naMdikezvara uvAca । purA kadAcidyogIMdra viSNurviSadharAsanaH । suSvApa parayA bhUtyA svAnugairapi saMvRtaH 1 ।
Nandikeśvara said: Once, long ago, O foremost among Yogins, Viṣṇu was having his nap on his serpent-couch. He was surrounded by the goddess of fortune and his attendants.

यदृच्छया गतस्तत्र ब्रह्मा ब्रह्मविदांवरः । अपृच्छत्पुंडरीकाक्षं शयनं सर्वसुन्दरम् २ ।
yadRcchayA gatastatra brahmA brahmavidAMvaraH । apRcchatpuMDarIkAkSaM zayanaM sarvasundaram 2 ।
Brahmā, the foremost among the Vedic scholars chanced to come there. He asked the lotus-eyed handsome Viṣṇu who was lying there.

कस्त्वं पुरुषवच्छेषे दृष्ट्वा मामपि दृप्तवत् । उत्तिष्ठ वत्स मां पश्य तव नाथमिहागतम् ३ ।
kastvaM puruSavaccheSe dRSTvA mAmapi dRptavat । uttiSTha vatsa mAM pazya tava nAthamihAgatam 3 ।
Who are you lying here like a haughty person even after seeing me? Get up, O dear, and see me who am your lord. I have come here.

आगतं गुरुमाराध्यं दृष्ट्वा यो दृप्तवच्चरेत् । द्रो हिणस्तस्य मूढस्य प्रायश्चित्तं विधीयते ४ ।
AgataM gurumArAdhyaM dRSTvA yo dRptavaccaret । dro hiNastasya mUDhasya prAyazcittaM vidhIyate 4 ।
Expiatory rites are ordained for that spiteful wretch who behaves like a haughty fool at the visit of an honourable elderly person.

इति श्रुत्वा वचः क्रुद्धो बहिः शांतवदाचरत् । स्वस्ति ते स्वागतं वत्स तिष्ठ पीठमितो विश ५ ।
iti zrutvA vacaH kruddho bahiH zAMtavadAcarat । svasti te svAgataM vatsa tiSTha pIThamito viza 5 ।
On hearing these words Viṣṇu was angry. But assuming a calm exterior he said—“O dear, Hail thee. Welcome. Please sit on this couch. How is it that thy face is agitated and thy eyes look curious?"

किमु ते व्याघ्रवद्वक्त्रं विभाति विषमेक्षणम् । ब्रह्मोवाच । वत्स विष्णो महामानमागतं कालवेगतः ६ ।
kimu te vyAghravadvaktraM vibhAti viSamekSaNam । brahmovAca । vatsa viSNo mahAmAnamAgataM kAlavegataH 6 ।
Brahmā said: Dear Viṣṇu, know me to have come with the speed of the Time. I am to be honoured greatly. O dear one, I the protector of the world, Grandfather, your protector as well.

पितामहश्च जगतः पाता च तव वत्सक । विष्णुरुवाच । मत्स्थं जगदिदं वत्स मनुषे त्वं हि चोरवत् ७ ।
pitAmahazca jagataH pAtA ca tava vatsaka । viSNuruvAca । matsthaM jagadidaM vatsa manuSe tvaM hi coravat 7 ।
O dear one, the whole universe is situated within me but your way of thinking is like that of a thief. You are born of the lotus sprung from my navel-region. You are my son. Your words are futile therefore.

किमु ते व्याघ्रवद्वक्त्रं विभाति विषमेक्षणम् । ब्रह्मोवाच । वत्स विष्णो महामानमागतं कालवेगतः ६ ।
kimu te vyAghravadvaktraM vibhAti viSamekSaNam । brahmovAca । vatsa viSNo mahAmAnamAgataM kAlavegataH 6 ।
What is this, your face resembling that of a tiger, with fierce eyes? Lord Brahma said: 'O child, the great form of Vishnu has arrived swiftly with the speed of time.'

अहमेव वरो न त्वमहं प्रभुरहं प्रभुः । परस्परं हंतुकामौ चक्रतुः समरोद्यमम् ९ ।
ahameva varo na tvamahaM prabhurahaM prabhuH । parasparaM haMtukAmau cakratuH samarodyamam 9 ।
I alone am the supreme boon, not you; I am the Lord, and I am the Lord, Both of us, desiring to defeat each other, engaged in a mighty battle.

युयुधातेऽमरौ वीरौ हंसपक्षींद्र वाहनौ । वैरंच्या वैष्णवाश्चैवं मिथो युयुधिरे तदा 1-6-१० ।
yuyudhAte'marau vIrau haMsapakSIMdra vAhanau । vairaMcyA vaiSNavAzcaivaM mitho yuyudhire tadA 1-6-10 ।
The celestial warriors, who were mighty and rode on swan-like vehicles, Fought with each other, with the Vaishnavas and others engaged in a fierce conflict.

तावद्विमानगतयः सर्वा वै देवजातयः । दिदृक्षवः समाजग्मुः समरं तं महाद्भुतम् ११ ।
tAvadvimAnagatayaH sarvA vai devajAtayaH । didRkSavaH samAjagmuH samaraM taM mahAdbhutam 11 ।
In the meantime the different groups of Devas moving about in aerial chariots came there to witness the wonderful fight.

क्षिपंतः पुष्पवर्षाणि पश्यंतः स्वैरमंबरे । सुपर्णवाहनस्तत्र क्रुद्धो वै ब्रह्मवक्षसि १२ ।
kSipaMtaH puSpavarSANi pazyaMtaH svairamaMbare । suparNavAhanastatra kruddho vai brahmavakSasi 12 ।
While showering flowers and observing freely in the sky, The one riding the Suparṇa (Garuda), enraged, aimed at Brahma's chest.

मुमोच बाणानसहानस्त्रांश्च विविधान्बहून् । मुमोचाऽथ विधिः क्रुद्धो विष्णोरुरसि दुःसहान् १३ ।
mumoca bANAnasahAnastrAMzca vividhAnbahUn । mumocA'tha vidhiH kruddho viSNorurasi duHsahAn 13 ।
He released countless arrows, unbearable and varied, Then, enraged, he released a powerful weapon aimed at Vishnu's chest.

तावद्विमानगतयः सर्वा वै देवजातयः । दिदृक्षवः समाजग्मुः समरं तं महाद्भुतम् ११ ।
tAvadvimAnagatayaH sarvA vai devajAtayaH । didRkSavaH samAjagmuH samaraM taM mahAdbhutam 11 ।
All the divine beings, traveling in their celestial chariots, Desiring to witness the grand battle, gathered to see that magnificent war.

समीक्ष्य दैवतगणाः शशंसुर्भृशमाकुलाः । ततो विष्णुः सुसंक्रुद्धः श्वसन्व्यसनकर्शितः १५ ।
samIkSya daivatagaNAH zazaMsurbhRzamAkulAH । tato viSNuH susaMkruddhaH zvasanvyasanakarzitaH 15 ।
Seeing this, the gods praised the event with great excitement, Then Vishnu, greatly enraged, exhaled deeply, his body strained by distress.

माहेश्वरास्त्रं मतिमान् संदधे ब्रह्मणोपरि । ततो ब्रह्मा भृशं क्रुद्धः कंपयन्विश्वमेव हि १६ ।
mAhezvarAstraM matimAn saMdadhe brahmaNopari । tato brahmA bhRzaM kruddhaH kaMpayanvizvameva hi 16 ।
The wise one placed the Māheśvara weapon upon Brahma's head, Then Brahma, greatly enraged, caused the entire universe to tremble.

अस्त्रं पाशुपतं घोरं संदधे विष्णुवक्षसि । ततस्तदुत्थितं व्योम्नि तपनायुतसन्निभम् १७ ।
astraM pAzupataM ghoraM saMdadhe viSNuvakSasi । tatastadutthitaM vyomni tapanAyutasannibham 17 ।
He placed the fearsome Pāśupata weapon upon Vishnu's chest, Then it arose in the sky, resembling the sun with countless rays.

सहस्रमुखमत्युग्रं चंडवातभयंकरम् । अस्त्रद्वयमिदं तत्र ब्रह्मविष्ण्वोर्भयंकरम् १८ ।
sahasramukhamatyugraM caMDavAtabhayaMkaram । astradvayamidaM tatra brahmaviSNvorbhayaMkaram 18 ।
The weapon rising high in the sky blazing like ten thousand suns, with thousands of terrible pointed spikes roared awfully like a gust of wind. These two weapons of Brahmā and Viṣṇu thus faced each other in a terrible clash.

इत्थं बभूव समरो ब्रह्मविष्ण्वोः परस्परम् । ततो देवगणाः सर्वे विषण्णा भृशमाकुलाः । ऊचुः परस्परं तात राजक्षोभे यथा द्विजाः १९।
itthaM babhUva samaro brahmaviSNvoH parasparam । tato devagaNAH sarve viSaNNA bhRzamAkulAH । UcuH parasparaM tAta rAjakSobhe yathA dvijAH 19।
Such was the mutual fight between Brahmā and Viṣṇu. Then, O dear, the devas in their helpless agitation and vexation talked among themselves as people do at the time of war between their monarchs.

सृष्टिः स्थितिश्च संहारस्तिरो भावोप्यनुग्रहः । यस्मात्प्रवर्तते तस्मै ब्रह्मणे च त्रिशूलिने 1-6-२० ।
sRSTiH sthitizca saMhArastiro bhAvopyanugrahaH । yasmAtpravartate tasmai brahmaNe ca trizUline 1-6-20 ।
The three-pointed-trident-bearing deity, the supreme Brahman, (i.e. Śiva) is the cause of creation, maintenance, annihilation, concealment and blessing.

अशक्यमन्यैर्यदनुग्रहं विना तृणक्षयोप्यत्र यदृच्छया क्वचित् 21।
azakyamanyairyadanugrahaM vinA tRNakSayopyatra yadRcchayA kvacit 21।
Without His corroboration even a blade of grass cannot be split by any individual anywhere.

इति देवाभयं कृत्वा विचिन्वंतः शिवक्षयम् । जग्मुः कैलासशिखरं यत्रास्ते चंद्र शेखरः २२ ।
iti devAbhayaM kRtvA vicinvaMtaH zivakSayam । jagmuH kailAsazikharaM yatrAste caMdra zekharaH 22 ।
Thinking thus in their fright they desired to go to Śiva’s abode and accordingly came to the summit of Kailāsa where the moon-crested God resided.

दृष्ट्वैवममरा हृष्टाः पदंतत्पारमेश्वरम् । प्रणेमुः प्रणवाकारं प्रविष्टास्तत्र सद्मनि २३ ।
dRSTvaivamamarA hRSTAH padaMtatpAramezvaram । praNemuH praNavAkAraM praviSTAstatra sadmani 23 ।
On seeing that region of Parameśvara in the shape of Oṃkāra they bent their heads down in reverence and entered the palace.

तेपि तत्र सभामध्ये मंडपे मणिविष्टरे । विराजमानमुमया ददृशुर्देवपुंगवम् २४ ।
tepi tatra sabhAmadhye maMDape maNiviSTare । virAjamAnamumayA dadRzurdevapuMgavam 24 ।
There they saw the supreme leader of the Devas brilliantly shining on the gem-set seat in the company of Umā on an altar in the middle of the council-chamber.

सव्योत्तरेतरपदं तदर्हितकरां बुजम् । स्वगणैः सर्वतो जुष्टं सर्वलक्षणलक्षितम् २५ ।
savyottaretarapadaM tadarhitakarAM bujam । svagaNaiH sarvato juSTaM sarvalakSaNalakSitam 25 ।
His right leg was kept over the knee of the left; his lotus-like hands were placed over the legs; his attendants were all round him. He had all good characteristic features.

वीज्यमानं विशेषजैः स्त्रीजनैस्तीव्रभावनैः । शस्यमानं सदावेदैरनुगृह्णंतमीश्वरम् २६ ।
vIjyamAnaM vizeSajaiH strIjanaistIvrabhAvanaiH । zasyamAnaM sadAvedairanugRhNaMtamIzvaram 26 ।
He was being fanned by the specialists in that art—ladies of pointed attention. The Vedas were extolling Him. The lord was blessing every one.

दृष्ट्वैवमीशममराः संतोषसलिलेक्षणाः । दंडवद्दूरतो वत्स नमश्चक्रुर्महागणाः २७ ।
dRSTvaivamIzamamarAH saMtoSasalilekSaNAH । daMDavaddUrato vatsa namazcakrurmahAgaNAH 27 ।
On seeing the lord thus, the Devas shed tears of joy. O dear one, the hosts of Devas knelt down even from a great distance.

तानवेक्ष्य पतिर्देवान्समीपे चाह्वयद्गणैः । अथ संह्लादयन्देवान्देवो देवशिखामणिः । अवोचदर्थगंभीरं वचनं मधुमंगलम् २८॑!।
tAnavekSya patirdevAnsamIpe cAhvayadgaNaiH । atha saMhlAdayandevAndevo devazikhAmaNiH । avocadarthagaMbhIraM vacanaM madhumaMgalam 28॑!।
The lord, on seeing the Devas, beckoned them to him through his attendants. Then causing the delight of the Devas, the crest-jewel of Devas (i.e. Śiva), addressed them gravely with sweet auspicious words.
