मुनय ऊचुः ॥ कथं जगदिदं कृत्स्नं विधाय च निधाय च ॥ आज्ञया परमां क्रीडां करोति परमेश्वरः ॥ १ ॥
munaya UcuH ॥ kathaM jagadidaM kRtsnaM vidhAya ca nidhAya ca ॥ AjJayA paramAM krIDAM karoti paramezvaraH ॥ 1 ॥
The sages said:— How does lord Śiva perform his great sport commanding all, creating the universe and placing it in position?

किं तत्प्रथमसंभूतं केनेदमखिलं ततम् ॥ केना वा पुनरेवेदं ग्रस्यते पृथुकुक्षिणा ॥ २ ॥
kiM tatprathamasaMbhUtaM kenedamakhilaM tatam ॥ kenA vA punarevedaM grasyate pRthukukSiNA ॥ 2 ॥
What is it that came into being at the outset? By what are all these pervaded? By which being of huge belly is this swallowed?

वायुरुवाच ॥ शक्तिः प्रथमसम्भूता शांत्यतीतपदोत्तरा ॥ ततो माया ततो ऽव्यक्तं शिवाच्छक्तिमतः प्रभोः ॥ ३ ॥
vAyuruvAca ॥ zaktiH prathamasambhUtA zAMtyatItapadottarA ॥ tato mAyA tato 'vyaktaM zivAcchaktimataH prabhoH ॥ 3 ॥
Vāyu said:— Śakti came into being at the outset; with Śāntyatītapadā following. From Śiva in association with Śakti Māyā came into being and then the unmanifest from it.

शान्त्यतीतपदं शक्तेस्ततः शान्तिपदक्रमात् ॥ ततो विद्यापदं तस्मात्प्रतिष्ठापदसंभवः ॥ ४ ॥
zAntyatItapadaM zaktestataH zAntipadakramAt ॥ tato vidyApadaM tasmAtpratiSThApadasaMbhavaH ॥ 4 ॥
Śāntyatītapada originated from Śakti and from it Śāntipada; then the Vidyāpada; from it the Pratiṣṭhāpada came into being.

निवृत्तिपदमुत्पन्नं प्रतिष्ठापदतः क्रमात् ॥ एवमुक्ता समासेन सृष्टिरीश्वरचोदिता ॥ ५ ॥
nivRttipadamutpannaM pratiSThApadataH kramAt ॥ evamuktA samAsena sRSTirIzvaracoditA ॥ 5 ॥
Nivṛttipada originated from Pratiṣṭhāpada. Thus has been briefly described the creation induced by the lord.

आनुलोम्यात्तथैतेषां प्रतिलोम्येन संहृतिः ॥ अस्मात्पञ्चपदोद्दिष्टात्परस्स्रष्टा समिष्यते ॥ ६ ॥
AnulomyAttathaiteSAM pratilomyena saMhRtiH ॥ asmAtpaJcapadoddiSTAtparassraSTA samiSyate ॥ 6 ॥
The creation of these is in the inverse order; the annihilation is in the reverse order. There is a creator apart from and greater than what is indicated by these five Padas.

कलाभिः पञ्चभिर्व्याप्तं तस्माद्विश्वमिदं जगत् ॥ अव्यक्तं कारणं यत्तदात्मना समनुष्ठितम् ॥ ७ ॥
kalAbhiH paJcabhirvyAptaM tasmAdvizvamidaM jagat ॥ avyaktaM kAraNaM yattadAtmanA samanuSThitam ॥ 7 ॥
Hence the entire universe is pervaded by the five Kalās. Avyakta is the cause there but activitised by the Ātman.

महदादिविशेषांतं सृजतीत्यपि संमतम् ॥ किं तु तत्रापि कर्तृत्वं नाव्यक्तस्य न चात्मनः ॥ ८ ॥
mahadAdivizeSAMtaM sRjatItyapi saMmatam ॥ kiM tu tatrApi kartRtvaM nAvyaktasya na cAtmanaH ॥ 8 ॥
It is also agreed that the universe creates the end of the great and other distinct elements. But even there the doer is neither the unmanifest nor the self.

अचेतनत्वात्प्रकृतेरज्ञत्वात्पुरुषस्य च ॥ प्रधानपरमाण्वादि यावत्किञ्चिदचेतनम् ॥ ९ ॥
acetanatvAtprakRterajJatvAtpuruSasya ca ॥ pradhAnaparamANvAdi yAvatkiJcidacetanam ॥ 9 ॥
Because of the unconsciousness of nature and the ignorance of the soul As far as the principal atoms and so on are concerned, they are unconscious.

तत्कर्तृकं स्वयं दृष्टं बुद्धिमत्कारणं विना ॥ जगच्च कर्तृसापेक्षं कार्यं सावयवं यतः ॥ १० ॥
tatkartRkaM svayaM dRSTaM buddhimatkAraNaM vinA ॥ jagacca kartRsApekSaM kAryaM sAvayavaM yataH ॥ 10 ॥
The doer of that is seen by himself without any intelligent cause. And the universe is relative to the doer because it is a work with its components.

तस्माच्छक्तस्स्वतन्त्रो यः सर्वशक्तिश्च सर्ववित् ॥ अनादिनिधनश्चायं महदैश्वर्यसंयुतः ॥ ११ ॥
tasmAcchaktassvatantro yaH sarvazaktizca sarvavit ॥ anAdinidhanazcAyaM mahadaizvaryasaMyutaH ॥ 11 ॥
Therefore He who is powerful and independent is omnipotent and omniscient He is eternally immortal and endowed with great opulence.

स एव जगतः कर्ता महादेवो महेश्वराः ॥ पाता हर्ता च सर्वस्य ततः पृथगनन्वयः ॥ १२ ॥
sa eva jagataH kartA mahAdevo mahezvarAH ॥ pAtA hartA ca sarvasya tataH pRthagananvayaH ॥ 12 ॥
He is the creator of the universe and the great god Mahadeva The faller and the destroyer of all is therefore a separate consequence.

परिणामः प्रधानस्य प्रवृत्तिः पुरुषस्य च ॥ सर्वं सत्यव्रतस्यैव शासनेन प्रवर्तते ॥ १३ ॥
pariNAmaH pradhAnasya pravRttiH puruSasya ca ॥ sarvaM satyavratasyaiva zAsanena pravartate ॥ 13 ॥
The transformation of Pradhāna and the activities of the Puruṣa function at the bidding of the lord of truthful vow.

इतीयं शाश्वती निष्ठा सतां मनसि वर्तते ॥ न चैनं पक्षमाश्रित्य वर्तते स्वल्पचेतनः ॥ १४ ॥
itIyaM zAzvatI niSThA satAM manasi vartate ॥ na cainaM pakSamAzritya vartate svalpacetanaH ॥ 14 ॥
It is in the minds of the noble that this firm and permanent conviction finds a place. A being of meagre consciousness does not' resort to this side.

यावदादिसमारंभो यावद्यः प्रलयो महान् ॥ तावदप्येति सकलं ब्रह्मणः शारदां शतम् ॥ १५ ॥
yAvadAdisamAraMbho yAvadyaH pralayo mahAn ॥ tAvadapyeti sakalaM brahmaNaH zAradAM zatam ॥ 15 ॥
As long as the beginning of the universe continues until the great annihilation Even so, it is the whole of the hundred autumns of the Brahman.

परमित्यायुषो नाम ब्रह्मणो ऽव्यक्तजन्मनः ॥ तत्पराख्यं तदर्धं च परार्धमभिधीयते ॥ १६ ॥
paramityAyuSo nAma brahmaNo 'vyaktajanmanaH ॥ tatparAkhyaM tadardhaM ca parArdhamabhidhIyate ॥ 16 ॥
The unmanifest form of the Supreme Absolute Truth is known as Paramitāyuṣa. That is called the other and that half is called the other half.

परार्धद्वयकालांते प्रलये समुपस्थिते ॥ अव्यक्तमात्मनः कार्यमादायात्मनि तिष्ठति ॥ १७ ॥
parArdhadvayakAlAMte pralaye samupasthite ॥ avyaktamAtmanaH kAryamAdAyAtmani tiSThati ॥ 17 ॥
At the end of the next two and a half years, the universe is about to be annihilated. He takes the unmanifest as his own work and remains in himself.

आत्मन्यवस्थिते ऽव्यक्ते विकारे प्रतिसंहृते ॥ साधर्म्येणाधितिष्ठेते प्रधानपुरुषावुभौ ॥ १८ ॥
Atmanyavasthite 'vyakte vikAre pratisaMhRte ॥ sAdharmyeNAdhitiSThete pradhAnapuruSAvubhau ॥ 18 ॥
When the Avyakta abides in Ātman, when the effects have been withdrawn, Pradhana and Puruṣa stand on an equal footing.

तमः सत्त्वगुणावेतौ समत्वेन व्यवस्थितौ ॥ अनुद्रिक्तावनन्तौ तावोतप्रोतौ परस्परम् ॥ १९ ॥
tamaH sattvaguNAvetau samatvena vyavasthitau ॥ anudriktAvanantau tAvotaprotau parasparam ॥ 19 ॥
The two have the Guṇas of Tamas and Sattva, remaining on a par with each other. The two without the Guṇas being predominant are mutually interwoven.

गुणसाम्ये तदा तस्मिन्नविभागे तमोदये ॥ शांतवातैकनीरे च न प्राज्ञायत किंचन ॥ २० ॥
guNasAmye tadA tasminnavibhAge tamodaye ॥ zAMtavAtaikanIre ca na prAjJAyata kiMcana ॥ 20 ॥
In the equal and undivided state of Guṇas in the rise of darkness, when the wind was in full and the water was calm, there was nothing to be seen.

अप्रज्ञाते जगत्यस्मिन्नेक एव महेश्वरः ॥ उपास्य रजनीं कृत्स्नां परां माहेश्वरीं ततः ॥ २१ ॥
aprajJAte jagatyasminneka eva mahezvaraH ॥ upAsya rajanIM kRtsnAM parAM mAhezvarIM tataH ॥ 21 ॥
In this unconscious world there is only one Supreme Lord. Then he worshiped the supreme goddess Maheswari for the whole night.

प्रभातायां तु शर्वर्यां प्रधानपुरुषावुभौ ॥ प्रविश्य क्षोभयामास मायायोगान्महेश्वरः ॥ २२ ॥
prabhAtAyAM tu zarvaryAM pradhAnapuruSAvubhau ॥ pravizya kSobhayAmAsa mAyAyogAnmahezvaraH ॥ 22 ॥
On the day of Prabhātā, the two great sages appeared in the morning. Lord Mahadeva entered and stirred them by His magic power.

ततः पुनरशेषाणां भूतानां प्रभवाप्ययात् ॥ अव्यक्तादभवत्सृष्टिराज्ञया परमेष्ठिनः ॥ २३ ॥
tataH punarazeSANAM bhUtAnAM prabhavApyayAt ॥ avyaktAdabhavatsRSTirAjJayA parameSThinaH ॥ 23 ॥
Then at the bidding of Brahmā, the creation evolved out of the unmanifest that is the source of origin and the spot of merger for all living creatures.

विश्वोत्तरोत्तरविचित्रमनोरथस्य यस्यैकशक्तिशकले सकलस्समाप्तः ॥ आत्मानमध्वपतिमध्वविदो वदंति तस्मै नमः सकललोकविलक्षणाय ॥ २४ ॥
vizvottarottaravicitramanorathasya yasyaikazaktizakale sakalassamAptaH ॥ AtmAnamadhvapatimadhvavido vadaMti tasmai namaH sakalalokavilakSaNAya ॥ 24 ॥
Obeisance to him who is different from the worlds, in a fraction of whose Śakti everything terminates, whose will is ever variegated and wonderful far above that of the universe and whom those who know the path call the lord of the path—the Ātman.
