RSaya UcuH kena mAnena kAlesminnAyussaMkhyA prakalpyate ॥ saMkhyArUpasya kAlasya kaH punaH paramo 'vadhiH ॥ 1 ॥
The sages said:— By what unit is the duration of life calculated in Kāla? What is the upper limit of Kāla in the form of number?

vAyuruvAca ॥ AyuSo 'tra nimeSAkhyamAdyamAnaM pracakSate ॥ saMkhyArUpasya kAlasya zAMttvatItakalAvadhi ॥ 2 ॥
Vāyu said:— The basic unit of life is Nimeṣa. The upper limit is Śāntyatīta.

akSipakSmaparikSepo nimeSaH parikalpitaH ॥ tAdRzAnAM nimeSANAM kASThA daza ca paJca ca ॥ 3 ॥
The time taken for the winking of an eye is Nimeṣa. Fifteen such Nimeṣas constitute one Kāṣṭhā.

kASThAMstriMzatkalA nAma kalAMstriMzanmuhUrtakaH ॥ muhUrtAnAmapi triMzadahorAtraM pracakSate ॥ 4 ॥
Thirty such Kāsthās make one Kalā. Thirty Kalās make one Muhūrta. Thirty Muhūrtas make one day.

The month consists of two fortnights with thirty days and nights.

The month consisting of black and white is to be understood as the day and night of the fathers.

मासैस्तैरयनं षड्भिर्वर्षं द्वे चायनं मतम् ॥ लौकिकेनैव मानेन अब्दो यो मानुषः स्मृतः ॥ ७ ॥
mAsaistairayanaM SaDbhirvarSaM dve cAyanaM matam ॥ laukikenaiva mAnena abdo yo mAnuSaH smRtaH ॥ 7 ॥
Six months are considered to be the ayana, and two years are considered to be the ayana. The year which is considered to be a human being by the same worldly standards.

एतद्दिव्यमहोरात्रमिति शास्त्रस्य निश्चयः ॥ दक्षिणं चायनं रात्रिस्तथोदगयनं दिनम् ॥ ८ ॥
etaddivyamahorAtramiti zAstrasya nizcayaH ॥ dakSiNaM cAyanaM rAtristathodagayanaM dinam ॥ 8 ॥
This is the divine day and night, as the scriptures determine. The southern moon is the night and the east moon is the day.

मासस्त्रिंशदहोरात्रैर्दिव्यो मानुषवत्स्मृतः ॥ संवत्सरो ऽपि देवानां मासैर्द्वादशभिस्तथा ॥ ९ ॥
mAsastriMzadahorAtrairdivyo mAnuSavatsmRtaH ॥ saMvatsaro 'pi devAnAM mAsairdvAdazabhistathA ॥ 9 ॥
The divine month like the human month constitutes thirty days. The year of the gods constitutes twelve months.

त्रीणि वर्षशतान्येव षष्टिवर्षयुतान्यपि ॥ दिव्यस्संवत्सरो ज्ञेयो मानुषेण प्रकीर्तितः ॥ १० ॥
trINi varSazatAnyeva SaSTivarSayutAnyapi ॥ divyassaMvatsaro jJeyo mAnuSeNa prakIrtitaH ॥ 10 ॥
They lived for three hundred years and sixty thousand years. The divine year is to be understood as described by human beings.

दिव्येनैव प्रमाणेन युगसंख्या प्रवर्तते ॥ चत्वारि भारते वर्षे युगानि कवयो विदुः ॥ ११ ॥
divyenaiva pramANena yugasaMkhyA pravartate ॥ catvAri bhArate varSe yugAni kavayo viduH ॥ 11 ॥
The calculation of yugas is based on the divine unit of time. The wise understand that there are four Yugas in the land of Bhārata.

पूर्वं कृतयुगं नाम ततस्त्रेता विधीयते ॥ द्वापरं च कलिश्चैव युगान्येतानि कृत्स्नशः ॥ १२ ॥
pUrvaM kRtayugaM nAma tatastretA vidhIyate ॥ dvAparaM ca kalizcaiva yugAnyetAni kRtsnazaH ॥ 12 ॥
The first Yuga is Kṛta, then comes Tretā. Dvāpara and Kali are the other Yugas. These are the four Yugas.

चत्वारि तु सहस्राणि वर्षाणां तत्कृतं युगम् ॥ तस्य तावच्छतीसंध्या संध्यांशश्च तथाविधः ॥ १३ ॥
catvAri tu sahasrANi varSANAM tatkRtaM yugam ॥ tasya tAvacchatIsaMdhyA saMdhyAMzazca tathAvidhaH ॥ 13 ॥
Four thousand years constitute the Kṛtayuga. The period of four hundred years constitutes the intervening junction and a hundred year period constitutes Sandhyāṃśa (a subdivision of the junction).

इतरेषु ससंध्येषु ससंध्यांशेषु च त्रिषु ॥ एकापायेन वर्तंते सहस्राणि शतानि च ॥ १४ ॥
itareSu sasaMdhyeSu sasaMdhyAMzeSu ca triSu ॥ ekApAyena vartaMte sahasrANi zatAni ca ॥ 14 ॥
In the three other yugas, their Sandhyās and Sandhyāṃśas the thousands and the hundreds become reduced by one.

एतद्द्वादशसाहस्रं साधिकं च चतुर्युगम् ॥ चतुर्युगसहस्रं यत्संकल्प इति कथ्यते ॥ १५ ॥
etaddvAdazasAhasraM sAdhikaM ca caturyugam ॥ caturyugasahasraM yatsaMkalpa iti kathyate ॥ 15 ॥
Thus the twelve thousand years and the surplus period constitute a Caturyuga. A thousand Caturyugas constitute a Kalpa.

चतुर्युगैकसप्तत्या मनोरंतरमुच्यते ॥ कल्पे चतुर्दशैकस्मिन्मनूनां परिवृत्तयः ॥ १६ ॥
caturyugaikasaptatyA manoraMtaramucyate ॥ kalpe caturdazaikasminmanUnAM parivRttayaH ॥ 16 ॥
Seventyone Caturyugas constitute a Manvantara. In a Kalpa there are fourteen such Manvantaras.

एतेन क्रमयोगेन कल्पमन्वंतराणि च ॥ सप्रजानि व्यतीतानि शतशो ऽथ सहस्रशः ॥ १७ ॥
etena kramayogena kalpamanvaMtarANi ca ॥ saprajAni vyatItAni zatazo 'tha sahasrazaH ॥ 17 ॥
In this order, hundreds and thousands of such Kalpas and Manvantaras have passed by this time.

अज्ञेयत्वाच्च सर्वेषामसंख्येयतया पुनः ॥ शक्यो नैवानुपूर्व्याद्वै तेषां वक्तुं सुविस्तरः ॥ १८ ॥
ajJeyatvAcca sarveSAmasaMkhyeyatayA punaH ॥ zakyo naivAnupUrvyAdvai teSAM vaktuM suvistaraH ॥ 18 ॥
They are innumerable and hard to be known precisely. It is impossible to mention them in detail in the precise order.

कल्पो नाम दिवा प्रोक्तो ब्रह्मणो ऽव्यक्तजन्मनः ॥ कल्पानां वै सहस्रं च ब्राह्मं वर्षमिहोच्यते ॥ १९ ॥
kalpo nAma divA prokto brahmaNo 'vyaktajanmanaH ॥ kalpAnAM vai sahasraM ca brAhmaM varSamihocyate ॥ 19 ॥
A Kalpa constitutes a day of Brahmā of unmanifest origin. A thousand Kalpas make a year of Brahmā.

वर्षाणामष्टसाहस्रं यच्च तद्ब्रह्मणो युगम् ॥ सवनं युगसाहस्रं ब्रह्मणः पद्मजन्मनः ॥ २० ॥
varSANAmaSTasAhasraM yacca tadbrahmaNo yugam ॥ savanaM yugasAhasraM brahmaNaH padmajanmanaH ॥ 20 ॥
Eight thousand Brahmā years make one Brahmā Yuga. A thousand Brahmā Yugas make one Savana of Brahmā.

सवनानां सहस्रं च त्रिगुणं त्रिवृतं तथा ॥ कल्प्यते सकलः कालो ब्रह्मणः परमेष्ठिनः ॥ २१ ॥
savanAnAM sahasraM ca triguNaM trivRtaM tathA ॥ kalpyate sakalaH kAlo brahmaNaH parameSThinaH ॥ 21 ॥
Three thousand and three Savanas make the life time of Brahmā.

तस्य वै दिवसे यांति चतुर्दश पुरंदराः ॥ शतानि मासे चत्वारि विंशत्या सहितानि च ॥ २२ ॥
tasya vai divase yAMti caturdaza puraMdarAH ॥ zatAni mAse catvAri viMzatyA sahitAni ca ॥ 22 ॥
On that day fourteen Purandaras go to the city. Four hundred and twenty in a month.

अब्दे पञ्च सहस्राणि चत्वारिंशद्युतानि च ॥ चत्वारिंशत्सहस्राणि पञ्च लक्षाणि चायुषि ॥ २३ ॥
abde paJca sahasrANi catvAriMzadyutAni ca ॥ catvAriMzatsahasrANi paJca lakSANi cAyuSi ॥ 23 ॥
In one year there are five thousand forty-four lights. Forty thousand five lakhs in life.

ब्रह्मा विष्णोर्दिने चैको विष्णू रुद्रदिने तथा ॥ ईश्वरस्य दिने रुद्रस्सदाख्यस्य तथेश्वरः ॥ २४ ॥
brahmA viSNordine caiko viSNU rudradine tathA ॥ Izvarasya dine rudrassadAkhyasya tathezvaraH ॥ 24 ॥
Brahmā is one on the day of Lord Viṣṇu, and Lord Viṣṇu is one on the day of Lord Śiva. On the day of the lord Rudra is also the lord of the Sada.

साक्षाच्छिवस्य तत्संख्यस्तथा सो ऽपि सदाशिवः ॥ चत्वारिंशत्सहस्राणि पञ्चलक्षाणि चायुषि ॥ २५ ॥
sAkSAcchivasya tatsaMkhyastathA so 'pi sadAzivaH ॥ catvAriMzatsahasrANi paJcalakSANi cAyuSi ॥ 25 ॥
That number of Lord Śiva is directly the same as that of Sadaśiva. Forty thousand five lakhs in life.

तस्मिन्साक्षाच्छिवेनैष कालात्मा सम्प्रवर्तते ॥ यत्तत्सृष्टेस्समाख्यातं कालान्तरमिह द्विजाः ॥ २६ ॥
tasminsAkSAcchivenaiSa kAlAtmA sampravartate ॥ yattatsRSTessamAkhyAtaM kAlAntaramiha dvijAH ॥ 26 ॥
The soul of time is directly manifested by Lord Śiva in that universe. O brāhmaṇas whatever has been described in this world about the time of its creation.

एतत्कालान्तरं ज्ञेयमहर्वै पारमेश्वरम् ॥ रात्रिश्च तावती ज्ञेया परमेशस्य कृत्स्नशः ॥ २७ ॥
etatkAlAntaraM jJeyamaharvai pAramezvaram ॥ rAtrizca tAvatI jJeyA paramezasya kRtsnazaH ॥ 27 ॥
This interval of time is to be understood as the day of the Supreme Lord. The night is also to be understood as the whole of the Supreme Lord.

अहस्तस्य तु या सृष्टी रात्रिश्च प्रलयः स्मृतः ॥ अहर्न विद्यते तस्य न रात्रिरिति धारयेत् ॥ २८ ॥
ahastasya tu yA sRSTI rAtrizca pralayaH smRtaH ॥ aharna vidyate tasya na rAtririti dhArayet ॥ 28 ॥
The creation of the day and the annihilation of the night are called annihilation. One should hold that there is no day for Him and no night for Him.

एषोपचारः क्रियते लोकानां हितकाम्यया ॥ प्रजाः प्रजानां पतयो मूर्तयश्च सुरासुराः ॥ २९ ॥
eSopacAraH kriyate lokAnAM hitakAmyayA ॥ prajAH prajAnAM patayo mUrtayazca surAsurAH ॥ 29 ॥
This ritual is performed for the benefit of all the worlds. The subjects are the masters of the subjects and the idols of the gods and demons.

इन्द्रियाणीन्द्रियार्थाश्च महाभूतानि पञ्च च ॥ तन्मात्राण्यथ भूतादिर्बुद्धिश्च सह दैवतः ॥ ३० ॥
indriyANIndriyArthAzca mahAbhUtAni paJca ca ॥ tanmAtrANyatha bhUtAdirbuddhizca saha daivataH ॥ 30 ॥
The senses and the objects of the senses are the five great elements. Then the elements, the origin of the elements and the intellect, along with the deity.

अहस्तिष्ठंति सर्वाणि पारमेशस्य धीमतः ॥ अहरंते प्रलीयन्ते रात्र्यन्ते विश्वसंभवः ॥ ३१ ॥
ahastiSThaMti sarvANi pAramezasya dhImataH ॥ aharaMte pralIyante rAtryante vizvasaMbhavaH ॥ 31 ॥
All things exist in the day of the intelligent Lord of the Supreme Lord. At the end of the day they dissolve and at the end of the night the universe is created.

यो विश्वात्मा कर्मकालस्वभावाद्यर्थे शक्तिर्यस्य नोल्लंघनीया ॥ यस्यैवाज्ञाधीनमेतत्समस्तं नमस्तस्मै महते शंकराय ॥ ३२ ॥
yo vizvAtmA karmakAlasvabhAvAdyarthe zaktiryasya nollaMghanIyA ॥ yasyaivAjJAdhInametatsamastaM namastasmai mahate zaMkarAya ॥ 32 ॥
The Supreme Soul, the Supreme Soul, is the Supreme Soul of the universe. I offer my obeisances to that great Lord Śiva by whose command all this is done.
