RSaya UcuH ॥ bhagavaJchrotumicchAmo vrataM pAzupataM param ॥ brahmAdayo 'pi yatkRtvA sarve pAzupatAH smRtAH ॥ 1 ॥
The sages said:— O holy lord, we wish to hear of the great Pāśupatavrata on performing which Brahmā and others have become Pāśupatas.

vAyuruvAca ॥ rahasyaM vaH pravakSyAmi sarvapApanikRntanam ॥ vrataM pAzupataM zrautamatharvazirasi zrutam ॥ 2 ॥
Vāyu said:— I shall tell you the great secret, Pāśupata-vrata that quells all sins. It is mentioned in the upaniṣad Atharvaśiras.

कालश्चैत्री पौर्णमासी देशः शिवपरिग्रहः ॥ क्षेत्रारामाद्यरण्यं वा प्रशस्तश्शुभलक्षणः ॥ ३ ॥
kAlazcaitrI paurNamAsI dezaH zivaparigrahaH ॥ kSetrArAmAdyaraNyaM vA prazastazzubhalakSaNaH ॥ 3 ॥
The time is the month of Chaitra and the full-moon-day therein. The place is anywhere acceptable to Śiva having good characteristics. It shall be auspicious, say, the garden in a holy centre or a forest.

tatra pUrvaM trayodazyAM susnAtaH sukRtAhnikaH ॥ anujJApya svamAcAryaM saMpUjya praNipatya ca ॥ 4 ॥
Earlier on the thirteenth day of the month he had taken a good bath and performed ritualistic ceremonies. Having obtained permission he worshiped his teacher and bowed down to him.

After performing Vaisheshika worship he himself dressed in white robes He wore a white sacred veil and a white garland and was anointed with ointment.

दर्भासने समासीनो दर्भमुष्टिं प्रगृह्य च ॥ प्राणायामत्रयं कृत्वा प्राङ्मुखो वाप्युदङ्मुखः ॥ ध्यात्वा देवं च देवीं च तद्विज्ञापनवर्त्मना ॥ ६ ॥
darbhAsane samAsIno darbhamuSTiM pragRhya ca ॥ prANAyAmatrayaM kRtvA prAGmukho vApyudaGmukhaH ॥ dhyAtvA devaM ca devIM ca tadvijJApanavartmanA ॥ 6 ॥
Sitting on a throne of straw, he held a fistful of straw in his hand. After doing three pranayama, one should face east or north. Meditating on the god and goddess in the path of announcing them.

व्रतमेतत्करोमीति भवेत्संकल्प्य दीक्षितः ॥ यावच्छरीरपातं वा द्वादशाब्दमथापि वा ॥ ७ ॥
vratametatkaromIti bhavetsaMkalpya dIkSitaH ॥ yAvaccharIrapAtaM vA dvAdazAbdamathApi vA ॥ 7 ॥
After resolving to observe this vow one should be initiated Until the fall of the body or for twelve years.

tadardhaM vA tadardhaM vA mAsadvAdazakaM tu vA ॥ tadardhaM vA tadardhaM vA mAsamekamathApi vA ॥ 8 ॥
One and a half months or one and a half months or twelve months One and a half months or one and a half months.

दिनद्वादशकं वा ऽथ दिनषट्कमथापि वा ॥ तदर्धं दिनमेकं वा व्रतसंकल्पनावधि ॥ ९ ॥
dinadvAdazakaM vA 'tha dinaSaTkamathApi vA ॥ tadardhaM dinamekaM vA vratasaMkalpanAvadhi ॥ 9 ॥
It may be twelve days or six days. Half of that or one day until the resolution of the vow.

agnimAdhAya vidhivadvirajAhomakAraNAt ॥ hutvAjyena samidbhizca caruNA ca yathAkramam ॥ 10 ॥
After setting fire to the sacrificial fire in accordance with the prescribed rituals, Having offered oblations in the sacrificial fires and charuna in order.

पूर्णामापूर्य तां भूयस्तत्त्वानां शुद्धिमुद्दिशन् ॥ जुहुयान्मूलमन्त्रेण तैरेव समिदादिभिः ॥ ११ ॥
pUrNAmApUrya tAM bhUyastattvAnAM zuddhimuddizan ॥ juhuyAnmUlamantreNa taireva samidAdibhiH ॥ 11 ॥
Then, filling the fullness of the water, the Lord again instructed the Supreme Personality of Godhead to purify the elements. One should offer oblations with the same sacrificial fire and other objects with the root mantra.

तत्त्वान्येतानि मद्देहे शुद्ध्यंताम् १ त्यनुस्मरन् ॥ पञ्चभूतानि तन्मात्राः पञ्चकर्मेन्द्रियाणि च ॥ १२ ॥
tattvAnyetAni maddehe zuddhyaMtAm 1 tyanusmaran ॥ paJcabhUtAni tanmAtrAH paJcakarmendriyANi ca ॥ 12 ॥
May these elements be purified in My body, 1 remembering them. The five elements are the substances and the five senses of action.

ज्ञानकर्मविभेदेन पञ्चकर्मविभागशः ॥ त्वगादिधातवस्सप्त पञ्च प्राणादिवायवः ॥ १३ ॥
jJAnakarmavibhedena paJcakarmavibhAgazaH ॥ tvagAdidhAtavassapta paJca prANAdivAyavaH ॥ 13 ॥
By the division of knowledge and action, the five actions are divided. The seven elements, such as the skin, are the five airs, such as the life-force.

manobuddhirahaM khyAtirguNAH prakRtipUruSau ॥ rAgo vidyAkale caiva niyatiH kAla eva ca ॥ 14 ॥
I am the mind, intelligence, fame, and the modes of material nature. Passion in the time of learning and fate and time.

माया च शुद्धिविद्या च महेश्वरसदाशिवौ ॥ शक्तिश्च शिवतत्त्वं च तत्त्वानि क्रमशो विदुः ॥ १५ ॥
mAyA ca zuddhividyA ca mahezvarasadAzivau ॥ zaktizca zivatattvaM ca tattvAni kramazo viduH ॥ 15 ॥
Māyā and śuddhividyā are the two modes of material nature. They know the elements Shakti and Shiva Tattva in order.

मन्त्रैस्तु विरजैर्हुत्वा होतासौ विरजा भवेत् ॥ शिवानुग्रहमासाद्य ज्ञानवान्स हि जायते ॥ १६ ॥
mantraistu virajairhutvA hotAsau virajA bhavet ॥ zivAnugrahamAsAdya jJAnavAnsa hi jAyate ॥ 16 ॥
After performing the Homa with the Viraja mantras he is freed from sin. Attaining Śiva’s blessing he is endowed with perfect knowledge.

अथ गोमयमादाय पिण्डीकृत्याभिमंत्र्य च ॥ विन्यस्याग्नौ च सम्प्रोक्ष्य दिने तस्मिन्हविष्यभुक् ॥ १७ ॥
atha gomayamAdAya piNDIkRtyAbhimaMtrya ca ॥ vinyasyAgnau ca samprokSya dine tasminhaviSyabhuk ॥ 17 ॥
He shall collect cowdung and roll it into balls and repeat the mantras over them. He shall place these into the fire and sprinkle with water. That day he shall take in only the cooked rice soaked in ghee.

प्रभाते तु चतुर्दश्यां कृत्वा सर्वं पुरोदितम् ॥ दिने तस्मिन्निराहारः कालं शेषं समापयेत् ॥ १८ ॥
prabhAte tu caturdazyAM kRtvA sarvaM puroditam ॥ dine tasminnirAhAraH kAlaM zeSaM samApayet ॥ 18 ॥
On the morning of the fourteenth day he shall perform everything as mentioned before. On that day he shall observe fast and thus spend the latter part of the day.

प्रातः पर्वणि चाप्येवं कृत्वा होमा वसानतः ॥ उपसंहृत्य रुद्राग्निं गृह्णीयाद्भस्म यत्नतः ॥ १९ ॥
prAtaH parvaNi cApyevaM kRtvA homA vasAnataH ॥ upasaMhRtya rudrAgniM gRhNIyAdbhasma yatnataH ॥ 19 ॥
On the full moon day also he shall perform similar rites. At the conclusion of the sacrifice the sacred fire shall be extinguished and the ashes gathered assiduously.

ततश्च जटिलो मुण्डी शिखैकजट एव वा ॥ भूत्वा स्नात्वा ततो वीतलज्जश्चेत्स्याद्दिगम्बरः ॥ २० ॥
tatazca jaTilo muNDI zikhaikajaTa eva vA ॥ bhUtvA snAtvA tato vItalajjazcetsyAddigambaraH ॥ 20 ॥
Thereafter he shall keep matted hair or shave off the hair completely or keep one matted tuft of hair. He shall take bath then. If he is not extremely bashful he shall remain naked thereafter.

अपि काषायवसनश्चर्मचीराम्बरो ऽथ वा ॥ एकाम्बरो वल्कली वा भवेद्दण्डी च मेखली ॥ २१ ॥
api kASAyavasanazcarmacIrAmbaro 'tha vA ॥ ekAmbaro valkalI vA bhaveddaNDI ca mekhalI ॥ 21 ॥
Or he can wear ochre robes, hide or barks of trees. Only a single cloth or a single bark garment shall be worn. He shall have the staff and the girdle.

प्रक्षाल्य चरणौ पश्चाद्द्विराचम्यात्मनस्तनुम् ॥ संकुलीकृत्य तद्भस्म विरजानलसंभवम् ॥ २२ ॥
prakSAlya caraNau pazcAddvirAcamyAtmanastanum ॥ saMkulIkRtya tadbhasma virajAnalasaMbhavam ॥ 22 ॥
After washing his feet, he should wash his body twice. The ashes produced by the fire were gathered together.

अग्निरित्यादिभिर्मंत्रैः षड्भिराथर्वणैः क्रमात् ॥ विभृज्यांगानि मूर्धादिचरणांतानि तैस्स्पृशेत् ॥ २३ ॥
agnirityAdibhirmaMtraiH SaDbhirAtharvaNaiH kramAt ॥ vibhRjyAMgAni mUrdhAdicaraNAMtAni taisspRzet ॥ 23 ॥
The six Atharva mantras, beginning with Agni, were chanted in this order. With these one should spread the limbs, such as the head and the ends of the feet.

ततस्तेन क्रमेणैव समुद्धृत्य च भस्मना ॥ सर्वांगोद्धूलनं कुर्यात्प्रणवेन शिवेन वा ॥ २४ ॥
tatastena krameNaiva samuddhRtya ca bhasmanA ॥ sarvAMgoddhUlanaM kuryAtpraNavena zivena vA ॥ 24 ॥
Then in the same way he shall dust the body entirely repeating the Praṇava Oṃ and ‘Śiva’.

ततस्त्रिपुण्ड्रं रचयेत्त्रियायुषसमाह्वयम् ॥ शिवभावं समागम्य शिवयोगमथाचरेत् ॥ २५ ॥
tatastripuNDraM racayettriyAyuSasamAhvayam ॥ zivabhAvaM samAgamya zivayogamathAcaret ॥ 25 ॥
Then repeating the mantra ‘Triyāyuṣam’ he shall wear Tripuṇḍra marks. He shall realise his own Śiva-hood and perform ‘Śivayoga’.

कुर्यात्स्त्रिसन्ध्यमप्येवमेतत्पाशुपतं व्रतम् ॥ भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदं चैतत्पशुत्वं विनिवर्तयेत् ॥ २६ ॥
kuryAtstrisandhyamapyevametatpAzupataM vratam ॥ bhuktimuktipradaM caitatpazutvaM vinivartayet ॥ 26 ॥
He shall act thus during all the three Sandhyās. This Pāśupata Vrata yields worldly pleasures and salvation dispelling Paśu-hood.

तत्पशुत्वं परित्यज्य कृत्वा पाशुपतं व्रतम् ॥ पूजनीयो महादेवो लिंगमूर्तिस्सनातनः ॥ २७ ॥
tatpazutvaM parityajya kRtvA pAzupataM vratam ॥ pUjanIyo mahAdevo liMgamUrtissanAtanaH ॥ 27 ॥
Freed from Paśu-hood, the devotee shall worship the phallic image of Śiva.

पद्ममष्टदलं हैमं नवरत्नैरलंकृतम् ॥ कर्णिकाकेशरोपेतमासनं परिकल्पयेत् ॥ २८ ॥
padmamaSTadalaM haimaM navaratnairalaMkRtam ॥ karNikAkezaropetamAsanaM parikalpayet ॥ 28 ॥
It is a golden lotus with eight petals and is adorned with nine gems. A seat should be arranged with earrings and hair.

विभवे तदभावे तु रक्तं सितमथापि वा ॥ पद्मं तस्याप्यभावे तु केवलं भावनामयम् ॥ २९ ॥
vibhave tadabhAve tu raktaM sitamathApi vA ॥ padmaM tasyApyabhAve tu kevalaM bhAvanAmayam ॥ 29 ॥
If it is not available, it may be red or white. The lotus, even in its absence, is merely a feeling.

तत्पद्मकर्णिकामध्ये कृत्वा लिंगं कनीयसम् ॥ स्फाटिकं पीठिकोपेतं पूजयेद्विधिवत्क्रमात् ॥ ३० ॥
tatpadmakarNikAmadhye kRtvA liMgaM kanIyasam ॥ sphATikaM pIThikopetaM pUjayedvidhivatkramAt ॥ 30 ॥
In the middle of the pericarp a small crystal phallic image along with its pedestal shall be kept and worshipped.

प्रतिष्ठाप्य विधानेन तल्लिंगं कृतशोधनम् ॥ परिकल्प्यासनं मूर्तिं पञ्चवक्त्रप्रकारतः ॥ ३१ ॥
pratiSThApya vidhAnena talliMgaM kRtazodhanam ॥ parikalpyAsanaM mUrtiM paJcavaktraprakArataH ॥ 31 ॥
After installing the phallic image in accordance with the rules with due consecrations the pedestal shall be conceived along with the idol of five faces.

paJcagavyAdibhiH pUrNairyathAvibhavasaMbhRtaiH ॥ snApayetkalazaiH pUrNairaSTApadasamudbhavaiH ॥ 32 ॥
The ablution shall be performed with golden vessels, filled with Pañcagavya collected in accordance with one’s capacity.

गंधद्रव्यैस्सकर्पूरैश्चन्दनाद्यैस्सकुंकुमैः ॥ सवेदिकं समालिप्य लिंगं भूषणभूषितम् ॥ ३३ ॥
gaMdhadravyaissakarpUraizcandanAdyaissakuMkumaiH ॥ savedikaM samAlipya liMgaM bhUSaNabhUSitam ॥ 33 ॥
fragrant substances camphor sandalwood and other saffron The altar was painted and the lingam was decorated with ornaments.

बिल्वपत्रैश्च पद्मैश्च रक्तैः श्वेतैस्तथोत्पलैः ॥ नीलोत्पलैस्तथान्यैश्च पुष्पैस्तैस्तैस्सुगंधिभिः ॥ ३४ ॥
bilvapatraizca padmaizca raktaiH zvetaistathotpalaiH ॥ nIlotpalaistathAnyaizca puSpaistaistaissugaMdhibhiH ॥ 34 ॥
There were bilva leaves red lotuses and white lotuses blue lotuses and other fragrant flowers.

There were bilva leaves red lotuses and white lotuses blue lotuses and other fragrant flowers.

dhUpaM dIpaM tathA cApi naivedyaM ca samAdizet ॥ nivedayitvA vibhave kalyANaM ca samAcaret ॥ 36 ॥
Showing of lights, incense and the food offerings shall be made to the deity. After offering it to the deity the devotee shall be engaged in auspicious activities.

इष्टानि च विशिष्टानि न्यायेनोपार्जितानि च ॥ सर्वद्रव्याणि देयानि व्रते तस्मिन्विशेषतः ॥ ३७ ॥
iSTAni ca viziSTAni nyAyenopArjitAni ca ॥ sarvadravyANi deyAni vrate tasminvizeSataH ॥ 37 ॥
In this Vrata exquisite and pleasing things acquired legitimately, whatever they may be, shall be offered to the deity.

श्रीपत्रोत्पलपद्मानां संख्या साहस्रिकी मता ॥ प्रत्येकमपरा संख्या शतमष्टोत्तरं द्विजाः ॥ ३८ ॥
zrIpatrotpalapadmAnAM saMkhyA sAhasrikI matA ॥ pratyekamaparA saMkhyA zatamaSTottaraM dvijAH ॥ 38 ॥
The number of lotuses to be offered is a thousand. O brahmins, with regard to the other flowers it shall be a hundred and eight for each.

तत्रापि च विशेषेण न त्यजेद्बिल्वपत्रकम् ॥ हैममेकं परं प्राहुः पद्मं पद्मसहस्रकात् ॥ ३९ ॥
tatrApi ca vizeSeNa na tyajedbilvapatrakam ॥ haimamekaM paraM prAhuH padmaM padmasahasrakAt ॥ 39 ॥
Even in this case, one should not leave the bilva leaf in any particular place. They say that one golden lotus is better than a thousand lotuses.

On the day of Kārttikī one should worship Vaidruma, and on the month of Margaśīrṣaka one should worship Vaidūrya. It is made of flowers and gems in the month of Pausa and Magha.

If gold is not available silver, copper, rock or clay shall be used for making the phallic idol whichever is available. Even lac can be used.

The gícat virility of the Rudra fire is what is glorified as the ashes. Hence a person possessing the ashes is a virile and powerful person at all times.

A person who has bathed with the ashes is called Bhasmaniṣṭha. His faults perish due to the contact of Bhasma fire.

It is called Bhasita because it shines; Bhasma because it devours sins; Bhūti because it causes prosperity and Rakṣā because it protects.

This Bhasma is a great weapon of the devotees of Śiva. It is a divine missile whereby the mishaps of the elder brother of Dhaumya in the course of his penance had been removed.

Hence one should endeavour in all possible ways to collect Bhasma like wealth after performing the Pāśupata vrata and be engaged in Bhasma-bath.
