vAyuruvAca ॥ tato viSNupradhAnAnAM surANAmamitaujasAm ॥ dadarza ca mahatsatraM citradhvajaparicchadam ॥ 1 ॥
Vāyu said:— Then he saw the great Satra of the gods of great splendour the chief of whom was Viṣṇu. The satra had all the paraphernalia—the flags of various colours etc.

sudarbhaRtusaMstIrNaM susamiddhahutAzanam ॥ kAMcanairyajJabhAMDaizca bhrAjiSNubhiralaMkRtam ॥ 2 ॥
Good grass was scattered in straight lines. The sacrificial fire was well-kindled. It was embellished with glittering sacrificial vessels of gold.

RSibhiryajJapaTubhiryathAvatkarmakartRbhiH ॥ vidhinA vedadRSTena svanuSThitabahukramam ॥ 3 ॥
The rites were performed neatly in accordance with the rules found in the Vedas by the sages who were experts in sacrifices and who performed the rites properly.

devAMganAsahasrADhyamapsarogaNasevitam ॥ veNuvINAravairjuSTaM vedaghoSaizca bRMhitam ॥ 4 ॥
Thousands of celestial damsels were there. The Satra was attended by the Apsaras. The sweet sound of flutes and lutes spread and was enhanced by the sound of Vedic hymns.

dRSTvA dakSAdhvare vIro vIrabhadraH pratApavAn ॥ siMhanAdaM tadA cakre gaMbhIro jalado yathA ॥ 5 ॥
On seeing all this, the heroic Vīrabhadra of great exploits roared like a lion or a majestic rumbling cloud.

tataH kilakilAzabda AkAzaM pUrayanniva ॥ gaNezvaraiH kRto jajJe mahAnnyakkRtasAgaraH ॥ 6 ॥
Then a hurrah of joy, filling the sky and superseding the sound of the ocean was produced by the lords of gaṇas.

Overwhelmed by the great sound the frightened heaven-dwellers ran helter-skelter dropping their garments and ornaments.

kiMsvidbhagno mahAmeruH kiMsvitsaMdIryate mahI ॥ kimidaM kimidaM veti jajalpustridazA bhRzam ॥ 8 ॥
“Has the great Meru been burst? Is the earth pierced through? What is this?” the gods, began to scream and shout.

mRgendrANAM yathA nAdaM gajeMdrA gahane vane ॥ zrutvA tathAvidhaM kecittatyajurjIvitaM bhayAt ॥ 9 ॥
Some abandoned their lives due to fear like lordly elephants in a thick forest on hearing the roar of the lion.

Mountains crumbled. The earth quaked. Winds rolled and reeled. The ocean was agitated.

agnayo naiva dIpyaMte na ca dIpyati bhAskaraH ॥ grahAzca na prakAzaMte nakSatrANi ca tArakAH ॥ 11 ॥
Fires did not blaze. The sun did not shine. Neither the planets nor the stars nor the other luminary bodies shone.

etasminneva kAle tu yajJavATaM tadujjvalam ॥ saMprApa bhagavAnbhadro bhadraizca saha bhadrayA ॥ 12 ॥
In the meantime lord Bhadra in the company of Bhadras and the goddess Bhadrā reached the brilliant sacrificial altar.

taM dRSTvA bhItabhIto 'pi dakSo dRDha iva sthitaH ॥ kruddhavadvacanaM prAha ko bhavAn kimihecchasi ॥ 13 ॥
On seeing him, Dakṣa stood steady and firm though he was frightened. He spoke angrily “Who are you? What do you wish?”

tasya tadvacanaM zrutvA dakSasya ca durAtmanaH ॥ vIrabhadro mahAtejA meghasaMbhIranissvanaH ॥ 14 ॥
Hearing the words of the wicked Daksha Veerabhadra was very effulgent and roared like a cloud.

स्मयन्निव तमालोक्य दक्षं देवाश्च ऋत्विजः ॥ अर्थगर्भमसंभ्रान्तमवोचदुचितं वचः ॥ १५ ॥
smayanniva tamAlokya dakSaM devAzca RtvijaH ॥ arthagarbhamasaMbhrAntamavocaducitaM vacaH ॥ 15 ॥
The devatas and priests looked at Dakṣa as if smiling He spoke appropriate words to him who was not confused by the meaning.

वीरभद्र उवाच ॥ वयं ह्यनुचराः सर्वे शर्वस्यामिततेजसः ॥ भागाभिलिप्सया प्राप्ता भागो नस्संप्रदीयताम् ॥ १६ ॥
vIrabhadra uvAca ॥ vayaM hyanucarAH sarve zarvasyAmitatejasaH ॥ bhAgAbhilipsayA prAptA bhAgo nassaMpradIyatAm ॥ 16 ॥
Vīrabhadra said:— We are the followers of lord Śiva of great splendour. We have come for our share. May that be given to us.

अथ चेदध्वरे ऽस्माकं न भागः परिकल्पितः ॥ कथ्यतां कारणं तत्र युध्यतां वा मयामरैः ॥ १७ ॥
atha cedadhvare 'smAkaM na bhAgaH parikalpitaH ॥ kathyatAM kAraNaM tatra yudhyatAM vA mayAmaraiH ॥ 17 ॥
If the share has not been allotted to us in the sacrifice let the reason be mentioned or let the gods fight with me.

इत्युक्तास्ते गणेंद्रेण देवा दक्षपुरोगमाः ॥ ऊचुर्मन्त्राः प्रमाणं नो न वयं प्रभवस्त्विति ॥ १८ ॥
ityuktAste gaNeMdreNa devA dakSapurogamAH ॥ UcurmantrAH pramANaM no na vayaM prabhavastviti ॥ 18 ॥
When they were told thus by the chief of Gaṇas the gods headed by Dakṣa said—“The mantras are our authorities. We are not the lords.”

मन्त्रा ऊचुस्सुरा यूयं मोहोपहतचेतसः ॥ येन प्रथमभागार्हं न यजध्वं महेश्वरम् ॥ १९ ॥
mantrA UcussurA yUyaM mohopahatacetasaH ॥ yena prathamabhAgArhaM na yajadhvaM mahezvaram ॥ 19 ॥
The Mantras said—“O gods, your minds are oppressed by Tamas. Hence you do not deserve the first share. Worship lord Śiva.”

मंत्रोक्ता अपि ते देवाः सर्वे संमूढचेतसः ॥ भद्राय न ददुर्भागं तत्प्रहाणमभीप्सवः ॥ २० ॥
maMtroktA api te devAH sarve saMmUDhacetasaH ॥ bhadrAya na dadurbhAgaM tatprahANamabhIpsavaH ॥ 20 ॥
Though advised by the Mantras the gods with deluded minds did not offer the share to Bhadra. They desired to drop him out.

यदा तथ्यं च पथ्यं च स्ववाक्यं तद्वृथा ऽभवत् ॥ तदा ततो ययुर्मंदा ब्रह्मलोकं सनातनम् ॥ २१॥
yadA tathyaM ca pathyaM ca svavAkyaM tadvRthA 'bhavat ॥ tadA tato yayurmaMdA brahmalokaM sanAtanam ॥ 21॥
When their truthful and wholesome words went in vain the Mantras turned away from that place and went to the eternal Brahmaloka.

अथोवाच गणाध्यक्षो देवान्विष्णुपुरोगमान् ॥ मन्त्राः प्रमाणं न कृता युष्माभिर्बलगर्वितैः ॥ २२ ॥
athovAca gaNAdhyakSo devAnviSNupurogamAn ॥ mantrAH pramANaM na kRtA yuSmAbhirbalagarvitaiH ॥ 22 ॥
The chief of the host then addressed the demigods, led by Lord Viṣṇu. You who are proud of your strength have not made the mantras proof.

यस्मादस्मिन्मखे देवैरित्थं वयमसत्कृताः ॥ तस्माद्वो जीवितैस्सार्धमपनेष्यामि गर्वितम् ॥ २३ ॥
yasmAdasminmakhe devairitthaM vayamasatkRtAH ॥ tasmAdvo jIvitaissArdhamapaneSyAmi garvitam ॥ 23 ॥
Because of this sacrifice, the demigods have not honored us in this way. Therefore I shall take away your pride along with your lives.

इत्युक्त्वा भगवान् क्रुद्धो व्यदहन्नेत्रवह्निना ॥ यक्षवाटं महाकूटं यथातिस्रः पुरो हरः ॥ २४ ॥
ityuktvA bhagavAn kruddho vyadahannetravahninA ॥ yakSavATaM mahAkUTaM yathAtisraH puro haraH ॥ 24 ॥
After saying thus the infuriated lord burnt the sacrificial altar with the fire of his eyes as Śiva had burnt the three Puras.

ततो गणेश्वरास्सर्वे पर्वतोदग्रविग्रहाः ॥ यूपानुत्पाट्य होत्ःणां कंठेष्वाबध्य रज्जुभिः ॥ २५ ॥
tato gaNezvarAssarve parvatodagravigrahAH ॥ yUpAnutpATya hotHNAM kaMTheSvAbadhya rajjubhiH ॥ 25 ॥
When his words were true and healthy, they were in vain. Then and there the Manda went to the eternal world of Brahma.

यज्ञपात्राणि चित्राणि भित्त्वा संचूर्ण्य वारिणि ॥ गृहीत्वा चैव यज्ञांगं गंगास्रोतसि चिक्षिपुः ॥ २६ ॥
yajJapAtrANi citrANi bhittvA saMcUrNya vAriNi ॥ gRhItvA caiva yajJAMgaM gaMgAsrotasi cikSipuH ॥ 26 ॥
He broke into pieces all kinds of sacrificial vessels and crushed them into water. They also took the sacrificial body and threw it into the stream of Ganga.

तत्र दिव्यान्नपानानां राशयः पर्वतोपमाः ॥ क्षीरनद्यो ऽमृतस्रावाः सुस्निग्धदधिकर्दमाः ॥ २७ ॥
tatra divyAnnapAnAnAM rAzayaH parvatopamAH ॥ kSIranadyo 'mRtasrAvAH susnigdhadadhikardamAH ॥ 27 ॥
There were heaps of divine food and drink resembling mountains The rivers of milk flow with nectar and are muddy with well-oiled curd.

उच्चावचानि मांसानि भक्ष्याणि सुरभीणि च ॥ रसवन्ति च पानानि लेह्यचोष्याणि तानि वै ॥ २८ ॥
uccAvacAni mAMsAni bhakSyANi surabhINi ca ॥ rasavanti ca pAnAni lehyacoSyANi tAni vai ॥ 28 ॥
They also brought a variety of high-quality meats and delicious foods. They are tasty drinks and can be licked and dried.

वीरास्तद्भुजते वक्त्रैर्विलुंपंति क्षिपंति च ॥ वज्रैश्चक्रैर्महाशूलैश्शक्तिभिः पाशपट्टिशैः ॥ २९ ॥
vIrAstadbhujate vaktrairviluMpaMti kSipaMti ca ॥ vajraizcakrairmahAzUlaizzaktibhiH pAzapaTTizaiH ॥ 29 ॥
The heroes eat it with their mouths, plunder it and throw it away. Thunderbolts wheels great spears powerful ropes and clubs.

मुसलैरसिभिष्टंकैर्भिधिपालैः परश्वधैः ॥ उद्धतांस्त्रिदशान्सर्वांल्लोकपालपुरस्सरान् ॥ ३० ॥
musalairasibhiSTaMkairbhidhipAlaiH parazvadhaiH ॥ uddhatAMstridazAnsarvAMllokapAlapurassarAn ॥ 30 ॥
They carried spears, swords, clubs, guards and axes. All the devatas were raised up and followed by the rulers of the worlds.

बिभिदुर्बलिनो वीरा वीरभद्रांगसंभवाः ॥ छिंधि भिंधि क्षिप क्षिप्रं मार्यतां दार्यतामिति ॥ ३१ ॥
bibhidurbalino vIrA vIrabhadrAMgasaMbhavAH ॥ chiMdhi bhiMdhi kSipa kSipraM mAryatAM dAryatAmiti ॥ 31 ॥
The heroes born of Vīrabhadrāṅga broke through the weak. Cut it, break it, throw it away, kill it quickly, tear it apart.

हरस्व प्रहरस्वेति पाटयोत्पाटयेति च ॥ संरंभप्रभवाः क्रूराश्शब्दाः श्रवणशंकवः ॥ ३२ ॥
harasva praharasveti pATayotpATayeti ca ॥ saMraMbhaprabhavAH krUrAzzabdAH zravaNazaMkavaH ॥ 32 ॥
They shouted, “Take it away, strike it down, and throw it out.” The sounds of anger were cruel and difficult to hear.

yatratatra gaNezAnAM jajJire samarocitAH ॥ vivRttanayanAH keciddaSTadaMSTroSThatAlavaH ॥ 33 ॥
Wherever the Lords of Ganesha were born, they were equally pleasing to them. Some of them had their eyes turned away and their teeth and lips and palms bitten.

आश्रमस्थान्समाकृष्य मारयन्ति तपोधनात् ॥ स्रुवानपहरन्तश्च क्षिपन्तोग्निं जलेषु च ॥ ३४ ॥
AzramasthAnsamAkRSya mArayanti tapodhanAt ॥ sruvAnapaharantazca kSipantogniM jaleSu ca ॥ 34 ॥
They drag the residents of the āśrama and kill them because they are rich in austerities. They took away the ladle and threw fire into the water.

कलशानपि भिन्दंतश्छिंदंतो मणिवेदिकाः ॥ गायंतश्च नदन्तश्च हसन्तश्च मुहुर्मुहुः ॥ ३५ ॥
kalazAnapi bhindaMtazchiMdaMto maNivedikAH ॥ gAyaMtazca nadantazca hasantazca muhurmuhuH ॥ 35 ॥
They also broke the urns and cut down the jeweled altars. Singing and shouting and laughing again and again.

raktAsavaM pibantazca nanRturgaNapuMgavAH ॥ nirmathya seMdrAnamarAn gaNendrAnvRSendranAgendramRgendrasArAH ॥ 36 ॥

cakrurbahUnyapratimabhAvAH saharSaromANi viceSTitAni ॥ nandaMti kecitpraharanti keciddhAvanti kecitpralapanti kecit ॥ 37 ॥
They performed many incomparable acts, their hair moving with joy. Some rejoiced, some beat, some ran, some talked.

nRtyanti kecidvihasanti kecidvalganti kecitpramathA balena ॥ 38 ॥
The Pramathas rejoiced, struck, ran, prattled, danced, laughed and jumped about.

केचिज्जिघृक्षंति घनान्स तोयान्केचिद्ग्रहीतुं रविमुत्पतंति ॥ केचित्प्रसर्तुं पवनेन सार्धमिच्छंति भीमाः प्रमथा वियत्स्थाः ॥ ३९ ॥
kecijjighRkSaMti ghanAnsa toyAnkecidgrahItuM ravimutpataMti ॥ kecitprasartuM pavanena sArdhamicchaMti bhImAH pramathA viyatsthAH ॥ 39 ॥
Some of them evinced a desire to seize the watery clouds, some jumped up to seize the sun; others wished to blow along with the wind.

Some looking like the black clouds uprooted the houses, windows, daises, hurled them into water and roared.

The doors, door-frames and walls of the sacrificial mansion were upset; the windows, ceiling frames, the halls were destroyed utterly. The complete edifice of sacrifice crumbled helplessly like a statement without foundation.

hA nAtha tAteti pituH suteti bhratarmamAmbeti ca mAtuleti ॥ utpATyamAneSu gRheSu nAryo hyAnAthazabdAnbahuzaH pracakruH ॥ 43 ॥
While houses were being dismantled, the women shrieked and cried helplessly “O husband” “O Child” “O father” “O brother” “O mother” “O uncle.”
