RSiruvAca ॥ AsIdraMbhAsuro nAma daityavaMzaziromaNiH ॥ tasmAjjAto mahAtejA mahiSo nAma dAnavaH ॥ 1 ॥
The sage said:— There was a demon Rambha who was the crest-jewel of the race of Daityas. From him was born Mahiṣa the Dānava of great splendour.

sa saMgrAme surAnsarvAnnirjitya danujAdhipaH ॥ cakAra rAjyaM svarloke mahendrAsanasaMsthitaH ॥ 2॥
That king of Dānavas defeated all the gods in battle and ruled over the kingdom of heaven seated on the throne of lord Indra.

The defeated gods sought refuge in Brahmā. With them Brahmā went to the place where Viṣṇu and Śiva were present.

tatra gatvA surAssarve natvA zaMkarakezavau ॥ svavRttaM kathAyAmAsuryathAvadanupUrvazaH ॥ 4 ॥
After reaching there and bowing to Śivā and Viṣṇu the gods narrated all their woeful tale in the proper order.

bhagavantau vayaM sarve mahiSeNa durAtmanA ॥ ujjAsitAzca svarlokAnnirjitya samarAMgaNe॥ 5 ॥
O lords, we are harassed by the wicked Mahiṣa. We have been ousted from heaven after our defeat in the battle-field.

bhramAmo martyaloke'sminna labhemahi zaM kvacit ॥ kAM kAM na durdazAM nItA devA indrapurogamAH ॥ 6 ॥
We are wandering in this world of mortals without peace or happiness anywhere. O what pitiable plights we—Indra and others—have been led to!

sUryAcandramasau pAzI kubero yama eva ca ॥ indrAgnivAtagandharvA vidyAdharasucAraNAH ॥ 7 ॥
The sun and moon are the ropes of Kubera and Yama Indra, Agni, Vata, Gandharvas, Vidyadharas and Sucharanas.

eteSAmapareSAM ca vidheyaM karma sosuraH ॥ svayaM karoti pApAtmA daityapakSa bhayaMkara ॥ 8 ॥
The duty of these and others is to be performed by the demon The sinful soul himself makes the wings of the demons terrible.

tasmAccharaNamApannAndevAnnastrAtumarhathaH ॥ vadhopAyaM ca tasyAzu cintayethAM yuvAM prabhU ॥ 9 ॥
Hence it behoves you to save us the gods who have sought refuge in you. O lords, please think of the means of killing him immediately.

iti devavacaH zrutvA dAmodarasatIzvarau ॥ cakratuH paramaM kopaM roSAghUrNitalocanau ॥ 10 ॥
On hearing the gods, Viṣṇu and Śiva were very angry. Their eyes rolled through anger.

tatotikopapUrNasya viSNozzaMbhozca vaktrataH ॥ tathAnyeSAM ca devAnAM zarIrAnnirgataM mahaH ॥ 11 ॥
Then a great splendour issued forth from the mouths of the infuriated Viṣṇu and Śiva and from the bodies of other gods.

The gods who were devoted to meditation on Durgā saw the mass of splendour blazing in all the ten directions.

That highly terrible splendour issuing forth from the bodies of the gods joined together and became a woman Mahiṣamardinī herself.

zaMbhutejasa utpannaM mukhamasyAH subhAsvaram ॥ yAmyena bAlA abhavanvaiSNavena ca bAhavaH ॥ 14॥
Her dazzlingly brilliant face constituted the splendour of Śiva, the hairs the splendour of Yama and the arms the splendour of Viṣṇu.

चन्द्रमस्तेजसा तस्याः स्तनयुग्मं व्यजायत॥ मध्यमे न्द्रेण जंघोरू वारुणेन बभूवतुः ॥ १५ ॥
candramastejasA tasyAH stanayugmaM vyajAyata॥ madhyame ndreNa jaMghorU vAruNena babhUvatuH ॥ 15 ॥
The moon gave birth to a pair of breasts with its effulgence In the middle the thighs were made by Indra and Varuna.

भूतेजसा नितंबोभूद्ब्राह्मेण चरणद्वयम् ॥ आर्केण चरणांगुल्यः करांगुल्यश्च वासवात्॥ १६॥
bhUtejasA nitaMbobhUdbrAhmeNa caraNadvayam ॥ ArkeNa caraNAMgulyaH karAMgulyazca vAsavAt॥ 16॥
The hips were made by the effulgence of the ghosts and the two feet by the Brahman. The toes of the feet and the fingers of the hands are from Indra by the arc.

kuberatejasA nAsA radanAzca prajApateH ॥ pAvakIyena nayanatrayaM sAndhyena bhrUdvayam ॥ 17॥
By the effulgence of Kubera the noses and tears of the creator Three eyes with fire and two eyebrows with twilight.

Anilena zravodvandvaM tathAnyeSAM svarokasAm ॥ tejasAM saMbhavaH padmAlayA sA paramezvarI ॥ 18॥
The duality of ears with the wind and the sound of other voices That goddess who is the source of the effulgence is the lotus flower.

tato nikhiladevAnAM tejorAzisamudbhavAm ॥ tAmAlokya surAssarve paraM harSaM prapedire ॥ 19॥
On seeing her thus formulated by the mass of splendour of the gods, they attained great delight.

निरायुधां च तां दृष्ट्वा ब्रह्माद्यास्त्रिदिवेश्वराः ॥ सायुधान्तां शिवां कर्तुं मनः सन्दधिरे सुराः ॥ २० ॥
nirAyudhAM ca tAM dRSTvA brahmAdyAstridivezvarAH ॥ sAyudhAntAM zivAM kartuM manaH sandadhire surAH ॥ 20 ॥
Observing that she had no weapons, Brahmā and other gods decided to make her fully equipped with weapons.

tataH zUlaM mahezAno mahezAnyai samarpayata ॥ cakraM ca kRSNo bhagavAJcchaMkhaM pAzaM ca pAzabhRta ॥ 21 ॥
Then lord Śiva offered her a spear; Lord Kṛṣṇa gave her a discus; Varuṇa conch and noose.

zaktiM hutAzano'yacchanmArutazcApameva ca ॥ bANapUrNeSudhI caiva vajraghaNTe zacIpatiH ॥ 22 ॥
Fire gave him power and the wind gave him bow The husband of Sachi was armed with arrows full of arrows and in the thunderbolt bell.

यमो ददौ कालदण्डमक्षमालां प्रजापतिः ॥ ब्रह्मा कमण्डलुं प्रादाद्रोमरश्मीन्दिवाकरः ॥ २३॥
yamo dadau kAladaNDamakSamAlAM prajApatiH ॥ brahmA kamaNDaluM prAdAdromarazmIndivAkaraH ॥ 23॥
Yama, the creator, gave him the rod of death and a garland of beads. Brahma gave him a waterpot and the sun shone on his hair.

kAlaH khaDgandadau tasyai phalakaM ca samujvalam ॥ kSIrAbdhI ruciraM hAramajare ca tathAmbare ॥ 24 ॥
Time gave her a sword and a bright board. The ocean of milk is beautiful and the necklace is old and the clothes are beautiful.

Chudamani and earrings and bracelets He wore a half moon necklace and beautiful anklets.

The whole ring on the fingers of the neck. Visvakarma also gave her a beautiful ax.

Many weapons and also an impenetrable body armor The ocean gave him a garland of beautiful lakes and a lotus.

The Himalayas gave him a lion and various gems Kubera offered her a vessel filled with wine.

The rest of the leaders of the enjoyers are strangely deceived He gave her a serpent necklace encrusted with various weapons and gems.

Thus honoured, the goddesss with these and other similar objects, ornaments, weapons etc. shouted loudly again and again.

The sky was filled with her terrible noise that echoed tremendously and made the three worlds agitated.

The four oceans shook and rolled. The earth quaked. Cries of victory were shouted by “the gods harassed by Mahiṣa.

tato'mbikAM parAM zaktiM mahAlakSmIsvarUpiNIm ॥ tuSTuvuste surAssarve bhaktigadgadayA girA ॥ 33 ॥
Then the gods eulogised the great Śakti, Ambikā in the form of Mahālakṣmī with words choked with devotion.

lokaM saMkSubdhamAlokya devatAparipanthinaH ॥ sannaddhasainikAste ca samuttasthurudAyudhAH ॥ 34 ॥
On seeing the world agitated, the enemies of the gods got up with uplifted arms and with their armies ready for war.

The infuriated Mahiṣa rushed at the direction of the sound and saw the goddess who had pervaded the three worlds with her beautiful lustre.

In the meantime, crores of great heroes led by Mahiṣāsura came there with weapons.

They looked at the tips of the chamaras and raised their arms in a terrible way. They were copper-grasping and fiercely powerful and the cat and the dark one.

durdharo durmukhazcaiva trinetrazca mahAhanuH ॥ ete cAnye ca bahavaH zUrA yuddhavizA radAH ॥ 38 ॥
He was difficult to hold and had a bad face and three eyes and a great chin These and many other brave men are skilled in warfare.

yuyudhuH samare devyA saha zastrAstrapAragAH ॥ itthaM kAlo vyatIyAya yudhyatorbhISaNastayoH ॥ 39॥
As they, the masters of weapons and missiles, fought with the goddess in the battle a terribly long time elapsed.

Different weapons and missiles hurled by the hosts of enemies were rendered futile instantaneously by the power of the goddess.

tato jaghAna sA devI cikSurapramukhAnarIn ॥ sagaNAngadayA bANaiH zUlazaktiparazvadhaiH ॥ 41॥
Then the goddess hit and struck the hosts of enemies Gikṣura and others with her club, arrows, spear, Śakti and axe.

When his armies fell the demon Mahiṣa struggled with the hosts of soldiers that issued from the breath of the goddess.

atADayatsaraiH kAzcitkAzcicchRGgadvayena ca ॥ lAMgUlena ca tuNDena bhinatti sma muhurmuhuH ॥ 43 ॥
He kicked some with the hoofs, hit some with the horns and others with his tail and snout.

Still he continued to fight. His head was cut off with the sword and he was felled down on the ground.

O king, thus the origin of Mahālakṣmī has been narrated to you. Now listen to the origin of Sarasvatī with a calm mind.
