At that time a chariot resembling a thousand suns and with the emblem of a bull on the banner cloth appeared in the sky.

The splendid chariot had two horses and four wheels. Several divine weapons and missiles had been kept ready therein. It was embellished with jewels.

tasyApi rathavaryasya syAtsa eva hi sArathiH ॥ yathA ca traipure yuddhe pUrvaM zArvarathe sthitaH ॥ 3 ॥
It was driven by the same charioteer who drove Śiva’s chariot in the latter’s war with the Tripuras.

sa taM rathavaraM brahmA zAsanAdeva zUlinaH ॥ haressamIpamAnIya kRtAJjalirabhASata ॥ 4 ॥
At the bidding of Śiva, Brahmā brought the excellent chariot to Vīrabhadra and spoke with palms joined in reverence.

O lord Vīrabhadra the eternal moon-crested lord commands you to mount the chariot.

O great-armed one, Śiva, stationed near the hermitage of Raibhya along with Śivā, is witnessing your unbearable exploit.

On hearing his words and Blessing Brahmā, the heroic leading Gaṇa mounted the divine chariot.

tathA rathavare tasminsthite brahmaNi sArathau ॥ bhadrasya vavRdhe lakSmI rudrasyeva puradviSaH ॥ 8 ॥
In the excellent chariot where Brahmā sat as the charioteer the splendour of Bhadra increased like that of Rudra, the enemy of the Tripuras.

tataH zaMkhavaraM dIptaM pUrNacaMdrasamaprabham ॥ pradadhmau vadane kRtvA bhAnukaMpo mahAbalaH ॥ 9 ॥
Then keeping an excellent conch shining like the full moon, in his mouth, the powerful Bhānukampa blew on it.

At the sound of the conch resembling that of the swan, the fire in the belly of the gods blazed with fear.

yakSavidyAdharAhIndraiH siddhairyuddhadidRkSubhiH ॥ kSaNena nibaDIbhUtAH sAkAzavivarA dizAH ॥ 11 ॥
In an instant the quarters including open spaces and crevices were filled up and thronged with leading Yakṣas Vidyādharas, serpents and Siddhas who desired to witness the battle.

Then Nārāyaṇa as the cloud inflicted pain on the Gaṇas as the cattle, through a great shower of arrows from his bow.

On seeing Viṣṇu coming and discharging arrows Bhadra took up his bow and showered thousands of arrows.

He took up the divine bow and slowly drew it like Śiva who drew the bow Meru.

As the bow was drawn a loud report was produced shaking the earth.

Then the chief of Gaṇas, of fierce valour and glory took an excellent arrow blazing like a serpent.

bANoddhAre bhujo hyasya tUNIvadanasaMgataH ॥ pratyadRzyata valmIkaM vivekSuriva pannagaH ॥ 17 ॥
His hand in contact with the opening of the quiver for taking up the arrows appeared like a serpent wishing to enter an anthill.

samuddhRtaH kare tasya tatkSaNaM ruruce zareH ॥ mahAbhujaMgasaMdaSTo yathA bAlabhujaGgamaH ॥ 18 ॥
The arrow lifted and held in the hand shone like the young one of a serpent held within the mouth of a great serpent.

With his stout and sharp arrow, the infuriated Bhadra who resembled Rudra, hit the unchanging Viṣṇu on his forehead.

ललाटे ऽभिहितो विष्णुः पूर्वमेवावमानितः ॥ चुकोप गणपेंद्राय मृगेंद्रायेव गोवृषः ॥ २० ॥
lalATe 'bhihito viSNuH pUrvamevAvamAnitaH ॥ cukopa gaNapeMdrAya mRgeMdrAyeva govRSaH ॥ 20 ॥
Viṣṇu thus insulted and hit on the forehead became angry with the chief of Gaṇas like a cow or bull becoming angry with the lion.

ततस्त्वशनिकल्पेन क्रूरास्येन महेषुणा ॥ विव्याध गणराजस्य भुजे भुजगसन्निभे ॥ २१ ॥
tatastvazanikalpena krUrAsyena maheSuNA ॥ vivyAdha gaNarAjasya bhuje bhujagasannibhe ॥ 21 ॥
Then he hit the serpent like arm of the chief of Gaṇas, with a cruel, pointed great arrow resembling the thunderbolt.

so 'pi tasya bhuje bhUyaH sUryAyutasamaprabham ॥ visasarja zaraM vegAdvIrabhadro mahAbalaH ॥ 22 ॥
The powerful Vīrabhadra too, with a great velocity discharged an arrow brilliant like ten thousand suns again at his arm.

स च विष्णुः पुनर्भद्रं भद्रो विष्णुं तथा पुनः ॥ स च तं स च तं विप्राश्शरैस्तावनुजघ्नतुः ॥ २३ ॥
sa ca viSNuH punarbhadraM bhadro viSNuM tathA punaH ॥ sa ca taM sa ca taM viprAzzaraistAvanujaghnatuH ॥ 23 ॥
Viṣṇu hit Bhadra. Bhadra hit Viṣṇu. O brahmins both of them hit each other.

tayoH parasparaM vegAccharAnAzu vimuMcatoH ॥ dvayossamabhavadyuddhaM tumulaM romaharSaNam ॥ 24 ॥
The tumultuous hair-raising fight between the two discharging the arrows on each other in quick succession then ensued.

On seeing their mutual noisy battle the sounds of “Hā-Hā” raised by the aerial wanderers rose in the sky.

ततस्त्वनलतुंडेन शरेणादित्यवर्चसा ॥ विव्याध सुदृढं भद्रो विष्णोर्महति वक्षसि ॥ २६ ॥

Then Bhadra hit in the broad chest of Viṣṇu with an arrow that shone like the sun and the tip of which blazed like fire.

Acutely hit by the arrow that fell sharply, Viṣṇu suffered great pain and fell into swoon.

punaH kSaNAdivotthAya labdhasaMjJastadA hariH ॥ sarvANyapi ca divyAstrANyathainaM pratyavAsRjat ॥ 28 ॥
He regained consciousness instantaneously and got up. He discharged his weapons against Bhadra.

sa ca viSNurdhanurmuktAnsarvAJcharvacamUpatiH ॥ sahasA vArayAmAsa ghoraiH pratizaraiH zarAn ॥ 29 ॥
The chief of the army of Śiva stopped all the missiles discharged from Viṣṇu’s bow by means of terrible anti-missiles.

ततो विष्णुस्स्वनामांकं बाणमव्याहतं क्वचित् ॥ ससर्ज क्रोधरक्ता क्षस्तमुद्दिश्य गणेश्वरम् ॥ तं बाणं बाणवर्येण भद्रो भद्राह्वयेण तु ॥ ३० ॥
tato viSNussvanAmAMkaM bANamavyAhataM kvacit ॥ sasarja krodharaktA kSastamuddizya gaNezvaram ॥ taM bANaM bANavaryeNa bhadro bhadrAhvayeNa tu ॥ 30 ॥
Then Viṣṇu with eyes reddened by anger discharged an arrow in which his name had been engraved and which had never been obstructed anywhere, against the Gaṇa chief. Showering arrows, lord Bhadra split the arrow into pieces on the way before it reached him.

अप्राप्तमेव भगवाञ्चिच्छेद शतधा पथि ॥ अथैकेनेषुणा शार्ङ्गं द्वाभ्यां पक्षौ गरुत्मतः ॥ ३१ ॥
aprAptameva bhagavAJciccheda zatadhA pathi ॥ athaikeneSuNA zArGgaM dvAbhyAM pakSau garutmataH ॥ 31 ॥
When the Lord did not reach him, He cut him into a hundred pieces on the way. Then with one arrow he struck Śārṅga with two wings of Garuda.

निमेषादेव चिच्छेद तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥ ततो योगबलाद्विष्णुर्देहाद्देवान्सुदारुणान् ॥ ३२ ॥
nimeSAdeva ciccheda tadadbhutamivAbhavat ॥ tato yogabalAdviSNurdehAddevAnsudAruNAn ॥ 32 ॥
In a moment he cut it to pieces, and it seemed as if it were a wonderful thing. Then by the power of yoga Lord Visnu removed the terrible devas from his body.

शंखचक्रगदाहस्तान् विससर्ज सहस्रशः ॥ सर्वांस्तान्क्षणमात्रेण त्रैपुरानिव शंकरः ॥ ३३ ॥
zaMkhacakragadAhastAn visasarja sahasrazaH ॥ sarvAMstAnkSaNamAtreNa traipurAniva zaMkaraH ॥ 33 ॥
He threw out thousands of conchshells, discs and clubs in his hands. In an instant Lord Śiva destroyed all of them like the three cities.

निर्ददाह महाबाहुर्नेत्रसृष्टेन वह्निना ॥ ततः क्रुद्धतरो विष्णुश्चक्रमुद्यम्य सत्वरः ॥ ३४ ॥
nirdadAha mahAbAhurnetrasRSTena vahninA ॥ tataH kruddhataro viSNuzcakramudyamya satvaraH ॥ 34 ॥
The mighty-armed Lord was burnt to ashes by the fire emanating from His eyes. Then Lord Visnu, more enraged, quickly raised his wheel.

At that moment the heroic King prepared to throw himself into the water. Seeing him standing in front of him he raised his wheel.

Lord Ganesha seemed to smile and tried to dispel fear. That wheel with its limbs stunned was terrible and unparalleled anywhere.

इच्छन्नपि समुत्स्रष्टुं न विष्णुरभवत्क्षमः ॥ श्वसन्निवैकमुद्धृत्य बाहुं चक्रसमन्वितम् ॥ ३७ ॥
icchannapi samutsraSTuM na viSNurabhavatkSamaH ॥ zvasannivaikamuddhRtya bAhuM cakrasamanvitam ॥ 37 ॥
Although Lord Viṣṇu desired to release Him, He was unable to do so. Breathing heavily he lifted one of his arms attached to the wheel.

He remained lazy and motionless like a stone He was as disembodied as a living being or as a bull without horns.

vidaMSTrazca yathA siMhastathA viSNuravasthitaH ॥ taM dRSTvA durdazApannaM viSNumiMdrAdayaH surAH ॥ samunnaddhA gaNendreNa mRgeMdreNeva govRSAH ॥ 39 ॥
Lord Viṣṇu stood there like a lion with fangs Lord Viṣṇu, Indra and other demigods saw him in a miserable condition. They were raised by the king of the hosts like bulls raised by a lion.

प्रगृहीतायुधा यौद्धुंक्रुद्धाः समुपतस्थिरे ॥ तान्दृष्ट्वा समरे भद्रःक्षुद्रानिव हरिर्मृगान् ॥ ४० ॥
pragRhItAyudhA yauddhuMkruddhAH samupatasthire ॥ tAndRSTvA samare bhadraHkSudrAniva harirmRgAn ॥ 40 ॥
They took up their weapons and angrily stood up to fight. Seeing them in battle the gentle monkey looked like insignificant deer.

sAkSAdrudratanurvIro varavIragaNAvRtaH ॥ aTTahAsena ghoreNa vyaSTaM bhayadaniMditaH ॥ 41 ॥
He was a hero in the form of Lord Śiva and was surrounded by hosts of excellent heroes. He was irreproachably overwhelmed with fear with a terrible loud laugh.

Frightened by the splendour of Vīrabhadra they could not stay further in the battle. In that fierce battle they fled even with their benumbed limbs.

The mighty Vīrabhadra hit the fleeing warriors, with sharp arrows like the cloud hitting the mountains with sharp showers.

Just as the sun covers the earth by his rays so the hero enveloped the quarters by means of his arrows.

The great arrows took away the lives of the gods even as the water snakes squeeze the lives out of the frogs. They drank their blood as though that were wine.

The hands of some had been cut off. The faces of some had been split. Some gods fell on the ground with their sides lacerated and bruised.

Many of his limbs were shattered by arrows and his joints were severed. Some of them fell to the ground dead with their eyes turned away. They wanted to enter the earth as if they wanted to go to the sky.

Unable to restrain themselves, they merged into each other. Some entered the ground while others entered the caves of the mountains.

Some of them went to the sky, while others entered the water. Thus the heroic demon shone with all his limbs cut off.

The subjects were overwhelmed, and the Supreme Personality of Godhead appeared as fearful. It was as if the enemy of Tripura had burnt down the army of Tripura.

Thus the entire army of the demigods looked wretched and frightening. He assumed the wretched body born of the lord of the hosts.

At that time the army of blood and water flowed from the heroes of the demigods. A terrible river flowed bringing fear to all living beings.

The ground of the sacrifice then became drenched in blood. Kaisiki, dressed in red and wet clothes, looked like a dead Shumbha.

aprasannA dizaH sarvAH pavanazcAzivo vavau ॥ aho vidhiviparyAsastvazvamedhoyamadhvaraH ॥ yajamAnassvayaM dakSau brahmaputraprajApatiH ॥ 62 ॥
All directions were unhappy and the wind blew auspiciously Alas, this sacrifice is contrary to the prescribed rituals. The sacrificer himself was Daksha the son of Brahma and the creator.

Dharma and others and their members were protected by the banner of Garuda The gods, such as Indra, directly receive their shares.

Nevertheless, the priests were present with the performer of the sacrifice. The head is immediately cut off and the results are good.

Hence no such action shall be performed that is not indicated in the Vedas, and that which excludes Śiva and is taken up by the wicked.

A person devoid of devotion to Śiva docs not attain the fruit of any rite even though he may perform holy rites and sacrifices.

कृत्वापि सुमहत्पापं भक्त्या यजति यश्शिवम् ॥ मुच्यते पातकैः सर्वैर्नात्र कार्या विचारणा ॥ ६७ ॥
kRtvApi sumahatpApaM bhaktyA yajati yazzivam ॥ mucyate pAtakaiH sarvairnAtra kAryA vicAraNA ॥ 67 ॥
Even after committing great sin, if any one worships Śiva with devotion he is liberated from the sin. No hesitation need be made in this respect.

bahunAtra kimuktena vRthA dAnaM vRthA tapaH ॥ vRthA yajJo vRthA homaH zivanindAratasya tu ॥ 68 ॥
Of what avail is much talk? If any one censures Śiva, the charitable gifts he makes, the penance, the sacrifice, the homa, everything goes in vain.

tataH sanArAyaNakAssarudrAH salokapAlAssamare suraughAH ॥ gaNeMdracApacyutabANaviddhAH pradudruvurgADharujAbhibhUtAH ॥ 69 ॥
Then the gods including Viṣṇu and the guardians of the quarters pierced by the arrows discharged from the bow of the chief of Gaṇas and overwhelmed by great pain fled from the battle.

The warriors of the gods with their hair dishevelled moved about. Some sat exhausted with their huge bodies. Some fell with their faces cut and some perished.

kecicca tatra tridazA vipannA visrastavastrAbharaNAstrazastrAH ॥ nipeturudbhAsitadInamudrA madaM ca darpaM ca balaM ca hitvA ॥ 71 ॥
Some fell in adversity with their garments, ornaments, weapons and missiles scattered. Eschewing their pride, arrogance and strength they fell evincing signs of dejection.

sasmutpathaprasthitamapradhRSyo vikSipya dakSAdhvaramakSatAstraiH ॥ babhau gaNezassa gaNezvarANAM madhye sthitaH siMha ivarSabhANAm ॥ 72 ॥
Destroying Dakṣa’s sacrifice, performed in the wrong way, by means of weapons the invincible lord of Gaṇas shone amidst the leading Gaṇas like the lion in the midst of bulls.
