sanatkumAra uvAca॥ teSAM mUrddhopariSTAdvai narakAMstAJchRNuSva ca॥ matto munivarazreSTha pacyaMte yatra pApinaH ॥ 1॥
Sanatkumāra said:— O excellent sage, above the nether regions, are the hells where the sinners are scorched. Listen to their description from me.

They are—Raurava, Śūkara, Rādha, Tāla, Vivasvat, Mahājvāla, Taptakumbha, Lavaṇa, Vilohita.

vaitaraNI pUyavahA kRmiNaH kRmibhojanaH ॥ asipatravanaM ghoraM lAlAbhakSazca dAruNaH ॥ 3 ॥
The river Vaitaraṇī consists of putrid stuff flowing in it, Kṛmiṇa. Kṛmibhojana, Asipatravana and Lālābhakṣa are the terrible hells.

तथा पूयवहः प्रायो बहिर्ज्वालो ह्यधश्शिराः ॥ संदंशः कालसूत्रश्च तमश्चावीचिरो धनः ॥ ४ ॥
tathA pUyavahaH prAyo bahirjvAlo hyadhazzirAH ॥ saMdaMzaH kAlasUtrazca tamazcAvIciro dhanaH ॥ 4 ॥
Pūyavaha has usually flames of fire outside and is topsyturvy. Sandaṃśa, Kālasūtra, Tamas, Avīcirodhana.

zvabhojano'tha ruSTazca mahArauravazAlmalI ॥ ityAdyA bahavastatra narakA duHkhadAyakAH ॥ 5 ॥
Śvabhojana, Ruṣṭa, Mahāraurava and Śālmali—these and other bells are there; all of these are very grievous.

pacyaMte teSu puruSAH pApakarmaratAstu ye ॥ kramAdvakSye tu tAn vyAsa sAvadhAnatayA zRNu ॥ 6 ॥
Men who are indulgent in sins are scorched there. O Vyāsa, I shall mention them in order. Listen attentively.

kUTasAkSyaM tu yo vakti vinA viprAn surAMzca gAH ॥ sadA'nRtaM vadedyastu sa naro yAti rauravam॥ 7 ॥
He who commits perjury except for the brahmins, gods and cows and he who utters a lie always goes to Raurava.

भ्रूणहा स्वर्णहर्ता च गोरोधी विश्वघातकः ॥ सुरापो ब्रह्महंता च परद्रव्यापहारकः ॥ ८ ॥
bhrUNahA svarNahartA ca gorodhI vizvaghAtakaH ॥ surApo brahmahaMtA ca paradravyApahArakaH ॥ 8 ॥
He kills embryos and steals gold and kills cows and kills the universe He is a drunkard and a brahmachari and a thief of others' property.

यस्तत्संगी स वै याति मृतो व्यास गुरोर्वधात् ॥ ततः कुंभे स्वसुर्मातुर्गोश्चैव दुहितुस्तथा ॥ ९ ॥
yastatsaMgI sa vai yAti mRto vyAsa gurorvadhAt ॥ tataH kuMbhe svasurmAturgozcaiva duhitustathA ॥ 9 ॥
O Vyasa he who is associated with that goes dead by the killing of his spiritual master Then in a pot the cow of her mother-in-law and her daughter.

साध्व्या विक्रयकृच्चाथ वार्द्धकी केशविक्रयी ॥ तप्तलोहेषु पच्यंते यश्च भक्तं परित्यजेत् ॥ १० ॥
sAdhvyA vikrayakRccAtha vArddhakI kezavikrayI ॥ taptaloheSu pacyaMte yazca bhaktaM parityajet ॥ 10 ॥
The saintly woman was a saleswoman and the grown woman was a hairdresser. They are cooked in hot iron and he who abandons his devotee.

अवमंता गुरूणां यः पश्चाद्भोक्ता नराधमः ॥ देवदूषयिता चैव देवविक्रयिकश्च यः ॥ ११ ॥
avamaMtA gurUNAM yaH pazcAdbhoktA narAdhamaH ॥ devadUSayitA caiva devavikrayikazca yaH ॥ 11 ॥
He who despises his teachers and later enjoys them is the lowest of men He who defiles the gods and sells the gods.

agamyagAmI yazcAMte yAti saptabalaM dvija ॥ cauro goghno hi patito maryAdAdUSakastathA ॥ 12 ॥
O brāhmaṇa he who goes incomprehensible and goes to the end of the seven forces A thief who kills a cow has fallen down and a violator of dignity.

देवद्विजपितृद्वेष्टा रत्नदूषयिता च यः ॥ स याति कृमिभक्षं वै कृमीनत्ति दुरिष्टकृत् ॥ १३॥
devadvijapitRdveSTA ratnadUSayitA ca yaH ॥ sa yAti kRmibhakSaM vai kRmInatti duriSTakRt ॥ 13॥
He who hates gods brāhmaṇas and ancestors and who spoils gems He goes to the worm-eater and eats the worm, which is evil.

पितृदेवसुरान् यस्तु पर्यश्नाति नराधमः॥ लालाभक्षं स यात्यज्ञो यश्शस्त्रकूटकृन्नरः ॥ १४॥
pitRdevasurAn yastu paryaznAti narAdhamaH॥ lAlAbhakSaM sa yAtyajJo yazzastrakUTakRnnaraH ॥ 14॥
He who devours the ancestors gods and demons is the lowest of men The ignorant man who makes a pile of weapons goes to the red-eater.

यश्चांत्यजेन संसेव्यो ह्यसद्ग्राही तु यो द्विजः ॥ अयाज्ययाजकश्चैव तथैवाभक्ष्य भक्षकः॥ १५ ॥
yazcAMtyajena saMsevyo hyasadgrAhI tu yo dvijaH ॥ ayAjyayAjakazcaiva tathaivAbhakSya bhakSakaH॥ 15 ॥
And he who is to be served by the renunciant is a brahmin who is not a recipient of evil. He who does not sacrifice and who does not sacrifice is also a devourer who does not eat.

रुधिरौघे पतंत्येते सोमविक्रयिणश्च ये॥ मधुहा ग्रामहा याति क्रूरां वैतरणीं नदीम् ॥ १६ ॥
rudhiraughe pataMtyete somavikrayiNazca ye॥ madhuhA grAmahA yAti krUrAM vaitaraNIM nadIm ॥ 16 ॥
These and those who sell moon fall into a stream of blood The killer of honey and the killer of a village goes to the cruel river Vaitarani.

नवयौवनमत्ताश्च मर्यादाभेदिनश्च ये ॥ ते कृत्यं यांत्यशौचाश्च कुलकाजीविनश्च ये ॥ १७ ॥
navayauvanamattAzca maryAdAbhedinazca ye ॥ te kRtyaM yAMtyazaucAzca kulakAjIvinazca ye ॥ 17 ॥
Those who are arrogant in the freshness of youth, who transgress the bounds of decency, who are unclean and who maintain themselves on the earnings of unchaste women go to Kṛmya hell.

असिपत्रवनं याति वृक्षच्छेदी वृथैव यः॥ क्षुरभ्रका मृगव्याधा वह्निज्वाले पतंति ते ॥ १८ ॥
asipatravanaM yAti vRkSacchedI vRthaiva yaH॥ kSurabhrakA mRgavyAdhA vahnijvAle pataMti te ॥ 18 ॥
He who cues off trees without purpose goes to Asipatravana hell. Those who hunt deer with Kṣuraprakas (arrows with horse-shoe-shaped heads) fall into Vahnijvāla hell.

भ्रष्टाचारो हि यो विप्रः क्षत्रियो वैश्य एव च ॥ यात्यंते द्विज तत्रैव यः श्वपाकेषु वह्निदः ॥ १९ ॥
bhraSTAcAro hi yo vipraH kSatriyo vaizya eva ca ॥ yAtyaMte dvija tatraiva yaH zvapAkeSu vahnidaH ॥ 19 ॥
O brahmin, the brahmin, the Kṣatriya or the Vaiśya who swerves from the path of good conduct ultimately fall into the hell prescribed for dog-cooking cāṇḍālas.

व्रतस्य लोपका ये च स्वाश्रमाद्विच्युताश्च ये॥ संदंशयातनामध्ये पतंति भृशदारुणे॥ २०॥
vratasya lopakA ye ca svAzramAdvicyutAzca ye॥ saMdaMzayAtanAmadhye pataMti bhRzadAruNe॥ 20॥
Those who drop sacred rites in the middle and those who are fallen off from their duties in accordance with the stages of their life fall into the hell Sandaṃśa where the tortures are very terrible.

वीर्यं स्वप्नेषु स्कंदेयुर्ये नरा ब्रह्मचारिणः॥ पुत्रा नाध्यापिता यैश्च ते पतंति श्वभोजने ॥ २१ ॥
vIryaM svapneSu skaMdeyurye narA brahmacAriNaH॥ putrA nAdhyApitA yaizca te pataMti zvabhojane ॥ 21 ॥
The students who are guilty of nocturnal emission of their semen and the fathers who do not properly educate their sons fall into the Śvabhojana hell.

एते चान्ये च नरकाः शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥ येषु दुष्कृतकर्माणः पच्यते यातनागताः ॥ २२ ॥
ete cAnye ca narakAH zatazo'tha sahasrazaH ॥ yeSu duSkRtakarmANaH pacyate yAtanAgatAH ॥ 22 ॥
There are hundreds and thousands of these and other hells where thousands of sinners undergo tortures and are scorched.

तथैव पापान्येतानि तथान्यानि सहस्रशः ॥ भुज्यंते यानि पुरुषैर्नरकांतरगोचरैः ॥ २३॥
tathaiva pApAnyetAni tathAnyAni sahasrazaH ॥ bhujyaMte yAni puruSairnarakAMtaragocaraiH ॥ 23॥
These sins and others are thousands in number similarly, which the beings in the hells experience and try to wipe off.

वर्णाश्रमविरुद्धं च कर्म कुर्वंति ये नराः॥ कर्मणा मनसा वाचा निरये तु पतंति ते॥ २४॥
varNAzramaviruddhaM ca karma kurvaMti ye narAH॥ karmaNA manasA vAcA niraye tu pataMti te॥ 24॥
Those who perpetrate misdeeds contrary to the injunctions of caste and stages of life whether physically, mentally or verbally fall into hell.

अधश्शिरोभिर्दृश्यंते नारका दिवि दैवतैः॥ देवानधोमुखान्सर्वानधः पश्यंति नारकाः ॥ २५॥
adhazzirobhirdRzyaMte nArakA divi daivataiH॥ devAnadhomukhAnsarvAnadhaH pazyaMti nArakAH ॥ 25॥
The beings in the hells are seen standing upside down by the gods in the heaven. These beings see the gods also similarly with heads down, beneath them.

स्थावराः कृमिपाकाश्च पक्षिणः पशवो मृगाः ॥ धार्मिकास्त्रिदशास्तद्वन्मोक्षिणश्च यथाक्रमम्॥ २६॥
sthAvarAH kRmipAkAzca pakSiNaH pazavo mRgAH ॥ dhArmikAstridazAstadvanmokSiNazca yathAkramam॥ 26॥
They are animals that eat worms birds animals and deer The righteous devatas and the liberated ones in order.

यावंतो जंतवस्स्वर्गे तावंतो नरकौकसः ॥ पापकृद्याति नरकं प्रायश्चित्तपराङ्मुखः ॥ २७॥
yAvaMto jaMtavassvarge tAvaMto narakaukasaH ॥ pApakRdyAti narakaM prAyazcittaparAGmukhaH ॥ 27॥
There are as many living beings in heaven as there are inhabitants of hell A sinner who turns away from atonement will go to hell.

गुरूणि गुरुभिश्चैव लघूनि लघुभिस्तथा ॥ प्रायश्चित्तानि कालेय मनुस्स्वायम्भुवोऽब्रवीत्॥ २८॥
gurUNi gurubhizcaiva laghUni laghubhistathA ॥ prAyazcittAni kAleya manussvAyambhuvo'bravIt॥ 28॥
Svāyambhuva Manu has ordained expiatory rites for great sins and small expiatory rites for small sins in the Kali age.

यानि तेषामशेषाणां कर्मार्ण्युक्तानि तेषु वै॥ प्रायश्चित्तमशेषेण हरानुस्मरणं परम् ॥ २९॥
yAni teSAmazeSANAM karmArNyuktAni teSu vai॥ prAyazcittamazeSeNa harAnusmaraNaM param ॥ 29॥
Of the many rites mentioned by way of expiation the remembrance of Śiva is the greatest.

प्रायश्चित्तं तु यस्यैव पापं पुंसः प्रजायते॥ कृते पापेऽनुतापोऽपि शिवसंस्मरणं परम्॥ ३०॥
prAyazcittaM tu yasyaiva pApaM puMsaH prajAyate॥ kRte pApe'nutApo'pi zivasaMsmaraNaM param॥ 30॥
If a person commits a sin but repents after committing it, it is also an expiation. There also the remembrance of Śiva is the greatest expiation.

माहेश्वरमवाप्नोति मध्याह्नादिषु संस्मरन्॥ प्रातर्निशि च संध्यायां क्षीणपापो भवेन्नरः॥ ३१॥
mAhezvaramavApnoti madhyAhnAdiSu saMsmaran॥ prAtarnizi ca saMdhyAyAM kSINapApo bhavennaraH॥ 31॥
A man remembering lord Śiva in the midday or other occasions attains lord Śiva. By remembering the lord in the morning, night or dusk, he gets his sins eliminated.

मुक्तिं प्रयाति स्वर्गं वा समस्तक्लेशसंक्षयम॥ शिवस्य स्मरणादेव तस्य शंभोरुमापतेः ॥ ३२ ॥
muktiM prayAti svargaM vA samastaklezasaMkSayama॥ zivasya smaraNAdeva tasya zaMbhorumApateH ॥ 32 ॥
It is only by remembering Śiva, the lord of Umā that a man attains salvation, the annihilation of all pains or heaven.

पापन्तरायो विप्रेन्द्र जपहोमार्चनादि च ॥ भवत्येव न कुत्रापि त्रैलोक्ये मुनिसत्तम ॥ ३३ ॥
pApantarAyo viprendra japahomArcanAdi ca ॥ bhavatyeva na kutrApi trailokye munisattama ॥ 33 ॥
O leading brahmin, Japas, Homas, worship etc. are obstacles in the path of sins. O excellent sage, they do not occur anywhere in the three worlds.

महेश्वरे मतिर्यस्य जपहोमार्चनादिपु ॥ यत्पुण्यं तत्कृतं तेन देवेन्द्रत्वादिकं फलम् ॥ ३४॥
mahezvare matiryasya japahomArcanAdipu ॥ yatpuNyaM tatkRtaM tena devendratvAdikaM phalam ॥ 34॥
The attainment of the status of Indra, lord of the gods, is the fruit of the merit attained in Japa, Homa, worship etc. performed by the man whose mind is in lord Siva.

पुमान्न नरकं याति यः स्मरन्भक्तितो मुने ॥ अहर्निशं शिवं तस्मात्स क्षीणाशेषपातकः ॥ ३५ ॥
pumAnna narakaM yAti yaH smaranbhaktito mune ॥ aharnizaM zivaM tasmAtsa kSINAzeSapAtakaH ॥ 35 ॥
O sage, he who devoutly remembers Śiva day and night never goes to hell since his sins are eliminated without any vestige.

नरकस्वर्गसंज्ञाये पापपुण्ये द्विजोत्तम ॥ ययोस्त्वेकं तु दुःखायान्यत्सुखायोद्भवाय च ॥ ३६॥
narakasvargasaMjJAye pApapuNye dvijottama ॥ yayostvekaM tu duHkhAyAnyatsukhAyodbhavAya ca ॥ 36॥
O excellent brahmin, sin and merit indicate hell and heaven. One is conducive to misery and the other to pleasure and rebirth.

तदेव प्रीतये भूत्वा पुनर्दुःखाय जायते ॥ तत्स्याद्दुःखात्मकं नास्ति न च किंचित्सुखात्मकम् ॥ ३७॥
tadeva prItaye bhUtvA punarduHkhAya jAyate ॥ tatsyAdduHkhAtmakaM nAsti na ca kiMcitsukhAtmakam ॥ 37॥
That at the outset is conducive to happiness but later brings in misery. Hence ultimately everything is of the nature of misery. There is nothing in fact of an invariably pleasurable nature.

मनसः परिणामोऽयं सुखदुःखोपलक्षणः ॥ ज्ञानमेव परं ब्रह्म ज्ञानं तत्त्वाय कल्पते ॥ ३८ ॥
manasaH pariNAmo'yaM sukhaduHkhopalakSaNaH ॥ jJAnameva paraM brahma jJAnaM tattvAya kalpate ॥ 38 ॥
Happiness and misery constitute only a temporary transformation of the mind. But knowledge is the greatest Brahman. Knowledge is conducive to the understanding of reality.

ज्ञानात्मकमिदं विश्वं सकलं सचराचरम् ॥ परविज्ञानतः किंचिद्विद्यते न परं मुने ॥ ३९ ॥
jJAnAtmakamidaM vizvaM sakalaM sacarAcaram ॥ paravijJAnataH kiMcidvidyate na paraM mune ॥ 39 ॥
The entire universe consisting of the mobile and immobile beings has knowledge as its soul. O sage, there is nothing greater than the perfect knowledge of the greatest being.

एवमेतन्मयाख्यातं सर्वं नरकमण्डलम् ॥ अत ऊर्ध्वं प्रवक्ष्यामि सांप्रतं मंडलं भुवः ॥ ४०॥
evametanmayAkhyAtaM sarvaM narakamaNDalam ॥ ata UrdhvaM pravakSyAmi sAMprataM maMDalaM bhuvaH ॥ 40॥
Thus the entire sphere of the hell has been explained by me. Hereafter I shall explain the sphere of the earth.
