brahamovAca yato vAco nivartaMte aprApya manasA saha ॥ AnaMdaM yasya vai vidvAnna bibheti kutazcana ॥ 1 ॥
Lord Brahmā said: When words cease to exist, they do not reach the mind. The bliss of which the learned is not afraid of anywhere.

यस्मात्सर्वमिदं ब्रह्मविष्णुरुद्रेन्द्रपूर्वकम् ॥ सह भूतेन्द्रियैः सर्वैः प्रथमं संप्रसूयते ॥ २ ॥
yasmAtsarvamidaM brahmaviSNurudrendrapUrvakam ॥ saha bhUtendriyaiH sarvaiH prathamaM saMprasUyate ॥ 2 ॥
From that Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Brahmā, Lord Viṣṇu and Lord Śiva were created. It is first born with all the senses of the beings.

kAraNAnAM ca yo dhAtA dhyAtA paramakAraNam ॥ na saMprasUyate 'nyasmAtkutazcana kadAcana ॥ 3 ॥
He is the creator of all causes and the meditator of the Supreme Cause. It is never born from anywhere else.

सर्वैश्वर्येण संपन्नो नाम्ना सर्वेश्वरः स्वयम् ॥ सर्वैर्मुमुक्षुभिर्ध्येयश्शंभुराकाशमध्यगः ॥ ४ ॥
sarvaizvaryeNa saMpanno nAmnA sarvezvaraH svayam ॥ sarvairmumukSubhirdhyeyazzaMbhurAkAzamadhyagaH ॥ 4 ॥
He is endowed with all opulence and is known as the Lord of all. Lord Śambhu in the midst of the sky should be meditated upon by all those seeking liberation.

yo 'gre mAM vidadhe putraM jJAnaM ca prahiNoti me ॥ tatprasAdAnmayAlabdhaM prAjApatyamidaM padam ॥ 5 ॥
It was he who created me at the outset as his son and gave me perfect knowledge. It was due to his grace that the lordship of the people was attained by me.

Izo vRkSa iva stabdho ya eko divi tiSThati ॥ yenedamakhilaM pUrNaM puruSeNa mahAtmanA ॥ 6 ॥
He is the lord who stands in heaven like the lofty stump of a tree; and by whom, by the Puruṣa, the great Ātman, all this is filled up.

He is active among the inactive creatures; he who being single himself creates many is Maheśvara.

jIvairebhirimAMllokAnsarvAnIzo ya Izate 1 ॥ ya eko bhAgavAnrudro na dvitIyo 'sti kazcana ॥ 8 ॥
He rules over all the worlds through the Jīvas. He is the only lord Rudra. There is none second to him.

sadA janAnAM hRdaye saMniviSTo 'pi yaH paraiH ॥ alakSyo lakSayanvizvamadhitiSThati sarvadA ॥ 9 ॥
Though he has entered and is ever present in the hearts of the people he is invisible to others; he occupies and views at the universe always.

yastu kAlAtpramuktAni kAraNAnyakhilAnyapi ॥ anantazaktirevaiko bhagavAnadhitiSThati ॥ 10 ॥
He is the sole lord of infinite Śakti who presides over all causes and is released from Time—Death.

न यस्य दिवसो रात्रिर्न समानो न चाधिकः ॥ स्वभाविकी पराशक्तिर्नित्या ज्ञानक्रिये अपि ॥ ११ ॥
na yasya divaso rAtrirna samAno na cAdhikaH ॥ svabhAvikI parAzaktirnityA jJAnakriye api ॥ 11 ॥
He has neither day nor night; neither equals nor superiors. The great knowledge and activity is innate in him.

यदिदं क्षरमव्यक्तं यदप्यमृतमक्षरम् ॥ तावुभावक्षरात्मानावेको देवः स्वयं हरः ॥ १२ ॥
yadidaM kSaramavyaktaM yadapyamRtamakSaram ॥ tAvubhAvakSarAtmAnAveko devaH svayaM haraH ॥ 12 ॥
That which is perishable and unmanifest, that which is imperishable and immortal—both these have the imperishable as their Ātman. The sole lord is Śiva himself.

ईशते तदभिध्यानाद्योजनासत्त्वभावनः ॥ भूयो ह्यस्य पशोरन्ते विश्वमाया निवर्तते ॥ १३ ॥
Izate tadabhidhyAnAdyojanAsattvabhAvanaH ॥ bhUyo hyasya pazorante vizvamAyA nivartate ॥ 13 ॥
By concentrating on him, the person of Sāttvaic feelings becomes the lord himself. At the end the universal illusion recedes from him.

यस्मिन्न भासते विद्युन्न सूर्यो न च चन्द्रमाः ॥ यस्य भासा विभातीदमित्येषा शाश्वती श्रुतिः ॥ १४ ॥
yasminna bhAsate vidyunna sUryo na ca candramAH ॥ yasya bhAsA vibhAtIdamityeSA zAzvatI zrutiH ॥ 14 ॥
The eternal Śruti says “In whom neither the lightning flashes nor the sun blazes nor the moon sheds light and by whose brilliance this universe comes in the limelight.”

एको देवो महादेवो विज्ञेयस्तु महेश्वरः ॥ न तस्य परमं किंचित्पदं समधिगम्यते ॥ १५ ॥
eko devo mahAdevo vijJeyastu mahezvaraH ॥ na tasya paramaM kiMcitpadaM samadhigamyate ॥ 15 ॥
That lord Śiva shall be realised. There is no other region greater than his worthy of attainment.

अयमादिरनाद्यन्तस्स्वभावादेव निर्मलः ॥ स्वतन्त्रः परिपूर्णश्च स्वेच्छाधीनश्चराचरः ॥ १६ ॥
ayamAdiranAdyantassvabhAvAdeva nirmalaH ॥ svatantraH paripUrNazca svecchAdhInazcarAcaraH ॥ 16 ॥
Hr is the cause. He has no beginning, no end. He is naturally purr, independent and perfect. The mobile and immobile beings are subservient to his will.

अप्राकृतवपुः श्रीमांल्लक्ष्यलक्षणवर्जितः ॥ अयं मुक्तो मोचकश्च ह्यकालः कालचोदकः ॥ १७ ॥
aprAkRtavapuH zrImAMllakSyalakSaNavarjitaH ॥ ayaM mukto mocakazca hyakAlaH kAlacodakaH ॥ 17 ॥
His body is not the creation of Prakṛti. He is glorious, devoid of examples and definitions. He is both the liberated and liberator. He is not influenced by Time. He is the activiser of time.

सर्वोपरिकृतावासस्सर्वावासश्च सर्ववित् ॥ षड्विधाध्वमयस्यास्य सर्वस्य जगतः पतिः ॥ १८ ॥
sarvoparikRtAvAsassarvAvAsazca sarvavit ॥ SaDvidhAdhvamayasyAsya sarvasya jagataH patiH ॥ 18 ॥
He has taken up residence above all. He is the repository of all. He is the knower of all. He is the lord of the universe comprising the sixfold path.

उत्तरोत्तरभूतानामुत्तरश्च निरुत्तरः ॥ अनन्तानन्तसन्दोहमकरंदमधुव्रतः ॥ १९ ॥
uttarottarabhUtAnAmuttarazca niruttaraH ॥ anantAnantasandohamakaraMdamadhuvrataH ॥ 19 ॥
He is the Being above all beings, one above the other. There is no being above him. He is the bee imbibing the honey of endless bliss.

अखंडजगदंडानां पिंडीकरणपंडितः ॥ औदार्यवीर्यगांभीर्यमाधुर्यमकरालयः ॥ २० ॥
akhaMDajagadaMDAnAM piMDIkaraNapaMDitaH ॥ audAryavIryagAMbhIryamAdhuryamakarAlayaH ॥ 20 ॥
He is an expert in solidifying the unsevered cosmic eggs. He is the ocean of benevolence, prowess, majesty and sweetness.

नैवास्य सदृशं वस्तु नाधिकं चापि किंचन ॥ अतुलः सर्वभूतानां राजराजश्च तिष्ठति ॥ २१ ॥
naivAsya sadRzaM vastu nAdhikaM cApi kiMcana ॥ atulaH sarvabhUtAnAM rAjarAjazca tiSThati ॥ 21 ॥
There is no object equal to him or excelling him. He stands as the unparalleled Emperor of all living beings.

अनेन चित्रकृत्येन प्रथमं सृज्यते जगत् ॥ अंतकाले पुनश्चेदं तस्मिन्प्रलयमेष्यते ॥ २२ ॥
anena citrakRtyena prathamaM sRjyate jagat ॥ aMtakAle punazcedaM tasminpralayameSyate ॥ 22 ॥
The universe is created by him indulging in wonderful activities. At the time of dissolution this gets dissolved in him.

अस्य भूतानि वश्यानि अयं सर्वनियोजकः ॥ अयं तु परया भक्त्या दृश्यते नान्यथा क्वचित् ॥ २३ ॥
asya bhUtAni vazyAni ayaM sarvaniyojakaH ॥ ayaM tu parayA bhaktyA dRzyate nAnyathA kvacit ॥ 23 ॥
The living beings are under his control. He is the employer of all. He is seen by great devotion and not otherwise.

व्रतानि सर्वदानानि तपांसि नियमास्तथा ॥ कथितानि पुरा सद्भिर्भावार्थं नात्र संशयः ॥ २४ ॥
vratAni sarvadAnAni tapAMsi niyamAstathA ॥ kathitAni purA sadbhirbhAvArthaM nAtra saMzayaH ॥ 24 ॥
Sacred rites, charitable gifts, penances and observances, these are advocated by people for the purification of emotions. There is no doubt in this.

हरिश्चाहं च रुद्रश्च तथान्ये च सुरासुराः ॥ तपोभिरुग्रैरद्यापि तस्य दर्शनकांक्षिणः ॥ २५ ॥
harizcAhaM ca rudrazca tathAnye ca surAsurAH ॥ tapobhirugrairadyApi tasya darzanakAMkSiNaH ॥ 25 ॥
Viṣṇu, I, Rudra, gods and Asuras are desirous of seeing him even today by performing great penances.

अदृश्यः पतितैर्मूढैर्दुर्जनैरपि कुत्सितैः ॥ भक्तैरन्तर्बहिश्चापि पूज्यः संभाष्य एव च ॥ २६ ॥
adRzyaH patitairmUDhairdurjanairapi kutsitaiH ॥ bhaktairantarbahizcApi pUjyaH saMbhASya eva ca ॥ 26 ॥
He is invisible to fallen wicked men, the despicable and the stupid. He is worshipped within and without by devotees and can be spoken to.

तदिदं त्रिविधं रूपं स्थूलं सूक्ष्मं ततः परम् ॥ अस्मदाद्यमरैर्दृश्यं स्थूलं सूक्ष्मं तु योगिभिः ॥ २७ ॥
tadidaM trividhaM rUpaM sthUlaM sUkSmaM tataH param ॥ asmadAdyamarairdRzyaM sthUlaM sUkSmaM tu yogibhiH ॥ 27 ॥
There are three kinds of material nature: gross, subtle and transcendental. The gross is visible to the immortals, beginning with us, but the subtle is visible to the yogis.

ततः परं तु यन्नित्यं ज्ञानमानंदमव्ययम् ॥ तन्निष्ठैस्तत्परैर्भक्तैर्दृश्यं तद्व्रतमाश्रितैः ॥ २८ ॥
tataH paraM tu yannityaM jJAnamAnaMdamavyayam ॥ tanniSThaistatparairbhaktairdRzyaM tadvratamAzritaiH ॥ 28 ॥
Beyond that is that which is eternal, blissful and inexhaustible. It is seen by those who are devoted to Him and who are devoted to Him and who observe that vow.

बहुनात्र किमुक्तेन गुह्याद्गुह्यतरं परम् ॥ शिवे भक्तिर्न सन्देहस्तया युक्तो विमुच्यते ॥ २९ ॥
bahunAtra kimuktena guhyAdguhyataraM param ॥ zive bhaktirna sandehastayA yukto vimucyate ॥ 29 ॥
Of what avail is much talk? Devotion to Śiva is the secret of secrets. He who is endowed with it becomes liberated. There is no doubt in this.

प्रसादादेव सा भक्तिः प्रसादो भक्तिसंभवः ॥ यथा चांकुरतो बीजं बीजतो वा यथांकुरः ॥ ३० ॥
prasAdAdeva sA bhaktiH prasAdo bhaktisaMbhavaH ॥ yathA cAMkurato bIjaM bIjato vA yathAMkuraH ॥ 30 ॥
Devotion is the result of grace and grace is the result of devotion just as the sprout comes out of the seed and produces the seed.

प्रसादपूर्विका एव पशोस्सर्वत्र सिद्धयः ॥ स एव साधनैरन्ते सर्वैरपि च साध्यते ॥ ३१ ॥
prasAdapUrvikA eva pazossarvatra siddhayaH ॥ sa eva sAdhanairante sarvairapi ca sAdhyate ॥ 31 ॥
The achievements of the individual are due to the grace of God. Lord alone is achieved in the end through all the means.

प्रसादसाधनं धर्मस्स च वेदेन दर्शितः ॥ तदभ्यासवशात्साम्यं पूर्वयोः पुण्यपापयोः ॥ ३२ ॥
prasAdasAdhanaM dharmassa ca vedena darzitaH ॥ tadabhyAsavazAtsAmyaM pUrvayoH puNyapApayoH ॥ 32 ॥
Virtue and holy rites constitute the means for the attainment of grace. That is indicated by the Vedas. By practising Dharma the sins and merits are levelled to equality.

साम्यात्प्रसादसंपर्को धर्मस्यातिशयस्ततः ॥ धर्मातिशयमासाद्य पशोः पापपरिक्षयः ॥ ३३ ॥
sAmyAtprasAdasaMparko dharmasyAtizayastataH ॥ dharmAtizayamAsAdya pazoH pApaparikSayaH ॥ 33 ॥
Contact with grace yields excellence of Dharma. After attaining this excellence the sins of the individual decline.

एवं प्रक्षीणपापस्य बहुभिर्जन्मभिः क्रमात् ॥ सांबे सर्वेश्वरे भक्तिर्ज्ञानपूर्वा प्रजायते ॥ ३४ ॥
evaM prakSINapApasya bahubhirjanmabhiH kramAt ॥ sAMbe sarvezvare bhaktirjJAnapUrvA prajAyate ॥ 34 ॥
When his sins decline through succession of births the devotion to Sarveśvara and Ambā is generated along with knowledge.

भावानुगुणमीशस्य प्रसादो व्यतिरिच्यते ॥ प्रसादात्कर्मसंत्यागः फलतो न स्वरूपतः ॥ ३५ ॥
bhAvAnuguNamIzasya prasAdo vyatiricyate ॥ prasAdAtkarmasaMtyAgaH phalato na svarUpataH ॥ 35 ॥
The grace of the lord varies in accordance with the purity of emotions. Due to grace, eschewment of rites results. Here the eschewment is of the fruits of rites and not the rites themselves.

तस्मात्कर्मफलत्यागाच्छिवधर्मान्वयः शुभः ॥ स च गुर्वनपेक्षश्च तदपेक्ष इति द्विधा ॥ ३६ ॥
tasmAtkarmaphalatyAgAcchivadharmAnvayaH zubhaH ॥ sa ca gurvanapekSazca tadapekSa iti dvidhA ॥ 36 ॥
As a result of the abandonment of the desire for the fruits of holy rites, the auspicious Śaivite virtues are attained. This is twofold: that dependent on the preceptor and that which is not.

तत्रानपेक्षात्सापेक्षो मुख्यः शतगुणाधिकः ॥ शिवधर्मान्वयस्यास्य शिवज्ञानसमन्वयः ॥ ३७ ॥
tatrAnapekSAtsApekSo mukhyaH zataguNAdhikaH ॥ zivadharmAnvayasyAsya zivajJAnasamanvayaH ॥ 37 ॥
That which is dependent on the preceptor is more important and hundred times more efficacious since in the Śaivite creed there is an association of Śaivite knowledge.

ज्ञनान्वयवशात्पुंसः संसारे दोषदर्शनम् ॥ ततो विषयवैराग्यं वैराग्याद्भावसाधनम् ॥ ३८ ॥
jJanAnvayavazAtpuMsaH saMsAre doSadarzanam ॥ tato viSayavairAgyaM vairAgyAdbhAvasAdhanam ॥ 38 ॥
In view of the knowledge the man sees the defects in the worldly existence (saṃsāra). Thereafter arises non-attachment to the sensual objects and thence Bhāva is attained.

भावसिद्ध्युपपन्नस्य ध्याने निष्ठा न कर्मणि ॥ ज्ञानध्यानाभियुक्तस्य पुंसो योगः प्रवर्तते ॥ ३९ ॥
bhAvasiddhyupapannasya dhyAne niSThA na karmaNi ॥ jJAnadhyAnAbhiyuktasya puMso yogaH pravartate ॥ 39 ॥
When Bhāva is attained the man becomes more inclined towards meditation than towards rituals. A man endowed with knowledge and meditation becomes engaged in Yoga.

योगेन तु परा भक्तिः प्रसादस्तदनंतरम् ॥ प्रसादान्मुच्यते जंतुर्मुक्तः शिवसमो भवेत् ॥ ४० ॥
yogena tu parA bhaktiH prasAdastadanaMtaram ॥ prasAdAnmucyate jaMturmuktaH zivasamo bhavet ॥ 40 ॥
Through Yoga arises the great, devotion and then grace of God. By means of the grace the creature is liberated and becomes equal to Śiva.

अनुग्रहप्रकारस्य क्रमो ऽयमविवक्षितः ॥ यादृशी योग्यता पुंसस्तस्य तादृगनुग्रहः ॥ ४१ ॥

Some soul may return after the enjoyment of heavenly region and then liberated. Still another soul may be liberated on its way.

Hence there is no stipulated mode or order in the attainment of liberation. The supreme bliss is in accordance with the knowledge and emotion and attained by the grace of the lord.

You should go to that place where Lord Viśveśa, who carries the Pinaka tree, is with his wife, Devī. The blessed Lord always enjoys Himself for the sake of showing mercy to His devotees.

sphaTikamayamahIbhRtpAdajAbhyazzilAbhyaH prasaradamRtakalpassvacchapAnIyaramyam ॥ atirasaphalavRkSaprAyamavyAlasattvaM tapasa ucitamAsInnaimiSaM tanmunInAm ॥ 63 ॥
This Naimiṣa forest was the fitting place for the penance of the sages. It was beautiful with nectarine clear water flowing from the bottom rocks of the crystalline mountain. It abounded in fruit-bearing trees and was free from beasts of prey.
