॥ vyAsa uvAca ॥ brAhmaNatvaM hi duSprApyaM nisargAdbrAhmaNo bhavet ॥ Izvarasya mukhAtkSatraM bAhubhyAmUruto vizaH ॥ 1 ॥
Vyasa said:- Being a Brahmin is difficult to attain and one should be a Brahmin by nature. From the mouth of the lord enter the kṣatriyas with your arms and thighs

padbhyAM zUdrassamutpanna iti tasya mukhAcchrutiH ॥ kimu sthitimadhaHsthAnAdApnuvanti hyato vada ॥ 2 ॥
It is said from his mouth that a śūdra was born from his feet What position do they attain from the lower positions, therefore tell me.

सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ दुष्कृतेन तु कालेय स्थानाद्भ्रश्यन्ति मानवाः ॥ श्रेष्ठं स्थानं समासाद्य तस्माद्रक्षेत पण्डितः ॥ ३ ॥
sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ duSkRtena tu kAleya sthAnAdbhrazyanti mAnavAH ॥ zreSThaM sthAnaM samAsAdya tasmAdrakSeta paNDitaH ॥ 3 ॥
Sanatkumāra said:— O Kāleya, men fall off their status due to evil deeds. Hence, after attaining the high status, the learned man shall preserve it.

यस्तु विप्रत्वमुत्सृज्य क्षत्रयोन्यां प्रसूयते ॥ ब्राह्मण्यात्स परिभ्रष्टः क्षत्रियत्वं निषेवते ॥ ४॥
yastu vipratvamutsRjya kSatrayonyAM prasUyate ॥ brAhmaNyAtsa paribhraSTaH kSatriyatvaM niSevate ॥ 4॥
He who forsakes brahminhood and is born as a Kṣatriya falls off the status of a brahmin and assumes the status of a Kṣatriya.

अधर्मसेवनान्मूढस्तथैव परिवर्तते ॥ जन्मान्तरसहस्राणि तमस्याविशते यतः ॥ ५॥
adharmasevanAnmUDhastathaiva parivartate ॥ janmAntarasahasrANi tamasyAvizate yataH ॥ 5॥
Due to his resorting to evil, the foolish fellow goes on changing thus. He takes thousands of births and plunges himself into gloom.

तस्मात्प्राप्य परं स्थानं प्रमाद्यन्न तु नाशयेत् ॥ स्वस्थानं सर्वदा रक्षेत्प्राप्यापि विपदो नरः ॥ ६ ॥
tasmAtprApya paraM sthAnaM pramAdyanna tu nAzayet ॥ svasthAnaM sarvadA rakSetprApyApi vipado naraH ॥ 6 ॥
Hence after attaining the highest status one should not err or destroy it. Even in the face of adversity one shall always preserve his status.

ब्राह्मणत्वं शुभं प्राप्य ब्राह्मण्यं योऽवमन्यते ॥ भोज्याभोज्यं न जानाति स पुमान्क्षत्रियो भवेत् ॥ ७ ॥
brAhmaNatvaM zubhaM prApya brAhmaNyaM yo'vamanyate ॥ bhojyAbhojyaM na jAnAti sa pumAnkSatriyo bhavet ॥ 7 ॥
After attaining the auspicious brahminhood if a person disrespects brahminhood and does not differentiate between what could be eaten and what could not be eaten he becomes a Kṣatriya.

कर्मणा येन मेधावी शूद्रो वैश्यो हि जायते ॥ तत्ते वक्ष्यामि निखिलं येन वर्णोत्तमो भवेत् ॥ ८ ॥
karmaNA yena medhAvI zUdro vaizyo hi jAyate ॥ tatte vakSyAmi nikhilaM yena varNottamo bhavet ॥ 8 ॥
I shall explain to you entirely that which gives a higher caste whereby an intelligent Śūdra becomes a Vaiśya.

शूद्रकर्म यथोद्दिष्टं शूद्रो भूत्वा समाचरेत् ॥ यथावत्परिचर्य्यां तु त्रिषु वर्णेषु नित्यदा ॥ ९ ॥
zUdrakarma yathoddiSTaM zUdro bhUtvA samAcaret ॥ yathAvatparicaryyAM tu triSu varNeSu nityadA ॥ 9 ॥
Being born a Śūdra, one shall take up the duties of Śūdra as ordained, viz, the due service to the people of the other three castes.

कुरुते कामयानस्तु शूद्रोऽपि वैश्यतां व्रजेत् ॥ यो योजयेद्धनैर्वैश्यो जुह्वानश्च यथाविधि ॥ १० ॥
kurute kAmayAnastu zUdro'pi vaizyatAM vrajet ॥ yo yojayeddhanairvaizyo juhvAnazca yathAvidhi ॥ 10 ॥
If he performs the ritual of desire even a śūdra may attain the status of a vaisya He who engages in wealth is a prostitute and offers sacrifices according to the prescribed rituals.

अग्निहोत्रमुपादाय शेषान्न कृतभोजनः ॥ स वैश्यः क्षत्रियकुले जायते नात्र संशयः ॥ ११ ॥
agnihotramupAdAya zeSAnna kRtabhojanaH ॥ sa vaizyaH kSatriyakule jAyate nAtra saMzayaH ॥ 11 ॥
He took the fire sacrifice and did not eat the rest. That vaisya is undoubtedly born in a kshatriya family.

क्षत्त्रियो जायते यज्ञैसंस्कृतैरात्तदक्षिणैः ॥ अधीते स्वर्गमन्विच्छंस्त्रेताग्निशरणं सदा ॥ १२ ॥
kSattriyo jAyate yajJaisaMskRtairAttadakSiNaiH ॥ adhIte svargamanvicchaMstretAgnizaraNaM sadA ॥ 12 ॥
A kshatriya is born by sacrifices and rituals and gifts. He studied and always sought refuge in the fire of Treta seeking heaven.

आर्द्रहस्तपदो नित्यं क्षितिं धर्मेण पालयेत् ॥ ऋतुकालाभिगामी च स्वभार्य्याधर्मतत्परः॥ १३॥
Ardrahastapado nityaM kSitiM dharmeNa pAlayet ॥ RtukAlAbhigAmI ca svabhAryyAdharmatatparaH॥ 13॥
With wet hands and feet one should always rule the earth with righteousness He used to go to the menstrual cycle and was devoted to the irreligion of his wife.

सर्वातिथ्यं त्रिवर्गस्य भूतेभ्यो दीयतामिति ॥ गोब्राह्मणात्मनोऽर्थं हि संग्रामाभिहतो भवेत् ॥ १४॥
sarvAtithyaM trivargasya bhUtebhyo dIyatAmiti ॥ gobrAhmaNAtmano'rthaM hi saMgrAmAbhihato bhavet ॥ 14॥
Give all hospitality to the beings of the three worlds. For the sake of a cow or a brahmin he may be killed in battle.

तेनाग्निमन्त्रपूतात्मा क्षत्त्रियो ब्राह्मणो भवेत् ॥ विधितो ब्राह्मणो भूत्वा याजकस्तु प्रजायते ॥ १५ ॥
tenAgnimantrapUtAtmA kSattriyo brAhmaNo bhavet ॥ vidhito brAhmaNo bhUtvA yAjakastu prajAyate ॥ 15 ॥
By this a kshatriya whose soul is purified by the mantra of fire becomes a brahmin A priest is born a brahmin according to the prescribed rituals.

स्वकर्मनिरतो नित्यं सत्यवादी जितेन्द्रियः॥ प्राप्यते विपुलस्स्वर्गो देवानामपि वल्लभः॥ १६॥
svakarmanirato nityaM satyavAdI jitendriyaH॥ prApyate vipulassvargo devAnAmapi vallabhaH॥ 16॥
Strictly observing his rites, speaking truth and controlling the sense-organs he derives vast pleasures of heaven. He becomes a favourite of the gods.

ब्रह्मणत्वं हि दुष्प्राप्यं कृच्छ्रेण साध्यते नरैः ॥ ब्राह्मण्यात्सकलं प्राप्य मोक्षश्चापि मुनीश्वर ॥ १७ ॥
brahmaNatvaM hi duSprApyaM kRcchreNa sAdhyate naraiH ॥ brAhmaNyAtsakalaM prApya mokSazcApi munIzvara ॥ 17 ॥
Brahmanhood is difficult to attain and is attained by men with difficulty O lord of sages having attained all that is attained by brahminhood and also liberation.

तस्मात्सर्वप्रयत्नेन ब्राह्मणो धर्मतत्परः ॥ साधनं सर्ववर्गस्य रक्षेद्ब्राह्मण्यमुत्तमम् ॥ १८ ॥
tasmAtsarvaprayatnena brAhmaNo dharmatatparaH ॥ sAdhanaM sarvavargasya rakSedbrAhmaNyamuttamam ॥ 18 ॥
Therefore a brahmin should be devoted to righteousness with all his efforts The means of all classes should be to protect the best of brahmins.

व्यास उवाच ॥ संग्रामस्येह माहात्म्यं त्वयोक्तं मुनिसत्तम ॥ एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं ब्रूहि त्वं वदतां वर ॥ १९ ॥
vyAsa uvAca ॥ saMgrAmasyeha mAhAtmyaM tvayoktaM munisattama ॥ etadicchAmyahaM zrotuM brUhi tvaM vadatAM vara ॥ 19 ॥
Vyāsa said:— O excellent sage, you have mentioned about the glory. O foremost among the eloquent, I wish to hear this. Please mention.

सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ अग्निष्टोमादिभिर्यज्ञैरिष्ट्वा विपुलदक्षिणैः ॥ न तत्फलमवाप्नोति संग्रामे यदवाप्नुयात् ॥ २० ॥
sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ agniSTomAdibhiryajJairiSTvA vipuladakSiNaiH ॥ na tatphalamavApnoti saMgrAme yadavApnuyAt ॥ 20 ॥
Sanatkumara said:- After performing sacrifices such as Agnistomas and offering abundant gifts He does not attain the fruits which he obtains in battle.

इति तत्त्वविदः प्राहुर्यज्ञकर्मविदस्सदा ॥ तस्मात्तत्ते प्रवक्ष्यामि यत्फलं शस्त्रजीविनाम्॥ २१॥
iti tattvavidaH prAhuryajJakarmavidassadA ॥ tasmAttatte pravakSyAmi yatphalaM zastrajIvinAm॥ 21॥
This is what the knowers of the truth and those who know the rituals of sacrifice always say. Therefore I shall tell you the fruits of those who live on weapons.

धर्मलाभोऽर्थलाभश्च यशोलाभस्तथैव च ॥ यश्शूरो वांछते युद्धं विमृन्दन्परवाहिनीम् ॥ २२ ॥
dharmalAbho'rthalAbhazca yazolAbhastathaiva ca ॥ yazzUro vAMchate yuddhaM vimRndanparavAhinIm ॥ 22 ॥
Attainment of righteousness wealth and also fame A hero who desires to fight crushes the army of the enemy.

तस्य धर्मार्थ कामाश्च यज्ञश्चैव सदक्षिणः ॥ परं ह्यभिमुखं दत्त्वा तद्यानं योऽधिरोहति ॥ २३ ॥
tasya dharmArtha kAmAzca yajJazcaiva sadakSiNaH ॥ paraM hyabhimukhaM dattvA tadyAnaM yo'dhirohati ॥ 23 ॥
His religious duties, wealth, desires and sacrifices are his gifts. He who climbs that garden by giving it the other side.

विष्णुलोके स जायेत यश्च युद्धेऽपराजितः ॥ अश्वमेधानवाप्नोति चतुरो न मृतस्स चेत्॥ २४ ॥
viSNuloke sa jAyeta yazca yuddhe'parAjitaH ॥ azvamedhAnavApnoti caturo na mRtassa cet॥ 24 ॥
He who is undefeated in battle will be born in the world of Visnu If the fourth is not dead he obtains the horse sacrifice.

यस्तु शस्त्रमनुत्सृज्य म्रियते वाहिनी मुखे ॥ सम्मुखो वर्तते शूरस्स स्वर्गान्न निवर्तते ॥ २५ ॥
yastu zastramanutsRjya mriyate vAhinI mukhe ॥ sammukho vartate zUrassa svargAnna nivartate ॥ 25 ॥
He who dies in the war-front without surrendering his weapons attains heaven from which there is no return.

राजा वा राजपुत्रो वा सेनापतिरथापि वा ॥ हतक्षात्रेण यः शूरस्तस्य लोकोऽक्षयो भवेत् ॥ २६ ॥
rAjA vA rAjaputro vA senApatirathApi vA ॥ hatakSAtreNa yaH zUrastasya loko'kSayo bhavet ॥ 26 ॥
The king, or prince or the general who heroically fights and is killed by Kṣatriya attains everlasting regions.

यावंति तस्य रोमाणि भिद्यन्तेऽस्त्रैर्महाहवे ॥ तावतो लभते लोकान्सर्वकामदुघाऽक्षयान् ॥ २७॥
yAvaMti tasya romANi bhidyante'strairmahAhave ॥ tAvato labhate lokAnsarvakAmadughA'kSayAn ॥ 27॥
He attains as many worlds as the number of his hairs split by arrows in the battle. All of these will be wish-yielding and eternal.

वीरासनं वीरशय्या वीरस्थानस्थितिस्स्थिरा ॥ सर्वदा भवति व्यास इह लोके परत्र च ॥ २८ ॥
vIrAsanaM vIrazayyA vIrasthAnasthitissthirA ॥ sarvadA bhavati vyAsa iha loke paratra ca ॥ 28 ॥
O Vyāsa, both here and hereafter he will have heroic seat, heroic bed, heroic status and heroic stability always.

गवार्थे ब्राह्मणार्थे च स्थानस्वाम्यर्थमेव च ॥ ये मृतास्ते सुखं यांति यथा सुकृतिनस्तथा ॥ २९ ॥
gavArthe brAhmaNArthe ca sthAnasvAmyarthameva ca ॥ ye mRtAste sukhaM yAMti yathA sukRtinastathA ॥ 29 ॥
Those who die for the protection of cows, brahmins, status and the master go happily to the other world like virtuous persons.

यः कश्चिद्ब्राह्मणं हत्वा पश्चात्प्राणान्परित्यजेत् ॥ तत्रासौ स्वपतेर्युद्धे स स्वर्गान्न निवर्तते॥ ३०॥
yaH kazcidbrAhmaNaM hatvA pazcAtprANAnparityajet ॥ tatrAsau svapateryuddhe sa svargAnna nivartate॥ 30॥
Even a slayer of a brahmin fighting for his master in a battle and dying there attains heaven which becomes his permanent abode.

क्रव्यादैर्दतिभिश्चैव हतस्य गतिरुत्तमा ॥ द्विजगोस्वामिनामर्थे भवेद्विपुलदाक्षया॥ ३१॥
kravyAdairdatibhizcaiva hatasya gatiruttamA ॥ dvijagosvAminAmarthe bhavedvipuladAkSayA॥ 31॥
The goal realised by the person who dies for the brahmins, cows and his master, being killed by carnivorous beasts or tusked beasts is excellent. It yields him extensive and never-ending benefits.

शक्नोत्विह समर्थश्च यष्टुं क्रतुशतैरपि॥ आत्मदेहपरित्यागः कर्तुं युधि सुदुष्करः ॥ ३२॥
zaknotviha samarthazca yaSTuM kratuzatairapi॥ AtmadehaparityAgaH kartuM yudhi suduSkaraH ॥ 32॥
A man may be competent to perform hundreds of sacrifices, but it is very difficult to renounce his own body in a righteous war.

युद्धं पुण्यतमं स्वर्ग्यं रूपज्ञं सर्वतोमुखम् ॥ सर्वेषामेव वर्णानां क्षत्रियस्य विशेषतः ॥ ३३॥
yuddhaM puNyatamaM svargyaM rUpajJaM sarvatomukham ॥ sarveSAmeva varNAnAM kSatriyasya vizeSataH ॥ 33॥
A righteous war is conducive to the attainment of heaven. It is sanctifying. It makes known the multi-faced beauty of a man. This is the case with the people of all castes, particularly so in the case of a Kṣatriya.

भृशं चैव प्रवक्ष्यामि युद्धधर्मं सनातनम् ॥ यादृशाय प्रहर्तव्यं यादृशं परिवर्जयेत्॥ ३४॥
bhRzaM caiva pravakSyAmi yuddhadharmaM sanAtanam ॥ yAdRzAya prahartavyaM yAdRzaM parivarjayet॥ 34॥
Now I shall explain clearly the eternal virtue concerning war, as to who can be attacked and hit and who shall be spared.

आततायिनमायांतमपि वेदांतगं द्विजम्॥ जिघांसंतं जिघांसेत्तु न तेन ब्रह्महा भवेत्॥ ३५॥
AtatAyinamAyAMtamapi vedAMtagaM dvijam॥ jighAMsaMtaM jighAMsettu na tena brahmahA bhavet॥ 35॥
Even if a brahmin well-versed in Vedānta doctrine were to attack one violently with lethal weapons one can fight him in return. He will not become guilty of brahminicide thereby.

हंतव्योऽपि न हंतव्यः पानीयं यश्च याचते॥ रणे हत्वातुरान्व्यास स नरो ब्रह्महा भवेत् ॥ ३६॥
haMtavyo'pi na haMtavyaH pAnIyaM yazca yAcate॥ raNe hatvAturAnvyAsa sa naro brahmahA bhavet ॥ 36॥
Even a murderer shall not be attacked and killed if he is thirsty and begs for water. O Vyāsa, by killing the sick and the distressed even in battle a man becomes guilty of brahminicide.

व्याधितं दुर्बलं बालं स्त्र्यनाथौ कृपणं ध्रुवम्॥ धनुर्भग्नं छिन्नगुणं हत्वा वै ब्रह्महा भवेत् ॥ ३७॥
vyAdhitaM durbalaM bAlaM stryanAthau kRpaNaM dhruvam॥ dhanurbhagnaM chinnaguNaM hatvA vai brahmahA bhavet ॥ 37॥
One becomes a murderer of a brahmin by killing the sick, the feeble, the child, the hen-pecked, the miserly and one whose bow or bowstring is broken.

एवं विचार्य्य सद्धीमान्भवेत्प्रीत्याः रणप्रियः॥ सजन्मनः फलं प्राप्य परत्रेह प्रमोदते॥ ३८॥
evaM vicAryya saddhImAnbhavetprItyAH raNapriyaH॥ sajanmanaH phalaM prApya paratreha pramodate॥ 38॥
After considering all this, an intelligent man shall strenuously indulge in battles. He will achieve the purpose of his life and rejoice here and hereafter.
