vAyuruvAca ॥ puruSAdhiSThitAtpUrvamavyaktAdIzvarAjJayA ॥ buddhyAdayo vizeSAMtA vikArAzcAbhavan kramAt ॥ 1 ॥
Vāyu said:— At the outset, at the bidding of Īśvara the secondary elements beginning with the cosmic intellect and ending with Viśeṣa came into being from the Avyakta presided over by Puruṣa.

ततस्तेभ्यो विकारेभ्यो रुद्रो विष्णुः पितामहः ॥ कारणत्वेन सर्वेषां त्रयो देवाः प्रजज्ञिरे ॥ २ ॥
tatastebhyo vikArebhyo rudro viSNuH pitAmahaH ॥ kAraNatvena sarveSAM trayo devAH prajajJire ॥ 2 ॥
Then from these, the three deities Rudra, Viṣṇu and Brahmā were born as the cause of all.

sarvato bhuvanavyAptizaktimavyAhatAM kvacit ॥ jJAnamapratimaM zazvadaizvaryaM cANimAdikam ॥ 3 ॥
The power of pervading the universe in all directions is never hindered. Knowledge is incomparable and eternally opulent and aṇimā and others.

सृष्टिस्थितिलयाख्येषु कर्मसु त्रिषु हेतुताम् ॥ प्रभुत्वेन सहैतेषां प्रसीदति महेश्वरः ॥ ४ ॥
sRSTisthitilayAkhyeSu karmasu triSu hetutAm ॥ prabhutvena sahaiteSAM prasIdati mahezvaraH ॥ 4 ॥
He is the cause of the three activities known as creation, maintenance and time. The Supreme Lord is pleased with these along with His dominion.

kalpAntare punasteSAmaspardhA buddhimohinAm ॥ sargarakSAlayAcAraM pratyekaM pradadau ca saH ॥ 5 ॥
In another Kalpa he conferred on each the activities of creation, sustenance and dissolution in order that they may not have any mutual rivalry due to delusion of intellect.

एते परस्परोत्पन्ना धारयन्ति परस्परम् ॥ परस्परेण वर्धंते परस्परमनुव्रताः ॥ ६ ॥
ete parasparotpannA dhArayanti parasparam ॥ paraspareNa vardhaMte parasparamanuvratAH ॥ 6 ॥
These three are born from one another, sustain one another, flourish one another, respect and follow one another.

kvacidbrahmA kvacidviSNuH kvacidrudraH prazasyate ॥ nAnena teSAmAdhikyamaizvaryaM cAtiricyate ॥ 7 ॥
Somewhere Brahmā, somewhere Viṣṇu and somewhere Rudra are praised. However their glory docs not diminish.

मूर्खा निंदंति तान्वाग्भिः संरंभाभिनिवेशिनः ॥ यातुधाना भवंत्येव पिशाचाश्च न संशयः ॥ ८ ॥
mUrkhA niMdaMti tAnvAgbhiH saMraMbhAbhinivezinaH ॥ yAtudhAnA bhavaMtyeva pizAcAzca na saMzayaH ॥ 8 ॥
Only impetuous fools censure them. Undoubtedly they become demons and ghosts.

Lord Śiva who is beyond the three Guṇas, who is divided into four units, who is all-in-all and the support of all is the cause of creation.

soyamAtmA trayasyAsya prakRteH puruSasya ca ॥ lIlAkRtajagatsRSTirIzvaratve vyavasthitaH ॥ 10 ॥
The Atman who has created the universe sportively remains as the lord of three deities as well as of Prakṛti and Puruṣa.

यस्सर्वस्मात्परो नित्यो निष्कलः परमेश्वरः ॥ स एव च तदाधारस्तदात्मा तदधिष्ठितः ॥ ११ ॥
yassarvasmAtparo nityo niSkalaH paramezvaraH ॥ sa eva ca tadAdhArastadAtmA tadadhiSThitaH ॥ 11 ॥
He alone is their support, he who is greater than all, who is supreme, eternal, devoid of attributes and is their Ātman and their presiding deity.

तस्मान्महेश्वरश्चैव प्रकृतिः पुरुषस्तथा ॥ सदाशिवभवो विष्णुर्ब्रह्मा सर्वशिवात्मकम् ॥ १२ ॥
tasmAnmahezvarazcaiva prakRtiH puruSastathA ॥ sadAzivabhavo viSNurbrahmA sarvazivAtmakam ॥ 12 ॥
Hence he alone is Prakṛti, Puruṣa, Sadāśiva, Bhava, Viṣṇu and Brahmā. Everything is identical with Śiva.

प्रधानात्प्रथमं जज्ञे वृद्धिः ख्यातिर्मतिर्महान् ॥ महत्तत्त्वस्य संक्षोभादहंकारस्त्रिधा ऽभवत् ॥ १३ ॥
pradhAnAtprathamaM jajJe vRddhiH khyAtirmatirmahAn ॥ mahattattvasya saMkSobhAdahaMkArastridhA 'bhavat ॥ 13 ॥
In the beginning were born the cosmic intellect, the great principle. When it was agitated the ego was born. The ego was split into three.

ahaMkArazca bhUtAni tanmAtrAnIMdriyANi ca ॥ vaikArikAdahaMkArAtsattvodriktAttu sAttvikaH ॥ 14 ॥
The ego split into the gross and subtle elements and the sense-organs. When the ego had the Sattva predominant the Sāttvika creation took place.

वैकारिकः स सर्गस्तु युगपत्संप्रवर्तते ॥ बुद्धीन्द्रियाणि पञ्चैव पञ्चकर्मेंद्रियाणि च ॥ १५ ॥
vaikArikaH sa sargastu yugapatsaMpravartate ॥ buddhIndriyANi paJcaiva paJcakarmeMdriyANi ca ॥ 15 ॥
That creation, which is transformational, is simultaneously underway. The five senses of intelligence and the five senses of action.

एकादशं मनस्तत्र स्वगुणेनोभयात्मकम् ॥ तमोयुक्तादहंकाराद्भूततन्मात्रसंभवः ॥ १६ ॥
ekAdazaM manastatra svaguNenobhayAtmakam ॥ tamoyuktAdahaMkArAdbhUtatanmAtrasaMbhavaH ॥ 16 ॥
The eleventh mind is composed of both by its own modes of nature. From the ego endowed with darkness the universe is born.

भूतानामादिभूतत्वाद्भूतादिः कथ्यते तु सः ॥ भूतादेश्शब्दमात्रं स्यात्तत्र चाकाशसंभवः ॥ १७ ॥
bhUtAnAmAdibhUtatvAdbhUtAdiH kathyate tu saH ॥ bhUtAdezzabdamAtraM syAttatra cAkAzasaMbhavaH ॥ 17 ॥
Since it is the cause of Bhūtas it is called Bhūtādi. From this is born the Śabdatanmātra, from this the ether.

आकाशात्स्पर्श उत्पन्नः स्पर्शाद्वायुसमुद्भवः ॥ वायो रूपं ततस्तेजस्तेजसो रससंभवः ॥ १८ ॥
AkAzAtsparza utpannaH sparzAdvAyusamudbhavaH ॥ vAyo rUpaM tatastejastejaso rasasaMbhavaH ॥ 18 ॥
From the ether the Sparśatanmātra, from it Vāyu, from Vāyu the Rūpatanmātra, from this the Tejas, from Tejas the Rasatanmātra is born.

रसादापस्समुत्पन्नास्तेभ्यो गन्धसमुद्भवः ॥ गन्धाच्च पृथिवी जाता भूतेभ्योन्यच्चराचरम् ॥ १९ ॥
rasAdApassamutpannAstebhyo gandhasamudbhavaH ॥ gandhAcca pRthivI jAtA bhUtebhyonyaccarAcaram ॥ 19 ॥
From Rasa the water; from this the Gandha Tanmātra is born, from this the Pṛthivī, from these elements the mobile and immobile beings are created.

पुरुषाधिष्ठितत्वाच्च अव्यक्तानुग्रहेण च ॥ महदादिविशेषान्ता ह्यण्डमुत्पादयन्ति ते ॥ २० ॥
puruSAdhiSThitatvAcca avyaktAnugraheNa ca ॥ mahadAdivizeSAntA hyaNDamutpAdayanti te ॥ 20 ॥
Since they are presided over by Puruṣa and blessed by Avyakta the principles beginning with Mahat and ending with Viśeṣa generate the cosmic egg.

तत्र कार्यं च करणं संसिद्धं ब्रह्मणो यदा ॥ तदंडे सुप्रवृद्धो ऽभूत्क्षेत्रज्ञो ब्रह्मसंज्ञितः ॥ २१ ॥
tatra kAryaM ca karaNaM saMsiddhaM brahmaNo yadA ॥ tadaMDe supravRddho 'bhUtkSetrajJo brahmasaMjJitaH ॥ 21 ॥
When thus the activities of Brahmā are fulfilled Brahmā becomes flourished in that Egg.

स वै शरीरी प्रथमः स वै पुरुष उच्यते ॥ आदिकर्ता स भूतानां ब्रह्माग्रे समवर्तत ॥ २२ ॥
sa vai zarIrI prathamaH sa vai puruSa ucyate ॥ AdikartA sa bhUtAnAM brahmAgre samavartata ॥ 22 ॥
He is the first embodied soul, called Puruṣa. He is the first creator of living beings. Brahmā thus existed in the beginning.

तस्येश्वरस्य प्रतिमा ज्ञानवैराग्यलक्षणा ॥ धर्मैश्वर्यकरी बुद्धिर्ब्राह्मी यज्ञे ऽभिमानिनः ॥ २३ ॥
tasyezvarasya pratimA jJAnavairAgyalakSaNA ॥ dharmaizvaryakarI buddhirbrAhmI yajJe 'bhimAninaH ॥ 23 ॥
From him was born the intellect, the cause of virtue and prosperity, with the characteristics of wisdom and detachment.

अव्यक्ताज्जायते तस्य मनसा यद्यदीप्सितम् ॥ वशी विकृत्वात्त्रैगुण्यात्सापेक्षत्वात्स्वभावतः ॥ २४ ॥
avyaktAjjAyate tasya manasA yadyadIpsitam ॥ vazI vikRtvAttraiguNyAtsApekSatvAtsvabhAvataH ॥ 24 ॥
Whatever is desired by the mind is born from the unmanifest. Because of the distortion of the submissive, because of the threefold nature, because of its relativity.

त्रिधा विभज्य चात्मानं त्रैलोक्ये संप्रवर्तते ॥ सृजते ग्रसते चैव वीक्षते च त्रिभिस्स्वयम् ॥ २५ ॥
tridhA vibhajya cAtmAnaM trailokye saMpravartate ॥ sRjate grasate caiva vIkSate ca tribhissvayam ॥ 25 ॥
After dividing the material body into three parts, the living entity moves about in the three worlds. He creates, devours and observes by Himself in three ways.

चतुर्मुखस्तु ब्रह्मत्वे कालत्वे चांतकस्स्मृतः ॥ सहस्रमूर्धा पुरुषस्तिस्रोवस्थास्स्वयंभुवः ॥ २६ ॥
caturmukhastu brahmatve kAlatve cAMtakassmRtaH ॥ sahasramUrdhA puruSastisrovasthAssvayaMbhuvaH ॥ 26 ॥
He is four-faced as creator; as destroyer he is Kāla and as Puruṣa he has thousand heads. The self-born has thus three states.

सत्त्वं रजश्च ब्रह्मा च कालत्वे च तमो रजः ॥ विष्णुत्वे केवलं सत्त्वं गुणवृद्धिस्त्रिधा विभौ ॥ २७ ॥
sattvaM rajazca brahmA ca kAlatve ca tamo rajaH ॥ viSNutve kevalaM sattvaM guNavRddhistridhA vibhau ॥ 27 ॥
As Brahmā he has Sattva and Rajas, as Kāla Tamas and Rajas, as Viṣṇu he has Sattva alone. Thus the increase of Guṇas in the lord is threefold.

ब्रह्मत्वे सृजते लोकान् कालत्वे संक्षिपत्यपि ॥ पुरुषत्वे ऽत्युदासीनः कर्म च त्रिविधं विभोः ॥ २८ ॥
brahmatve sRjate lokAn kAlatve saMkSipatyapi ॥ puruSatve 'tyudAsInaH karma ca trividhaM vibhoH ॥ 28 ॥
As Brahmā he creates the worlds, as Kāla he condenses; as Puruṣa he sustains; he is indifferent. Thus the activity of the lord is threefold.

एवं त्रिधा विभिन्नत्वाद्ब्रह्मा त्रिगुण उच्यते ॥ चतुर्धा प्रविभक्तत्वाच्चातुर्व्यूहः प्रकीर्तितः ॥ २९ ॥
evaM tridhA vibhinnatvAdbrahmA triguNa ucyate ॥ caturdhA pravibhaktatvAccAturvyUhaH prakIrtitaH ॥ 29 ॥
Since he is divided into three he is called Triguṇa. Since he has split himself into four he is glorified as Caturvyūha.

आदित्वादादिदेवो ऽसावजातत्वादजः स्मृतः ॥ पाति यस्मात्प्रजाः सर्वाः प्रजापतिरिति स्मृतः ॥ ३० ॥
AditvAdAdidevo 'sAvajAtatvAdajaH smRtaH ॥ pAti yasmAtprajAH sarvAH prajApatiriti smRtaH ॥ 30 ॥
Since he is the beginning he is called Ādideva; since he is unborn he is called Aja; since he protects the subjects he is called Prajāpati.

हिरण्मयस्तु यो मेरुस्तस्योल्बं सुमहात्मनः ॥ गर्भोदकं समुद्राश्च जरायुश्चाऽपि पर्वताः ॥ ३१ ॥
hiraNmayastu yo merustasyolbaM sumahAtmanaH ॥ garbhodakaM samudrAzca jarAyuzcA'pi parvatAH ॥ 31 ॥
The golden Meru is the foetus of that great Ātman; the oceans constitute the water of the womb and the mountains constitute the outer skin of the womb.

तस्मिन्नंडे त्विमे लोका अंतर्विश्वमिदं जगत् ॥ चंद्रादित्यौ सनक्षत्रौ सग्रहौ सह वायुना ॥ ३२ ॥
tasminnaMDe tvime lokA aMtarvizvamidaM jagat ॥ caMdrAdityau sanakSatrau sagrahau saha vAyunA ॥ 32 ॥
All these worlds in this universe, the moon, sun, stars, planets and Vāyu are in this cosmic egg.

अद्भिर्दशगुणाभिस्तु बाह्यतोण्डं समावृतम् ॥ आपो दशगुणेनैव तेजसा बहिरावृताः ॥ ३३ ॥
adbhirdazaguNAbhistu bAhyatoNDaM samAvRtam ॥ Apo dazaguNenaiva tejasA bahirAvRtAH ॥ 33 ॥
The egg is enveloped with waters ten times bigger than it. The waters are enveloped by Tejas ten times bigger.

तेजो दशगुणेनैव वायुना बहिरावृतम् ॥ आकाशेनावृतो वायुः खं च भूतादिनावृतम् ॥ ३४ ॥
tejo dazaguNenaiva vAyunA bahirAvRtam ॥ AkAzenAvRto vAyuH khaM ca bhUtAdinAvRtam ॥ 34 ॥
The Tejas is enveloped by Vāyu ten times bigger. Vāyu is enveloped by Ākāśa and Ākāśa is enveloped by Bhūtādi.

भूतादिर्महता तद्वदव्यक्तेनावृतो महान् ॥ एतैरावरणैरण्डं सप्तभिर्बहिरावृतम् ॥ ३५ ॥
bhUtAdirmahatA tadvadavyaktenAvRto mahAn ॥ etairAvaraNairaNDaM saptabhirbahirAvRtam ॥ 35 ॥
The Bhūtādi is enveloped by the Mahat. The Mahat is enveloped by Avyakta. Thus the egg is enveloped by even coverings.

एतदावृत्त्य चान्योन्यमष्टौ प्रकृतयः स्थिताः ॥ सृष्टिपालनविध्वंसकर्मकर्त्र्यो द्विजोत्तमाः ॥ ३६ ॥
etadAvRttya cAnyonyamaSTau prakRtayaH sthitAH ॥ sRSTipAlanavidhvaMsakarmakartryo dvijottamAH ॥ 36 ॥
O excellent brahmins, eight Prakṛtis, the causes of creation, sustenance and destruction are stationed covering each of these.

evaM parasparotpannA dhArayaMti parasparam ॥ AdhArAdheyabhAvena vikArAstu vikAriSu ॥ 37 ॥
Thus born of one another, the effects and their causes sustain one another supporting and being supported.

कूर्मोंगानि यथा पूर्वं प्रसार्य विनियच्छति ॥ विकारांश्च तथा ऽव्यक्तं सृष्ट्वा भूयो नियच्छति ॥ ३८ ॥
kUrmoMgAni yathA pUrvaM prasArya viniyacchati ॥ vikArAMzca tathA 'vyaktaM sRSTvA bhUyo niyacchati ॥ 38 ॥
Just as the tortoise spreads its limbs first and then withdraws them, so the Avyakta creates the beings and then withdraws them.

अव्यक्तप्रभवं सर्वमानुलोम्येन जायते ॥ प्राप्ते प्रलयकाले तु प्रतिलोम्येनुलीयते ॥ ३९ ॥
avyaktaprabhavaM sarvamAnulomyena jAyate ॥ prApte pralayakAle tu pratilomyenulIyate ॥ 39 ॥
Everything originating from Avyakta is born in this order. When the time of dissolution arrives it gets dissolved in the reverse order.

गुणाः कालवशादेव भवंति विषमाः समाः ॥ गुणसाम्ये लयो ज्ञेयो वैषम्ये सृष्टिरुच्यते ॥ ४० ॥
guNAH kAlavazAdeva bhavaMti viSamAH samAH ॥ guNasAmye layo jJeyo vaiSamye sRSTirucyate ॥ 40 ॥
The Guṇas become equal and unequal due to Kāla. Dissolution takes place when there is equilibrium of the Guṇas. When this is upset, creation takes place.

tadidaM brahmaNo yoniretadaMDaM ghanaM mahat ॥ brahmaNaH kSetramuddiSTaM brahmA kSetrajJa ucyate ॥ 41 ॥
Thus this egg, large and thick, is the source of origin of Brahmā. It is called Brahmā’s sphere; Brahmā is the lord of this.

itIdRzAnAmaNDAnAM koTyo jJeyAH sahasrazaH ॥ sarvagatvAtpradhAnasya tiryagUrdhvamadhaH sthitAH ॥ 42 ॥
There are thousands and crores of such eggs stationed at the sides, above and below since Pradhāna is present everywhere.

tatra tatra caturvaktrA brahmANo harayo bhavAH ॥ sRSTA pradhAnena tathA labdhvA zaMbhostu sannidhim ॥ 43 ।
In the different places there are four-faced Brahmas, Viṣṇus and Rudras created by Pradhāna with the presence of Śiva.

महेश्वरः परोव्यक्तादंडमव्यक्तसंभवम् ॥ अण्डाज्जज्ञे विभुर्ब्रह्मा लोकास्तेन कृतास्त्विमे ॥ ४४ ॥
mahezvaraH parovyaktAdaMDamavyaktasaMbhavam ॥ aNDAjjajJe vibhurbrahmA lokAstena kRtAstvime ॥ 44 ॥
The lord is beyond the manifest. The egg is born of the unmanifest. From that egg is born lord Brahmā and the worlds are created by him.

अबुद्धिपूर्वः कथितो मयैष प्रधानसर्गः प्रथमः प्रवृतः ॥ आत्यंतिकश्च प्रलयोन्तकाले लीलाकृतः केवलमीश्वरस्य ॥ ४५ ॥
abuddhipUrvaH kathito mayaiSa pradhAnasargaH prathamaH pravRtaH ॥ AtyaMtikazca pralayontakAle lIlAkRtaH kevalamIzvarasya ॥ 45 ॥
The primary creation of Pradhāna is without the intervention of the cosmic intellect. The ultimate dissolution is effected sportively by the lord alone at the end.

यत्तत्स्मृतं कारणमप्रमेयं ब्रह्मा प्रधानं प्रकृतेः प्रसूतिः ॥ अनादिमध्यान्तमनन्तवीर्यं शुक्लं सुरक्तं पुरुषेण युक्तम् ॥ ४६ ॥
yattatsmRtaM kAraNamaprameyaM brahmA pradhAnaM prakRteH prasUtiH ॥ anAdimadhyAntamanantavIryaM zuklaM suraktaM puruSeNa yuktam ॥ 46 ॥
What is called as the unmanifest cause is Pradhāna. Brahmā is the progeny of Prakṛti. The Pradhāna has neither beginning nor middle nor end. Its prowess is infinite. It is white and deep red. It is associated with Puruṣa.

उत्पादकत्वाद्रजसोतिरेकाल्लोकस्य संतानविवृद्धिहेतून् ॥ अष्टौ विकारानपि चादिकाले सृष्ट्वा समश्नाति तथांतकाले ॥ ४७ ॥
utpAdakatvAdrajasotirekAllokasya saMtAnavivRddhihetUn ॥ aSTau vikArAnapi cAdikAle sRSTvA samaznAti tathAMtakAle ॥ 47 ॥
When the Rajas predominates it becomes generative. It creates the eight secondary tattvas in the beginning, which cause flourishing of the worlds. In the end it devours them.

प्रकृत्यवस्थापितकारणानां या च स्थितिर्या च पुनः प्रवृत्तिः ॥ तत्सर्वमप्राकृतवैभवस्य संकल्पमात्रेण महेश्वरस्य ॥ ४८ ॥
prakRtyavasthApitakAraNAnAM yA ca sthitiryA ca punaH pravRttiH ॥ tatsarvamaprAkRtavaibhavasya saMkalpamAtreNa mahezvarasya ॥ 48 ॥
The stability and the subsequent operation of the causes projected by Prakṛti take place by the thought of supreme lord whose prowess is not effected by Prakṛti.
