Sūta said:— There is a lake known as Skandasaras as vast as the ocean. It has nectar-like sweet cool water, deep, clean and light.

Crystal slabs are neatly fixed all around. The place abounds in blooming flowers in the seasons throughout.

Lilies, lotuses and other aquatic plants resemble the stars. The waves are like clouds. The sky itself appears to have come to the earth.

sukhAvataraNArohaiH sthalairnIlazilAmayaiH ॥ sopAnamArgau ruciraizzobhamAnASTadiGmukham ॥ 4 ॥
The steps that lead to it consist of blue stones and are beautiful. People can ascend and descend comfortably. Through these the lake brightens all the eight quarters.

They descended from that place and crossed it in great numbers. They were bathed and dressed in white sashes and white robes and bark garments.

jaTAzikhAyanairmuMDaistripuMDrakRtamaMDanaiH ॥ virAgavivazasmeramukhairmunikumArakaiH ॥ 6 ॥
They wore matted hair and headdresses and adorned themselves with tripuṇḍras. The young sages with smiling faces forced by detachment.

There were pots with lotus leaf bags and auspicious urns. with waterpots and other such things like pots and pans.

AtmArthaM ca parArthaM ca devatArthaM vizeSataH ॥ AnIyamAnasalilamAttapuSpaM ca nityazaH ॥ 8 ॥
For one’s own sake, for the sake of others, and especially for the sake of the demigods. Water and flowers were brought daily.

They climbed rocks in the water, fearing to touch the lowly ones. They were burnt with ashes and incense by the sages who were well-mannered.

itastato 'psu majjadbhiriSTaziSTaiH zilAgataiH ॥ tilaizca sAkSataiH puSpaistyaktadarbhapavitrakaiH ॥ 10 ॥
Here and there the remains of the rocks were drowning in the water. Sesame seeds, incense, flowers, abandoned darbha and pavitraka were offered.

After completing the ritualistic ceremonies performed by the demigods and sages, One should inform the learned brāhmaṇas who have taken daily baths.

They offered many sacrifices and flowers in various places. They performed worship and other rituals on the grounds before offering the solar arghya.

Sometimes the leader of the elephants was drowning in the river. Sometimes a deer or a horse came thirsty.

Sometimes a yellow-haired peacock crossed the river. Sometimes it was bright like a bull against a bull hit by a bank.

Sometimes the young ducks and sometimes the cranes chirped. Sometimes the sound of cockroaches and sometimes the songs of bees.

They lived on their own trees by bathing and drinking. He seemed to be talking to the creatures out of love.

The crests of the trunks and branches were covered with the crowd of cuckoos. Day and night he invited all those who were struck by the heat.

On the northern bank of the lake is the Kalpataru tree. The altar was made of diamond stone and soft deer skin.

Sanat-kumāra was seated there, always assuming the form of a child. That moment of self-motion ceased in trance.

He was worshiped by the great sages and great mystics. The inhabitants of Naimisha saw him and stood prostrate before him.

yAvatpRSTavate tasmai procuH svAgatakAraNam ॥ tumulaH zuzruve tAvaddivi duMdubhinisvanaH ॥ 21 ॥
On being asked they told him the purpose of their visit. The tumultuous sound of Dundubhi was heard in the heaven immediately.

At that moment he saw an aerial chariot resembling the sun. It was surrounded on all sides by innumerable lords of the Ganas.

It was crowded with hosts of nymphs and surrounded by the daughters of Lord Śiva. The sound of drums and horns was accompanied by the sound of flutes and veenas.

It was adorned with a canopy of colorful gems and decorated with pearl strings. sages siddhas gandharvas yakshas charanas and kinnaras.

nRtyadbhizcaiva gAyadbhirvAdayadbhizca saMvRtam ॥ vIragovRSacihnena vidramadrumayaSTinA ॥ 25 ॥
It was surrounded by people dancing, singing and playing musical instruments. He was marked with a heroic cow and bull and a wooden stick with a wooden stick.

It was as if the command of the creator of the universe had come without delay. All grace is as if Lord Śiva himself is standing before you.

The son of Shilada was directly armed with a beautiful trident and a great weapon. He was the chief of the hosts of the Lords of the universe and was like another Lord of the universe.

vizvasyApi vidhAtHNAM nigrahAnugrahakSamam ॥ caturbAhumudArAMgaM candrarekhAvibhUSitam ॥ 31 ॥
It is capable of subduing and showing mercy to the creators of the universe. He had four arms and a generous body and was decorated with the lines of the moon.

kaMThe nAgena maulau ca zazAMkenApyalaMkRtam ॥ savigrahamivaizvaryaM sAmarthyamiva sakriyam ॥ 32 ॥
It was decorated with a serpent around its neck and a moon on its crown. It is as active as wealth and power with conflict.

समाप्तमिव निर्वाणं सर्वज्ञमिव संगतम् ॥ दृष्ट्वा प्रहृष्टवदनो ब्रह्मपुत्रः सहर्षिभिः ॥ ३३ ॥
samAptamiva nirvANaM sarvajJamiva saMgatam ॥ dRSTvA prahRSTavadano brahmaputraH saharSibhiH ॥ 33 ॥
It was as if Nirvana had been completed and it was as if it had attained the omniscient. Seeing this the son of Brahma with a cheerful face along with the sages.

तस्थौ प्राञ्जलिरुत्थाय तस्यात्मानमिवार्पयन् ॥ अथ तत्रांतरे तस्मिन्विमाने चावनिं गते ॥ ३४ ॥
tasthau prAJjalirutthAya tasyAtmAnamivArpayan ॥ atha tatrAMtare tasminvimAne cAvaniM gate ॥ 34 ॥
He stood there, standing up with folded hands, as if offering himself to the Lord. Then, in the meantime, he went down in that plane.

प्रणम्य दण्डवद्देवं स्तुत्वा व्यज्ञापयन्मुनीम् ॥ षट्कुलीया इमे दीर्घं नैमिषे सत्रमास्थिताः ॥ आगता ब्रह्मणादिष्टाः पूर्वमेवाभिकांक्षया ॥ ३५ ॥
praNamya daNDavaddevaM stutvA vyajJApayanmunIm ॥ SaTkulIyA ime dIrghaM naimiSe satramAsthitAH ॥ AgatA brahmaNAdiSTAH pUrvamevAbhikAMkSayA ॥ 35 ॥
He bowed down to the Lord like a rod, praised Him and instructed the sage. These six dynasties have been performing sacrifices in the city of Naimiṣa for a long time. They had already arrived at the behest of Brahma.

श्रुत्वा वाक्यं ब्रह्मपुत्रस्य नंदीछित्त्वा पाशान्दृष्टिपातेन सद्यः ॥ शैवं धर्मं चैश्वरं ज्ञानयोगं दत्त्वा भूयो देवपार्श्वं जगाम ॥ ३६ ॥
zrutvA vAkyaM brahmaputrasya naMdIchittvA pAzAndRSTipAtena sadyaH ॥ zaivaM dharmaM caizvaraM jJAnayogaM dattvA bhUyo devapArzvaM jagAma ॥ 36 ॥
On hearing the words of the son of Brahma Nandi immediately cut the ropes with a glance After giving him the Shiva Dharma and the Lord's Yoga of Knowledge he again went to the side of the gods.

sanatkumAreNa ca tatsamastaM vyAsAya sAkSAdgurave mamoktam ॥ vyAsena coktaM mahitena mahyaM mayA ca tadvaH kathitaM samAsAt ॥ 37 ॥
Everything was imparted by Sanatkumāra to Vyāsa my direct preceptor who imparted the same to me and now I succinctly mention this to you.

नावेदविद्भ्यः कथनीयमेतत्पुराणरत्नं पुरशासनस्य ॥ नाभक्तशिष्याय च नास्तिकेभ्यो दत्तं हि मोहान्निरयं ददाति ॥ ३८ ॥
nAvedavidbhyaH kathanIyametatpurANaratnaM purazAsanasya ॥ nAbhaktaziSyAya ca nAstikebhyo dattaM hi mohAnnirayaM dadAti ॥ 38 ॥
This excellent gem of Śivapurāṇa should not be mentioned to those who do not know the Vedas, nor should it be imparted to a disciple who is not a devotee of Śiva nor to an atheist. If it is imparted to these out of delusion it yields hell.

मार्गेण सेवानुगतेन यैस्तद्दत्तं गृहीतं पठितं श्रुतं वा ॥ तेभ्यः सुखं धर्ममुखं त्रिवर्गं निर्वाणमंते नियतं ददाति ॥ ३९ ॥
mArgeNa sevAnugatena yaistaddattaM gRhItaM paThitaM zrutaM vA ॥ tebhyaH sukhaM dharmamukhaM trivargaM nirvANamaMte niyataM dadAti ॥ 39 ॥
If it is imparted, accepted, read or heard along the stipulated path accompanied by service it yields happiness, the three aims of life—Dharma, Artha, and Kāma and in the end, liberation invariably.

parasparasyopakRtaM bhavadbhirmayA ca paurANikamArgayogAt ॥ ato gamiSye 'hamavAptakAmaH samastamevAstu zivaM sadA naH ॥ 40 ॥
You and I have helped each other through this path. I have realised my desire. I shall go now. Let everything be auspicious to you always.

sUte kRtAziSi gate munayaH suvRttA yAge ca paryavasite mahati prayoge ॥ kAle kalau ca viSayaiH kaluSAyamANe vArANasIparisare vasatiM vinetuH ॥ 41 ॥
Then Sūta blessed them and left. The righteous sages fixed their abode permanently at the outskirts of Vārāṇasī after performing the sattra at Prayāga when they perceived that everything was being defiled by the advent of the Kali age.

atha ca te pazupAzamumukSayAkhilatayA kRtapAzupatavratAH ॥ adhikRtAkhilabodhasamAdhayaH paramanirvRtimApuraniMditAH ॥ 42 ॥
Then the sages performed the Pāśupata rites with the desire to get released from the bondage. They attained enlightenment. They learnt modes of Samādhi and achieved the greatest Bliss.

vyAsa uvAca ॥ etacchivapurANaM hi samAptaM hitamAdarAt ॥ paThitavyaM prayatnena zrotavyaM ca tathaiva hi ॥ 43 ॥
Vyāsa said:— This wholesome Śivapurāṇa is concluded now. It shall be read and heard assiduously.

नास्तिकाय न वक्तव्यमश्रद्धाय शठाय च ॥ अभक्ताय महेशस्य तथा धर्मध्वजाय च ॥ ४४ ॥
nAstikAya na vaktavyamazraddhAya zaThAya ca ॥ abhaktAya mahezasya tathA dharmadhvajAya ca ॥ 44 ॥
It shall not be mentioned to an atheist nor to one lacking in faith nor to a stubborn rogue nor to one who is not a devotee of Śiva nor to a religious hypocrite.

एतच्छ्रुत्या ह्येकवारं भवेत्पापं हि भस्मसात् ॥ अभक्तो भक्तिमाप्नोति भक्तो भक्तिसमृद्धिभाक् ॥ ४५ ॥
etacchrutyA hyekavAraM bhavetpApaM hi bhasmasAt ॥ abhakto bhaktimApnoti bhakto bhaktisamRddhibhAk ॥ 45 ॥
On hearing this once, the sins are reduced to ashes. A non-devotee attains devotion and a devotee attains more devotion.

पुनः श्रुते च सद्भक्तिर्मुक्तिस्स्याच्च श्रुतेः पुनः ॥ तस्मात्पुनःपुनश्चैव श्रोतव्यं हि मुमुक्षुभिः ॥ ४६ ॥
punaH zrute ca sadbhaktirmuktissyAcca zruteH punaH ॥ tasmAtpunaHpunazcaiva zrotavyaM hi mumukSubhiH ॥ 46 ॥
If it is heard again a further devotion is achieved. If it is heard again salvation is the result. Therefore it shall be heard over and again by those who desire salvation.

पञ्चावृत्तिः प्रकर्तव्या पुराणस्यास्य सद्धिया ॥ परं फलं समुद्दिश्य तत्प्राप्नोति न संशयः ॥ ४७ ॥
paJcAvRttiH prakartavyA purANasyAsya saddhiyA ॥ paraM phalaM samuddizya tatprApnoti na saMzayaH ॥ 47 ॥
If one aims at some big benefit one shall read or hear this Purāṇa five times with a pious mind. He is sure to achieve the desired result.

purAtanAzca rAjAno viprA vaizyAzca sattamAH ॥ saptakRtvastadAvRttyAlabhanta zivadarzanam ॥ 48 ॥
Kṣatriyas of yore, excellent brahmins and Vaiśyas repeated it seven times and attained the vision of Śiva.

zroSyatyathApi yazcedaM mAnavo bhaktitatparaH ॥ iha bhuktvAkhilAnbhogAnaMte muktiM labhecca saH ॥ 49 ॥
If a man with devotion hears it, he enjoys all pleasures here and secures liberation hereafter.

etacchivapurANaM hi zivasyAtipriyaM param ॥ bhuktimuktipradaM brahmasaMmitaM bhaktivardhanam ॥ 50 ॥
Śivapurāṇa is a great favourite of Śiva. It yields worldly pleasures and liberation. It increases devotion and it is on a par with the Vedas.

etacchivapurANasya vaktuH zrotuzca sarvadA ॥ sagaNassasutassAMbazzaM karotu sa zaMkaraH ॥ 51 ॥
May Śiva with his Gaṇas, sons and Ambā bestow blessings upon those who explain or listen to this Purāṇa.
