sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ vakSye'haM bhArataM varSaM himAdrezcaiva dakSiNe ॥ uttare tu samudrasya bhAratI yatra saMsRtiH ॥ 1॥
Sanatkumara said. I shall now describe the country of Bharata and the southern Himalayas The northern part of the ocean is the Bharati where Samsriti is.

O great sage it is nine thousand yojanas in breadth This is the land of action for heaven and liberation by the wise.

yatassaMprApyate puMbhissvargo naraka eva ca ॥ bhAratasyApi varSasya nava bhedAnbravImi te ॥ 3 ॥
Heaven and hell are attained by men from here only. I shall mention nine subdivisions of the Bhārata Varṣa to you.

iMdradyumnaH kaseruzca tAmravarNo gabhastimAn ॥ nAgadvIpastathA saumyo gandharvastvatha vAruNaH ॥ 4 ॥
Indradyumna and Kaseru were copper-coloured and radiant. The island of Nagadvipa is also known as Soumya Gandharva and Varuna.

ayaM tu navamasteSAM dvIpassAgarasaMbhRtaH ॥ yojanAnAM sahasraM tu dvIpo'yaM dakSiNottaraH ॥ 5 ॥
This is the ninth of these islands surrounded by the ocean This island is a thousand yojanas in the north-south.

pUrve kirAtA yasya syurdakSiNe yavanAH sthitAH ॥ pazcime ca tathA jJeyA uttare hi tapasvinaH ॥ 6 ॥
To the east of Bhārata live the Kirātas, to the south the Yavanas; to the west Khaśas and to the north the ascetics.

brAhmaNAH kSatriyA vaizyA madhye zUdrAzca bhUyazaH॥ ijyA yuddhapaNA sevA vartayanto vyavasthitAH ॥ 7॥
In the middle live the Brahmins, Kṣatriyas, Vaiśyas and Śūdras maintaining themselves by sacrifices, battles, merchandise and service.

There are seven Kulaparvatas viz Mahendra, Malaya, Sahya, Sudām, Ṛkṣaparvata, Vindhy and Pāriyātra.

vedasmRtipurANAdyAH pAriyAtrodbhavA mune॥ sarvapApaharA jJeyA darzanAtsparzanAdapi॥ 9॥
O sage, Vedas, Smṛtis, Purāṇas and other things issue from Pāriyātra. They dispel all sins, it should be known, by their very sight or touch.

narmadA surasAdyAzca saptAnyAzca sahasrazaH॥ viMdhyodbhavA mahAnadyassarvapApaharAzzubhAH॥ 10॥
The great rivers issuing from Vindhya are seven, such as Narmadā, Surasā etc, and thousands of smaller ones are all auspicious. They quell all sins.

Godāvarī, Bhīmarathī, Tāpī, and other important rivers issue from the mountain Ṛkṣa. They dispel fear of sins immediately.

The rivers Kṛṣṇā Veṇī and others issue from Sahya Kṛtamālā, Tāmraparṇī and others issue from Malaya.

Triyāmā, Ṛṣikulyā and others issue from Mahendra. Ṛṣikulyā, Kumārī and others issue from Śuktimat.

नानाजनपदास्तेषु मंडलेषु वसन्ति वै ॥ आसां पिबंति पानीयं सरत्सु विविधेषु च॥ १४॥
nAnAjanapadAsteSu maMDaleSu vasanti vai ॥ AsAM pibaMti pAnIyaM saratsu vividheSu ca॥ 14॥
Many territories, countries are situated in their basins. People drink from these rivers as well as from other lakes.

catvAri bhArate varSe yugAnyAsanmahAmune ॥ kRtAdIni na cAnyeSu dvIpeSu prabhavaMti hi॥ 15॥
O great sage, all the four Yugās Kṛta and others are followed in Bhārata and not in the other Dvīpas.

dAnAni cAtra dIyaMte sukRtaizcAtra yAjJikaiH ॥ tapastapaMti yatayaH paralokArthamAdarAt ॥ 16॥
Charitable gifts are offered here by meritorious sacrifices. Ascetics perform penances strenuously for the attainment of better worlds.

यतो हि कर्मभूरेषा जम्बूद्वीपे महामुने ॥ अत्रापि भारतं श्रेष्ठमतोऽन्या भोगभूमयः ॥ १७॥
yato hi karmabhUreSA jambUdvIpe mahAmune ॥ atrApi bhArataM zreSThamato'nyA bhogabhUmayaH ॥ 17॥
O great sage, it is so because this is the land of sacred rites in the Jambūdvīpa. Here too Bhārata is the most excellent. The others are lands of pleasure.

kadAcillabhate martyassahasrairmunisattama ॥ atra janmasahasrANAM mAnuSyaM puNyasaMcayaiH ॥ 18॥
O excellent sage, after a thousand births rarely docs a man get birth as a human being here and that too due to hoarded merits.

स्वर्गापवर्गास्पदमार्गभूते धन्यास्तु ते भारतभूमिभागे ॥ गायंति देवाः किल गीतकानि भवंति भूयः पुरुषास्सुरास्ते॥ १९॥
svargApavargAspadamArgabhUte dhanyAstu te bhAratabhUmibhAge ॥ gAyaMti devAH kila gItakAni bhavaMti bhUyaH puruSAssurAste॥ 19॥
It is said that the gods sing songs like this:—It is only the blessed who are able to live in the land of Bhārata which is the pathway leading to heaven and salvation. They are born as men there.

अवाप्य मानुष्यमयं कदाचिद्विहृत्य शंभोः परमात्मरूपे ॥ फलानि सर्वाणि तु कर्मजानि यास्याम्यहं तत्तनुतां हि तस्य॥ २०॥
avApya mAnuSyamayaM kadAcidvihRtya zaMbhoH paramAtmarUpe ॥ phalAni sarvANi tu karmajAni yAsyAmyahaM tattanutAM hi tasya॥ 20॥
After getting human birth once in a way, and sporting about in the great soul form of Śiva I shall attain the fruits of all sacred rites in that form.

आप्स्यंति धन्याः खलु ते मनुष्याः सुखैर्युताः कर्मणि सन्निविष्टाः ॥ जनुर्हि येषां खलु भारतेऽस्ति ते स्वर्गमोक्षोभयलाभवन्तः॥ २१॥
ApsyaMti dhanyAH khalu te manuSyAH sukhairyutAH karmaNi sanniviSTAH ॥ janurhi yeSAM khalu bhArate'sti te svargamokSobhayalAbhavantaH॥ 21॥
Only blessed human beings derive this pleasure. They are happy and their minds are interested in sacred rites. Those who take birth in Bhārata have the two gains of attaining heaven and salvation.

लक्षयोजनविस्तारस्समस्तपरिमण्डलः ॥ जम्बूद्वीपो मया ख्यातः क्षारोदधिसुसंवृतः ॥ २२॥
lakSayojanavistArassamastaparimaNDalaH ॥ jambUdvIpo mayA khyAtaH kSArodadhisusaMvRtaH ॥ 22॥
This Jambūdvīpa extends to a hundred thousand Yojanas including all its internal zones. It is well surrounded by the salt ocean.

संवेष्ट्य क्षारमुदधिं शतसाहस्रसम्मितम् ॥ ततो हि द्विगुणो ब्रह्मन्प्लक्षद्वीपः प्रकीर्तितः ॥ २३॥
saMveSTya kSAramudadhiM zatasAhasrasammitam ॥ tato hi dviguNo brahmanplakSadvIpaH prakIrtitaH ॥ 23॥
The continent of Plakṣa is glorified as surrounding the briny sea extending to a hundred thousand Yojanas. O brahmin the Dvīpa is twice that in extent.

gomaMtazcaiva candrazca nArado dardurastathA ॥ somakassumanAzzailo vaibhrAjazcaiva sattamaH ॥ 24॥
The seven Varṣa mountains are Gomanta, Candra, Nārada, Dardura, Somaka, Sumanas and Vaibhrāja.

वर्षाचलेषु रम्येषु सहितास्सततं प्रजाः ॥ वसंति देवगंधर्वा वर्षेष्वेतेषु नित्यशः ॥ २५॥
varSAcaleSu ramyeSu sahitAssatataM prajAH ॥ vasaMti devagaMdharvA varSeSveteSu nityazaH ॥ 25॥
On these beautiful Varṣa mountains, all the subjects, gods, Gandharvas etc. live together for ever.

नाधयो व्याधयो वापि जनानां तत्र कुत्रचित् ॥ दश वर्षसहस्राणि तत्र जीवंति मानवाः ॥ २६ ॥
nAdhayo vyAdhayo vApi janAnAM tatra kutracit ॥ daza varSasahasrANi tatra jIvaMti mAnavAH ॥ 26 ॥
There the life expectation for men is ten thousand years. Neither physical sickness nor worries nor agonies torment the people anywhere there.

anutaptA zikhI caiva pApaghnI tridivA kRpA ॥ amRtA sukRtA caiva saptaivAtra ca nimnagAH ॥ 27 ॥
The seven holy rivers here are Anutaptā, Śikhī, Pāpaghnī, Tridivā, Kṛpā, Amṛtā and Sukṛtā.

kSudranadyastathA zailAstatra saMti sahasrazaH ॥ tAH pibaMti susaMhRSTA nadIrjanapadAstu te ॥ 28 ॥
Insignificant rivers and mountains are there in thousands. The people in the countries are delighted in drinking the waters of these rivers.

न तत्रापि युगावस्था यथास्थानेषु सप्तसु ॥ त्रेतायुगसमः कालस्सर्वदैव महामुने ॥ २९॥
na tatrApi yugAvasthA yathAsthAneSu saptasu ॥ tretAyugasamaH kAlassarvadaiva mahAmune ॥ 29॥
In all the seven subdivisions in it there is no differentiation among the various Yugas. O great sage, the time there is on a par with Tretā Yuga for ever.

विप्रक्षत्रियवैश्यास्ते शूद्राश्च मुनिसत्तम ॥ कल्पवृक्षसमानस्तु तन्मध्ये सुमहातरुः ॥ ३० ॥
viprakSatriyavaizyAste zUdrAzca munisattama ॥ kalpavRkSasamAnastu tanmadhye sumahAtaruH ॥ 30 ॥
O excellent sage, there are brahmins, Kṣatriyas, Vaiśyas and Śūdras there. In its middle there is a big tree like the celestial Kalpa tree.

प्लक्षस्तन्नामसंज्ञो वै प्लक्षद्वीपो द्विजोत्तम ॥ इज्यते तत्र भगवाञ्छंकरो लोकशंकरः ॥ ३१॥
plakSastannAmasaMjJo vai plakSadvIpo dvijottama ॥ ijyate tatra bhagavAJchaMkaro lokazaMkaraH ॥ 31॥
That tree is called Plakṣa and hence, O excellent brahmin, the continent is called Plakṣadvīpa. Lord Śiva, the benefactor of the worlds, performs a sacrifice there.

हरिश्च भगवान्ब्रह्मा यन्त्रैर्मन्त्रैश्च वैदिकैः॥ संक्षेपेण तथा भूयश्शाल्मलिं त्वं निशामय ॥ ३२ ॥
harizca bhagavAnbrahmA yantrairmantraizca vaidikaiH॥ saMkSepeNa tathA bhUyazzAlmaliM tvaM nizAmaya ॥ 32 ॥
Lord Viṣṇu and Brahmā too perform worships here with Vedic mantras and Tantras. Now listen again to the description of Śālmali in brief.

saptavarSANi tatraiva teSAM nAmAni me zRNu ॥ zveto'tha haritazcaiva jImUto rohitastathA ॥ 33 ॥
Hear from me the names of those who lived there for seven years The white and green clouds and the red clouds.

vaikalo mAnasazcaiva suprabhassaptamo mune ॥ zAlmalena tu vRkSeNa dvIpaH zAlmalisaMjJakaH ॥ 34 ॥
O sage the seventh was Vaikala and Manasa and Suprabha The island is called Shalmali because of the salt tree.

dviguNena samudreNa satataM saMvRtaH sthitaH ॥ varSAbhivyaMjakA nadyastAsAM nAmAni me zRNu ॥ 35 ॥
It is constantly surrounded by twice as much sea Listen to me the names of the rivers that express rain.

शुक्ला रक्ता हिरण्या च चन्द्रा शुभ्रा विमोचना ॥ निवृत्तिः सप्तमी तासां पुण्यतोया सुशीतलाः ॥ ३६ ॥
zuklA raktA hiraNyA ca candrA zubhrA vimocanA ॥ nivRttiH saptamI tAsAM puNyatoyA suzItalAH ॥ 36 ॥
The white and red deer and the moon are white and release. The seventh day of renunciation is the holy waters of these rivers which are very cool.

saptaiva tAni varSANi caturvarNAyutAni ca ॥ bhagavantaM sadA zaMbhuM yajaMte vividhairmakhaiH ॥ 37 ॥
All the seven Varṣas contain people of the four castes. They worship lord Śiva always with various kinds of sacrifices.

devAnAM tatra sAnnidhyamatIva sumanorame ॥ eSa dvIpassamudreNa surodena samAvRtaH ॥ 38 ॥
In this beautiful place the gods are always present. This Dvīpa is surrounded by the ocean of wine.

The island of Kusha is situated outside on all sides by twice as much The giants and demons live there along with humans.

Similarly the devas gandharvas yakshas kimpurushas and others There are four varnas devoted to their own rituals.
