The sages said:— After assuming fair complexion how did the goddess, the daughter of the excellent mountain look at her husband on entering the mansion?

What was done by the Gaṇeśas at the portals at her entry? What did the lord do?

vAyuruvAca ॥ pravaktumaMjasA 'zakyaH tAdRzaH paramo rasaH ॥ yena praNayagarbheNa bhAvo bhAvavatAM hRtaH ॥ 3 ॥
Vāyu said:— It is impossible to narrate adequately such an exquisite sentiment couched in love whereby the imagination of all sentimental people has been captured.

द्वास्थैस्ससंभ्रमैरेव देवो देव्यागमोत्सुकः ॥ शंकमाना प्रविष्टान्तस्तञ्च सा समपश्यत ॥ ४ ॥
dvAsthaissasaMbhramaireva devo devyAgamotsukaH ॥ zaMkamAnA praviSTAntastaJca sA samapazyata ॥ 4 ॥
She was received by the doorkeepers in full flutter and agitation. The lord was eagerly awaiting her arrival. Entering within the mansion she hesitatingly glanced at the lord.

तैस्तैः प्रणयभावैश्च भवनान्तरवर्तिभिः ॥ गणेन्द्रैर्वन्दिता वाचा प्रणनाम त्रियम्बकम् ॥ ५ ॥
taistaiH praNayabhAvaizca bhavanAntaravartibhiH ॥ gaNendrairvanditA vAcA praNanAma triyambakam ॥ 5 ॥
She was welcomed by the inmates of the mansion with loving feelings. She was saluted by the Gaṇa chiefs with words of welcome. She bowed to lord Śiva.

प्रणम्य नोत्थिता यावत्तावत्तां परमेश्वरः ॥ प्रगृह्य दोर्भ्यामाश्लिष्य परितः परया मुदा ॥ ६ ॥
praNamya notthitA yAvattAvattAM paramezvaraH ॥ pragRhya dorbhyAmAzliSya paritaH parayA mudA ॥ 6 ॥
She bowed down to him and did not rise until the Supreme Personality of Godhead remained there. She took him in her arms and hugged him around with great joy.

स्वांके धर्तुं प्रवृत्तो ऽपि सा पर्यंके न्यषीदत ॥ पर्यंकतो बलाद्देवीं सोङ्कमारोप्य सुस्मिताम् ॥ ७ ॥
svAMke dhartuM pravRtto 'pi sA paryaMke nyaSIdata ॥ paryaMkato balAddevIM soGkamAropya susmitAm ॥ 7 ॥
He tried to hold her on his lap, but she sat down on the couch. He forced the goddess onto the couch and placed her on his lap with a beautiful smile.

सस्मितो विवृतैर्नेत्रैस्तद्वक्त्रं प्रपिबन्निव ॥ तया संभाषणायेशः पूर्वभाषितमब्रवीत् ॥ ८ ॥
sasmito vivRtairnetraistadvaktraM prapibanniva ॥ tayA saMbhASaNAyezaH pUrvabhASitamabravIt ॥ 8 ॥
With his eyes wide open, he smiled as if he were drinking from his mouth. To converse with her the lord spoke to her as he had spoken earlier.

देवदेव उवाच ॥ सा दशा च व्यतीता किं तव सर्वांगसुन्दरि ॥ यस्यामनुनयोपायः को ऽपि कोपान्न लभ्यते ॥ ९ ॥
devadeva uvAca ॥ sA dazA ca vyatItA kiM tava sarvAMgasundari ॥ yasyAmanunayopAyaH ko 'pi kopAnna labhyate ॥ 9 ॥
The lord of the gods said:— O lady, exquisitely beautiful in every limb, has that condition of yours passed wherein no means of pacification is fruitful due to your anger?

स्वेच्छयापि न कालीति नान्यवर्णवतीति च ॥ त्वत्स्वभावाहृतं चित्तं सुभ्रु चिंतावहं मम ॥ १० ॥
svecchayApi na kAlIti nAnyavarNavatIti ca ॥ tvatsvabhAvAhRtaM cittaM subhru ciMtAvahaM mama ॥ 10 ॥
Even by her own free will, she was not called Kālī or of any other colour. My mind is carried away by your nature and it is causing me anxiety, O beautiful-eyed one.

विस्मृतः परमो भावः कथं स्वेच्छांगयोगतः ॥ न सम्भवन्ति ये तत्र चित्तकालुष्यहेतवः ॥ ११ ॥
vismRtaH paramo bhAvaH kathaM svecchAMgayogataH ॥ na sambhavanti ye tatra cittakAluSyahetavaH ॥ 11 ॥
How can one forget the supreme state of being by the practice of free will? Those causes of mental corruption are not possible there.

पृथग्जनवदन्योन्यं विप्रियस्यापि कारणम् ॥ आवयोरपि यद्यस्ति नास्त्येवैतच्चराचरम् ॥ १२ ॥
pRthagjanavadanyonyaM vipriyasyApi kAraNam ॥ Avayorapi yadyasti nAstyevaitaccarAcaram ॥ 12 ॥
Should there be any cause for our mutual displeasure as in the case of ignorant fellows, the whole world consisting of the mobile and immobile beings would cease to exist.

अहमग्निशिरोनिष्ठस्त्वं सोमशिरसि स्थिता ॥ अग्नीषोमात्मकं विश्वमावाभ्यां समधिष्ठितम् ॥ १३ ॥
ahamagnizironiSThastvaM somazirasi sthitA ॥ agnISomAtmakaM vizvamAvAbhyAM samadhiSThitam ॥ 13 ॥
I am stationed on the head of Agni. You are stationed on the head of Soma. This universe in the form of “Agnīṣoma” is presided over by us both.

जगद्धिताय चरतोः स्वेच्छाधृतशरीरयोः ॥ आवयोर्विप्रयोगे हि स्यान्निरालम्बनं जगत् ॥ १४ ॥
jagaddhitAya caratoH svecchAdhRtazarIrayoH ॥ Avayorviprayoge hi syAnnirAlambanaM jagat ॥ 14 ॥
We move about for the welfare of the universe. We have taken up physical bodies out of our free will. At our separation the universe is left without support.

अस्ति हेत्वन्तरं चात्र शास्त्रयुक्तिविनिश्चितम् ॥ वागर्थमिव मे वैतज्जगत्स्थावरजंगमम् ॥ १५ ॥
asti hetvantaraM cAtra zAstrayuktivinizcitam ॥ vAgarthamiva me vaitajjagatsthAvarajaMgamam ॥ 15 ॥
There is a difference in cause and effect, as determined by the logic of the scriptures. This world, movable and immovable, is as if it were for the sake of my speech.

त्वं हि वागमृतं साक्षादहमर्थामृतं परम् ॥ द्वयमप्यमृतं कस्माद्वियुक्तमुपपद्यते ॥ १६ ॥
tvaM hi vAgamRtaM sAkSAdahamarthAmRtaM param ॥ dvayamapyamRtaM kasmAdviyuktamupapadyate ॥ 16 ॥
You are the nectar of speech, and I am the nectar of meaning. Why do both appear to be separate from the nectar?

विद्याप्रत्यायिका त्वं मे वेद्यो ऽहं प्रत्ययात्तव ॥ विद्यावेद्यात्मनोरेव विश्लेषः कथमावयोः ॥ १७ ॥
vidyApratyAyikA tvaM me vedyo 'haM pratyayAttava ॥ vidyAvedyAtmanoreva vizleSaH kathamAvayoH ॥ 17 ॥
You are the lore that makes my conviction possible. I am the object of knowledge on the basis of your conviction. How can we separate in asmuch as we are in the forms of knowledge and object of knowledge?

न कर्मणा सृजामीदं जगत्प्रतिसृजामि च ॥ सर्वस्याज्ञैकलभ्यत्वादाज्ञात्वं हि गरीयसी ॥ १८ ॥
na karmaNA sRjAmIdaM jagatpratisRjAmi ca ॥ sarvasyAjJaikalabhyatvAdAjJAtvaM hi garIyasI ॥ 18 ॥
I am not creating and re-creating this universe merely by my activity since everything gets evolved through command or behest. You are the great command.

आज्ञैकसारमैश्वर्यं यस्मात्स्वातंत्र्यलक्षणम् ॥ आज्ञया विप्रयुक्तस्य चैश्वर्यं मम कीदृशम् ॥ १९ ॥
AjJaikasAramaizvaryaM yasmAtsvAtaMtryalakSaNam ॥ AjJayA viprayuktasya caizvaryaM mama kIdRzam ॥ 19 ॥
Lordship has behest as its core because it is the symbol of freedom. How can there be lordship in me if I am deprived of command?

न कदाचिदवस्थानमावयोर्विप्रयुक्तयोः ॥ देवानां कार्यमुद्दिश्य लीलोक्तिं कृतवानहम् ॥ २० ॥
na kadAcidavasthAnamAvayorviprayuktayoH ॥ devAnAM kAryamuddizya lIloktiM kRtavAnaham ॥ 20 ॥
We can never stay apart from each other. It was for accomplishing the task of the gods that I made that joke.

त्वयाप्यविदितं नास्ति कथं कुपितवत्यसि ॥ ततस्त्रिलोकरक्षार्थे कोपो मय्यपि ते कृतः ॥ २१ ॥
tvayApyaviditaM nAsti kathaM kupitavatyasi ॥ tatastrilokarakSArthe kopo mayyapi te kRtaH ॥ 21 ॥
It was not unknown to you that you got angry? It was for the protection of the worlds that you feigned anger towards me.

यदनर्थाय भूतानां न तदस्ति खलु त्वयि ॥ इति प्रियंवदे साक्षादीश्वरे परमेश्वरे ॥ २२ ॥
yadanarthAya bhUtAnAM na tadasti khalu tvayi ॥ iti priyaMvade sAkSAdIzvare paramezvare ॥ 22 ॥
Whatever is not for the benefit of all living beings is certainly not in You. This is the story of Priyanvada, the Supreme Lord, the Supreme Lord Himself.

शृंगारभावसाराणां जन्मभूमिरकृत्रिमा ॥ स्वभर्त्रा ललितन्तथ्यमुक्तं मत्वा स्मितोत्तरम् ॥ २३ ॥
zRMgArabhAvasArANAM janmabhUmirakRtrimA ॥ svabhartrA lalitantathyamuktaM matvA smitottaram ॥ 23 ॥
The birthplace of the essence of beauty and emotion is not artificial. She smiled back, thinking her husband had told her a beautiful fact.

लज्जया न किमप्यूचे कौशिकी वर्णनात्परम् ॥ तदेव वर्णयाम्यद्य शृणु देव्याश्च वर्णनम् ॥ २४ ॥
lajjayA na kimapyUce kauzikI varNanAtparam ॥ tadeva varNayAmyadya zRNu devyAzca varNanam ॥ 24 ॥
Out of shame, Kauśikī did not say anything beyond the description. That is what I shall describe today and listen to the description of the goddess.

देव्युवाच ॥ किं देवेन न सा दृष्टा या सृष्टा कौशिकी मया ॥ तादृशी कन्यका लोके न भूता न भविष्यति ॥ २५ ॥
devyuvAca ॥ kiM devena na sA dRSTA yA sRSTA kauzikI mayA ॥ tAdRzI kanyakA loke na bhUtA na bhaviSyati ॥ 25 ॥
The goddess said:— Was not Kauśiki, created by me seen by my lord? Such a girl has never been before in the world nor will ever be.

तस्या वीर्यं बलं विन्ध्यनिलयं विजयं तथा ॥ शुंभस्य च निशुंभस्य मारणे च रणे तयोः ॥ २६ ॥
tasyA vIryaM balaM vindhyanilayaM vijayaM tathA ॥ zuMbhasya ca nizuMbhasya mAraNe ca raNe tayoH ॥ 26 ॥
Her prowess and strength her abode in the Vindhya and her victory They fought in the battle between Shumbha and Nishumbha.

प्रत्यक्षफलदानं च लोकाय भजते सदा ॥ लोकानां रक्षणं शश्वद्ब्रह्मा विज्ञापयिष्यति ॥ २७ ॥
pratyakSaphaladAnaM ca lokAya bhajate sadA ॥ lokAnAM rakSaNaM zazvadbrahmA vijJApayiSyati ॥ 27 ॥
He always worships the world by giving direct rewards. Brahma will forever announce the protection of the worlds.

इति संभाषमाणाया देव्या एवाज्ञया तदा ॥ व्याघ्रः सख्या समानीय पुरो ऽवस्थापितस्तदा ॥ २८ ॥
iti saMbhASamANAyA devyA evAjJayA tadA ॥ vyAghraH sakhyA samAnIya puro 'vasthApitastadA ॥ 28 ॥
At the behest of the goddess who spoke thus her friends brought the tiger in their presence.

taM prekSyAha punardevI devAnItamupAyatam ॥ vyAghraM pazya na cAnena sadRzo madupAsakaH ॥ 29 ॥
On seeing him the goddess spoke again—“O lord, see this tiger. There is no other devotee of mine like him.

अनेन दुष्टसंघेभ्यो रक्षितं मत्तपोवनम् ॥ अतीव मम भक्तश्च विश्रब्धश्च स्वरक्षणात् ॥ ३० ॥
anena duSTasaMghebhyo rakSitaM mattapovanam ॥ atIva mama bhaktazca vizrabdhazca svarakSaNAt ॥ 30 ॥
This forest of austerities has protected me from the hosts of evildoers He is very devoted and trustworthy to me for his own protection.

स्वदेशं च परित्यज्य प्रसादार्थं समागतः ॥ यदि प्रीतिरभून्मत्तः परां प्रीतिं करोषि मे ॥ ३१ ॥
svadezaM ca parityajya prasAdArthaM samAgataH ॥ yadi prItirabhUnmattaH parAM prItiM karoSi me ॥ 31 ॥
He left his own country and came here to seek mercy If you have been pleased with me you are pleasing me supremely.

नित्यमन्तःपुरद्वारि नियोगान्नन्दिनः स्वयम् ॥ रक्षिभिस्सह तच्चिह्नैर्वर्ततामयमीश्वर ॥ ३२ ॥
nityamantaHpuradvAri niyogAnnandinaH svayam ॥ rakSibhissaha taccihnairvartatAmayamIzvara ॥ 32 ॥
They were always happy to be at the door of the inner palace. O lord may this be with the guards and the signs of that.

वायुरुवाच ॥ मधुरं प्रणयोदर्कं श्रुत्वा देव्याः शुभं वचः ॥ प्रीतो ऽस्मीत्याह तं देवस्स चादृश्यत तत्क्षणात् ॥ ३३ ॥
vAyuruvAca ॥ madhuraM praNayodarkaM zrutvA devyAH zubhaM vacaH ॥ prIto 'smItyAha taM devassa cAdRzyata tatkSaNAt ॥ 33 ॥
Vāyu said:— Hearing the sweet and affectionate words of the goddess I am pleased said to him and the god appeared instantly.

बिभ्रद्वेत्रलतां हैमीं रत्नचित्रं च कंचुकम् ॥ छुरिकामुरगप्रख्यां गणेशो रक्षवेषधृक् ॥ ३४ ॥
bibhradvetralatAM haimIM ratnacitraM ca kaMcukam ॥ churikAmuragaprakhyAM gaNezo rakSaveSadhRk ॥ 34 ॥
He was wearing a golden creeper and a bracelet decorated with gems. Ganesha in the guise of a demon carried a knife resembling a snake.

यस्मात्सोमो महादेवो नन्दी चानेन नन्दितः ॥ सोमनन्दीति विख्यातस्तस्मादेष समाख्यया ॥ ३५ ॥
yasmAtsomo mahAdevo nandI cAnena nanditaH ॥ somanandIti vikhyAtastasmAdeSa samAkhyayA ॥ 35 ॥
He was named Somanandin because Soma means Śiva and this tiger pleased Soma as well as Nandin.

इत्थं देव्याः प्रियं कृत्वा देवश्चर्धेन्दुभूषणः ॥ भूषयामास तन्दिव्यैर्भूषणै रत्नभूषितैः ॥ ३६ ॥
itthaM devyAH priyaM kRtvA devazcardhendubhUSaNaH ॥ bhUSayAmAsa tandivyairbhUSaNai ratnabhUSitaiH ॥ 36 ॥
After carrying out this task pleasing to the goddess the lord with the circular moon on his crest embellished him with divine ornaments set with gems.

ततस्स गौरीं गिरिशो गिरीन्द्रजां सगौरवां सर्वमनोहरां हरः ॥ पर्यंकमारोप्य वरांगभूषणैर्विभूषयामास शशांकभूषणः ॥ ३७ ॥
tatassa gaurIM girizo girIndrajAM sagauravAM sarvamanoharAM haraH ॥ paryaMkamAropya varAMgabhUSaNairvibhUSayAmAsa zazAMkabhUSaNaH ॥ 37 ॥
Then lord Śiva with the moon as his ornament made the majestic beautiful Gaurī the daughter of the lord of Himavat sit on the conch and embellished her with ornaments.
