vAyuruvAca ॥ nivedayAmi jagato vAgarthAtmyaM kRtaM yathA ॥ SaDadhvavedanaM samyaksamAsAnna tu vistarAt ॥ 1 ॥
Vāyu said:— I shall mention briefly how the universe in the form of “Vāg-Artha” can be known through the six pathways.

नास्ति कश्चिदशब्दार्थो नापि शब्दो निरर्थकः ॥ ततो हि समये शब्दस्सर्वस्सर्वार्थबोधकः ॥ २ ॥
nAsti kazcidazabdArtho nApi zabdo nirarthakaH ॥ tato hi samaye zabdassarvassarvArthabodhakaH ॥ 2 ॥
There is nothing that is not the meaning of a word. There is no word without meaning. Therefore all words make all meanings known in their proper time.

प्रकृतेः परिणामो ऽयं द्विधा शब्दार्थभावना ॥ तामाहुः प्राकृतीं मूर्तिं शिवयोः परमात्मनोः ॥ ३ ॥
prakRteH pariNAmo 'yaM dvidhA zabdArthabhAvanA ॥ tAmAhuH prAkRtIM mUrtiM zivayoH paramAtmanoH ॥ 3 ॥
The two words and their meanings are the transformations of Prakṛti which is form of Śiva and Śivā.

शब्दात्मिका विभूतिर्या सा त्रिधा कथ्यते बुधैः ॥ स्थूला सूक्ष्मा परा चेति स्थूला या श्रुतिगोचरा ॥ ४ ॥
zabdAtmikA vibhUtiryA sA tridhA kathyate budhaiH ॥ sthUlA sUkSmA parA ceti sthUlA yA zrutigocarA ॥ 4 ॥
The magnificence in the form of word is mentioned as threefold by scholars—gross, subtle and the great. The gross one is what we hear with our ears.

sUkSmA cintAmayI proktA ciMtayA rahitA parA ॥ yA zaktiH sA parA zaktizzivatattvasamAzrayA ॥ 5 ॥
The subtle form of anxiety is described as the transcendental form devoid of anxiety. That power which is the supreme power is the shelter of the essence of Lord Śiva.

ज्ञानशक्तिसमायोगादिच्छोपोद्बलिका तथा ॥ सर्वशक्तिसमष्ट्यात्मा शक्तितत्त्वसमाख्यया ॥ ६ ॥
jJAnazaktisamAyogAdicchopodbalikA tathA ॥ sarvazaktisamaSTyAtmA zaktitattvasamAkhyayA ॥ 6 ॥
By the combination of knowledge and power she is also strong in desire The Supreme Soul is the embodiment of all energies and is therefore known as the element of energy.

समस्तकार्यजातस्य मूलप्रकृतितां गता ॥ सैव कुण्डलिनी माया शुद्धाध्वपरमा सती ॥ ७ ॥
samastakAryajAtasya mUlaprakRtitAM gatA ॥ saiva kuNDalinI mAyA zuddhAdhvaparamA satI ॥ 7 ॥
She became the root cause of all activities. That is the earrings, the illusory energy, which is pure and transcendental.

सा विभागस्वरूपैव षडध्वात्मा विजृंभते ॥ तत्र शब्दास्त्रयो ऽध्वानस्त्रयश्चार्थाः समीरिताः ॥ ८ ॥
sA vibhAgasvarUpaiva SaDadhvAtmA vijRMbhate ॥ tatra zabdAstrayo 'dhvAnastrayazcArthAH samIritAH ॥ 8 ॥
That sixfold self expands in the form of divisions. There are three sounds, three paths and three meanings.

सर्वेषामपि वै पुंसां नैजशुद्ध्यनुरूपतः ॥ लयभोगाधिकारास्स्युस्सर्वतत्त्वविभागतः ॥ ९ ॥
sarveSAmapi vai puMsAM naijazuddhyanurUpataH ॥ layabhogAdhikArAssyussarvatattvavibhAgataH ॥ 9 ॥
For all men, it is according to their own purity. They should have the right to enjoy the rhythm by division of all the elements.

कलाभिस्तानि तत्त्वानि व्याप्तान्येव यथातथम् ॥ परस्याः प्रकृतेरादौ पञ्चधा परिणामतः ॥ १० ॥
kalAbhistAni tattvAni vyAptAnyeva yathAtatham ॥ parasyAH prakRterAdau paJcadhA pariNAmataH ॥ 10 ॥
The arts pervade all these elements in their true form. In the beginning of the other nature, there are five kinds of results.

कलाश्च ता निवृत्त्याद्याः पर्याप्ता इति निश्चयः ॥ मंत्राध्वा च पदाध्वा च वर्णाध्वा चेति शब्दतः ॥ ११ ॥
kalAzca tA nivRttyAdyAH paryAptA iti nizcayaH ॥ maMtrAdhvA ca padAdhvA ca varNAdhvA ceti zabdataH ॥ 11 ॥
It is certain that those arts such as renunciation are sufficient They are called mantras, padadhvas, varṇadhvas and varṇadhvas.

भुवनाध्वा च तत्त्वाध्वा कलाध्वा चार्थतः क्रमात् ॥ अत्रान्योन्यं च सर्वेषां व्याप्यव्यापकतोच्यते ॥ १२ ॥
bhuvanAdhvA ca tattvAdhvA kalAdhvA cArthataH kramAt ॥ atrAnyonyaM ca sarveSAM vyApyavyApakatocyate ॥ 12 ॥
From the world, from the elements, from the arts, and from the arts, one after another, in order. Here it is said that the pervasive and pervasiveness of all is mutually exclusive.

मंत्राः सर्वैः पदैर्व्याप्ता वाक्यभावात्पदानि च ॥ वर्णैर्वर्णसमूहं हि पदमाहुर्विपश्चितः ॥ १३ ॥
maMtrAH sarvaiH padairvyAptA vAkyabhAvAtpadAni ca ॥ varNairvarNasamUhaM hi padamAhurvipazcitaH ॥ 13 ॥
The mantras are pervaded by the words constituting the statement. The words are pervaded by letters. Learned men call the group of letters a word.

वर्णास्तु भुवनैर्व्याप्तास्तेषां तेषूपलंभनात् ॥ भुवनान्यपि तत्त्वौघैरुत्पत्त्यांतर्बहिष्क्रमात् ॥ १४ ॥
varNAstu bhuvanairvyAptAsteSAM teSUpalaMbhanAt ॥ bhuvanAnyapi tattvaughairutpattyAMtarbahiSkramAt ॥ 14 ॥
The varṇas are pervaded by the varṇas, because they are perceived in them. The worlds are also created by the floods of elements, within and without.

व्याप्तानि कारणैस्तत्त्वैरारब्धत्वादनेकशः ॥ अंतरादुत्थितानीह भुवनानि तु कानिचित् ॥ १५ ॥
vyAptAni kAraNaistattvairArabdhatvAdanekazaH ॥ aMtarAdutthitAnIha bhuvanAni tu kAnicit ॥ 15 ॥
They are pervaded by various causes and elements because they are initiated. Some of these worlds have risen from the space between the two worlds.

पौराणिकानि चान्यानि विज्ञेयानि शिवागमे ॥ सांख्ययोगप्रसिद्धानि तत्त्वान्यपि च कानिचित् ॥ १६ ॥
paurANikAni cAnyAni vijJeyAni zivAgame ॥ sAMkhyayogaprasiddhAni tattvAnyapi ca kAnicit ॥ 16 ॥
Other mythological accounts should be understood of the arrival of Lord Śiva. Some of the principles of Sāṅkhya and Yoga are also well known.

शिवशास्त्रप्रसिद्धानि ततोन्यान्यपि कृत्स्नशः ॥ कलाभिस्तानि तत्त्वानि व्याप्तान्येव यथातथम् ॥ १७ ॥
zivazAstraprasiddhAni tatonyAnyapi kRtsnazaH ॥ kalAbhistAni tattvAni vyAptAnyeva yathAtatham ॥ 17 ॥
There are many others that are well known in the scriptures of Lord Śiva. The arts pervade all these elements in their true form.

परस्याः प्रकृतेरादौ पञ्चधा परिणामतः ॥ कलाश्च ता निवृत्त्याद्या व्याप्ताः पञ्च यथोत्तरम् ॥ १८ ॥
parasyAH prakRterAdau paJcadhA pariNAmataH ॥ kalAzca tA nivRttyAdyA vyAptAH paJca yathottaram ॥ 18 ॥
In the beginning of the other nature there are five kinds of consequences The five arts, beginning with renunciation, are covered as follows.

व्यापिकातः परा शक्तिरविभक्ता षडध्वनाम् ॥ परप्रकृतिभावस्य तत्सत्त्वाच्छिवतत्त्वतः ॥ १९ ॥
vyApikAtaH parA zaktiravibhaktA SaDadhvanAm ॥ paraprakRtibhAvasya tatsattvAcchivatattvataH ॥ 19 ॥
The undivided Śakti pervades the six paths. She is pervaded by Śivatattva.

शक्त्यादि च पृथिव्यन्तं शिवतत्त्वसमुद्भवम् ॥ व्याप्तमेकेन तेनैव मृदा कुंभादिकं यथा ॥ २० ॥
zaktyAdi ca pRthivyantaM zivatattvasamudbhavam ॥ vyAptamekena tenaiva mRdA kuMbhAdikaM yathA ॥ 20 ॥
Everything from Śakti to Earth is born of Śivatattva and pervaded by it alone just as pot etc. are pervaded by clay.

शैवं तत्परमं धाम यत्प्राप्यं षड्भिरध्वभिः ॥ व्यापिका ऽव्यापिका शक्तिः पञ्चतत्त्वविशोधनात् ॥ २१ ॥
zaivaM tatparamaM dhAma yatprApyaM SaDbhiradhvabhiH ॥ vyApikA 'vyApikA zaktiH paJcatattvavizodhanAt ॥ 21 ॥
The great abode of Śiva is attainable through six paths. The non-pervading Śakti becomes pervasive by the purification by five Tattvas.

निवृत्त्या रुद्रपर्यन्तं स्थितिरण्डस्य शोध्यते ॥ प्रतिष्ठया तदूर्ध्वं तु यावदव्यक्तगोचरम् ॥ २२ ॥
nivRttyA rudraparyantaM sthitiraNDasya zodhyate ॥ pratiSThayA tadUrdhvaM tu yAvadavyaktagocaram ॥ 22 ॥
The situation of the cosmic egg upto Rudra is purified by Nivṛtti. Above that upto the sphere of Avyakta It is purified by Pratiṣṭhā.

तदूर्ध्वं विद्यया मध्ये यावद्विश्वेश्वरावधि ॥ शान्त्या तदूर्ध्वं मध्वान्ते विशुद्धिः शान्त्यतीतया ॥ २३ ॥
tadUrdhvaM vidyayA madhye yAvadvizvezvarAvadhi ॥ zAntyA tadUrdhvaM madhvAnte vizuddhiH zAntyatItayA ॥ 23 ॥
Above that upto Viśveśvara it is purified by Vidyā in the middle. Above that it is purified by Śānti. At the end of the path the purification is through Śāntyatīta.

यामाहुः परमं व्योम परप्रकृतियोगतः ॥ एतानि पञ्चतत्त्वानि यैर्व्याप्तमखिलं जगत् ॥ २४ ॥
yAmAhuH paramaM vyoma paraprakRtiyogataH ॥ etAni paJcatattvAni yairvyAptamakhilaM jagat ॥ 24 ॥
It is this they call the greatest firmament in view of the contact with Parāprakṛti. These are the five Tattvas whereby the entire universe is pervaded.

तत्रैव सर्वमेवेदं द्रष्टव्यं खलु साधकैः ॥ अध्वव्याप्तिमविज्ञाय शुद्धिं यः कर्तुमिच्छति ॥ २५ ॥
tatraiva sarvamevedaM draSTavyaM khalu sAdhakaiH ॥ adhvavyAptimavijJAya zuddhiM yaH kartumicchati ॥ 25 ॥
There, indeed, the seekers should see all this. Anyone who wishes to purify himself without understanding the extent of his journey.

स विप्रलम्भकः शुद्धेर्नालम्प्रापयितुं फलम् ॥ वृथा परिश्रमस्तस्य निरयायैव केवलम् ॥ २६ ॥
sa vipralambhakaH zuddhernAlamprApayituM phalam ॥ vRthA parizramastasya nirayAyaiva kevalam ॥ 26 ॥
That deceiver is not able to obtain the fruits of purity His efforts are in vain and he will only go to hell.

शक्तिपातसमायोगादृते तत्त्वानि तत्त्वतः ॥ तद्व्याप्तिस्तद्विवृद्धिश्च ज्ञातुमेवं न शक्यते ॥ २७ ॥
zaktipAtasamAyogAdRte tattvAni tattvataH ॥ tadvyAptistadvivRddhizca jJAtumevaM na zakyate ॥ 27 ॥
It is not possible to know the Tattvas factually nor their pervasiveness nor increase without the union of Śakti and the individual soul.

शक्तिराज्ञा परा शैवी चिद्रूपा मरमेश्वरी ॥ शिवो ऽधितिष्ठत्यखिलं यया कारणभूतया ॥ २८ ॥
zaktirAjJA parA zaivI cidrUpA maramezvarI ॥ zivo 'dhitiSThatyakhilaM yayA kAraNabhUtayA ॥ 28 ॥
Śakti is the order of Śiva in the form of cit. With that as the cause Śiva presides over everything.

नात्मनो नैव मायैषा न विकारो विचारतः ॥ न बंधो नापि मुक्तिश्च बंधमुक्तिविधायिनी ॥ २९ ॥
nAtmano naiva mAyaiSA na vikAro vicArataH ॥ na baMdho nApi muktizca baMdhamuktividhAyinI ॥ 29 ॥
It is not of the nature of the Ātman nor of Māyā nor of secondary nature. It is neither bondage nor liberation but it causes bondage and liberation.

सर्वैश्वर्यपराकाष्टा शिवस्य व्यभिचारिणी ॥ समानधर्मिणी तस्य तैस्तैर्भावैर्विशेषतः ॥ ३० ॥
sarvaizvaryaparAkASTA zivasya vyabhicAriNI ॥ samAnadharmiNI tasya taistairbhAvairvizeSataH ॥ 30 ॥
She is the acme of Śiva’s lordship never swerving. By means of sensations she is of the same traits as he.

स तयैव गृही सापि तेनैव गृहिणी सदा ॥ तयोरपत्यं यत्कार्यं परप्रकृतिजं जगत् ॥ ३१ ॥
sa tayaiva gRhI sApi tenaiva gRhiNI sadA ॥ tayorapatyaM yatkAryaM paraprakRtijaM jagat ॥ 31 ॥
With her alone he is a householder and with him alone she is a housewife always. As a result of their union the universe is the offspring.

स कर्ता कारणं सेति तयोर्भेदो व्यवस्थितः ॥ एक एव शिवः साक्षाद्द्विधा ऽसौ समवस्थितः ॥ ३२ ॥
sa kartA kAraNaM seti tayorbhedo vyavasthitaH ॥ eka eva zivaH sAkSAddvidhA 'sau samavasthitaH ॥ 32 ॥
Their difference is specified in this that he is the maker and she is the cause. The single Śiva himself stands two-fold.

स्त्रीपुंसभावेन तयोर्भेद इत्यपि केचन ॥ अपरे तु परा शक्तिः शिवस्य समवायिनी ॥ ३३ ॥
strIpuMsabhAvena tayorbheda ityapi kecana ॥ apare tu parA zaktiH zivasya samavAyinI ॥ 33 ॥
Some say that there is a difference between male and female. In others, the supreme power is the combination of Lord Śiva.

प्रभेव भानोश्चिद्रूपा भिन्नैवेति व्यवस्थितः ॥ तस्माच्छिवः परो हेतुस्तस्याज्ञा परमेश्वरी ॥ ३४ ॥
prabheva bhAnozcidrUpA bhinnaiveti vyavasthitaH ॥ tasmAcchivaH paro hetustasyAjJA paramezvarI ॥ 34 ॥
He argued that the sun’s rays are different from each other’s forms. Therefore Lord Śiva is the supreme cause, and His command is the Supreme Lord.

तयैव प्रेरिता शैवी मूलप्रकृतिरव्यया ॥ महामाया च माया च प्रकृतिस्त्रिगुणेति च ॥ ३५ ॥
tayaiva preritA zaivI mUlaprakRtiravyayA ॥ mahAmAyA ca mAyA ca prakRtistriguNeti ca ॥ 35 ॥
The inexhaustible original nature of Lord Śiva was inspired by that very same energy. The three modes of material nature are called mahāmāyā and māyā.

त्रिविधा कार्यवेधेन सा प्रसूते षडध्वनः ॥ स वागर्थमयश्चाध्वा षड्विधो निखिलं जगत् ॥ ३६ ॥
trividhA kAryavedhena sA prasUte SaDadhvanaH ॥ sa vAgarthamayazcAdhvA SaDvidho nikhilaM jagat ॥ 36 ॥
By the three kinds of working vessels she gives birth to six sounds. The entire universe is composed of six kinds of speech and meaning.
