munaya UcuH॥ vyAsotpattiM mahAbuddhe brUhi sUta dayAnidhe ॥ kRpayA parayA svAminkRtArthAnniSkuru prabho ॥ 1 ॥
The sages said:- O greatly intelligent charioteer treasure of mercy tell me the origin of Vyasa O master, by your supreme mercy, please bring me out of my fulfillment.

vyAsasya jananI proktA nAmnA satyavatI zubhA ॥ vivAhitA tu sA devI rAjJA zantanunA kila ॥ 2 ॥
The auspicious Satyavati is said to be the mother of Vyasa The goddess was married to King Shantanu.

tasyAM jAto mahAyogI kathaM vyAsaH parAzarAt ॥ sandeho'tra mahAJjAtastaM bhavAJchettumarhati ॥ 3 ॥
How did Vyasa, the great yogi, become born of her from Paraśara? There is a great deal of doubt about this and you should cut it off.

sUta uvAca ॥ ekadA tIrthayAtrAyAM vrajanyogI parAzaraH ॥ yadRcchayA gato ramyaM yamunAyAstaTaM zubham ॥ 4 ॥
Sūta said:— Once, while he was making his pilgrimage, Parāśara the yogin casually came to the auspicious and beautiful tanks of the Yamunā.

निषादमाह धर्मात्मा कुर्वन्तं भोजनन्तदा ॥ नयस्व यमुनापारं जलयानेन मामरम् ॥ ५ ॥
niSAdamAha dharmAtmA kurvantaM bhojanantadA ॥ nayasva yamunApAraM jalayAnena mAmaram ॥ 5 ॥
The righteous soul spoke to the ferryman who was taking his meals “Take me across the Yamunā quickly in your boat”.

ityukto muninA tena niSAdassvasutAM jagau ॥ matsyagandhAmamuM bAle pAraM nAvA naya drutam ॥ 6 ॥
When the ferryman was thus urged by the sage he spokí to his daughter Matsyagandhā:—“Girl, quickly take this sage to the other bank in the boat.

तापसोऽयं महाभागे दृश्यन्तीगर्भसंभवः ॥ तितीर्षुरस्ति मर्धाब्धिश्चतुराम्नायपारगः॥ ७॥
tApaso'yaM mahAbhAge dRzyantIgarbhasaMbhavaH ॥ titIrSurasti mardhAbdhizcaturAmnAyapAragaH॥ 7॥
This sage, O fortunate girl, is born of the womb of Dṛśyantī. He is the ocean of sacred rites. He has mastered the four Vedas. Now he desires to cross this river.

iti vijJApitA pitrA matsyagandhA mahAmunim॥ saMvAhayati naukAyAmAsInaM sUryyarociSam ॥ 8 ॥
Thus directed by her father, Matsyagandhā began to tale the great sage of solar splendour seated in the boat across the river.

कालयोगान्महायोगी तस्यां कामातुरोऽभवत् ॥ दृष्ट्वा योऽप्सरसां रूपं न कदापि विमोहितः ॥ ९ ॥
kAlayogAnmahAyogI tasyAM kAmAturo'bhavat ॥ dRSTvA yo'psarasAM rUpaM na kadApi vimohitaH ॥ 9 ॥
That great Yogin who had never been fascinated even on seeing the beauty of the celestial damsels became overwhelmed by lust towards her, in the circumstances.

grahItukAmaH sa munirdAzakanyAM manoharAm ॥ dakSiNena kareNaitAmaspRzaddakSiNe kare॥ 10॥
Desirous of clasping the beautiful daughter of the fisherman, the sage touched her in the right hand with his right hand.

tamuvAca vizAlAkSIM vacanaM smitapUrvakam ॥ kimidaM kriyaye karma vAcaMyama vigarhitam ॥ 11॥
The wide-eyed lass spoke to him smilingly—“O sage of controlled speech, why do you intend to perpetrate this despicable deed?

vasiSThasya kule ramye tvaM jAto'si mahAmate ॥ niSAdajA tvahambrahmankathaM saMgo ghaTeta nau ॥ 12 ॥
O most intelligent one, you are born of the beautiful family of Vasiṣṭha. O brahmin, I am the daughter of a Niṣāda. How can our union be proper?

दुर्लभं मानुषं जन्म ब्राह्मणत्वं विशेषतः ॥ तत्रापि तापसत्वं च दुर्लभं मुनिसत्तम ॥ १३ ॥
durlabhaM mAnuSaM janma brAhmaNatvaM vizeSataH ॥ tatrApi tApasatvaM ca durlabhaM munisattama ॥ 13 ॥
O excellent sage, birth as a man is very difficult to obtain; especially that as a brahmin. Even there the state of an ascetic is very rarely achieved.

विद्यया वपुषा वाचा कुलशीलेन चान्वितः ॥ कामबाणवशं यातो महदाश्चर्यमत्र हि ॥ १४ ॥
vidyayA vapuSA vAcA kulazIlena cAnvitaH ॥ kAmabANavazaM yAto mahadAzcaryamatra hi ॥ 14 ॥
It is extremely surprising that you endowed with learning, good physique, speech, noble birth and good conduct have become subservient to the arrows of Kāma!”

प्रवृत्तमप्यसत्कर्म कर्तुमेनं न कोऽपि ह ॥ भुवि वारयितुं शक्तः शापभीत्यास्य योगिनः ॥ १५ ॥
pravRttamapyasatkarma kartumenaM na ko'pi ha ॥ bhuvi vArayituM zaktaH zApabhItyAsya yoginaH ॥ 15 ॥
Then she thought within: “If this Yogin engages himself in the vicious act there is none in the world to prevent him due to his power of inflicting curse.”

इति संचिन्त्य हृदये निजगाद महामुनिम् ॥ तावद्धैर्यं कुरु स्वामिन्यावत्त्वां पारयामि न॥ १६॥
iti saMcintya hRdaye nijagAda mahAmunim ॥ tAvaddhairyaM kuru svAminyAvattvAM pArayAmi na॥ 16॥
After thinking in the mind thus she said to the great sage—“O holy lord, please forbear till I take you to the other bank.”

iti zrutvA vacastasyA yogirAjaH parAzaraH ॥ tatyAja pANiM tarasA sindhoH pAraM gataH punaH ॥ 17 ॥
On hearing her words the king of Yogins Parāśara left off her hand. He reached the other shore.

पुनर्जग्राह तां बालां मुनिं कामप्रपीडितः ॥ कंपमाना तु सा बाला तमुवाच दयानिधिम् ॥ १८ ॥
punarjagrAha tAM bAlAM muniM kAmaprapIDitaH ॥ kaMpamAnA tu sA bAlA tamuvAca dayAnidhim ॥ 18 ॥
Afflicted with lust the sage caught hold of the lass. Tremblingly the lass spoke to the merciful sage.

दुर्गन्धाहं मुनिश्रेष्ठ कृष्णवर्णा निषादजा ॥ भवांस्तु परमोदारविचारो योगिसत्तमः ॥ १९ ॥
durgandhAhaM munizreSTha kRSNavarNA niSAdajA ॥ bhavAMstu paramodAravicAro yogisattamaH ॥ 19 ॥
“O great sage, I have foul smell and black complexion, I am the daughter of a Niṣāda. You are the most excellent of Yogins of extremely liberal thoughts.

नावयोर्घटते सङ्गो काचकांचनयोरिव ॥ तुल्यजात्याकृतिकयोः संगः सौख्यप्रदो भवेत् ॥ २० ॥
nAvayorghaTate saGgo kAcakAMcanayoriva ॥ tulyajAtyAkRtikayoH saMgaH saukhyaprado bhavet ॥ 20 ॥
The union between us is not proper as of a piece of worthless glass with gold. The sexual inion of two persons of the same class and features may be conducive to bliss.”

इत्युक्तेन तया तेन क्षणमात्रेण कामिनी ॥ कृता योजनगंधा तु रम्यरूपा मनोरमा ॥ २१ ॥
ityuktena tayA tena kSaNamAtreNa kAminI ॥ kRtA yojanagaMdhA tu ramyarUpA manoramA ॥ 21 ॥
As the sage addressed her thus, the damsel was instantly converted into Yojanagandhā, (one whose fragrant odours spread to a Yojana), one of fine features and beauty.

पुनर्जग्राह तां बालां स मुनिः कामपीडितः ॥ ग्रहीतुकामं तं दृष्ट्वा पुनः प्रोवाच वासवी ॥ २२ ॥
punarjagrAha tAM bAlAM sa muniH kAmapIDitaH ॥ grahItukAmaM taM dRSTvA punaH provAca vAsavI ॥ 22 ॥
Afflicted by lust the sage caught hold of her again. On seeing him bent upon seizing her she said again.

रात्रौ व्यवायः कर्तव्यो न दिवेति श्रुतिर्जगौ॥ दिवासंगे महान्दोषो निन्दा चापि दुरासदा ॥ २३ ॥
rAtrau vyavAyaH kartavyo na diveti zrutirjagau॥ divAsaMge mahAndoSo nindA cApi durAsadA ॥ 23 ॥
“It is mentioned in the Vedas that sexual intercourse shall be indulged in at night; not during the day. There is great harm in having sexual intercourse during the day time. It is censured.

तस्मात्तावत्प्रतीक्षस्व यावद्भवति यामिनी ॥ पश्यन्ति मानवाश्चात्र पिता मे च तटे स्थितः ॥ २४ ॥
tasmAttAvatpratIkSasva yAvadbhavati yAminI ॥ pazyanti mAnavAzcAtra pitA me ca taTe sthitaH ॥ 24 ॥
Hence please wait till the night falls. Now all the men will see us and so shall my father who stands at the other bank.”

तयोक्तमिदमाकर्ण्य वचनं मुनिपुंगवः ॥ नीहारं कल्पयामास सद्यः पुण्यबलेन वै ॥ २५ ॥
tayoktamidamAkarNya vacanaM munipuMgavaH ॥ nIhAraM kalpayAmAsa sadyaH puNyabalena vai ॥ 25 ॥
On hearing the words uttered by her, the leading sage immediately created a screen of snow, thanks to the strength of his merit.

नीहारे च समुत्पन्ने तमसा रात्रिसंनिभे ॥ व्यवायचकिता बाला पुनः प्रोवाच तम्मुनिम् ॥ २६ ॥
nIhAre ca samutpanne tamasA rAtrisaMnibhe ॥ vyavAyacakitA bAlA punaH provAca tammunim ॥ 26 ॥
When the sheet of mist spread and it looked just as night, the girl, afraid of submitting herself to sexual intercourse, spoke to the sage again.

योगिन्नमोघवीर्य्यस्त्वं भुक्त्वा गन्तासि मां यदि ॥ सगर्भा स्यां तदा स्वामिन्का गतिर्मे भवेदिति ॥ २७ ॥
yoginnamoghavIryyastvaM bhuktvA gantAsi mAM yadi ॥ sagarbhA syAM tadA svAminkA gatirme bhavediti ॥ 27 ॥
“O Yogin, your semen never fails. You may enjoy me and go away. O holy lord, I shall become pregnant, what will be my fate then?

कन्याव्रतं महाबुद्धे मम नष्टं भविष्यति ॥ हसिष्यति तदा लोकाः पितरं किं ब्रवीम्यहम् ॥ २८॥
kanyAvrataM mahAbuddhe mama naSTaM bhaviSyati ॥ hasiSyati tadA lokAH pitaraM kiM bravImyaham ॥ 28॥
O intelligent sage, my virginity will be ruined, People will laugh at me. What will I tell my father?”

॥ पराशर उवाच ॥ रम बाले मया सार्द्धं स्वच्छन्दं कामजै रसैः॥ स्वीयाभिलाषमाख्याहि पूरयाम्यधुना प्रिये ॥ २९ ॥
॥ parAzara uvAca ॥ rama bAle mayA sArddhaM svacchandaM kAmajai rasaiH॥ svIyAbhilASamAkhyAhi pUrayAmyadhunA priye ॥ 29 ॥
Parāśara said:— O maiden, O beloved girl, sport with me freely with loving emotion. You tell me what you desire. I shall fulfil it.

मदाज्ञासत्यकरणान्नाम्ना सत्यवती भव ॥ वन्दनीया तथाशेषैर्योगिभिस्त्रिदशैरपि ॥ ३० ॥
madAjJAsatyakaraNAnnAmnA satyavatI bhava ॥ vandanIyA tathAzeSairyogibhistridazairapi ॥ 30 ॥
By making my advances fruitful you will be known as Satyavatī. You will deserve the respect of all Yogins and even the gods.

सत्यवत्युवाच ॥ जानते न पिता माता न वान्ये भुवि मानवाः ॥ कन्याधर्मो न मे हन्याद्यदि स्वीकुरु मान्तदा ॥ ३१॥
satyavatyuvAca ॥ jAnate na pitA mAtA na vAnye bhuvi mAnavAH ॥ kanyAdharmo na me hanyAdyadi svIkuru mAntadA ॥ 31॥
Satyavati said:- Neither father nor mother nor any other human being on earth knows If the virginity of a daughter does not kill me accept me then.

पुत्रश्च त्वत्समो नाथ भवेदद्भुतशक्तिमान् ॥ सौगन्ध्यं सर्वदांगे मे तारुण्यं च नवंनवम् ॥ ३२ ॥
putrazca tvatsamo nAtha bhavedadbhutazaktimAn ॥ saugandhyaM sarvadAMge me tAruNyaM ca navaMnavam ॥ 32 ॥
O lord a son equal to you will be endowed with wonderful powers The fragrance is all around me and my youth is fresh and new.

पराशर उवाच ॥ शृणु प्रिये तवाभीष्टं सर्वं पूर्णं भविष्यति ॥ विष्ण्वंशसंभवः पुत्रो भविता ते महायशाः ॥ ३३ ॥
parAzara uvAca ॥ zRNu priye tavAbhISTaM sarvaM pUrNaM bhaviSyati ॥ viSNvaMzasaMbhavaH putro bhavitA te mahAyazAH ॥ 33 ॥
Listen to me O beloved girl, all your desires will be fulfilled. A son of great fame of Viṣṇu’s part will be born to you.

किंचिद्वै कारणं विद्धि यतोऽहं कामपीडितः॥ दृष्ट्वा चाप्सरसारूपं नामुह्यन्मे नमः क्वचित् ॥ ३४॥
kiMcidvai kAraNaM viddhi yato'haM kAmapIDitaH॥ dRSTvA cApsarasArUpaM nAmuhyanme namaH kvacit ॥ 34॥
Know that there is a reason that I have become lustful. Even on seeing the beauty of celestial damsels my mind was never deluded anywhere before.

मीनगन्धां समालक्ष्य त्वां मोहवशगोऽभवम् ॥ न बाले भालपट्टस्थो ब्रह्मलेखोऽन्यथा भवेत्॥ ३५॥
mInagandhAM samAlakSya tvAM mohavazago'bhavam ॥ na bAle bhAlapaTTastho brahmalekho'nyathA bhavet॥ 35॥
On seeing you of fish odour I was enamoured. O lass, lines drawn by Brahmā on the forehead cannot prove untrue.

पुराणकर्ता पुत्रस्ते वेदशाखाविभागकृत्॥ भविष्यति वरारोहे ख्यातकीर्तिर्जगत्त्रये॥ ३६॥
purANakartA putraste vedazAkhAvibhAgakRt॥ bhaviSyati varArohe khyAtakIrtirjagattraye॥ 36॥
O comely lady, your son will be the author of the Purāṇas, the classifier of the Vedas and renowned in the three worlds.

इत्युक्त्वा तां सुरम्याङ्गीं भुक्त्वा योगविशारदः ॥ वव्राज शीघ्रं यमुनाजले स्नात्वा महामुने ॥ ३७ ॥
ityuktvA tAM suramyAGgIM bhuktvA yogavizAradaH ॥ vavrAja zIghraM yamunAjale snAtvA mahAmune ॥ 37 ॥
O great sage, after saying this and enjoying the beautiful lass, the sage, an expert in Yoga, took his bath in the Yamunā and went away quickly.

सापि गर्भं दधाराशु द्वादशात्मसमप्रभम् ॥ असूत सूर्य्यजाद्वीपे कामदेवमिवात्मजम् ॥ ३८ ॥
sApi garbhaM dadhArAzu dvAdazAtmasamaprabham ॥ asUta sUryyajAdvIpe kAmadevamivAtmajam ॥ 38 ॥
She conceived and immediately gave birth in an island on the Yamunā to a son with the lustre of the sun and resembling Kāmadeva.

वामे कमण्डलुं बिभ्रद्दक्षिणे दण्डमुत्तमम् ॥ पिशंगीभिर्जटाभिश्च राजितो महसां चयः॥ ३९॥
vAme kamaNDaluM bibhraddakSiNe daNDamuttamam ॥ pizaMgIbhirjaTAbhizca rAjito mahasAM cayaH॥ 39॥
In his left hand he was holding the water pot and in his right he had an excellent staff. He had matted hair of tawny colour and shone like a mass of splendour.

जातमात्रस्तु तेजस्वी मातरं प्रत्यभाषत ॥ गच्छ मातर्यथाकामं गच्छाम्यहमतः परम् ॥ ४०॥
jAtamAtrastu tejasvI mAtaraM pratyabhASata ॥ gaccha mAtaryathAkAmaM gacchAmyahamataH param ॥ 40॥
Immediately after birth the brilliant sage spoke to his mother “O mother, go as you please and I also go at my will.

mAtaryadA bhavetkAryaM tava kiMciddhRdIpsitam॥ saMsmRtazcAgamiSyAmi tvadicchApUrtihetave ॥ 41॥

It is by propitiating Him that Viṣṇu acquired the art of bestowing salvation; and Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Rudra became the creator, sustainer and the annihilates respectively.

skAndaM tathaiva brahmANDAkhyaM purANaM ca kIrtitam ॥ yazasyaM puNyadaM nRRNAM zrotRRNAM zAMkaraM yaza ॥ 122॥
The Skanda and the Puranas called Brahmanda are also mentioned. Fame is the source of merit for men and fame is the source of peace for those who hear it.

Nandikeśvara said:— O Taṇḍi, Brahma the four-faced deity is the main speaker. Hence, O sage, the first Purāṇa is called Brāhma.

The second Purāṇa is called Padma. It is so called because it mentions the greatness of the Padmakalpa.

Another Purāṇa composed by Parāśara and enlightening the details of Viṣṇu is called Vaiṣṇava Purāṇa. It is said to be composed by Vyāsa since there is no difference between father and son.

Those who know the Purāṇas speak that purāṇa as Śiva Purāṇa wherein there are many stories of Śiva in its earlier and later forms.

Where the stories of the goddess Durgā are mentioned, it is said to be Bhāgavata Purāṇa as well as Devīpurāṇa.

The Puranas spoken by Narada are called Naradaya Puranas. where the great sage Markandeya became the speaker in the Tanda.

The seventh Purana is also described in the Markandeya Purana. From the combination of fire that fire is the future of the future statement.

vivartanAdbrahmaNastu brahmavaivartamucyate ॥ liMgasya caritoktatvAtpurANaM liMgamucyate ॥ 132 ॥
Since the transformation of Brahman is narrated the Purāṇa is called Brahmavaivarta. Since the story of Liṅga is mentioned it is called Liṅga Purāṇa.

O sage the twelfth Purana is the story of Varaha where Skanda himself is the listener and the speaker and the Supreme Lord Himself.

That Skanda is also described as the Vamana of Vamana. The story of the tortoise is told by the fish and the fish is told by the fish.

Garuda himself is the speaker of that which is called Garuda Because the character of the universe is described, the universe is described.

Thus was Vyāsa born of Satyavatī and Parāśara. He composed the excellent Mahābhārata and the Purāṇa Saṃhitās.

O brahmin, you shall not entertain a doubt as to why Satyavatī had sexual intercourse with Parāśara and Śantanu.

This wondrous birth has sufficient reasons behind it. In the story of great men the good qualities shall be grasped by the intelligent people.

idaM rahasyaM paramaM yaH zRNoti paThatyapi ॥ sa sarvapApanirmukta RSiloke mahIyate॥ 140॥
He who reads or listens to this great secret is rid of all sins and is honoured in the world of sages.
