devyuvAca ॥ devadeva mahAdeva kathitaM kAlavaMcanam॥ zabdabrahmasvarUpaM ca yogalakSaNamuttamam॥ 1॥
Devi said:- O God of gods, O Mahadeva, this is the deception of time. and the form of the Brahman of sound is the best characteristic of Yoga.

कथितं ते समासेनच्छायिकं ज्ञानमुत्तमम्॥ विस्तरेण समाख्याहि योगिनां हितकाम्यया ॥ २ ॥
kathitaM te samAsenacchAyikaM jJAnamuttamam॥ vistareNa samAkhyAhi yoginAM hitakAmyayA ॥ 2 ॥
I have briefly described to you the excellent knowledge of the shadow. Please explain in detail for the benefit of the yogis.

॥ शंकर उवाच ॥ शृणु देवि प्रवक्ष्यामिच्छायापुरुषलक्षणम् ॥ यज्ज्ञात्वा पुरुषः सम्यक्सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते ॥ ३॥
॥ zaMkara uvAca ॥ zRNu devi pravakSyAmicchAyApuruSalakSaNam ॥ yajjJAtvA puruSaH samyaksarvapApaiH pramucyate ॥ 3॥
Śiva said:— O goddess, listen. I shall explain the characteristics of the Chāyāpuruṣa, on knowing which man becomes released from all sins.

सूर्य्यं हि पृष्ठतः कृत्वा सोमं वा वरवर्णिनि ॥ शुक्लाम्बरधरस्स्रग्वी गंधधूपादिवासितः ॥ ४॥
sUryyaM hi pRSThataH kRtvA somaM vA varavarNini ॥ zuklAmbaradharassragvI gaMdhadhUpAdivAsitaH ॥ 4॥
The sun or the moon is behind you, O beautiful one. He was dressed in white clothes and wore a garland and smelled of fragrant incense.

संस्मरेन्मे महामंत्रं सर्वकामफलप्रदम्॥ नवात्मकं पिंडभूतं स्वां छायां संनिरीक्षयेत् ॥ ५ ॥
saMsmarenme mahAmaMtraM sarvakAmaphalapradam॥ navAtmakaM piMDabhUtaM svAM chAyAM saMnirIkSayet ॥ 5 ॥
Let him remember this great mantra which bestows the fruits of all desires. One should observe his own shadow which has become a nine-fold mass.

दृष्ट्वा तां पुनराकाशे श्वेतवर्णस्वरूपिणीम् ॥ स पश्यत्येकभावस्तु शिवं परमकारणम्॥ ६॥
dRSTvA tAM punarAkAze zvetavarNasvarUpiNIm ॥ sa pazyatyekabhAvastu zivaM paramakAraNam॥ 6॥
Seeing her again in the sky in the form of a white woman He sees, however, with oneness, the auspicious Supreme Cause.

ब्रह्मप्राप्तिर्भवेत्तस्य कालविद्भिरितीरितम् ॥ ब्रह्महत्यादिकैः पापैर्मुच्यते नात्र संशयः ॥ ७॥
brahmaprAptirbhavettasya kAlavidbhiritIritam ॥ brahmahatyAdikaiH pApairmucyate nAtra saMzayaH ॥ 7॥
It is said by the scholars of time that he attains the Absolute Truth. There is no doubt that one is freed from the sins of killing a brahmin.

शिरोहीनं यदा पश्येत्षड्भिर्मासैर्भवेत्क्षयः॥ समस्तं वाङ्मयं तस्य योगिनस्तु यथा तथा॥ ८॥
zirohInaM yadA pazyetSaDbhirmAsairbhavetkSayaH॥ samastaM vAGmayaM tasya yoginastu yathA tathA॥ 8॥
If he finds the shadow-person headless, the entire power of oral expression of practising Yogin becomes eliminated within six months.

शुक्ले धर्मं विजानीयात्कृष्णे पापं विनिर्दिशेत्॥ रक्ते बंधं विजानीयात्पीते विद्विषमादिशेत्॥ ९॥
zukle dharmaM vijAnIyAtkRSNe pApaM vinirdizet॥ rakte baMdhaM vijAnIyAtpIte vidviSamAdizet॥ 9॥
If the shadow is white, know that it is an indication of virtue; if it is black, it indicates sin; if it is red, it indicates bondage and if it is yellow it indicates an enemy.

विवाहो बंधुनाशस्स्याद्द्वितुंडे चैव क्षुद्भयम् ॥ विकटौ नश्यते भार्य्या विजंघे धनमेव हि ॥ १०॥
vivAho baMdhunAzassyAddvituMDe caiva kSudbhayam ॥ vikaTau nazyate bhAryyA vijaMghe dhanameva hi ॥ 10॥
If the shadow is devoid of arms it indicates death or ruin of kinsmen; if it is without snout it indicates the fear of hunger; if it is devoid of hips, wife dies; if it is devoid of calves it indicates wealth.

पादाभावे विदेशस्स्यादित्येतत्कथितं मया ॥ तद्विचार्य्यं प्रयत्त्नेन पुरुषेण महेश्वरि ॥ ११ ॥
pAdAbhAve videzassyAdityetatkathitaM mayA ॥ tadvicAryyaM prayattnena puruSeNa mahezvari ॥ 11 ॥
If there is no foot, exile to a foreign country takes place. This has been mentioned by me. O great goddess, this shall be carefully considered by the people.

सम्यक्तं पुरुषं दृष्ट्वा संनिवेश्यात्मनात्मनि ॥ जपेन्नवात्मकं मंत्रं हृदयं मे महेश्वरि ॥ १२ ॥
samyaktaM puruSaM dRSTvA saMnivezyAtmanAtmani ॥ japennavAtmakaM maMtraM hRdayaM me mahezvari ॥ 12 ॥
(Practising still further and) seeing the shadow-person perfectly and keeping it within the Ātman through the Ātman, O goddess, the aspirant shall repeat the nine-syllabled Mantra in the heart.

वत्सरे विगते मंत्री तन्नास्ति यन्न साधयेत् ॥ अणिमादिगुणानष्टौ खेचरत्वं प्रपद्यते ॥ १३॥
vatsare vigate maMtrI tannAsti yanna sAdhayet ॥ aNimAdiguNAnaSTau khecaratvaM prapadyate ॥ 13॥
If a year passes by there will be nothing that the repeater of the mantra cannot achieve. He attains the eight Siddhis, Aṇimā and others and the ability to walk through the sky.

पुनरन्यत्प्रवक्ष्यामि शक्तिं ज्ञातुं दुरासदाम् ॥ प्रत्यक्षं दृश्यते लोके ज्ञानिनामग्रतः स्थितम् ॥ १४॥
punaranyatpravakSyAmi zaktiM jJAtuM durAsadAm ॥ pratyakSaM dRzyate loke jJAninAmagrataH sthitam ॥ 14॥
I shall mention another power which is inscrutable but is known to those possessed of perfect knowledge.

अज्ञेया लिख्यते लोके या सर्पीकृतकुण्डली ॥ सा मात्रा यानसंस्थापि दृश्यते न च पठ्यते ॥ १५॥
ajJeyA likhyate loke yA sarpIkRtakuNDalI ॥ sA mAtrA yAnasaMsthApi dRzyate na ca paThyate ॥ 15॥
The earrings made of snakes are written as unknown in this world That mother is seen and not read even when she is in the vehicle.

ब्रह्माण्डमूर्ध्निगा या च स्तुता वेदैस्तु नित्यशः ॥ जननी सर्वविद्यानां गुप्तविद्येति गीयते ॥ १६ ॥
brahmANDamUrdhnigA yA ca stutA vedaistu nityazaH ॥ jananI sarvavidyAnAM guptavidyeti gIyate ॥ 16 ॥
She is the head of the universe and is praised by the Vedas daily. The mother of all knowledge is sung as the secret knowledge.

खेचरा सा विनिर्दिष्टा सर्वप्राणिषु संस्थिता ॥ दृश्यादृश्याचला नित्या व्यक्ताव्यक्ता सनातनी ॥ १७ ॥
khecarA sA vinirdiSTA sarvaprANiSu saMsthitA ॥ dRzyAdRzyAcalA nityA vyaktAvyaktA sanAtanI ॥ 17 ॥
It is the lore of traversing the sky. It is stationed in all living beings. It is visible and invisible. It is immovable, eternal, manifest and unmanifest. It is permanent.

अवर्णा वर्णसंयुक्ता प्रोच्यते बिंदुमालिनी ॥ तां पश्यन्सर्वदा योगी कृतकृत्योऽभिजायते ॥ १८॥
avarNA varNasaMyuktA procyate biMdumAlinI ॥ tAM pazyansarvadA yogI kRtakRtyo'bhijAyate ॥ 18॥
It is devoid of colour yet it possesses colour. It is called Bindumālinī. The Yogin who sees it always remains contented.

सर्वतीर्थकृतस्नानाद्भवेद्दानस्य यत्फलम्॥ सर्वयज्ञफलं यच्च मालिन्या दर्शनात्तदा॥ १९॥
sarvatIrthakRtasnAnAdbhaveddAnasya yatphalam॥ sarvayajJaphalaM yacca mAlinyA darzanAttadA॥ 19॥
On seeing Mālinī one attains the fruit of all sacrifices, the benefit of charitable gifts and the ceremonial ablutions in all holy centres.

प्राप्नोत्यत्र न संदेहस्सत्यं वै कथितं मया ॥ सर्वतीर्थेषु यत्स्नात्वा दत्त्वा दानानि सर्वशः ॥ २०॥
prApnotyatra na saMdehassatyaM vai kathitaM mayA ॥ sarvatIrtheSu yatsnAtvA dattvA dAnAni sarvazaH ॥ 20॥
There is no doubt that he will get it because I have told you the truth. That which bathes in all holy places and gives charity in all respects.

सर्वेषां देवि यज्ञानां यत्फलं तल्लभेत्पुमान्॥ किं बहूक्त्या महेशानि सर्वान्कामान्समश्नुते॥ २१॥
sarveSAM devi yajJAnAM yatphalaM tallabhetpumAn॥ kiM bahUktyA mahezAni sarvAnkAmAnsamaznute॥ 21॥
O Devi whatever fruit a man obtains from all sacrifices. What is the use of many words, O great lords, that one attains all desires?

तस्माज्ज्ञानं यथायोगमभ्यसेत्सततं बुधः॥ अभ्यासाज्जायते सिद्धिर्योगोऽभ्यासात्प्रवर्धते॥ २२॥
tasmAjjJAnaM yathAyogamabhyasetsatataM budhaH॥ abhyAsAjjAyate siddhiryogo'bhyAsAtpravardhate॥ 22॥
Hence a sensible person shall cultivate this knowledge as well as Yoga. Siddhi is attained by practice. Yoga is enhanced by practice.

संवित्तिर्लभ्यतेऽभ्यासादभ्यासान्मोक्षमश्नुते॥ अभ्यासस्सततं कार्यो धीमता मोक्षकारणम्॥ २३॥
saMvittirlabhyate'bhyAsAdabhyAsAnmokSamaznute॥ abhyAsassatataM kAryo dhImatA mokSakAraNam॥ 23॥
Perfect realization is attained by practice. Liberation is attained by practice. An intelligent man shall always maintain practice. Practice is the cause of salvation.

इत्येतत्कथितं देवि भुक्तिमुक्तिफलप्रदम्॥ किमन्यत्पृच्छ्यते तत्त्वं वद सत्यं ब्रवीमि ते॥ २४॥
ityetatkathitaM devi bhuktimuktiphalapradam॥ kimanyatpRcchyate tattvaM vada satyaM bravImi te॥ 24॥
O goddess, I have mentioned that all which bestows the benefit of worldly pleasures and salvation. What other tenet do you propose? Tell me, I shall tell you the truth.

सूत उवाच॥ इति श्रुत्वा ब्रह्मपुत्रवचनं परमार्थदम्॥ प्रसन्नोऽभूदति व्यासः पाराशर्य्यो मुनीश्वराः॥ २५॥
sUta uvAca॥ iti zrutvA brahmaputravacanaM paramArthadam॥ prasanno'bhUdati vyAsaH pArAzaryyo munIzvarAH॥ 25॥
Sūta said:— O great sages, on hearing these words of Sanatkumāra, son of Brahmā, the words bestowing the knowledge of truth, Vyāsa, son of Parāśara, was much delighted.

सनत्कुमारं सर्वज्ञं ब्रह्मपुत्रं कृपानिधिम्॥ व्यासः परमसंतुष्टः प्रणनाम मुहुर्मुहुःष॥ २६॥
sanatkumAraM sarvajJaM brahmaputraM kRpAnidhim॥ vyAsaH paramasaMtuSTaH praNanAma muhurmuhuHSa॥ 26॥
The extremely delighted Vyāsa, bowed again and again to the omniscient son of Brahmā, Sanatkumāra, the storehouse of mercy.

tatastuSTAva taM vyAsaH kAleyassa munIzvaraH॥ sanatkumAraM munayaH suravijJAnasAgaram॥ 27॥
O sages, then the great sage Vyāsa, eulogised Sanatkumāra, the ocean of the perfect knowledge of the deities.

व्यास उवाच ॥ कृतार्थोऽहं मुनिश्रेष्ठ ब्रह्मत्वं मे त्वया कृतम् ॥ नमस्तेऽस्तु नमस्तेऽतु धन्यस्त्वं ब्रह्मवित्तमः ॥ २८ ॥
vyAsa uvAca ॥ kRtArtho'haM munizreSTha brahmatvaM me tvayA kRtam ॥ namaste'stu namaste'tu dhanyastvaM brahmavittamaH ॥ 28 ॥
Vyāsa said:— O great sage, I am satisfied. The position of Brahma has been assigned to me. Obeisance be to you. You are blessed. You are the most excellent of all knowers of Brahman.

सूत उवाच ॥ इति स्तुत्वा स कालेयो ब्रह्मपुत्रं महामुनिम् ॥ तूष्णीं बभूव सुप्रीतः परमानंदनिर्भरः ॥ २९॥
sUta uvAca ॥ iti stutvA sa kAleyo brahmaputraM mahAmunim ॥ tUSNIM babhUva suprItaH paramAnaMdanirbharaH ॥ 29॥
Sūta said:— After eulogising the great sage the son of Brahmā, Vyāsa, the grandson of Brahmā, kept silent. He was extremely delighted. He was filled with great bliss.

ब्रह्मपुत्रस्तमामंत्र्य पूजितस्तेन शौनकः ॥ ययौ स्वधाम सुप्रीतो व्यासोऽपि प्रीतमानसः ॥ ३० ॥
brahmaputrastamAmaMtrya pUjitastena zaunakaH ॥ yayau svadhAma suprIto vyAso'pi prItamAnasaH ॥ 30 ॥
O Śaunaka, Sanatkumāra, son of Brahmā, took leave of him. Worshipped by Vyāsa he returned to his abode. Vyāsa too left for his abode with his mind full of delight.

इति मे वर्णितो विप्राः सुखदः परमार्थयुक् ॥ सनत्कुमारकालेयसंवादो ज्ञानवर्द्धनः ॥ ३१॥
iti me varNito viprAH sukhadaH paramArthayuk ॥ sanatkumArakAleyasaMvAdo jJAnavarddhanaH ॥ 31॥
O brahmins, thus I have described to you the conversation between Sanatkumāra and Vyāsa. It deals with truth. It is pleasing. It enhances knowledge.
