upamanyuruvAca ॥ zaktissvAbhavikI tasya vidyA vizvavilakSaNA ॥ ekAnekasya rUpeNa bhAti bhAnoriva prabhA ॥ 1 ॥
Upamanyu said:— His Śakti shall be known as natural and dissimilar to the universe in its characteristics. It is single but appears in many forms like the light of the sun.

अनंताः शक्तयो यस्या इच्छाज्ञानक्रियादयः ॥ मायाद्याश्चाभवन्वह्नोर्विस्फुलिंगा यथा तथा ॥ २ ॥
anaMtAH zaktayo yasyA icchAjJAnakriyAdayaH ॥ mAyAdyAzcAbhavanvahnorvisphuliMgA yathA tathA ॥ 2 ॥
Endless are the Śaktis, viz, wish, knowledge, activity and Māyā etc. just like the flames of fire.

सदाशिवेश्वराद्या हि विद्या ऽविद्येश्वरादयः ॥ अभवन्पुरुषाश्चास्याः प्रकृतिश्च परात्परा ॥ ३ ॥
sadAzivezvarAdyA hi vidyA 'vidyezvarAdayaH ॥ abhavanpuruSAzcAsyAH prakRtizca parAtparA ॥ 3 ॥
The Puruṣas—Sadāśiva, Īśvara and others, Vidyeśvara Avidyeśvara and others and Prakṛti—greater than the greatest were born of this Śakti.

महदादिविशेषांतास्त्वजाद्याश्चापि मूर्तयः ॥ यच्चान्यदस्ति तत्सर्वं तस्याः कार्यं न संशयः ॥ ४ ॥
mahadAdivizeSAMtAstvajAdyAzcApi mUrtayaH ॥ yaccAnyadasti tatsarvaM tasyAH kAryaM na saMzayaH ॥ 4 ॥
There is no doubt that the principles from Mahat to Viśeṣa, the deities Brahmā and others and whatever there is as effect are produced by it.

सा शक्तिस्सर्वगा सूक्ष्मा प्रबोधानंदरूपिणी ॥ शक्तिमानुच्यते देवश्शिवश्शीतांशुभूषणः ॥ ५ ॥
sA zaktissarvagA sUkSmA prabodhAnaMdarUpiNI ॥ zaktimAnucyate devazzivazzItAMzubhUSaNaH ॥ 5 ॥
That Śakti is all-pervasive and subtle. It has the form of enlightenment and bliss. The moon-bedecked lord is, called Śaktimān.

वेद्यश्शिवश्शिवा विद्या प्रज्ञा चैव श्रुतिः स्मृतिः ॥ धृतिरेषा स्थितिर्निष्ठा ज्ञानेच्छाकर्मशक्तयः ॥ ६ ॥
vedyazzivazzivA vidyA prajJA caiva zrutiH smRtiH ॥ dhRtireSA sthitirniSThA jJAnecchAkarmazaktayaH ॥ 6 ॥
Śiva is the one who shall be known. Sivā is intellect, the Vedas, the firmness, stability, fixity and the Śakti of knowledge, wish and activity.

आज्ञा चैव परं ब्रह्म द्वे विद्ये च परापरे ॥ शुद्धविद्या शुद्धकला सर्वं शक्तिकृतं यतः ॥ ७ ॥
AjJA caiva paraM brahma dve vidye ca parApare ॥ zuddhavidyA zuddhakalA sarvaM zaktikRtaM yataH ॥ 7 ॥
Ājñā is the great Brahman. The two Vidyās are Parā and Aparā, Śuddhavidyā and Śuddhakalā since everything is created by Śakti.

माया च प्रकृतिर्जीवो विकारो विकृतिस्तथा ॥ असच्च सच्च यत्किंचित्तया सर्वमिदं ततम् ॥ ८ ॥
mAyA ca prakRtirjIvo vikAro vikRtistathA ॥ asacca sacca yatkiMcittayA sarvamidaM tatam ॥ 8 ॥
Māyā is Prakṛti. Jīva is Vikṛti. Whatever there is Sat or Asat is pervaded by Śakti.

सा देवी मायया सर्वं ब्रह्मांडं सचराचरम् ॥ मोहयत्यप्रयत्नेन मोचयत्यपि लीलया ॥ ९ ॥
sA devI mAyayA sarvaM brahmAMDaM sacarAcaram ॥ mohayatyaprayatnena mocayatyapi lIlayA ॥ 9 ॥
The goddess enchants and deludes the universe without any strain through Māyā. She releases the Jīvas sportively.

अनया सह सर्वेशः सप्तविंशप्रकारया ॥ विश्वं व्याप्य स्थितस्तस्मान्मुक्तिरत्र प्रवर्तते ॥ १० ॥
anayA saha sarvezaH saptaviMzaprakArayA ॥ vizvaM vyApya sthitastasmAnmuktiratra pravartate ॥ 10 ॥
With her ramified into twenty-seven forms, the lord stands pervading the universe. Hence the process of liberation functions.

मुमुक्षवः पुरा केचिन्मुनयो ब्रह्मवादिनः ॥ संशयाविष्टमनसो विस्मृशंति यथातथम् ॥ ११ ॥
mumukSavaH purA kecinmunayo brahmavAdinaH ॥ saMzayAviSTamanaso vismRzaMti yathAtatham ॥ 11 ॥
In the past some sages who spoke the Vedas desired liberation With their minds filled with doubt they forget the truth.

किं कारणं कुतो जाता जीवामः केन वा वयम् ॥ कुत्रास्माकं संप्रतिष्ठा केन वाधिष्ठिता वयम् ॥ १२ ॥
kiM kAraNaM kuto jAtA jIvAmaH kena vA vayam ॥ kutrAsmAkaM saMpratiSThA kena vAdhiSThitA vayam ॥ 12 ॥
What is the cause, where did we come from, and by what are we living? Where is our position and by whom are we established.

केन वर्तामहे शश्वत्सुखेष्वन्येषु चानिशम् ॥ अविलंघ्या च विश्वस्य व्यवस्था केन वा कृता ॥ १३ ॥
kena vartAmahe zazvatsukheSvanyeSu cAnizam ॥ avilaMghyA ca vizvasya vyavasthA kena vA kRtA ॥ 13 ॥
By what means can we live in eternal happiness and in other things? And who has made the insurmountable arrangement of the universe?

कालस्य भावो नियतिर्यदृच्छा नात्र युज्यते ॥ भूतानि योनिः पुरुषो योगी चैषां परो ऽथ वा ॥ १४ ॥
kAlasya bhAvo niyatiryadRcchA nAtra yujyate ॥ bhUtAni yoniH puruSo yogI caiSAM paro 'tha vA ॥ 14 ॥
The nature of time is fate, and chance does not apply here. The beings are the womb, the man, the yogi, or the other of them.

अचेतनत्वात्कालादेश्चेतनत्वेपि चात्मनः ॥ सुखदुःखानि भूतत्वादनीशत्वाद्विचार्यते ॥ १५ ॥
acetanatvAtkAlAdezcetanatvepi cAtmanaH ॥ sukhaduHkhAni bhUtatvAdanIzatvAdvicAryate ॥ 15 ॥
Because time and other things are unconscious, the self is also conscious. Happiness and pain are considered to be past and present.

तद्ध्यानयोगानुगतां प्रपश्यञ्छक्तिमैश्वरीम् ॥ पाशविच्छेदिकां साक्षान्निगूढां स्वगुणैर्भृशम् ॥ १६ ॥
taddhyAnayogAnugatAM prapazyaJchaktimaizvarIm ॥ pAzavicchedikAM sAkSAnnigUDhAM svaguNairbhRzam ॥ 16 ॥
He saw the divine energy followed by meditation and yoga. She was directly hidden by her own virtues and could break the ropes.

तया विच्छिन्नपाशास्ते सर्वकारणकारणम् ॥ शक्तिमंतं महादेवमपश्यन्दिव्यचक्षुषा ॥ १७ ॥
tayA vicchinnapAzAste sarvakAraNakAraNam ॥ zaktimaMtaM mahAdevamapazyandivyacakSuSA ॥ 17 ॥
The ropes of the Lord, the cause of all causes, were severed by her. With divine eyes he saw the mighty Mahadeva.

यः कारणान्यशेषाणि कालात्मसहितानि च ॥ अप्रमेयो ऽनया शक्त्या सकलं यो ऽधितिष्ठति ॥ १८ ॥
yaH kAraNAnyazeSANi kAlAtmasahitAni ca ॥ aprameyo 'nayA zaktyA sakalaM yo 'dhitiSThati ॥ 18 ॥
He is incomprehensible and through this Śakti he presides over all causes, including the Time-soul.

ततः प्रसादयोगेन योगेन परमेण च ॥ दृष्टेन भक्तियोगेन दिव्यः गतिमवाप्नुयुः ॥ १९ ॥
tataH prasAdayogena yogena parameNa ca ॥ dRSTena bhaktiyogena divyaH gatimavApnuyuH ॥ 19 ॥
Then through his grace, the great Yoga and the path of devotion they can attain the supreme divine goal.

तस्मात्सह तथा शक्त्या हृदि पश्यंति ये शिवम् ॥ तेषां शाश्वतिकी शांतिर्नैतरेषामिति श्रुतिः ॥ २० ॥
tasmAtsaha tathA zaktyA hRdi pazyaMti ye zivam ॥ teSAM zAzvatikI zAMtirnaitareSAmiti zrutiH ॥ 20 ॥
The Vedas declare that only those have permanent peace who see Śiva in their hearts along with that Śakti and none of the others.

न हि शक्तिमतश्शक्त्या विप्रयोगो ऽस्ति जातुचित् ॥ तस्माच्छक्तेः शक्तिमतस्तादात्म्यान्निर्वृतिर्द्वयोः ॥ २१ ॥
na hi zaktimatazzaktyA viprayogo 'sti jAtucit ॥ tasmAcchakteH zaktimatastAdAtmyAnnirvRtirdvayoH ॥ 21 ॥
Never is Śaktiman apart from the blissful Śakti due to the identity between Śakti and Śaktimān.

क्रमो विवक्षितो नूनं विमुक्तौ ज्ञानकर्मणोः ॥ प्रसादे सति सा मूर्तिर्यस्मात्करतले स्थिता ॥ २२ ॥
kramo vivakSito nUnaM vimuktau jJAnakarmaNoH ॥ prasAde sati sA mUrtiryasmAtkaratale sthitA ॥ 22 ॥
In regard to salvation the sequence of knowledge and activity is not intended because if there is divine grace salvation is accessible to everyone.

देवो वा दानवो वापि पशुर्वा विहगो ऽपि वा ॥ कीरो वाथ कृमिर्वापि मुच्यते तत्प्रसादतः ॥ २३ ॥
devo vA dAnavo vApi pazurvA vihago 'pi vA ॥ kIro vAtha kRmirvApi mucyate tatprasAdataH ॥ 23 ॥
Whether one is a god or an asura, an animal or a bird, a worm on a germ, one is liberated due to his grace.

गर्भस्थो जायमानो वा बालो वा तरुणो-पि वा ॥ वृद्धो वा म्रियमाणो वा स्वर्गस्थो वाथ नारकी ॥ २४ ॥
garbhastho jAyamAno vA bAlo vA taruNo-pi vA ॥ vRddho vA mriyamANo vA svargastho vAtha nArakI ॥ 24 ॥
Whether you are pregnant or born, whether you are a child or a young person. Whether he is old or dying or in heaven or in hell.

पतितो वापि धर्मात्मा पंडितो मूढ एव वा ॥ प्रसादे तत्क्षणादेव मुच्यते नात्र संशयः ॥ २५ ॥
patito vApi dharmAtmA paMDito mUDha eva vA ॥ prasAde tatkSaNAdeva mucyate nAtra saMzayaH ॥ 25 ॥
Whether he is a fallen man or a righteous man or a learned fool By grace he is immediately liberated there is no doubt about it.

अयोग्यानां च कारुण्याद्भक्तानां परमेश्वरः ॥ प्रसीदति न संदेहो विगृह्य विविधान्मलान् ॥ २६ ॥
ayogyAnAM ca kAruNyAdbhaktAnAM paramezvaraH ॥ prasIdati na saMdeho vigRhya vividhAnmalAn ॥ 26 ॥
The merciful lord quells different dirts of his devotees though they may be unqualified. He is pleased with their devotion.

प्रसदादेव सा भक्तिः प्रसादो भक्तिसंभवः ॥ अवस्थाभेदमुत्प्रेक्ष्य विद्वांस्तत्र न मुह्यति ॥ २७ ॥
prasadAdeva sA bhaktiH prasAdo bhaktisaMbhavaH ॥ avasthAbhedamutprekSya vidvAMstatra na muhyati ॥ 27 ॥
Their devotion is due to their grace and the grace is a result of devotion in view of the difference in states. A learned man is not deluded therein.

प्रसादपूर्विका येयं भुक्तिमुक्तिविधायिनी ॥ नैव सा शक्यते प्राप्तुं नरैरेकेन जन्मना ॥ २८ ॥
prasAdapUrvikA yeyaM bhuktimuktividhAyinI ॥ naiva sA zakyate prAptuM narairekena janmanA ॥ 28 ॥
This devotion with grace as its antecedent and causing worldly pleasures and salvation cannot be acquired in a single birth.

अनेकजन्मसिद्धानां श्रौतस्मार्तानुवर्तिनाम् ॥ विरक्तानां प्रबुद्धानां प्रसीदति महेश्वरः ॥ २९ ॥
anekajanmasiddhAnAM zrautasmArtAnuvartinAm ॥ viraktAnAM prabuddhAnAM prasIdati mahezvaraH ॥ 29 ॥
Maheśvara is delighted with enlightened people not attached to worldly pleasures who follow the rules prescribed in Śrutis and Smṛtis and who achieve Siddhis in the course of several births.

प्रसन्ने सति देवेश पशौ तस्मिन्प्रवर्तते ॥ अस्ति नाथो ममेत्यल्पा भक्तिर्बुद्धिपुरस्सरा ॥ ३० ॥
prasanne sati deveza pazau tasminpravartate ॥ asti nAtho mametyalpA bhaktirbuddhipurassarA ॥ 30 ॥
O Lord of the demigods, when the animal is pleased with the living entity, it is engaged in it. There is little devotion to the intellect that there is a master for me.

तपसा विविधैश्शैवैर्धर्मैस्संयुज्यते नरः ॥ तत्र योगे तदभ्यासस्ततो भक्तिः परा भवेत् ॥ ३१ ॥
tapasA vividhaizzaivairdharmaissaMyujyate naraH ॥ tatra yoge tadabhyAsastato bhaktiH parA bhavet ॥ 31 ॥
By performing various austerities a man is united with the Siva religious practices There is the practice of that in yoga and then the supreme devotion.

परया च तया भक्त्या प्रसादो लभ्यते परः ॥ प्रसादात्सर्वपाशेभ्यो मुक्तिर्मुक्तस्य निर्वृतिः ॥ ३२ ॥
parayA ca tayA bhaktyA prasAdo labhyate paraH ॥ prasAdAtsarvapAzebhyo muktirmuktasya nirvRtiH ॥ 32 ॥
As a result of that a greater grace is acquired. As a result of the grace liberation is attained. A liberated soul enjoys bliss.

अल्पभावो ऽपि यो मर्त्यस्सो ऽपि जन्मत्रयात्परम् ॥ नयोनियंत्रपीडायै भवेन्नैवात्र संशयः ॥ ३३ ॥
alpabhAvo 'pi yo martyasso 'pi janmatrayAtparam ॥ nayoniyaMtrapIDAyai bhavennaivAtra saMzayaH ॥ 33 ॥
There is no doubt that even a man of limited piety is spared the excruciating pain of being crushed in the machine of the vaginal passage after three births.

सांगा ऽनंगा च या सेवा सा भक्तिरिति कथ्यते ॥ सा पुनर्भिद्यते त्रेधा मनोवाक्कायसाधनैः ॥ ३४ ॥
sAMgA 'naMgA ca yA sevA sA bhaktiriti kathyate ॥ sA punarbhidyate tredhA manovAkkAyasAdhanaiH ॥ 34 ॥
Service with or without the ancillaries is called devotion. It is threefold due to the three means of mind speech and body.

शिवरूपादिचिंता या सा सेवा मानसी स्मृता ॥ जपादिर्वाचिकी सेवा कर्मपूजादि कायिकी ॥ ३५ ॥
zivarUpAdiciMtA yA sA sevA mAnasI smRtA ॥ japAdirvAcikI sevA karmapUjAdi kAyikI ॥ 35 ॥
The meditation on Śiva’s form is mental service. Repetition of mantras is verbal service. The rites of worship constitute the physical service.

सेयं त्रिसाधना सेवा शिवधर्मश्च कथ्यते ॥ स तु पञ्चविधः प्रोक्तः शिवेन परमात्मना ॥ ३६ ॥
seyaM trisAdhanA sevA zivadharmazca kathyate ॥ sa tu paJcavidhaH proktaH zivena paramAtmanA ॥ 36 ॥
This threefold service is called the holy rite of Śiva. It is of five kinds as explained by Śiva the great Ātman.

तपः कर्म जपो ध्यानं ज्ञानं चेति समासतः ॥ कर्मलिङ्गार्चनाद्यं च तपश्चान्द्रायणादिकम् ॥ ३७ ॥
tapaH karma japo dhyAnaM jJAnaM ceti samAsataH ॥ karmaliGgArcanAdyaM ca tapazcAndrAyaNAdikam ॥ 37 ॥
In summary, these are austerities, rituals, chanting, meditation and knowledge. Karmalinga worship and other austerities and lunar eclipses.

जपस्त्रिधा शिवाभ्यासश्चिन्ता ध्यानं शिवस्य तु ॥ शिवागमोक्तं यज्ज्ञानं तदत्र ज्ञानमुच्यते ॥ ३८ ॥
japastridhA zivAbhyAsazcintA dhyAnaM zivasya tu ॥ zivAgamoktaM yajjJAnaM tadatra jJAnamucyate ॥ 38 ॥
There are three kinds of chanting, practicing Lord Śiva, worrying about Lord Śiva and meditating on Him. The knowledge which is stated in the Shiva-agama is called knowledge here.

श्रीकंठेन शिवेनोक्तं शिवायै च शिवागमः ॥ शिवाश्रितानां कारुण्याच्छ्रेयसामेकसाधनम् ॥ ३९ ॥
zrIkaMThena zivenoktaM zivAyai ca zivAgamaH ॥ zivAzritAnAM kAruNyAcchreyasAmekasAdhanam ॥ 39 ॥
The Śaivite Āgama was narrated to Śivā by Śiva out of mercy for those who have resorted to him. That is the sole means of ultimate welfare.

तस्माद्विवर्धयेद्भक्तिं शिवे परमकारणे ॥ त्यजेच्च विषयासंगं श्रेयो ऽर्थी मतिमान्नरः ॥ ४० ॥
tasmAdvivardhayedbhaktiM zive paramakAraNe ॥ tyajecca viSayAsaMgaM zreyo 'rthI matimAnnaraH ॥ 40 ॥
An intelligent man seeking welfare shall avoid too much adherence to sensual objects and increase devotion towards Śiva, the great cause.
