munaya UcuH ॥ umAyA bhuvanezAnyAssUta sarvArthavittama ॥ avatAraM samAcakSva yato jAtA sarasvatI ॥ 1॥
The sages said:— O Sūta, the most excellent among the omniscients please mention the incarnation of Umā, the goddess of all the worlds and the mother of Sarasvatī.

या गीयते परब्रह्ममूलप्रकृतिरीश्वरी ॥ निराकारापि साकारा नित्या नन्दमथी सती ॥ २॥
yA gIyate parabrahmamUlaprakRtirIzvarI ॥ nirAkArApi sAkArA nityA nandamathI satI ॥ 2॥
She is sung as the primordial Prakṛti of the supreme Brahman. She is both possessed and devoid of forms. She is of the form of eternal bliss. She is Satī.

सूत उवाच ॥ तापसाः शृणुत प्रेम्णा चरित्रं परमं महत् ॥ यस्य विज्ञानमात्रेण नरो याति परां गतिम् ॥ ३ ॥
sUta uvAca ॥ tApasAH zRNuta premNA caritraM paramaM mahat ॥ yasya vijJAnamAtreNa naro yAti parAM gatim ॥ 3 ॥
Sūta said:— O sages, listen lovingly to the great story, the perfect knowledge of which alone helps man to attain the great goal.

देवदानवयोर्युद्धमेकदासीत्परस्परम् ॥ महामायाप्रभावेणामराणां विजयोऽभवत्॥ ४॥
devadAnavayoryuddhamekadAsItparasparam ॥ mahAmAyAprabhAveNAmarANAM vijayo'bhavat॥ 4॥
Once there was a clash between the gods and the Asuras. Thanks to the power of the goddess the gods became victorious.

Then the gods were proud and haughty. They boasted—“We are blessed. What can the Asuras do to us.

ये प्रभावं समालोक्यास्माकं परमदुःसहम् ॥ भीता नागालयं याता यातयातेति वादिनः ॥ ६ ॥
ye prabhAvaM samAlokyAsmAkaM paramaduHsaham ॥ bhItA nAgAlayaM yAtA yAtayAteti vAdinaH ॥ 6 ॥
Of our unbearable prowess, the Asuras are afraid. They have gone to Pātāla saying, “Run, run”.

aho balamaho tejo daityavaMzakSayaMkaram ॥ aho bhAgyaM sumanasAmevaM sarve'bhyavarNayan ॥ 7 ॥
Then all of them proclaimed thus: “Wonderful is the strength, splendour and good luck of the gods that has reduced the race of the Daityas.

तत आविरभूत्तेजः कूटरूपन्तदैव हि ॥ अदृष्टपूर्वं तद्दृष्ट्वा विस्मिता अभवन्सुराः ॥ ८॥
tata AvirabhUttejaH kUTarUpantadaiva hi ॥ adRSTapUrvaM taddRSTvA vismitA abhavansurAH ॥ 8॥
Then a mass of splendour appeared, at the unprecedented sight of which the gods were surprised.

किमिदं किमिदं चेति रुद्धकण्ठास्समब्रुवन ॥ अजानन्तः परं श्यामानु भावं मानभञ्जनम् ॥ ९॥
kimidaM kimidaM ceti ruddhakaNThAssamabruvana ॥ ajAnantaH paraM zyAmAnu bhAvaM mAnabhaJjanam ॥ 9॥
Ignorant of the real glory and the intention of the goddess to quell their arrogance, the Asuras said with choking throats “What is this? What is this?”

tata AjJApayaddevAndevAnAmadhinAyakaH ॥ yAta yUyaM parIkSadhvaM yAthAtathyena kinviti ॥ 10॥
Then the lord Indra ordered the gods—“Go ye all and examine it and ascertain what it is.”

सुरेन्द्रप्रेरितो वायुर्महसः सन्निधिं गतः ॥ कस्त्वं भोरिति सम्बोध्यावोचदेनं च तन्महः ॥ ११ ॥
surendraprerito vAyurmahasaH sannidhiM gataH ॥ kastvaM bhoriti sambodhyAvocadenaM ca tanmahaH ॥ 11 ॥
Urged by Indra, the wind-god approached splendour and addressed it, “Who are you?” The splendour too put the same question to him.

iti pRSTastadA vAyurmahasAtigarIyasA ॥ vAyurasmi jagatprANassAbhimAno'bravIdidam ॥ 12 ॥
Thus asked by the big mass of splendour the wind-god replied arrogantly.—“I am Vāyu the vital breath of the universe.”

जंगमाजंगमं सर्वमोतप्रोतमिदं जगत् ॥ मय्येव निखिलाधारे चालयाम्यखिलं जगत् ॥ १३ ॥
jaMgamAjaMgamaM sarvamotaprotamidaM jagat ॥ mayyeva nikhilAdhAre cAlayAmyakhilaM jagat ॥ 13 ॥
Everything in the universe, mobile or immobile, is woven like warp and woof into me. I am the support of everything. I move the entire universe.”

तदोवाच महातेजः शक्तोऽसि यदि चालने ॥ धृतमेतत्तृणं वायो चालयस्व निजेच्छया ॥ १४ ॥
tadovAca mahAtejaH zakto'si yadi cAlane ॥ dhRtametattRNaM vAyo cAlayasva nijecchayA ॥ 14 ॥
Then the great splendour said:—“If you are competent to move, O wind-god, please move this blade of grass I have set before you. Move it as you please.”

ततः सर्वप्रयत्नेनाकरोद्यत्नं सदागतिः ॥ न चचाल यदा स्थानात्तदासौ लज्जितोऽभवत ॥ १५॥
tataH sarvaprayatnenAkarodyatnaM sadAgatiH ॥ na cacAla yadA sthAnAttadAsau lajjito'bhavata ॥ 15॥
Then wind-god put forth all his efforts. But the blade of grass did not stir from its position. Then he was put to shame.

तूष्णीं भूत्वा ततो वायुर्जगामेन्द्रं सभां प्रति ॥ कथयामास तद् वृत्तं स्वकीयाभिभवान्वितम् ॥ १६॥
tUSNIM bhUtvA tato vAyurjagAmendraM sabhAM prati ॥ kathayAmAsa tad vRttaM svakIyAbhibhavAnvitam ॥ 16॥
The wind-god went silently to the assembly of Indra. There he narrated the details of his discomfiture.

सर्वेशत्वं वयं सर्वे मृषैवात्मनि मन्महे ॥ न पारयामहे किंचिद्वि धातुं क्षुद्रवस्त्वपि ॥ १७ ॥
sarvezatvaM vayaM sarve mRSaivAtmani manmahe ॥ na pArayAmahe kiMcidvi dhAtuM kSudravastvapi ॥ 17 ॥
“False is our pride that we are the lords. In fact we are helpless, insignificant creatures.”

ततश्च प्रेषयामास मरुत्वान्सकलान्सुरान् ॥ न शेकुस्ते यदा ज्ञातुं तदेन्द्रः स्वयमभ्यगात् ॥ १८ ॥
tatazca preSayAmAsa marutvAnsakalAnsurAn ॥ na zekuste yadA jJAtuM tadendraH svayamabhyagAt ॥ 18 ॥
Then Indra sent all the gods. When they could not realise anything Indra himself went there.

मघवन्तमथायान्तं दृष्ट्वा तेजोतिदुःसहम्॥ बभूवान्तर्हितं सद्यो विस्मितोऽभूच्च वासवः॥ १९॥
maghavantamathAyAntaM dRSTvA tejotiduHsaham॥ babhUvAntarhitaM sadyo vismito'bhUcca vAsavaH॥ 19॥
On seeing Indra come, the unbearable splendour vanished immediately. Indra was surprised.

चरित्रमीदृशं यस्य तमेव शरणं श्रये ॥ इति संचिन्तयामास सहस्राक्षः पुनःपुनः ॥ २० ॥
caritramIdRzaM yasya tameva zaraNaM zraye ॥ iti saMcintayAmAsa sahasrAkSaH punaHpunaH ॥ 20 ॥
Then Indra thought to himself again and again—“I seek refuge in him alone whose conduct is such as this.”

एतस्मिन्नंतरे तत्र निर्व्याजकरुणातनुः ॥ तेषामनुग्रहं कर्तुं हर्तुं गर्वं शिवांगना। ॥ २१ ॥
etasminnaMtare tatra nirvyAjakaruNAtanuH ॥ teSAmanugrahaM kartuM hartuM garvaM zivAMganA। ॥ 21 ॥
After this there was a merciful body without interest To show them mercy and to take away their pride, the goddess of fortune.

चैत्रशुक्लनवम्यां तु मध्याह्नस्थे दिवाकरे ॥ प्रादुरासीदुमा देवी सच्चिदानन्दरूपिणी ॥ २२ ॥
caitrazuklanavamyAM tu madhyAhnasthe divAkare ॥ prAdurAsIdumA devI saccidAnandarUpiNI ॥ 22 ॥
On the ninth day of the bright fortnight of Chaitra the sun is at noon The goddess Duma in the form of truth and bliss appeared.

महोमध्ये विराजन्ती भासयन्ती दिशो रुचा ॥ बोधयन्ती सुरान्सर्वान्ब्रह्मैवाहमिति स्फुटम् ॥ २३ ॥
mahomadhye virAjantI bhAsayantI dizo rucA ॥ bodhayantI surAnsarvAnbrahmaivAhamiti sphuTam ॥ 23 ॥
Shining among the mass of splendour she brightened the quarters with her brilliance. She enlightened the gods, saying “I alone am Brahman.”

चतुर्भिर्दधती हस्तैर्वरपाशांकुशाभयान् ॥ श्रुतिभिस्सेविता रम्या नवयौवनगर्विता ॥ २४॥
caturbhirdadhatI hastairvarapAzAMkuzAbhayAn ॥ zrutibhissevitA ramyA navayauvanagarvitA ॥ 24॥
In her four hands she held boons, noose, goad and the mystic gesture of protection. She was served by the Vedas and looked beautiful and proud of her blooming youth.

रक्ताम्बरपरीधाना रक्तमाल्यानुलेपना ॥ कोटिकंदर्प्पसंकाशा चन्द्रकोटिसमप्रभा। ॥ २५ ॥
raktAmbaraparIdhAnA raktamAlyAnulepanA ॥ koTikaMdarppasaMkAzA candrakoTisamaprabhA। ॥ 25 ॥
She wore red garments and red garlands. Red sandal paste was smeared over her body. She was as dazzling as a crore of cupids. Her lustre wṅs that of a crorc moons.

व्याजहार महामाया सर्वान्तर्य्यामिरूपिणी ॥ साक्षिणी सर्वभूतानां परब्रह्मस्वरूपिणी ॥ २६ ॥
vyAjahAra mahAmAyA sarvAntaryyAmirUpiNI ॥ sAkSiNI sarvabhUtAnAM parabrahmasvarUpiNI ॥ 26 ॥
The great Māyā, in the form of the immanent soul of all, the cosmic witness of all living beings, and the great Brahman, spoke.

उमोवाच ॥ न ब्रह्मा न सुरारातिर्न पुरारातिरीश्वरः ॥ मदग्रे गर्वितुं किंचित्का कथान्यसुपर्वणाम् ॥ २७ ॥
umovAca ॥ na brahmA na surArAtirna purArAtirIzvaraH ॥ madagre garvituM kiMcitkA kathAnyasuparvaNAm ॥ 27 ॥
Umā said:— Neither Brahma nor Viṣṇu nor Śiva the slayer of the Tripura demon can bluff before me. What about the other gods?

परं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिः प्रणवद्वन्द्वरूपिणी ॥ अहमेवास्मि सकलं मदन्यो नास्ति कश्चन ॥ २८ ॥
paraM brahma paraM jyotiH praNavadvandvarUpiNI ॥ ahamevAsmi sakalaM madanyo nAsti kazcana ॥ 28 ॥
The great Brahman, the great light in the form of the two Praṇavas, I alone am. I am all. There is none other beside me.

निराकारापि साकारा सर्वतत्त्वस्वरूपिणी ॥ अप्रतर्क्यगुणा नित्या कार्यकारणरूपिणी ॥ २९ ॥
nirAkArApi sAkArA sarvatattvasvarUpiNI ॥ apratarkyaguNA nityA kAryakAraNarUpiNI ॥ 29 ॥
Though devoid of form I possess forms. I constitute all principles. I am eternal and my attributes cannot be disputed. I am both the cause and the effect.

कदाचिद्दयिताकारा कदाचित्पुरुषाकृतिः ॥ कदाचिदुभयाकारा सर्वाकाराहमीश्वरी ॥ ३० ॥
kadAciddayitAkArA kadAcitpuruSAkRtiH ॥ kadAcidubhayAkArA sarvAkArAhamIzvarI ॥ 30 ॥
Sometimes I have the form of a woman, sometimes of a man. Sometimes both. I am goddess assuming all forms.

viraJciH sRSTikartAhaM jagatpAtAhamacyutaH ॥ rudraH saMhArakartAhaM sarvavizvavimohinI ॥ 31 ॥
I am the creator, the protector and the destroyer of the world. I am the enchantress of the universe.

कालिका कमलावाणी मुखास्सर्वा हि शक्तयः ॥ मदंशादेव संजातास्तथेमास्सकलाः कलाः ॥ ३२ ॥
kAlikA kamalAvANI mukhAssarvA hi zaktayaH ॥ madaMzAdeva saMjAtAstathemAssakalAH kalAH ॥ 32 ॥
All the Śaktis—Kālī, Lakṣmī and Sarasvatī as well as others are born of my parts. So also the arts originate from me.

मत्प्रभावाज्जितास्सर्वे युष्माभिर्द्दितिनन्दनाः ॥ तामविज्ञाय मां यूयं वृथा सर्वेशमानिनः ॥ ३३ ॥
matprabhAvAjjitAssarve yuSmAbhirdditinandanAH ॥ tAmavijJAya mAM yUyaM vRthA sarvezamAninaH ॥ 33 ॥
Due to my power alone the demons are conquered by you. Without knowing me of this nature you bluff as the lords of all.

यथा दारुमयीं योषां नर्तयत्यैन्द्रजालिकः ॥ तथैव सर्वभूतानि नर्तयाम्यहमीश्वरी ॥ ३४ ॥
yathA dArumayIM yoSAM nartayatyaindrajAlikaH ॥ tathaiva sarvabhUtAni nartayAmyahamIzvarI ॥ 34 ॥
Just as a magician makes the wooden doll of a woman dance so also I the goddess make all living beings dance.

मद्भयाद्वाति पवनः सर्वं दहति हव्यभुक्॥ लोकपालाः प्रकुर्वंति स्वस्वकर्माण्यनारतम् ॥ ३५॥
madbhayAdvAti pavanaH sarvaM dahati havyabhuk॥ lokapAlAH prakurvaMti svasvakarmANyanAratam ॥ 35॥
Being afraid of me the wind blows, the fire-god burns and the guardians of the quarters carry on their duties.

कदाचिद्देववर्गाणां कदाचिद्दितिजन्म नाम् ॥ करोमि विजयं सम्यक्स्वतन्त्रा निजलीलया ॥ ३६ ॥
kadAciddevavargANAM kadAcidditijanma nAm ॥ karomi vijayaM samyaksvatantrA nijalIlayA ॥ 36 ॥
Independent that I am, I sportively bestow victory on the gods sometimes and on the Daityas sometimes.

अविनाशि परं धाम मायातीतं परात्परम् ॥ श्रुतयो वर्णयन्ते यत्त द्रूपन्तु ममैव हि॥ ३७॥
avinAzi paraM dhAma mAyAtItaM parAtparam ॥ zrutayo varNayante yatta drUpantu mamaiva hi॥ 37॥
It is my form that is described in the Vedas as indestructible, the great abode, the one beyond Māyā and that which is greater than the greatest.

सगुणं निर्गुणं चेति मद्रूपं द्विविधं मतम् ॥ मायाशबलितं चैकं द्वितीयन्तदनाश्रितम् ॥ ३८ ॥
saguNaM nirguNaM ceti madrUpaM dvividhaM matam ॥ mAyAzabalitaM caikaM dvitIyantadanAzritam ॥ 38 ॥
My form is two-fold—Saguṇa and Nirguṇa. One is mixed with Māyā and the other is free from it.

एवं विज्ञाय मां देवास्स्वं स्वं गर्वं विहाय च ॥ भजत प्रणयोपेताः प्रकृतिं मां सनातनीम् ॥ ३९॥
evaM vijJAya mAM devAssvaM svaM garvaM vihAya ca ॥ bhajata praNayopetAH prakRtiM mAM sanAtanIm ॥ 39॥
O gods, endowed with devotion, realise this and eschew your arrogance, worship me, the eternal Prakṛti.

iti devyA vacaH zrutvA karuNAgarbhitaM surAH ॥ tuSTuvuH paramezAnIM bhaktisaMnatakandharAH ॥ 40 ॥
On hearing the merciful words of the goddess, the gods eulogised her, with their shoulders drooping with devotion.

क्षमस्व जगदीशानि प्रसीद परमेश्वरि ॥ मैवं भूयात्कदाचिन्नो गर्वो मातर्द्दयां कुरु ॥ ४१॥
kSamasva jagadIzAni prasIda paramezvari ॥ maivaM bhUyAtkadAcinno garvo mAtarddayAM kuru ॥ 41॥
O goddess of the universe, forgive us. O goddess, he pleased. O mother, let us not be arrogant again. Please be merciful.

tataHprabhRti te daivA hitvA garvaM samAhitAH॥ umAmArAdhayAmAsuryathApUrvaM yathAvidhi॥ 42॥
Since then the gods began to propitiate her as before. They eschewed their arrogance and became pure in mind.

iti vaH kathito viprA umAprAdurbhavo mayA ॥ yasya zravaNamAtreNa paramaM padamaznute॥ 43॥
O Brahmins, thus I have narrated to you the manifestation of Umā. By only hearing this men attain the great region.
