RSaya UcuH ॥ devI dakSasya tanayA tyaktvA dAkSAyaNI tanum ॥ kathaM himavataH putrI menAyAmabhavatpurA ॥ 1 ॥
The sages said:— How did the goddess, daughter of Dakṣa become the daughter of Himavat and Menā after abandoning the body born of Dakṣa?

Vāyu said:— Please listen. I shall narrate the activity of the mean Dakṣa resulting in his insult to all gods due to his sinful blunder.

purA surAsurAH sarve siddhAzca paramarSayaH ॥ kadAciddraSTumIzAnaM himavacchikharaM yayuH ॥ 5 ॥
Once formerly, all the gods, Asuras, Siddhas and the sages went to the summit of Himavat in order to see the lord.

O Brahmins, the lord and the goddess were seated on a divine scat as they granted interview to the gods and others.

tadAnImeva dakSo 'pi gatastatra sahAmaraiH ॥ jAmAtaraM haraM draSTuM draSTuM cAtmasutAM satIm ॥ 7 ॥
At the same time Dakṣa too had accompanied the gods in order to see Śiva his son-in-law and the goddess his own daughter.

तदात्मगौरवाद्देवो देव्या दक्षे समागते ॥ देवादिभ्यो विशेषेण न कदाचिदभूत्स्मृतिः ॥ ८ ॥
tadAtmagauravAddevo devyA dakSe samAgate ॥ devAdibhyo vizeSeNa na kadAcidabhUtsmRtiH ॥ 8 ॥
In view of their dignity, the lord and the Goddess did not give any special preferential treatment to Dakṣa.

तस्य तस्याः परं भावमज्ञातुश्चापि केवलम् ॥ पुत्रीत्येवं विमूढस्य तस्यां वैरमजायत ॥ ९ ॥
tasya tasyAH paraM bhAvamajJAtuzcApi kevalam ॥ putrItyevaM vimUDhasya tasyAM vairamajAyata ॥ 9 ॥
But deluded that he was, Dakṣa did not realise the greatness of the lord and the goddess. Thinking her to be his daughter he began to nurse a grudge and hatred against her.

ततस्तेनैव वैरेण विधिना च प्रचोदितः ॥ नाजुवाह भवं दक्षो दीक्षितस्तामपि द्विषन् ॥ १० ॥
tatastenaiva vaireNa vidhinA ca pracoditaH ॥ nAjuvAha bhavaM dakSo dIkSitastAmapi dviSan ॥ 10 ॥
Due to this enmity and further incited by Brahmā, Dakṣa after initiation did not invite them in the sacrifice.

On hearing from Nārada that they had assembled there, Satī went to her father’s abode after informing Rudra.

Then a divine aerial chariot with all faces was placed there It is rich in characteristics and rides comfortably and is extremely attractive.

It resembled a river of burnt gold and was adorned with various gems. The fire with a pearl canopy was decorated with garlands and lace.

तप्तकंचननिर्व्यूहं रत्नस्तंभशतावृतम् ॥ वज्रकल्पितसोपानं विद्रुमस्तंभतोरणम् ॥ १५ ॥

It was decorated with burnt gold and surrounded by hundreds of gemstone pillars. The staircase was made of diamonds and the archway was made of coral pillars.

पुष्पपट्टपरिस्तीर्णं चित्ररत्नमहासनम् ॥ वज्रजालकिरच्छिद्रमच्छिद्रमणिकुट्टिमम् ॥ १६ ॥
puSpapaTTaparistIrNaM citraratnamahAsanam ॥ vajrajAlakiracchidramacchidramaNikuTTimam ॥ 16 ॥
The throne was covered with a flower arrangement and was decorated with many gems. The hole in the diamond network was a hole in the gemstone box.

She was adorned with a jeweled staff and was very beautiful like a great bull. The front was decorated with a cloud-white Ketu.

ratnakaMcukaguptAMgaizcitravetrakapANibhiH ॥ adhiSThitamahAdvAramapradhRSyairguNezvaraiH ॥ 18 ॥
They wore jeweled armlets and protected their bodies and carried picturesque vetras in their hands. The great gate is occupied by the invincible masters of virtues.

mRdaMgatAlagItAdiveNuvINAvizAradaiH ॥ vidagdhaveSabhASaizca bahubhiH strIjanairvRtam ॥ 19 ॥
They played mṛdangas, rhythms, songs and other flutes and veenas. It was surrounded by many women in eloquent dress and language.

Aruroha mahAdevI saha priyasakhIjanaiH ॥ cAmAravyaJjanaM tasyA vajradaMDamanohare ॥ 20 ॥
The great goddess Mahadevī along with her beloved companions ascended the mountain Her chamara expression was beautiful like a thunderbolt.

gRhItvA rudrakanye dve vivIjaturubhe zubhe ॥ tadAcAmarayormadhye devyA vadanamAbabhau ॥ 21 ॥
They seized the two daughters of Lord Śiva and separated them from each other. Then the face of the goddess appeared between the chamaras.

In the midst of each other’s battle, the two swans looked like lotuses. Her umbrella was like the moon and a garland of flowers was on her head.

dhRtamuktAparikSiptaM babhAra premanirbharA ॥ tacchatramujjvalaM devyA ruruce vadanopari ॥ 23 ॥
Overwhelmed with love, she carried the pearls she had held and thrown about. That bright umbrella adorned the face of the goddess.

The orb of the nectar above the vessel is like the orb of the moon. Then there was a beautiful woman sitting in front of him with a beautiful smile.

He entertained the chaste lady by playing with dice and gambling. The illustrious sandals of the goddess were adorned with beautiful gems.

Then he placed the space between his breasts and worshiped the goddess. Another golden beauty grabbed the glowing mirror.

Another woman carried a palm tree and another a box of betel nut. A beautiful woman carried a playful pig in her beautiful hand.

kAcittu sumanojJAni puSpANi surabhINi ca ॥ kAcidAbharaNAdhAraM babhAra kamalekSaNA ॥ 28 ॥
A certain lady held charming fragrant flowers. Another lotus-eyed lady held the repository of ornaments.

kAcicca punarAlepaM suprasUtaM zubhAMjanam ॥ anyAzca sadRzAstAstA yathAsvamucitakriyAH ॥ 29 ॥
Another woman again applied ointment to the well-produced and auspicious ointment. Others like them performed their duties according to their own proper duties.

AvRttyA tAM mahAdevImasevaMta samaMtataH ॥ atIva zuzubhe tAsAmaMtare paramezvarI ॥ 30 ॥
They repeatedly worshiped that great goddess from all sides. The goddess shone very brightly in the midst of them.

तारापरिषदो मध्ये चंद्रलेखेव शारदी ॥ ततः शंखसमुत्थस्य नादस्य समनंतरम् ॥ ३१ ॥
tArApariSado madhye caMdralekheva zAradI ॥ tataH zaMkhasamutthasya nAdasya samanaMtaram ॥ 31 ॥
The autumn moon is in the middle of the constellation of stars. Then followed by the sound of the conchshell.

प्रास्थानिको महानादः पटहः समताड्यत ॥ ततो मधुरवाद्यानि सह तालोद्यतैस्स्वनैः ॥ ३२ ॥
prAsthAniko mahAnAdaH paTahaH samatADyata ॥ tato madhuravAdyAni saha tAlodyataissvanaiH ॥ 32 ॥
The loud noise of the Prasthānika beat the pataha Then sweet musical instruments accompanied by rhythmic sounds.

अनाहतानि सन्नेदुः काहलानां शतानि च ॥ सायुधानां गणेशानां महेशसमतेजसाम् ॥ ३३ ॥
anAhatAni sanneduH kAhalAnAM zatAni ca ॥ sAyudhAnAM gaNezAnAM mahezasamatejasAm ॥ 33 ॥
Hundreds of cows roared without being hit. They were armed with weapons and effulgent like Lord Mahesh.

sahasrANi zatAnyaSTau tadAnIM purato yayuH ॥ teSAM madhye vRSArUDho gajArUDho yathA guruH ॥ 34 ॥
Eight hundred thousand men then marched in front of him. Among them he rode on a bull like a preceptor on an elephant.

jagAma gaNapaH zrImAn somanaMdIzvarArcitaH ॥ devaduMdubhayo nedurdivi divyasukhA ghanAH ॥ 35 ॥
The opulent Ganesha, worshiped by Lord Somanandi, departed. Clouds of divine happiness sounded in the sky like the kettledrums of the gods.

ननृतुर्मुनयस्सर्वे मुमुदुः सिद्धयोगिनः ॥ ससृजुः पुष्पवृष्टिं च वितानोपरि वारिदाः ॥ ३६ ॥
nanRturmunayassarve mumuduH siddhayoginaH ॥ sasRjuH puSpavRSTiM ca vitAnopari vAridAH ॥ 36 ॥
All the sages danced and the perfected yogis rejoiced The rainbows rained down flowers on the canopy.

तदा देवगणैश्चान्यैः पथि सर्वत्र संगता ॥ क्षणादिव पितुर्गेहं प्रविवेश महेश्वरी ॥ ३७ ॥
tadA devagaNaizcAnyaiH pathi sarvatra saMgatA ॥ kSaNAdiva piturgehaM praviveza mahezvarI ॥ 37 ॥
At that time she was accompanied by hosts of devatas and others everywhere along the way In an instant Maheshwari entered her father's house.

तां दृष्ट्वा कुपितो दक्षश्चात्मनः क्षयकारणात् ॥ तस्या यवीयसीभ्यो ऽपि चक्रे पूजाम सत्कृताम् ॥ ३८ ॥
tAM dRSTvA kupito dakSazcAtmanaH kSayakAraNAt ॥ tasyA yavIyasIbhyo 'pi cakre pUjAma satkRtAm ॥ 38 ॥
On seeing her Dakṣa became infuriated which subsequently became the cause of his destruction. He worshipped her younger sisters too in an insulting manner.

tadA zazimukhI devI pitaraM sadasi sthitam ॥ aMbikA yuktamavyagramuvAcAkRpaNaM vacaH ॥ 39 ॥
Then the goddess spoke to her father in the midst of the assembly, relevantly unexcitedly and undemeaningly.

devyuvAca ॥ brahmAdayaH pizAcAMtA yasyAjJAvazavartinaH ॥ sa devassAMprataM tAta vidhinA nArcitaH kila ॥ 40 ॥
The goddess said:— O father, the lord at whose bidding everyone from Brahmā to the Piśācas becomes subservient has not been duly worshipped.

tadAstAM mama jyAyasyAH putryAH pUjAM kimIdRzIm ॥ asatkRtAmavajJAya kRtavAnasi garhitam ॥ 41 ॥
Let that alone. Why did you slight me your eldest daughter in a despicable manner?

The Śruti says that these are great sinners—viz. a stealer of learning, a traitor to the preceptor and an insulter of the Vedas and of the god. They deserve to be punished.

The glorious leader of mountains attained the fruit of his merits. It was for her that he had performed penance for a long time.

These sons-in-law of yours were born during the reign of Vaivasvata Manu. All those born of the womb will be born equally in the sacrifices of the Brahman.

Then in the Cākṣusa Manvantara Dakṣa was born as the grandson of Prācinabarhiṣ and the son of Pracetas.

Bhṛgu and others were born in the Vaivasvata Manvantara in the sacrifice of Brahmā bearing the bodies of Varuṇa.

Then in the Vaivasvata Manvantara in the virtuous sacrifice of the wicked Dakṣa the lord created obstacles.
