सनत्कुमार उवाच॥ सप्त ते तपतां श्रेष्ठ स्वर्गे पितृगणास्स्मृताः ॥ चत्वारो मूर्त्तिमंतो वै त्रयश्चैव ह्यमूर्तयः ॥ १॥
sanatkumAra uvAca॥ sapta te tapatAM zreSTha svarge pitRgaNAssmRtAH ॥ catvAro mUrttimaMto vai trayazcaiva hyamUrtayaH ॥ 1॥
Sanatkumāra said:— O foremost among the performers of penance, the Pitṛs in the heaven are seven in number. Four of them are embodied and three bodiless.

तान्यजंते देवगणा आद्या विप्रादयस्तथा॥ आप्याययंति ते पूर्वं सोमं योगबलेन वै ॥ २॥
tAnyajaMte devagaNA AdyA viprAdayastathA॥ ApyAyayaMti te pUrvaM somaM yogabalena vai ॥ 2॥
The primordial groups of gods, brahmins and others worship them. With the power of their Yoga they strengthen and gladden Soma.

tasmAcchrAddhAni deyAni yoginAM tu vizeSataH॥ sarveSAM rAjataM pAtramatha vA rajatAnvitam॥ 3॥
Therefore shraddhas should be performed especially for the yogis. A silver vessel or one with silver for all of them.

दत्तं स्वधां पुरोधाय श्राद्धे प्रीणाति वै पितॄन्॥ वह्नेराप्यायनं कृत्वा सोमस्य तु यमस्य वै॥ ४॥
dattaM svadhAM purodhAya zrAddhe prINAti vai pitRRn॥ vahnerApyAyanaM kRtvA somasya tu yamasya vai॥ 4॥
Giving Svadha to the priest in Shraddha pleases the ancestors. After offering drinks to the fire and to the moon and to Yama.

udagAyanamapyagnAvagnyabhAve'psu vA punaH ॥ pitRRnprINAti yo bhaktyA pitaraH prINayaMti tam ॥ 5॥
Even singing the rising sun in the absence of fire or fire or in water He who pleases the ancestors with devotion is pleased by the ancestors.

यच्छंति पितरः पुष्टिं प्रजाश्च विपुलास्तथा ॥ स्वर्गमारोग्यवृद्धिं च यदन्यदपि चेप्सितम् ॥ ६ ॥
yacchaMti pitaraH puSTiM prajAzca vipulAstathA ॥ svargamArogyavRddhiM ca yadanyadapi cepsitam ॥ 6 ॥
The forefathers provide nourishment and the abundant subjects Heaven, health and prosperity and whatever else you desire.

देवकार्यादपि मुने पितृकार्य्यं विशिष्यते ॥ पितृभक्तोऽसि विप्रर्षे तेन त्वमजरामरः ॥ ७ ॥
devakAryAdapi mune pitRkAryyaM viziSyate ॥ pitRbhakto'si viprarSe tena tvamajarAmaraH ॥ 7 ॥
O sage, the rites of Pitṛs are better than the rites of the gods. O brahmin sage, since you are a devotee of the Pitṛs you shall be free from old age and death.

न योगेन गतिस्सा तु पितृभक्तस्य या मुने ॥ पितृभक्तिर्विशेषेण तस्मात्कार्या महामुने ॥ ८ ॥
na yogena gatissA tu pitRbhaktasya yA mune ॥ pitRbhaktirvizeSeNa tasmAtkAryA mahAmune ॥ 8 ॥
O sage, the goal attained by devotion to the Pitṛs is not attained by the practices of Yoga. O great sage, so devotion to the Pitṛs shall be pursued with care.

मार्कण्डेय उवाच ॥ एवमुक्त्वाऽऽशु देवेशो देवानामपि दुर्लभम्॥ चक्षुर्दत्त्वा सविज्ञानं जगाम यौगिकीं गतिम् ॥ ९ ॥
mArkaNDeya uvAca ॥ evamuktvA''zu devezo devAnAmapi durlabham॥ cakSurdattvA savijJAnaM jagAma yaugikIM gatim ॥ 9 ॥
Mārkaṇḍeya said:— After saying thus and immediately bestowing the vision of perfect knowledge the lord of the gods disappeared.

शृणु भीष्म पुरा भूयो भारद्वाजात्मजा द्विजाः ॥ योगधर्ममनुप्राप्य भ्रष्टा दुश्चरितेन वै ॥ १० ॥
zRNu bhISma purA bhUyo bhAradvAjAtmajA dvijAH ॥ yogadharmamanuprApya bhraSTA duzcaritena vai ॥ 10 ॥
O Bhīṣma, listen again. Formerly, even after learning the code of Yoga, the brahmin sons of Bhāradvāja were degraded due to their evil course.

वाग्दुष्टः क्रोधनो हिंस्रः पिशुनः कविरेव च ॥ स्वसृषः पितृवर्ती च नामभिः कर्मभिस्तथा ॥ ११ ॥
vAgduSTaH krodhano hiMsraH pizunaH kavireva ca ॥ svasRSaH pitRvartI ca nAmabhiH karmabhistathA ॥ 11 ॥
Their names which indicate their activities are Vāgduṣṭa (defiled in speech), Krodhana (angry), Hiṃsra (violent), Piśuna (backbiter), Kavi(poet), Svasṛṣa(self-creating) and Pitṛvartin (worshipping the pitṛs).

कौशिकस्य सुतास्तात शिष्या गर्गस्य चाभवन् ॥ पितर्युपरते सर्वे प्रवसंतस्तदाभवन् ॥ १२॥
kauzikasya sutAstAta ziSyA gargasya cAbhavan ॥ pitaryuparate sarve pravasaMtastadAbhavan ॥ 12॥
O dear, the sons of Kauśika became the disciples of Garga. When their father had expired they went in exile.

विनियोगाद्गुरोस्तस्य गां दोग्ध्रीं समकालयन् ॥ समानवत्सां कपिलां सर्वेऽन्यायागतास्तदा ॥ १३ ॥
viniyogAdgurostasya gAM dogdhrIM samakAlayan ॥ samAnavatsAM kapilAM sarve'nyAyAgatAstadA ॥ 13 ॥
At the instance of their preceptor they looked after his cow and her calf. All of them were unjust in their actions.

तेषां पथि क्षुधार्तानां बाल्यान्मोहाच्च भारत ॥ क्रूरा बुद्धिस्समुत्पन्ना तां गां तै हिंसितुं तदा ॥ १४ ॥
teSAM pathi kSudhArtAnAM bAlyAnmohAcca bhArata ॥ krUrA buddhissamutpannA tAM gAM tai hiMsituM tadA ॥ 14 ॥
O descendant of Bharata, once in their coarse of wandering in the forest, they were oppressed by hunger. They had the cruel intention of injuring the cow then.

तां कविसस्वसृपश्चैव याचेते नैति वै तदा ॥ न चाशक्यास्तु ताभ्यां वा तदा वारयितुं निजाः ॥ १५ ॥
tAM kavisasvasRpazcaiva yAcete naiti vai tadA ॥ na cAzakyAstu tAbhyAM vA tadA vArayituM nijAH ॥ 15 ॥
Kavi and Svasṛṣa forbade them do so. But they could not be prevented from that act.

पितृवर्ती तु यस्तेषां नित्यं श्राद्धाह्निको द्विजः ॥ स सर्वानब्रवीत्कोपात्पितृभक्तिसमन्वितः ॥ १६॥
pitRvartI tu yasteSAM nityaM zrAddhAhniko dvijaH ॥ sa sarvAnabravItkopAtpitRbhaktisamanvitaH ॥ 16॥
The brahmin Pitṛvartin who performed Śrāddha everyday with devotion to the Pitṛs spoke to them angrily.

यद्यशक्यं प्रकर्तव्यं पितॄनुद्दिश्य साध्यताम् ॥ प्रकुर्वंतो हि श्राद्धं तु सर्व एव समाहिताः॥ १७॥
yadyazakyaM prakartavyaM pitRRnuddizya sAdhyatAm ॥ prakurvaMto hi zrAddhaM tu sarva eva samAhitAH॥ 17॥
If it is not possible to stop this do it with the Pitṛs in view. Perform the Śrāddha, ye all cautiously.

एवमेषा च गौर्धर्मं प्राप्स्यते नात्र संशयः ॥ पितॄनभ्यर्च्य धर्मेण नाधर्मो नो भविष्यति ॥ १८॥
evameSA ca gaurdharmaM prApsyate nAtra saMzayaH ॥ pitRRnabhyarcya dharmeNa nAdharmo no bhaviSyati ॥ 18॥
If performed thus, the cow will attain piety undoubtedly. By worshipping Pitṛs we shall not be affected by sin.

एवमुक्ताश्च ते सर्वे प्रोक्षयित्वा च गां तदा ॥ पितृभ्यः कल्पयित्वा तु ह्युपायुंजत भारत ॥ १९॥
evamuktAzca te sarve prokSayitvA ca gAM tadA ॥ pitRbhyaH kalpayitvA tu hyupAyuMjata bhArata ॥ 19॥
O descendant of Bharata, on being advised thus, they all sprinkled the cow with sacred water, dedicated it to the Pitṛs and used it as their food.

उपयुज्य च गां सर्वे गुरोस्तस्य न्यवेदयन् ॥ शार्दूलेन हता धेनुर्वत्सा वै गृह्यतामिति ॥ २०॥
upayujya ca gAM sarve gurostasya nyavedayan ॥ zArdUlena hatA dhenurvatsA vai gRhyatAmiti ॥ 20॥
After eating the cow they said to the preceptor saying—“The cow is killed by a tiger. Let the calf be accepted.”

आर्तवत्स तु तं वत्सं प्रतिजग्राह वै द्विजः॥ मिथ्योपचारतः पापमभूत्तेषां च गोघ्नताम् ॥ २१॥
Artavatsa tu taM vatsaM pratijagrAha vai dvijaH॥ mithyopacArataH pApamabhUtteSAM ca goghnatAm ॥ 21॥
The sage accepted the calf with great distress. The killers of the cow became sinful by their false reverence and service.

ततः कालेन कियता कालधर्ममुपागताः॥ ते सप्त भ्रातरस्तात बभूवुस्स्वायुषःक्षये॥ २२॥
tataH kAlena kiyatA kAladharmamupAgatAH॥ te sapta bhrAtarastAta babhUvussvAyuSaHkSaye॥ 22॥
O dear, in due course, when their term of life expired the seven brothers passed away.

ते वै क्रूरतया हैंस्त्र्यात्स्वानार्य्यत्वाद्गुरोस्तथा ॥ उग्रहिंसाविहाराश्च जातास्सप्त सहोदराः ॥ २३ ॥
te vai krUratayA haiMstryAtsvAnAryyatvAdgurostathA ॥ ugrahiMsAvihArAzca jAtAssapta sahodarAH ॥ 23 ॥
They are cruelly killed by women and their teachers because of their ignobleness They had seven brothers who enjoyed violence.

लुब्धकस्य सुतास्तावद्बलवंतो मनस्विनः ॥ जाता व्याधा दशार्णेषु सप्त धर्मविचक्षणाः ॥ २४॥
lubdhakasya sutAstAvadbalavaMto manasvinaH ॥ jAtA vyAdhA dazArNeSu sapta dharmavicakSaNAH ॥ 24॥
The sons of the hunter were so strong and intelligent There were seven hunters born in the ten arnas who were conversant with religious principles.

स्वधर्मनिरतास्सर्वे मृगा मोहविवर्जिताः ॥ आसन्नुद्वेगसंविग्ना रम्ये कालंजरे गिरौ ॥ २५ ॥
svadharmaniratAssarve mRgA mohavivarjitAH ॥ AsannudvegasaMvignA ramye kAlaMjare girau ॥ 25 ॥
They were engaged in the practice of sacred rites. They were free from the delusion of hunting animals. On the beautiful mountain Kālañjara they passed their time with distress.

तमेवार्थमनुध्याय ज्ञानं मरणसंभवम् ॥ आसन्वनचराः क्षांता निर्द्वंद्वा निष्परिग्रहाः ॥ २६ ॥
tamevArthamanudhyAya jJAnaM maraNasaMbhavam ॥ AsanvanacarAH kSAMtA nirdvaMdvA niSparigrahAH ॥ 26 ॥
Recollecting the event of their death the forest-roamers became forbearers, free from Dvandvas and averse to taking gifts.

ते सर्वे शुभकर्माणस्सद्धर्माणो वनेचराः ॥ विधर्माचरणैर्हीना जातिस्मरणसिद्धयः ॥ २७॥
te sarve zubhakarmANassaddharmANo vanecarAH ॥ vidharmAcaraNairhInA jAtismaraNasiddhayaH ॥ 27॥
The hunters performed auspicious rites, and holy deeds, disassociating themselves from the wicked. They had the power of the memory of the previous birth.

पूर्वजातिषु यो धर्मः श्रुतो गुरुकुलेषु वै ॥ तथैव चास्थिता बुद्धौ संसारेऽप्य निवर्तने ॥ २८॥
pUrvajAtiSu yo dharmaH zruto gurukuleSu vai ॥ tathaiva cAsthitA buddhau saMsAre'pya nivartane ॥ 28॥
Whatever sacred rites they had heard in the preceptor’s hermitage in the previous births were retained in their minds. So also the goal of non-return to this world.

गिरिमध्ये जहुः प्राणाँल्लब्धाहारास्तपस्विनः ॥ तेषां तु पतितानां च यानि स्थानानि भारत ॥ २९ ॥
girimadhye jahuH prANA~llabdhAhArAstapasvinaH ॥ teSAM tu patitAnAM ca yAni sthAnAni bhArata ॥ 29 ॥
The ascetics who had obtained food gave up their lives in the middle of the mountain What are the places where they fell down, O Bharatha?

तथैवाद्यापि दृश्यंते गिरौ कालञ्जरे नृप ॥ कर्मणा तेन ते जाताः शुभाशुभविवर्जकाः ॥ ३०॥
tathaivAdyApi dRzyaMte girau kAlaJjare nRpa ॥ karmaNA tena te jAtAH zubhAzubhavivarjakAH ॥ 30॥
Similarly, O King, these are still seen on the mountains of Kalanjara. By that action they were born devoid of good and evil.

शुभाऽशुभतरां योनिं चक्रवाकत्वमागताः ॥ शुभे देशे शरद्वीपे सप्तैवासञ्जलौकसः ॥ ३१ ॥
zubhA'zubhatarAM yoniM cakravAkatvamAgatAH ॥ zubhe deze zaradvIpe saptaivAsaJjalaukasaH ॥ 31 ॥
On an island in an auspicious spot the seven became aquatic birds. They were reborn as Cakravāka birds in a life that is neither auspicious nor inauspicious.

त्यक्त्वा सहचरीधर्मं मुनयो धर्मधारिणः ॥ निस्संगा निर्ममाश्शांता निर्द्वंद्वा निष्परिग्रहाः ॥ ३२ ॥
tyaktvA sahacarIdharmaM munayo dharmadhAriNaH ॥ nissaMgA nirmamAzzAMtA nirdvaMdvA niSparigrahAH ॥ 32 ॥
They abandoned the contact with their mates. They were like sages practising sacred rites, free from associations and Egotistic feelings. They remained calm. They did not accept gifts. They were free from Dvandvas.

निवृत्तिनिर्वृताश्चैव शकुना नामतः स्मृताः ॥ ते ब्रह्मचारिणस्सर्वे शकुना धर्मधारिणः ॥ ३३॥
nivRttinirvRtAzcaiva zakunA nAmataH smRtAH ॥ te brahmacAriNassarve zakunA dharmadhAriNaH ॥ 33॥
They were birds only in name. They were holy b?xhelors delighted in renunciation. They were birds practising sacred rites.

जातिस्मरास्सुसंवृद्धास्सप्तैव ब्रह्मचारिणः॥ स्थिता एकत्र सद्धर्मा विकाररहितास्सदा॥ ३४॥
jAtismarAssusaMvRddhAssaptaiva brahmacAriNaH॥ sthitA ekatra saddharmA vikArarahitAssadA॥ 34॥
They could remember their previous births. They grew old even as they were bachelors. They remained together free from aberrations and performed good rites.

विप्रयोनौ तु यन्मोहान्मिथ्यापचरितं गुरौ॥ तिर्य्यग्योनौ तथा जन्म श्राद्धाज्ज्ञानं च लेभिरे॥ ३५॥
viprayonau tu yanmohAnmithyApacaritaM gurau॥ tiryyagyonau tathA janma zrAddhAjjJAnaM ca lebhire॥ 35॥
When they were born as brahmins they acted falsely to their preceptor. Still in their birth as birds they attained knowledge as a result of the Śrāddha they had performed.

तथा तु पितृकार्य्यार्थं कृतं श्राद्धं व्यवस्थितैः॥ तदा ज्ञानं च जातिं च क्रमात्प्राप्तं गुणोत्तरम्॥ ३६॥
tathA tu pitRkAryyArthaM kRtaM zrAddhaM vyavasthitaiH॥ tadA jJAnaM ca jAtiM ca kramAtprAptaM guNottaram॥ 36॥
They had performed the Śrāddha for the Pitṛs with due rituals. They retained memory of previous noble birth.

पूर्वजादिषु यद्ब्रह्म श्रुतं गुरुकुलेषु वै ॥ तथैव संस्थितज्ञानं तस्माज्ज्ञानं समभ्यसेत् ॥ ३७ ॥
pUrvajAdiSu yadbrahma zrutaM gurukuleSu vai ॥ tathaiva saMsthitajJAnaM tasmAjjJAnaM samabhyaset ॥ 37 ॥
The knowledge of Brahma practised by the ancients or found in the preceptors’ families stands as of yore even today. One shall practise that knowledge therefore.

सुमनाश्च सुवाक्छुद्धः पञ्चमश्छिद्रदर्शकः ॥ स्वतंत्रश्च सुयज्ञश्च कुलीना नामतः स्मृताः ॥ ३८॥
sumanAzca suvAkchuddhaH paJcamazchidradarzakaH ॥ svataMtrazca suyajJazca kulInA nAmataH smRtAH ॥ 38॥
They were of noble birth and were named Svatantra. Suyajña, Sumanas, Suvākśuddha (Suvākṣuddha/Suvākchuddha?) and the fifth one Chidradarśaka.

teSAM tatra vihaMgAnAM caratAM dharmacAriNAm ॥ suvRttamabhavattatra tacchRNuSva mahAmune॥ 39॥
While they were practising sacred rites an auspicious event happened there. O great sage, please listen to that.

nIpAnAmIzvaro rAjA prabhAveNa samanvitaH॥ zrImAnantaHpuravRto vanaM tatrAviveza ha ॥ 40 ॥
The prosperous king of Nīpas, endowed with strength, and accompanied by his harem entered that forest.

स्वतंत्रश्चक्रवाकस्सस्पृहयामास तं नृपम्॥ दृष्ट्वा यांतं सुखोपेतं राज्यशोभासमन्वितम् ॥ ४१॥
svataMtrazcakravAkassaspRhayAmAsa taM nRpam॥ dRSTvA yAMtaM sukhopetaM rAjyazobhAsamanvitam ॥ 41॥
The Cakravaka Svatantra yearned much, on seeing the happy king endowed with the glory of the kingdom pass along.

If there is any good deed or austerity or ritual I am distressed by fasting and austerities and by remaining steady.

tasya sarvasya pUrNena phalenApi kRtena hi ॥ sarvasaubhAgyapAtrazca bhaveyamahamIdRzaH ॥ 43॥
Even with the full fruits of all that he has done I should be like this and be worthy of all the good fortune.

Mārkaṇḍeya said:— Then two of his comrades said. “We shall be your ministers, your delighters and well-wishers.”

tathetyuktvA tu tasyAsIttadA yogAtmano gatiH ॥ evaM tau cakravAkau ca svavAkyaM pratyabhASatAm ॥ 45 ॥
After saying “So be it”, the Yogic soul attained his goal. The two Cakravākas replied to him.

After renouncing action by the Yogic practices why do you long for such a boon? Hence hear my statement.

rAjA tvaM bhavitA tAta kAMpilye nagarottame॥ etau te sacivau syAtAM vyabhicArapradharSitau॥ 47॥
O dear, you will become a king in the excellent city of Kāmpilya. These too will be your ministers who will not go astray.

The three did not speak about the kingdom to their four comrades. Being delighted Sumanas said again.

aMtarvo bhavitA zApaH punaryogamavApsyatha॥ sarvasattvaH suyajJazca svataMtro'yaM bhaviSyati॥ 49॥
When the curse is over you will attain Yoga. Sarvasattva, Suyajña and Svatantra too will attain yogic powers.

pitRprasAdAdyuSmAbhissaMprAptaM sukRtaM bhavet॥ gAM prokSayitvA dharmeNa pitRbhyazcopakalpitAH॥ 50॥
Due to their favour you will attain merit. You have sprinkled the cow and offered it to the Pitṛs.

asmAkaM jJAnasaMyogassarveSAM yogasAdhanam॥ idaM ca kAryaM saMrabdhaM zlokamekamudAhRtam॥ 51॥
We shall acquire knowledge which shall work as the means of Yoga for all. Thīs statement is bold and spirited and is quoted as a verse.

After attaining human life you will attain “Yoga”. After saying this the learned bird Sumanas became silent.

Mārkaṇḍeya said:— Thus I have mentioned their story to you. What more do you wish to hear?
