.
Vishweshwara-samhita - Chapter 7 - Verse 25

स्तंभांतो वीक्षितो धात्रा तत्र साक्ष्यहमच्युत । इत्युक्त्वा केतकं तत्र प्रणनाम पुनः नः । असत्यमपि शस्तं स्यादापदीत्यनुशासनम् २५॑!।
staMbhAMto vIkSito dhAtrA tatra sAkSyahamacyuta । ityuktvA ketakaM tatra praNanAma punaH naH । asatyamapi zastaM syAdApadItyanuzAsanam 25॑!।
O Acyuta, the top of the column has been seen by Brahmā. I am the witness for the same. Saying this he bowed to the Ketakī flower again and again. Even falsehood is recommended in times of danger. So say the authoritative texts.
Vishweshwara-samhita - Chapter 7 - Verse 26

समीक्ष्य तत्राऽच्युतमायतश्रमं प्रनष्टहर्षं तु ननर्त हर्षात् । उवाच चैनं परमार्थमच्युतं षंढात्तवादः स विधिस्ततोऽच्युतम् २६ ।
samIkSya tatrA'cyutamAyatazramaM pranaSTaharSaM tu nanarta harSAt । uvAca cainaM paramArthamacyutaM SaMDhAttavAdaH sa vidhistato'cyutam 26 ।
(Returning to the original place) on seeing Viṣṇu there, utterly exhausted and lacking pleasure, Brahmā danced with joy. Viṣṇu, in the manner of a eunuch admitting his inability(to a woman), told him the truth (that he could not see the bottom). But Brahmā told Viṣṇu like this.

स्तंभाग्रमेतत्समुदीक्षितं हरे तत्रैव साक्षी ननु केतकं त्विदम् । ततोऽवदत्तत्र हि केतकं मृषा तथेति तद्धातृवचस्तदंतिके २७ ।
staMbhAgrametatsamudIkSitaM hare tatraiva sAkSI nanu ketakaM tvidam । tato'vadattatra hi ketakaM mRSA tatheti taddhAtRvacastadaMtike 27 ।
“O Hari, the top of this column has been seen by me. This Ketakī flower is my witness.” The Ketaka flower repeated the falsehood endorsing the words of Brahmā in his presence.

हरिश्च तत्सत्यमितीव चिंतयंश्चकार तस्मै विधये नमः स्वयम् । षोडशैरुपचारैश्च पूजयामास तं विधिम् २८ ।
harizca tatsatyamitIva ciMtayaMzcakAra tasmai vidhaye namaH svayam । SoDazairupacAraizca pUjayAmAsa taM vidhim 28 ।
Hari, taking it to be true, made obeisance to Brahmā. He worshipped Brahmā with all the sixteen means of service and homage.

विधिं प्रहर्तुं शठमग्निलिंगतः स ईश्वरस्तत्र बभूव साकृतिः । समुत्थितः स्वामि विलोकनात्पुनः प्रकंपपाणिः परिगृह्य तत्पदम् २९ ।
vidhiM prahartuM zaThamagniliMgataH sa Izvarastatra babhUva sAkRtiH । samutthitaH svAmi vilokanAtpunaH prakaMpapANiH parigRhya tatpadam 29 ।
The Lord taking up a visible form in order to chastise Brahmā who practised trickery, came out of the column of fire. On seeing the lord, Viṣṇu stood up and with his hands shaking with fear caught hold of the lord’s feet.

आद्यंतहीनवपुषि त्वयि मोहबुद्ध्या भूयाद्विमर्श इह नावति कामनोत्थः । स त्वं प्रसीद करुणाकर कश्मलं नौ मृष्टं क्षमस्व विहितं भवतैव केल्या 1-7-३० ।
AdyaMtahInavapuSi tvayi mohabuddhyA bhUyAdvimarza iha nAvati kAmanotthaH । sa tvaM prasIda karuNAkara kazmalaM nau mRSTaM kSamasva vihitaM bhavataiva kelyA 1-7-30 ।
It is out of ignorance and delusion about you whose body is without a beginning or an end that we indulged in this quest prompted by our own desire. Hence O, Sympathetic Being, forgive us for our fault. In fact, it is but another form of your divine sport.

ईश्वर उवाच । वत्सप्रसन्नोऽस्मि हरे यतस्त्वमीशत्वमिच्छन्नपि सत्यवाक्यम् । ब्रूयास्ततस्ते भविता जनेषु साम्यं मया सत्कृतिरप्यलप्थाः ३१ ।
Izvara uvAca । vatsaprasanno'smi hare yatastvamIzatvamicchannapi satyavAkyam । brUyAstataste bhavitA janeSu sAmyaM mayA satkRtirapyalapthAH 31 ।
Īśvara said: “O dear Hari, I am pleased with you, because you strictly adhered to truth in spite of your desire to be a lord. Hence among the general public you will have a footing equal to mine. You will be honoured too likewise."
Vishweshwara-samhita - Chapter 7 - Verse 32

इतः परं ते पृथगात्मनश्च क्षेत्रप्रतिष्ठोत्सवपूजनं च ३२ ।
itaH paraM te pRthagAtmanazca kSetrapratiSThotsavapUjanaM ca 32 ।
Hereafter you will be separate from me having separate temple, installation of idols, festivals and worship.

इति देवः पुरा प्रीतः सत्येन हरये परम् । ददौ स्वसाम्यमत्यर्थं देवसंघे च पश्यति ३३ ।
iti devaH purA prItaH satyena haraye param । dadau svasAmyamatyarthaM devasaMghe ca pazyati 33 ।
Thus, formerly, the lord was delighted by the truthfulness of Hari and offered him a footing equal to his own even as the assembly of the devas was witnessing the same.
