RSaya UcuH ॥ kiM tacchreSTamanuSThAnaM mokSo yenaparokSitaH ॥ tattasya sAdhanaM cAdya vaktumarhasi mAruta ॥ 1 ॥
The sages said:— What is that excellent practice of holy rites, whereby salvation is directly acquired? O Māruta, it behoves you to explain it as well as its means.

Vāyu said:— What is termed excellent practice is the great cult of Śiva wherein Śiva the bestower of salvation is directly perceived.

स तु पञ्चविधो ज्ञेयः पञ्चभिः पर्वभिः क्रमात् ॥ क्रियातपोजपध्यानज्ञानात्मभिरनुत्तरैः ॥ ३ ॥
sa tu paJcavidho jJeyaH paJcabhiH parvabhiH kramAt ॥ kriyAtapojapadhyAnajJAnAtmabhiranuttaraiH ॥ 3 ॥
It is fivefold divided into five sections, holy rites, penance, japa, meditation and knowledge.

तैरेव सोत्तरैस्सिद्धो धर्मस्तु परमो मतः ॥ परोक्षमपरोक्षं च ज्ञानं यत्र च मोक्षदम् ॥ ४ ॥
taireva sottaraissiddho dharmastu paramo mataH ॥ parokSamaparokSaM ca jJAnaM yatra ca mokSadam ॥ 4 ॥
The five activities along with attendant virtuous rites constitute the greatest Dharma. Thereby one attains the direct and indirect knowledge that bestows salvation.

paramo 'paramazcobhau dharmau hi zruticoditau ॥ dharmazabdAbhidheyerthe pramANaM zrutireva naH ॥ 5 ॥
The two Dharmas the higher and secondary are mentioned in the Vedas. In the matter of Dharma the Vedas constitute the final authority for us.

paramo yogaparyanto dharmaH zrutizirogataH ॥ dharmastvaparamastadvadadhaH zrutimukhotthitaH ॥ 6 ॥
The higher dharma upto the practice of Yoga is mentioned in the Vedantic section of the Vedas. The secondary Dharma is mentioned in the Karmakāṇḍa section of the same.

apazvAtmAdhikAratvAdyo dharamaH paramo mataH ॥ sAdhAraNastato 'nyastu sarveSAmadhikArataH ॥ 7 ॥
The Ātmans freed from Pāśa are authorised in the higher Dharma and in the other one, every one is authorised.

स चायं परमो धर्मः परधर्मस्य साधनम् ॥ धर्मशास्त्रादिभिस्सम्यक्सांग एवोपबृंहितः ॥ ८ ॥
sa cAyaM paramo dharmaH paradharmasya sAdhanam ॥ dharmazAstrAdibhissamyaksAMga evopabRMhitaH ॥ 8 ॥
This higher Dharma is the means for achieving the greatest virtue of Śiva. It shall be supplemented in all parts by Dhasmaśāstras and other holy treatises.

In the Śaiva Āgamas a detailed explanation of every thing including the consecratory rites is given.

The Śaiva Āgama is of two varieties: Śrauta and Aśrauta. The Śrauta consists of condensed Vedic texts; the other one consists of independent texts but well consecrated.

The independent texts were originally ten but supplemented subsequently by eight more so as to constitute eighteen texts. They are called Kāmika etc., and the entire literature is called “Śaiva Siddhānta”

The Śrauta literature consists of a billion verses. In it the Pāśupata Vrata and Jñāna are explained.

युगावर्तेषु शिष्येत योगाचार्यस्वरूपिणा ॥ तत्रतत्रावतीर्णेन शिवेनैव प्रवर्त्यते ॥ १४ ॥
yugAvarteSu ziSyeta yogAcAryasvarUpiNA ॥ tatratatrAvatIrNena zivenaiva pravartyate ॥ 14 ॥
In every circle of Yugas, Śiva incarnates as Yogācārya in different places and propagates yoga.

संक्षिप्यास्य प्रवक्तारश्चत्वारः परमर्षय ॥ रुरुर्दधीचो ऽगस्त्यश्च उपमन्युर्महायशाः ॥ १५ ॥
saMkSipyAsya pravaktArazcatvAraH paramarSaya ॥ rururdadhIco 'gastyazca upamanyurmahAyazAH ॥ 15 ॥
The four great sages Ruru, Dadhīca, Agastya and the renowned Upamanyu have condensed these principles and propagated them.

ते च पाशुपता ज्ञेयास्संहितानां प्रवर्तकाः ॥ तत्संततीया गुरवः शतशो ऽथ सहस्रशः ॥ १६ ॥
te ca pAzupatA jJeyAssaMhitAnAM pravartakAH ॥ tatsaMtatIyA guravaH zatazo 'tha sahasrazaH ॥ 16 ॥
They are all Pāśupatas and exponents of the Saṃhitās. Hundreds and thousands of their descendants have been the preceptors of their principles.

तत्रोक्तः परमो धर्मश्चर्याद्यात्मा चतुर्विधः ॥ तेषु पाशुपतो योगः शिवं प्रत्यक्षयेद्दृढम् ॥ १७ ॥
tatroktaH paramo dharmazcaryAdyAtmA caturvidhaH ॥ teSu pAzupato yogaH zivaM pratyakSayeddRDham ॥ 17 ॥
The great virtue of Śiva mentioned before is four-fold with regular performance and observance as the basic Atman for them. Among them the Pāśupata yoga facilitates the direct perception of Siva.

तस्माच्छ्रेष्ठमनुष्ठानं योगः पाशुपतो मतः ॥ तत्राप्युपायको युक्तो ब्रह्मणा स तु कथ्यते ॥ १८ ॥
tasmAcchreSThamanuSThAnaM yogaH pAzupato mataH ॥ tatrApyupAyako yukto brahmaNA sa tu kathyate ॥ 18 ॥
Hence the excellent practice is this Pāśupata Yoga. The mode of it as practised by Brahmā shall now be mentioned.

नामाष्टकमयो योगश्शिवेन परिकल्पितः ॥ तेन योगेन सहसा शैवी प्रज्ञा प्रजायते ॥ १९ ॥
nAmASTakamayo yogazzivena parikalpitaH ॥ tena yogena sahasA zaivI prajJA prajAyate ॥ 19 ॥
This is Nāmāṣṭakayoga prescribed by Śiva himself. By means of this Yoga the discernment of Śiva is generated.

प्रज्ञया परमं ज्ञानमचिराल्लभते स्थिरम् ॥ प्रसीदति शिवस्तस्य यस्य ज्ञानं प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥ २० ॥
prajJayA paramaM jJAnamacirAllabhate sthiram ॥ prasIdati zivastasya yasya jJAnaM pratiSThitam ॥ 20 ॥
Through this discernment the stable and perfect knowledge is attained ere long. Śiva is delighted with him whose knowledge is well-founded.

प्रसादात्परमो योगो यः शिवं चापरोक्षयेत् ॥ शिवापरोक्षात्संसारकारणेन वियुज्यते ॥ २१ ॥
prasAdAtparamo yogo yaH zivaM cAparokSayet ॥ zivAparokSAtsaMsArakAraNena viyujyate ॥ 21 ॥
Thanks to his grace the great Yoga is attained which facilitates the direct perception of Śiva. By perceiving Śiva directly the cause of worldly existence (saṃsāra) is quelled.

ततः स्यान्मुक्तसंसारो मुक्तः शिवसमो भवेत् ॥ ब्रह्मप्रोक्त इत्युपायः स एव पृथगुच्यते ॥ २२ ॥
tataH syAnmuktasaMsAro muktaH zivasamo bhavet ॥ brahmaprokta ityupAyaH sa eva pRthagucyate ॥ 22 ॥
Then the devotee is liberated from worldly existence and being liberated he becomes identical with Śiva. The means mentioned by Brahmā is now separately mentioned here.

शिवो महेश्वरश्चैव रुद्रो विष्णुः पितामहः ॥ संसारवैद्यः सर्वज्ञः परमात्मेति मुख्यतः ॥ २३ ॥
zivo mahezvarazcaiva rudro viSNuH pitAmahaH ॥ saMsAravaidyaH sarvajJaH paramAtmeti mukhyataH ॥ 23 ॥
Lord Śiva, Lord Maheśvara, Lord Rudra and Lord Viṣṇu are the grandfathers. He is the physician of the world and the omniscient Supreme Soul chiefly.

नामाष्टकमिदं मुख्यं शिवस्य प्रतिपादकम् ॥ आद्यन्तु पञ्चकं ज्ञेयं शान्त्यतीताद्यनुक्रमात् ॥ २४ ॥
nAmASTakamidaM mukhyaM zivasya pratipAdakam ॥ Adyantu paJcakaM jJeyaM zAntyatItAdyanukramAt ॥ 24 ॥
This eightfold name is the chief expression of Lord Śiva. The first five should be understood in order of peace, past and present.

संज्ञा सदाशिवादीनां पञ्चोपाधिपरिग्रहात् ॥ उपाधिविनिवृत्तौ तु यथास्वं विनिवर्तते ॥ २५ ॥
saMjJA sadAzivAdInAM paJcopAdhiparigrahAt ॥ upAdhivinivRttau tu yathAsvaM vinivartate ॥ 25 ॥
The name Sadaśiva and others are known as the five elements. When the title is withdrawn, it withdraws as it is.

पदमेव हि तन्नित्यमनित्याः पदिनः स्मृताः ॥ पदानां प्रतिकृत्तौ तु मुच्यन्ते पदिनो यतः ॥ २६ ॥
padameva hi tannityamanityAH padinaH smRtAH ॥ padAnAM pratikRttau tu mucyante padino yataH ॥ 26 ॥
The steps themselves are considered to be eternal and impermanent. When the footsteps are replicated the footsteps are released.

परिवृत्त्यन्तरे भूयस्तत्पदप्राप्तिरुच्यते ॥ आत्मान्तराभिधानं स्याद्यदाद्यं नाम पञ्चकम् ॥ २७ ॥
parivRttyantare bhUyastatpadaprAptirucyate ॥ AtmAntarAbhidhAnaM syAdyadAdyaM nAma paJcakam ॥ 27 ॥
After the revolution, it is called the attainment of the same position again. The fifth name of the first is the expression of the self.

अन्यत्तु त्रितयं नाम्नामुपादानादियोगतः ॥ त्रिविधोपाधिवचनाच्छिव एवानुवर्तते ॥ २८ ॥
anyattu tritayaM nAmnAmupAdAnAdiyogataH ॥ trividhopAdhivacanAcchiva evAnuvartate ॥ 28 ॥
There are three other names, namely, the combination of the elements and the elements. From the words of the threefold title, Shiva alone follows.

अनादिमलसंश्लेषः प्रागभावात्स्वभावतः ॥ अत्यंतं परिशुद्धात्मेत्यतो ऽयं शिव उच्यते ॥ २९ ॥
anAdimalasaMzleSaH prAgabhAvAtsvabhAvataH ॥ atyaMtaM parizuddhAtmetyato 'yaM ziva ucyate ॥ 29 ॥
It is by nature a synthesis of the eternal impurities because of its pre-existence. He is called Shiva because he is extremely pure in self.

अथवाशेषकल्याणगुणैकधन ईश्वरः ॥ शिव इत्युच्यते सद्भिश्शिवतत्त्वार्थवादिभिः ॥ ३० ॥
athavAzeSakalyANaguNaikadhana IzvaraH ॥ ziva ityucyate sadbhizzivatattvArthavAdibhiH ॥ 30 ॥
Or maybe the Lord is the only wealth of the remaining auspicious qualities. He is called Shiva by the virtuous who speak the truth and meaning of Shiva.

त्रयोविंशतितत्त्वेभ्यः प्रकृतिर्हि परा मता ॥ प्रकृतेस्तु परं प्राहुः पुरुषं पञ्चविंशकम् ॥ ३१ ॥
trayoviMzatitattvebhyaH prakRtirhi parA matA ॥ prakRtestu paraM prAhuH puruSaM paJcaviMzakam ॥ 31 ॥
Nature is considered to be the highest of the twenty-three elements. They say that the twenty-fifth person is beyond nature.

यं वेदादौ स्वरं प्राहुर्वाच्यवाचकभावतः ॥ वेदैकवेद्ययाथात्म्याद्वेदान्ते च प्रतिष्ठितः ॥ ३२ ॥
yaM vedAdau svaraM prAhurvAcyavAcakabhAvataH ॥ vedaikavedyayAthAtmyAdvedAnte ca pratiSThitaH ॥ 32 ॥
In the beginning of the Vedas the sound is called the vowel because it is the signifier of the word. He is established in the Vedanta because of the truthfulness of the Vedas as the only Vedas.

तस्य प्रकृतिलीनस्य यः परस्स महेश्वरः ॥ तदधीनप्रवृत्तित्वात्प्रकृतेः पुरुषस्य च ॥ ३३ ॥
tasya prakRtilInasya yaH parassa mahezvaraH ॥ tadadhInapravRttitvAtprakRteH puruSasya ca ॥ 33 ॥
The Supreme Lord is the Supreme Lord who is merged in nature. Because of the instinct of nature and man under it.

अथवा त्रिगुणं तत्त्वमुपेयमिदमव्ययम् ॥ मायान्तु प्रकृतिं विद्यान्मायिनं तु महेश्वरम् ॥ ३४ ॥
athavA triguNaM tattvamupeyamidamavyayam ॥ mAyAntu prakRtiM vidyAnmAyinaM tu mahezvaram ॥ 34 ॥
Or else this inexhaustible threefold truth can be approached. One should know that nature is illusory and that the illusory is the Supreme Lord.

मायाविक्षोभको ऽनंतो महेश्वरसमन्वयात् ॥ कालात्मा परमात्मादिः स्थूलः सूक्ष्मः प्रकीर्तितः ॥ ३५ ॥
mAyAvikSobhako 'naMto mahezvarasamanvayAt ॥ kAlAtmA paramAtmAdiH sthUlaH sUkSmaH prakIrtitaH ॥ 35 ॥
He is infinitely perturbed by the illusory energy, because he is in harmony with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The gross and subtle elements of time, the Supreme Self and others are described.

रुद्दुःखं दुःखहेतुर्वा तद्रावयति नः प्रभुः ॥ रुद्र इत्युच्यते सद्भिः शिवः परमकारणम् ॥ ३६ ॥
rudduHkhaM duHkhaheturvA tadrAvayati naH prabhuH ॥ rudra ityucyate sadbhiH zivaH paramakAraNam ॥ 36 ॥
The explanation of the word Rudra:—‘Rud’ means misery and ‘Drāvayati’ means ‘routs’. Since the lord quells our misery he is called Rudra. He is Śiva, the great cause.

तत्त्वादिभूतपर्यन्तं शरीरादिष्वतन्द्रितः ॥ व्याप्याधितिष्ठति शिवस्ततो रुद्र इतस्ततः ॥ ३७ ॥
tattvAdibhUtaparyantaM zarIrAdiSvatandritaH ॥ vyApyAdhitiSThati zivastato rudra itastataH ॥ 37 ॥
Śiva pervades all living beings, the principles and elements. He is wakefully present in the bodies and presides over them. Hence he is called Viṣṇu.

जगतः पितृभूतानां शिवो मूर्त्यात्मनामपि ॥ पितृभावेन सर्वेषां पितामह उदीरितः ॥ ३८ ॥
jagataH pitRbhUtAnAM zivo mUrtyAtmanAmapi ॥ pitRbhAvena sarveSAM pitAmaha udIritaH ॥ 38 ॥
Śiva is the progenitor of the souls that have attained the status of fathers. He is therefore called the grandfather.

निदानज्ञो यथा वैद्यो रोगस्य विनिवर्तकः ॥ उपायैर्भेषजैस्तद्वल्लयभोगाधिकारतः ॥ ३९ ॥
nidAnajJo yathA vaidyo rogasya vinivartakaH ॥ upAyairbheSajaistadvallayabhogAdhikArataH ॥ 39 ॥
Just as a physician who knows how to diagnose disease can prevent it By means of medicines and by the right to enjoy that garland.

संसारस्येश्वरो नित्यं समूलस्य निवर्तकः ॥ संसारवैद्य इत्युक्तः सर्वतत्त्वार्थवेदिभिः ॥ ४० ॥
saMsArasyezvaro nityaM samUlasya nivartakaH ॥ saMsAravaidya ityuktaH sarvatattvArthavedibhiH ॥ 40 ॥
He is the lord of this world and always the destroyer of the whole world. He is called the physician of the world by those who know the meaning of all truths.

After offering eight oblations in the navel, one should offer oblations of full oblations. After offering eight flowers he performed the final worship.

He obtains his reputation and his excellent conduct And having attained the supreme yoga he is undoubtedly liberated.
