sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ ravicandramasoryAvanmayUkhA bhAsayaMti hi॥ tAvatpramANA pRthivI bhUlokassa tu gIyate ॥ 1॥
Sanatkumāra said:— The extent to which the rays of the sun and the moon shine and illuminate is the size of the earth. It is called Bhūloka.

The orb of the sun is situated at a distance of one lakh yojanas from the earth Thousands of yojanas always in number.

The moon is considered to be the proof of the world The moon stood above the sun for a distance of one lakh yojanas.

grahANAM maNDalaM kRtsnaM zazerupari saMsthitam॥ sanakSatraM sahasrANi dazaiva paritopari ॥ 4॥
The spheres of the planets are entirely situated above the moon along with the stars about ten thousand Yojanas one above the other.

बुधस्तस्मादथो काव्यस्तस्माद्भौमस्य मण्डलम्॥ बृहस्पतिस्तदूर्ध्वं तु तस्योपरि शनैश्चरः॥ ५॥
budhastasmAdatho kAvyastasmAdbhaumasya maNDalam॥ bRhaspatistadUrdhvaM tu tasyopari zanaizcaraH॥ 5॥
Budha (Mercury); above that is Kāvya (Venus): above that is the sphere of Bhauma (Mars). Bṛhaspati (Jupiter) is above that and Śanaiścara (Saturn) is above that.

सप्तर्षिमण्डलं तस्माल्लक्षेणैकेन संस्थितम् ॥ ऋषिभ्य तु सहस्राणां शतादूर्ध्वं ध्रुवः स्थितः ॥ ६॥
saptarSimaNDalaM tasmAllakSeNaikena saMsthitam ॥ RSibhya tu sahasrANAM zatAdUrdhvaM dhruvaH sthitaH ॥ 6॥
The sphere of the seven sages (The Ursa Major) is situated a hundred thousand Yojanas above it. The Pole Star (Dhruva) is situated a hundred thousand Yojanas above the sages.

meDhIbhUtassa yastasya jyotizcakrasya vai dhruvaH॥ bhUrbhuvaHsvariti jJeyaM bhuva UrdhvaM dhruvAdavAk॥ 7॥
The Pole star is the prop of the circle of luminary bodies. The Bhuvarloka and Svarloka are above the earth but beneath the Pole star.

एकयोजनकोटिस्तु यत्र ते कल्पवासिनः॥ ध्रुवादूर्ध्वं महर्लोकस्सप्तैते ब्रह्मणस्सुताः॥ ८॥
ekayojanakoTistu yatra te kalpavAsinaH॥ dhruvAdUrdhvaM maharlokassaptaite brahmaNassutAH॥ 8॥
A crore Yojanas above the Pole star is the Maharloka where the seven sons of Brahmā are stationed. They live even during the time of Kalpa.

The seven sons are—Sanaka, Sananda, Sanātana, Kapila, Āsuri, Voḍhu and Pañcaśikha.

upariSTAttatazzukro dvilakSAbhyaMtare sthitaH॥ dvilakSayojanaM tasmAdadhaH somasutaH smRtaH ॥ 10॥
Above that is stationed Śukra (Venus) at a distance of two hundred thousand Yojanas. Two hundred thousand Yojanas below it is stationed Budha (Mercury) the son of the moon.

O sage, Bhauma (Mars) is stationed two hundred thousand Yojanas above it. Bṛhaspati (Jupiter) is stationed two hundred thousand Yojanas above it.

dvilakSayojanaM jIvAdUrdhvaM saurirvyavasthitaH ॥ ete saptagrahAH proktAssvasvarAzivyavasthitA ॥ 12 ॥
Two hundred thousand Yojanas above Jupiter, Saturn is stationed. These are the seven planets that stay in their respective zodiacs.

rudralakSairyojanatassaptordhvamRSayaH sthitAH ॥ vizvalakSairyojanato dhruvasthitirudAhRtA ॥ 13 ॥
The seven sages (Ursa Major) are stationed eleven hundred thousand Yojanas above the planet Saturn. The Dhruva star is said to be stationed fourteen hundred thousand Yojanas above the great star.

चतुर्गुणोत्तरे चार्द्धे जनलोकात्तपः स्मृतम् ॥ वैराजा यत्र देवा वै स्थिता दाहविवर्जिताः ॥ १४ ॥
caturguNottare cArddhe janalokAttapaH smRtam ॥ vairAjA yatra devA vai sthitA dAhavivarjitAH ॥ 14 ॥
Sixty-three hundred thousand Yojanas from Janaloka is stationed the Tapoloka where the gods called Vairājas stay. They are free from burning sensation.

SaDguNena tapolokAtsatyaloko vyavasthitaH ॥ brahmalokaH sa vijJeyo vasaMtyamalacetasaH ॥ 15॥
The world of truth is established by the sixfold world of austerities. That is to be understood as the Brahmaloka where the pure-minded reside.

सत्यधर्मरताश्चैव ज्ञानिनो ब्रह्मचारिणः॥ यद्गामिनोऽथ भूलोकान्निवसंति हि मानवाः ॥ १६॥
satyadharmaratAzcaiva jJAnino brahmacAriNaH॥ yadgAmino'tha bhUlokAnnivasaMti hi mAnavAH ॥ 16॥
They were devoted to truth and righteousness and were wise and celibates. Then human beings who go to it live on the earth.

भुवर्लोके तु संसिद्धा मुनयो देवरूपिणः ॥ स्वर्गलोके सुरादित्या मरुतो वसवोऽश्विनौ ॥ १७ ॥
bhuvarloke tu saMsiddhA munayo devarUpiNaH ॥ svargaloke surAdityA maruto vasavo'zvinau ॥ 17 ॥
In the world of Bhuvarloka the sages are perfected in the form of gods. In the heavenly world the demigods, the sun, the Maruts, the Vasus and the Aśvinī-kumāras.

विश्वेदेवास्तथा रुद्रास्साध्या नागाः खगादयः ॥ नवग्रहास्ततस्तत्र ऋषयो वीतकल्मषाः ॥ १८॥
vizvedevAstathA rudrAssAdhyA nAgAH khagAdayaH ॥ navagrahAstatastatra RSayo vItakalmaSAH ॥ 18॥
The Visvedevas and the Rudras, the Sadhyas, the Nagas, the Khagas and others. The nine planets were there and the sages were purified of their sins.

एते सप्त महालोकाः कालेय कथितास्तव ॥ पातालानि च सप्तैव ब्रह्माण्डस्य च विस्तरः ॥ १९ ॥
ete sapta mahAlokAH kAleya kathitAstava ॥ pAtAlAni ca saptaiva brahmANDasya ca vistaraH ॥ 19 ॥
O sage, thus the seven worlds have been mentioned to you. The Pātālas too are also seven. Thus the universe has been explained to you.

दधिवृक्षफलं यद्वद्वृत्तिश्चोर्ध्वमधस्तथा ॥ एतदंडकटाहेन सर्वतो वै समावृतम् ॥ २०॥
dadhivRkSaphalaM yadvadvRttizcordhvamadhastathA ॥ etadaMDakaTAhena sarvato vai samAvRtam ॥ 20॥
As the wood-apple is both above and below the earth, so the universe is enveloped by the cauldron of the Cosmic Egg.

दशगुणेन पयसा सर्वतस्तत्समावृतम् ॥ वह्निना वायुना चापि नभसा तमसा तथा ॥ २१॥

It was covered all over with ten times as much milk Fire, wind, sky and darkness.

bhUtAdinApi mahatA digguNottaraveSTitaH ॥ mahAMtaM ca samAvRtya pradhAnaM puruSaH sthitaH ॥ 22॥
He is surrounded by great beings and others in the north of the directions The man stood enveloping the great and the principal.

अनंतस्य न तस्यास्ति संख्यापि परमात्मनः ॥ तेनानंत इति ख्यातः प्रमाणं नास्ति वै यतः ॥ २३॥
anaMtasya na tasyAsti saMkhyApi paramAtmanaH ॥ tenAnaMta iti khyAtaH pramANaM nAsti vai yataH ॥ 23॥
There is no number of Him who is infinite and the Supreme Soul. That is why he is known as Infinite because there is no proof.

हेतुभूतस्समस्तस्य प्रकृतिस्सा परा मुने ॥ अंडानां तु सहस्राणां सहस्राण्ययुतानि च ॥ २४ ॥
hetubhUtassamastasya prakRtissA parA mune ॥ aMDAnAM tu sahasrANAM sahasrANyayutAni ca ॥ 24 ॥
O sage that supreme nature is the cause of all things There were thousands and thousands of eggs.

IdRzAnAM prabhUtAni tasmAdavyaktajanmanaH ॥ dAruNyagnistile tailaM payassu ca yathA ghRtam ॥ 25 ॥
Therefore these are the greatest things of the unmanifest birth. Just as oil is in sesame seeds and butter in milk.

तथासौ परमात्मा वै सर्वं व्याप्यात्मवेदनः ॥ आदिबीजात्प्रसुवते ततस्तेभ्यः परेण्डजाः ॥ २६॥
tathAsau paramAtmA vai sarvaM vyApyAtmavedanaH ॥ AdibIjAtprasuvate tatastebhyaH pareNDajAH ॥ 26॥
Thus that Supreme Soul is the all-pervading Self-pain. From the original seed it gives birth and from them the eggs of others are born.

तेभ्यः पुत्रास्तथान्येषां बीजान्यन्यानि वै ततः ॥ महदादयो विशेषांतास्तद्भवंति सुरादयः॥ २७॥
tebhyaH putrAstathAnyeSAM bIjAnyanyAni vai tataH ॥ mahadAdayo vizeSAMtAstadbhavaMti surAdayaH॥ 27॥
From them sons and other seeds were born The great and others are the special ends of that and the suras and others are.

बीजाद्वृक्षप्ररोहेण यथा नापचयस्तरोः ॥ सूर्य्यकांतमणेः सूर्य्याद्यद्वद्वह्निः प्रजायते ॥ २८॥
bIjAdvRkSapraroheNa yathA nApacayastaroH ॥ sUryyakAMtamaNeH sUryyAdyadvadvahniH prajAyate ॥ 28॥
Just as a tree does not decay by sprouting from seed Fire is produced from the sun-like gem like the sun.

तद्वत्संजायते सृष्टिः शिवस्तत्रः न कामयेत् ॥ शिवशक्तिसमायोगे देवाद्याः प्रभवंति हि ॥ २९॥
tadvatsaMjAyate sRSTiH zivastatraH na kAmayet ॥ zivazaktisamAyoge devAdyAH prabhavaMti hi ॥ 29॥
That is how creation is born and Lord Shiva should not desire it there. When the power of Lord Shiva is combined, the gods and others are produced.

तथा स्वकर्मणैकेन प्ररोहमुपयांति वै ॥ ब्रह्मा विष्णुश्च रुद्राश्च स शिवः परिगीयते ॥ ३०॥
tathA svakarmaNaikena prarohamupayAMti vai ॥ brahmA viSNuzca rudrAzca sa zivaH parigIyate ॥ 30॥
They spring up through their own action. Śiva manifests himself as Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Rudra.

तस्मादुद्धरते सर्वं यस्मिंश्च लयमेष्यति ॥ कर्ता क्रियाणां सर्वासां स शिवः परिगीयते ॥ ३१॥
tasmAduddharate sarvaM yasmiMzca layameSyati ॥ kartA kriyANAM sarvAsAM sa zivaH parigIyate ॥ 31॥
Every thing springs up from him and finally merges in him. Śiva is sung as the performer of all activities.

vyAsa uvAca ॥ sanatkumAra sarvajJa chiMdhi me saMzayaM mahat ॥ santi lokA hi brahmAMDAdupariSTAnna vA mune ॥ 32॥
Vyāsa said:— O sage Sanatkumāra, O omniscient, please clear my doubts. Are there worlds above this universe?

सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ ब्रह्मांडादुपरिष्टाच्च संति लोका मुनीश्वर ॥ ताञ्छृणु त्वं विशेषेण वच्मि तेऽहं समागतः ॥ ३३ ॥
sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ brahmAMDAdupariSTAcca saMti lokA munIzvara ॥ tAJchRNu tvaM vizeSeNa vacmi te'haM samAgataH ॥ 33 ॥
Sanatkumāra said:— O great sage, there are worlds above the universe. Please listen. I shall explain them clearly but briefly.

विधिलोकात्परो लोको वैकुंठ इति विश्रुतः ॥ विराजते महादीप्त्या यत्र विष्णुः प्रतिष्ठितः ॥ ३४ ॥
vidhilokAtparo loko vaikuMTha iti vizrutaH ॥ virAjate mahAdIptyA yatra viSNuH pratiSThitaH ॥ 34 ॥
The world Vaikuṇṭha is beyond the world of Brahmā. It is here that Viṣṇu is stationed and it shines with great brilliance.

तस्योपरिष्टात्कौमारो लोको हि परमाद्भुतः ॥ सेनानीः शंभुतनयो राजते यत्र सुप्रभः ॥ ३५॥
tasyopariSTAtkaumAro loko hi paramAdbhutaH ॥ senAnIH zaMbhutanayo rAjate yatra suprabhaH ॥ 35॥
Above it is the extremely wonderful world Kaumāra. The general Kārttikeya, the brilliant son of Śiva shines here.

ततः परमुमालोको महादिव्यो विरा जते॥ यत्र शक्तिर्विभात्येका त्रिदेवजननी शिवा ॥ ३६॥
tataH paramumAloko mahAdivyo virA jate॥ yatra zaktirvibhAtyekA tridevajananI zivA ॥ 36॥
Beyond that shines the excessively divine world of Umā, where Śakti-Śivā, the mother of the three deities shines.

परात्परा हि प्रकृती रजस्सत्त्वतमोमयी॥ निर्गुणा च स्वयं देवी निर्विकारा शिवात्मिका ॥ ३७॥
parAtparA hi prakRtI rajassattvatamomayI॥ nirguNA ca svayaM devI nirvikArA zivAtmikA ॥ 37॥
She is the Prakṛti, greater than the greatest, with the attributes of Rajas, Sattva and Tamas. But the goddess Śivā herself is devoid of attributes, free from aberrations.

तस्योपरिष्टाद्विज्ञेयश्शिवलोकस्सनातनः ॥ अविनाशी महादिव्यो महाशोभान्वितस्सदा ॥ ३८॥
tasyopariSTAdvijJeyazzivalokassanAtanaH ॥ avinAzI mahAdivyo mahAzobhAnvitassadA ॥ 38॥
Above that is to be understood the eternal world of Lord Shiva He is indestructible greatly divine and always endowed with great beauty.

विराजते परं ब्रह्म यत्र शंभुर्महेश्वरः ॥ त्रिदेवजनकस्वामी सर्वेषां त्रिगुणात्परः ॥ ३९ ॥
virAjate paraM brahma yatra zaMbhurmahezvaraH ॥ tridevajanakasvAmI sarveSAM triguNAtparaH ॥ 39 ॥
The Supreme Brahman resides there where Lord Śambhu resides He is the lord of the three gods and the father of all and is superior to all three.

तत ऊर्ध्वं न लोकाश्च गोलोकस्तत्समीपतः ॥ गोमातरस्सुशीलाख्यास्तत्र संति शिवप्रिया ॥ ४० ॥
tata UrdhvaM na lokAzca golokastatsamIpataH ॥ gomAtarassuzIlAkhyAstatra saMti zivapriyA ॥ 40 ॥
Above that there are no worlds and the world of the universe is nearby There are mothers of cows named Sushila who are dear to Lord Śiva.

तत्पालः कृष्णनामा हि राजते शंकराज्ञया ॥ प्रतिष्ठितश्शिवेनैव शक्त्या स्वच्छन्दचारिणा ॥ ४१॥
tatpAlaH kRSNanAmA hi rAjate zaMkarAjJayA ॥ pratiSThitazzivenaiva zaktyA svacchandacAriNA ॥ 41॥
The protector of that world is Kṛṣṇa. He is established there at the behest of Śiva by Śiva himself who moves about as he pleases due to his power.

शिवलोकोऽद्भुतो व्यास निराधारो मनोहरः ॥ अतिनिर्वचनीयश्च नानावस्तुविराजितः ॥ ४२ ॥
zivaloko'dbhuto vyAsa nirAdhAro manoharaH ॥ atinirvacanIyazca nAnAvastuvirAjitaH ॥ 42 ॥
O Vyāsa, Śiva’s region is wonderful and beautiful. It has no support. It shines with different objects. It cannot be specifically described.

शिवस्तु तदधिष्ठाता सर्वदेवशिरोमणिः ॥ विष्णुब्रह्महरैस्सेव्यः परमात्मा निरञ्जनः॥ ४३॥
zivastu tadadhiSThAtA sarvadevaziromaNiH ॥ viSNubrahmaharaissevyaH paramAtmA niraJjanaH॥ 43॥
The presiding deity of that region is Śiva. He is the crest-jewel of all the gods. He is worthy of being served by Viṣṇu, Brahmā and Śiva. He is the unsullied great soul.
