munaya UcuH ॥ zrotukAmA vayaM sarve durgAcaritamanvaham ॥ aparaM ca mahAprAjJa tattvaM varNaya no'dbhutam ॥ 1॥
The sages said:— O intelligent one, all of us are anxious to hear the episode of Durgā every day. Please tell us another wonderful tale of the goddess.

zRNvatAntvanmukhAmbhojAtkathA nAnA sudhopamAH ॥ na tRpyati mano'smAkaM sUta sarvArthavittama ॥ 2 ॥
O Sūta, the most excellent of the story-tellers, we are not satiated even as we hear different nectarine stories narrated by you.

॥ सूत उवाच ॥ दुर्गमः प्रथितो नाम्ना रुरुपुत्रो महाबलः ॥ ब्रह्मणो वरदानेन चतस्रोऽलभत श्रुतीः ॥ ३ ॥
॥ sUta uvAca ॥ durgamaH prathito nAmnA ruruputro mahAbalaH ॥ brahmaNo varadAnena catasro'labhata zrutIH ॥ 3 ॥
Sūta said:— The most powerful son of Ruru, famous as Durgama secured the four Vedas as a result of the boon granted by Brahmā.

देवाजेयबलं चापि संप्राप्य जगतीतले ॥ करोति स्म बहूत्पातान्दिवि देवाश्चकम्पिरे ॥ ४॥
devAjeyabalaM cApi saMprApya jagatItale ॥ karoti sma bahUtpAtAndivi devAzcakampire ॥ 4॥
Securing this strength that cannot be thwarted even by the gods he wrought havoc on the earth, making the gods tremble in heaven.

सर्वा नष्टेषु वेदेषु क्रिया नष्टा बभूव ह ॥ ब्राह्मणाश्च दुराचारा बभूबुस्ससुरास्तदा ॥ ५ ॥
sarvA naSTeSu vedeSu kriyA naSTA babhUva ha ॥ brAhmaNAzca durAcArA babhUbussasurAstadA ॥ 5 ॥
When the Vedas were destroyed the sacred rites were ruined. Brahmins and the gods fell off from their right conduct.

न दानं न तपोऽत्युग्रं न यागो हवनं न हि ॥ अनावृष्टिस्ततो जाता पृथिव्यां शतवार्षिकी ॥ ६॥
na dAnaM na tapo'tyugraM na yAgo havanaM na hi ॥ anAvRSTistato jAtA pRthivyAM zatavArSikI ॥ 6॥
None offered charitable gifts; none performed penances; there was neither worship nor sacrifice. Then a great drought befell the earth extending to a period of a hundred years.

hAhAkAro mahAnAsIttriSu lokeSu duHkhitAH ॥ abhavaMzca janAssarve kSuttRDbhyAM pIDitA bhRzam ॥ 7 ॥
There was a great hue and cry in all the three worlds. The people felt miserable being afflicted by hunger and thirst.

Rivers, oceans, tanks, wells and lakes dried. Trees and plants withered.

tato dRSTvA madAdduHkhaM prajAnAM dInacetasAm ॥ tridazAzzaraNaM yAtA yogamAyAM mahezvarIm ॥ 9 ॥
On seeing the misery of the distressed subjects the gods sought refuge in the Yogic Māyā, Maheśvarī.

devA UcuH ॥ rakSarakSa mahAmAye svakIyAssakalAH prajAH ॥ kopaM saMhara nUnantvaM lokA naMkSyaMti vAnyathA ॥ 10 ॥
The gods said— O Mahāmāyā, save all your people. Check your fury or the worlds will be ruined.

kathA zuMbhohato daityo nizuMbhazca mahAbalaH ॥ dhUmrAkSazcaNDamuNDau ca raktabIjo mahAbalaH ॥ 11 ॥
The story of the demon killed by Shumbha and the mighty Nishumbha He had smoky eyes and a fierce beard and was very strong with red seeds.

स मधुः कैटभो दैत्यो महिषासुर एव च ॥ तथैवामुं कृपासिन्धो दीनबन्धो जहि द्रुतम् ॥ १२ ॥
sa madhuH kaiTabho daityo mahiSAsura eva ca ॥ tathaivAmuM kRpAsindho dInabandho jahi drutam ॥ 12 ॥
That honey is the demon Kaitabha and the buffalo demon In the same way, O sea of mercy, O friend of the poor, kill him quickly.

aparAdho bhavatyeva bAlakAnAM pade pade ॥ sahate ko jano loke kevalaM mAtaraM vinA ॥ 13 ॥
Boys are guilty of offence at every step but who on earth brooks it except the mother?

yadAyadAbhavadduHkha devAnAM brahmaNAntathA ॥ tadAtadAvatIryAzu kuruSe sukhino janAn ॥ 14 ॥
When miseries afflict the gods and the brahmins you incarnate for the welfare of the people.

इति विक्लवितन्तेषां समाकर्ण्य कृपामयी ॥ अनन्ताक्षमयं रूपन्दर्शयामास साम्प्रतम् ॥ १५ ॥
iti viklavitanteSAM samAkarNya kRpAmayI ॥ anantAkSamayaM rUpandarzayAmAsa sAmpratam ॥ 15 ॥
On hearing the distress of the gods the merciful goddess revealed to them her form possessed of many eyes.

dhanurbANau tathA padma nAnAmUlaphalAni ca ॥ caturbhirdadhatI hastaiH prasannamukhapaGkajA॥ 16॥
The goddess with her lotus-face beaming with delight held in her four hands the bow, the arrows, the lotus and different fruits and roots.

tato dRSTvA prajAstaptAH karuNApUritekSaNA॥ ruroda nava ghasrANi nava rAtrIssamAkulA ॥ 17 ॥
On seeing her people scorched and distressed, the goddess was dejected. With her eyes full of mercy she cried for nine days and nights.

मोचयामास दृष्टिभ्यो वारिधाराः सहस्रशः ॥ ताभिः प्रतर्प्पिता लोका औषध्यः सकला अपि ॥ १८ ॥
mocayAmAsa dRSTibhyo vAridhArAH sahasrazaH ॥ tAbhiH pratarppitA lokA auSadhyaH sakalA api ॥ 18 ॥
The tears took the forms of thousands of water-currents released from her eyes. The worlds, the plants and medicinal herbs were delighted by them.

अगाधतोयास्सरितो बभूवुः सागरा अपि ॥ रुरुहुर्धरणीपृष्ठे शाकमूलफलानि च ॥ १९ ॥
agAdhatoyAssarito babhUvuH sAgarA api ॥ ruruhurdharaNIpRSThe zAkamUlaphalAni ca ॥ 19 ॥
They turned into the rivers and oceans of deep waters. Vegetables, roots and fruits grew on the earth.

विततार करस्थानि सुमनोभ्यः फलानि च ॥ गोभ्यस्तृणानि रम्याणि तथान्येभ्यो यथार्हतः ॥ २०॥
vitatAra karasthAni sumanobhyaH phalAni ca ॥ gobhyastRNAni ramyANi tathAnyebhyo yathArhataH ॥ 20॥
To the learned and the gods she distributed the fruits in her hands. To the cows she gave the tender blades of grass and to others the things they deserved.

सन्तुष्टा अभवन्सर्वे सदैव द्विजमानुषाः ॥ ततो जगाद सा देवी किमन्यत्करवाणि वः ॥ २१॥
santuSTA abhavansarve sadaiva dvijamAnuSAH ॥ tato jagAda sA devI kimanyatkaravANi vaH ॥ 21॥
All including the gods, brahmins and men were satisfied. Then the goddess said—“What else shall I do for you?”

समेत्योचुस्तदा देवा भवत्या तोषिता जनाः ॥ वेदान्देहि कृपां कृत्वा दुर्गमेण समाहृताम् ॥ २२॥
sametyocustadA devA bhavatyA toSitA janAH ॥ vedAndehi kRpAM kRtvA durgameNa samAhRtAm ॥ 22॥
The gods then gathered together and said, “The people have been rendered happy and satisfied. O goddess, be pleased and redeem the Vedas taken by Durgama.”

तथास्त्विति प्रभाष्याह यातयात निजालयम् ॥ वितरिष्यामि वो वेदानचिरेणैव कालतः ॥ २३॥
tathAstviti prabhASyAha yAtayAta nijAlayam ॥ vitariSyAmi vo vedAnacireNaiva kAlataH ॥ 23॥
After saying “So be it” she said. “Go ye all to your abodes. Ere long I shall give you the Vedas.”

ततः प्रमुदिता देवास्स्वं स्वं धाम समाययुः ॥ सुप्रणम्य जगद्योनिं फुल्लेन्दीवरलोचनाम् ॥ २४ ॥
tataH pramuditA devAssvaM svaM dhAma samAyayuH ॥ supraNamya jagadyoniM phullendIvaralocanAm ॥ 24 ॥
Then the joyous gods returned to their abodes after bowing to the goddess the cause of the universe with her eyes that resembled full-blown blue lotus.

ततः कोलाहलो जातो दिवि भूम्यन्तरिक्षके ॥ तच्छ्रुत्वा रौरवः सद्यो न्यरुणत्सर्वतः पुरीम् ॥ २५॥
tataH kolAhalo jAto divi bhUmyantarikSake ॥ tacchrutvA rauravaH sadyo nyaruNatsarvataH purIm ॥ 25॥
Then a great bustle arose in the three regions heaven, earth and sky. On hearing it the son of Ruru besieged the city immediately.

ततस्तेजोमयं चक्रं विधाय परितः शिवा ॥ रक्षणार्थं देवतानां स्वयं तस्माद्बहिर्गता ॥ २६ ॥
tatastejomayaM cakraM vidhAya paritaH zivA ॥ rakSaNArthaM devatAnAM svayaM tasmAdbahirgatA ॥ 26 ॥
Then after creating a big circle of splendour all round for the protection of the gods, Śivā herself came out of it.

ततः समभवयुद्धं देव्या दैत्यस्य चोभयोः ॥ ववृषुः समरे बाणान्निशितान्कंकटच्छिदः ॥ २७ ॥
tataH samabhavayuddhaM devyA daityasya cobhayoH ॥ vavRSuH samare bANAnnizitAnkaMkaTacchidaH ॥ 27 ॥
A great battle ensued between the goddess and the Daitya. Both showered arrows in the battle, piercing the armour of each other.

एतस्मिन्नंतरे तस्याः शरीराद्रम्यमूर्त्तयः ॥ काली तारा च्छिन्नमस्ता श्रीविद्या भुवनेश्वरी ॥ २८ ॥
etasminnaMtare tasyAH zarIrAdramyamUrttayaH ॥ kAlI tArA cchinnamastA zrIvidyA bhuvanezvarI ॥ 28 ॥
After this the beautiful figures appeared on her body Kali Tara Chhinnamasta Sri Vidya Bhuvaneshwari.

भैरवी बगला धूम्र श्रीमत्त्रिपुरसुदरी ॥ मातंगी च महाविद्या निर्गता दश सायुधाः॥ २९॥
bhairavI bagalA dhUmra zrImattripurasudarI ॥ mAtaMgI ca mahAvidyA nirgatA daza sAyudhAH॥ 29॥
Bhairavi Bagala Dhumra Srimattripurasudari ॥ Matangi, the great learned woman, came out with ten weapons.

असंख्यातास्ततो जाता मातरो दिव्यमूर्त्तयः ॥ चन्द्रलेखाधरास्सर्वास्सर्वा विद्युतत्समप्रभाः ॥ ३०॥
asaMkhyAtAstato jAtA mAtaro divyamUrttayaH ॥ candralekhAdharAssarvAssarvA vidyutatsamaprabhAH ॥ 30॥
Then appeared innumerable mothers of divine forms, wearing the digit of the moon and with a lustre resembling the splendour of lightning.

ततो मातृगणैर्युद्धं प्रावर्तत भयंकरम् ॥ रौरवीयं हतन्ताभिर्दलमक्षौहिणीशतम् ॥ ३१ ॥
tato mAtRgaNairyuddhaM prAvartata bhayaMkaram ॥ rauravIyaM hatantAbhirdalamakSauhiNIzatam ॥ 31 ॥
Then a terrible combat ensued between the Asuras and the mothers. The army of the son of Ruru, consisting of a hundred Akṣauhiṇīs was killed in the battle.

जघान सा तदा दैत्यं दुर्गमं शूलधारया ॥ पपात धरणीपृष्ठे खातमूलद्रुमो यथा ॥ ३२ ॥
jaghAna sA tadA daityaM durgamaM zUladhArayA ॥ papAta dharaNIpRSThe khAtamUladrumo yathA ॥ 32 ॥
Then the goddess struck Durgama with the edge of her trident. He fell on the earth like an uprooted tree.

इत्थं हत्वा तदा दैत्यं दुर्गमासुरनाम कम् ॥ आदाय चतुरो वेदान्ददौ देवेभ्य ईश्वरी ॥ ३३॥
itthaM hatvA tadA daityaM durgamAsuranAma kam ॥ AdAya caturo vedAndadau devebhya IzvarI ॥ 33॥
Thus after killing him the goddess redeemed the four Vedas and gave them to the gods.

देवा ऊचुः ॥ अस्मदर्थं त्वया रूपमनन्ताक्षिमयं धृतम् ॥ मुनयः कीर्तयिष्यन्ति शताक्षीन्त्वामतोऽम्बिके ॥ ३४ ॥
devA UcuH ॥ asmadarthaM tvayA rUpamanantAkSimayaM dhRtam ॥ munayaH kIrtayiSyanti zatAkSIntvAmato'mbike ॥ 34 ॥
The gods said:— O Ambikā, for our welfare that form of infinite eyes was assumed by you. Hence sages will glorify you as Śatākṣī.

आत्मदेहसमुद्भूतैः शाकैर्लोका मृता यतः ॥ शाकंभरीति विख्यातन्तत्ते नाम भविष्यति ॥ ३५ ॥
AtmadehasamudbhUtaiH zAkairlokA mRtA yataH ॥ zAkaMbharIti vikhyAtantatte nAma bhaviSyati ॥ 35 ॥
Since the worlds were sustained by you with vegetables sprouting from your body, you will be famous as Śākambharī.

दुर्गमाख्यो महादैत्यो हतो यस्मात्ततः शिवे ॥ दुर्गां भगवतीं भद्रां व्याहरिष्यंति मानवाः ॥ ३६ ॥
durgamAkhyo mahAdaityo hato yasmAttataH zive ॥ durgAM bhagavatIM bhadrAM vyAhariSyaMti mAnavAH ॥ 36 ॥
O Śivā, since you killed the Daitya Durgama you will be known as Durgā.

योगनिद्रे नमस्तुभ्यं नमस्तेऽस्तु महाबले ॥ नमो ज्ञानप्रदे तुभ्यं विश्वमात्रे नमो नमः ॥ ३७ ॥
yoganidre namastubhyaM namaste'stu mahAbale ॥ namo jJAnaprade tubhyaM vizvamAtre namo namaH ॥ 37 ॥
O Yogic slumber, O Mahābalā, O bestower of knowledge, O the mother of the universe, Obeisance be to you.

तत्त्वमस्यादिवाक्यैर्या बोध्यते परमेश्वरी ॥ अनन्तकोटिब्रह्माण्डनायिकायै नमो नमः ॥ ३८ ॥
tattvamasyAdivAkyairyA bodhyate paramezvarI ॥ anantakoTibrahmANDanAyikAyai namo namaH ॥ 38 ॥
Obeisance to the heroine of infinite universes known as the supreme goddess in the Mahāvākyas as Tattvamasi.

वाङ्मनःकायदुष्प्रापां सूर्यचन्द्राग्निलोचनाम् ॥ स्तोतुं न शक्नुमो मातस्त्व त्प्रभावाबुधा वयम् ॥ ३९ ॥
vAGmanaHkAyaduSprApAM sUryacandrAgnilocanAm ॥ stotuM na zaknumo mAtastva tprabhAvAbudhA vayam ॥ 39 ॥
O Mother, we who are unaware oi your power and greatness, cannot adequately eulogise you who are inaccessible through words, mind or body and whose eyes are the sun and the moon.

मादृशानमरान्दृष्ट्वा कः कुर्यादीदृशीन्दयाम् ॥ वर्जयित्वा सुरेशानीं शताक्षी मातरं विना ॥ ४० ॥
mAdRzAnamarAndRSTvA kaH kuryAdIdRzIndayAm ॥ varjayitvA surezAnIM zatAkSI mAtaraM vinA ॥ 40 ॥
Who else will bestow mercy on seeing us the gods except the great goddess Śatākṣī the mother?

त्रिलोकी नाभिभूयेत बाधाभिश्च निरन्तरम् ॥ एवं कार्यस्त्वया यत्नोऽस्माकं वैरिविनाशनम् ॥ ४१ ॥
trilokI nAbhibhUyeta bAdhAbhizca nirantaram ॥ evaM kAryastvayA yatno'smAkaM vairivinAzanam ॥ 41 ॥
Effort shall be made by you so that the three worlds will not be pestered continuously with obstacles and our enemies shall be destroyed.

देव्युवाच ॥ ॥ वत्सान्दृष्ट्वा यथा गावो व्यग्रा धावन्ति सत्वरम् ॥ तथैव भवतो दृष्ट्वा धावामि व्याकुला सती ॥ ४२ ॥

The gods said:— Just as the cows run about in excitement quickly on seeing their calves in distress, so also I, Satī, am excited on seeing you in distress and run about.

Again I shall take a terrible form and devour the Rākṣasas. I shall then be famous as Bhīmā Devī.

The goddess Śatākṣī, Śākambharī and Durgā are identical. In all the three the individual is the same.

There is no deity so compassionate as Śatākṣī the great goddess who cried for nine days on seeing her people scorched and distressed.
