upamanyuruvAca ॥ ataH paraM pravakSyAmi sAdhakaM nAma nAmataH ॥ saMskAramantramAhAtmyaM kathane sUcitaM mayA ॥ 1 ॥
Upamanyu said:— Hereafter I shall explain the consecratory rite ‘Sādhaka’ indicated by me while explaining the greatness of the mantra.

संपूज्य मंडले देवं स्थाप्य कुम्भे च पूर्ववत् ॥ हुत्वा शिष्यमनुष्णीषं प्रापयेद्भुवि मंडले ॥ २ ॥
saMpUjya maMDale devaM sthApya kumbhe ca pUrvavat ॥ hutvA ziSyamanuSNISaM prApayedbhuvi maMDale ॥ 2 ॥
As before the lord shall be worshipped in the Maṇḍala and the vessels and the homa performed. The disciple shall be brought to the Maṇḍala without his headdress.

पूर्वांतं पूर्ववत्कृत्वा हुत्वाहुतिशतं तथा ॥ संतर्प्य मूलमन्त्रेण कलशैर्देशिकोत्तमः ॥ ३ ॥
pUrvAMtaM pUrvavatkRtvA hutvAhutizataM tathA ॥ saMtarpya mUlamantreNa kalazairdezikottamaH ॥ 3 ॥
After performing the same ritualistic ceremonies as before one should offer oblations in the form of a hundred oblations The best of the countrymen satisfied him with the root mantra and with urns.

सन्दीप्य च यथापूर्वं कृत्वा पूर्वोदितं क्रमात् ॥ अभिषिच्य यथापूर्वं प्रदद्यान्मन्त्रमुत्तमम् ॥ ४ ॥
sandIpya ca yathApUrvaM kRtvA pUrvoditaM kramAt ॥ abhiSicya yathApUrvaM pradadyAnmantramuttamam ॥ 4 ॥
After setting fire to the fire, perform the prescribed rituals in the same order as before. After consecrating him as before he should chant the best mantra.

तत्र विद्योपदेशांतं कृत्वा विस्तरशः क्रमात् ॥ पुष्पाम्बुना शिशोः पाणौ विद्यां शैवीं समर्पयेत् ॥ ५ ॥
tatra vidyopadezAMtaM kRtvA vistarazaH kramAt ॥ puSpAmbunA zizoH pANau vidyAM zaivIM samarpayet ॥ 5 ॥
There, after imparting the Śaivitc lore in detail, he shall place this in the disciple’s hand with water from the flowers.

तवैहिकामुष्मिकयोः सर्वसिद्धिफलप्रदः ॥ भवत्येव महामन्त्रः प्रसादात्परमेष्ठिनः ॥ ६ ॥
tavaihikAmuSmikayoH sarvasiddhiphalapradaH ॥ bhavatyeva mahAmantraH prasAdAtparameSThinaH ॥ 6 ॥
‘By the grace of the supreme lord this great Mantra shall certainly confer on you the Siddhis both of this world and the next one.’

इत्युत्वा देवमभ्यर्च्य लब्धानुज्ञः शिवाद्गुरुः ॥ साधनं शिवयोगं च साधकाय समादिशेत् ॥ ७ ॥
ityutvA devamabhyarcya labdhAnujJaH zivAdguruH ॥ sAdhanaM zivayogaM ca sAdhakAya samAdizet ॥ 7 ॥
After saying this, the preceptor shall worship lord Śiva and secure his formal permission. He shall then impart to the aspirant the Yoga of Śiva, the means of liberation.

तच्छ्रुत्वा गुरुसंदेशं क्रमशो मंत्रसाधकः ॥ पुरतो विनियोगस्य मन्त्रसाधनमाचरेत् ॥ ८ ॥
tacchrutvA gurusaMdezaM kramazo maMtrasAdhakaH ॥ purato viniyogasya mantrasAdhanamAcaret ॥ 8 ॥
Hearing the message of his spiritual master, he gradually performed the mantra. One should perform the mantra means of the initiation in front of him.

साधनं मूलमन्त्रस्य पुरश्चरणमुच्यते ॥ पुरतश्चरणीयत्वाद्विनियोगाख्यकर्मणः ॥ ९ ॥
sAdhanaM mUlamantrasya purazcaraNamucyate ॥ puratazcaraNIyatvAdviniyogAkhyakarmaNaH ॥ 9 ॥
The means of chanting the root mantra is called Purascaraṇa. Because of the steps to be taken in front of the action called viniyoga.

नात्यन्तं करणीयन्तु मुमुक्षोर्मन्त्रसाधनम् ॥ कृतन्तु तदिहान्यत्र तास्यापि शुभदं भवेत् ॥ १० ॥
nAtyantaM karaNIyantu mumukSormantrasAdhanam ॥ kRtantu tadihAnyatra tAsyApi zubhadaM bhavet ॥ 10 ॥
A devotee who desires salvation need not practise the mantra too often. If practised moderately it is auspicious here and hereafter.

शुभे ऽहनि शुभे देशे काले वा दोषवर्जिते ॥ शुक्लदन्तनखः स्नातः कृतपूर्वाह्णिकक्रियः ॥ ११ ॥
zubhe 'hani zubhe deze kAle vA doSavarjite ॥ zukladantanakhaH snAtaH kRtapUrvAhNikakriyaH ॥ 11 ॥
On an auspicious day, in an auspicious place or at an auspicious time, free from faults, He took a bath with white teeth and nails and performed his morning rituals.

अलंकृत्य यथा लब्धैर्गंधमाल्यविभूषणैः ॥ सोष्णीषः सोत्तरासंगः सर्वशुक्लसमाहितः ॥ १२ ॥
alaMkRtya yathA labdhairgaMdhamAlyavibhUSaNaiH ॥ soSNISaH sottarAsaMgaH sarvazuklasamAhitaH ॥ 12 ॥
They decorated the city as they could with fragrant flowers, garlands and ornaments. Soṣṇīṣa, Sottarāsanga, and all-white.

देवालये गृहे ऽन्यस्मिन्देशे वा सुमनोहरे ॥ सुखेनाभ्यस्तपूर्वेण त्वासनेन कृतासनः ॥ १३ ॥
devAlaye gRhe 'nyasmindeze vA sumanohare ॥ sukhenAbhyastapUrveNa tvAsanena kRtAsanaH ॥ 13 ॥
In a temple, at home or in any other pleasant place He was comfortably seated in a previously accustomed seat.

तनुं कृत्वात्मनः शैवीं शिवशास्त्रोक्तवर्त्मना ॥ संपूज्य देवदेवेशं नकुलीश्वरमीश्वरम् ॥ १४ ॥
tanuM kRtvAtmanaH zaivIM zivazAstroktavartmanA ॥ saMpUjya devadevezaM nakulIzvaramIzvaram ॥ 14 ॥
Having assumed the form of Lord Śiva, he followed the path prescribed in the scriptures of Lord Śiva. Having worshiped lord of the gods and goddesses lord of Nakuli.

निवेद्य पायसं तस्मै समप्याराधनं क्रमात् ॥ प्रणिपत्य च तं देवं प्राप्तानुज्ञश्च तन्मुखात् ॥ १५ ॥
nivedya pAyasaM tasmai samapyArAdhanaM kramAt ॥ praNipatya ca taM devaM prAptAnujJazca tanmukhAt ॥ 15 ॥
Offering payasam to the Lord, one after another worshiped Him. He bowed down to the god and received permission from his mouth.

कोटिवारं तदर्धं वा तदर्धं वा जपेच्छिवम् ॥ लक्षविंशतिकं वापि दशलक्षमथापि वा ॥ १६ ॥
koTivAraM tadardhaM vA tadardhaM vA japecchivam ॥ lakSaviMzatikaM vApi dazalakSamathApi vA ॥ 16 ॥
One should chant Lord Śiva one crore times or one and a half times. Twenty lakhs or ten lakhs.

ततश्च पायसाक्षारलवणैकमिताशनः ॥ अहिंसकः क्षमी शांतो दांतश्चैव सदा भवेत् ॥ १७ ॥
tatazca pAyasAkSAralavaNaikamitAzanaH ॥ ahiMsakaH kSamI zAMto dAMtazcaiva sadA bhavet ॥ 17 ॥
Thereafter his diet shall be limited in quantity and confined to milk pudding and such other as is devoid of salt and acidity. He shall not be violent. He shall be forbearing, quiet and self-possessed for ever.

अलाभे पायसस्याश्नन्फलमूलादिकानि वा ॥ विहितानि शिवेनैव विशिष्टान्युत्तरोत्तरम् ॥ १८ ॥
alAbhe pAyasasyAznanphalamUlAdikAni vA ॥ vihitAni zivenaiva viziSTAnyuttarottaram ॥ 18 ॥
If milk pudding is not available he shall take fruits and roots. They are ordained by Śiva himself and in the series of order gradually they are better.

चरुं भक्ष्यमथो सक्तुकणान्यावकमेव च ॥ शाकं पयो दधि घृतं मूलं फलमथोदकम् ॥ १९ ॥
caruM bhakSyamatho saktukaNAnyAvakameva ca ॥ zAkaM payo dadhi ghRtaM mUlaM phalamathodakam ॥ 19 ॥
They also offered charm, foodstuffs, and mixed grains of rice. Vegetables, milk, curd, butter, roots, fruits and water.

अभिमंत्र्य च मन्त्रेण भक्ष्यभोज्यादिकानि च ॥ साधने ऽस्मिन्विशेषेण नित्यं भुञ्जीत वाग्यतः ॥ २० ॥
abhimaMtrya ca mantreNa bhakSyabhojyAdikAni ca ॥ sAdhane 'sminvizeSeNa nityaM bhuJjIta vAgyataH ॥ 20 ॥
After chanting mantras, he offered food and drink to the demigods. In this particular meditation one should always eat with restraint of speech.

मन्त्राष्टशतपूतेन जलेन शुचिना व्रती ॥ स्नायान्नदीनदोत्थेन प्रोक्षयेद्वाथ शक्तितः ॥ २१ ॥
mantrASTazatapUtena jalena zucinA vratI ॥ snAyAnnadInadotthena prokSayedvAtha zaktitaH ॥ 21 ॥
He shall take bath in the water from east-flowing or west-flowing rivers and purify himself by repeating hundred and eight mantras or sprinkle himself as strength permits him.

तर्पयेच्च तथा नित्यं जुहुयाच्च शिवानले ॥ सप्तभिः पञ्चभिर्द्रव्यैस्त्रिभिर्वाथ घृतेन वा ॥ २२ ॥
tarpayecca tathA nityaM juhuyAcca zivAnale ॥ saptabhiH paJcabhirdravyaistribhirvAtha ghRtena vA ॥ 22 ॥
He shall perform the rites of Tarpaṇa and homa in the Śaivite fire with seven, five or three materials of worship or with ghee alone.

इत्थं भक्त्या शिवं शैवो यः साधयति साधकः ॥ तस्येहामुत्र दुष्प्रापं न किंचिदपि विद्यते ॥ २३ ॥
itthaM bhaktyA zivaM zaivo yaH sAdhayati sAdhakaH ॥ tasyehAmutra duSprApaM na kiMcidapi vidyate ॥ 23 ॥
Nothing is inaccessible in this world or the next to him who is a devotee of Śiva and who is an aspirant practising the mantra of Śiva thus with devotion.

अथवा ऽहरहर्मंत्रं जपेदेकाग्रमानसः ॥ अनश्नन्नेव साहस्रं विना मन्त्रस्य साधनम् ॥ २४ ॥
athavA 'haraharmaMtraM japedekAgramAnasaH ॥ anaznanneva sAhasraM vinA mantrasya sAdhanam ॥ 24 ॥
Or he shall perform the Japa of the mantra a thousand times everyday, with full concentration of the mind. He shall not take food before the thousand Japas are completed.

न तस्य दुर्लभं किंचिन्न तस्यास्त्यशुभं क्वचित् ॥ इह विद्यां श्रियं सौख्यं लब्ध्वा मुक्तिं च विंदति ॥ २५ ॥
na tasya durlabhaM kiMcinna tasyAstyazubhaM kvacit ॥ iha vidyAM zriyaM saukhyaM labdhvA muktiM ca viMdati ॥ 25 ॥
Nothing is difficult of access to him. Nothing is inauspicious to him. He attains learning, prosperity, happiness, and salvation.

साधने विनियोगे च नित्ये नैमित्तिके तथा ॥ जपेज्जलैर्भस्मना च स्नात्वा मन्त्रेण च क्रमात् ॥ २६ ॥
sAdhane viniyoge ca nitye naimittike tathA ॥ japejjalairbhasmanA ca snAtvA mantreNa ca kramAt ॥ 26 ॥
Whether in the course of practice or application, whether done as a Nitya rite or a Naimittika rite he shall perform the Japa after taking bath with water or with Bhasma.

शुचिर्बद्धशिखस्सूत्री सपवित्रकरस्तथा ॥ धृतत्रिपुंड्ररुद्राक्षो विद्यां पञ्चाक्षरीं जपेत् ॥ २७ ॥
zucirbaddhazikhassUtrI sapavitrakarastathA ॥ dhRtatripuMDrarudrAkSo vidyAM paJcAkSarIM japet ॥ 27 ॥
He shall perform the Japa of the five-syllabled mantra, pure in person and mind, with the tuft tied up, wearing the sacred thread on the body and having the Pavitra round the finger. He shall have the Tripuṇḍra marks and shall wear Rudrākṣa beads.
