kRSNa uvAca ॥ bhagavanparamezasya zarvasyAmitatejasaH ॥ mUrtibhirvizvamevedaM yathA vyAptaM tathA zrutam ॥ 1 ॥
Kṛṣṇa said— O holy lord, it has been heard how this universe is pervaded by the Mūrtis of lord Śiva, of unmeasured brilliance.

athaitajjJAtumicchAmi yAthAtmyaM pamezayoH ॥ strIpuMbhAvAtmakaM cedaM tAbhyAM kathamadhiSThitam ॥ 2 ॥
Now I wish to know the innate nature of the great lord and the goddess. How is this universe having male and female traits presided over by them?

upamanyuruvAca ॥ zrImadvibhUtiM zivayoryAthAtmyaM ca samAsataH ॥ vakSye tadvistarAdvaktuM bhavenApi na zakyate ॥ 3 ॥
Upamanyu said’.— I shall explain succinctly the glorious magnificence and the innate nature of Śiva and Śivā. It cannot be adequately explained in detail even by Śiva.

शक्तिः साक्षान्महादेवी महादेवश्च शक्तिमान् ॥ तयोर्विभूतिलेशो वै सर्वमेतच्चराचरम् ॥ ४ ॥
zaktiH sAkSAnmahAdevI mahAdevazca zaktimAn ॥ tayorvibhUtilezo vai sarvametaccarAcaram ॥ 4 ॥
Śakti is Mahādevī herself and Mahādeva is one possessing Śakti. The entire universe of mobile and immobile beings is a fragment of their exalted magnificence.

वस्तु किंचिदचिद्रूपं किंचिद्वस्तु चिदात्मकम् ॥ द्वयं शुद्धमशुद्धं च परं चापरमेव च ॥ ५ ॥
vastu kiMcidacidrUpaM kiMcidvastu cidAtmakam ॥ dvayaM zuddhamazuddhaM ca paraM cAparameva ca ॥ 5 ॥
Some objects are in the form of Cit and some in the form of Acit. Each of them is again twofold Śuddha and Para; Aśuddha and Apara.

यत्संसरति चिच्चक्रमचिच्चक्रसमन्वितम् ॥ तदेवाशुद्धमपरमितरं तु परं शुभम् ॥ ६ ॥
yatsaMsarati ciccakramaciccakrasamanvitam ॥ tadevAzuddhamaparamitaraM tu paraM zubham ॥ 6 ॥
The wheel of Cit that undergoes worldly existence along with the wheel of Acit is Aśuddha and Apara. The other one is Śuddha and Para.

aparaM ca paraM caiva dvayaM cidacidAtmakam ॥ zivasya ca zivAyAzca svAmyaM caitatsvabhAvataH ॥ 7 ॥
Both the Cit and Acit whether Para or Apara and the lordship of Śiva and Śivā are natural.

शिवयोर्वै वशे विश्वं न विश्वस्य वशे शिवौ ॥ ईशितव्यमिदं यस्मात्तस्माद्विश्वेश्वरौ शिवौ ॥ ८ ॥
zivayorvai vaze vizvaM na vizvasya vaze zivau ॥ IzitavyamidaM yasmAttasmAdvizvezvarau zivau ॥ 8 ॥
The universe is subject to the control of Śiva and Śivā, but Śiva and Śivā are not subject to the control of the universe. Since the universe is to be ruled over, Śiva and Śivā are the sovereigns of the universe.

यथा शिवस्तथा देवी यथा देवी तथा शिवः ॥ नानयोरंतरं विद्याच्चंद्रचन्द्रिकयोरिव ॥ ९ ॥
yathA zivastathA devI yathA devI tathA zivaH ॥ nAnayoraMtaraM vidyAccaMdracandrikayoriva ॥ 9 ॥
Just as Śiva so also the goddess. Just as the goddess so also Śiva. No difference shall be thought of between the two as between the moon and the moonlight.

चंद्रो न खलु भात्येष यथा चंद्रिकया विना ॥ न भाति विद्यमानो ऽपि तथा शक्त्या विना शिवः ॥ १० ॥
caMdro na khalu bhAtyeSa yathA caMdrikayA vinA ॥ na bhAti vidyamAno 'pi tathA zaktyA vinA zivaH ॥ 10 ॥
Just as the moon does not shine without the moonlight so also though existing Śiva does not shine without Śakti.

प्रभया हि विनायद्वद्भानुरेष न विद्यते ॥ प्रभा च भानुना तेन सुतरां तदुपाश्रया ॥ ११ ॥
prabhayA hi vinAyadvadbhAnureSa na vidyate ॥ prabhA ca bhAnunA tena sutarAM tadupAzrayA ॥ 11 ॥
There is nothing like the sun without its effulgence. The sun-god, Prabhā, is very much dependent on the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

एवं परस्परापेक्षा शक्तिशक्तिमतोः स्थिता ॥ न शिवेन विना शक्तिर्न शक्त्या च विना शिवः ॥ १२ ॥
evaM parasparApekSA zaktizaktimatoH sthitA ॥ na zivena vinA zaktirna zaktyA ca vinA zivaH ॥ 12 ॥
Thus the mutual dependence of the two powers is established. There is no power without Lord Śiva, and no power without Lord Śiva.

zaktauyayA zivo nityaM bhaktau muktau ca dehinAm ॥ AdyA saikA parA zaktizcinmayI zivasaMzrayA ॥ 13 ॥
Lord Śiva is always the source of all devotional service and liberation for the embodied souls. The original and supreme energy is the consciousness of Lord Śiva.

यामाहुरखिलेशस्य तैस्तैरनुगुणैर्गुणैः ॥ समानधर्मिणीमेव शिवस्य परमात्मनः ॥ १४ ॥
yAmAhurakhilezasya taistairanuguNairguNaiH ॥ samAnadharmiNImeva zivasya paramAtmanaH ॥ 14 ॥
They describe her as the Supreme Lord of all, according to His various qualities. She was equally religious to Lord Śiva, the Supreme Soul.

सैका परा च चिद्रूपा शक्तिः प्रसवधर्मिणी ॥ विभज्य बहुधा विश्वं विदधाति शिवेच्छया ॥ १५ ॥
saikA parA ca cidrUpA zaktiH prasavadharmiNI ॥ vibhajya bahudhA vizvaM vidadhAti zivecchayA ॥ 15 ॥
The solitary and great Śakti of the form of Cit, is of parturient trait. It creates the universe with its manifold ramifications at the will of Śiva.

सा मूलप्रकृतिर्माया त्रिगुणा च त्रिधा स्मृता ॥ शिवया च विपर्यस्तं यया ततमिदं जगत् ॥ १६ ॥
sA mUlaprakRtirmAyA triguNA ca tridhA smRtA ॥ zivayA ca viparyastaM yayA tatamidaM jagat ॥ 16 ॥
It is also called Mūlaprakṛti, Māyā and Triguṇā. It is threefold. The universe is hurled back by her and pervaded.

एकधा च द्विधा चैव तथा शतसहस्रधा ॥ शक्तयः खलु भिद्यंते बहुधा व्यवहारतः ॥ १७ ॥
ekadhA ca dvidhA caiva tathA zatasahasradhA ॥ zaktayaH khalu bhidyaMte bahudhA vyavahArataH ॥ 17 ॥
As one unit, as twofold, in hundreds and thousands Śaktis ramify themselves in their function.

शिवेच्छया पराशक्तिः शिवतत्त्वैकतां गता ॥ ततः परिस्फुरत्यादौ सर्गे तैलं तिलादिव ॥ १८ ॥
zivecchayA parAzaktiH zivatattvaikatAM gatA ॥ tataH parisphuratyAdau sarge tailaM tilAdiva ॥ 18 ॥
At the will of Śiva, the great Śakti united with Śivatattva manifests from it at the first creation, like the oil from the gingelly seed.

ततः क्रियाख्यया शक्त्या शक्तौ शक्तिमदुत्थया ॥ तस्यां विक्षोभ्यमाणायामादौ नादः समुद्बभौ ॥ १९ ॥
tataH kriyAkhyayA zaktyA zaktau zaktimadutthayA ॥ tasyAM vikSobhyamANAyAmAdau nAdaH samudbabhau ॥ 19 ॥
Then the śakti being agitated by the Kriyā Śakti originating from the Śaktimān, the primordial sound originates at the outset of creation.

नादाद्विनिःसृतो बिंदुर्बिंदोदेवस्सदाशिवः ॥ तस्मान्महेश्वरो जातः शुद्धविद्या महेश्वरात् ॥ २० ॥
nAdAdviniHsRto biMdurbiMdodevassadAzivaH ॥ tasmAnmahezvaro jAtaH zuddhavidyA mahezvarAt ॥ 20 ॥
The Bindu comes out of the Nāda; from Bindu comes out Sadāśiva. From him is born Maheśvara and Suddhavidyā originates from Maheśvara.

सा वाचामीश्वरी शक्तिर्वागीशाख्या हि शूलिनः ॥ या सा वर्णस्वरूपेण मातृकेपि विजृम्भते ॥ २१ ॥
sA vAcAmIzvarI zaktirvAgIzAkhyA hi zUlinaH ॥ yA sA varNasvarUpeNa mAtRkepi vijRmbhate ॥ 21 ॥
That is the deity of speech, the Śakti of Śiva named Vāgīśā; the same in the form of letters becomes manifest as Mātṛkā.

अथानंतसमावेशान्माया कालमवासृजत् ॥ नियतिञ्च कलां विद्यां कलातोरागपूरुषौ ॥ २२ ॥
athAnaMtasamAvezAnmAyA kAlamavAsRjat ॥ niyatiJca kalAM vidyAM kalAtorAgapUruSau ॥ 22 ॥
Then by the infusion of the infinite, Māyā creates Kāla, Niyati, Kalā and Vidyā and through Kalā, Rāga and Puruṣa.

मायातः पुनरेवाभूदव्यक्तं त्रिगुणात्मकम् ॥ त्रिगुणाच्च ततो व्यक्ताद्विभक्ताः स्युस्त्रयो गुणाः ॥ २३ ॥
mAyAtaH punarevAbhUdavyaktaM triguNAtmakam ॥ triguNAcca tato vyaktAdvibhaktAH syustrayo guNAH ॥ 23 ॥
From Māyā again originates the manifest consisting of the three Guṇas. From this Avyakta the three Guṇas become separated.

सत्त्वं रजस्तमश्चेति यैर्व्याप्तमखिलं जगत् ॥ गुणेभ्यः क्षोभ्यमाणेभ्यो गुणेशाख्यास्त्रिमूर्तयः ॥ २४ ॥
sattvaM rajastamazceti yairvyAptamakhilaM jagat ॥ guNebhyaH kSobhyamANebhyo guNezAkhyAstrimUrtayaH ॥ 24 ॥
The modes of goodness, passion and ignorance pervade the entire universe. When the modes of nature are agitated, the three forms of the modes of material nature, known as the Lord of the modes of nature, are manifested.

अभवन्महदादीनि तत्त्वानि च यथाक्रमम् ॥ तेभ्यस्स्युरण्डपिण्डानि त्वसंख्यानि शिवाज्ञया ॥ अधिष्ठितान्यनन्ताद्यैर्विद्येशैश्चक्रवर्तिभिः ॥ २५ ॥
abhavanmahadAdIni tattvAni ca yathAkramam ॥ tebhyassyuraNDapiNDAni tvasaMkhyAni zivAjJayA ॥ adhiSThitAnyanantAdyairvidyezaizcakravartibhiH ॥ 25 ॥
The elements, beginning with the great, were gradually created. By the order of Lord Śiva, innumerable eggs will be produced from these bodies. They are occupied by the emperors of the universe, headed by Ananta and others.

शरीरांतरभेदेन शक्तेर्भेदाः प्रकीर्तिताः ॥ नानारूपास्तु विज्ञेयाः स्थूलसूक्ष्मविभेदतः ॥ २६ ॥
zarIrAMtarabhedena zakterbhedAH prakIrtitAH ॥ nAnArUpAstu vijJeyAH sthUlasUkSmavibhedataH ॥ 26 ॥
In accordance with the difference in bodies, Śaktis are said to be different. They shall be known as having diverse forms both gross and subtle.

रुद्रस्य रौद्री सा शक्तिर्विष्णौर्वै वैष्णवी मता ॥ ब्रह्माणी ब्रह्मणः प्रोक्ता चेन्द्रस्यैंद्रीति कथ्यते ॥ २७ ॥
rudrasya raudrI sA zaktirviSNaurvai vaiSNavI matA ॥ brahmANI brahmaNaH proktA cendrasyaiMdrIti kathyate ॥ 27 ॥
The Śakti of Rudra is called Raudrī, that of Viṣṇu Vaiṣṇavī; that of Brahmā Brahmāṇī and that of Indra Aindrī.

किमत्र बहुनोक्तेन यद्विश्वमिति कीर्तितम् ॥ शक्यात्मनैव तद्व्याप्तं यथा देहे ऽंतरात्मना ॥ २८ ॥
kimatra bahunoktena yadvizvamiti kIrtitam ॥ zakyAtmanaiva tadvyAptaM yathA dehe 'MtarAtmanA ॥ 28 ॥
Of what avail is much talk? What is glorified as universe is pervaded by Śakti just as the physical body is pervaded by the immanent soul.

तस्माच्छक्तिमयं सर्वं जगत्स्थावरजंगमम् ॥ कला या परमा शक्तिः कथिता परमात्मनः ॥ २९ ॥
tasmAcchaktimayaM sarvaM jagatsthAvarajaMgamam ॥ kalA yA paramA zaktiH kathitA paramAtmanaH ॥ 29 ॥
Therefore everything in the universe, moving and nonmoving, is composed of energy. The art which is the supreme power of the Supreme Soul has been described.

evameSA parA zaktirIzvarecchAnuyAyinI ॥ sthiraM caraM ca yadvizvaM sRjatIti vinizcayaH ॥ 30 ॥
Thus this supreme energy follows the will of the Lord. It is certain that He creates the universe, both moving and stationary.

ज्ञानक्रिया चिकीर्षाभिस्तिसृभिस्स्वात्मशक्तिभिः ॥ शक्तिमानीश्वरः शश्वद्विश्वं व्याप्याधितिष्ठति ॥ ३१ ॥
jJAnakriyA cikIrSAbhistisRbhissvAtmazaktibhiH ॥ zaktimAnIzvaraH zazvadvizvaM vyApyAdhitiSThati ॥ 31 ॥
Lord Śiva is Śaktimān possessing the three Śaktis of knowledge, activity and wish. He pervades the universe for ever and stays.

इदमित्थमिदं नेत्थं भवेदित्येवमात्मिका ॥ इच्छाशक्तिर्महेशस्य नित्या कार्यनियामिका ॥ ३२ ॥
idamitthamidaM netthaM bhavedityevamAtmikA ॥ icchAzaktirmahezasya nityA kAryaniyAmikA ॥ 32 ॥
“This shall be this way.” “This shall not be this way.” It is in this form that the wish of the lord permanently restrains activities.

ज्ञानशक्तिस्तु तत्कार्यं करणं कारणं तथा ॥ प्रयोजनं च तत्त्वेन बुद्धिरूपाध्यवस्यति ॥ ३३ ॥
jJAnazaktistu tatkAryaM karaNaM kAraNaM tathA ॥ prayojanaM ca tattvena buddhirUpAdhyavasyati ॥ 33 ॥
Śakti of knowledge is in the form of Buddhi and it determines its effect, instrument, cause and purpose factually.

यथेप्सितं क्रियाशक्तिर्यथाध्यवसितं जगत् ॥ कल्पयत्यखिलं कार्यं क्षणात्संकल्परूपिणी ॥ ३४ ॥
yathepsitaM kriyAzaktiryathAdhyavasitaM jagat ॥ kalpayatyakhilaM kAryaM kSaNAtsaMkalparUpiNI ॥ 34 ॥
Śakti of activity in the form of conception formulates and evolves the effect—universe, in the manner wished for and in the manner determined.

यथा शक्तित्रयोत्थानं शक्तिप्रसवधर्मिणी ॥ शक्त्या परमया नुन्ना प्रसूते सकलं जगत् ॥ ३५ ॥
yathA zaktitrayotthAnaM zaktiprasavadharmiNI ॥ zaktyA paramayA nunnA prasUte sakalaM jagat ॥ 35 ॥
When the threefold Śaktis are risen, the Śakti of parturient traits urged by the Paramā Śakti gives birth to the universe.

एवं शक्तिसमायोगाच्छक्तिमानुच्यते शिवः ॥ शक्तिशक्तिमदुत्थं तु शाक्तं शैवमिदं जगत् ॥ ३६ ॥
evaM zaktisamAyogAcchaktimAnucyate zivaH ॥ zaktizaktimadutthaM tu zAktaM zaivamidaM jagat ॥ 36 ॥
Śiva is called Śaktimān since he is in association with it. This universe born of both Śakti and Śaktimān is termed Śākta and Śaiva.

यथा न जायते पुत्रः पितरं मातरं विना ॥ तथा भवं भवानीं च विना नैतच्चराचरम् ॥ स्त्रीपुंसप्रभवं विश्वं स्त्रीपुंसात्मकमेव च ॥ ३७ ॥
yathA na jAyate putraH pitaraM mAtaraM vinA ॥ tathA bhavaM bhavAnIM ca vinA naitaccarAcaram ॥ strIpuMsaprabhavaM vizvaM strIpuMsAtmakameva ca ॥ 37 ॥
Just as no boy is born without parents, so also the universe of mobile and immobile beings does not originate without Śiva and Śivā. The universe has both a male and a female source, hence it is in the nature of male and female.

स्त्रीपुंसयोर्विभूतिश्च स्त्रीपुंसाभ्यामधिष्ठितम् ॥ परमात्मा शिवः प्रोक्तश्शिवा सा च प्रकीर्तिता ॥ ३८ ॥
strIpuMsayorvibhUtizca strIpuMsAbhyAmadhiSThitam ॥ paramAtmA zivaH proktazzivA sA ca prakIrtitA ॥ 38 ॥
It is the effect of the superhuman power of male and female. It is presided over by a male and a female. Śiva is the great Ātman and Śivā the great Śakti.

शिवस्सदाशिवः प्रोक्तः शिवा सा च मनोन्मनी ॥ शिवो महेश्वरो ज्ञेयः शिवा मायेति कथ्यते ॥ ३९ ॥

A person who has understood the superhuman excellence of Śiva and Śivā which is the divine medicine to resuscitate the dead on being bitten by the serpent of worldly existence, is not afraid of anything.

The individual soul who understands factually the Parā and the Aparā excellences goes beyond the Aparā Bhūti and enjoys the Parā Bhūti (the greatest excellence).

O Kṛṣṇa, thus I have explained to you the innate nature of the great souls, Śiva and Śivā, though it is a secret because you are a qualified devotee of Śiva.

nAziSyebhyo 'pyazaivebhyo nAbhaktebhyaH kadAcana ॥ vyAharedIzayorbhUtimiti vedAnuzAsanam ॥ 82 ॥
It is the injunction of the Vedas that the Vibhūti of the lord and the goddess shall not be imparted to those who are not disciples or who are not devotees or who are not the followers of Śiva.

tasmAttvamatikalyANaparebhyaH kathayenna hi ॥ tvAdRzebhyo 'nurUpebhyaH kathayaitanna cAnyathA ॥ 83 ॥
O Kṛṣṇa of great welfare, so you do not tell others about this. Mention it to people, like you, who are deserving.

vibhUtimetAM zivayoryogyebhyo yaH pradApayet ॥ saMsArasAgarAnmuktaH zivasAyujyamApnuyAt ॥ 84 ॥
He who imparts this Vibhūti of Śiva and Śivā to qualified and competent men is liberated from the ocean of worldly existence and attains Sāyujya of Śiva.

कीर्तनादस्य नश्यंति महान्त्यः पापकोटयः ॥ त्रिश्चतुर्धासमभ्यस्तैर्विनश्यंति ततो ऽधिकाः ॥ ८५ ॥
kIrtanAdasya nazyaMti mahAntyaH pApakoTayaH ॥ trizcaturdhAsamabhyastairvinazyaMti tato 'dhikAH ॥ 85 ॥
By reciting this, crores of sins perish. Repeated thrice or four times it quells even more.

nazyaMtyaniSTaripavo vardhante suhRdastathA ॥ vidyA ca vardhate zaivI matissatye pravartate ॥ 86 ॥
All displeasing enemies perish. Friends increase. Learning flourishes. Auspicious intellect functions in Truth.

bhaktiH parAH zive sAmbe sAnuge saparicchide ॥ yadyadiSTatamaM cAnyattattadApnotyasaMzayam ॥ 87 ॥
He acquires devotion to Śiva, Śivā, their followers and attendants. He acquires whatever is pleasing and all other things undoubtedly.

अन्तःशुचिः शिवे भक्तो विस्रब्धः कीर्तयेद्यदि ॥ प्रबलैः कर्मभिः पूर्वैः फलं चेत्प्रतिबध्यते ॥ पुनः पुनः समभ्यस्येत्तस्य नास्तीह दुर्ल्लभम् ॥ ८८ ॥
antaHzuciH zive bhakto visrabdhaH kIrtayedyadi ॥ prabalaiH karmabhiH pUrvaiH phalaM cetpratibadhyate ॥ punaH punaH samabhyasyettasya nAstIha durllabham ॥ 88 ॥
One should recite this with purity of mind, devotion to Śiva and full conviction. If due to powerful previous Karmans the fruition is prevented, he shall repeat it again. There is nothing inaccessible to him.
