zrIkRSNa uvAca ॥ bhagavaMstvanmukhAdeva zrutaM zrutisamaM mayA ॥ svAzritAnAM zivaproktaM nityanaimittikaM tathA ॥ 1 ॥
Lord Kṛṣṇa said:— O holy lord, the compulsory and optional rites of those who depend on him, as mentioned by Śiva, have been heard by me from your mouth itself which is to be as much respected as the Vedas.

idAnIM zrotumicchAmi zivadharmAdhikAriNAm ॥ kAmyamapyasti cetkarma vaktumarhasi sAmpratam ॥ 2 ॥
Now I wish to hear if there is any Kāmya rite for those who are authorized in Śaivite rites. It behoves you to mention it.

उपमन्युरुवाच ॥ अस्त्यैहिकफलं किञ्चिदामुष्मिकफलं तथा ॥ ऐहिकामुष्मिकञ्चापि तच्च पञ्चविधं पुनः ॥ ३ ॥
upamanyuruvAca ॥ astyaihikaphalaM kiJcidAmuSmikaphalaM tathA ॥ aihikAmuSmikaJcApi tacca paJcavidhaM punaH ॥ 3 ॥
Upamanyu said:— There are some worldly fruits and some temporary fruits. Again there are five kinds of worldly and spiritual.

Some action is made up of action and some action is made up of austerity.

japadhyAnamayaM kiMcitkiMcitsarvamayaM tathA ॥ kriyAmayaM tathA bhinnaM homadAnArcanakramAt ॥ 5 ॥
Something is made up of chanting and meditation and something is made up of everything. It is also composed of rituals and is different from the order of sacrifice, charity and worship.

सर्वशक्तिमतामेव नान्येषां सफलं भवेत् ॥ शक्तिश्चाज्ञा मदेशस्य शिवस्य परमात्मनः ॥ ६ ॥
sarvazaktimatAmeva nAnyeSAM saphalaM bhavet ॥ zaktizcAjJA madezasya zivasya paramAtmanaH ॥ 6 ॥
The rites can be fruitful only for those who have all Śaktis. Śakti is the behest of Śiva the great Ātman.

तस्मात्काम्यानि कर्माणि कुर्यादाज्ञाधरोद्विजः ॥ अथ वक्ष्यामि काम्यं हि चेहामुत्र फलप्रदम् ॥ ७ ॥
tasmAtkAmyAni karmANi kuryAdAjJAdharodvijaH ॥ atha vakSyAmi kAmyaM hi cehAmutra phalapradam ॥ 7 ॥
Hence only the brahmin who upholds the behest shall perform the Kāmya rites. Now I shall mention the Kāmya rites yielding benefit.here and hereafter.

शैवैर्माहेश्वरैश्चैव कार्यमंतर्बहिः क्रमात् ॥ शिवो महेश्वरश्चेति नात्यंतमिह भिद्यते ॥ ८ ॥
zaivairmAhezvaraizcaiva kAryamaMtarbahiH kramAt ॥ zivo mahezvarazceti nAtyaMtamiha bhidyate ॥ 8 ॥
The Śivas and Maheśvaras should perform the rituals inside and outside one after another. There is no difference between Shiva and Maheshwara in this world.

यथा तथा न भिद्यंते शैवा माहेश्वरा अपि ॥ शिवाश्रिता हि ते शैवा ज्ञानयज्ञरता नराः ॥ ९ ॥
yathA tathA na bhidyaMte zaivA mAhezvarA api ॥ zivAzritA hi te zaivA jJAnayajJaratA narAH ॥ 9 ॥
Even the Śivas and Māheśvaras are not different from each other in the same way. Those Shiva men who take refuge in Shiva and are engaged in the sacrifice of knowledge.

माहेश्वरास्समाख्याता कर्मयज्ञरता भुवि ॥ तस्मादाभ्यन्तरे कुर्युः शैवा माहेश्वरा वहिः ॥ १० ॥
mAhezvarAssamAkhyAtA karmayajJaratA bhuvi ॥ tasmAdAbhyantare kuryuH zaivA mAhezvarA vahiH ॥ 10 ॥
On this earth the gods of Maheśvara are described as engaged in ritualistic sacrifices Therefore the Shivas and Maheshwaras should be placed inside and outside.

न तु प्रयोगो भिद्येत वक्ष्यमाणस्य कर्मणः ॥ परीक्ष्य भूमिं विधिवद्गंधवर्णरसादिभिः ॥ ११ ॥
na tu prayogo bhidyeta vakSyamANasya karmaNaH ॥ parIkSya bhUmiM vidhivadgaMdhavarNarasAdibhiH ॥ 11 ॥
But the experimentation does not differ from the action described. Examine the ground in accordance with the prescribed methods for fragrance, color, taste and so on.

मनोभिलषिते तत्र वितानविततांबरे ॥ सुप्रलिप्ते महीपृष्ठे दर्पणोदरसंनिभे ॥ १२ ॥
manobhilaSite tatra vitAnavitatAMbare ॥ supralipte mahIpRSThe darpaNodarasaMnibhe ॥ 12 ॥
There was a canopy spread over the sky, which was desired by the mind. It was well smeared on the ground and looked like a mirror belly.

प्राचीमुत्पादयेत्पूर्वं शास्त्रदृष्टेन वर्त्मना ॥ एकहस्तं द्विहस्तं वा मण्डलं परिकल्पयेत् ॥ १३ ॥
prAcImutpAdayetpUrvaM zAstradRSTena vartmanA ॥ ekahastaM dvihastaM vA maNDalaM parikalpayet ॥ 13 ॥
One should first produce the east according to the path prescribed in the scriptures. A circle of one or two hands should be arranged.

आलिखेद्विमलं पद्ममष्टपत्रं सकर्णिकम् ॥ रत्नहेमादिभिश्चूर्णैर्यथासंभवसंभृतैः ॥ १४ ॥
AlikhedvimalaM padmamaSTapatraM sakarNikam ॥ ratnahemAdibhizcUrNairyathAsaMbhavasaMbhRtaiH ॥ 14 ॥
He drew a clear lotus with eight petals and ears. They were filled with gems, gold and other powders as much as possible.

पञ्चावरणसंयुक्तं बहुशोभासमन्वितम् ॥ दलेषु सिद्धयः कल्प्याः केसरेषु सशक्तिकाः ॥ १५ ॥
paJcAvaraNasaMyuktaM bahuzobhAsamanvitam ॥ daleSu siddhayaH kalpyAH kesareSu sazaktikAH ॥ 15 ॥
It was composed of five covers and was very beautiful. Siddhis should be imagined in the petals and powerful in the saffrons.

रुद्रा वामादयस्त्वष्टौ पूर्वादिदलतः क्रमात् ॥ कर्णिकायां च वैराग्यं बीजेषु नव शक्तयः ॥ १६ ॥
rudrA vAmAdayastvaSTau pUrvAdidalataH kramAt ॥ karNikAyAM ca vairAgyaM bIjeSu nava zaktayaH ॥ 16 ॥
The eight Rudras, headed by Vāma, are placed in order from the east and the west. The nine energies in the ear and detachment in the seeds.

स्कन्दे शिवात्मको धर्मो नाले ज्ञानं शिवाश्रयम् ॥ कर्णिकोपरि चाग्नेयं मंडलं सौरमैन्दवम् ॥ १७ ॥
skande zivAtmako dharmo nAle jJAnaM zivAzrayam ॥ karNikopari cAgneyaM maMDalaM sauramaindavam ॥ 17 ॥
In Skanda, religion is based on Lord Śiva, and in Nala, knowledge is the shelter of Lord Śiva. Above the earlobe is the southern orb of the solar and moon.

शिवविद्यात्मतत्त्वाख्यं तत्त्वत्रयमतः परम् ॥ सर्वासनोपरि सुखं विचित्रकुसुमान्वितम् ॥ १८ ॥
zivavidyAtmatattvAkhyaM tattvatrayamataH param ॥ sarvAsanopari sukhaM vicitrakusumAnvitam ॥ 18 ॥
There are three elements beyond this, known as the Śiva-vidyā-atma-tattva. It was comfortable on all the seats and decorated with wonderful flowers.

पञ्चावरणसंयुक्तं पूजयेदंबया सह ॥ शुद्धस्फटिकसंकाशं प्रसन्नं शीतलद्युतिम् ॥ १९ ॥
paJcAvaraNasaMyuktaM pUjayedaMbayA saha ॥ zuddhasphaTikasaMkAzaM prasannaM zItaladyutim ॥ 19 ॥
Along with Amba, one should worship the Lord with five covers. It was like pure crystal and had a cheerful cool glow.

विद्युद्वलयसंकाशजटामुकुटभूषितम् ॥ शार्दूलचर्मवसनं किञ्चित्स्मितमुखांबुजम् ॥ २० ॥
vidyudvalayasaMkAzajaTAmukuTabhUSitam ॥ zArdUlacarmavasanaM kiJcitsmitamukhAMbujam ॥ 20 ॥
He was adorned with a crown of matted hair that resembled a ring of lightning. He was dressed in tiger skin and had a slightly smiling face.

रक्तपद्मदलप्रख्यपादपाणितलाधरम् ॥ सर्वलक्षणसंपन्नं सर्वाभरणभूषितम् ॥ २१ ॥
raktapadmadalaprakhyapAdapANitalAdharam ॥ sarvalakSaNasaMpannaM sarvAbharaNabhUSitam ॥ 21 ॥
His feet, hands and soles were like red lotus petals. It was endowed with all the characteristics and adorned with all the ornaments.

दिव्यायुधवरैर्युक्तं दिव्यगंधानुलेपनम् ॥ पञ्चवक्त्रं दशभुजं चन्द्रखण्डशिखामणिम् ॥ २२ ॥
divyAyudhavarairyuktaM divyagaMdhAnulepanam ॥ paJcavaktraM dazabhujaM candrakhaNDazikhAmaNim ॥ 22 ॥
It was adorned with the best of divine weapons and was anointed with divine perfumes. He has five faces and ten arms and is the crest of the moon.

अस्य पूर्वमुखं सौम्यं बालार्कसदृशप्रभम् ॥ त्रिलोचनारविंदाढ्यं कृतबालेंदुशेखरम् ॥ २३ ॥
asya pUrvamukhaM saumyaM bAlArkasadRzaprabham ॥ trilocanAraviMdADhyaM kRtabAleMduzekharam ॥ 23 ॥
Its eastern face is gentle and radiant like the child’s sun. He was rich in three-eyed lotuses and had a childish moon-peak.

दक्षिणं नीलजीमूतसमानरुचिरप्रभम् ॥ भ्रुकुटीकुटिलं घोरं रक्तवृत्तेक्षणत्रयम् ॥ २४ ॥
dakSiNaM nIlajImUtasamAnaruciraprabham ॥ bhrukuTIkuTilaM ghoraM raktavRttekSaNatrayam ॥ 24 ॥
The southern side was as beautiful and bright as a blue cloud. His eyebrows were crooked and he had three terrible red-circled eyes.

दंष्ट्राकरालं दुर्धर्षं स्फुरिताधरपल्लवम् ॥ उत्तरं विद्रुमप्रख्यं नीलालकविभूषितम् ॥ २५ ॥
daMSTrAkarAlaM durdharSaM sphuritAdharapallavam ॥ uttaraM vidrumaprakhyaM nIlAlakavibhUSitam ॥ 25 ॥
Its fangs were terrible and unassailable, and its lips quivered. The north is coral-like and decorated with blue eyelashes.

सविलासं त्रिनयनं चन्द्राभरणशेखरम् ॥ पश्चिमं पूर्णचन्द्राभं लोचनत्रितयोज्ज्वलम् ॥ २६ ॥
savilAsaM trinayanaM candrAbharaNazekharam ॥ pazcimaM pUrNacandrAbhaM locanatritayojjvalam ॥ 26 ॥
He had three eyes and a moon-adorned peak. The west is like the full moon and shines with three eyes.

चन्द्ररेखाधरं सौम्यं मंदस्मितमनोहरम् ॥ पञ्चमं स्फटिकप्रख्यमिंदुरेखासमुज्ज्वलम् ॥ २७ ॥
candrarekhAdharaM saumyaM maMdasmitamanoharam ॥ paJcamaM sphaTikaprakhyamiMdurekhAsamujjvalam ॥ 27 ॥
He was gentle with a moonlit smile and a charming smile. The fifth is crystal-like and bright with the lines of the moon.

अतीव सौम्यमुत्फुल्ललोचनत्रितयोज्ज्वलम् ॥ दक्षिणे शूलपरशुवज्रखड्गानलोज्ज्वलम् ॥ २८ ॥
atIva saumyamutphullalocanatritayojjvalam ॥ dakSiNe zUlaparazuvajrakhaDgAnalojjvalam ॥ 28 ॥
He was very gentle and had three bright eyes that were wide open. On the right side he carried a spear axe thunderbolt sword and fire.

सव्ये च नागनाराचघण्टापाशांकुशोज्ज्वलम् ॥ निवृत्त्याजानुसंबद्धमानाभेश्च प्रतिष्ठया ॥ २९ ॥
savye ca nAganArAcaghaNTApAzAMkuzojjvalam ॥ nivRttyAjAnusaMbaddhamAnAbhezca pratiSThayA ॥ 29 ॥
On the right side was a serpent, a bow, a bell, a rope and a goad. By withdrawing from the knees and by establishing the navel.

आकंठं विद्यया तद्वदाललाटं तु शांतया ॥ तदूर्ध्वं शांत्यतीताख्यकलया परया तथा ॥ ३० ॥
AkaMThaM vidyayA tadvadAlalATaM tu zAMtayA ॥ tadUrdhvaM zAMtyatItAkhyakalayA parayA tathA ॥ 30 ॥
The neck is covered with knowledge, and the forehead is covered with peace. Beyond that is the supreme art called Shantyatita.

पञ्चाध्वव्यापिनं साक्षात्कलापञ्चकविग्रहम् ॥ ईशानमुकुटं देवं पुरुषाख्यं पुरातनम् ॥ ३१ ॥
paJcAdhvavyApinaM sAkSAtkalApaJcakavigraham ॥ IzAnamukuTaM devaM puruSAkhyaM purAtanam ॥ 31 ॥
It pervades the five paths and is directly the embodiment of the five arts. The northern crown is the ancient god known as Purusha.

अघोरहृदयं तद्वद्वामगुह्यं महेश्वरम् ॥ सद्यपादं च तन्मूर्तिमष्टत्रिंशत्कलामयम् ॥ ३२ ॥
aghorahRdayaM tadvadvAmaguhyaM mahezvaram ॥ sadyapAdaM ca tanmUrtimaSTatriMzatkalAmayam ॥ 32 ॥
The heart of the ghastly is the left-hand secret of Lord Maheśvara. The immediate foot of that idol is composed of thirty-eight arts.

मातृकामयमीशानं पञ्चब्रह्ममयं तथा ॥ ओंकाराख्यमयं चैव हंसशक्त्या समन्वितम् ॥ ३३ ॥
mAtRkAmayamIzAnaM paJcabrahmamayaM tathA ॥ oMkArAkhyamayaM caiva haMsazaktyA samanvitam ॥ 33 ॥
The Lord is the mother and the five Brahmans are the Lord. It is also composed of the omkara and is endowed with the power of the swan.

तथेच्छात्मिकया शक्त्या समारूढांकमंडलम् ॥ ज्ञानाख्यया दक्षिणतो वामतश्च क्रियाख्यया ॥ ३४ ॥
tathecchAtmikayA zaktyA samArUDhAMkamaMDalam ॥ jJAnAkhyayA dakSiNato vAmatazca kriyAkhyayA ॥ 34 ॥
By the power of His own will, He ascended the orb of the numbers. On the right is the name of knowledge and on the left is the name of action.

तत्त्वत्रयमयं साक्षाद्विद्यामूर्तिं सदाशिवम् ॥ मूर्तिमूलेन संकल्प्य सकलीकृत्य च क्रमात् ॥ ३५ ॥
tattvatrayamayaM sAkSAdvidyAmUrtiM sadAzivam ॥ mUrtimUlena saMkalpya sakalIkRtya ca kramAt ॥ 35 ॥
This threefold element is directly the embodiment of knowledge and is always known as Sadaśiva. Resolving at the root of the idol and making it all together in order.

संपूज्य च यथान्यायमर्घान्तं मूलविद्यया ॥ मूर्तिमन्तं शिवं साक्षाच्छक्त्या परमया सह ॥ ३६ ॥
saMpUjya ca yathAnyAyamarghAntaM mUlavidyayA ॥ mUrtimantaM zivaM sAkSAcchaktyA paramayA saha ॥ 36 ॥
After worshiping the Lord in accordance with the prescribed rituals, one should chant the basic knowledge. Lord Śiva incarnate directly with the supreme energy.

तत्रावाह्य महादेवं सदसद्व्यक्तिवर्जितम् ॥ पञ्चोपकरणं कृत्वा पूजयेत्परमेश्वरम् ॥ ३७ ॥
tatrAvAhya mahAdevaM sadasadvyaktivarjitam ॥ paJcopakaraNaM kRtvA pUjayetparamezvaram ॥ 37 ॥
There one should invoke Lord Śiva, who is devoid of all causes and effects. Making five utensils one should worship the Supreme Lord.

ब्रह्मभिश्च षडङ्गैश्च ततो मातृकया सह ॥ प्रणवेन शिवेनैव शक्तियुक्तेन च क्रमात् ॥ ३८ ॥
brahmabhizca SaDaGgaizca tato mAtRkayA saha ॥ praNavena zivenaiva zaktiyuktena ca kramAt ॥ 38 ॥
Then the six Vedas, along with the mother goddess, appeared. The oṁkāra is chanted by Lord Śiva and by Lord Śiva in order.

शांतेन वा तथान्यैश्च वेदमन्त्रैश्च कृत्स्नशः ॥ पूजयेत्परमं देवं केवलेन शिवेन वा ॥ ३९ ॥
zAMtena vA tathAnyaizca vedamantraizca kRtsnazaH ॥ pUjayetparamaM devaM kevalena zivena vA ॥ 39 ॥
Or by chanting peaceful words and other Vedic mantras in their entirety One should worship the Supreme Lord with Lord Shiva alone.

पाद्यादिमुखवासांतं कृत्वा प्रस्थापनं विना ॥ पञ्चावरणपूजां तु ह्यारभेत यथाक्रमम् ॥ ४० ॥
pAdyAdimukhavAsAMtaM kRtvA prasthApanaM vinA ॥ paJcAvaraNapUjAM tu hyArabheta yathAkramam ॥ 40 ॥
Without sending them away, they should finish their feet and other face clothes. The worship of the five covers should be started in order.
