vyAsa uvAca । ityAkarNya vacaH sautaM procuste paramarSayaH । vedAMtasArasarvasvaM purANaM zrAvayAdbhutam 1 ।
Vyāsa said: On hearing the words of Sūta, the great sages said, “Please narrate the wonderful Purāṇa that fully treats of the essence of Vedānta”.

इति श्रुत्वा मुनीनां स वचनं सुप्रहर्षितः । संस्मरञ्छंकरं सूतः प्रोवाच मुनिसत्तमान् २ ।
iti zrutvA munInAM sa vacanaM supraharSitaH । saMsmaraJchaMkaraM sUtaH provAca munisattamAn 2 ।
Very delighted at the request of the sages Sūta meditated on Śiva and spoke to them.

सूत उवाच । शृण्वंतु ऋषयः सर्वे स्मृत्वा शिवमनामयम् । पुराणप्रवणं शैवं पुराणं वेदसारजम् ३ ।
sUta uvAca । zRNvaMtu RSayaH sarve smRtvA zivamanAmayam । purANapravaNaM zaivaM purANaM vedasArajam 3 ।
Sūta said: Contemplating on Śiva free from ailments may ye all hear this Śivapurāṇa, the foremost among Purāṇas, that amplifies the essence of the Vedas.

यत्र गीतं त्रिकं प्रीत्या भक्तिज्ञानविरागकम् ४ ।
yatra gItaM trikaM prItyA bhaktijJAnavirAgakam 4 ।
Where the trio, Bhakti (Piety) Jñāna (Wisdom) and Vairāgya (non-attachment) has been proclaimed.

vedAMtavedyaM sadvastu vizeSeNa pravarNitam 5 ।
The object which is knowable only through Vedānta, has been particularly described.

सूत उवाच । शृण्वंतु ऋषयः सर्वे पुराणं वेदसारजम् । पुरा कालेन महता कल्पेऽतीते पुनःपुनः ६ ।
sUta uvAca । zRNvaMtu RSayaH sarve purANaM vedasArajam । purA kAlena mahatA kalpe'tIte punaHpunaH 6 ।
Sūta said: Let all the sages listen to the Purāṇa, which is the essence of the Vedas, From ancient times, in great epochs, it has been repeated again and again.

अस्मिन्नुपस्थिते कल्पे प्रवृत्ते सृष्टिकर्मणि । मुनीनां षट्कुलीनानां ब्रुवतामितरेतरम् ७ ।
asminnupasthite kalpe pravRtte sRSTikarmaNi । munInAM SaTkulInAnAM bruvatAmitaretaram 7 ।
In this particular cycle, when the process of creation begins, The sages of the six lineages (ṣaṭkulīna) are speaking to one another.

इदं परमिदं नेति विवादः सुमहानभूत् । तेऽभिजग्मुर्विधातारं ब्रह्माणं प्रष्टुमव्ययम् ८ ।
idaM paramidaM neti vivAdaH sumahAnabhUt । te'bhijagmurvidhAtAraM brahmANaM praSTumavyayam 8 ।
This is the supreme, no, this is not the supreme—such a great debate arose, They approached the Creator, Brahman, to question Him, the Imperishable.

वाग्भिर्विनयगर्भाभिः सर्वे प्रांजलयोऽब्रुवन् । त्वं हि सर्वजगद्धाता सर्वकारणकारणम् ९ ।
vAgbhirvinayagarbhAbhiH sarve prAMjalayo'bruvan । tvaM hi sarvajagaddhAtA sarvakAraNakAraNam 9 ।
All of them with palms joined in reverence addressed him with words couched in humility—“Thou art the creator of the entire universe, the cause of all causes.

कः पुमान्सर्वतत्त्वेभ्यः पुराणः परतः परः । ब्रह्मोवाच । यतो वाचो निवर्तंते अप्राप्य मनसा सह 1-3-१० ।
kaH pumAnsarvatattvebhyaH purANaH parataH paraH । brahmovAca । yato vAco nivartaMte aprApya manasA saha 1-3-10 ।
Who is the person beyond all principles and the highest of the Purāṇas, the one who transcends all?" Brahma said: "From where speech (vāk) returns, unable to reach, along with the mind, that is the supreme.

यस्मात्सर्वमिदं ब्रह्मविष्णुरुद्रे द्रं! पूर्वकम् । सहभूतेंद्रि यैः सर्वैः प्रथमं संप्रसूयते ११ ।
yasmAtsarvamidaM brahmaviSNurudre draM! pUrvakam । sahabhUteMdri yaiH sarvaiH prathamaM saMprasUyate 11 ।
From which all this creation, Brahma, Vishnu, and Rudra emerge in their forms, Along with all the senses and elements, creation is first initiated.

एष देवो महादेवः सर्वज्ञो जगदीश्वरः । अयं तु परया भक्त्या दृश्यते नाऽन्यथा क्वचित् १२ ।
eSa devo mahAdevaH sarvajJo jagadIzvaraH । ayaM tu parayA bhaktyA dRzyate nA'nyathA kvacit 12 ।
This deity is the great Lord (Mahādeva), the all-knowing, the Lord of the universe, He is seen only through supreme devotion, and not otherwise anywhere.

रुद्रो हरिर्हरश्चैव तथान्ये च सुरेश्वराः । भक्त्या परमया तस्य नित्यं दर्शनकांक्षिणः १३ ।
rudro harirharazcaiva tathAnye ca surezvarAH । bhaktyA paramayA tasya nityaM darzanakAMkSiNaH 13 ।
Rudra, Hari, Hara and other lords of Devas are ever desirous of seeing Him, moved by great devotion.

बहुनात्र किमुक्तेन शिवे भक्त्या विमुच्यते। प्रसादाद्देवताभक्तिः प्रसादो भक्तिसंभवः । यथेहांकुरतो बीजं बीजतो वा यथांकुरः १४।
bahunAtra kimuktena zive bhaktyA vimucyate। prasAdAddevatAbhaktiH prasAdo bhaktisaMbhavaH । yathehAMkurato bIjaM bIjato vA yathAMkuraH 14।
Of what avail is a verbose statement? One is liberated by devotion unto Śiva. Devotion to the deity is due to His Grace; and His grace is due to devotion just as the seed gives rise to the sprout and the sprout produces the seed.

तस्मादीशप्रसादार्थं यूयं गत्वा भुवं द्विजाः । दीर्घसत्रं समाकृध्वं यूयं वर्षसहस्रकम् १५ ।
tasmAdIzaprasAdArthaM yUyaM gatvA bhuvaM dvijAH । dIrghasatraM samAkRdhvaM yUyaM varSasahasrakam 15 ।
Hence, O Brahmins, all of you descend to the earth, to propitiate the Lord. You have to perform a sacrifice of long duration for a thousand years.

अमुष्यैवाध्वरेशस्य शिवस्यैव प्रसादतः । वेदोक्तविद्यासारं तु ज्ञायते साध्यसाधनं १६ ।
amuSyaivAdhvarezasya zivasyaiva prasAdataH । vedoktavidyAsAraM tu jJAyate sAdhyasAdhanaM 16 ।
It is by the grace of Śiva alone who will be the presiding deity of this sacrifice that the means of achievement of the Achievable can be realised and that is the essence of the Vidyā (mystic learning) mentioned in the Vedas.

मुनय ऊचुः । अथ किं परमं साध्यं किंवा तत्साधनं परम् । साधकः कीदृशस्तत्र तदिदं ब्रूहि तत्त्वतः १७ ।
munaya UcuH । atha kiM paramaM sAdhyaM kiMvA tatsAdhanaM param । sAdhakaH kIdRzastatra tadidaM brUhi tattvataH 17 ।
The sages said: What is that great Achievable? What is that great means of achievement? Of what sort is the performer of the rite? Please mention these precisely.

ब्रह्मोवाच । साध्यं शिवपदप्राप्तिः साधनं तस्य सेवनम् । साधकस्तत्प्रसादाद्योऽनित्यादिफलनिःस्पृहः १८ ।
brahmovAca । sAdhyaM zivapadaprAptiH sAdhanaM tasya sevanam । sAdhakastatprasAdAdyo'nityAdiphalaniHspRhaH 18 ।
Brahmā said: The attainment of Śiva’s region is the Achievable. Means of achievement is the service rendered unto Him. Sādhaka (the performer of the rite) is the person who is free from desire even for permanence which attitude is the result of His grace.

कर्म कृत्वा तु वेदोक्तं तदर्पितमहाफलम् । परमेशपदप्राप्तः सालोक्यादिक्रमात्ततः १९ ।
karma kRtvA tu vedoktaM tadarpitamahAphalam । paramezapadaprAptaH sAlokyAdikramAttataH 19 ।
Rites mentioned in the Vedas should be performed with the fruits thereof dedicated to Him. Thence, through Sālokya he attains the feet of the great Lord.

तत्तद्भक्त्यनुसारेण सर्वेषां परमं फलम् । तत्साधनं बहुविधं साक्षादीशेन बोधितम् 1-3-२० ।
tattadbhaktyanusAreNa sarveSAM paramaM phalam । tatsAdhanaM bahuvidhaM sAkSAdIzena bodhitam 1-3-20 ।
All attain the great fruit according to the standard in devotion achieved. The ways of achieving these standards are manifold as expounded by Isa Himself.

संक्षिप्य तत्र वः सारं साधनं प्रब्रवीम्यहम् । श्रोत्रेण श्रवणं तस्य वचसा कीर्तनं तथा २१ ।
saMkSipya tatra vaH sAraM sAdhanaM prabravImyaham । zrotreNa zravaNaM tasya vacasA kIrtanaM tathA 21 ।
I shall condense the same and tell you the essential means. Listening to the glory of Śiva, glorifying him by means of words, and deliberation in the mind, these constitute the greatest of the means.

मनसा मननं तस्य महासाधनमुच्यते । श्रोतव्यः कीर्तितव्यश्च मन्तव्यश्च महेश्वरः २२ ।
manasA mananaM tasya mahAsAdhanamucyate । zrotavyaH kIrtitavyazca mantavyazca mahezvaraH 22 ।
Maheśvara is to be heard, glorified and meditated upon.

इति श्रुतिप्रमाणं नः साधनेनाऽमुना परम् । साध्यं व्रजत सर्वार्थसाधनैकपरायणाः २३ ।
iti zrutipramANaM naH sAdhanenA'munA param । sAdhyaM vrajata sarvArthasAdhanaikaparAyaNAH 23 ।
Thus Śruti is our authority. Resorting solely to this great means, all of you attain the Achievable.

प्रत्यक्षं चक्षुषा दृष्ट्वा तत्र लोकः प्रवर्तते । अप्रत्यक्षं हि सर्वत्र ज्ञात्वा श्रोत्रेण चेष्टते २४ ।
pratyakSaM cakSuSA dRSTvA tatra lokaH pravartate । apratyakSaM hi sarvatra jJAtvA zrotreNa ceSTate 24 ।
Regarding visible things people see with their eyes and begin their activity. Concerning the invisible everywhere, they know through the ears and activise themselves.

तस्माच्छ्रवणमेवादौ श्रुत्वा गुरुमुखाद्बुधः । ततः संसाधयेदन्यत्कीर्तनं मननं सुधीः २५ ।
tasmAcchravaNamevAdau zrutvA gurumukhAdbudhaH । tataH saMsAdhayedanyatkIrtanaM mananaM sudhIH 25 ।
Hence Śravaṇa (listening) is the first rite. The intelligent scholar must listen to the oral explanation of the preceptor and then practise the other rites.—Kīrtana (glorifying) and Manana (deliberation).

क्रमान्मननपर्यंते साधनेऽस्मिन्सुसाधिते । शिवयोगो भवेत्तेन सालोक्यादिक्रमाच्छनैः २६ ।
kramAnmananaparyaMte sAdhane'sminsusAdhite । zivayogo bhavettena sAlokyAdikramAcchanaiH 26 ।
When all the means upto Manana are well exercised, Śivayoga (unification with Śiva) results gradually through Sālokya etc.

सर्वांगव्याधयः पश्चात्सर्वानंदश्च लीयते । अभ्यासात्क्लेशमेतद्वै पश्चादाद्यंतमंगलम् २७ ।
sarvAMgavyAdhayaH pazcAtsarvAnaMdazca lIyate । abhyAsAtklezametadvai pazcAdAdyaMtamaMgalam 27 ।
All the ailments of the body are nullified and supreme bliss is realised. Painful indeed is the process but later on everything becomes auspicious from beginning to end.
