upamanyuruvAca ॥ nyAsastu trividhaH proktaH sthityutpattilayakramAt ॥ sthitirnyAso gRhasthAnAmutpattirbrahmacAriNAm ॥ 1 ॥
Upamanyu said:- There are three kinds of renunciation, in order of position, origin and dissolution. The position of the householders is the renunciation, and the origin of the celibates.

The same is true of the ascetics who live in the forest. That is the situation of a wife without a husband.

kanyAyAH punarutpattiM vakSye nyAsasya lakSaNam ॥ aMguSThAdikaniSThAMtaM sthitinyAsa udAhRtaH ॥ 3 ॥
I shall now describe the rebirth of the daughter and the characteristics of the sacrifice. The position of the thumb and other fingers is described as the position of the body.

dakSiNAMguSThamArabhya vAmAMguSThAntameva ca ॥ utpattinyAsa AkhyAto viparItastu saMhRtiH ॥ 4 ॥
Starting with the right thumb and ending with the left thumb The process of origination and renunciation is described, but the opposite is described as annihilation.

The letters “Na” etc. along with the Bindus shall be fixed in order in the fingers. Śiva shall be fixed on the palms and on the little fingers.

अस्त्रन्यासं ततः कृत्वा दशदिक्ष्वस्त्रमंत्रतः ॥ निवृत्त्यादिकलाः पञ्च पञ्चभूतस्वरूपिणीः ॥ ६ ॥
astranyAsaM tataH kRtvA dazadikSvastramaMtrataH ॥ nivRttyAdikalAH paJca paJcabhUtasvarUpiNIH ॥ 6 ॥
Then place the weapons in the ten directions and chant the mantra of the weapons. The five arts of renunciation and others are in the form of the five elements.

paJcabhUtAdhipaissArdhaM tataccihnasamanvitAH ॥ hRtkaNTatAlubhrUmadhyabrahmarandhrasamAzrayAH ॥ 7 ॥
They were accompanied by the lords of the five elements and accompanied by their symbols They are situated in the heart, thorns, palate, eyebrows, middle brahma-hole.

तद्तद्बीजेन संग्रंथीस्तद्तद्बीजेषु भावयेत् ॥ तासां विशोधनार्थाय विद्यां पञ्चाक्षरीं जपेत् ॥ ८ ॥
tadtadbIjena saMgraMthIstadtadbIjeSu bhAvayet ॥ tAsAM vizodhanArthAya vidyAM paJcAkSarIM japet ॥ 8 ॥
Then, with the seeds of each of these, one should meditate on the seeds of each of these. To purify these sins, one should chant the five-syllabled mantra.

niruddhvA prANavAyuM ca guNasaMkhyAnusArataH ॥ bhUtagraMthiM tatazchidyAdastreNaivAstramudrayA ॥ 9 ॥
Then he restrained the breath and air according to the number of modes of nature. Then one should cut the knot of ghosts with the same weapon as the seal of the weapon.

नाड्या सुषुम्नयात्मानं प्रेरितं प्राणवायुना ॥ निर्गतं ब्रह्मरन्ध्रेण योजयेच्छिवतेजसा ॥ १० ॥
nADyA suSumnayAtmAnaM preritaM prANavAyunA ॥ nirgataM brahmarandhreNa yojayecchivatejasA ॥ 10 ॥
The soul is moved by the vital air through the veins and the consciousness. Then one should place the effulgence of Lord Śiva through the Brahma-hole.

विशोष्य वायुना पश्चाद्देहं कालाग्निना दहेत् ॥ ततश्चोपरिभावेन कलास्संहृत्य वायुना ॥ ११ ॥
vizoSya vAyunA pazcAddehaM kAlAgninA dahet ॥ tatazcoparibhAvena kalAssaMhRtya vAyunA ॥ 11 ॥
After drying the body with air, one should burn it with the fire of time. Then, by the influence of the wind, the arts were withdrawn.

dehaM saMhRtya vai dagdhaM kalAsspRSTvA sahAbdhinA ॥ plAvayitvAmRtairdehaM yathAsthAnaM nivezayet ॥ 12 ॥
After withdrawing his body and burning it with the ocean he touched the arts After flooding the body with nectar, one should place it in its proper place.

अथ संहृत्य वै दग्धः कलासर्गं विनैव तु ॥ अमृतप्लावनं कुर्याद्भस्मीभूतस्य वै ततः ॥ १३ ॥
atha saMhRtya vai dagdhaH kalAsargaM vinaiva tu ॥ amRtaplAvanaM kuryAdbhasmIbhUtasya vai tataH ॥ 13 ॥
Then he was withdrawn and burned, but without the creation of art. After the body has been reduced to ashes, one should float it with nectar.

ततो विद्यामये तस्मिन्देहे दीपशिखाकृतिम् ॥ शिवान्निर्गतमात्मानं ब्रह्मरंध्रेण योजयेत् ॥ १४ ॥
tato vidyAmaye tasmindehe dIpazikhAkRtim ॥ zivAnnirgatamAtmAnaM brahmaraMdhreNa yojayet ॥ 14 ॥
In the body consisting of Vidyā, he shall join the Ātman that has come out of Śiva in the form of the flame of a lamp. He shall join it through the Brahmarandhra.

देहस्यान्तः प्रविष्टं तं ध्यात्वा हृदयपंकजे ॥ पुनश्चामृतवर्षेण सिंचेद्विद्यामयं वपुः ॥ १५ ॥
dehasyAntaH praviSTaM taM dhyAtvA hRdayapaMkaje ॥ punazcAmRtavarSeNa siMcedvidyAmayaM vapuH ॥ 15 ॥
After meditating on the Ātman that has entered the body, in the lotus of the heart, he shall sprinkle with the shower of nectar the body consisting of Vidyā.

ततः कुर्यात्करन्यासं करशोधनपूर्वकम् ॥ देहन्यासं ततः पश्चान्महत्या मुद्रया चरेत् ॥ १६ ॥
tataH kuryAtkaranyAsaM karazodhanapUrvakam ॥ dehanyAsaM tataH pazcAnmahatyA mudrayA caret ॥ 16 ॥
Then he shall perform the rite of Karanyāsa after duly purifying it. Thereafter he shall perform the Dehanyāsa by means of the great Mudrā.

अंगन्यासं ततः कृत्वा शिवोक्तेन तु वर्त्मना ॥ वर्णन्यासं ततः कुर्याद्धस्तपादादिसंधिषु ॥ १७ ॥
aMganyAsaM tataH kRtvA zivoktena tu vartmanA ॥ varNanyAsaM tataH kuryAddhastapAdAdisaMdhiSu ॥ 17 ॥
After performing the rite of Aṅganyāsa in the manner mentioned by Śiva, he shall perform the Varṇanyāsa in the joints of hands, feet and other parts of the body.

षडंगानि ततो न्यस्य जातिषट्कयुतानि च ॥ दिग्बंधमाचरेत्पश्चादाग्नेयादि यथाक्रमम् ॥ १८ ॥
SaDaMgAni tato nyasya jAtiSaTkayutAni ca ॥ digbaMdhamAcaretpazcAdAgneyAdi yathAkramam ॥ 18 ॥
After the Nyāsa of the six limbs accompanied by six types, he shall bind the quarters from the south-east onwards.

यद्वा मूर्धादिपञ्चांगं न्यासमेव समाचरेत् ॥ तथा षडंगन्यासं च भूतशुद्ध्यादिकं विना ॥ १९ ॥
yadvA mUrdhAdipaJcAMgaM nyAsameva samAcaret ॥ tathA SaDaMganyAsaM ca bhUtazuddhyAdikaM vinA ॥ 19 ॥
Or he need perform only the Nyāsa of the five limbs beginning with the head. Similarly the Nyāsa of six limbs without the rites of purification etc. of the Bhūtas shall be performed.

एवं समासरूपेण कृत्वा देहात्मशोधनम् ॥ शिवभावमुपागम्य पूजयेत्परमेश्वरम् ॥ २० ॥
evaM samAsarUpeNa kRtvA dehAtmazodhanam ॥ zivabhAvamupAgamya pUjayetparamezvaram ॥ 20 ॥
Thus he shall succinctly perform the purification of the body and Ātman. Attaining the status of Śiva he shall worship Parameśvara.

अथ यस्यास्त्यवसरो नास्ति वा मतिविभ्रमः ॥ स विस्तीर्णेन कल्पेन न्यासकर्म समाचरेत् ॥ २१ ॥
atha yasyAstyavasaro nAsti vA mativibhramaH ॥ sa vistIrNena kalpena nyAsakarma samAcaret ॥ 21 ॥
He who has sufficient leisure and is not confused in mind shall perform the rite of Nyāsa in a detailed manner.

तत्राद्यो मातृकान्यासो ब्रह्मन्यासस्ततः परः ॥ तृतीयः प्रणवन्यासो हंसन्यासस्तदुत्तरः ॥ २२ ॥
tatrAdyo mAtRkAnyAso brahmanyAsastataH paraH ॥ tRtIyaH praNavanyAso haMsanyAsastaduttaraH ॥ 22 ॥
The first of these is the matrix, and the next is the Brahman. The third is the oṁkāra-nyasa, and the next is the swan-nyasa.

पञ्चमः कथ्यते सद्भिर्न्यासः पञ्चाक्षरात्मकः ॥ एतेष्वेकमनेकं वा कुर्यात्पूजादि कर्मसु ॥ २३ ॥
paJcamaH kathyate sadbhirnyAsaH paJcAkSarAtmakaH ॥ eteSvekamanekaM vA kuryAtpUjAdi karmasu ॥ 23 ॥
The fifth is called by the saintly the five-syllabled sacrifice. One should perform one or more of these ritualistic ceremonies, such as worship.

अकारं मूर्ध्नि विन्यस्य आकारं च ललाटके ॥ इं ईं च नेत्रयोस्तद्वतुं ऊं श्रवणयोस्तथा ॥ २४ ॥
akAraM mUrdhni vinyasya AkAraM ca lalATake ॥ iM IM ca netrayostadvatuM UM zravaNayostathA ॥ 24 ॥
The syllable a is placed on the head and the syllable a is placed on the forehead. Iṁ īm is the same for the eyes, and oom is for the ears.

कपोलयोश्चैव ळं ॡं नासापुटद्वये ॥ एमेमोष्ठद्वयोरोमौं दंतपंक्तिद्वयोः क्रमात् ॥ २५ ॥
kapolayozcaiva LaM lRRM nAsApuTadvaye ॥ ememoSThadvayoromauM daMtapaMktidvayoH kramAt ॥ 25 ॥
on the forehead and ळं ॡं on the two nostrils. These are the hairs on the lips and the two rows of teeth, one after the other.

अं जिह्वायामथो तालुन्यः प्रयोज्यो यथाक्रमम् ॥ कवर्गं दक्षिणे हस्ते न्यसेत्पञ्चसु संधिषु ॥ २६ ॥
aM jihvAyAmatho tAlunyaH prayojyo yathAkramam ॥ kavargaM dakSiNe haste nyasetpaJcasu saMdhiSu ॥ 26 ॥
Aṁ should be applied to the tongue and then to the palate in this order. Place the kavarga in the right hand at the five joints.

चवर्गं च तथा वामहस्तसंधिषु विन्यसेत् ॥ टवर्गं च तवर्गं च पादयोरुभयोरपि ॥ २७ ॥
cavargaM ca tathA vAmahastasaMdhiSu vinyaset ॥ TavargaM ca tavargaM ca pAdayorubhayorapi ॥ 27 ॥
Similarly, place the four squares on the joints of the left hand. The tavarga and tavarga are also used on both the legs.

पफौ तु पार्श्वयोः पृष्ठे नाभौ चापि बभौ ततः ॥ न्यसेन्मकारं हृदये त्वगादिषु यथाक्रमम् ॥ २८ ॥
paphau tu pArzvayoH pRSThe nAbhau cApi babhau tataH ॥ nyasenmakAraM hRdaye tvagAdiSu yathAkramam ॥ 28 ॥
There appeared to be puffs on the sides, back and navel. One should place the syllable m in the heart, skin and other parts of the body in order.

यकरादिसकारांतान्न्यसेत्सप्तसु धातुषु ॥ हंकारं हृदयस्यांतः क्षकारं भ्रूयुगांतरे ॥ २९ ॥
yakarAdisakArAMtAnnyasetsaptasu dhAtuSu ॥ haMkAraM hRdayasyAMtaH kSakAraM bhrUyugAMtare ॥ 29 ॥
The syllables ending in yakara and s should be placed in the seven elements. The syllable ham is situated within the heart, and the syllable k is situated between the eyebrows.

एवं वर्णान्प्रविन्यस्य पञ्चाशद्रुद्रवर्त्मना ॥ अंगवक्त्रकलाभेदात्पञ्च ब्रह्माणि विन्यसेत् ॥ ३० ॥
evaM varNAnpravinyasya paJcAzadrudravartmanA ॥ aMgavaktrakalAbhedAtpaJca brahmANi vinyaset ॥ 30 ॥
Thus he arranged the fifty varṇas according to the path of Lord Śiva. One should place the five Brahmans in the different parts of the body, mouth and art.

करन्यासाद्यमपि तैः कृत्वा वाथ न वा क्रमात् ॥ शिरोवदनहृद्गुह्यपादेष्वेतानि कल्पयेत् ॥ ३१ ॥
karanyAsAdyamapi taiH kRtvA vAtha na vA kramAt ॥ zirovadanahRdguhyapAdeSvetAni kalpayet ॥ 31 ॥
The Karanyāsa may or may not be performed through them. The Brahmans shall be fixed in the head, face, chest, private parts and legs.

ततश्चोर्ध्वादिवक्त्राणि पश्चिमांतानि कल्पयेत् ॥ ईशानस्य कलाः पञ्च पञ्चस्वेतेषु च क्रमात् ॥ ३२ ॥
tatazcordhvAdivaktrANi pazcimAMtAni kalpayet ॥ IzAnasya kalAH paJca paJcasveteSu ca kramAt ॥ 32 ॥
The Kalās of Īśāna are five; these are fixed in the five faces beginning with the one above and ending with the one in the west.

ततश्चतुर्षु वक्त्रेषु पुरुषस्य कला अपि ॥ चतस्रः प्रणिधातव्याः पूर्वादिक्रमयोगतः ॥ ३३ ॥
tatazcaturSu vaktreSu puruSasya kalA api ॥ catasraH praNidhAtavyAH pUrvAdikramayogataH ॥ 33 ॥
Then the four Kalās of Puruṣa shall be fixed in the four faces beginning with the one in the east.

हृत्कंठांसेषु नाभौ च कुक्षौ पृष्ठे च वक्षसि ॥ अघोरस्य कलाश्चाष्टौ पादयोरपि हस्तयोः ॥ ३४ ॥
hRtkaMThAMseSu nAbhau ca kukSau pRSThe ca vakSasi ॥ aghorasya kalAzcASTau pAdayorapi hastayoH ॥ 34 ॥
The heart, neck, thighs, navel, abdomen, back and chest are all situated. There are eight arts on the feet and hands of the Aghora.

पश्चात्त्रयोःदशकलाः पायुमेढ्रोरुजानुषु ॥ जंघास्फिक्कटिपार्श्वेषु वामदेवस्य भावयेत् ॥ ३५ ॥
pazcAttrayoHdazakalAH pAyumeDhrorujAnuSu ॥ jaMghAsphikkaTipArzveSu vAmadevasya bhAvayet ॥ 35 ॥
Afterwards, there are ten parts of the body in the abdomen, genitals, thighs and knees. One should meditate on the left side of the thighs, sphincter and waist.

घ्राणे शिरसि बाह्वोश्च कल्पयेत्कल्पवित्तमः ॥ अष्टत्रिंशत्कलान्यासमेवं कृत्वानुपूर्वशः ॥ ३६ ॥
ghrANe zirasi bAhvozca kalpayetkalpavittamaH ॥ aSTatriMzatkalAnyAsamevaM kRtvAnupUrvazaH ॥ 36 ॥
The best of the kalpas should be placed on the sense of smell, head and arms. In this way one should perform the thirty-eight arts in order.

पश्चात्प्रणवविद्धीमान्प्रणवन्यासमाचरेत् ॥ बाहुद्वये कूर्परयोस्तथा च मणिबन्धयोः ॥ ३७ ॥
pazcAtpraNavaviddhImAnpraNavanyAsamAcaret ॥ bAhudvaye kUrparayostathA ca maNibandhayoH ॥ 37 ॥
Afterwards, one who knows the oṁkāra should chant the oṁkāra. On both arms, on the torso, and on the wrists.

They also appeared on the sides, abdomen, thighs, thighs, legs and back. Having thus arranged the oṁkāra, one who is skilled in the practice of renunciation.

One should perform the swan-nyasa as described in the scriptures of Lord Śiva. After dividing the seed into the swan’s eyes and sense of smell,

विभज्य बाहुनेत्रास्यललाटे घ्राणयोरपि ॥ कक्षयोः स्कन्धयोश्चैव पार्श्वयोस्तनयोस्तथा ॥ ४० ॥
vibhajya bAhunetrAsyalalATe ghrANayorapi ॥ kakSayoH skandhayozcaiva pArzvayostanayostathA ॥ 40 ॥
Then he divided the arms, eyes, mouth, forehead and sense of smell. They also appeared on the waist, shoulders, sides and breasts.

kaThyoH pANyorgulphayozca yadvA paJcAMgavartmanA ॥ haMsanyAsamimaM kRtvA nyasetpaJcAkSarIM tataH ॥ 41 ॥
The five limbs of the body may be placed on the thighs, hands or ankles. After performing this mantra for the swan one should chant the five-syllable mantra.

yathA pUrvoktamArgeNa zivatvaM yena jAyate ॥ nAzivaH zivamabhyasyennAzivaH zivamarcayet ॥ 42 ॥
By the process described above, one can become Lord Śiva. One who is not auspicious should not practice Lord Śiva and one who is not auspicious should not worship Lord Śiva.

nAzivastu zivaM dhyAyennAzivamprApnuyAcchivam ॥ tasmAcchaivIM tanuM kRtvA tyaktvA ca pazubhAvanAm ॥ 43 ॥
One who is not auspicious should meditate on Lord Śiva, but one who is not auspicious should attain Lord Śiva. Therefore he assumed the body of Lord Śiva and gave up his animalistic attitude.

zivo 'hamiti saMcintya zaivaM karma samAcaret ॥ karmayajJastapoyajJo japayajJastaduttaraH ॥ dhyAnayajJo jJAnayajJaH paJca yajJAH prakIrtitAH ॥ 44 ॥
Thinking, “I am Lord Śiva,” one should perform the ritualistic ceremonies performed by Lord Śiva. The next sacrifice is karma-yajna, austerity-sacrifice and chanting-sacrifice. The five sacrifices mentioned above are the sacrifice of meditation and the sacrifice of knowledge.

karmayajJaratAH kecittapoyajJaratAH pare ॥ japayajJaratAzcAnye dhyAnayajJaratAstathA ॥ 45 ॥
Some of them were engaged in ritualistic ceremonies and others in austerities and sacrifices. Others were engaged in chanting mantras and performing sacrifices.

jJAnayajJaratAzcAnye viziSTAzcottarottaram ॥ kramayajJo dvidhA proktaH kAmAkAmavibhedataH ॥ 46 ॥
Others who were engaged in knowledge and sacrifice were increasingly distinguished There are two kinds of orderly sacrifices, namely desire and desire.

kAmAnkAmI tato bhuktvA kAmAsaktaH punarbhavet ॥ akAme rudrabhavane bhogAnbhuktvA tatazcyutaH ॥ 47 ॥
The lustful man then enjoys his desires and becomes attached to them again. After enjoying all kinds of pleasures in the abode of Lord Śiva, he fell down from there.

tapoyajJarato bhUtvA jAyate nAtra saMzayaH ॥ tapasvI ca punastasminbhogAn bhuktvA tatazcyutaH ॥ 48 ॥
There is no doubt that one is born engaged in austerities and sacrifices After enjoying all kinds of pleasures in that forest he became ascetic and then fell down.

japadhyAnarato bhUtvA jAyate bhuvi mAnavaH ॥ japadhyAnarato martyastadvaiziSTyavazAdiha ॥ 49 ॥
A human being is born on earth engaged in chanting and meditating. A mortal who is engaged in chanting and meditating on the Supreme Personality of Godhead is unique in this world.

jJAnaM labdhvAcirAdeva zivasAyujyamApnuyAt ॥ tasmAnmukto zivAjJaptaH karmayajJo 'pi dehinAm ॥ 50 ॥
After obtaining this knowledge, one will soon attain the association of Lord Śiva. Therefore, even the sacrifice of karma, which is commanded by Lord Śiva, is liberated for the embodied souls.

अकामः कामसंयुक्तो बन्धायैव भविष्यति ॥ तस्मात्पञ्चसु यज्ञेषु ध्यानज्ञानपरो भवेत् ॥ ५१ ॥
akAmaH kAmasaMyukto bandhAyaiva bhaviSyati ॥ tasmAtpaJcasu yajJeSu dhyAnajJAnaparo bhavet ॥ 51 ॥
He who is unwilling and attached to lust will become bound by it Therefore one should concentrate on meditation and knowledge in the five sacrifices.

By meditation and knowledge one who has crossed the ocean of material existence He is free from the evils of violence and others and is pure as the means of consciousness.

The sacrifice of meditation is the highest and bestows the fruits of liberation. Just as those who work outside do not enjoy the fruits of their labor.

dRSTvA narendrabhavane tadvadatrApi karmiNaH ॥ dhyAninAM hi vapuH sUkSmaM bhavetpratyakSamaizvaram ॥ 54 ॥
Seeing him in the palace of the king the same thing happened here as well The subtle body of the meditators becomes directly manifest to the Supreme Lord.

yatheha karmaNAM sthUlaM mRtkASThAdyaiH prakalpitam ॥ dhyAnayajJaratAstasmAddevAnpASANamRNmayAn ॥ 55 ॥
Just as the gross materials of clay, wood and other materials are constructed in this world, Therefore, engaged in meditation and sacrifice, the demigods were made of stone and clay.

नात्यंतं प्रतिपद्यंते शिवयाथात्म्यवेदनात् ॥ आत्मस्थं यः शिवं त्यक्त्वा बहिरभ्यर्चयेन्नरः ॥ ५६ ॥
nAtyaMtaM pratipadyaMte zivayAthAtmyavedanAt ॥ AtmasthaM yaH zivaM tyaktvA bahirabhyarcayennaraH ॥ 56 ॥
They do not attain to the extreme because of the pain of the reality of Lord Śiva. Anyone who worships Lord Śiva outside the self should worship him externally.

hastasthaM phalamutsRjya lihetkUrparamAtmanaH ॥ jJAnAddhyAnaM bhaveddhyAnAjjJAnaM bhUyaH pravartate ॥ 57 ॥
Leaving the fruit in his hand, he should lick his torso. From knowledge one attains meditation, and from meditation knowledge arises again.

tadubhAbhyAM bhavenmuktistasmAddhyAnarato bhavet ॥ dvAdazAnte tathA mUrdhni lalATe bhrUyugAntare ॥ 58 ॥
By these two processes one attains liberation, and therefore one should engage in meditation. At the end of the twelfth, on the forehead, between the eyebrows.

At the tip of the nose, on the cheeks, on the neck and on the heart Or in the navel, in the eternal place, with a mind fixed in faith.

One should worship the Lord and Goddess Durgā by performing external sacrifices. Or else one should worship the deity daily in the form of a deity or in the form of a deity.

vahnau vA sthaNDile vAtha bhaktyA vittAnusArataH ॥ athavAMtarbahizcaiva pUjayetparamezvaram ॥ aMtaryAgarataH pUjAM bahiH kurvIta vA na vA ॥ 61 ॥
One may offer oblations to the fire or to the ground with devotion according to one’s means. Or else one should worship the Supreme Lord inside and outside. Whether one should perform worship outside the inner chamber or not.
