Śaunaka said:— Please describe in detail all the Manvantaras. I wish to hear of all the Manus too.

Suta said:- Svayambhuva Manu and then Tvarocisa. Uttama and Tamasa and Raivata and Chakshusha.

ete ca manavaH SaT te saMproktA munipuMgava॥ vaivasvato munizreSTha sAMprataM manurucyate ॥ 3॥
And these six Manus have been mentioned to you, O preeminent among the sages. O best of ascetics Vaivasvata is now called Manu.

Savarni and Manu followed by Rauchya and the next Similarly Brahma Savarni and the four Manus.

The past and present as well as those that have not yet come I have also described these Manus as I have heard them.

O sage, these fourteen Manvantaras extending over the period past, present and the future have been mentioned to you. A Kalpa consisting of a thousand Yugas is constituted by these.

O Śaunaka, listen. I shall explain the sages, their sons and the gods; all are famous. Listen with pleasure.

Marīci, Atri, the holy lord Aṅgiras, Pulaha, Kratu, Pulastya and Vasiṣṭha—these seven are Brahmā’s sons.

O sage, the seven sages are in the northern quarter. In the Svāyambhuva Manvantara there were the gods named Yāmas.

svAyaMbhuvasya putrAste manordaza mahAtmanaH ॥ kIrtitA munizArdUla tatrendro yajJa ucyate ॥ 12॥
These ten sons of the great Manu were born to Svayambhuva O tiger among ascetics it is described that Indra is there called Yajna.

Thus O dear, the first divine Manvantara has been mentioned to you. I shall explain the second one. Know as it is.

UrjastaMbhaH parastaMbha RSabho vasumAM stathA ॥ jyotiSmAndyutimAMzcaiva rociSmAnsaptamastathA ॥ 14 ॥
The pillar of energy is the pillar of the other and the bull is the pillar of the earth. The seventh was Jyotishman and Andyutima and Rochishman.

ete maharSayo jJeyAstatrendro rocanastathA ॥ devAzca tuSitA nAma smRtAH svArociSeM'tare ॥ 15 ॥
These great sages are to be understood as Indra and Rocana The devas are also mentioned as Tushita in the other self-brightness.

Harighna, Sukriti, Jyoti, Yomurti and Ayasmaya. The sky and the sun are also famous in the mind.

These ten sons of the great Manu were born to Svarocisa O tiger among ascetics they have been described for their great prowess and valor.

vasiSThaputrAH saptAsanvAsiSThA iti vizrutAH॥ hiraNyagarbhasya sutA UrjA nAma mahaujasaH ॥ 19॥
The seven sons of Vasishta were known as Vasishta Hiranyagarbha had a daughter named Urja who was very powerful.

RSayo'tra samAkhyAtAH kIrtyamAnAnnibodha me॥ auttameyA RSizreSTha dazaputrA manoH smRtAH॥ 20॥
The sages have been described here and listen to me as they are being recited. O best of sages the ten sons of Manu are mentioned as Auttameya.

iSa Urjita Urjazca madhurmAdhava eva ca॥ zucizzukravahazcaiva nabhaso nabha eva ca ॥ 21॥
This is energetic and energetic and sweet and Madhava. Shuchi and Shukravaha are the names of the sky.

There is the bull and the devas Satyaveda and Shruta O sage there lived Indra named Satyajit lord of the three worlds.

This third and supreme manvatara is described. O sage I shall now describe to you the fourth manvatara Listen.

gArgyaH pRthustathA vAgmI jayo dhAtA kapInakaH ॥ kapIvAnsaptaRSayaH satyA devagaNAstathA ॥ 24 ॥
The seven sages were Gārgya, Pṛthu, Vāgmin, Janya, Dhātā, Kapīnaka and the seventh Kapīvat. The groups of gods were Satyas.

O sage hear from the sons of Manu that Indra is to be understood as Trishikha The boat of gambling is the source of austerity and the spear is the source of heat.

He was a great sage who was immaculate in his austerities and wielded a bow and a sword These ten sons of Tamasa are mentioned as great vows.

tAmasasyAMtaraM caiva mano me kathitaM tava ॥ caturthaM paJcamaM tAta zRNu manvaMtaraM param ॥ 27 ॥
I have described to you the difference between the mind and the darkness O dear son hear now the fourth and fifth Manu.

Devabahu and Jaya and the sage Vedashiras. They are golden-haired, rain-bearing and raised-armed and drink the moon.

These other seven sages are also devoted to the eyes of truth The devas and the natures of beings, passion and austerity.

tatreMdro vibhunAmA ca trailokyAdhipatistathA ॥ raivatAkhyo manustatra jJeyastAmasasodaraH ॥ 30 ॥
Indra was named Vibhu and he was the lord of the three worlds. The name of the Manu was Raivata. He shall be known as the brother of Tāmasa.

अर्जुनः पंक्तिविंध्यो वा दयायास्त नया मुने ॥ महता तपसा युक्ता मेरुपृष्ठे वसंति हि ॥ ३१ ॥
arjunaH paMktiviMdhyo vA dayAyAsta nayA mune ॥ mahatA tapasA yuktA merupRSThe vasaMti hi ॥ 31 ॥
O sage, Arjuna, Paṅktivindhya and others shall be known as his sons. They are endowed with great penance. They stay on the mountain Meru.

रुचेः प्रजापतिः पुत्रो रौच्यो नाम मनुः स्मृतः ॥ भूत्या चोत्पादितो देव्यां भौत्यो नामाभवत्सुतः ॥ ३२ ॥
ruceH prajApatiH putro raucyo nAma manuH smRtaH ॥ bhUtyA cotpAdito devyAM bhautyo nAmAbhavatsutaH ॥ 32 ॥
Raucya son of Ruci the patriarch was the Manu. His son born of the queen Bhūti was Bhautya.

anAgatAzca saptaite kalpe'sminmanavassmRtAH ॥ anAgatAzca saptaiva smRtA divi maharSayaH ॥ 33 ॥
The future Manus in this Kalpa will be seven. The future great sages will also be seven in each Manvantara in the heaven.

rAmo vyAsastathAtreyo dIptimAnsu bahuzrutaH॥ bharadvAjastathA drauNirazvatthAmA mahAdyutiH॥ 34॥
Rāma, Vyāsa, Ātreya, Dīptimat, Subahuśruta, Bharadvāja, and the lustrous Aśvatthāman son of Droṇa will be seven sages in this Manvantara.

gautamasyAtmajazcaiva zaradvAn gautamaH kRpaH ॥ kauziko gAlavazcaiva ruruH kazyapa eva ca ॥ 35॥
Gautama's son was Sharadvan and Gautama's son was Kripa. Kausika, Galva, Ruru and Kasyapa.

ete sapta mahAtmAno bhaviSyA munisattamAH ॥ devAzcAnAgatAstatra trayaH proktAssvayaMbhuvA ॥ 36॥
These seven great souls will become the foremost of sages The three devas who did not come there were mentioned by Svayambhuva.

They were also the sons of Maricha the great Kasyapa Their son Virocana will be Bali Indra.

Viṣāṅga and Avanīvān were the sons of Sumantha and Dhṛtimaṇvasu Suri Surakhya Vishnu and King Sumati.

Savarni and Manu will have ten sons, O Saunaka. Here I have described the eighth and listen to the ninth difference.
