सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ शृणु व्यास महाबुद्धे देहस्याशुचितां मुने ॥ महत्त्वं च स्वभावस्य समासात्कथयाम्यहम् ॥ १॥
sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ zRNu vyAsa mahAbuddhe dehasyAzucitAM mune ॥ mahattvaM ca svabhAvasya samAsAtkathayAmyaham ॥ 1॥
Sanatkumāra said:— O Vyāsa, O highly intelligent sage, listen to the impurity of the body and the greatness of good feelings. I shall explain briefly.

शुक्रशोणितसंयोगाद्देहस्संजायते यतः॥ नित्यं विण्मूत्रसंपूर्णस्तेनायमशुचिस्स्मृतः॥ २॥
zukrazoNitasaMyogAddehassaMjAyate yataH॥ nityaM viNmUtrasaMpUrNastenAyamazucissmRtaH॥ 2॥
The body is considered impure because it is produced by the mingling of semen and blood and is always full of faeces and urine.

यथांतर्विष्ठया पूर्णश्शुचिमान्न बहिर्घटः ॥ शोध्यमानो हि देहोऽयं तेनायमशुचिस्ततः ॥ ३ ॥
yathAMtarviSThayA pUrNazzucimAnna bahirghaTaH ॥ zodhyamAno hi deho'yaM tenAyamazucistataH ॥ 3 ॥
Just as a pot, full of faeces cannot become pure even when washed outside, so also the body washed outside cannot become pure. Hence it is impure.

संप्राप्यातिपवित्राणि पंचगव्यहवींषि चा। अशुचित्वं क्षणाद्यांति किमन्यदशुचिस्ततः ॥ ४॥
saMprApyAtipavitrANi paMcagavyahavIMSi cA। azucitvaM kSaNAdyAMti kimanyadazucistataH ॥ 4॥
Even after taking in the sanctifying Pañcagavya, Havis (Ghee oblation) etc. the body becomes impure the next moment. What else is more impure than this body?

hRdyAnyapyannapAnAni yaM prApya surabhINi ca ॥ azucitvaM prayAMtyAzu kimanyadazucistataH ॥ 5॥
Even after taking in sweet, fragrant and delicious foodstuffs and drinks the body becomes impure quickly. What else is more impure than this.

he janAH kinna pazyaMti yanniryAti dinedine ॥ svadehAtkazmalaM pUtistadAdhAraH kathaM zuciH ॥ 6 ॥
O men, don’t you see dirty and foetal matter coming out of your bodies day by day. How can the receptacle of such matter be pure.?

देहस्संशोध्यमानोऽपि पंचगव्यकुशांबुभिः ॥ घृष्यमाण इवांगारो निर्मलत्वं न गच्छति ॥ ७ ॥
dehassaMzodhyamAno'pi paMcagavyakuzAMbubhiH ॥ ghRSyamANa ivAMgAro nirmalatvaM na gacchati ॥ 7 ॥
Even if the body is sprinkled with the waters of the holy Kuśa grass and smeared with Pañcagavya, it will not become free from dirt like charcoal even when it is rubbed and polished.

स्रोतांसि यस्य सततं प्रभवंति गिरेरिव ॥ कफमूत्रपुरीषाद्यैस्स देहश्शुध्यते कथम् ॥ ८॥
srotAMsi yasya satataM prabhavaMti gireriva ॥ kaphamUtrapurISAdyaissa dehazzudhyate katham ॥ 8॥
Like the perennial flow of the springs of a mountain the vessels of the body discharge phlegm, urine, faeces and other types of filth. How can that body become clean?

सर्वाशुचिनिधानस्य शरीरस्य न विद्यते ॥ शुचिरेकः प्रदेशोऽपि विण्मूत्रस्य दृतेरिव ॥ ९ ॥
sarvAzucinidhAnasya zarIrasya na vidyate ॥ zucirekaH pradezo'pi viNmUtrasya dRteriva ॥ 9 ॥
There is not even a single clean spot on the body—the receptacle of all types of filth and a leather bag of faeces and urine.

सृष्ट्वात्मदेहस्रोतांसि मृत्तोयैः शोध्यते करः ॥ तथाप्यशुचिभांडस्य न विभ्रश्यति किं करः ॥ १० ॥
sRSTvAtmadehasrotAMsi mRttoyaiH zodhyate karaH ॥ tathApyazucibhAMDasya na vibhrazyati kiM karaH ॥ 10 ॥
After touching the tips of the vessels of one’s own body the hand is washed with sand and water. Still the persons who are slaves to this filthy body do not feel.

कायस्सुगंधधूपाद्यैर्य न्नेनापि सुसंस्कृतः ॥ न जहाति स्वभावं स श्वपुच्छमिव नामितम्॥ ११॥
kAyassugaMdhadhUpAdyairya nnenApi susaMskRtaH ॥ na jahAti svabhAvaM sa zvapucchamiva nAmitam॥ 11॥
Inspite of being smeared and sanctified assiduously by sweet scents, incense and other things the body does not eschew its nature like the curved tail of a dog.

यथा जात्यैव कृष्णोर्थः शुक्लस्स्यान्न ह्युपायतः॥ संशोद्ध्यमानापि तथा भवेन्मूर्तिर्न निर्मला ॥ १२ ॥
yathA jAtyaiva kRSNorthaH zuklassyAnna hyupAyataH॥ saMzoddhyamAnApi tathA bhavenmUrtirna nirmalA ॥ 12 ॥
Just as an object, naturally black, cannot become white by any means, so also the physical body does not become clean though it is scrubbed and cleaned.

जिघ्रन्नपि स्वदुर्गंधं पश्यन्नपि स्वकं मलम् ॥ न विरज्येत लोकोऽयं पीडयन्नपि नासिकाम् ॥ १३॥
jighrannapi svadurgaMdhaM pazyannapi svakaM malam ॥ na virajyeta loko'yaM pIDayannapi nAsikAm ॥ 13॥
Though he smells his own noxious odour, though he sees his own dirt, no man becomes detached and keeps his hand on his nose.

अहो मोहस्य माहात्म्यं येनेदं छादितं जगत् ॥ शीघ्रं पश्यन्स्वकं दोषं कायस्य न विरज्यते ॥ १४॥
aho mohasya mAhAtmyaM yenedaM chAditaM jagat ॥ zIghraM pazyansvakaM doSaM kAyasya na virajyate ॥ 14॥
Wonderful indeed is this great delusion whereby the whole universe is enveloped. He does not observe the impurities of his body and become disgusted with it.

स्वदेहस्य विगंधेन न विरज्येत यो नरः ॥ विरागकारणं तस्य किमेतदुपदिश्यते ॥ १५ ॥
svadehasya vigaMdhena na virajyeta yo naraH ॥ virAgakAraNaM tasya kimetadupadizyate ॥ 15 ॥
If a man is not detached from the world due to the foetal smell of his own what other cause of detachment can be imparted to him?

सर्वस्यैव जगन्मध्ये देह एवाशुचिर्भवेत् ॥ तन्मलावयवस्पर्शाच्छुचिरप्यशुचिर्भवेत् ॥ १६ ॥
sarvasyaiva jaganmadhye deha evAzucirbhavet ॥ tanmalAvayavasparzAcchucirapyazucirbhavet ॥ 16 ॥
In the midst of the entire universe, the body alone is the most unclean. By touching its filthy limbs even the pure becomes impure.

गंधलेपापनोदार्थ शौचं देहस्य कीर्तितम् ॥ द्वयस्यापगमाच्छुद्धिश्शुद्धस्पर्शाद्विशुध्यति ॥ १७॥
gaMdhalepApanodArtha zaucaM dehasya kIrtitam ॥ dvayasyApagamAcchuddhizzuddhasparzAdvizudhyati ॥ 17॥
The purification of the body is for removing bad odour and sliminess. If both are removed there is purity. The touch of a pure thing also sanctifies it.

गंगातोयेन सर्वेण मृद्भारैः पर्वतोपमैः ॥ आमृत्योराचरेच्छौचं भावदुष्टो न शुध्यति ॥ १८ ॥
gaMgAtoyena sarveNa mRdbhAraiH parvatopamaiH ॥ AmRtyorAcarecchaucaM bhAvaduSTo na zudhyati ॥ 18 ॥
But let him be cleaned with all the waters of the Gaṅgā, with heaps of sand resembling a mountain or let him observe purificatory rites till death, if a man has wicked feelings and emotions he can never be purified.

तीर्थस्नानैस्तपोभिर्वा दुष्टात्मा नैव शुध्यति ॥ श्वदृतिः क्षालिता तीर्थे किं शुद्धिमधिगच्छति ॥ १९ ॥
tIrthasnAnaistapobhirvA duSTAtmA naiva zudhyati ॥ zvadRtiH kSAlitA tIrthe kiM zuddhimadhigacchati ॥ 19 ॥
A vicious soul is not sanctified by the waters in the pilgrim spots nor by austerities. Does the canine hide become pure when washed in a holy river?

अंतर्भावप्रदुष्टस्य विशतोऽपि हुताशनम् ॥ न स्वर्गो नापवर्गश्च देहनिर्दहनं परम् ॥ २०॥
aMtarbhAvapraduSTasya vizato'pi hutAzanam ॥ na svargo nApavargazca dehanirdahanaM param ॥ 20॥
Neither heaven nor salvation can be attained by a man of vicious emotion even if he immolates himself in the holy fire. The only result will be that his body is entirely burnt off.

सर्वेण गांगेन जलेन सम्यङ् मृत्पर्वतेनाप्यथ भावदुष्टः ॥ आजन्मनः स्नानपरो मनुष्यो न शुध्यतीत्येव वयं वदामः ॥ २१ ॥
sarveNa gAMgena jalena samyaG mRtparvatenApyatha bhAvaduSTaH ॥ AjanmanaH snAnaparo manuSyo na zudhyatItyeva vayaM vadAmaH ॥ 21 ॥
We assert that a man of vicious instinct and feeling never becomes pure though he may indulge in ablutions throughout his life with all the waters of the Gaṅgā and a mountain of sand.

प्रज्वाल्य वह्निं घृततैलसिक्तं प्रदक्षिणावर्तशिखं महांतम् ॥ प्रविश्य दग्धस्त्वपि भावदुष्टो न धर्ममाप्नोति फलं न चान्यत ॥ २२ ॥
prajvAlya vahniM ghRtatailasiktaM pradakSiNAvartazikhaM mahAMtam ॥ pravizya dagdhastvapi bhAvaduSTo na dharmamApnoti phalaM na cAnyata ॥ 22 ॥
If a man of defiled emotion gets himself burnt after entering a huge blazing fire kindled by sprinkling ghee and oil and with flames of circular motion he does not become pure.

गंगादितीर्थेषु वसंति मत्स्या देवालये पक्षिगणाश्च नित्यम् ॥ भावोज्झितास्ते न फलं लभंते तीर्थावगाहाच्च तथैव दानात् ॥ २३ ॥
gaMgAditIrtheSu vasaMti matsyA devAlaye pakSigaNAzca nityam ॥ bhAvojjhitAste na phalaM labhaMte tIrthAvagAhAcca tathaiva dAnAt ॥ 23 ॥
Fishes stay in the holy Gaṅgā and other sacred rivers. Flocks of birds stay in the temple. They do not attain any special benefit from the ceremonial ablutions and charitable gifts since they are devoid of holy feelings.

भावशुद्धिः परं शौचं प्रमाणे सर्वकर्मसु ॥ अन्यथाऽऽलिंग्यते कांता भावेन दुहितान्यथा ॥ २४ ॥
bhAvazuddhiH paraM zaucaM pramANe sarvakarmasu ॥ anyathA''liMgyate kAMtA bhAvena duhitAnyathA ॥ 24 ॥
It is the purity of the feelings that is the criterion for the sanctity of rites. The wife is embraced with one feeling and the daughter is embraced with another.

मनसो भिद्यते वृत्तिरभिन्नेष्वपि वस्तुषु ॥ अन्यथैव सुतं नारी चिन्तयत्यन्यथा पतिम् ॥ २५ ॥
manaso bhidyate vRttirabhinneSvapi vastuSu ॥ anyathaiva sutaM nArI cintayatyanyathA patim ॥ 25 ॥
Feelings are different in the mind even if the objects are not different. The same woman is looked at in one way by the son and in another way by the husband.

पश्यध्वमस्य भावस्य महाभाग्यमशेषतः ॥ परिष्वक्तोपि यन्नार्य्या भावहीनं न कामयेत् ॥ २६ ॥
pazyadhvamasya bhAvasya mahAbhAgyamazeSataH ॥ pariSvaktopi yannAryyA bhAvahInaM na kAmayet ॥ 26 ॥
O observe the great fortune in the difference of emotions. The man, though embraced, does not love the woman who is devoid of the feelings of love.

नाद्याद्विविधमन्नाद्यं भक्ष्याणि सुरभीणि च ॥ यदि चिंतां समाधत्ते चित्ते कामादिषु त्रिषु ॥ २७ ॥
nAdyAdvividhamannAdyaM bhakSyANi surabhINi ca ॥ yadi ciMtAM samAdhatte citte kAmAdiSu triSu ॥ 27 ॥
If the three emotions, passion etc. were to create worries in the mind no one would relish different delicious or fragrant stuffs.

गृह्यते तेन भावेन नरो भावाद्विमुच्यते ॥ भावतश्शुचि शुद्धात्मा स्वर्गं मोक्षं च विंदति ॥ २८ ॥
gRhyate tena bhAvena naro bhAvAdvimucyate ॥ bhAvatazzuci zuddhAtmA svargaM mokSaM ca viMdati ॥ 28 ॥
Man is caught hold of by emotions and man can rid himself of emotions. A man purified by pure emotions attains heaven and salvation.

भावेनैकात्मशुद्धात्मा दहञ्जुह्वन्स्तुवन्मृतः ॥ ज्ञानावाप्तेरवाप्याशु लोकान्सुबहुयाजिनाम् ॥ २९ ॥
bhAvenaikAtmazuddhAtmA dahaJjuhvanstuvanmRtaH ॥ jJAnAvApteravApyAzu lokAnsubahuyAjinAm ॥ 29 ॥
Performing Japas, sacrifices and eulogies after purifying the soul with pure emotions a man acquires perfect knowledge and after death he attains the worlds of persons who perform many sacrifices.

ज्ञानामलांभसा पुंसां सद्वैराग्यमृदा पुनः ॥ अविद्यारागविण्मूत्रलेपगंधविशोधनम् ॥ ३० ॥
jJAnAmalAMbhasA puMsAM sadvairAgyamRdA punaH ॥ avidyArAgaviNmUtralepagaMdhavizodhanam ॥ 30 ॥
The purification and removal of the sliminess and bad odour of the faeces and urine of ignorance and passion of men is effected by the pure water of knowledge and the clay of detachment from the world.

एवमेतच्छरीरं हि निसर्गादशुचि स्मृतम् ॥ त्वङ्मात्रसारं निःसारं कदलीसारसन्निभम् ॥ ३१ ॥
evametaccharIraM hi nisargAdazuci smRtam ॥ tvaGmAtrasAraM niHsAraM kadalIsArasannibham ॥ 31 ॥
Thus as the body is naturally unclean it is worthless. Like the inner stump of the plantain tree it has only the outer skin as substantial.

ज्ञात्वैवं दोषवद्देहं यः प्राज्ञश्शिथिलो भवेत् ॥ देह भोगोद्भवाद्भावाच्छमचित्तः प्रसन्नधीः ॥ ३२ ॥
jJAtvaivaM doSavaddehaM yaH prAjJazzithilo bhavet ॥ deha bhogodbhavAdbhAvAcchamacittaH prasannadhIH ॥ 32 ॥
A wise man who knows that the body is thus defective becomes relaxed The body is the source of pleasure and the mind is calm and the mind is happy.

सोऽतिक्रामति संसारं जीवन्मुक्तः प्रजायते ॥ संसारं कदलीसारदृढग्राह्यवतिष्ठते ॥ ३३ ॥
so'tikrAmati saMsAraM jIvanmuktaH prajAyate ॥ saMsAraM kadalIsAradRDhagrAhyavatiSThate ॥ 33 ॥
He transcends this world and is born alive and liberated. The world remains firmly grasped by the banana essence.

एवमेतन्महाकष्टं जन्म दुःखं प्रकीर्तितम् ॥ पुंसामज्ञानदोषेण नानाकार्मवशेन च ॥ ३४ ॥
evametanmahAkaSTaM janma duHkhaM prakIrtitam ॥ puMsAmajJAnadoSeNa nAnAkArmavazena ca ॥ 34 ॥
Thus the misery of life is proclaimed to be grievous and painful to men due to the fault of ignorance and the influence of different activities.

श्लोकार्धेन तु वक्ष्यामि यदुक्तं ग्रन्थकोटिभिः ॥ ममेति परमं दुःखं न ममेति परं सुखम् ॥ ३५ ॥
zlokArdhena tu vakSyAmi yaduktaM granthakoTibhiH ॥ mameti paramaM duHkhaM na mameti paraM sukham ॥ 35 ॥
I shall explain in half a stanza what is mentioned in crores of books. The feeling of “My-ness” is the greatest affliction. The feeling of “not-my-ness” is the greatest joy.

बहवोपीह राजानः परं लोक मितो गताः ॥ निर्ममत्वसमेतास्तु बद्धाश्शतसहस्रशः ॥ ३६॥
bahavopIha rAjAnaH paraM loka mito gatAH ॥ nirmamatvasametAstu baddhAzzatasahasrazaH ॥ 36॥
Hundreds and thousands of monarchs who had been in bondage had attained the greatest world on reaching the Nirmamatva (not-my-ness) state.

गर्भस्थस्य स्मृतिर्यासीत्सा च तस्य प्रणश्यति ॥ संमूर्छितेन दुःखेन योनियन्त्रनिपीडनात् ॥ ३७॥
garbhasthasya smRtiryAsItsA ca tasya praNazyati ॥ saMmUrchitena duHkhena yoniyantranipIDanAt ॥ 37॥
What little recollection the child had while within the womb perishes when his misery develops further on being crushed by the muscular walls of the vaginal passage as if within a machine.

बाह्येन वायुना वास्य मोहसङ्गेन देहिनः ॥ स्पृष्टमात्रेण घोरेण ज्वरस्समुपजायते ॥ ३८॥
bAhyena vAyunA vAsya mohasaGgena dehinaH ॥ spRSTamAtreNa ghoreNa jvarassamupajAyate ॥ 38॥
A great fever overtakes him as soon as the external air touches him or delusion overwhelms him.

तेन ज्वारेण महता सम्मोहश्च प्रजायते ॥ सम्मूढस्य स्मृतिभ्रंशश्शीघ्रं संजायते पुनः ॥ ३९ ॥
tena jvAreNa mahatA sammohazca prajAyate ॥ sammUDhasya smRtibhraMzazzIghraM saMjAyate punaH ॥ 39 ॥
Due to that fever a great fascination overpowers him and deludes him. After being deluded he soon suffers from the loss of memory.

स्मृतिभ्रंशात्ततस्तस्य स्मृतिर्न्नोऽपूर्वकर्मणः॥ रतिः संजायते तूर्णं जन्तोस्तत्रैव जन्मनि ॥ ४० ॥
smRtibhraMzAttatastasya smRtirnno'pUrvakarmaNaH॥ ratiH saMjAyate tUrNaM jantostatraiva janmani ॥ 40 ॥

The passionate and deluded world does not engage in activities beneficial to itself. It does not realise itself nor others nor even the deity.

O good sage, though he has ears man does not listen to what is beneficial to him. Even when he has competent eyes he does not see what is good.

Walking slowly on the level, even path he falters at every step. Even when he has intellect, even when he is enlightened by scholars he does not understand.

Thereby, urged and prompted by great greed he suffers pain and distress in the world. His intellect no longer remembers the sins he committed which he remembered in the womb.

There is again this great misery in infancy (bālya) because the operative power of the sense-organs is not clearly manifest or developed. Even if he wishes he is unable to express or take remedial or preventive measures.

The infant boy may remain somewhere very hungry and thirsty, or lying somewhere he may be crying or he may be eating or drinking faeces and the urine due to delusion.

Then, he feels misery from malice and rivalry. By delusion his eyes become red like those of an infuriated man. Its abandonment is only conducive to misery.

A sick and an aged man is incompetent to strive for virtue, wealth, love and salvation. Hence a young man shall strive for these virtues.
