शौनक उवाच ॥ आचार्य्यपूजनं ब्रूहि सूत व्यासगुरोऽधुना ॥ ग्रन्थस्य श्रवणान्ते हि किं कर्तव्यं तदप्यहो ॥ १ ॥
zaunaka uvAca ॥ AcAryyapUjanaM brUhi sUta vyAsaguro'dhunA ॥ granthasya zravaNAnte hi kiM kartavyaM tadapyaho ॥ 1 ॥
Śaunaka said:— O Sūta having Vyāsa as preceptor, please tell me now the mode of worshipping the preceptor. What shall be done at the end of listening to the holy book? Please mention that also.

सूत उवाच ॥ पूजयेद्विधिवद्भक्त्याचार्य्यं श्रुत्वा कथां पराम् ॥ ग्रन्थान्ते विधिवद्दद्यादाचार्य्याय प्रसन्नधीः ॥ २॥
sUta uvAca ॥ pUjayedvidhivadbhaktyAcAryyaM zrutvA kathAM parAm ॥ granthAnte vidhivaddadyAdAcAryyAya prasannadhIH ॥ 2॥
Sūta said:— After hearing the story the devotee shall worship the preceptor duly with devotion. Delighted in mind he shall make liberal gifts duly to the preceptor at the conclusion of the holy book.

ततो वक्तारमानम्य संपूज्य च यथाविधि ॥ भूषणैर्हस्तकर्णानां वस्त्रैस्सौम्यादिभिस्सुधीः ॥ ३॥
tato vaktAramAnamya saMpUjya ca yathAvidhi ॥ bhUSaNairhastakarNAnAM vastraissaumyAdibhissudhIH ॥ 3॥
The intelligent devotee shall bow to the propounder and worship him duly. Gifts of ornaments for hands and ears and fine garments shall be made.

शिवपूजासमाप्तौ तु दद्याद्धेनुं सवत्सिकाम् ॥ कृत्वासनं सुवर्णस्य पलमानस्य साम्बरम् ॥ ४ ॥
zivapUjAsamAptau tu dadyAddhenuM savatsikAm ॥ kRtvAsanaM suvarNasya palamAnasya sAmbaram ॥ 4 ॥
After completing the worship of Lord Shiva one should offer a cow with a calf He made a seat of gold and palmed sambar.

तत्रास्थाप्य शुभं ग्रंथं लिखितं ललिताक्षरैः ॥ आचार्याय सुधीर्दद्यान्मुक्तः स्याद्भवबन्धनैः ॥ ५ ॥
tatrAsthApya zubhaM graMthaM likhitaM lalitAkSaraiH ॥ AcAryAya sudhIrdadyAnmuktaH syAdbhavabandhanaiH ॥ 5 ॥
There he placed an auspicious book written in beautiful letters A wise man should give it to the teacher and he will be freed from the bondage of material existence.

ग्रामो गजो हयश्चापि यथाशक्त्यपराणि च ॥ मुने सर्वाणि देयानि वाचकाय महात्मने ॥ ६ ॥
grAmo gajo hayazcApi yathAzaktyaparANi ca ॥ mune sarvANi deyAni vAcakAya mahAtmane ॥ 6 ॥
O sage, a village, an elephant or a horse or other things shall be given as possible to the noble preceptor who reads and propounds the story.

विधानसहितं सम्यक्छतं हि सफलं स्मृतम् ॥ पुराणं शौनकमुने सत्यमेवोदितं मया ॥ ७ ॥
vidhAnasahitaM samyakchataM hi saphalaM smRtam ॥ purANaM zaunakamune satyamevoditaM mayA ॥ 7 ॥
O sage Śaunaka, Purāṇa is efficacious if it is listened to in accordance with the rules. I speak truth to you.

तस्माद्विधानदुक्तं तु शृणुयाद्भक्तितो मुने ॥ पुराणं निगमार्थाढ्यं पुण्यदं हृदयं श्रुतेः ॥ ८ ॥
tasmAdvidhAnaduktaM tu zRNuyAdbhaktito mune ॥ purANaM nigamArthADhyaM puNyadaM hRdayaM zruteH ॥ 8 ॥
O sage, the Purāṇa full of the meanings of the Vedas, the heart of the Vedas, the meritorious holy book shall be listened to with devotion and in accordance with the rules.
