zaunaka uvAca॥ zrutaM me mahadAkhyAnaM yattvayA parikIrtitam ॥ sanatkumArakAleyasaMvAdaM paramArthadam ॥ 1॥
Śaunaka said:— The great narrative of the conversation of Sanatkumāra and Vyāsa has been heard by me as narrated by you. It has bestowed the knowledge of truth.

अतोहं श्रोतुमिच्छामि यथा सर्गस्तु ब्रह्मणः ॥ समुत्पन्नं तु मे ब्रूहि यथा व्यासाच्च ते श्रुतम् ॥ २॥
atohaM zrotumicchAmi yathA sargastu brahmaNaH ॥ samutpannaM tu me brUhi yathA vyAsAcca te zrutam ॥ 2॥
Now I wish to hear about the creation of Brahmā, the manner of its origin and the way in which you heard it from Vyāsa.

सूत उवाच ॥ मुने शृणु कथां दिव्यां सर्वपापप्रणाशिनीम् ॥ कथ्यमानां मया चित्रां बह्वर्थां श्रुतविस्तराम् ॥ ३ ॥
sUta uvAca ॥ mune zRNu kathAM divyAM sarvapApapraNAzinIm ॥ kathyamAnAM mayA citrAM bahvarthAM zrutavistarAm ॥ 3 ॥
Sūta said:— O sage, listen to the divine story that destroys all sins; the variegated story that is being described by me; the story full of meaning and well known details.

यश्चैनां पाठयेत्तां च शृणुयाद्वाऽप्यभीक्ष्णशः ॥ स्ववंशधारणं कृत्वा स्वर्गलोके महीयते ॥ ४ ॥
yazcainAM pAThayettAM ca zRNuyAdvA'pyabhIkSNazaH ॥ svavaMzadhAraNaM kRtvA svargaloke mahIyate ॥ 4 ॥
He who teaches or hears this story repeatedly sustains his family and is honoured in the world of heaven.

प्रधानं पुरुषो यत्तन्नित्यं सदसदात्मकम् ॥ प्रधानपुरुषो भूत्वा निर्ममे लोकभावनः ॥ ५ ॥
pradhAnaM puruSo yattannityaM sadasadAtmakam ॥ pradhAnapuruSo bhUtvA nirmame lokabhAvanaH ॥ 5 ॥
That which is the principal Purusha is eternally composed of cause and effect. He became the chief person and created the world.

स्रष्टारं सर्वभूतानां नारायणपरायणम् ॥ तं वै विद्धि मुनिश्रेष्ठ ब्रह्माणममितौजसम् ॥ ६ ॥
sraSTAraM sarvabhUtAnAM nArAyaNaparAyaNam ॥ taM vai viddhi munizreSTha brahmANamamitaujasam ॥ 6 ॥
He is the creator of all beings and devoted to Lord Nārāyaṇa. O best of ascetics know him to be the immeasurably powerful Brahman.

यस्मादकल्पयत्कल्पान्तमग्राश्शुचयो यतः ॥ भवंति मुनिशार्दूल नमस्तस्मै स्वयम्भुवे ॥ ७॥
yasmAdakalpayatkalpAntamagrAzzucayo yataH ॥ bhavaMti munizArdUla namastasmai svayambhuve ॥ 7॥
O leading sage, obeisance to that Self-born being from whom the Kalpas and all beings originate.

तस्मै हिरण्यगर्भाय पुरुषायेश्वराय च ॥ नमस्कृत्य प्रवक्ष्यामि भूयः सर्गमनुत्तमम् ॥ ८॥
tasmai hiraNyagarbhAya puruSAyezvarAya ca ॥ namaskRtya pravakSyAmi bhUyaH sargamanuttamam ॥ 8॥
After bowing to that Puruṣa, lord Hiraṇyagarbha, I shall explain the excellent mode of creation again.

ब्रह्मा स्रष्टा हरिः पाता संहर्ता च महेश्वरः ॥ तस्य सर्गस्य नान्योऽस्ति काले काले तथा गते ॥ ९ ॥
brahmA sraSTA hariH pAtA saMhartA ca mahezvaraH ॥ tasya sargasya nAnyo'sti kAle kAle tathA gate ॥ 9 ॥
Brahmā is the creator; Viṣṇu is the protector and Śíva is the annihilator. Even when the time passes there is no other cause of that creation.

सोऽपि स्वयंभूर्भगवान्सिसृक्षुर्विविधाः प्रजाः ॥ अप एव ससर्जादौ तासु वीर्यमवासृजत् ॥ १०॥
so'pi svayaMbhUrbhagavAnsisRkSurvividhAH prajAH ॥ apa eva sasarjAdau tAsu vIryamavAsRjat ॥ 10॥
Being self-born himself the lord, desirous of creating various subjects, created only the waters first. He then instilled virility into them.

आपो नारा इति प्रोक्ता आपो वै नरसूनवः ॥ अयनं तस्य ताः पूर्वं तेन नारायणः स्मृतः ॥ ११ ॥
Apo nArA iti proktA Apo vai narasUnavaH ॥ ayanaM tasya tAH pUrvaM tena nArAyaNaH smRtaH ॥ 11 ॥
The waters are called Nāra (belonging to Nara). The waters are the progenies of Nara. Since waters had been his abode he is called Nārāyaṇa.

हिरण्यवर्णमभवत्तदंडमुदकेशयम् ॥ तत्र जज्ञे स्वयं ब्रह्मा स्वयंभूरिति विश्रुतः ॥ १२ ॥
hiraNyavarNamabhavattadaMDamudakezayam ॥ tatra jajJe svayaM brahmA svayaMbhUriti vizrutaH ॥ 12 ॥
The Egg floating in the water assumed golden colour. Brahma himself famous as the self-born was born there.

हिरण्यगर्भो भगवानुषित्वा परिवत्सरम् ॥ तदंडमकरोद्द्वैधं दिवं भूमि च निर्ममे ॥ १३ ॥
hiraNyagarbho bhagavAnuSitvA parivatsaram ॥ tadaMDamakaroddvaidhaM divaM bhUmi ca nirmame ॥ 13 ॥
After staying there for a year, lord Hiraṇyagarbha, dichotomised that egg and created heaven and earth.

अधोऽथोर्द्ध्वं प्रयुक्तानि भुवनानि चतुर्द्दश ॥ तयोश्शकलयोर्मध्य आकाशममृजत्प्रभुः ॥ १४॥
adho'thorddhvaM prayuktAni bhuvanAni caturddaza ॥ tayozzakalayormadhya AkAzamamRjatprabhuH ॥ 14॥
Fourteen worlds were created including those above and below. With the intervening space between those two pieces the lord created the ether.

अप्सु पारिप्लवां पृथ्वीं दिशश्च दशधा दिवि ॥ तत्र काले मनो वाचं कामक्रोधावथो रतिम्॥ १५॥
apsu pAriplavAM pRthvIM dizazca dazadhA divi ॥ tatra kAle mano vAcaM kAmakrodhAvatho ratim॥ 15॥
He created the earth floating in the waters and the ten quarters in the firmament. Then he created the mind, the speech, love and anger and the sexual delight.

मरीचिमत्र्यंगिरसौ पुलस्त्यं पुलहं क्रतुम ॥ वसिष्ठं तु महतेजास्सोऽसृजत्सप्त मानसान्॥ १६ ॥
marIcimatryaMgirasau pulastyaM pulahaM kratuma ॥ vasiSThaM tu mahatejAsso'sRjatsapta mAnasAn॥ 16 ॥
The excessively brilliant creator created seven mental sons, the sages, Marīci, Atri, Aṅgiras, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu and Vasiṣṭha.

सप्त बह्माण इत्येते पुराणे निश्चयं गताः ॥ ततोऽसृजत्पुनर्ब्रह्मा रुद्रान्क्रोधसमुद्भवान् ॥ १७ ॥
sapta bahmANa ityete purANe nizcayaM gatAH ॥ tato'sRjatpunarbrahmA rudrAnkrodhasamudbhavAn ॥ 17 ॥
They have been decisively termed the seven Brahmās in the Purāṇas. Brahmā again created the Rudras arising from anger.

सनत्कुमारं च ऋषिं सर्वेषामपि पूर्वजम् ॥ सप्त चैते प्रजायंते पश्चाद्रुद्राश्च सर्वतः ॥ १८ ॥
sanatkumAraM ca RSiM sarveSAmapi pUrvajam ॥ sapta caite prajAyaMte pazcAdrudrAzca sarvataH ॥ 18 ॥
He created the sage Sanatkumāra too, the eldest of all. They are thus seven born. The Rudras were born afterwards.

अतस्सनत्कुमारस्तु तेजस्संक्षिप्य तिष्ठति ॥ तेषां सप्तमहावंशा दिव्या देवर्षिपूजिताः ॥ १९॥
atassanatkumArastu tejassaMkSipya tiSThati ॥ teSAM saptamahAvaMzA divyA devarSipUjitAH ॥ 19॥
Sanatkumāra stays with controlled brilliance. From them seven great families originated, all being divine and worshipped by the celestial sages.

प्रजायन्ते क्रियावन्तो महर्षिभिरलंकृताः ॥ विद्युतोऽशनि मेघांश्च रोहितेन्द्रधनूंषि च ॥ २०॥
prajAyante kriyAvanto maharSibhiralaMkRtAH ॥ vidyuto'zani meghAMzca rohitendradhanUMSi ca ॥ 20॥
Endowed with sacred rites they were born along with the other Sages. The lightning, the thunderbolt, the red clouds and the rainbow were created.

पयांसि च ससर्जादौ पर्जन्यं च ससर्ज ह ॥ ऋचो यजूंषि सामानि निर्ममे यज्ञसिद्धये ॥ २१ ॥
payAMsi ca sasarjAdau parjanyaM ca sasarja ha ॥ Rco yajUMSi sAmAni nirmame yajJasiddhaye ॥ 21 ॥
He created water at the outset. He created the rain-bearing cloud. He created the Ṛks, the Yajus and the Sāmans for facilitating Yajñas.

पूज्यांस्तैरयजन्देवानित्येवमनुशुश्रुम ॥ मुखाद्देवानजनयत्पितॄंश्चैवाथ वक्षसः ॥ प्रजनाच्च मनुष्यान्वै जघनान्निर्ममेऽसुरान् ॥ २२ ॥
pUjyAMstairayajandevAnityevamanuzuzruma ॥ mukhAddevAnajanayatpitRRMzcaivAtha vakSasaH ॥ prajanAcca manuSyAnvai jaghanAnnirmame'surAn ॥ 22 ॥
With these he worshipped the gods worthy of being adored. This is what we had heard. He created the gods from his mouth, the manes from the chest, men through impregnation and the Asuras from his loins.

उच्चावचानि भूतानि गात्रेभ्यस्तस्य जज्ञिरे ॥ आपवस्य प्रजासर्गं सृजतो हि प्रजापतेः ॥ २३॥
uccAvacAni bhUtAni gAtrebhyastasya jajJire ॥ Apavasya prajAsargaM sRjato hi prajApateH ॥ 23॥
Living beings high and low were born of his limbs as the patriarch Āpava generated the creation of the aquatic beings.

सृज्यमानाः प्रजाश्चैव नावर्द्धन्त यदा तदा ॥ द्विधा कृत्वात्मनो देहं स्त्री चैव पुरुषोऽभवत्॥ २४ ॥
sRjyamAnAH prajAzcaiva nAvarddhanta yadA tadA ॥ dvidhA kRtvAtmano dehaM strI caiva puruSo'bhavat॥ 24 ॥
When the beings created did not increase he dichotomised his body and became man and woman.

ससृजेऽथ प्रजास्सर्वा महिम्ना व्याप्य विश्वतः ॥ विराजमसृजद्विष्णुस्स सृष्टः पुरुषो विराट् ॥ २५ ॥
sasRje'tha prajAssarvA mahimnA vyApya vizvataH ॥ virAjamasRjadviSNussa sRSTaH puruSo virAT ॥ 25 ॥
With his greatness he persuaded the universe and created the people. Viṣṇu created the Virāṭ (the cosmic being). Thus the Puruṣa Virāṭ was created.

द्वितीयं तं मनुं विद्धि मनोरन्तरमेव च ॥ स वैराजः प्रजास्सर्वास्ससर्ज पुरुषः प्रभुः ॥ २६ ॥
dvitIyaM taM manuM viddhi manorantarameva ca ॥ sa vairAjaH prajAssarvAssasarja puruSaH prabhuH ॥ 26 ॥
Know that he was another Manu that began the age. That lord, Puruṣa, created all the subjects out of Vairāja.

नारायणविसर्गस्य प्रजास्तस्याप्ययोनिजः ॥ आयुष्मान्कीर्तिमान्धन्यः प्रजावांश्चाभवत्ततः ॥ २७॥
nArAyaNavisargasya prajAstasyApyayonijaH ॥ AyuSmAnkIrtimAndhanyaH prajAvAMzcAbhavattataH ॥ 27॥
The creations of Viṣṇu were not born of womb. They were long-lived, famous, blessed and possessed of progeny.

इत्येवमादिसर्गस्ते वर्णितो मुनिसत्तम ॥ आदिसर्गं विदित्वैवं यथेष्टां प्राप्नुयाद्गतिम् ॥ २८ ॥
ityevamAdisargaste varNito munisattama ॥ AdisargaM viditvaivaM yatheSTAM prApnuyAdgatim ॥ 28 ॥
O excellent sage, thus the primeval creation has been narrated to you on knowing which one attains his cherished goal.
