zrIkRSNa uvAca ॥ bhagavAnmaMtramAhAtmyaM bhavatA kathitaM prabho ॥ tatprayogavidhAnaM ca sAkSAcchrutisamaM yathA ॥ 1 ॥
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said:— My dear lord, you have explained the glories of this holy mantra. The method of using the Vedas is directly equal to that of the Vedas.

idAnIM zrotumicchAmi zivasaMskAramuttamam ॥ maMtrasaMgrahaNe kiMcitsUcitanna tu vismRtam ॥ 2 ॥
Now I wish to hear about the excellent ritualistic ceremonies performed by Lord Śiva. Something was indicated in the collection of mantras but not forgotten.

उपमन्युरुवाच ॥ हन्त ते कथयिष्यामि सर्वपापविशोधनम् ॥ संस्कारं परमं पुण्यं शिवेन पतिभाषितम् ॥ ३ ॥
upamanyuruvAca ॥ hanta te kathayiSyAmi sarvapApavizodhanam ॥ saMskAraM paramaM puNyaM zivena patibhASitam ॥ 3 ॥
Upamanyu said:— Well, I shall mention to you the holy and sin-destroying details of consecration as explained by Śiva.

सम्यक्कृताधिकारः स्यात्पूजादिषु नरो यतः ॥ संस्कारः कथ्यते तेन षडध्वपरिशोधनम् ॥ ४ ॥
samyakkRtAdhikAraH syAtpUjAdiSu naro yataH ॥ saMskAraH kathyate tena SaDadhvaparizodhanam ॥ 4 ॥
The consecration is so called because thereby the devotee is authorised in a splendid manner. It is the mode of purifying the six paths.

दीयते येन विज्ञानं क्षीयते पाशबंधनम् ॥ तस्मात्संस्कार एवायं दीक्षेत्यपि च कथ्यते ॥ ५ ॥
dIyate yena vijJAnaM kSIyate pAzabaMdhanam ॥ tasmAtsaMskAra evAyaM dIkSetyapi ca kathyate ॥ 5 ॥
The same Saṃskāra is called initiation because thereby the perfect knowledge is imparted and the bondage of Pāśa is quelled.

शांभवी चैव शाक्ती च मांत्री चैव शिवागमे ॥ दीक्षोपदिश्यते त्रेधा शिवेन परमात्मना ॥ ६ ॥
zAMbhavI caiva zAktI ca mAMtrI caiva zivAgame ॥ dIkSopadizyate tredhA zivena paramAtmanA ॥ 6 ॥
The initiation as ordained by Śiva the great Ātman in the Śivāgama is threefold—pertaining to Śiva, Śakti and mantra.

गुरोरालोकमात्रेण स्पर्शात्संभाषणादपि ॥ सद्यस्संज्ञा भवेज्जंतोः पाशोपक्षयकारिणी ॥ ७ ॥
gurorAlokamAtreNa sparzAtsaMbhASaNAdapi ॥ sadyassaMjJA bhavejjaMtoH pAzopakSayakAriNI ॥ 7 ॥
From the mere glance of the spiritual master, from touch, from conversation, The consciousness of the living being is immediately attained and the noose is weakened.

सा दीक्षा शांभवी प्रोक्ता सा पुनर्भिद्यते द्विधा ॥ तीव्रा तीव्रतरा चेति पाशो पक्षयभेदतः ॥ ८ ॥
sA dIkSA zAMbhavI proktA sA punarbhidyate dvidhA ॥ tIvrA tIvratarA ceti pAzo pakSayabhedataH ॥ 8 ॥
That initiation is called Śāmbhavī, and it is again divided into two kinds. The rope is called intense and intense, according to the wings.

यया स्यान्निर्वृतिः सद्यस्सैव तीव्रतरा मता ॥ तीव्रा तु जीवतोत्यंतं पुंसः पापविशोधिका ॥ ९ ॥
yayA syAnnirvRtiH sadyassaiva tIvratarA matA ॥ tIvrA tu jIvatotyaMtaM puMsaH pApavizodhikA ॥ 9 ॥
That is Tivratara whereby the bliss is immediately attained. The acute one purifies the sin of the living man effectively.

शक्ती ज्ञानवती दीक्षा शिष्यदेहं प्रविश्य तु ॥ गुरुणा योगमार्गेण क्रियते ज्ञानचक्षुषा ॥ १० ॥
zaktI jJAnavatI dIkSA ziSyadehaM pravizya tu ॥ guruNA yogamArgeNa kriyate jJAnacakSuSA ॥ 10 ॥
The Śaktī form of initiation coupled with knowledge is performed by the preceptor with knowledge for his vision, after entering the body of the disciple along the path of Yoga.

मांत्री क्रियावती दीक्षा कुंडमंडलपूर्विका ॥ मंदमंदतरोद्देशात्कर्तव्या गुरुणा बहिः ॥ ११ ॥
mAMtrI kriyAvatI dIkSA kuMDamaMDalapUrvikA ॥ maMdamaMdataroddezAtkartavyA guruNA bahiH ॥ 11 ॥
The Mantra form of initiation is coupled with the rites performed in the sacrificial altar. This has to be performed by the preceptor (guru) externally with respect to the dull-witted disciple.

शक्तिपातानुसारेण शिष्यो ऽनुग्रहमर्हति ॥ शैवधर्मानुसारस्य तन्मूलत्वात्समासतः ॥ १२ ॥
zaktipAtAnusAreNa ziSyo 'nugrahamarhati ॥ zaivadharmAnusArasya tanmUlatvAtsamAsataH ॥ 12 ॥
The disciple receives blessing in respect of his Śakti, because the pursuit of Śaivite virtue has that as the condition in brief.

यत्र शक्तिर्न पतिता तत्र शुद्धिर्न जायते ॥ न विद्या न शिवाचारो न मुक्तिर्न च सिद्धयः ॥ १३ ॥
yatra zaktirna patitA tatra zuddhirna jAyate ॥ na vidyA na zivAcAro na muktirna ca siddhayaH ॥ 13 ॥
Where the Śakti is not grasped neither purity nor Vidyā nor right conduct nor salvation nor any achievement is secured.

तस्माल्लिंगानि संवीक्ष्य शक्तिपातस्य भूयसः ॥ ज्ञानेन क्रियया वाथ गुरुश्शिष्यं विशोधयेत् ॥ १४ ॥
tasmAlliMgAni saMvIkSya zaktipAtasya bhUyasaH ॥ jJAnena kriyayA vAtha guruzziSyaM vizodhayet ॥ 14 ॥
Hence, observing the symbols for securing Śakti, the preceptor shall purify and consecrate the disciple either by knowledge or by means of rites.

यो ऽन्यथा कुरुते मोहात्स विनश्यति दुर्मतिः ॥ तस्मात्सर्वप्रकारेण गुरुः शिष्यं परीक्षयेत् ॥ १५ ॥
yo 'nyathA kurute mohAtsa vinazyati durmatiH ॥ tasmAtsarvaprakAreNa guruH ziSyaM parIkSayet ॥ 15 ॥
He who performs otherwise is the wicked person who perishes. Hence the preceptor shall test the disciple in every respect.

लक्षणं शक्तिपातस्य प्रबोधानंदसंभवः ॥ सा यस्मात्परमा शक्तिः प्रबोधानंदरूपिणी ॥ १६ ॥
lakSaNaM zaktipAtasya prabodhAnaMdasaMbhavaH ॥ sA yasmAtparamA zaktiH prabodhAnaMdarUpiNI ॥ 16 ॥
Since Śakti is enlightenment and bliss, the two are the signs of its manifestation.

आनंदबोधयोर्लिंगमंतःकरणविक्रियाः ॥ यथा स्यात्कंपरोमांचस्वरनेत्रांगविक्रियाः ॥ १७ ॥
AnaMdabodhayorliMgamaMtaHkaraNavikriyAH ॥ yathA syAtkaMparomAMcasvaranetrAMgavikriyAH ॥ 17 ॥
The symbol of bliss and enlightenment is constituted by the changes and alterations in the mind in the manner of shivering, horripilation and alterations in the voice, eyes and other parts of the body.

शिष्योपि लक्षणैरेभिः कुर्याद्गुरुपरीक्षणम् ॥ तत्संपर्कैः शिवार्चादौ संगतैर्वाथ तद्गतैः ॥ १८ ॥
ziSyopi lakSaNairebhiH kuryAdguruparIkSaNam ॥ tatsaMparkaiH zivArcAdau saMgatairvAtha tadgataiH ॥ 18 ॥
The disciple too shall carry out the test of the preceptor through these characteristic symbols and contacts with him during the worship of Śiva or through those associated with him or resorting to him.

शिष्यस्तु शिक्षणीयत्वाद्गुरोर्गौरवकारणात् ॥ १९ तस्मात्सर्वप्रयत्नेन गुरोर्गौरवमाचरेत् ॥ १९ ॥
ziSyastu zikSaNIyatvAdgurorgauravakAraNAt ॥ 19 tasmAtsarvaprayatnena gurorgauravamAcaret ॥ 19 ॥
The test for the disciple has in view his worthiness of being taught and for the preceptor the gravity of his pursuit. Hence the disciple shall endeavour in every respect to honour the preceptor.

यो गुरुस्स शिवः प्रोक्तो यः शिवः स गुरुः स्मृतः ॥ गुरुर्वा शिव एवाथ विद्याकारेण संस्थितः ॥ २० ॥
yo gurussa zivaH prokto yaH zivaH sa guruH smRtaH ॥ gururvA ziva evAtha vidyAkAreNa saMsthitaH ॥ 20 ॥
He who is the preceptor is Śiva and he who is Śiva is the preceptor. Whether the preceptor or Śiva the same person is stationed in the form of knowledge.

यथा शिवस्तथा विद्या यथा विद्या तथा गुरुः ॥ शिवविद्या गुरूणां च पूजया सदृशं फलम् ॥ २१ ॥
yathA zivastathA vidyA yathA vidyA tathA guruH ॥ zivavidyA gurUNAM ca pUjayA sadRzaM phalam ॥ 21 ॥
As is Śiva so the knowledge. As is the knowledge so is the preceptor. The benefit is similar in the worship of Śiva, knowledge or the preceptor.

सर्वदेवात्मकश्चासौ सर्वमंत्रमयो गुरुः ॥ तस्मात्सर्वप्रयत्नेन यस्याज्ञां शिरसा वहेत् ॥ २२ ॥
sarvadevAtmakazcAsau sarvamaMtramayo guruH ॥ tasmAtsarvaprayatnena yasyAjJAM zirasA vahet ॥ 22 ॥
The preceptor is in the form of gods and the mantras. Hence every endeavour shall be made to accept his behest with bent head.

श्रेयो ऽर्थी यदि गुर्वाज्ञां मनसापि न लंघयेत् ॥ गुर्वाज्ञापालको यस्माज्ज्ञानसंपत्तिमश्नुते ॥ २३ ॥
zreyo 'rthI yadi gurvAjJAM manasApi na laMghayet ॥ gurvAjJApAlako yasmAjjJAnasaMpattimaznute ॥ 23 ॥
The seeker of welfare shall never even think of transgressing the commands of the preceptor, because only he who carries out the behests of the preceptor attains the wealth of knowledge.

गच्छंस्तिष्ठन्स्वपन्भुंजन्नान्यत्कर्म समाचरेत् ॥ समक्षं यदि कुर्वीत सर्वं चानुज्ञया गुरोः ॥ २४ ॥
gacchaMstiSThansvapanbhuMjannAnyatkarma samAcaret ॥ samakSaM yadi kurvIta sarvaM cAnujJayA guroH ॥ 24 ॥
He shall not do any thing without the permission of the preceptor, nor even walk, stand, sleep or eat. Especially if the work is performed in the presence of the preceptor it must necessarily be with his permission.

गुरोर्गृहे समक्षं वा न यथेष्टासनो भवेत् ॥ गुरुर्देवो यतः साक्षात्तद्गृहं देवमन्दिरम् ॥ २५ ॥
gurorgRhe samakSaM vA na yatheSTAsano bhavet ॥ gururdevo yataH sAkSAttadgRhaM devamandiram ॥ 25 ॥
Since the preceptor is the lord himself and his house is the temple of the lord, the disciple shall not sit as he pleases in the house of the preceptor or in his presence.

पापिनां च यथा संगात्तत्पापात्पतितो भवेत् ॥ यथेह वह्निसंपर्कान्मलं त्यजति कांचनम् ॥ २६ ॥
pApinAM ca yathA saMgAttatpApAtpatito bhavet ॥ yatheha vahnisaMparkAnmalaM tyajati kAMcanam ॥ 26 ॥
Associating with sinners will lead to sinful reactions. Just as gold in this world gives up its impurities when it comes into contact with fire.

तथैव गुरुसंपर्कात्पापं त्यजति मानवः ॥ यथा वह्निसमीपस्थो घृतकुम्भो विलीयते ॥ २७ ॥
tathaiva gurusaMparkAtpApaM tyajati mAnavaH ॥ yathA vahnisamIpastho ghRtakumbho vilIyate ॥ 27 ॥
Similarly, by contact with the spiritual master, a human being renounces all sins. Just as a pot of ghee near a fire melts,

तथा पापं विलीयेत ह्याचार्यस्य समीपतः ॥ यथा प्रज्वलितो वह्निः शुष्कमार्द्रं च निर्दहेत् ॥ २८ ॥
tathA pApaM vilIyeta hyAcAryasya samIpataH ॥ yathA prajvalito vahniH zuSkamArdraM ca nirdahet ॥ 28 ॥
In this way sin will be dissolved in the presence of the teacher. Just as a blazing fire burns up dry and wet materials.

तथायमपि संतुष्टो गुरुः पापं क्षणाद्दहेत् ॥ मनसा कर्मणा वाचा गुरोः क्रोधं न कारयेत् ॥ २९ ॥
tathAyamapi saMtuSTo guruH pApaM kSaNAddahet ॥ manasA karmaNA vAcA guroH krodhaM na kArayet ॥ 29 ॥
Even if this spiritual master is satisfied he will burn away sin instantly One should not anger one’s spiritual master by one’s mind, actions or words.

तस्य क्रोधेन दह्यंते ह्यायुःश्रीज्ञानसत्क्रियाः ॥ तत्क्रोधकारिणो ये स्युस्तेषां यज्ञाश्च निष्फलाः ॥ ३० ॥
tasya krodhena dahyaMte hyAyuHzrIjJAnasatkriyAH ॥ tatkrodhakAriNo ye syusteSAM yajJAzca niSphalAH ॥ 30 ॥
His anger burns away his life, beauty, knowledge and good deeds. Those who incur the wrath of the Lord their sacrifices are in vain.

यमश्च नियमाश्चैव नात्र कार्या विचारणा ॥ गुरोर्विरुद्धं यद्वाक्यं न वदेज्जातुचिन्नरः ॥ ३१ ॥
yamazca niyamAzcaiva nAtra kAryA vicAraNA ॥ gurorviruddhaM yadvAkyaM na vadejjAtucinnaraH ॥ 31 ॥
There is no need to think about the rules and regulations Anyone who is born in the world should never speak anything against his spiritual master.

वदेद्यदि महामोहाद्रौरवं नरकं व्रजेत् ॥ मनसा कर्मणा वाचा गुरुमुद्दिश्य यत्नतः ॥ ३२ ॥
vadedyadi mahAmohAdrauravaM narakaM vrajet ॥ manasA karmaNA vAcA gurumuddizya yatnataH ॥ 32 ॥
If one speaks these words out of great delusion, he will go to hell. One should endeavor to address the spiritual master by one’s mind, actions and words.

श्रेयोर्थी चेन्नरो धीमान्न मिथ्याचारमाचरेत् ॥ गुरोर्हितं प्रियं कुर्यादादिष्टो वा न वा सदा ॥ ३३ ॥
zreyorthI cennaro dhImAnna mithyAcAramAcaret ॥ gurorhitaM priyaM kuryAdAdiSTo vA na vA sadA ॥ 33 ॥
If a wise man seeks the best for himself, he should not engage in false conduct. Whether instructed or not, one should always do what pleases the spiritual master.

असमक्षं समक्षं वा तस्य कार्यं समाचरेत् ॥ इत्थमाचारवान्भक्तो नित्यमुद्युक्तमानसः ॥ ३४ ॥
asamakSaM samakSaM vA tasya kAryaM samAcaret ॥ itthamAcAravAnbhakto nityamudyuktamAnasaH ॥ 34 ॥
Whether he is not present or not, he should perform his duties. Thus conducted by the devotee he always remained steadfast in mind.

गुरुप्रियकरः शिष्यः शैवधर्मांस्ततो ऽर्हति ॥ गुरुश्चेद्गुणवान्प्राज्ञः परमानंदभासकः ॥ ३५ ॥
gurupriyakaraH ziSyaH zaivadharmAMstato 'rhati ॥ guruzcedguNavAnprAjJaH paramAnaMdabhAsakaH ॥ 35 ॥
A disciple who pleases his spiritual master then deserves the religious duties of Lord Śiva. If the spiritual master is virtuous he is wise and reflects supreme bliss.

तत्त्वविच्छिवसंसक्तो मुक्तिदो न तु चापरः ॥ ३६ संवित्संजननं तत्त्वं परमानंदसंभवम् ॥ ३६ ॥
tattvavicchivasaMsakto muktido na tu cAparaH ॥ 36 saMvitsaMjananaM tattvaM paramAnaMdasaMbhavam ॥ 36 ॥
He who knows the Absolute Truth and is attached to Lord Śiva gives liberation, and no one else. 36 The essence that generates consciousness is the source of supreme bliss.

तत्तत्त्वं विदितं येन स एवानंददर्शकः ॥ न पुनर्नाममात्रेण संविदारहितस्तु यः ॥ ३७ ॥
tattattvaM viditaM yena sa evAnaMdadarzakaH ॥ na punarnAmamAtreNa saMvidArahitastu yaH ॥ 37 ॥
He who knows that Absolute Truth is the seer of bliss He who is devoid of consciousness by name alone.

अन्योन्यं तारयेन्नौका किं शिला तारयेच्छिलाम् ॥ एतस्या नाममात्रेण मुक्तिर्वै नाममात्रिका ॥ ३८ ॥
anyonyaM tArayennaukA kiM zilA tArayecchilAm ॥ etasyA nAmamAtreNa muktirvai nAmamAtrikA ॥ 38 ॥
Two boats can carry each other across the river. A piece of rock cannot take another piece of rock across the river. If the preceptor is nominal, the liberation too is nominal.

यैः पुनर्विदितं तत्त्वं ते मुक्ता मोचयन्त्यपि ॥ तत्त्वहीने कुतो बोधः कुतो ह्यात्मपरिग्रहः ॥ ३९ ॥
yaiH punarviditaM tattvaM te muktA mocayantyapi ॥ tattvahIne kuto bodhaH kuto hyAtmaparigrahaH ॥ 39 ॥
Those by whom this principle is known are liberated and can liberate others. There can be no enlightenment, no realisation of the self in one who is devoid of principles.

He who is devoid of realisation is an animal. One urged by an animal cannot eschew his animal nature.

vatsarAdapi ziSyeNa so 'nyaM gurumupAzrayet ॥ gurumanyaM prapanne 'pi nAvamanyeta paurvikam ॥ gurorbhrAtHMstathA putrAnbodhakAnprerakAnapi ॥ 47 ॥
After a year, the disciple should take refuge in another spiritual master. Even if one surrenders to another spiritual master, one should not despise his former spiritual master. The brothers of the spiritual master, sons, enlighteners and motivators.

There they approached a brāhmaṇa who was well versed in the Vedas. One should worship a spiritual master who is wise, auspicious and pleasing to the eye.

He shall continue to propitiate him till he is pleased. If the preceptor is pleased the sins of the disciple are immediately quelled.

Therefore, wealth, jewels, fields and houses are all acquired. They also provided them with ornaments, clothing, carriages, beds and seats.

With devotion one should offer these gifts to the spiritual master according to one’s means. If one desires the supreme destination, one should not cheat on finances.

Since he is his father, mother, master, kinsman, wealth, happiness, friend, comrade etc. he shall offer everything to him.

After offering these, he shall dedicate to him, himself, his family and all his possessions along with water and remain subservient to him for ever.

Since he has offered himself to Śiva as his devotee he shall ever remain so. He will have no rebirth thereafter.

The teacher shall test the brahmin disciple for a year, the kṣatriya for two years and the vaiśya for three years.

He shall test the disciples, with commands to give up life and wealth or by engaging the superior devotees in mean tasks and the inferior ones in noble tasks.

Even when rebuked or beaten if they do not feel distressed they shall be considered self-controlled and pure and hence deserving consecration in Śaiva rituals.

They are straightforward gentle clean and humble and steady in mind The brāhmaṇas were devotees of Lord Śiva and were characterized by cleanliness.

Thus she is equipped with the characteristics of speech, mind and body. It is concluded in the scriptures that one should be purified and understood according to law.

Women by themselves are not authorised in Śaivite consecration. If they are devoted to the lord they can be consecrated at the instance of their husbands.

tathaiva bhartRhInAyA putrAderabhyanujJayA ॥ adhikAro bhavatyeva kanyAyAH piturAjJayA ॥ zUdrANAM martyajAtInAM patitAnAM vizeSataH ॥ 63 ॥
Similarly, if a woman is deprived of her husband, she must have her sons and other relatives with her permission. The rights of the daughter are always granted by the order of her father. Especially among the śūdras, who have fallen into the race of mortals.

Similarly, the purification of the road is not prescribed for hybrids. If there is no artificial feeling, then Lord Śiva is the supreme cause.

pAdodakapradAnAdyaiH kuryuH pApavizodhanam ॥ atrAnulomajAtA ye yuktA eva dvijAtiSu ॥ 65 ॥
They should cleanse themselves of their sins by offering water for their feet. Those who are born in this world are considered to be born in the brāhmaṇas.

One should perform rituals appropriate to the mother’s family, such as cleansing the roads. The daughter of Lord Śiva was engaged by her father and others in the religious duties of Lord Śiva.

That is to be given to the devotee and not to anyone else who is opposed to it. If the wife is given to an unfavorable wife, she should inadvertently awaken her husband.

She obtained a husband who was not engaged by her spiritual masters in religious matters In the ultimate sense there is no fault in this world caused by lack of independence.

She was engaged in the religious duties of Lord Śiva because of her respect for Lord Śiva’s command. What is more, what is said here, whoever is the shelter of Lord Śiva?

If the person performing the ritualistic ceremonies is under the control of the spiritual master, the ritualistic ceremonies are not performed. From seeing, touching and talking to the spiritual master.

Whoever is born with wisdom has no defeat. The process of reformation performed by the mind is called yoga.

sa neha kathito guhyo guruvaktraikagocaraH ॥ kriyAvAnyastu saMskAraH kuMDamaMDapapUrvakaH ॥ sa vakSyate samAsena tasya zakyo na vistaraH ॥ 74 ॥
That mystery is not described here, but it is only visible from the mouth of the spiritual master. The other ritualistic ceremonies are performed before the kundamandapa. That will be described in brief but it is not possible to go into detail.
