upamanyuruvAca ॥ prokSayenmUlamaMtreNa pUjAsthAnaM vizuddhaye ॥ gandhacandanatoyena puSpaM tatra vinikSipet ॥ 1 ॥
Upamanyu said:— The devotee shall sprinkle the place of worship with scented sandal water for the sake of purity, with the basic mantra. He shall put flowers there.

The obstacles shall be warded off. The place shall be veiled with Varma mantra. After performing the rite of Astranyāsa in the quarters, the place of worship shall be arranged.

तत्र दर्भान्परिस्तीर्य क्षालयेत्प्रोक्षणादिभिः ॥ संशोध्य सर्वपात्राणि द्रव्यशुद्धिं समाचरेत् ॥ ३ ॥
tatra darbhAnparistIrya kSAlayetprokSaNAdibhiH ॥ saMzodhya sarvapAtrANi dravyazuddhiM samAcaret ॥ 3 ॥
Darbha grass shall be strewn over and washed by means of sprinkling. After cleaning the vessels he shall sanctify the materials.

प्रोक्षणीमर्ध्यपात्रं च पाद्यपात्रमतः परम् ॥ तथैवाचमनीयस्य पात्रं चेति चतुष्टयम् ॥ ४ ॥
prokSaNImardhyapAtraM ca pAdyapAtramataH param ॥ tathaivAcamanIyasya pAtraM ceti catuSTayam ॥ 4 ॥
A vessel for sprinkling water and half a vessel for washing feet are also used. Similarly, the vessel for washing the body is fourfold.

prakSAlya prokSya vIkSyAtha kSipetteSu jalaM zivam ॥ puNyadravyANi sarvANi yathAlAbhaM vinikSipet ॥ 5 ॥
After washing the body, sprinkle it with water and examine it, one should pour auspicious water on it. One should place all the sacred objects as much as one can afford.

ratnAni rajataM hema gandhapuSpAkSatAdayaH ॥ phalapallavadarbhAMzca puNyadravyANyanekadhA ॥ 6 ॥
The holy materials of worship are many such as gems, silver, gold, scents, flowers, Akṣatas, fruits, sprouts and Darbha grass.

snAnodake sugandhAdi pAnIye ca vizeSataH ॥ zItalAni manojJAnI kusumAdIni nikSipet ॥ 7 ॥
In the water for ablution and particularly in that intended for drinking, sweet scents as well as cool and charming flowers shall be put.

Uśīra and sandalwood paste should be placed on the feet of the Lord. jatikankolakarpurabahumulatamala.

क्षिपेदाचमनीये च चूर्णयित्वा विशेषतः ॥ एलां पात्रेषु सर्वेषु कर्पूरं चन्दनं तथा ॥ ९ ॥
kSipedAcamanIye ca cUrNayitvA vizeSataH ॥ elAM pAtreSu sarveSu karpUraM candanaM tathA ॥ 9 ॥
After grinding the mixture, one should throw it into a washbasin. Elm in all the vessels camphor and sandalwood.

kuzAgrANyakSatAMzcaiva yavavrIhitilAnapi ॥ AjyasiddhArthapuSpANi bhasitaJcArghyapAtrake ॥ 10 ॥
In the Arghya vessel all these materials shall be put—shoots of Kuśa grass, Akṣatas, barley, gingelly seeds, other grains, ghee, white mustard, flowers and Bhasma.

The following materials shall be put in the Prokṣaṇī vessel:—Kuśa, flowers, Yava grains, Bahumūla and Tamālaka along with Bhasma.

सर्वत्र मन्त्रं विन्यस्य वर्मणावेष्ट्य बाह्यतः ॥ पश्चादस्त्रेण संरक्ष्य धेनुमुद्रां प्रदर्शयेत् ॥ १२ ॥
sarvatra mantraM vinyasya varmaNAveSTya bAhyataH ॥ pazcAdastreNa saMrakSya dhenumudrAM pradarzayet ॥ 12 ॥
Every vessel shall be blessed by chanting the mantras; externally covered by the Varma mantra and protected by Astra mantra. He shall show the Mudrā of cow.

pUjAdravyANi sarvANi prokSaNIpAtravAriNA ॥ samprokSya mUlamaMtreNa zodhayedvidhivattataH ॥ 13 ॥
He shall purify the materials of worship by means of the water from the vessel Prokṣaṇī sprinkled on them repeating the basic mantra.

पात्राणां प्रोक्षणीमेकामलाभे सर्वकर्मसु ॥ साधयेदर्घ्यमद्भिस्तत्सामान्यं साधकोत्तमः ॥ १४ ॥
pAtrANAM prokSaNImekAmalAbhe sarvakarmasu ॥ sAdhayedarghyamadbhistatsAmAnyaM sAdhakottamaH ॥ 14 ॥
If all the vessels are not available the excellent aspirant shall arrange the vessel Prokṣaṇī in every holy rite. Arghya etc. shall be performed by the water therefrom.

ततो विनायकं देवं भक्ष्यभोज्यादिभिः क्रमात् ॥ पूजयित्वा विधानेन द्वारपार्श्वे ऽथ दक्षिणे ॥ १५ ॥
tato vinAyakaM devaM bhakSyabhojyAdibhiH kramAt ॥ pUjayitvA vidhAnena dvArapArzve 'tha dakSiNe ॥ 15 ॥
Then, one after another, Lord Vinayaka was offered food and drink. After worshiping them in accordance with the prescribed rituals he placed them on the right side of the door.

अन्तःपुराधिपं साक्षान्नन्दिनं सम्यगर्चयेत् ॥ चामीकराचलप्रख्यं सर्वाभरणभूषितम् ॥ १६ ॥
antaHpurAdhipaM sAkSAnnandinaM samyagarcayet ॥ cAmIkarAcalaprakhyaM sarvAbharaNabhUSitam ॥ 16 ॥
One should worship the Lord of the inner palace, Nandi, directly. It was like a mountain of gold and adorned with all kinds of ornaments.

बालेन्दुमुकुटं सौम्यं त्रिनेत्रं च चतुर्भुजम् ॥ दीप्तशूलमृगीटंकतिग्मवेत्रधरं प्रभुम् ॥ १७ ॥
bAlendumukuTaM saumyaM trinetraM ca caturbhujam ॥ dIptazUlamRgITaMkatigmavetradharaM prabhum ॥ 17 ॥
He has a crown like a child’s moon and is gentle with three eyes and four arms. The lord carried a burning spear and a deer tank and a sharp staff

चन्द्रबिम्बाभवदनं हरिवक्त्रमथापि वा ॥ उत्तरे द्वारपार्श्वस्य भार्यां च मरुतां सुताम् ॥ १८ ॥
candrabimbAbhavadanaM harivaktramathApi vA ॥ uttare dvArapArzvasya bhAryAM ca marutAM sutAm ॥ 18 ॥
Your face may be like the moon’s reflection, or maybe it’s the face of Lord Hari. On the north side of the gate he married his wife and daughter of Maruta.

सुयशां सुव्रतामम्बां पादमण्डनतत्पराम् ॥ पूजयित्वा प्रविश्यान्तर्भवनं परमेष्ठिनः ॥ १९ ॥
suyazAM suvratAmambAM pAdamaNDanatatparAm ॥ pUjayitvA pravizyAntarbhavanaM parameSThinaH ॥ 19 ॥
The mother of the goddess of fortune was well-known and well-vowed. After worshiping him he entered the inner palace of the Supreme Lord.

संपूज्य लिङ्गं तैर्द्रव्यैर्निर्माल्यमपनोदयेत् ॥ प्रक्षाल्य पुष्पं शिरसि न्यसेत्तस्य विशुद्धये ॥ २० ॥
saMpUjya liGgaM tairdravyairnirmAlyamapanodayet ॥ prakSAlya puSpaM zirasi nyasettasya vizuddhaye ॥ 20 ॥
After worshiping the deity with these objects, one should remove the garland. Wash the flower and place it on the head for purification.

पुष्पहस्तो जपेच्छक्त्या मन्त्रं मन्त्रविशुद्धये ॥ ऐशान्यां चण्दमाराध्य निर्माल्यं तस्य दापयेत् ॥ २१ ॥
puSpahasto japecchaktyA mantraM mantravizuddhaye ॥ aizAnyAM caNdamArAdhya nirmAlyaM tasya dApayet ॥ 21 ॥
Holding a flower in his hand, one should chant the mantra with all his might to purify the mantra. One should worship the moon in the northeast and offer him a garland.

कल्पयेदासनं पश्चादाधारादि यथाक्रमम् ॥ आधारशक्तिं कल्याणीं श्यामां ध्यायेदधो भुवि ॥ २२ ॥
kalpayedAsanaM pazcAdAdhArAdi yathAkramam ॥ AdhArazaktiM kalyANIM zyAmAM dhyAyedadho bhuvi ॥ 22 ॥
Afterwards one should arrange the seat, the base and the others in order. One should meditate on the auspicious darkness of the base energy on the ground below.

तस्याः पुरस्तादुत्कंठमनंतं कुण्डलाकृतिम् ॥ धवलं पञ्चफणिनं लेलिहानमिवाम्बरम् ॥ २३ ॥
tasyAH purastAdutkaMThamanaMtaM kuNDalAkRtim ॥ dhavalaM paJcaphaNinaM lelihAnamivAmbaram ॥ 23 ॥
In front of her was a necklace in the shape of an infinite earring. It was white with five hoods and looked like a playful dress.

तस्योपर्यासनं भद्रं कण्ठीरवचतुष्पदम् ॥ धर्मो ज्ञानं च वैराग्यमैश्वर्यञ्च पदानि वै ॥ २४ ॥
tasyoparyAsanaM bhadraM kaNThIravacatuSpadam ॥ dharmo jJAnaM ca vairAgyamaizvaryaJca padAni vai ॥ 24 ॥
The seat of the Lord is auspicious, with a neck and four legs. Religion, knowledge, detachment and opulence are the four steps.

आग्नेयादिश्वेतरक्तपीतश्यामानि वर्णतः ॥ अधर्मादीनि पूर्वादीन्युत्तरांतान्यनुक्रमात् ॥ २५ ॥
AgneyAdizvetaraktapItazyAmAni varNataH ॥ adharmAdIni pUrvAdInyuttarAMtAnyanukramAt ॥ 25 ॥
The colors of these planets are white, red, yellow and black, beginning with the fire. Adharma and others are the former and the latter in order.

राजावर्तमणिप्रख्यान्न्यस्य गात्राणि भावयेत् ॥ अस्योर्ध्वच्छादनं पद्ममासनं विमलं सितम् ॥ २६ ॥
rAjAvartamaNiprakhyAnnyasya gAtrANi bhAvayet ॥ asyordhvacchAdanaM padmamAsanaM vimalaM sitam ॥ 26 ॥
Placing the objects known as rajavartamani, one should meditate on the limbs. The top cover of this is a pure white lotus seat.

अष्टपत्राणि तस्याहुरणिमादिगुणाष्टकम् ॥ केसराणि च वामाद्या रुद्रावामादिशक्तिभिः ॥ २७ ॥
aSTapatrANi tasyAhuraNimAdiguNASTakam ॥ kesarANi ca vAmAdyA rudrAvAmAdizaktibhiH ॥ 27 ॥
The eight leaves of the tree are said to have eight qualities, beginning with gold. The saffrons are also adorned with the left-handed powers of Rudra and the left-handed.

बीजान्यपि च ता एव शक्तयोंतर्मनोन्मनीः ॥ कर्णिकापरवैराग्यं नालं ज्ञानं शिवात्मकम् ॥ २८ ॥
bIjAnyapi ca tA eva zaktayoMtarmanonmanIH ॥ karNikAparavairAgyaM nAlaM jJAnaM zivAtmakam ॥ 28 ॥
The seeds too are those Śaktis alone Manonmanī etc. within. The pericarp is the greatest detachment and the stalk is the Śaivite knowledge.

कन्दश्च शिवधर्मात्मा कर्णिकान्ते त्रिमण्डले ॥ त्रिमण्डलोपर्यात्मादि तत्त्वत्रितयमासनम् ॥ २९ ॥
kandazca zivadharmAtmA karNikAnte trimaNDale ॥ trimaNDaloparyAtmAdi tattvatritayamAsanam ॥ 29 ॥
The bulbous root at the extremity of the pericarp with the three zones shall be used in the Śaivite rites. Over the three zones the three Tattvas, Ātman etc. are the seats.

सर्वासनोपरि सुखं विचित्रास्तरणास्तृतम् ॥ आसनं कल्पयेद्दिव्यं शुद्धविद्यासमुज्ज्वलम् ॥ ३० ॥
sarvAsanopari sukhaM vicitrAstaraNAstRtam ॥ AsanaM kalpayeddivyaM zuddhavidyAsamujjvalam ॥ 30 ॥
Above the seats shall be conceived the divine seat refulgent with the pure learning or knowledge, very comfortable and covered over by a covering sheet of colours.

आवाहनं स्थापनं च सन्निरोधं निरीक्षणम् ॥ नमस्कारं च कुर्वीत बध्वा मुद्राः पृथक्पृथक् ॥ ३१ ॥
AvAhanaM sthApanaM ca sannirodhaM nirIkSaNam ॥ namaskAraM ca kurvIta badhvA mudrAH pRthakpRthak ॥ 31 ॥
He shall perform the rites of invocation, installation prevention, surveying and obeisance showing separate Mudrās for each.

पाद्यमाचमनं चार्घ्यं गंधं पुष्पं ततः परम् ॥ धूपं दीपं च तांबूलं दत्त्वाथ स्वापयेच्छिवौ ॥ ३२ ॥
pAdyamAcamanaM cArghyaM gaMdhaM puSpaM tataH param ॥ dhUpaM dIpaM ca tAMbUlaM dattvAtha svApayecchivau ॥ 32 ॥
After offering Pādya, Acamana, Arghya, scents, flowers, incense, light and Tāmbūla, the devotee shall perform the ablution of Śiva and Śivā.

अथवा परिकल्प्यैवमासनं मूर्तिमेव च ॥ सकलीकृत्य मूलेन ब्रह्माभिश्चापरैस्तथा ॥ ३३ ॥
athavA parikalpyaivamAsanaM mUrtimeva ca ॥ sakalIkRtya mUlena brahmAbhizcAparaistathA ॥ 33 ॥
Or else you may arrange a seat and an idol in this way. They were collected by the root and by the Brahmans and others.

आवाहयेत्ततो देव्या शिवं परमकारणम् ॥ शुद्धस्फटिकसंकाशं देवं निश्चलमक्षरम् ॥ ३४ ॥
AvAhayettato devyA zivaM paramakAraNam ॥ zuddhasphaTikasaMkAzaM devaM nizcalamakSaram ॥ 34 ॥
Then one should invoke Lord Śiva, the supreme cause, by the goddess Durgā. The god is motionless and infallible, resembling pure crystal.

कारणं सर्वलोकानां सर्वलोकमयं परम् ॥ अंतर्बहिःस्थितं व्याप्य ह्यणोरणु महत्तरम् २ ॥ ३५ ॥
kAraNaM sarvalokAnAM sarvalokamayaM param ॥ aMtarbahiHsthitaM vyApya hyaNoraNu mahattaram 2 ॥ 35 ॥
He is the cause of all the worlds and is the Supreme Being of all the worlds. The atom is greater than 2 pervading the inside and outside.

भक्तानामप्रयत्नेन दृश्यमीश्वरमव्ययम् ॥ ब्रह्मेंद्रविष्णुरुद्राद्यैरपि देवैरगोचरम् ॥ ३६ ॥
bhaktAnAmaprayatnena dRzyamIzvaramavyayam ॥ brahmeMdraviSNurudrAdyairapi devairagocaram ॥ 36 ॥
The inexhaustible Lord is visible to His devotees without effort. It is invisible even to Brahma, Indra, Vishnu, Rudra and other demigods.

देवसारं च विद्वद्भिरगोचरमिति श्रुतम् ॥ आदिमध्यान्तरहितं भेषजं भवरोगिणाम् ॥ ३७ ॥
devasAraM ca vidvadbhiragocaramiti zrutam ॥ AdimadhyAntarahitaM bheSajaM bhavarogiNAm ॥ 37 ॥
Learned men have heard that the essence of the demigods is invisible. It is the remedy for the sick of birth without beginning or middle.

शिवतत्त्वमिति ख्यातं शिवार्थं जगति स्थिरम् ॥ पञ्चोपचारवद्भक्त्या पूजयेल्लिंगमुत्तमम् ॥ ३८ ॥
zivatattvamiti khyAtaM zivArthaM jagati sthiram ॥ paJcopacAravadbhaktyA pUjayelliMgamuttamam ॥ 38 ॥
It is known as the Śiva-tattva and is fixed in the world for the sake of Śiva. One should worship this excellent Lingam with devotion as in the five rituals.

लिंगमूर्तिर्महेशस्य शिवस्य परमात्मनः ॥ स्नानकाले प्रकुर्वीत जयशब्दादिमंगलम् ॥ ३९ ॥
liMgamUrtirmahezasya zivasya paramAtmanaH ॥ snAnakAle prakurvIta jayazabdAdimaMgalam ॥ 39 ॥
Linga is the embodiment of Lord Maheśa, Lord Śiva, the Supreme Soul. At the time of bathing one should chant the auspicious words Jaya and others.

Arghya and handful of flowers shall be offered and Mudrā shall be shown in accordance with injunctions. Forgiveness shall be prayed and the lord shall be ritualistically dismissed. The devotee shall meditate on the lord only in his Ātman.

pAdyAdimukhavAsAMtamarghyAdyaM cAtisaMkaTe ॥ puSpavikSepamAtraM vA kuryAdbhAvapurassaram ॥ 68 ॥
In distress the offerings are restricted to those beginning with Pādya and ending with Tāmbūla, or to those beginning with Arghya, or to mere offering of flowers, but with pious feelings.

tAvataiva paro dharmo bhAvane sukRto bhavet ॥ asaMpUjya na bhuJjIta zivamAprANasaMcarAt ॥ 69 ॥
Even that much is enough for earning virtue. As long as he lives the devotee shall not take meals without worshipping Śiva.

yadi pApastu bhuMjIta svairaM taysa na niSkRtiH ॥ pramAdena tu bhuMkte cettadudgIrya prayatnataH ॥ 70 ॥
If a sinner eats it at will, he is not expiated. If he eats it carelessly he should swallow it with great effort.

snAtvA dviguNamabhyarcya devaM devImupoSya ca ॥ zivasyAyutamabhyasyedbrahmacaryapurassaram ॥ 71 ॥
After bathing, he worshiped Lord Śiva twice as much and observed a fast. One should practice the ten thousand mantras of Lord Śiva followed by celibacy.

paredyuzzaktito dattvA suvarNAdyaM zivAya ca ॥ zivabhaktAya vA kRtvA mahApUjAM zucirbhavet ॥ 72 ॥
On the next day, according to one’s ability, one should offer gold and other objects to Lord Śiva. Or one who performs great worship for a devotee of Lord Śiva becomes pure.
