The sages said:— O blessed disciple of Vyāsa, O Sūta the most excellent among the knowers of the Purāṇas, we wish to hear some other story of the lord.

We wish to hear the most excellent sacred rites of Umā, the mother of the universe, those which were narrated to Vyāsa the great Ātman by Sanatkumāra.

सूत उवाच ॥ धन्या यूयं महात्मानो देवीभक्तिदृढव्रताः ॥ पराशक्तेः परं गुप्तं रहस्यं शृणुतादरात् ॥ ३ ॥
sUta uvAca ॥ dhanyA yUyaM mahAtmAno devIbhaktidRDhavratAH ॥ parAzakteH paraM guptaM rahasyaM zRNutAdarAt ॥ 3 ॥
Sūta said:— All of you are blessed great souls; steady in your devotional rites to the goddess. Now listen devotedly to the well-guarded secret of the great Śakti.

Vyāsa said:— O omniscient Sanatkumāra, O intelligent son of Brahmā, I wish to hear the wonderful holy rites of Umā.

kIdRkca lakSaNaM tasya kiM kRte ca phalaM bhavet ॥ priyaM yacca parAmbAyAstadazeSaM vadasva me ॥ 5 ॥
Please tell me what is pleasing to the great mother. What are its characteristics and on doing what can it be efficacious?

sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ dvaipAyana yadetattvaM rahasyaM paripRcchasi ॥ tacchRNuSva mahAbuddhe sarvaM me varNayiSyataH ॥ 6 ॥
Sanatkumāra said:— O Dvaipāyana of great intellect, listen to the full description I am going to give of the secret that you ask.

ज्ञानयोगः क्रियायोगो भक्तियोगस्तथैव च ॥ त्रयो मार्गास्समाख्याताः श्रीमातुर्मुक्तिमुक्तिदा ॥ ७ ॥
jJAnayogaH kriyAyogo bhaktiyogastathaiva ca ॥ trayo mArgAssamAkhyAtAH zrImAturmuktimuktidA ॥ 7 ॥
Three paths of the glorious mother have been narrated which yield both worldly pleasures and salvation. They are paths of knowledge, holy rites and devotion.

ज्ञानयोगस्तु संयोगश्चित्तस्यैवात्मना तु यः ॥ यस्तु बाह्यार्थसंयोगः क्रियायोगः स उच्यते ॥ ८ ॥
jJAnayogastu saMyogazcittasyaivAtmanA tu yaH ॥ yastu bAhyArthasaMyogaH kriyAyogaH sa ucyate ॥ 8 ॥
Jñānayoga is the union of the mind with the Ātman. The union with the external objects is called Kriyāyoga.

भक्तियोगो मतो देव्या आत्मनश्चैक्यभावनम् ॥ त्रयाणामपि योगानां क्रियायोगस्स उच्यते ॥ ९ ॥
bhaktiyogo mato devyA AtmanazcaikyabhAvanam ॥ trayANAmapi yogAnAM kriyAyogassa ucyate ॥ 9 ॥
Bhaktiyoga is the concept of the unity of the Ātman with the goddess. Of the three I mention Kriyāyoga in detail.

कर्मणा जायते भक्तिर्भक्त्या ज्ञानं प्रजायते ॥ ज्ञानात्प्रजायते मुक्तिरिति शास्त्रेषु निश्चयः॥ १०॥
karmaNA jAyate bhaktirbhaktyA jJAnaM prajAyate ॥ jJAnAtprajAyate muktiriti zAstreSu nizcayaH॥ 10॥
It is concluded in the sacred scriptures that devotion is generated by activities, knowledge is born of devotion, liberation is the result of knowledge.

प्रधानं कारणं योगो विमुक्तेर्मुनिसत्तम ॥ क्रियायोगस्तु योगस्य परमन्ध्येयसाधनम् ॥ ११॥
pradhAnaM kAraNaM yogo vimuktermunisattama ॥ kriyAyogastu yogasya paramandhyeyasAdhanam ॥ 11॥
O excellent sage, the chief reason of liberation is the Yoga. Kriyāyoga is the greatest means of liberation.

मायान्तु प्रकृतिं विद्यान्मायावि ब्रह्म शाश्वतम् ॥ अभिन्नं तद्वपुर्ज्ञात्वा मुच्यते भवबन्धनात् ॥ १२ ॥
mAyAntu prakRtiM vidyAnmAyAvi brahma zAzvatam ॥ abhinnaM tadvapurjJAtvA mucyate bhavabandhanAt ॥ 12 ॥
One shall know the Māyā as Prakṛti and the wielder of Māyā as the eternal Brahman. After realising the identity of the two one is released from the world by bondage.

यस्तु देव्यालयं कुर्यात्पाषाणन्दारवन्तथा ॥ मृन्मयं वाथ कालेय तस्य पुण्यफलं शृणु ॥ अहन्यहनियोगेन जयतो यन्महाफलम्॥ १३॥
yastu devyAlayaM kuryAtpASANandAravantathA ॥ mRnmayaM vAtha kAleya tasya puNyaphalaM zRNu ॥ ahanyahaniyogena jayato yanmahAphalam॥ 13॥
He who makes a temple of the goddess with stones and a wooden structure Or if it is made of clay, O time, hear of the merits of it. That great fruit which is obtained by conquering by day by day devotion.

प्राप्नोति तत्फलन्देव्या यः कारयति मन्दिरम्॥ सहस्रकुलमागामि व्यतीतं च सहस्रकम् ॥ तारयति धर्मात्मा श्रीमातुर्धाम कारयन् ॥ १४॥
prApnoti tatphalandevyA yaH kArayati mandiram॥ sahasrakulamAgAmi vyatItaM ca sahasrakam ॥ tArayati dharmAtmA zrImAturdhAma kArayan ॥ 14॥
He who builds a temple to the goddess obtains the fruits of that. I have come to a thousand families and a thousand have passed He saves the righteous by making the abode of the beautiful mother.

कोटिजन्मकृतं पापं स्वल्पं वा यदि वा बहु ॥ श्रीमातुर्मन्दिरारम्भक्षणादेव प्रणश्यति ॥ १५ ॥
koTijanmakRtaM pApaM svalpaM vA yadi vA bahu ॥ zrImAturmandirArambhakSaNAdeva praNazyati ॥ 15 ॥
The sins committed by a person in a crore of births, whether they be small or big, are quelled at the very moment when the foundation for temple of the glorious mother is laid.

nadISu ca yathA gaMgA zoNaH sarvanadeSu ca ॥ kSamAyAM ca yathA pRthvI gAMbhIrye ca yathodadhiH ॥ 16॥
Just as Ganga and Shona are in all rivers As the earth in forgiveness and as the ocean in depth.

ग्रहाणां च समस्तानां यथा सूर्यो विशिष्यते॥। तथा सर्वेषु देवेषु श्रीपराम्बा विशिष्यते ॥ १७ ॥
grahANAM ca samastAnAM yathA sUryo viziSyate॥। tathA sarveSu deveSu zrIparAmbA viziSyate ॥ 17 ॥
And of all the planets, as the sun is the most distinguished. Similarly, among all the gods, Sri Paramba is the most distinguished.

sarvadeveSu sA mukhyA yastasyAH kArayedgRham ॥ pratiSThAM samavApnoti sa ca janma nijanmani ॥ 18 ॥
She is the most important among all the deities. He who causes her temple to be built attains established power in every birth.

vArANasyAM kurukSetre prayAge puSkare tathA ॥ gaMgAsamudratIre ca naimiSe'marakaNTake ॥ 19 ॥
Varanasi Kurukshetra Prayaga and Pushkara On the banks of the Ganges and in the thorns of the immortals in Naimisha.

zrIparvate mahApuNye gokarNe jJAnaparvate ॥ mathurAyAmayodhyAyAM dvArAvatyAM tathaiva ca ॥ 20 ॥
O mountain of goddess of fortune, O most holy mountain of knowledge, O Gokarna. In Mathura in Ayodhya and in Dwaravati.

इत्यादि पुण्यदेशेषु यत्र कुत्र स्थलेऽपि वा ॥ कारयन्मातुरावासं मुक्तो भवति बन्धनात् ॥ २१ ॥
ityAdi puNyadezeSu yatra kutra sthale'pi vA ॥ kArayanmAturAvAsaM mukto bhavati bandhanAt ॥ 21 ॥
etc. in holy places wherever and whenever on the ground. By making his mother live there he is freed from bondage.

इष्टकानां तु विन्यासो यावद्वर्षाणि तिष्ठति ॥ तावद्वर्षसहस्राणि मणिद्वीपे महीयते ॥ २२ ॥
iSTakAnAM tu vinyAso yAvadvarSANi tiSThati ॥ tAvadvarSasahasrANi maNidvIpe mahIyate ॥ 22 ॥
He is honoured in the Maṇidvīpa for as many thousand years as the number of years the brickwork holds good.

प्रतिमाः कारयेद्यस्तु सर्वलक्षणलक्षिताः ॥ स उमायाः परं लोकं निर्भयो व्रजति धुवम् ॥ २३ ॥
pratimAH kArayedyastu sarvalakSaNalakSitAH ॥ sa umAyAH paraM lokaM nirbhayo vrajati dhuvam ॥ 23 ॥
He who makes idols with the full complement of characteristics fearlessly attains indeed the great, region of Umā.

देवीमूर्तिं प्रतिष्ठाप्य शुभर्तुं ग्रहतारके ॥ कृतकृत्यो भवेन्मर्त्यो योगमायाप्रसादतः ॥ २४ ॥
devImUrtiM pratiSThApya zubhartuM grahatArake ॥ kRtakRtyo bhavenmartyo yogamAyAprasAdataH ॥ 24 ॥
After installing the image of the goddess, in the auspicious stars, planets and the season, man becomes contented and blessed by the favour of the Yogamāyā.

ये भविष्यन्ति येऽतीता आकल्पात्पुरुषाः कुले ॥ तांस्तांस्तारयते देव्या मूर्तिं संस्थाप्य शोभनाम् ॥ २५ ॥
ye bhaviSyanti ye'tItA AkalpAtpuruSAH kule ॥ tAMstAMstArayate devyA mUrtiM saMsthApya zobhanAm ॥ 25 ॥
After installing an auspicious image of the goddess one can redeem the men of one’s family both of the past and the future.

त्रिलोकीस्थापनात्पुण्यं यद्भवेन्मुनिपुंगव ॥ तत्कोटिगुणितं पुण्यं श्रीदेवीस्थापनाद्भवेत् ॥ २६॥
trilokIsthApanAtpuNyaM yadbhavenmunipuMgava ॥ tatkoTiguNitaM puNyaM zrIdevIsthApanAdbhavet ॥ 26॥
O leading sage, by installing the goddess the merit derived is a crore times more than that derived by establishing the three worlds.

madhye devIM sthApayitvA paJcAyatanadevatAH ॥ caturddikSu sthApayedyastasya puNyaM na gaNyate ॥ 27॥
The merit cannot be calculated of the man who installs the Pañcāyatana deities with Ambikā in the centre and the other four in the four quarters.

विष्णोर्नाम्नां कोटिजपाद्ग्रहणेचन्द्रसूर्ययोः ॥ यत्फलं लभ्यते तस्माच्छतकोटिगुणोत्तरम् ॥ २८॥
viSNornAmnAM koTijapAdgrahaNecandrasUryayoH ॥ yatphalaM labhyate tasmAcchatakoTiguNottaram ॥ 28॥
By chanting the names of Vishnu in crores of times the eclipse of the moon and the sun The fruit obtained is a hundred crore times greater than that obtained.

शिवनाम्नो जपादेव तस्मात्कोटि गुणोत्तरम् ॥ श्रीदेवीनामजापात्तु ततः कोटिगुणोत्तरम् ॥ २९॥
zivanAmno japAdeva tasmAtkoTi guNottaram ॥ zrIdevInAmajApAttu tataH koTiguNottaram ॥ 29॥
By chanting the name of Lord Shiva it is a million times better than that. By chanting the names of Śrīdevī, one is more than a million times better than that.

देव्याः प्रासादकरणात्पुण्यन्तु समवाप्यते ॥ स्थापिता येन सा देवी जगन्माता त्रयीमयी ॥ ३०॥
devyAH prAsAdakaraNAtpuNyantu samavApyate ॥ sthApitA yena sA devI jaganmAtA trayImayI ॥ 30॥
By building a palace for the goddess one attains merit He established that goddess who is the mother of the universe and embodies the three Vedas.

न तस्य दुर्लभं किंचिच्छ्रीमातुः करुणावशात् ॥ वर्द्धते पुत्रपौत्राद्या नश्यत्यखिलकश्मलम् ॥ ३१॥
na tasya durlabhaM kiMcicchrImAtuH karuNAvazAt ॥ varddhate putrapautrAdyA nazyatyakhilakazmalam ॥ 31॥
Nothing is difficult for him because of the compassion of his mother Sri. Children and grandchildren increase and all fatigue is destroyed.

मनसा ये चिकीर्षंति मूर्तिस्थापनमुत्तमम् ॥ तेत्युमायाः परं लोकं प्रयान्ति मुनिदुर्लभम् ॥ ३२॥
manasA ye cikIrSaMti mUrtisthApanamuttamam ॥ tetyumAyAH paraM lokaM prayAnti munidurlabham ॥ 32॥
Even those who desire mentally the installation of the excellent image attain the great region of Umā inaccessible even to the sage.

क्रियमाणन्तु यः प्रेक्ष्य चेतसा ह्यनुचिन्तयेत् ॥ कारयिष्याम्यहं यर्हि संपन्मे संभविष्यति ॥ ३३॥
kriyamANantu yaH prekSya cetasA hyanucintayet ॥ kArayiSyAmyahaM yarhi saMpanme saMbhaviSyati ॥ 33॥
But he who sees what is being done and meditates on it with his mind. I will do it when it is possible for me to do it.

एवन्तस्य कुलं सद्यो याति स्वर्गं न संशयः ॥ महामायाप्रभावेण दुर्लभं किं जगत्त्रये ॥ ३४॥
evantasya kulaM sadyo yAti svargaM na saMzayaH ॥ mahAmAyAprabhAveNa durlabhaM kiM jagattraye ॥ 34॥
The family of Evanta will undoubtedly go to heaven immediately. What is rare in the three worlds by the power of the great illusory energy.

श्रीपराम्बाजगद्योनिं केवलं ये समाश्रिताः ॥ ते मनुष्या न मन्तव्यास्साक्षाद्देवीगणाश्च ते ॥ ३५॥
zrIparAmbAjagadyoniM kevalaM ye samAzritAH ॥ te manuSyA na mantavyAssAkSAddevIgaNAzca te ॥ 35॥
Those who have resorted only to the goddess the cause of the universe, are not ordinary men. They are the Gaṇas of the Goddess herself.

ये व्रजन्तः स्वपन्तश्च तिष्ठन्तो वाप्यहर्निशम् ॥ उमेति द्व्यक्षरं नाम ब्रुवते ते शिवागणाः ॥ ३६॥
ye vrajantaH svapantazca tiSThanto vApyaharnizam ॥ umeti dvyakSaraM nAma bruvate te zivAgaNAH ॥ 36॥
Those who repeat the two syllables “U-mā” day and night, sitting, sleeping or moving become Śivā’s Gaṇas.

नित्ये नैमित्तिके देवीं ये यजन्ति परां शिवाम्॥ पुष्पैर्धूपैस्तथादीपैस्ते प्रयास्यन्त्युमालयम् ॥ ३७॥
nitye naimittike devIM ye yajanti parAM zivAm॥ puSpairdhUpaistathAdIpaiste prayAsyantyumAlayam ॥ 37॥
Those who worship the goddess Śivā, with flowers, incense and lamps whether as daily routine or on special occasions due to certain reasons will attain Umā’s abode.

ये देवीमण्डपं नित्यं गोमयेन मृदाथवा ॥ उपलिंपन्ति मार्जन्ति ते प्रयास्यन्त्युमालयम् ॥ ३८॥
ye devImaNDapaM nityaM gomayena mRdAthavA ॥ upaliMpanti mArjanti te prayAsyantyumAlayam ॥ 38॥
Those who clean, scrub and smear the altar of the goddess with cowdung or clay will attain Umā’s abode.

यैर्देव्या मन्दिरं रम्यं निर्मापि तमनुत्तमम् ॥ तत्कुलीनाञ्जनान्माता ह्याशिषः संप्रयच्छति ॥ ३९॥
yairdevyA mandiraM ramyaM nirmApi tamanuttamam ॥ tatkulInAJjanAnmAtA hyAziSaH saMprayacchati ॥ 39॥
The goddess mother bestows her blessings on the family of the person who builds a beautiful temple for the goddess.

मदीयाः शतवर्षाणि जीवन्तु प्रेमभाग्जनाः॥ नापदामयनानीत्थं श्रीमाता वक्त्यहर्निशम्॥ ४०॥
madIyAH zatavarSANi jIvantu premabhAgjanAH॥ nApadAmayanAnItthaM zrImAtA vaktyaharnizam॥ 40॥
The glorious mother repeats day and night: “May my devotees live for a hundred years. Let them not be the victims of adversities.”

सौभाग्याय सदा स्त्रीभिः कार्य्यमेतन्महाव्रतम्॥ विद्याधनसुताप्त्यर्थं विधेयं पुरुषैरपि ॥ ८२ ॥
saubhAgyAya sadA strIbhiH kAryyametanmahAvratam॥ vidyAdhanasutAptyarthaM vidheyaM puruSairapi ॥ 82 ॥
This great vow should always be observed by women for good fortune Even men should do this for the sake of attaining knowledge, wealth and children.

umAmahezvarAdIni vratAnyanyAni yAnyapi ॥ devIpriyANi kAryANi svabhaktyaivaM mumukSubhiH॥ 83॥
Rites such as Umāmaheśvara and others are also pleasing to the goddess. They shall be performed devotedly by those who are desirous of salvation.

saMhiteyaM mahApuNyA zivabhaktivivarddhinI॥ nAnAkhyAnasamAyuktA bhuktimuktipradA zivA॥ 84॥
This compendium is highly meritorious, enhances devotion to Śiva. It is auspicious. It contains several anecdotes. It yields worldly pleasures and salvation.

ya enAM zRNuyAdbhaktyA zrAvayedvA samAhitaH ॥ paThedvA pAThayedvApi sa yAti paramAM gatim ॥ 85॥
He who listens to this with devotion or narrates it piously or reads it himself or causes it to be read attains the supreme god.

yasya gehe sthitA ceyaM likhitA lalitAkSaraiH ॥ saMpUjitA ca vidhivatsarvAnkAmAnsa ApnuyAt ॥ 86॥
He who keeps this in his abode in the manuscript form written in beautiful hand and duly worships it attains all desires.

bhUtapretapizAcAdiduSTebhyo na bhayaM kvacita॥ putrapautrAdisampattiM labhatyeva na saMzayaH ॥ 87 ॥
There will be no fear from goblins, ghosts and other evil spirits at any place. Undoubtedly he will attain sons, grandsons and riches.
