The sages said:— Please narrate the Manvantaras, the Kalpas, the subsidiary creations and the re-creation after dissolution.

वायुरुवाच ॥ कालसंख्याविवृत्तस्य परार्धो ब्रह्मणस्स्मृतः ॥ तावांश्चैवास्य कालोन्यस्तस्यांते प्रतिसृज्यते ॥ २ ॥
vAyuruvAca ॥ kAlasaMkhyAvivRttasya parArdho brahmaNassmRtaH ॥ tAvAMzcaivAsya kAlonyastasyAMte pratisRjyate ॥ 2 ॥
Vāyu said:— The tenure of Brahmā who comes and goes according to the calculation of time is first a Parārdha and another Parārdha thereafter. At the end of the latter the re-creation takes place.

divase divase tasya brahmaNaH pUrvajanmanaH ॥ caturdazamahAbhAgA manUnAM parivRttayaH ॥ 3 ॥
In each day in the life of Brahmā, the fourteen Manus come and go.

अनादित्वादनंतत्वादज्ञेयत्वाच्च कृत्स्नशः ॥ मन्वंतराणि कल्पाश्च न शक्या वचनात्पृथक् ॥ ४ ॥
anAditvAdanaMtatvAdajJeyatvAcca kRtsnazaH ॥ manvaMtarANi kalpAzca na zakyA vacanAtpRthak ॥ 4 ॥
The Manvantaras and Kalpas have no beginning or end. Being unknowable they cannot be narrated separately.

ukteSvapi ca sarveSu zRNvatAM vo vaco mama ॥ kimihAsti phalaM tasmAnna pRthakvaktumutsahe ॥ 5 ॥
Even if they be knowable, of what avail is it to you to know them. Hence I do not attempt to narrate them separately.

ya eva khalu kalpeSu kalpaH saMprati vartate ॥ tatra saMkSipya vartaMte sRSTayaH pratisRSTayaH ॥ 6 ॥
Among these Kalpas, I describe the creation and re-creation of this Kalpa.

यस्त्वयं वर्तते कल्पो वाराहो नाम नामतः ॥ अस्मिन्नपि द्विजश्रेष्ठा मनवस्तु चतुर्दश ॥ ७ ॥
yastvayaM vartate kalpo vArAho nAma nAmataH ॥ asminnapi dvijazreSThA manavastu caturdaza ॥ 7 ॥
The current Kalpa is named Vārāha. O excellent brahmins, in this Kalpa the Manus are fourteen in number.

स्वायंभुवादयस्सप्त सप्त सावर्णिकादयः ॥ तेषु वैवस्वतो नाम सप्तमो वर्तते मनुः ॥ ८ ॥
svAyaMbhuvAdayassapta sapta sAvarNikAdayaH ॥ teSu vaivasvato nAma saptamo vartate manuH ॥ 8 ॥
Among the Manus, Svāyambhuva and others constitute the first seven Manus, Sāvarṇika and others constitute the next seven. Among them Vaivasvata Manu is the seventh.

मन्वंतरेषु सर्वेषु सर्गसंहारवृत्तयः ॥ प्रायः समाभवंतीति तर्कः कार्यो विजानता ॥ ९ ॥
manvaMtareSu sarveSu sargasaMhAravRttayaH ॥ prAyaH samAbhavaMtIti tarkaH kAryo vijAnatA ॥ 9 ॥
It shall be known that in all the Manvantaras, the creation, sustenance and annihilation are more or less of the same nature.

पूर्वकल्पे परावृत्ते प्रवृत्ते कालमारुते ॥ समुन्मूलितमूलेषु वृक्षेषु च वनेषु च ॥ १० ॥
pUrvakalpe parAvRtte pravRtte kAlamArute ॥ samunmUlitamUleSu vRkSeSu ca vaneSu ca ॥ 10 ॥
When the previous kalpa was reversed, the wind of time began to blow. They were uprooted from the trees and in the forests.

जगंति तृणवक्त्रीणि देवे दहति पावके ॥ वृष्ट्या भुवि निषिक्तायां विवेलेष्वर्णवेषु च ॥ ११ ॥
jagaMti tRNavaktrINi deve dahati pAvake ॥ vRSTyA bhuvi niSiktAyAM viveleSvarNaveSu ca ॥ 11 ॥
The grass-faced worlds are burning in the fire of the gods. The rain soaked the ground in the valleys and in the golden fields.

दिक्षु सर्वासु मग्नासु वारिपूरे महीयसि ॥ तदद्भिश्चटुलाक्षेपैस्तरंगभुजमण्डलैः ॥ १२ ॥
dikSu sarvAsu magnAsu vAripUre mahIyasi ॥ tadadbhizcaTulAkSepaistaraMgabhujamaNDalaiH ॥ 12 ॥
The great ocean was submerged in all directions. Then with their charming thrusts the waves and arms circled.

प्रारब्धचण्डनृत्येषु ततः प्रलयवारिषु ॥ ब्रह्मा नारायणो भूत्वा सुष्वाप सलिले सुखम् ॥ १३ ॥
prArabdhacaNDanRtyeSu tataH pralayavAriSu ॥ brahmA nArAyaNo bhUtvA suSvApa salile sukham ॥ 13 ॥
Then, as the fierce dances began, the waters of annihilation began. Brahma assumed the form of Narayana and fell asleep happily in the water.

इमं चोदाहरन्मंत्रं श्लोकं नारायणं प्रति ॥ तं शृणुध्वं मुनिश्रेष्ठास्तदर्थं चाक्षराश्रयम् ॥ १४ ॥
imaM codAharanmaMtraM zlokaM nArAyaNaM prati ॥ taM zRNudhvaM munizreSThAstadarthaM cAkSarAzrayam ॥ 14 ॥
One shall cite this mantra, a Śloka, regarding Nārāyaṇa. O excellent sages, listen to the mantra as well as the actual meaning of the words.

आपो नारा इति प्रोक्ता आपो वै नरसूनवः ॥ अयनं तस्य ता यस्मात्तेन नारायणः स्मृतः ॥ १५ ॥
Apo nArA iti proktA Apo vai narasUnavaH ॥ ayanaM tasya tA yasmAttena nArAyaNaH smRtaH ॥ 15 ॥
Waters are called ‘Nārāḥ’. Waters are sons of Nara. He is called Nārāyaṇa because waters constitute his abode.

शिवयोगमयीं निद्रां कुर्वन्तं त्रिदशेश्वरम् ॥ बद्धांजलि पुटास्सिद्धा जनलोकनिवासिनः ॥ १६ ॥
zivayogamayIM nidrAM kurvantaM tridazezvaram ॥ baddhAMjali puTAssiddhA janalokanivAsinaH ॥ 16 ॥
Lord Śiva, the lord of the demigods, was sleeping in the yoga of Lord Śiva. The inhabitants of Janaloka are perfect in their folded hands.

स्तोत्रैः प्रबोधयामासुः प्रभातसमये सुराः ॥ यथा सृष्ट्यादिसमये ईश्वरं श्रुतयः पुरा ॥ १७ ॥
stotraiH prabodhayAmAsuH prabhAtasamaye surAH ॥ yathA sRSTyAdisamaye IzvaraM zrutayaH purA ॥ 17 ॥
At dawn the demigods awakened him with hymns. Just as the Vedas in the past described God at the beginning of creation.

ततः प्रबुद्ध उत्थाय शयनात्तोयमध्यगात् ॥ उदैक्षत दिशः सर्वा योगनिद्रालसेक्षणः ॥ १८ ॥
tataH prabuddha utthAya zayanAttoyamadhyagAt ॥ udaikSata dizaH sarvA yoganidrAlasekSaNaH ॥ 18 ॥
The lord woke up, got up from his bed and came to the water. He looked all round at the quarters with the Yogic slumber still lingering in the eyes idly.

नापश्यत्स तदा किंचित्स्वात्मनो व्यतिरेकि यत् ॥ सविस्मय इवासीनः परां चिंतामुपागमत् ॥ १९ ॥
nApazyatsa tadA kiMcitsvAtmano vyatireki yat ॥ savismaya ivAsInaH parAM ciMtAmupAgamat ॥ 19 ॥
He did not see anything except himself He sat up like a wonderstruck person and began to ponder deeply.

क्व सा भगवती या तु मनोज्ञा महती मही ॥ नानाविधमहाशैलनदीनगरकानना ॥ २० ॥
kva sA bhagavatI yA tu manojJA mahatI mahI ॥ nAnAvidhamahAzailanadInagarakAnanA ॥ 20 ॥
“Where is that charming goddess the great Earth, with her lofty mountains, rivers, cities and forests.”

एवं संचिंतयन्ब्रह्मा बुबुधे नैव भूस्थितिम् ॥ तदा सस्मार पितरं भगवंतं त्रिलोचनम् ॥ २१ ॥
evaM saMciMtayanbrahmA bubudhe naiva bhUsthitim ॥ tadA sasmAra pitaraM bhagavaMtaM trilocanam ॥ 21 ॥
Thinking thus Brahmā could not locate the earth. Then he thought of his father, the three-eyed lord.

स्मरणाद्देवदेवस्य भवस्यामिततेजसः ॥ ज्ञातवान्सलिले मग्नां धरणीं धरणीपतिः ॥ २२ ॥
smaraNAddevadevasya bhavasyAmitatejasaH ॥ jJAtavAnsalile magnAM dharaNIM dharaNIpatiH ॥ 22 ॥
By meditating on the lord of gods, of immeasurable splendour, Brahmā understood that the earth had sunk under water.

ततो भूमेस्समुद्धारं कर्तुकामः प्रजापतिः ॥ जलक्रीडोचितं दिव्यं वाराहं रूपमस्मरत् ॥ २३ ॥
tato bhUmessamuddhAraM kartukAmaH prajApatiH ॥ jalakrIDocitaM divyaM vArAhaM rUpamasmarat ॥ 23 ॥
Then Brahmā desirous of lifting up the Earth, thought of the divine Boar supporting about and diving into the waters.

महापर्वतवर्ष्माणं महाजलदनिःस्वनम् ॥ नीलमेघप्रतीकाशं दीप्तशब्दं भयानकम् ॥ २४ ॥
mahAparvatavarSmANaM mahAjaladaniHsvanam ॥ nIlameghapratIkAzaM dIptazabdaM bhayAnakam ॥ 24 ॥
There were huge mountain rains and the roar of huge clouds It was like a blue cloud and made a terrifying sound like a glowing cloud.

पीनवृत्तघनस्कंधपीनोन्नतकटीतटम् ॥ ह्रस्ववृत्तोरुजंघाग्रं सुतीक्ष्णपुरमण्डलम् ॥ २५ ॥
pInavRttaghanaskaMdhapInonnatakaTItaTam ॥ hrasvavRttorujaMghAgraM sutIkSNapuramaNDalam ॥ 25 ॥
He had a thick rounded thick shoulder and a thick raised waist. The tip of the thighs was short round and the circle of the city was very sharp.

पद्मरागमणिप्रख्यं वृत्तभीषणलोचनम् ॥ वृत्तदीर्घमहागात्रं स्तब्धकर्णस्थलोज्ज्वलम् ॥ २६ ॥
padmarAgamaNiprakhyaM vRttabhISaNalocanam ॥ vRttadIrghamahAgAtraM stabdhakarNasthalojjvalam ॥ 26 ॥
His eyes were round and terrifying, resembling a lotus or pearl. He had a rounded long body and a bright spot on his stunned ears.

udIrNocchvAsanizvAsaghUrNitapralayArNavam ॥ visphuratsusaTAcchannakapolaskaMdhabaMdhuram ॥ 27 ॥
The ocean of annihilation was whirling with breathlessness. His cheeks and shoulders were covered with a sparkling scarf.

मणिभिर्भूषणैश्चित्रैर्महारत्नैःपरिष्कृतम् ॥ विराजमानं विद्युद्भिर्मेघसंघमिवोन्नतम् ॥ २८ ॥
maNibhirbhUSaNaizcitrairmahAratnaiHpariSkRtam ॥ virAjamAnaM vidyudbhirmeghasaMghamivonnatam ॥ 28 ॥
It was adorned with precious stones and various kinds of ornaments It shone with lightning and rose like a mass of clouds.

आस्थाय विपुलं रूपं वाराहममितं विधिः ॥ पृथिव्युद्धरणार्थाय प्रविवेश रसातलम् ॥ २९ ॥
AsthAya vipulaM rUpaM vArAhamamitaM vidhiH ॥ pRthivyuddharaNArthAya praviveza rasAtalam ॥ 29 ॥
The method is immeasurable, assuming the vast form of a boar. He entered the bottom of the ocean to lift the earth.

स तदा शुशुभे ऽतीव सूकरो गिरिसंनिभः ॥ लिंगाकृतेर्महेशस्य पादमूलं गतो यथा ॥ ३० ॥
sa tadA zuzubhe 'tIva sUkaro girisaMnibhaH ॥ liMgAkRtermahezasya pAdamUlaM gato yathA ॥ 30 ॥
Then the boar that resembled a mountain shone well as if he had reached the foot of the lord.

ततस्स सलिले मग्नां पृथिवीं पृथिवींधरः ॥ उद्धृत्यालिंग्य दंष्ट्राभ्यामुन्ममज्ज रसातलात् ॥ ३१ ॥
tatassa salile magnAM pRthivIM pRthivIMdharaH ॥ uddhRtyAliMgya daMSTrAbhyAmunmamajja rasAtalAt ॥ 31 ॥
Then he lifted the Earth sunk under water and held it on his curved fangs. He rose up from the nether worlds.

तं दृष्ट्वा मुनयस्सिद्धा जनलोकनिवासिनः ॥ मुमुदुर्ननृतुर्मूर्ध्नि तस्य पुष्पैरवाकिरन् ॥ ३२ ॥
taM dRSTvA munayassiddhA janalokanivAsinaH ॥ mumudurnanRturmUrdhni tasya puSpairavAkiran ॥ 32 ॥
On seeing him, the Siddhas, sages and other human beings rejoiced and danced. They scattered flowers on his head.

वपुर्महावराहस्य शुशुभे पुष्पसंवृतम् ॥ पतद्भिरिव खद्योतैः प्राशुरंजनपर्वतः ॥ ३३ ॥
vapurmahAvarAhasya zuzubhe puSpasaMvRtam ॥ patadbhiriva khadyotaiH prAzuraMjanaparvataH ॥ 33 ॥
The body of the Boar covered up with flowers shone like the mountain of collyrium with glow-worms falling on it.

ततः संस्थानमानीय वराहो महतीं महीम् ॥ स्वमेव रूपमास्थाय स्थापयामास वै विभुः ॥ ३४ ॥
tataH saMsthAnamAnIya varAho mahatIM mahIm ॥ svameva rUpamAsthAya sthApayAmAsa vai vibhuH ॥ 34 ॥
The Boar brought the earth to its own place. It then assumed his natural form and fixed it there.

पृथिवीं च समीकृत्य पृथिव्यां स्थापयन्गिरीन् ॥ भूराद्यांश्चतुरो लोकान् कल्पयामास पूर्ववत् ॥ ३५ ॥
pRthivIM ca samIkRtya pRthivyAM sthApayangirIn ॥ bhUrAdyAMzcaturo lokAn kalpayAmAsa pUrvavat ॥ 35 ॥
He levelled the earth, fixed the mountains and set up the four worlds on the earth as before.

इति सह महतीं महीं महीध्रैः प्रलयमहाजलधेरधःस्थमध्यात् ॥ उपरि च विनिवेश्य विश्वकर्मा चरमचरं च जगत्ससर्ज भूयः ॥ ३६ ॥
iti saha mahatIM mahIM mahIdhraiH pralayamahAjaladheradhaHsthamadhyAt ॥ upari ca vinivezya vizvakarmA caramacaraM ca jagatsasarja bhUyaH ॥ 36 ॥
Thus after lifting the earth along with the mountains from the midst of the vast sea of dissolution the lord created the universe—the mobile and immobile beings.
