उपमन्युरुवाच ॥ व्याख्यां पूजाविधानस्य प्रवदामि समासतः ॥ शिवशास्त्रे शिवेनैव शिवायै कथितस्य तु ॥ १ ॥
upamanyuruvAca ॥ vyAkhyAM pUjAvidhAnasya pravadAmi samAsataH ॥ zivazAstre zivenaiva zivAyai kathitasya tu ॥ 1 ॥
Upamanyu said:— I shall briefly give a commentary to the rules governing worships mentioned by Śiva to Śivā in the Śaivite scriptures.

अंगमभ्यंतरं यागमग्निकार्यावसानकम् ॥ विधाय वा न वा पश्चाद्बहिर्यागं समाचरेत् ॥ २ ॥
aMgamabhyaMtaraM yAgamagnikAryAvasAnakam ॥ vidhAya vA na vA pazcAdbahiryAgaM samAcaret ॥ 2 ॥
With or without performing the internal worship which is its ancillary and which concludes with the rites in fire, one shall perform the external worship.

तत्र द्रव्याणि मनसा कल्पयित्वा विशोध्य च ॥ ध्यात्वा विनायकं देवं पूजयित्वा विधानतः ॥ ३ ॥
tatra dravyANi manasA kalpayitvA vizodhya ca ॥ dhyAtvA vinAyakaM devaM pUjayitvA vidhAnataH ॥ 3 ॥
After imagining the ingredients in the sacrificial fire, one should purify them. Having meditated on Lord Vinayaka and worshiped him in accordance with the prescribed rituals.

दक्षिणे चोत्तरे चैव नंदीशं सुयशं तथा ॥ आराध्य मनसा सम्यगासनं कल्पयेद्बुधः ॥ ४ ॥
dakSiNe cottare caiva naMdIzaM suyazaM tathA ॥ ArAdhya manasA samyagAsanaM kalpayedbudhaH ॥ 4 ॥
In the southern and northern regions are Nandisha and Suyasha The wise man should worship the Lord with his mind and arrange a proper seat.

आराधनादिकैर्युक्तस्सिंहयोगासनादिकम् ॥ पद्मासनं वा विमलं तत्त्वत्रयसमन्वितम् ॥ ५ ॥
ArAdhanAdikairyuktassiMhayogAsanAdikam ॥ padmAsanaM vA vimalaM tattvatrayasamanvitam ॥ 5 ॥
It may be a throne or a yogic seat or lotus-seat equipped with the three principles.

तस्योपरि शिवं ध्यायेत्सांबं सर्वमनोहरम् ॥ सर्वलक्षणसंपन्नं सर्वावयवशोभनम् ॥ ६ ॥
tasyopari zivaM dhyAyetsAMbaM sarvamanoharam ॥ sarvalakSaNasaMpannaM sarvAvayavazobhanam ॥ 6 ॥
Śiva shall be meditated on it. He is accompanied by Ambā. He is charming, endowed with all characteristics, auspicious in every limb.

सर्वातिशयसंयुक्तं सर्वाभरणभूषितम् ॥ रक्तास्यपाणिचरणं कुंदचंद्रस्मिताननम् ॥ ७ ॥
sarvAtizayasaMyuktaM sarvAbharaNabhUSitam ॥ raktAsyapANicaraNaM kuMdacaMdrasmitAnanam ॥ 7 ॥
He possesses all excellences. He is bedecked in all ornaments. His face, hands and feet, are red. His face beams with smiles resembling the Kunda flower and the moon.

शुद्धस्फटिकसंकाशं फुल्लपद्मत्रिलोचनम् ॥ चतुर्भुजमुदाराङ्गं चारुचंद्रकलाधरम् ॥ ८ ॥
zuddhasphaTikasaMkAzaM phullapadmatrilocanam ॥ caturbhujamudArAGgaM cArucaMdrakalAdharam ॥ 8 ॥
He is as pure as the pure crystal. He has three eyes resembling full blown lotus. He has four arms and splendid body. He wears the charming digit of the moon.

वरदाभयहस्तं च मृगटंकधरं हरम् ॥ भुजंगहारवलयं चारुनीलगलांतरम् ॥ ९ ॥
varadAbhayahastaM ca mRgaTaMkadharaM haram ॥ bhujaMgahAravalayaM cArunIlagalAMtaram ॥ 9 ॥
His hands show the gestures of granting the boon and protection. He holds the deer and an axe. fie has serpents for necklaces and bangles. His neck is charmingly blue.

सर्वोपमानरहितं सानुगं सपरिच्छदम् ॥ ततः संचिंतयेत्तस्य वामभागे महेश्वरीम् ॥ १० ॥
sarvopamAnarahitaM sAnugaM saparicchadam ॥ tataH saMciMtayettasya vAmabhAge mahezvarIm ॥ 10 ॥
He has none to compare with. He is accompanied by his followers and attendants. Then the devotee shall think of him to his left.

प्रफुल्लोत्पलपत्राभां विस्तीर्णायतलोचनाम् ॥ पूर्णचंद्राभवदनां नीलकुंचितमूर्धजाम् ॥ ११ ॥
praphullotpalapatrAbhAM vistIrNAyatalocanAm ॥ pUrNacaMdrAbhavadanAM nIlakuMcitamUrdhajAm ॥ 11 ॥
She is as tender as the petals of full blown-lotus. Her eyes are large and broad. Her face has the lustre of the full moon. Her tresses are dark-blue and curly.

नीलोत्पलदलप्रख्यां चन्द्रार्धकृतशेखराम् ॥ अतिवृत्तघनोत्तुंगस्निग्धपीनपयोधराम् ॥ १२ ॥
nIlotpaladalaprakhyAM candrArdhakRtazekharAm ॥ ativRttaghanottuMgasnigdhapInapayodharAm ॥ 12 ॥
Her complexion has the lustre of the petals of a blue lotus. She has the half moon for her coronet. Her breasts are round, weighty, lifted up, smooth and plump.

तनुमध्यां पृथुश्रोणीं पीतसूक्ष्मवराम्बराम् ॥ सर्वाभरणसंपन्नां ललाटतिलकोज्ज्वलाम् ॥ १३ ॥
tanumadhyAM pRthuzroNIM pItasUkSmavarAmbarAm ॥ sarvAbharaNasaMpannAM lalATatilakojjvalAm ॥ 13 ॥
Her middle is slender. Her buttocks are large. She wears an exquisitely fine yellow garment. She is riddly bedecked in all ornaments. The Tilakā mark on her forehead is dazzlingly brilliant.

विचित्रपुष्पसंकीर्णकेशपाशोपशोभिताम् ॥ सर्वतो ऽनुगुणाकारां किंचिल्लज्जानताननाम् ॥ १४ ॥
vicitrapuSpasaMkIrNakezapAzopazobhitAm ॥ sarvato 'nuguNAkArAM kiMcillajjAnatAnanAm ॥ 14 ॥
She shines with flowers of various colours embellishing her braid of hair. In every respect her features are in consonance with her qualities. Due to bashfulness her face is slightly lowered.

हेमारविंदं विलसद्दधानां दक्षिणे करे ॥ दंडवच्चापरं हस्ते न्यस्यासीनां महासने ॥ १५ ॥
hemAraviMdaM vilasaddadhAnAM dakSiNe kare ॥ daMDavaccAparaM haste nyasyAsInAM mahAsane ॥ 15 ॥
In her right hand she bears a shining golden lotus. She is seated on a splendid seat with the other hand placed on it like a supporting staff.

पाशविच्छेदिकां साक्षात्सच्चिदानंदरूपिणीम् ॥ एवं देवं च देवीं च ध्यात्वासनवरे शुभे ॥ १६ ॥
pAzavicchedikAM sAkSAtsaccidAnaMdarUpiNIm ॥ evaM devaM ca devIM ca dhyAtvAsanavare zubhe ॥ 16 ॥
She breaks the ropes and is directly the embodiment of truth and bliss. Thus meditating on the god and goddess on an auspicious seat.

सर्वोपचारवद्भक्त्या भावपुष्पैस्समर्चयेत् ॥ अथवा परिकल्प्यैवं मूर्तिमन्यतमां विभोः ॥ १७ ॥
sarvopacAravadbhaktyA bhAvapuSpaissamarcayet ॥ athavA parikalpyaivaM mUrtimanyatamAM vibhoH ॥ 17 ॥
One should worship the Lord with devotion and flowers of bhava as in all other rituals. Or else he may thus imagine another idol of the almighty.

शैवीं सदाशिवाख्यां वा तथा माहेश्वरीं पराम् ॥ षड्विंशकाभिधानां वा श्रीकंठाख्यामथापि वा ॥ १८ ॥
zaivIM sadAzivAkhyAM vA tathA mAhezvarIM parAm ॥ SaDviMzakAbhidhAnAM vA zrIkaMThAkhyAmathApi vA ॥ 18 ॥
The goddess known as Śiva or Sadaśiva is also known as Māheśvarī. Or the name of the twenty-six or the name of Srikantha.

मन्त्रन्यासादिकां चापि कृत्वा स्वस्यां तनौ यथा ॥ अस्यां मूर्तौ मूर्तिमंतं शिवं सदसतः परम् ॥ १९ ॥
mantranyAsAdikAM cApi kRtvA svasyAM tanau yathA ॥ asyAM mUrtau mUrtimaMtaM zivaM sadasataH param ॥ 19 ॥
She also chanted mantras and other rituals, just as she did in her own body. In this idol Lord Shiva is embodied beyond all causes and effects.

ध्यात्वा बाह्यक्रमेणैव पूजां निर्वर्तयेद्धिया ॥ समिदाज्यादिभिः पश्चान्नाभौ होमं च भावयेत् ॥ २० ॥
dhyAtvA bAhyakrameNaiva pUjAM nirvartayeddhiyA ॥ samidAjyAdibhiH pazcAnnAbhau homaM ca bhAvayet ॥ 20 ॥
After meditating on the Lord, one should perform the worship in external order. Afterwards one should meditate on the navel with the sacrificial fire and other oblations.

भ्रूमध्ये च शिवं ध्यायेच्छुद्धदीपशिखाकृतिम् ॥ इत्थमंगे स्वतंत्रे वा योगे ध्यानमये शुभे ॥ २१ ॥
bhrUmadhye ca zivaM dhyAyecchuddhadIpazikhAkRtim ॥ itthamaMge svataMtre vA yoge dhyAnamaye zubhe ॥ 21 ॥
One should meditate on Lord Śiva in the form of the flame of a pure lamp in the middle of one’s eyebrows. Thus in the independent or in the auspicious yoga of meditation.

अग्निकार्यावसानं च सर्वत्रैव समो विधिः ॥ अथ चिंतामयं सर्वं समाप्याराधनक्रमम् ॥ २२ ॥
agnikAryAvasAnaM ca sarvatraiva samo vidhiH ॥ atha ciMtAmayaM sarvaM samApyArAdhanakramam ॥ 22 ॥
The same method is applied everywhere to the end of the fire ritual. Then, having completed all the worries, the order of worship was completed.

लिंगे च पूजयेद्देवं स्थंडिले वानले ऽपि वा ॥ २३ ॥
liMge ca pUjayeddevaM sthaMDile vAnale 'pi vA ॥ 23 ॥
One should worship the deity in the lingam on the ground or in the forest.
