namassamastasaMsAracakrabhramaNahetave ॥ gaurIkucataTadvandvakuMkumAMkitavakSase ॥ 1 ॥
Obeisance to the lord whose chest is marked by the saffron from the plump pair of breasts of Gaurī and who causes the entire world whirl like a wheel.

सूत उवाच ॥ उक्त्वा भगवतो लब्धप्रसादादुपमन्युना ॥ नियमादुत्थितो वायुर्मध्ये प्राप्ते दिवाकरे ॥ २ ॥
sUta uvAca ॥ uktvA bhagavato labdhaprasAdAdupamanyunA ॥ niyamAdutthito vAyurmadhye prApte divAkare ॥ 2 ॥
Sūta said:— Having obtained the mercy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Upamaṇyu spoke as follows. When the sun rose in the middle of the day the wind rose as usual.

ऋषयश्चापि ते सर्वे नैमिषारण्यवासिनः ॥ अथायमर्थः प्रष्टव्य इति कृत्वा विनिश्चयम् ॥ ३ ॥
RSayazcApi te sarve naimiSAraNyavAsinaH ॥ athAyamarthaH praSTavya iti kRtvA vinizcayam ॥ 3 ॥
All the sages also lived in the forest of Naimiṣāraṇya Having decided that the meaning of Athaya should be asked.

कृत्वा यथा स्वकं कृत्यं प्रत्यहं ते यथा पुरा ॥ भगवंतमुपायांतं समीक्ष्य समुपाविशन् ॥ ४ ॥
kRtvA yathA svakaM kRtyaM pratyahaM te yathA purA ॥ bhagavaMtamupAyAMtaM samIkSya samupAvizan ॥ 4 ॥
Every day you have done your duty as you used to. Seeing the Lord approaching they sat down.

अथासौ नियमस्यांते भगवानम्बरोद्भवः ॥ मध्ये मुनिसभायास्तु भेजे कॢप्तं वरासनम् ॥ ५ ॥
athAsau niyamasyAMte bhagavAnambarodbhavaH ॥ madhye munisabhAyAstu bheje klRptaM varAsanam ॥ 5 ॥
At the end of the observance of the daily routine lord Vāyu occupied his assigned seat in the middle of the assembly of the sages.

सुखासनोपविष्टश्च वायुर्लोकनमस्कृतः ॥ श्रीमद्विभूतिमीशस्य हृदि कृत्वेदमब्रवीत् ॥ ६ ॥
sukhAsanopaviSTazca vAyurlokanamaskRtaH ॥ zrImadvibhUtimIzasya hRdi kRtvedamabravIt ॥ 6 ॥
Vāyu, saluted by all the worlds, comfortably seated himself in the seat. Keeping well in his mind the glorious prosperity of the lord, he spoke thus.

तं प्रपद्ये महादेवं सर्वज्ञमपराजितम् ॥ विभूतिस्सकलं यस्य चराचरमिदं जगत् ॥ ७ ॥
taM prapadye mahAdevaM sarvajJamaparAjitam ॥ vibhUtissakalaM yasya carAcaramidaM jagat ॥ 7 ॥
“I resort to that great lord, the unvanquished and the omniscient whose prosperity and glory constitute the universe consisting of the mobile and immobile beings.

इत्याकर्ण्य शुभां वाणीमृषयः क्षीणकल्मषाः ॥ विभूतिविस्तरं श्रोतुमूचुस्ते परमं वचः ॥ ८ ॥
ityAkarNya zubhAM vANImRSayaH kSINakalmaSAH ॥ vibhUtivistaraM zrotumUcuste paramaM vacaH ॥ 8 ॥
On hearing the auspicious statement the sages of quelled sins spoke these words in order to hear further the details of the lord’s glory.

ऋषय ऊचुः ॥ उक्तं भगवता वृत्तमुपमन्योर्महात्मनः ॥ क्षीरार्थेनापि तपसा यत्प्राप्तं परमेश्वरात् ॥ ९ ॥
RSaya UcuH ॥ uktaM bhagavatA vRttamupamanyormahAtmanaH ॥ kSIrArthenApi tapasA yatprAptaM paramezvarAt ॥ 9 ॥
The sages said:— The Supreme Personality of Godhead has now described the history of the great sage Upamaṇi. Whatever is obtained from the Supreme Lord by austerities even for the sake of milk.

दृष्टो ऽसौ वासुदेवेन कृष्णेनाक्लिष्टकर्मणा ॥ धौम्याग्रजस्ततस्तेन कृत्वा पाशुपतं व्रतम् ॥ १० ॥
dRSTo 'sau vAsudevena kRSNenAkliSTakarmaNA ॥ dhaumyAgrajastatastena kRtvA pAzupataM vratam ॥ 10 ॥
Lord Vāsudeva, Lord Kṛṣṇa, whose activities are effortless, saw this demon. Then the elder brother of Dhaumya observed the vow of Pashupata.

प्राप्तं च परमं ज्ञानमिति प्रागेव शुश्रुम ॥ कथं स लब्धवान् कृष्णो ज्ञानं पाशुपतं परम् ॥ ११ ॥
prAptaM ca paramaM jJAnamiti prAgeva zuzruma ॥ kathaM sa labdhavAn kRSNo jJAnaM pAzupataM param ॥ 11 ॥
We have already heard that you have attained the supreme knowledge. How did Krishna attain the supreme knowledge of Pashupata.

वायुरुवाच ॥ स्वेच्छया ह्यवतीर्णोपि वासुदेवस्सनातनः ॥ निंदयन्निव मानुष्यं देहशुद्धिं चकार सः ॥ १२ ॥
vAyuruvAca ॥ svecchayA hyavatIrNopi vAsudevassanAtanaH ॥ niMdayanniva mAnuSyaM dehazuddhiM cakAra saH ॥ 12 ॥
Vāyu said:— Vāsudeva, the eternal god, had taken his incarnation out of his own free will. Still he performed the purificatory rites for his body thereby indicating that the human body is worthy of censure.

पुत्रार्थं हि तपस्तप्तुं गतस्तस्य महामुनेः ॥ आश्रमं मुनिभिर्दृष्टं दृष्टवांस्तत्र वै मुनिम् ॥ १३ ॥
putrArthaM hi tapastaptuM gatastasya mahAmuneH ॥ AzramaM munibhirdRSTaM dRSTavAMstatra vai munim ॥ 13 ॥
He went to the great sage’s hermitage resorted to by other sages, in order to perform a penance for the sake of sons. There he saw the sage Upamanyu.

भस्मावदातसर्वांगं त्रिपुंड्रांकितमस्तकम् ॥ रुद्राक्षमालाभरणं जटामंडलमंडितम् ॥ १४ ॥
bhasmAvadAtasarvAMgaM tripuMDrAMkitamastakam ॥ rudrAkSamAlAbharaNaM jaTAmaMDalamaMDitam ॥ 14 ॥
His whole body was burnt to ashes and his head was decorated with three lotuses. He was adorned with a garland of Rudraksha and adorned with matted hair.

तच्छिष्यभूतैर्मुनिभिश्शास्त्रैर्वेदमिवावृतम् ॥ शिवध्यानरतं शांतमुपमन्युं महाद्युतिम् ॥ १५ ॥
tacchiSyabhUtairmunibhizzAstrairvedamivAvRtam ॥ zivadhyAnarataM zAMtamupamanyuM mahAdyutim ॥ 15 ॥
The sages who became his disciples enveloped him in the scriptures just as the Vedas enveloped him He was calm and effulgent and engaged in the meditation of Lord Siva.

नमश्चकार तं दृष्ट्वा हृष्टसर्वतनूरुहः ॥ बहुमानेन कृष्णो ऽसौ त्रिः कृत्वा तु प्रदक्षिणाम् ॥ स्तुतिं चकार सुप्रीत्या नतस्कंधः कृताञ्जलिः ॥ १६ ॥
namazcakAra taM dRSTvA hRSTasarvatanUruhaH ॥ bahumAnena kRSNo 'sau triH kRtvA tu pradakSiNAm ॥ stutiM cakAra suprItyA nataskaMdhaH kRtAJjaliH ॥ 16 ॥
On seeing him hairs stood on their ends in the body of Kṛṣṇa due to delight. Respectfully he circumambulated him thrice and knelt before him. With shoulders drooping and palms joined in reverence he delightfully eulogised him.

तस्यावलोकनादेव मुनेः कृष्णस्य धीमतः ॥ नष्टमासीन्मलं सर्वं मायाजं कार्ममेव च ॥ १७ ॥
tasyAvalokanAdeva muneH kRSNasya dhImataH ॥ naSTamAsInmalaM sarvaM mAyAjaM kArmameva ca ॥ 17 ॥
At the mere vision of the sage, all dirt born of Māyā and Karman of Kṛṣṇa was quelled.

तपःक्षीणमलं कृष्णमुपमन्युर्यथाविधिः ॥ भस्मनोद्धूल्य तं मन्त्रैरग्निरित्यादिभिः क्रमात् ॥ १८ ॥
tapaHkSINamalaM kRSNamupamanyuryathAvidhiH ॥ bhasmanoddhUlya taM mantrairagnirityAdibhiH kramAt ॥ 18 ॥
The stain of his austerities had been exhausted, and he became angry with Lord Kṛṣṇa in accordance with the prescribed rituals. Lifting him from the ashes he chanted mantras like Agni in this order.

अथ पाशुपतं साक्षाद्व्रतं द्वादशमासिकम् ॥ कारयित्वा मुनिस्तस्मै प्रददौ ज्ञानमुत्तमम् ॥ १९ ॥
atha pAzupataM sAkSAdvrataM dvAdazamAsikam ॥ kArayitvA munistasmai pradadau jJAnamuttamam ॥ 19 ॥
This is the twelve-month vow of Pāśupata. The sage had it done and gave him the best knowledge.

तदाप्रभृति तं कृष्णं मुनयश्शंसितव्रताः ॥ दिव्याः पाशुपताः सर्वे परिवृत्योपतस्थिरे ॥ २० ॥
tadAprabhRti taM kRSNaM munayazzaMsitavratAH ॥ divyAH pAzupatAH sarve parivRtyopatasthire ॥ 20 ॥
Since then the divine Pāśupata sages of duly completed rites surrounded him.

ततो गुरुनियोगाद्वै कृष्णः परमशक्तिमान् ॥ तपश्चकार पुत्रार्थं सांबमुद्दिश्य शंकरम् ॥ २१ ॥
tato guruniyogAdvai kRSNaH paramazaktimAn ॥ tapazcakAra putrArthaM sAMbamuddizya zaMkaram ॥ 21 ॥
Then at the behest of his preceptor, Kṛṣṇa of great prowess performed penance for the attainment of a son with Śiva and Pārvatī as the deity aimed at.

तपसो तेन वर्षांते दृष्टो ऽसौ परमेश्वरः ॥ श्रिया परमया युक्तस्सांबश्च सगणश्शिवः ॥ २२ ॥
tapaso tena varSAMte dRSTo 'sau paramezvaraH ॥ zriyA paramayA yuktassAMbazca sagaNazzivaH ॥ 22 ॥
Due to that penance, at the end of a year, lord Śiva, equipped with great splendour and accompanied by his Gaṇas and Pārvatī appeared there.

वरार्थमाविर्भूतस्य हरस्य सुभगाकृतेः ॥ स्तुतिं चकार नत्वासौ कृष्णः सम्यक्कृतांजलिः ॥ २३ ॥
varArthamAvirbhUtasya harasya subhagAkRteH ॥ stutiM cakAra natvAsau kRSNaH samyakkRtAMjaliH ॥ 23 ॥
After bowing to Śiva of handsome features, who appeared before him for granting boons, Kṛṣṇa eulogised him with palms joined in reverence.

सांबं समगणव्यग्रो लब्धवान्पुत्रमात्मनः ॥ तपसा तुष्टचित्तेन दत्तं विष्णोश्शिवेन वै ॥ २४ ॥
sAMbaM samagaNavyagro labdhavAnputramAtmanaH ॥ tapasA tuSTacittena dattaM viSNozzivena vai ॥ 24 ॥
Kṛṣṇa of composed mind obtained his son Samba of good qualities bequeathed by Śiva who was delighted by his penance.

यस्मात्सांबो महादेवः प्रददौ पुत्रमात्मनः ॥ तस्माज्जांबवतीसूनुं सांबं चक्रे स नामतः ॥ २५ ॥
yasmAtsAMbo mahAdevaH pradadau putramAtmanaH ॥ tasmAjjAMbavatIsUnuM sAMbaM cakre sa nAmataH ॥ 25 ॥
Since it was Śiva accompanied by Ambā, who blessed him with a son, he named Jāmbavatī’s son Sāmba.

तदेतत्कथितं सर्वं कृष्णस्यामितकर्मणः ॥ महर्षेर्ज्ञानलाभश्च पुत्रलाभश्च शंकरात् ॥ २६ ॥
tadetatkathitaM sarvaM kRSNasyAmitakarmaNaH ॥ maharSerjJAnalAbhazca putralAbhazca zaMkarAt ॥ 26 ॥
Thus I have narrated to you how Kṛṣṇa of wide activities attained knowledge from the great sage and a son from Śiva.

य इदं कीर्तयेन्नित्यं शृणुयाच्छ्रावयेत्तथा ॥ स विष्णोर्ज्ञानमासाद्य तेनैव सह मोदते ॥ २७ ॥
ya idaM kIrtayennityaM zRNuyAcchrAvayettathA ॥ sa viSNorjJAnamAsAdya tenaiva saha modate ॥ 27 ॥
He who recites this everyday, listens to it or narrates it to others attains Viṣṇu’s wisdom and rejoices with him.
