Vāyu said:— Then circumambulating the lord and restraining the pangs of separation she went to the mountain Himavat.

तपःकृतवती पूर्वं देशे यस्मिन्सखीजनैः ॥ तमेव देशमवृनोत्तपसे प्रणयात्पुनः ॥ २ ॥
tapaHkRtavatI pUrvaM deze yasminsakhIjanaiH ॥ tameva dezamavRnottapase praNayAtpunaH ॥ 2 ॥
Out of love she selected the same spot for her penance where she had formerly performed the same along with her friends.

tataH svapitaraM dRSTvA mAtaraM ca tayorgRhe ॥ praNamya vRttaM vijJApya tAbhyAM cAnumatA satI ॥ 3 ॥
Then he saw his father and mother in their house. The chaste lady bowed down to them and told them what had happened.

पुनस्तपोवनं गत्वा भूषणानि विसृज्य च ॥ स्नात्वा तपस्विनो वेषं कृत्वा परमपावनम् ॥ ४ ॥
punastapovanaM gatvA bhUSaNAni visRjya ca ॥ snAtvA tapasvino veSaM kRtvA paramapAvanam ॥ 4 ॥
After returning to the forest of austerities, she left behind her ornaments. Having bathed he dressed himself in the most holy garb of an ascetic.

Having resolved to perform intense and extremely difficult austerities Always keeping in mind the lotus feet of her husband.

तमेव क्षणिके लिंगे ध्यात्वा बाह्यविधानतः ॥ त्रिसन्ध्यमभ्यर्चयन्ती वन्यैः पुष्पैः फलादिभिः ॥ ६ ॥
tameva kSaNike liMge dhyAtvA bAhyavidhAnataH ॥ trisandhyamabhyarcayantI vanyaiH puSpaiH phalAdibhiH ॥ 6 ॥
One should meditate on Him in His transient form by external means. She worshiped him for three evenings with wild flowers and fruits.

स एव ब्रह्मणो मूर्तिमास्थाय तपसः फलम् ॥ प्रदास्यति ममेत्येवं नित्यं कृत्वा ऽकरोत्तपः ॥ ७ ॥
sa eva brahmaNo mUrtimAsthAya tapasaH phalam ॥ pradAsyati mametyevaM nityaM kRtvA 'karottapaH ॥ 7 ॥
He assumed the form of the Supreme Personality of Godhead and attained the fruits of his austerities. He did this daily and performed austerities thinking that he would give it to me.

तथा तपश्चरन्तीं तां काले बहुतिथे गते ॥ दृष्टः कश्चिन्महाव्याघ्रो दुष्टभावादुपागमत् ॥ ८ ॥
tathA tapazcarantIM tAM kAle bahutithe gate ॥ dRSTaH kazcinmahAvyAghro duSTabhAvAdupAgamat ॥ 8 ॥
After a long time she continued to practice austerities. A great tiger was seen and approached him out of evil intentions.

तथैवोपगतस्यापि तस्यातीवदुरात्मनः ॥ गात्रं चित्रार्पितमिव स्तब्धं तस्यास्सकाशतः ॥ ९ ॥
tathaivopagatasyApi tasyAtIvadurAtmanaH ॥ gAtraM citrArpitamiva stabdhaM tasyAssakAzataH ॥ 9 ॥
The body of that animal of wicked soul became stiff and benumbed when he approached her.

तं दृष्ट्वापि तथा व्याघ्रं दुष्टभावादुपागतम् ॥ न पृथग्जनवद्देवी स्वभावेन विविच्यते ॥ १० ॥
taM dRSTvApi tathA vyAghraM duSTabhAvAdupAgatam ॥ na pRthagjanavaddevI svabhAvena vivicyate ॥ 10 ॥
Even after seeing the tiger that approached her with wicked intention the goddess (devī) did not turn away from her pious thoughts like ordinary people.

स तु विष्टब्धसर्वांगो बुभुक्षापरिपीडितः ॥ ममामिषं ततो नान्यदिति मत्वा निरन्तरम् ॥ ११ ॥
sa tu viSTabdhasarvAMgo bubhukSAparipIDitaH ॥ mamAmiSaM tato nAnyaditi matvA nirantaram ॥ 11 ॥
Tormented by hunger he stood there all over I constantly thought that it was my meat and nothing else.

निरीक्ष्यमाणः सततं देवीमेव तदा ऽनिशम् ॥ अतिष्ठदग्रतस्तस्या उपासनमिवाचरत् ॥ १२ ॥
nirIkSyamANaH satataM devImeva tadA 'nizam ॥ atiSThadagratastasyA upAsanamivAcarat ॥ 12 ॥
Then he constantly looked at the goddess He stood in front of her as if worshiping her.

देव्याश्च हृदये नित्यं ममैवायमुपासकः ॥ त्राता च दुष्टसत्त्वेभ्य इति प्रववृते कृपा ॥ १३ ॥
devyAzca hRdaye nityaM mamaivAyamupAsakaH ॥ trAtA ca duSTasattvebhya iti pravavRte kRpA ॥ 13 ॥
Mercy was generated in the heart of the goddess who thought, “He is the perpetual performer of contemplation on me and my protector from the wicked animals.”

तस्या एव कृपा योगात्सद्योनष्टमलत्रयः ॥ बभूव सहसा व्याघ्रो देवीं च बुबुधे तदा ॥ १४ ॥
tasyA eva kRpA yogAtsadyonaSTamalatrayaH ॥ babhUva sahasA vyAghro devIM ca bubudhe tadA ॥ 14 ॥
By this feeling of mercy the threefold dirt of the tiger perished and he realised the goddess.

न्यवर्तत बुभुक्षा च तस्यांगस्तम्भनं तथा ॥ दौरात्म्यं जन्मसिद्धं च तृप्तिश्च समजायत ॥ १५ ॥
nyavartata bubhukSA ca tasyAMgastambhanaM tathA ॥ daurAtmyaM janmasiddhaM ca tRptizca samajAyata ॥ 15 ॥
His hunger receded. The benumbed stiffness subsided. His congenital wickedness disappeared. Contentment set in.

तदा परमभावेन ज्ञात्वा कार्तार्थ्यमात्मनः ॥ सद्योपासक एवैष सिषेवे परमेश्वरीम् ॥ १६ ॥
tadA paramabhAvena jJAtvA kArtArthyamAtmanaH ॥ sadyopAsaka evaiSa siSeve paramezvarIm ॥ 16 ॥
Realising his contentment with great piety he waited upon the goddess as a sudden devotee.

दुष्टानामपि सत्त्वानां तथान्येषान्दुरात्मनाम् ॥ स एव द्रावको भूत्वा विचचार तपोवने ॥ १७ ॥
duSTAnAmapi sattvAnAM tathAnyeSAndurAtmanAm ॥ sa eva drAvako bhUtvA vicacAra tapovane ॥ 17 ॥
He roamed about the penance-grove as a router of wicked animals and wicked souls.

तपश्च ववृधे देव्यास्तीव्रं तीव्रतरात्मकम् ॥ देवाश्च दैत्यनिर्बन्धाद्ब्रह्माणं शरणं गताः ॥ १८ ॥
tapazca vavRdhe devyAstIvraM tIvratarAtmakam ॥ devAzca daityanirbandhAdbrahmANaM zaraNaM gatAH ॥ 18 ॥
The penance of the goddess increased and became gradually acute. Meanwhile the gods sought refuge in Brahma due to the pressure of the Daityas.

चक्रुर्निवेदनं देवाः स्वदुःखस्यारिपीडनात् ॥ यथा च ददतुः शुम्भनिशुम्भौ वरसम्मदात् ॥ १९ ॥
cakrurnivedanaM devAH svaduHkhasyAripIDanAt ॥ yathA ca dadatuH zumbhanizumbhau varasammadAt ॥ 19 ॥
The gods submitted to him how Śumbha and Niśumbha inflicted pain on them due to their strength derived from the boons.

सो ऽपि श्रुत्वा विधिर्दुःखं सुराणां कृपयान्वितः ॥ आसीद्दैत्यवधायैव स्मृत्वा हेत्वाश्रयां कथाम् ॥ २० ॥
so 'pi zrutvA vidhirduHkhaM surANAM kRpayAnvitaH ॥ AsIddaityavadhAyaiva smRtvA hetvAzrayAM kathAm ॥ 20 ॥
When Vidhi heard the distress of the demigods he was filled with compassion He remembered the story of the cause and effect of killing the demon.

सामरः प्रार्थितो ब्रह्मा ययौ देव्यास्तपोवनम् ॥ संस्मरन्मनसा देवदुःखमोक्षं स्वयत्नतः ॥ २१ ॥
sAmaraH prArthito brahmA yayau devyAstapovanam ॥ saMsmaranmanasA devaduHkhamokSaM svayatnataH ॥ 21 ॥
Requested by Sāmara, Lord Brahmā went to the forest of austerities of the goddess. Remembering in his mind the liberation from the sufferings of the gods with great effort.

ददर्श च सुरश्रेष्ठः श्रेष्ठे तपसि निष्ठिताम् ॥ प्रतिष्ठामिव विश्वस्य भवानीं परमेश्वरीम् ॥ २२ ॥
dadarza ca surazreSThaH zreSThe tapasi niSThitAm ॥ pratiSThAmiva vizvasya bhavAnIM paramezvarIm ॥ 22 ॥
The best of the demigods saw her engaged in excellent austerities She is the goddess of fortune and the goddess of fortune as the foundation of the universe.

ननाम चास्य जगतो मातरं स्वस्य वै हरेः ॥ रुद्रस्य च पितुर्भार्यामार्यामद्रीश्वरात्मजाम् ॥ २३ ॥
nanAma cAsya jagato mAtaraM svasya vai hareH ॥ rudrasya ca piturbhAryAmAryAmadrIzvarAtmajAm ॥ 23 ॥
He bowed down to the mother of the universe, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He also married the noble wife of his father Rudra and the daughter of the lord of the mountains.

ब्रह्माणमागतं दृष्ट्वा देवी देवगणैः सह ॥ अर्घ्यं तदर्हं दत्त्वा ऽस्मै स्वागताद्यैरुपाचरत् ॥ २४ ॥
brahmANamAgataM dRSTvA devI devagaNaiH saha ॥ arghyaM tadarhaM dattvA 'smai svAgatAdyairupAcarat ॥ 24 ॥
Seeing Lord Brahma arrive the goddess along with hosts of demigods She offered him the arghya he deserved and treated him with welcome and other rituals.

तां च प्रत्युपचारोक्तिं पुरस्कृत्याभिनंद्य च ॥ पप्रच्छ तपसो हेतुमजानन्निव पद्मजः ॥ २५ ॥
tAM ca pratyupacAroktiM puraskRtyAbhinaMdya ca ॥ papraccha tapaso hetumajAnanniva padmajaH ॥ 25 ॥
He greeted her in front of her and greeted her in reply. Padmaja as if not knowing the reason for his austerities inquired.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ तीव्रेण तपसानेन देव्या किमिह साध्यते ॥ तपःफलानां सर्वेषां त्वदधीना हि सिद्धयः ॥ २६ ॥
brahmovAca ॥ tIvreNa tapasAnena devyA kimiha sAdhyate ॥ tapaHphalAnAM sarveSAM tvadadhInA hi siddhayaH ॥ 26 ॥
Brahmā said:— What is being striven for, O goddess, by means of this penance? The benefits of penances are under your control.

यश्चैव जगतां भर्ता तमेव परमेश्वरम् ॥ भर्तारमात्मना प्राप्य प्राप्तञ्च तपसः फलम् ॥ २७ ॥
yazcaiva jagatAM bhartA tameva paramezvaram ॥ bhartAramAtmanA prApya prAptaJca tapasaH phalam ॥ 27 ॥
The fruit of the penance has been obtained by you in having obtained lord Śiva as your husband, who alone is the lord of all worlds.

अथवा सर्वमेवैतत्क्रीडाविलसितं तव ॥ इदन्तु चित्रं देवस्य विरहं सहसे कथम् ॥ २८ ॥
athavA sarvamevaitatkrIDAvilasitaM tava ॥ idantu citraM devasya virahaM sahase katham ॥ 28 ॥
Or all this is only a form of your divine sport. But this is surprising how you can bear separation from the lord.

देव्युवाच ॥ सर्गादौ भवतो देवादुत्पत्तिः श्रूयते यदा ॥ तदा प्रजानां प्रथमस्त्वं मे प्रथमजः सुतः ॥ २९ ॥
devyuvAca ॥ sargAdau bhavato devAdutpattiH zrUyate yadA ॥ tadA prajAnAM prathamastvaM me prathamajaH sutaH ॥ 29 ॥
The Goddess (devī) said:— When at the beginning of creation as mentioned in the Vedas you are born of lord Śiva you are the first of my creation, my first-born son.

यदा पुनः प्रजावृद्ध्यै ललाटाद्भवतो भवः ॥ उत्पन्नो ऽभूत्तदा त्वं मे गुरुः श्वशुरभावतः ॥ ३० ॥
yadA punaH prajAvRddhyai lalATAdbhavato bhavaH ॥ utpanno 'bhUttadA tvaM me guruH zvazurabhAvataH ॥ 30 ॥
When for multiplying the subjects, Śiva was born of your forehead you became my father-in-law and so elder to me.

यदा भवद्गिरीन्द्रस्ते पुत्रो मम पिता स्वयम् ॥ तदा पितामहस्त्वं मे जातो लोकपितामह ॥ ३१ ॥
yadA bhavadgirIndraste putro mama pitA svayam ॥ tadA pitAmahastvaM me jAto lokapitAmaha ॥ 31 ॥
When the lord of mountains, my father became your son you became my grandfather, O grandfather of the worlds!

tadIdRzasya bhavato lokayAtrAvidhAyinaH ॥ vRttavantaHpure bhartA kathayiSye kathaM punaH ॥ 32 ॥
How can I inform you, the arranger of worldly existence what happened at the harem with my husband?

kimatra bahunA dehe yazcAyaM mama kAlimA ॥ tyaktvA sattvavidhAnena gaurI bhavitumutsahe ॥ 33 ॥
Of what avail is this talk? I wish to get rid of my dark complexion through legitimate remedies and obtain white colour.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ एतावता किमर्थेन तीव्रं देवि तपः कृतम् ॥ स्वेच्छैव किमपर्याप्ता क्रीडेयं हि तवेदृशी ॥ ३४ ॥
brahmovAca ॥ etAvatA kimarthena tIvraM devi tapaH kRtam ॥ svecchaiva kimaparyAptA krIDeyaM hi tavedRzI ॥ 34 ॥
Brahmā said:— O goddess, why did you perform a severe penance for this purpose? Was not your wish alone sufficient for that? Indeed this is only your sport.

क्रीडा ऽपि च जगन्मातस्तव लोकहिताय वै ॥ अतो ममेष्टमनया फलं किमपि साध्यताम् ॥ ३५ ॥
krIDA 'pi ca jaganmAtastava lokahitAya vai ॥ ato mameSTamanayA phalaM kimapi sAdhyatAm ॥ 35 ॥
O mother of the universe, your play too benefits the worlds. Hence some benefit pleasing to me may be sought through it.

निशुंभशुंभनामानौ दैत्यौ दत्तवरौ मया ॥ दृप्तौ देवान्प्रबाधेते त्वत्तो लब्धस्तयोर्वधः ॥ ३६ ॥
nizuMbhazuMbhanAmAnau daityau dattavarau mayA ॥ dRptau devAnprabAdhete tvatto labdhastayorvadhaH ॥ 36 ॥
Two Daityas, Śumbha and Niśumbha to whom I had granted boons have turned arrogant. They are harassing the gods. Their destruction is only through you.

अलं विलंबनेनात्र त्वं क्षणेन स्थिरा भव ॥ शक्तिर्विसृज्यमाना ऽद्य तयोर्मृत्युर्भविष्यति ॥ ३७ ॥
alaM vilaMbanenAtra tvaM kSaNena sthirA bhava ॥ zaktirvisRjyamAnA 'dya tayormRtyurbhaviSyati ॥ 37 ॥
Do not delay. For a short while be steady. The Śakti that is to be released now shall be their death.

ब्राह्मणाभ्यर्थिता चैव देवी गिरिवरात्मजा ॥ त्वक्कोशं सहसोत्सृज्य गौरी सा समजायत ॥ ३८ ॥
brAhmaNAbhyarthitA caiva devI girivarAtmajA ॥ tvakkozaM sahasotsRjya gaurI sA samajAyata ॥ 38 ॥
Thus requested by Brahmā, the goddess, daughter of the mountain, cast off her outer skin and became white.

सा त्वक्कोशात्मनोत्सृष्टा कौशिकी नाम नामतः ॥ काली कालाम्बुदप्रख्या कन्यका समपद्यत ॥ ३९ ॥
sA tvakkozAtmanotsRSTA kauzikI nAma nAmataH ॥ kAlI kAlAmbudaprakhyA kanyakA samapadyata ॥ 39 ॥
The outer sheath thus cast off became Kauśikī who is known as Kālī, the virgin with the lustre of’ the black cloud.

सा तु मायात्मिका शक्तिर्योगनिद्रा च वैष्णवी ॥ शंखचक्रत्रिशूलादिसायुधाष्टमहाभुजा ॥ ४० ॥
sA tu mAyAtmikA zaktiryoganidrA ca vaiSNavI ॥ zaMkhacakratrizUlAdisAyudhASTamahAbhujA ॥ 40 ॥
She is the Śakti in the form of Māyā, the Yogic slumber of Viṣṇu. She held the weapons, conch, discus, trident in her eight great arms.

सौम्या घोरा च मिश्रा च त्रिनेत्रा चन्द्रशेखरा ॥ अजातपुंस्पर्शरतिरधृष्या चातिसुन्दरी ॥ ४१ ॥
saumyA ghorA ca mizrA ca trinetrA candrazekharA ॥ ajAtapuMsparzaratiradhRSyA cAtisundarI ॥ 41 ॥
She had three traits: gentle, terrible and a mixture of the two. She had three eyes. She was moon-crested. She had not experienced the sexual contact of any man. She was invincible and beautiful.

dattA ca brahmaNe devyA zaktireSA sanAtanI ॥ nizuMbhasya ca zuMbhasya nihaMtrI daityasiMhayoH ॥ 42 ॥
This eternal Śakti was given to Brahmā by the goddess (devī) as the would-be destroyer of Śumbha and Niśumbha, the leonine Daityas.

brahmaNApi prahRSTena tasyai paramazaktaye ॥ prabalaH kesarI datto vAhanatve samAgataH ॥ 43 ॥
A very powerful lion that came there, was given to her as vehicle by the delighted Brahmā.

vindhye ca vasatiM tasyAH pUjAmAsavapUrvakaiH ॥ mAMsairmatsyairapUpaizca nirvartyAsau samAdizat ॥ 44 ॥
He fixed her abode on the Vindhya mountain. He ordained her worship by the gift of meat, fish, pies and wine.

sA caiva saMmatA zaktirbrahmaNo vizvakarmaNaH ॥ praNamya mAtaraM gaurIM brahmANaM cAnupUrvazaH ॥ 45 ॥
That is the approved energy of Lord Viśvakarmā, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He bowed down to his mother Gauri and Brahma one after the other.

zaktibhizcApi tulyAbhiH svAtmajAbhiranekazaH ॥ parItA prayayau vindhyaM daityendrau hantumudyatA ॥ 46 ॥
He also endowed his own sons with equal powers in many ways. Surrounded by her she set out for Vindhya ready to kill the two chiefs of the demons.

There she killed the two chiefs of the demons in battle The arrows of that demon and the arrows of lust pierced their bodies and minds.
